UP, UP & AWAY! 2009 – 2010 REPORT TO D ONORS

Lett er from the Chair It has been an honour to serve as Chair of the Board of Directors over the last two years and see our efforts result in the merger of two great foundations and an institutional name change that recognizes the generosity of a remarkable family. In this unprecedented year, Bloorview Kids Foundation and Bloorview Childrens Hospital Foundation merged in June 2009. With over $60 million of invested assets, the new Foundation is Canada’s largest foundation devoted exclusively to improving the lives of children with disabilities and their families. In December 2009, the Foundation became the recipient of the largest private donation ever made to a childhood disability organization in Canada. The hospital is honouring this commitment by renaming itself Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital (Holland Bloorview). The Holland Family’s gift is the cornerstone for the $80 million No Limits Campaign for Childhood Disability launched in early 2010. The Foundation is most fortunate that George Lewis, Group Head, RBC Wealth Management, has agreed to Chair the Campaign. The Foundation is blessed with an extremely capable and dedicated Board of Directors. Three Board

members are retiring this year: Marilyn De Mara, Dr. Ben Alman and John Kustec. We are grateful for the time, guidance and passion they have invested in Holland Bloorview over the years. I would like to thank Valerie McMurtry, President and CEO of the Foundation, and her exceptional team for their high standard of professionalism and execution. Finally, on behalf of the entire Holland Bloorview community, I would like to thank you, our donors, for your unwavering support. You have greatly enhanced the lives of children with disabilities and their families.

Letter f rom the Pres ident Deciding to launch a fundraising campaign during a global recession takes conviction in one’s cause, and confidence in the community. I’m lucky to work in a place where courage is a daily encounter. Whenever I take a walk through our parking lot, I see parents and caregivers lifting and arranging their children into wheelchairs and walkers. As I step into the elevator I usually meet some of our kids travelling with their therapists or caseworkers, making their way about their own days. It is both a humbling and inspiring experience, as I am constantly reminded of the challenging journeys of children with disabilities.

with the collective commitment of the thousands of other donors who made gifts of all sizes in a challenging economy, have given us every reason to believe that we are “Up, Up and Away” and that you, our community, will continue to invest in the futures of our children. I would like to thank and acknowledge the leadership and dedication of our Board Chair, Tom Muir, who will be retiring after a two-year term. Tom has served childhood disability with distinction and honour. His leadership and wise counsel have made us stronger.

Valerie McMurtry Holland Bloorview is an organization that is consumed with the question, “what more can be done to improve the quality of life for these children?” Our new $80 million No Limits Campaign for Childhood Disability is our most ambitious yet. Our goal is simple: to make sure that there are always funds available to do more and do better for children with special needs. As you read through this year’s report, I know that you will share our excitement and gratitude for Bill and Susanne Holland’s genuine concern for children. The Holland Family’s transformational gift, combined

In making a new gift to the No Limits Campaign, Susanne and Bill Holland have become the single largest contributors to the cause of childhood disability in Canada. In just a few short years, the Hollands have donated $26.2 million. For this exceptional generosity and leadership, the hospital is being renamed Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital.

Sheila Jarvis, President and CEO, Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, Trinity and Dr. Golda Milo-Manson, Vice President, Medicine and Academic Affairs

In keeping with their desire to help families meet the day-to-day challenges of raising a child with a disability, the Hollands are investing in the recruitment of world-class physicians and clinician scientists to work with parents, youth and the talented staff at the hospital to improve care. “What parents want most from Holland Bloorview is the best care for their children. Right now, demand for services far outstrips supply,” explains Bill Holland. “I’d like to get to a point where we’re able to meet the needs of all children in our community that need help. It’s a lofty goal, but that’s what we aspire to. Recruiting top talent and investing in research are two of the ways we can work towards faster, better and more effective care.” Mr. Holland adds: “We figured out pretty quickly that Holland Bloorview is the ‘go to’ place in Canada and it’s clear to us that it is the only organization that’s in a position to respond nationally to the complex needs of children with disabilities. When we make progress at Holland Bloorview we help children with disabilities everywhere." The Holland Family’s groundbreaking gift launches the $80 million No Limits Campaign for Childhood Disability. In addition to the donation, Mr. Holland is a member of the Campaign Cabinet where he is busy recruiting other fundraising volunteers and spreading the word about this incredible institution and the important role philanthropy plays in health care today.

“Going out and getting people who have the means and who are looking to do something for their community and trying to show them that right here in our backyard is an amazing institution that does incredible things everyday, that’s my job now. Our gift is really just a starting point,” says Holland. “When you make a contribution to a place like Holland Bloorview and you get a letter a year later – from the mother of a child who was helped in a very significant way there – that is the greatest feeling you’ll ever have.”

donor to Holland Bloorview. We want to help parents give their children the

life they deserve. ~ Bill Holland

A Stronger Foundat ion

The merger in June 2009 of Bloorview Childrens Hospital Foundation and Bloorview Kids Foundation set the stage for a remarkable debut of the new Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation. Valerie McMurtry, President and CEO of the new Foundation, says, “This historic merger is a launching pad for Holland Bloorview’s No Limits Campaign. Thanks to the foresight of our two foundations and the generosity and vision of our philanthropic champions, there will be no limits to what Holland Bloorview can do for children and families.” The merger of the two foundations created the largest pool of invested assets for a childhood disability charity in Canada - $60 million. Now, the new Foundation is poised to raise an additional $80 million to significantly increase the invested assets available to support Canada’s leader in pediatric rehabilitation care, research, teaching and learning. “The Foundation is committed to both the present and future needs of Holland Bloorview,” says Tom Muir, Chair of the Foundation’s Board of Directors. “There will always be children who will need our services and our support. We will continue to fundraise and manage our investments wisely to ensure the hospital will have the financial resources it needs to provide the best care through its programs and services, recruit the most talented and passionate staff, conduct groundbreaking research and teach the next generation.” Throughout its long history, Holland Bloorview’s leaders, donors and volunteers have worked hard to improve the lives of children and families every day while building capacity for the long-term. In 1899, the Home for Incurable Children was made possible by public contributions, donations of furniture and a twoyear rent free agreement for a home on Avenue Road. Sustaining the home in the early years demanded tight purse strings and a reliance on the generosity of others.

This legacy of community support endured through challenging financial markets, industrialization, world wars, the building of a Canadian national identity, universal healthcare and rapid technological developments. As Canada grew and matured, so did the vision of a better quality of life for children with disabilities, and with it a proud legacy of raising, managing and investing donations from private individuals and foundations, community groups and corporations. The efforts of the former Bloorview Childrens Hospital Foundation and Bloorview Kids Foundation have contributed to making Holland Bloorview the largest and most innovative pediatric rehabilitation hospital in Canada. So it was then as it is now. Fast-forward to 2010 where a new group of community and business leaders have a clear vision of Holland Bloorview’s future and a desire to be as successful as its predecessors in growing the invested assets of the Foundation. In this way, donors to the new Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation will continue to make history.

The Foundation is committed to both the present and future needs of Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. ~ Tom Muir, Chair of the Board

A Financial Ser vices Com pany Invests in Limit les s Fut ures When it comes to the impact of their philanthropy, most organizations want the sky to be the limit. Mackenzie Financial Corporation wants an impact with no limits.

By April, Jayden was back on her feet and beginning to say a few words. She was ready to go home, and, to celebrate, she wore the Cinderella costume she’d been too sick to wear on Halloween.

That is why Mackenzie pledged $1 million to Holland Bloorview’s No Limits Campaign to transform childhood disability care across Canada and around the world. Mackenzie’s gift will support high-impact strategies such as Holland Bloorview’s new Allied Health Clinical Leadership Chair.

Holland Bloorview is committed to raising the bar in Allied Health Care for kids with disabilities. Recruiting an internationally recognized leader to hold the Allied Health Leadership Chair is the single most effective means to do so. The first in the world, Holland Bloorview’s Chair will lead cutting-edge research in areas that make the biggest difference to families. The Chair will help us attract top talent in allied health professions and implement the best therapies in the world to help kids like Jayden.

Allied Health professionals, such as occupational therapists, physiotherapists, psychologists and speech language pathologists, play critical roles in childhood disability care. At Holland Bloorview, they are essential members of the multidisciplinary rehab team. Allied Health Care professionals work with kids like threeyear-old Jayden, helping them to overcome mental and physical limitations caused by congenital disabilities, traumatic injury or illness. Jayden came to Holland Bloorview in December, after being diagnosed with a rare form of encephalitis. Normally an independent, energetic ‘chatterbox’, when Jayden arrived at Holland Bloorview she was “like a baby,” says her Mom, Cheryl. “She had to re-learn everything — how to hold up her head, how to sit up, how to eat.” Holland Bloorview’s team of therapists worked with Jayden on a daily basis. Cheryl was amazed by their patience and how far they helped Jayden progress.

Charlie Sims, President and CEO of Mackenzie Financial, says, “Holland Bloorview’s work to transform the lives of children with disabilities is extraordinary and deserves extraordinary support. Mackenzie Financial is proud to contribute to a brighter future for kids with disabilities and their families.” No limits to improving care. No limits to improving lives. Thanks to Mackenzie Financial.

A Printing House that is Passionate about Philanthropy Earle O’Born, owner of The Printing House Limited (TPH), and his wife Janice believe in giving clients more than excellent service. That is why their Canadian company has established programs to assist their employees in giving back to the communities where they work. Janice O’Born founded the company’s charitable office in 1983 with a vision to promote philanthropy to TPH staff. Janice sees Holland Bloorview as a natural fit for TPH. Also a member of the board of SickKids Foundation, she is aware of the crucial part Holland Bloorview plays in long-term care for children with chronic illnesses and disabilities. She describes the care provided by Holland Bloorview as the ‘arms around a child.’ Through in-kind donations, the sale of greeting cards and a payroll participation program, The Printing House has contributed many thousands of dollars towards Communication and Writing Aids for children and youth at Holland Bloorview. The Printing House’s generosity supports young people like Adam (above). Adam has a rare disease that

destroys his muscles: he can’t breathe without a ventilator; he is unable to speak and can’t move. Adam uses specially adapted equipment to communicate. Thanks to “Mighty Mo”, a ‘voice machine’ developed at Holland Bloorview, Adam was able to make his voice heard for the first time—when he was 16. With the support of donors like The Printing House, young people like Adam can overcome their physical limitations and lead richer, fuller lives. As Kim Macfarlane, a Holland Bloorview Therapeutic Recreation specialist, says, “Adam loves visiting with people and having one-on-one interaction, and the talking machine gives him the power to initiate conversation and express his personality.” Above: Janice O’Born, owner of The Printing House, and Valerie McMurtry, President and CEO, Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation.

A G randfat her ’s Love has N o Lim it s Wally Clayson’s first grandchild had a rough start in life. A difficult birth was followed by a diagnosis of cerebral palsy at 18 months. In spite of her physical challenges, Jennifer was determined to thrive. Luckily, she also had her family—and Holland Bloorview. At the time of Jennifer’s diagnosis, Wally was the owner of Wally Clayson’s Service Centre in the neighbourhood. One of his customers told him about Holland Bloorview. As Wally tells it, “The specialists at Holland Bloorview were the first ones to say something could be done for Jennifer. They were quite upbeat about her cerebral palsy and what she would be able to achieve.” Jennifer received care at Holland Bloorview until she turned 18. In the meantime, her grandfather felt the desire to give back to an organization that ‘‘was doing so much for Jennifer.” He started by donating the

proceeds from the tire air machine at his garage. Not satisfied with this, he organized a golf tournament through the Automotive Aftermarket Retailers of Ontario (AARO), where he was President. The first tournament raised $200. Seventeen years later, the annual AARO Golf Tournament for Holland Bloorview has raised over $270,000 towards much-needed programs and services for children like Jennifer. Like her grandfather, Jennifer demonstrates boundless determination and a generous spirit. No one was prouder than Wally when Jennifer graduated with Honours from Carleton University in 2005. Today, Jennifer, 27, owns her own townhouse and works as a Probation Officer for the Ministry of Children and Youth Services. “She’s come a long way,” Wally says, “and now she wants to help other kids.” Below: Bill Burkimsher, Luanne Fedisoff, Sue Burkimsher, Bonnie Black and Wally Clayson.

An Evening of Possibilit y Now in its 4th year, the Recipes for Possibility fundraising initiative, which includes, An Evening of Possibility dinner, has raised more than $1 million in support of Holland Bloorview’s extraordinary hospital for children with disabilities. On November 23, 2009, Holland Bloorview hosted An Evening of Possibility, gathering 250 of Toronto’s business and community leaders for a night of fine dining prepared by some of Canada’s finest chefs. Holland Bloorview would like to extend a sincere thank you to RBC, our presenting sponsor, and to all of our generous donors who supported the Recipes for Possibility fundraising initiative.

In memory of Demetre Iordanidis Demetre Iordanidis was a gentle man with a warm smile. When traditional Greek music played his body would sway, his eyes would close and his baritone voice would sing aloud. When one of Demetre’s grandchildren suffered a traumatic accident five years ago, he understood the critical importance of Holland Bloorview. The late Demetre would be very proud to know that donations in his memory went to this special place. Laughs for Possibility Comedy Event Janice Lawrence C.
