The Ethel V. Leaver Foundation gives $3.5 million to Holland Bloorview There is a lot of history between the Leaver family and Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. Dianne Richards, niece of Ethel V. Leaver, tells the story of how the family of longtime donors saw their connection to Holland Bloorview deepen in the 1970s, when a young family member was injured in an accident that resulted in a lengthy rehabilitation. This family has never forgotten the profound ways in which Holland Bloorview helped them recover. Now, the family has made a generous commitment to help change the lives of thousands of other children with disabilities. The Ethel V. Leaver Foundation donated a $3.5 million gift to Holland Bloorview to benefit autism research and to create the George, Ethel and Joyce Leaver Inpatient Unit. On behalf of the Leaver family and Foundation, Ms. Richards says, “We want the best for all the children at Holland Bloorview. I hope we can help as many children Joyce Leaver as possible.”

The Biggar Endowment Reaches Goal

Dr. Biggar

Bob Armstrong and Doug Biggar have been friends since their school days. While one pursued a career in finance, the other began a career in medicine. Years later, they would reunite, volunteering and working for Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. A former medical director of the Hospital, Dr. Biggar was an early pioneer in the use of the steroid deflazacort in the treatment of kids with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, while Bob raised money for the Hospital and stewarded the invested assets of the Foundation, which today are valued at $100 million. In 2012, with Doug thinking about retirement and Bob ending his long years of service on the Foundation’s Board of Directors, the idea of The Biggar Endowment emerged. Doug worked on the vision and objectives of the endowment while Bob was busy raising money with other friends of Dr. Biggar, including The Ward Family Foundation and The Harold E. Ballard

Foundation, who were significant donors in the early days of the endowment.

Dear Friends,

In December 2014, The Biggar Endowment reached its goal of raising $1 million thanks to a spirited matching campaign by the Armstrong family. Friends and client families spared no effort to rally for the cause. In addition to 116 individual contributions, the concert event Music Heals has raised more than $106,000 for the endowment over the past three years.

You will likely notice that our report to donors looks different this year, but we know that you will quickly see that the heart of it remains the same. As always, this report is more than just a retrospective look at the ways your generosity helped shape our year. It is a celebration of change. As donors who support Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation, you make every day an opportunity to change the world for kids with disabilities.

Funding from The Biggar Endowment will help clinical investigators, like Dr. Laura McAdam, develop innovative programming to empower youth with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy to live fulfilling and rewarding lives.

You make change possible. Come and walk through Holland Bloorview with us. You will see the profound impact of your commitment. Your support inspires our clinicians, scientists and staff who work tirelessly to create a better world for kids with disabilities. Most importantly, you help nurture every child and family that comes to Holland Bloorview. You give them more hope for the future.

An improved quality of life does not happen overnight. First, kids with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy need to believe it is possible. Then it will take a communal effort by the young person with muscular dystrophy and a network of supportive family, friends, physicians, health care professionals and service providers to make it happen. Many lives have been extended thanks to Dr. Biggar’s deflazacort treatment and his compassionate care of kids and families. One day Dr. Biggar may fully retire, but The Biggar Endowment will guarantee, for all time, that new and innovative strategies are developed for young people with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. This will ensure that they receive the support they need to have a better quality of life and live healthier, happier lives.

In December, Holland Bloorview Foundation launched a new Change for Kids digital fundraising campaign. Inspired by the health care teams at Holland Bloorview who change lives every day, Change for Kids gave people an opportunity to honour those who make a difference in their lives. The campaign focused on the #HBYOUfie, a new way to take a simple photo or video and turn it into a show of gratitude for the people around us who change our lives. Tennis star Milos Raonic created a #HBYOUfie and encouraged others to do the same. Milos Raonic Chatelaine’s Editor-in-Chief, Karine Ewart, donated and challenged her readers to create their own #HBYOUfie while Mitchell, a Holland Bloorview Ambassador, raised $1,700 for Change for Kids at his school.

This report is just the beginning of our conversation. When you visit the Foundation website, you will see more stories about the donors and partners who gave to Holland Bloorview this year with a heartfelt generosity that is truly inspirational. Thank you for everything you do to change the world for kids with disabilities.

CHALLENGE

Holland Bloorview Soccer Challenge On September 9, over 100 soccer enthusiasts laced up their cleats and descended onto the pitches at Downsview Park to participate in the inaugural Holland Bloorview Soccer Challenge. Spearheaded by longtime supporter and former Foundation Board Chair Nitin Kawale, the event raised $60,000 for kids with disabilities. The friendly afternoon of competition saw 12 corporate teams give it their all for a good cause, and included special appearances from hockey legends Darryl Sittler, Brad May and Ric Nattress who participated as part of CISCO’s All Star Team. Members of the Toronto FC also Martin participated in this inaugural event.

Dr. Chau and the WB Family Foundation Board

In 2008, the Infinity Centre for Access Innovations was in the very creative mind of Dr. Tom Chau. He had a clear vision to create the world’s first interdisciplinary Centre dedicated to helping develop solutions for kids who are unable to communicate because of severe disabilities, but he needed the support of donors to transform it into a reality. The WB Family Foundation, with its mandate to help Canadians by supporting innovations in medical research, education and health care, knew right away that there was a spark of something special in Dr. Chau’s work. They generously committed a $1 million gift to fund his research.

In five short years, the Infinity Centre for Access Innovations has grown to become one of the world’s preeminent research hubs on access technology projects with 45 Masters and PhD students and more than 100 Undergrad students trained. The Centre has produced an unprecedented volume of research, with Dr. Chau co-authoring 115 journal articles relating to research advancements.

“One of our key priorities when giving is to ensure that we can measure the results. We have seen first-hand the impact of our initial gift and have absolute faith in the momentum that the research will continue to move forward,” says Ms. Beamish.

“With any initiative, you can have all the wherewithal, but you really need the right individuals to lead in order to create the solution you’re trying to achieve,” she adds. “I am just “We made that commitment seven years ago so thrilled that Dr. Chau continues to have the and watched along the way all the successes vision to move forward and I anticipate the day when all kids – regardless of disability – that Dr. Chau had,” says Heather Beamish, are given the opportunity to communicate.” President of the WB Family Foundation. The Foundation was so inspired by this success RESULTS that they have stepped up once again. With the potential for new advancements within the next five years that would see some of the Infinity Centre for Access Innovations’ communication devices become commercially available on a wider scale, Ms. Beamish says that this was the perfect time to renew the WB Family Foundation’s support of Dr. Chau’s work with yet another astounding $1 million gift.

Igniting Fitness Possibilities for Kids of All Abilities When Canadian tennis star Milos Raonic made his first visit to Holland Bloorview in 2013, he had an inkling that it would not be his last. Raonic is a Holland Bloorview supporter who, through his namesake foundation, is deeply committed to removing any barriers that prevent children from living their fullest and most healthy lives. Milos and JJ So naturally, when Raonic learned about Holland Bloorview’s Igniting Fitness Possibilities program, he immediately knew that this was a program after his own heart. “Holland Bloorview is an amazing hospital. It is a place where I can make a direct impact on kids with disabilities. The Igniting Fitness Possibilities program is so important because it gets kids moving and physically active, while helping to meet their social needs. Ultimately, the idea is to teach them what my parents taught me – that few things are out of their reach,” says Milos Raonic.

As a proud supporter of hockey, Scotiabank’s $600,000 gift has allowed Holland Bloorview to develop a concussion handbook and education programs to provide the most up-to-date information on the management of youth concussion. The aim is to demystify concussion recovery and increase awareness about how these injuries need to be treated to best promote a healthy return to activity for children and youth.

“We are proud to support the concussion research at Holland Bloorview,” says John Doig, Chief Marketing Officer at Scotiabank. “This type of Canadian innovation will really make a difference in the lives of kids and families across the country and Scotiabank is excited to be a partner in making it possible.”

Before the campaign was through, $100,000 had successfully been raised for Igniting Fitness Possibilities, with $50,000 coming from The Milos Raonic Foundation. It delighted Raonic to learn that his challenge had motivated donors to give so generously to the program. He continues to be a champion for the program, believing it enriches the lives of kids with disabilities, and says they deserve as many opportunities as possible to live an active lifestyle. National Bank, another significant donor to Igniting Fitness Possibilities, pledged a $100,000 gift through its One for Youth program. National Bank supports the program as it creates a positive impact in the communities it serves by embodying a strong commitment to child and youth wellness. Currently, the program is able to reach 7,000 children across the Toronto area. “Our hope is that this program will expand to reach as many children as possible. Eventually, if it can go national, we would be thrilled,” says Rob Sainsbury, the managing director of Investment Banking at National Bank. As a program that is designed to be sustainable, hope for growth is a very real possibility thanks to the support of visionary donors like The Milos Raonic Foundation and National Bank.

Scotiabank Supports Pediatric Concussion Research The Concussion Centre at Holland Bloorview is one of the first Centres in the world to focus on pediatric concussion research and education. A concussion can be scary. When a child sustains a concussion, parents immediately look for information on what to do and where to go.

Chefs from An Evening of Possibility

An Evening of Possibility The Irish have a wise proverb that says, “Laughter is brightest in the place where the food is.” Thanks to the culinary direction of Arron Barberian and Bob Bermann of Barberian’s Steak House, An Evening of Possibility saw Holland Bloorview transform into an intimate space filled with laughter, inspiration, and generosity – all shared over delectable artisanal dishes that were hand-crafted by 16 Canadian culinary greats. Donors and sponsors went above and beyond this year to help raise more than $440,000 that will help kids with disabilities. Since 2007, An Evening of Possibility has raised more than $3.6 million for Holland Bloorview Foundation.

Previous research conducted by the Holland Bloorview Concussion Centre shows that between 10 and 15 per cent of all youth hockey players will experience a concussion during the season. The Centre is developing treatments and tools to help kids recover faster, as two to three players on every hockey team in the province will be sidelined by a concussion this year alone.

The Milos Raonic Foundation put out a call to action and challenged donors to rally around this vital new recreation program. The response to his challenge was overwhelming.
