Basic Firefighting The Atlantic Police Academy’s Basic Firefighting Program will train you to the levels of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001, as per Firefighter Professional Qualifications. Conservation Enforcement The Conservation Enforcement program is specifically designed to provide training to wildlife and forestry technicians. You will acquire the skills and knowledge you need for a career in conservation enforcement. This program has a mandatory residence requirement. Start: August Length: 16 weeks Location: Atlantic Police Academy Credential Issued: Certificate, Conservation Enforcement Officer Admission Requirements • Grade 12 or equivalent with credits at or above the general level • Minimum one year post-secondary education • Pleasure craft operator’s certificate • Must be 19 years of age or older by program start date • Must pass a Psychological Profiling Test (This is mandatory testing at an additional cost of $380. The applicant is responsible for this cost. Testing for applicants from the Maritimes is held in P.E.I.) • Completed medical and immunization forms • A Criminal Records Check (Vulnerable Persons) with no findings of guilt • Proof of Canadian citizenship or Landed Immigrant Status • Valid unrestricted driver’s license • Three completed reference forms • Certification in swimming - Aqua Quest 6 or equivalent • Certification in Standard First Aid and CPR Level C • Resumé
Correctional Officer

Train for a rewarding career as a correctional officer for Canadian institutions. The intensive program includes training in the duties and role of a correctional officer in the Canadian justice system; communications techniques; how to work as a valuable member of a team; the principles of human relations, sociology and psychology; and the appropriate use of control tactics, firearms and other control devices. On the job training is an integral component of the Correctional Officer program. Students are placed in federal and provincial correctional facilities in the Atlantic region and across Canada to apply their newly-acquired knowledge and skills. This is a mandatory residential program. Police Science (Cadet) The Police Science (Cadet) program blends knowledge with hands-on training using real life situations and various simulations to prepare you for the law enforcement profession. This program offers you the opportunity to explore careers, to enhance and build on essential skills, and to prepare yourself for further postsecondary pursuits. If you are unsure about your career interests, need specific experiences to make sure that your career choice is right for you, don’t have the necessary qualifications or require higher mark in core subjects for acceptance into a program, or would benefit from a preparatory year for building skills and experiences and participating in a college environment, this is the program for you. Degree Pathways: A great blend of college and university Degree pathways such as articulation agreements and transfer credits give you the opportunity to begin your studies at one institution and finish at another. Holland College has more than 150 agreements with universities and other post-secondary institutions across Canada, in the U.S. and overseas. There are a variety of joint applied degree programs and 2+2 programs that enable you to earn a university degree in as little as two years after you have your Holland College diploma, along with other agreements that can lead to certifications.
Accreditation Accredited programs are recognized across Canada as having met national academic standards. If you are planning to work elsewhere in Canada, a diploma from a nationally accredited program will ensure that you receive full credit for your training regardless of where you settle.
Prince of Wales Campus (PWC) Located in downtown Charlottetown, the Prince of Wales Campus is home to most of the college’s programs. The campus includes the Charlottetown Centre, the School of Performing Arts, the Centre for Community Engagement, and the new $17 million Centre for Applied Science and Technology. The college’s residence, Glendenning Hall, is also located on the Prince of Wales Campus.
On The Job Training On the job training and internships give you the opportunity to experience real day to day operations in your area of study. You get to use the skills and knowledge that you’ve acquired, and to interact with staff members on the work site. Students must complete their OJT or internship requirements in order to graduate.
Atlantic Police Academy (APA) Located at Slemon Park, the APA trains dedicated people who want to enter the field of law enforcement for the first time, and offers advanced training to those already experienced in law enforcement. The academy also offers training in the areas of corrections, firefighting, and industrial security.

Residence Information Students in the Correctional Officer, Conservation Enforcement, and Police Science (Cadet) programs are required to stay in barracks, which are located in Slemon Park. The residence provides experiential learning that would not be possible if students interacted with one another in an instructional setting alone. Residence life allows students to develop skills in teamwork, problem solving, time management and communications. Additionally, residence life allows or the development of attitudes such as gender and cross-cultural sensitivity, attitudes that are essential to a successful career in the policing community. The residence features private rooms, each with its own bathroom, air conditioning, and wiring for cable TV, telephone and Internet. For students in other Atlantic Police Academy programs, Holland College’s Student Services Department provides information to help students find suitable accommodations in the local community. The Summerside Area Accommodations List includes houses, rooms with kitchen privileges, homes offering room and board, and listings for individuals seeking roommates.
