Bloorview Kids Foundation exists to raise funds for Bloorview Kids Rehab. For over a century, Bloorview has been dedicated to enhancing the lives of children with disabilities and their families. It has grown to be the largest and most comprehensive children’s rehabilitation teaching hospital in Canada, and a global leader in the field of childhood disability. When you entrust Bloorview Kids Foundation with a donation, we commit to ensuring your investment achieves its objective by having a high

It has been a remarkably difficult year, characterized by the worst economic and financial market collapse since the Great Depression. The sharp decline in equity values adversely affected endowment levels and philanthropic giving throughout North America. Bloorview Kids Foundation met the challenges of the year by growing our donor base, maintaining the integrity of our endowment funds, and meeting 100% of our grant commitment to Bloorview Kids Rehab. We have three retiring Board members this year: Ron Jones, Deborah Alexander and Ron Kimel. We thank each of them for their time, support
and guidance. We welcome three new Board members this year: Charlie Sims, President & CEO of Mackenzie Financial Corporation; Jason Smith, President & CEO of Solidifi Inc.; and Giorgina Bigioni, former VP Group Publisher of St. Joseph Media/Key Publishers. On behalf of the entire Bloorview community, we would like to thank you, our donors, for your unwavering support. As the stories on the following pages attest to, you have greatly enhanced the lives of children with disabilities and their families.

The Coriats’ Jour ney Acquirin g th e in gre die nts for a brigh t an d in de pe n de n t fu tu re Jessica Coriat wasn’t supposed to walk or talk, much less grow up to be an independent, outgoing teenager. But that was before she came to Bloorview. Jessica has cerebral palsy which affects her mobility and her vision. She’s had several surgeries and too much therapy in her young life. But thanks to Bloorview, her orthopedic surgeon, and her family, she’s thriving. Bloorview is a home away from home for Jessica, who first came here for an assessment when she was 1 year old. Now she’s 18, and participating in Bloorview’s Skills for Transition Program, which coaches teens like her in life skills, such as using public transit and preparing meals. For parents like the Coriats, who only have one child, it is perhaps the most pervasive worry – what will happen to our child when we’re no longer here t
and there are no other siblings to oversee her future? Bloorview’s renowned Life Skills and Transitions Programs teach the skills that enable children to grow up ready to lead active, independent lives, and just may be the most life saving of all.
Fund. Says David Coriat, “Life Skills and Transitions Programs are some of the most important programs for kids with disabilities, but these programs don’t get government funding. I am one of the lucky parents who can afford to pay for services, but there are many families who are not as fortunate. Our donation is a way to say thank you to Bloorview and to help other kids like Jess.” It’s exceptional generosity like the Coriats’ that propels Bloorview’s mission on behalf of kids with disabilities.
p
Jessica and her parents.
Jessica has come a long way since she first arrived at Bloorview. Her parents, David and Lynn, want to make sure other kids get the same opportunities. That’s why they pledged $1 million to Bloorview last year to establish The Coriat Family Life Skills and Transitions

And what’s next for Jessica? She says learning how to prepare meals is just a beginning. Apart from meeting new people, Jessica loves nothing better than watching the Food Network. Jessica plans to become a chef.

The power of philanthropy is awe-inspiring. Walking through Bloorview’s hallways, you can see it. It’s in every thoughtful detail of our accessible, light-filled and child-friendly facility, in the caring staff and, especially, in the lively faces of children. BMO Financial Group is one of the exceptional philanthropic partners who supports the urgent needs of the hospital, helping us transform the lives of kids like Naz. With a $450,000 gift during the capital campaign, BMO helped to make our dream of a new home a reality. With a further donation to outfit the BMO Financial Group School Library with state-of-the-art technology, BMO demonstrated their commitment to education for all children, including those with disabilities that make learning a challenge.

Last year BMO was the presenting sponsor for our gala fundraising celebration and dinner – An Evening of Possibility. Tom Flynn, BMO’s Chief Risk Officer, Vice-Chair Bloorview Kids Rehab and Gilles Ouellette, President and CEO of BMO’s Private Client Group, co-chaired this spectacular evening, which raised over $425,000 to support the treatments, technologies, therapies and real-world programs that are impacting children at home, across the country and around the world. According to Mr. Ouellette, “BMO is proud of its strong partnership with Bloorview and believes its support will enrich the lives of children with disabilities and their families.” Naz’s face lights up when he’s working on the school library computer. That’s the power of philanthropy.
A community spins its magic A wor thy workou t On June 26th, over 400 people from Toronto’s financial district pushed themselves past their limits at the 9th annual Bike for Tykes fundraiser for Bloorview. Participants pedaled stationary bikes in the TD courtyard to the tune of upbeat music, and raised over $200,000 for kids like Sequoiah. Ten-year-old Sequoiah knows a thing or two about physical endurance. Sequoiah has cerebral palsy and has been in and out of Bloorview for years. “Physiotherapy,” she says, “is hard work.” But thanks to Bloorview’s dedicated therapists and her own stamina, Sequoiah is walking, and she has decorated her leg braces with pictures of one of her favorite heroines – herself! Bloorview’s staff is committed to working wonders with kids like Sequoiah. Everyday our therapists, clinicians, and scientists help children t

with physical and developmental disabilities to do more and go further – not only to become physically stronger, but to learn the social and life skills that all kids need to lead healthy, active lives. The seven members of the Bike for Tykes Committee are not parents of kids with disabilities. Yet, for the past several years they’ve pulled together this extraordinary event, raising over $500,000 in total for Bloorview and making success stories like Sequoiah’s possible. Thanks to their commitment, kids like Sequoiah are able to lead ordinary, extraordinary lives, just like any other kid. According to the committee members, they get a lot of positive feedback about Bike for Tykes from participants who say it’s meaningful and fun. But the

best feedback is from kids like Sequoiah and their families. These days Sequoiah is busy being a kid. Her favorite sports are soccer and basketball and she loves to play Nintendo Wii. How wonderful is that? Bike for Tykes Committee:

WB Foundation r aises an eyebrow The smal l est ge sture makes a world of diffe re n ce Dr. Tom Chau has been called a ‘wizard’. Corvin and his parents know why. Corvin is an adorable 9-year-old with curly blonde hair and an infectious smile. Corvin has cerebral palsy, a condition which affects his voice and the movement of his arms and legs. Corvin’s ability to speak is limited to two-word sentences and, because of his physical challenges, he is unable to use a conventional communications aid. It seemed that Corvin would never be able to express himself fully – until
he began to work with Dr. Chau and his team at the Bloorview Research Institute. A renowned biomedical engineer and Canada Research Chair, Dr. Chau is pioneering communication solutions for kids like Corvin, novel solutions that are based on subtle body processes like heartbeat and skin temperature, or on tiny physical movements like a blink of the eye, a thrust of the tongue, or, as in Corvin’s case, a lift of the eyebrows. For Corvin, Dr. Chau’s team developed a prototype switch connected to a computer that Corvin can turn on by simply raising his eyebrows. Corvin is now playing video games, and, eventually, he will be able to type. Dr. Chau believes in the unique potential of each child. He is committed to unlocking that potential. From that commitment came his vision for the Infinity Centre for Access Innovations –
p
the world’s first interdisciplinary centre dedicated to discovering accessible and affordable technologies that allow kids like Corvin to communicate – kids who can’t speak or move. But there is more wizardy going on here. In 2008, the WB Family Foundation, a private foundation set up by the Beamish family, donated $1 million to the Infinity Centre for Access Innovations. Bob and Marilyn Beamish, their children, Brian, Heather and David, and the rest of the WB Foundation Directors were impressed by Dr. Chau’s vision for the Infinity Centre. “The WB Foundation believes that all children should have access to communication. We are thrilled to be supporting this revolutionary project,” says Heather Beamish. This is the magic of philanthropy. Just ask Corvin.
