PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE “2012 is the Year of the Dragon. In the Chinese Zodiac, the characteristics of the dragon are: Bravery, Innovation, Self-assuredness and Passion.”

Dear Fellow Members, 2012 is well under way, and already we can look back at some very successful events in January and February. This includes a well-attended poolside BBQ, two wine tastings, a movie night, two (sold out) Comedy nights, and a stellar performance by Dutch comedian Kristel Zweers, to name but a few. We also saw the opening of the outdoor Serambi bar, which has added to the vibrant atmosphere at our Club. As most of you have experienced by now, significant improvements have been made to our Food & Beverage offerings. Chef Remco has redesigned the menu, with a slightly smaller selection, but which also has some tasteful new additions. Please provide us with your feedback on our new menu, as the plan is to upgrade the menu every 6 months. Some more good news can be reported with regards to our membership numbers. At the time of writing, the number of active members is 1731, up from 1700 in January 2011. A warm welcome to all new members! The Main Committee, together with the Club’s management staff, is determined to strengthen the financial situation of the Club. We have set ourselves ambitious targets on generating additional income and reducing costs. We will be continually working on improving the quality of our F&B offerings, which will result in higher member satisfaction, as well as additional revenue. We’ve also put an active sales and marketing program into place to attract new members and promote our meeting and banqueting options. Besides revenue improvements, we will be realizing further cost efficiencies.

The increase in revenue from new and existing members, from higher quality F&B and well organized events, in combination with a strict cost control program, will not only make the Hollandse Club a financially healthy club - thus guaranteeing our long-term success - it will also allow us to continue to invest in the upgrading of our facilities. 2012 is going to be a defining year for the future of the Hollandse Club. I’m confident that our Club has a lot of potential to attract new members of all nationalities and to engage our existing members more effectively. Staff, management and the Main Committee are committed to implementing the required financial measures, while continuing to offer a full range of activities and facilities for you and your family. We will be sharing our detailed plans at the upcoming Annual General Meeting, which will take place on 27 March. As we have some important decisions to make regarding the future direction of the Hollandse Club, I encourage you all to attend this AGM. 2012 is the Year of the Dragon. In the Chinese Zodiac, the characteristics of the dragon are: Bravery, Innovation, Selfassuredness and Passion. We need to be innovative in strengthening our financial situation and we need to be brave in our actions to implement the required changes. We are selfassured on the huge potential of our Club, and most importantly we are very passionate about all of this. As always, I very much welcome your feedback and suggestions, and I look forward to seeing you all at the AGM and at one of our upcoming events. On behalf of the Main Committee, Robert Gorter President, Hollandse Club

GM’S MESSAGE

“We have something for everyone in the months to come and are looking forward to some great memories from the year.”

Dear Members, The Year of the Dragon is in full swing and the Club has already planned an array of big events and interesting activities for members right up to the end of Summer. We have something for everyone in the months to come and are looking forward to some great moments. First, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all the new members who joined us during the Open House on 25 February and say a big thank you to all our members who introduced them into our new family. The Club has been growing steadily over the last few months and we could not have achieved this without the extra effort from our entire team and the support of our members. As we grow in numbers, we are always looking to do more for our members in terms of both events and improvements. The new Terrace menu will see some good, old favorites, together with an array of new inclusions. With such a diverse membership base, it is not easy to please everyone, but rest assured we will try our very best! You can expect to see the Terrace menu change every 6 months, in addition to our monthly international promotions.

Serambi Bar With our new Mio Sports subscription in place, you can be certain that we will be showing as many live matches as we can from both the ‘Eredivisie’ Dutch league and British Premier League on channels ‘Goal TV 1 & 2’. The new furniture will create a fresh look and the Serambi Bar promises to become the ‘hottest’ corner to get your cold beer! Orange Ball & St Patrick’s Day Party Our 2012 Orange Ball Committee, along with Events Manager, Elmer Van Loon, have been putting the finishing touches to Singapore’s much anticipated Dutch event of the Year (page). The theme this year, ‘Moulin Rouge’ is totally different from any of the previous Balls, so get creative and dig out your fishnet stockings (Men not included). Tickets will be on sale in the first week of March, so pick them up early at the early-bird rate or make sure you get them before they sell out! Before we paint the town orange, we will be decking the halls in green for our St Patrick’s Day Party. It’s a chance for all nations to be part of this traditionally Irish festival (Main Hall, 23 March). Don’t miss this fun night – complete with Bagpipes and lots of Guinness.

F&B Events @ The Lounge Both our Valentine’s Day dinner and New Zealand wine tasting were very successful last month and were well supported by our members and their guests. Picking up where we left off in February, the Food & Beverage team have put together another special evening with the ‘Oyster Night’ on 31 March. If freshly shucked oysters and free-flow bubbly are your thing, head down to the Lounge on that evening. Another wine tasting evening has been set for 9 March, for our members and their guests to sample an extensive selection of Australian wines for ordering and delivery. Mark all the upcoming events in your diary (or phone!!) and see you all at the Club. Sincerely, René Verhulst General Manager

Events & Activities

New Year’s Dive The first day of the 2012 saw the first annual Hollandse Club New Year’s dive take place at Tanjong Beach. This traditional Dutch way of ushering in the new year is not a new phenomenon in Singapore, with Brandie Ledderhof-de Vries having organized the event in the past few years. New Year’s dives are organized all over the Netherlands, where the water temperature is a lot more harsh than the balmy 29˚ off the Singapore coast. The idea is that the freezing ice water wakes you up and cleanses all the sins of both the night and year before. With over 50.000 people taking the plunge in Holland on January 1, there were a few less doing the same here (about 50 members, nonmembers and their children). Still, everyone who took part, young and old, had a great time, with champagne corks flying and chef Remco serving 40 litres of Dutch pea soup to warm everyone up. We’re already looking forward to 1 January 2013!

Writer’s visit Paul van Loon Dutch children’s writer, Paul van Loon spent a week visiting, writing and singing with the children at Hollandse School in Singapore and happily made time to entertain other fans for an evening at the Hollandse Club on Thursday, 12 January. Many parents and even grown up teenage fans, who have loved his stories and characters for many years, were there, as well as Dutch kids who don’t attend the Hollandse school but wanted to stay up to meet their favourite writer. Paul managed to make the main hall feel quite intimate, as he was very candid about his life, work and the positive and negative aspects of his success. Great Stories Paul finds it a challenge to balance requests for public appearances with his true love, writing. He realises the impact he has on his young readers and also worries about children who are too young reading the books that he has written for older children. He writes his stories for himself, but he knows they have far reaching consequences. Even his autograph in a book, like the ones he wrote for young fans that evening, can have an impact. One great story he told was about a 19 year old girl who started to cry when he signed her book. She told him she had waited 10 years for his signature, as her mother had pulled her away from a busy signing session when she was 10 years old because they had to leave. The evening ended with two great songs about Dolfje Werewolf by Paul, with just his guitar and wife to accompany him. Many thanks to the Hollandse School and KLM for their sponsorship and support of this event.

Jesje De Schepper

On Saturday, 3 March, the Hollandse Club is proud to welcome talented Dutch singer and songwriter Jesje De Schepper, who is in Singapore to visit her sister and also to give Hollandse Club members a very special evening. This is her third visit here, and she’s taking time out from visits to Indonesia and Malaysia just for us. For one night only, you can listen to and enjoy Jesje’s original lyrics and music, as she sings her repertoire of songs about the little stories about her life and of other people she meets along the way. Potting Soil Her lyrics are mostly about the range of human emotions, but are often interlaced with a lot of humour. The songs are like little works of art, which tell stories about everything from her own love life to one woman’s obsession with potting soil. ‘Potting soil’ is the title of one of her songs, which she wrote after a friend criticized her for always writing about such serious social subjects. This seriousness is not surprising, considering that Jesje’s main musical influences include such socially conscious singers such as Joni Mitchell and Tracy Chapman. Not coincidentally, this thoughtful lady has also just completed her degree in Philosophy at Amsterdam University too. Still, she shows her slightly funkier side when she asks, “Is Prince also a singer/songwriter, because I love him too.” Singer/Songwriters Despite her American singer/songwriter influences and the growing popularity of this genre everywhere, Jesje writes all her lyrics in Dutch. In the Netherlands, this genre is enjoying some of the growing popularity that it is experiencing in the English speaking world. Jesje is part of a collective of music writers in Amsterdam, but there isn’t much room for this genre in the mainstream music scene there. Still, musicians such as Jesje can wow an audience with just their voice, a guitar or piano and great lyrics. Jesje sees this as a quality alternative for the new type of ‘Stardom’ of Idols winners or other stars, who don’t write songs or play their own instruments and who are more about the packaging than the content. Jesje is all about the content.

8TH february 2012

Hollandse Club Movie Night ‘De Gelukkige Huisvrouw’ or happy housewife If you didn’t know any better, you would think that this movie was about expat wives. This three tissue tear jerker is actually about quite the opposite. Award winning Dutch actress Carice van Houten does an excellent job of playing a new mother suffering from post-natal depression. The movie has a few shocking scenes that will give you goose-bumps of her actions at the start of her depression. The film also had a lot of raw humour and many touching moments during her stay in a mental institution. Luckily, the happy ending made us all go home feeling fine, but only after some of us shared our own pre- and post-natal stories in the bar….. More than thirty ladies took this opportunity to have a great night out at the Hollandse Club’s first movie night. The evening started with a delicious dinner. The salmon was coated with fresh, homemade pesto, with the creamy potato gratin and the baked vegetables. The accompanying salad was very Dutch; a big bowl with crispy lettuce, croutons, a lot of other crunchy ingredients and a very nice dressing. Chef Remco really knew what us ladies like for dessert; a molten chocolate lava cake with fine vanilla ice cream. After this delicious dinner, all the ladies took their seats in the indoor Lounge to watch the movie in cosy comfort. It seems that this new initiative, suggested by our volunteers, was really successful. The formula of good food, a good movie and good company is definitely something to be repeated. This dinner & movie night will take place monthly, and not only for the Dutch ladies! To draw an international crowd, we would like to show a prize winning movie from the international film festival from any country of origin (as long as it is subtitled). If you have a movie at home which is worthwhile watching, please let us know! See you next month for ‘The Tree of Life’ with Brad Pitt. Hopefully, more of our male members will come along too! Bobbi Brown Essentials Workshop If you can’t resist trying the latest shades of lipstick and eye shadow at a Bobbi Brown make-up store at Ion, Isetan, Robinsons or Tangs, you are going to love the Bobbi Brown make up workshop on Saturday, 24 March. Bring along your daughters or some friends to learn all the tricks of the trade and have some fun as well. The workshop focuses on the Bobbi Brown 10-Step Beauty, with participants enjoying a step-by-step hands on session using Bobbi Brown products. BB Philosophy Always at the forefront of fashion, the Bobbi Brown brand is a global phenomenon with almost 1000 stores in 56 countries worldwide. The brand is all about the lady herself; Bobbi Brown, the company’s founder and figurehead. Bobbi has been a self-confessed make-up addict since she was a young girl watching her mother get ready to go out. While still a teenager, she moved to New York to become a make up artist and was soon working on photo shoots with some of the top models and photographers. She got her big break in the cosmetics business when New York favourite, Bergdorff Goodman department store agreed to carry 10 lipsticks she had developed. She soon created the philosophy that remains at the heart of her business. Bobbi believes that make up is all about accentuating natural beauty. She says, “women want to look and feel like themselves, only prettier and more confident.” Workaholic Bobbi This youthful looking 54 year old is a total workaholic. When she’s not on TV, as the Today Show or Oprah’s beauty consultant, or writing best selling beauty books and articles for newspapers and magazines such as Health, she still does make up on the set for the likes of Vogue and New York fashion week designers. 10-Step Beauty The workshop will focus on how to bring out the most glamorous you, with all kinds of hints and tips on how to highlight your natural beauty. Orange Ball 2012 Orange Commitee

Featured Performers < The Deurzakkers Dutch party animals, Willem and Clemens, better known as the ‘Deurzakkers’, travel the world bringing that Dutch party atmosphere to any get-together that they show up to. They have scored many hits like “Het feest kan beginnen” and have 35 years of experience in getting the party started. This April, the duo will get you on the dance floor, singing along to their greatest hits and forming a congo line in the main hall and through the entire Club at the Orange Ball. No wonder they’ve performed at Dutch parties from Sydney to Bonaire.

10.seconds > Local favourite 10.seconds will perform Singapore’s best mix of dance floor hits, rock and pop classics, as well as some of the latest Top 40 hits. 10.seconds is a cosmopolitan mix of friends who provide a high energy, fun and engaging performance. It will be an unforgettably memorable night! The line-up is the one and only Miss Kalli Coplin on lead vocals, Singaporean Daniel Wilson on guitar and vocals, New Zealander Daryn Karaitiana on bass guitar and vocals, Singaporean Ian Su on keyboards and Aussie Simon Hyett on drums. 10.seconds has played at several of the big expatriate balls in Singapore, but there is nothing quite like the reputation of the Orange Ball. The Dutch have a reputation of really knowing how to have fun and throw a party, and so does 10.seconds! WWw.hollandseclub.org.sg The Hollandse Club 17

Events & Activities The best Queen’s Day ever Prominent members of the Dutch community explain why Queen’s Day is important to them and which Queen’s Day was their best ever? 11 years in Singapore, 11 years of orange activities. I haven’t missed any of them. While not bothered about Queen’s day when I lived and worked in my home country (just being happy to have a day off), suddenly it’s orangy all over once you live and work abroad. I really like the concept of the various events every year. The kick-off is with my all-time favorite “Koninginnenach“ @ Harry’s Boat Quay; the shophouse is covered in orange and the Dutchies really take over the place. The receptions organized by the Embassy are a fantastic start of the Oranje Ball at the Hollandse Club. I have sweet memories of the time when I was part of the Festivities committee at the Hollandse Club (from 2001-2006) organising a.o. the Orange Ball. A combination of lots of fun with the team members (who became close friends)... and stress... and eventually satisfaction after a turnout of approx 400 people having a good time in orange spirits. I look forward to another great Orange event this year; and hope that also many of our international club members will join our orange tradition! Lineke van Nederpelt Secretariat, Association of Dutch Businesspeople (ADB) “The Best is yet to come” When thinking about my Queen’s Day experiences back in The Netherlands, many fantastic memories about huge street celebrations in Amsterdam, and of course “KoninginneNach” in The Hague come to mind. However, there’s something special about celebrating this Dutch national holiday when you’re abroad, especially in a country like Singapore with so many Dutch residents and such a full schedule of Queen’s Day activities. Queen’s Day 2012 on Monday 30th April promises to become an especially exciting day, where the entire spectrum of Dutch culture can be experienced. We will start the evening off with a formal Queen’s Day reception at Suntec – kindly hosted by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Right after this event, busses will be waiting to bring everyone to the Hollandse Club for the traditional Orange Ball. At the Orange Ball we will be enjoying performances of the fantastic Aussie band “Band on the Run” and for some more Dutch culture we will be hosting no one less than De Deurzakkers! With classic hits like “Het feest kan beginnen” (“The party can start”), “Hedde gij nog aajer in de koelkast?” (“Do you have some eggs in the fridge?”) and “Lalalala” (“Lalalala”), I hope you all will agree that this is not something to be missed! So ask me again about my favourite Queen’s Day memories next year, and I’m pretty sure that the 2012 edition will be high on my list! Robert Gorter President, Hollandse Club The Queen saved my day As nursery and primary director, at the European School in Woluwé near Brussels, I was responsible for upholding the different national traditions. Dutch Queen’s day was one of the highlights of the school calendar. The Dutch there transformed into the biggest Orange fans imaginable. Brussels has chaotic morning traffic and that Queen’s day was no exception. I was running late and got stuck in a traffic jam of 53 school buses trying to enter the school premises. Eager to be on time, I chose to take an alternative road to school, one which, I am ashamed to say, only emergency vehicles are permitted to use. Sometimes, staff and parents would use that route and once in a while, the police would catch and fine the offenders. I calculated that the chances of getting caught that day were slim; it was Queen’s day after all. Unfortunately, the police did show up and I was pulled over. Lowering my window, I looked up at the police officer. He looked flabbergasted, so I quickly pulled out my driver’s license. He wasn’t interested. He just wanted to know why I looked so... orange! Only then did I remember that I was indeed dressed head-to-toe in bright orange, topped by a bright orange wig, for the celebrations at school. I explained this to him and he laughed warmly. He congratulated me on our Queen and let me pass without a fine. Needless to say, that day turned out to be the best Queen’s day ever. The Queen saved my day! Nelleke Deelen-Geuze Principal Hollandse School in Singapore In 2000 my wife, Barbara, and I had just returned to the Netherlands, after having lived abroad for many years, including the four years before, which we had spent in Argentina. We lived in the centre of the Hague, in the heart of where the famous Queen’s Night celebrations take place each year. On 29 April, Argentinean friends came to visit, who were visiting Europe for the very first time. They - and we- could not believe all there was to see that night. It was fantastic to see, so close up, that it is possible for 200.000 people to celebrate such an enormous party in such a pleasant way, with such a great atmosphere, in the centre of town. Having celebrated Queen’s day in so many different ways in other countries for many years before that, this experience really gave me that true ‘Orange’ feeling. Johannes W. G. Jansing Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Singapore

Events & Activities Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands

Johannes Jansing

Interview with Johannes Jansing, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Singapore since September 2009, on the occasion of the Dutch Queen’s Day 2012 What is the most important aspect of being the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Singapore? It is great to contribute to the relationship between the Netherlands and Singapore, promoting concepts such as knowledge, innovation and design, with a focus on five top sectors (water, life sciences, creative industry, energy and food/nutrition). In addition, it is exceptionally interesting to see how the Netherlands and Singapore develop as global hubs. What is your greatest challenge in your position as Dutch Ambassador in Singapore? An important aspect of my position is advising organisations in the Netherlands – businesses, government and knowledge institutions – based on what is going on in Singapore. Singapore’s policies are obviously not immediately applicable in the Netherlands, due to differences in cultural background, political system, etcetera. It is a challenge to analyse and translate Singaporean policy to the Dutch situation, in order to give the best advice possible. How do you view the Dutch community in Singapore and how has this community developed socially and economically in the past few years? It is nice to see the adventurous and very creative and flexible attitude of the Dutch. I feel Dutch people in Singapore on average are younger than some years ago, and more people seek out adventurous challenges on their own nowadays. You could describe this as ‘migration new style’. In my many contacts with Singaporeans, I continually notice that they appreciate doing business with the Dutch. I am proud that I am able to represent the Dutch as their Ambassador in Singapore. What, in your opinion, is the role of the Hollandse Club in the Dutch community in Singapore? Many Dutch people who live abroad are glad to find a place that gives them that ‘Dutch feeling’. The Hollandse Club provides that. Of course, many non-Dutch people are happy to be at the Hollandse Club too. I think both groups enjoy the Hollandse Club for the same reasons; the Dutch atmosphere, the ‘gezelligheid’ and hospitality. What does Queen’s day mean to Dutch people who live abroad? Just like the Hollandse Club, celebrating Queen’s day offers the feeling of being at home. It is good to see that Dutch people in Singapore celebrate Queen’s Day in different ways at various locations. Every event is unique, which offers everyone a chance to find that ‘Orange’ feeling in their own way. What can the Dutch community look forward to this Queen’s day 2012? This year, Singapore will see many activities and events taking place to celebrate Queen’s day. The Dutch organisations in Singapore, including the Association of Dutch Business people, DutchCham, the Netherlands Charity Association, the Hollandse Club, the Hollandse School and the Embassy have cooperated to arrange the calendar of events. There are children’s activities at the Hollandse School and Hollandse Club, while the grown-ups can attend the Embassy’s Koninginnedag reception and, of course, the Orange Ball at the Hollandse Club. We expect the events to be at least as enjoyable as last year. Queen’s Day is a Dutch highlight in the social calendar. What other highlights can we expect in 2012? At the Embassy, we will continue to provide unwavering support to the Dutch, in both economic and consular areas. We are expecting many delegations from the Netherlands, and our preparations for the Singapore International Water Week are in full swing. In cooperation with the other Dutch organisations, we look forward to making 2012 a successful year for the Dutch in Singapore. Furthermore, I am looking forward to the many great football matches that will be played during the European Cup this summer. Hopefully, the Dutch ‘Orange’ team will play a winner’s role in this tournament.

New Members Interview

Kat Dohmlo and Tait Tomb

New Members from the United States, Kat Dohmlo and Tait Tomb met at the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. These newly weds came across each other while doing volunteer work for the museum, and they soon starting dating. They were married on August 7, 2011 at the Warhol Museum in front of a Mick Jagger painting. They arrived in Singapore in October 2011. Kat’s job brought them here. She is in-house counsel for a German owned company. She is the company’s first attorney in Singapore. Tait left his job as a project manager at USAToday Sports to accompany Kat, and he is working on some freelance projects while seeking full-time employment. Tait was born in Ipswich, Massachusetts, was raised in Pittsburgh and lived in Arizona for a couple of years. Kat was born and raised in Pittsburgh. This is the first time either has lived outside of the U.S. Of course, we are interested in why they choose the Hollandse Club. They explain, “we love the pool and the terrace, for one. Also, as Americans living abroad for the first time, we wanted to make sure our experiences were as global as possible. We have both been to Holland a few times and enjoyed the people and the active lifestyle.” Finally, the Club is convenient to where they live. Tait is interested in tennis and is taking lessons. Kat enjoys swimming, the gym and hopes to find some time for Pilates and some of the other classes. They also think the comedy nights are great fun!

Theo, Zsuzsika and Veerle Oostinjen New members Theo, Zsuzsika and Veerle Oostinjen are from the Netherlands. Veerle is their 6 month old daughter, who is looking forward to meeting new friends in Singapore. Theo and Zsuzsika met at the Hotelschool in Scheveningen and have been together for 10 years. They were married on 18 June, 2010. After finishing a master’s degree at Nyenrode Business University in the Netherlands, Theo started working for Vopak, a tank storage service provider for liquid bulk and gas. As of November 2011, Theo took up the Regional Marketing position in their Singapore office. Zsuzsika is an exotic name, even by Dutch standards. Her grandfather was originally from Hungary and that’s where her original name is from. Zsuzsika quit her Marketing job to move from freezing Amsterdam to warm Singapore last December. They are looking forward to enjoying Asian customs, traditions and, especially, dishes, as food is one of their passions. Obviously, they are in the right place here in Singapore. One of the things they’ve noticed about Singlish is the use of “can, also can”, “have, also have”. Singapore is obviously the place where they ‘have and can’ everything. Besides the fact they will be at the Club to enjoy the swimming pool, they see the Hollandse Club as a great place to hopefully meet new people and experience some “gezelligheid”. They are looking forward to the Dutch Queen’s day and the European Football Championship celebrations in 2012.

“Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain” Our lives seem to get busier all the time. Singapore offers children and their parents endless opportunities to explore, but do we really stop, reflect, and get to enjoy what we are doing? Marga Gooren and Monique Oudejans will start hosting their Parent-N-Child ‘Wellness Morning” at the Hollandse Club this March. This Saturday morning workshop is all about spending quality time with your child, aged 6-10 years, and having a lot of fun! The workshop allows you to relax and enjoy quality time together. The workshop is divided into breathing practice and yoga to feel energised with Monique, combined with surprising and empowering insights provided by Marga’s positive psychology exercises. This morning is a gift to your child and to yourself. The ladies have planned it so you and your child feel this is a great bonding experience. The Integrated Approach Before Marga and Monique met, they were both searching for a more integrated approach to ‘wellness’, which they describe as being well in body and mind, with yourself and others. Mutual friends at home in the Netherlands brought them together in Singapore, where they soon discovered each other’s interest in wellness. The seeds of their Parent-N-Child workshop, as well as their ‘Power in your Pocket’ workshop for women, were already sown at their first meeting, which coincidentally took place here at the Club. Monique has been a member of the Hollandse Club since she arrived in Singapore 5 years ago. Yoga has been an important part of her life for far longer and now she runs Yogaworkx, providing private, group, corporate and kids yoga classes in Singapore. She is very enthusiastic about sharing her insights and life experiences, in the hope that she may teach from the heart and inspire others to share in the limitless benefits of yoga. Marga’s background is very traditional, as she studied medicine and worked as a GP in the Netherlands and China for over 10 years. She discovered that traditional medicine failed to make some patients feel better and happier and she started searching for a more body-mind approach. She trained in ‘neuro-linguistic programming’ or NLP, and later on in Positive Psychology and Mindfulness, all of which provide tools to help you become aware of your thought- and behaviour patterns and to change them. Her health coaching business Aqua and Lime helps many women who suffer from fatigue, low self-esteem and related health problems. East meets West Living in Asia has inspired Monique and Marga, as ‘wellness’ is not just a term but also a way of life for many cultures here. When Monique moved to India, she was fascinated by the way yoga is a part of everyday existence there. She got up as early as 5 am to practice yoga. You may visit a spa for a feeling of ‘wellness’, but in India ‘Ayurveda’ or ‘science of life’ is integrated into daily life. Children even do yoga as a part of their school day. Marga also coaches clients in ‘mindful eating’. The ladies explain how we all have good intentions of eating better and exercising more. The head knows what’s good for us, but the heart has to follow too. Marga and Monique emphasize that wellness and healthy living are all about finding balance and having fun. That’s why the workshop they have put together is anything but dogmatic about health. The morning they have prepared for you will have you moving, chatting, laughing, drawing and dancing. A tasty and healthy vegetarian lunch is included. The feedback they have received about the workshop from parents and children has been very positive. One mother was pleasantly surprised to find her young son practicing yoga the morning after the workshop. She sent the ladies a thank you email saying, “it has been a beautiful morning and a wonderful bonding experience. Thank you for this amazing gift. I could see my son shine!”

Get in touch with Monique and Marga if you wish to take part with your child. Art in Tradewinds Photos by Kate Curtis-Evans In March, Andy Cunningham’s drawings will be replaced by work of a totally different medium in Tradewinds bar. Andy’s friend, British photographer, Kate Curtis-Evans will exhibit photographs there for the next 2 months. Kate moved to Singapore with her husband, Phil, and two sons, Tom, aged 9 and Jack, aged 8, in February 2009. Singapore, with its unique mix of both Asian and Western cultures and history, has provided a dramatic back-drop to her passion for photography. Previously self-taught, Kate completed a Basic Photography course in December 2009, followed in March 2010 by a Further Adventures in Photography course. In April 2011 she undertook the Intermediate Photography course at the internationally renowned Objectifs School of Photography and Film-making in Singapore under the tutelage of Kheng Li Wee. She is also a member of the Photographic Society of Singapore. Her portfolio includes product photography for websites; studio and outdoor portraiture for individuals, families, or companies; school, sports and social events; lifestyle and travel photography; and fine art photography. Her website www.katecephotography.smugmug.com displays much of her best work. She is available for commissions covering a wide range of subjects from family portraits to corporate projects. Geocaching at the Hollandse Club Geocaching is the most modern form of treasure hunting using GPS and can be played worldwide as well as in Singapore. It’s all the rage and now the Hollandse Club is getting involved too! There is a great website (www.geocaching.com) and an app to explain the aim of the game and help you get started. It’s amazing how many treasures you can search for in your area. There are more than 5 million geocaches registered worldwide. Where ever you and your children are you can search for the hidden locations. You also get to choose whether the hidden object is close by or far away. It is totally free and you only have to register (using your name and email address) in order to receive a password. You can start playing straight away and even hide your own geocache! Now you can find some treasure at the Hollandse Club and receive clues to get something special! Have fun. Esther Hazelzet Hollandse Club intern and experienced Geocacher

At Home with the De Vegt Family Photography by Olivia Kwok

Raise High the Roof Beams Their family must be the tallest members of the Hollandse Club. You can’t miss Liesbeth and Jan de Vegt and their three grown-up children, Bas, Jody (when they are in town) and Rob, when they come down to the Club for sports or a night out. Only the extra tall Piet at the Club’s Sinterklaas party is taller than her son Rob. This is their second posting in Singapore and they have been active Hollandse Club members both times.

DAIS Elephant Parade

Mondriaan Style Cow

One of the first things that attracted Liesbeth to their home in the Binjai area near Swiss Club Road was the very high ceilings that give a great feeling of space and light. At least they don’t have to duck when they walk around their living area! Liesbeth saw the house when visiting a friend who lived there, but who was leaving Singapore. The front of the house makes it look deceptively like a bungalow. However, the great front door leads straight into a view down the stairs into the living room area. It is almost like a light Aladdin’s cave sunken behind the smaller façade of the house. The red and white walls and the geometric pattern of the black wooden roof beams are reminiscent of Dutch artist Piet Mondriaan’s symmetrical lines and blocks of colour. Liesbeth has a Dutch Mondriaan cow sculpture, next to an Elephant Parade sculpture designed by the DAIS (Dutch Artists in Singapore), several members of which Liesbeth knows personally.

Snakes and Monkeys Luckily, Liesbeth managed to get the house after having fallen in love with the high ceilings and especially the outside area. This house lets the De Vegts really profit from outside living, with plenty of room on the veranda for a large seating and eating area. “We really live outside here, which is the best way to live in the tropics. We eat and sit outside most of the time,” explains Liesbeth. Being so close to the nature reserve has its disadvantages though. The garden was so overrun with snakes, after a neighbouring house was demolished, that her maid threatened to leave and the garden has been invaded by monkeys since their dog has grown too old to chase them away. Still this house is a fantastic place for parties. Jan has been with KLM for his entire career and Liesbeth often entertains at the house for business and pleasure. The Hollandse Club often caters her parties and their garden looks magical when Mr. Boon decks it out with torches and candles. Members of the Dutch Business People’s Association (ADB) have also enjoyed a drink or two at one of the networking evenings hosted by Jan and Liesbeth.

London Skies This summer, Liesbeth will sadly be joining Jan in London, where he has already started working. Jan and those ADB evenings will be sorely missed. Liesbeth’s departure will also leave a gaping hole in the Dutch community here, where she was active on several different fronts. She is a much loved teacher at the Hollandse School kindergarten and was also a special assistant to Sinterklaas and his Pieters when they are in Singapore. Luckily, the HOI ‘Welcome to Singapore’ course and cultural excursions, which she started together with Jelina Kleine Staarman, will continue to assist Dutch expats getting settled in Singapore. The HOI website (www.hoi-singapore.com) describes how they started HOI because, “people usually only know what they wanted to know when they arrived in Singapore, by the time they are leaving Singapore.” Participants take home a wealth of knowledge and practical tips for everything from hairdressers to IPhone repair. The course is now held at Liesbeth’s fabulous house, but will find a new home at the Hollandse Club, starting this spring. Liesbeth and Jelina recognised that many Dutch women sometimes feel somewhat isolated after moving here, having left busy lives at home. The HOI course is an informal and fun way to meet other newcomers and hear all the inside tips from these two Singapore veterans. Travel Benefits Despite great travel benefits with KLM, Liesbeth laments that they haven’t had enough time to travel around South-East Asia. Jan often flies for work and tries to avoid it for holidays. One of their travel highlights was a family cruise around the region, which Liesbeth feared would be dull, but turned out to be brilliant, even for her critical teenagers. A useful part of the HOI course, are Jelina and Liesbeths’ great home furnishing tips. They know all the best places in Singapore for a bargain. Still, she has used her cargo freight connections to transport some great Asian furniture back to her home. A friend who lived in Jakarta recommended an old warehouse there. Liesbeth and some friends choose out some ‘teak’ pieces and had them flown back to Singapore. Unfortunately, she thinks the table top she chose is different to the one that was actually delivered and an antique expert friend is quite sure the wood isn’t teak. Still, this house exudes the same warmth and friendliness as Liesbeth. Singapore and the Hollandse Club will have to do without the De Vegts, but many thanks to them for all the warmth and friendliness they have brought to the Dutch and Hollandse Club communities over the years. We wish them well in London. HOI Course and Cultural Excursions www.hoi-singapore.com

Remco’s Recipes

Our chef shares some of his favourite secret recipes. Two British classics get the Remco treatment to celebrate British month this March. Beef Wellington The origin of this famous British beef dish is disputed. It is unsure whether the name was invented because it was the Duke of Wellington’s favourite or simply because the pastry looks like the famous boots that were named after him. There are no historical records of this recipe before 1966 to support the first theory. Wherever the name came from, there is no doubt that this is an ideal dinner party dish. It enables you to sit down with your guests and let your oven do all the work! The best part is that you can prepare it in the morning and serve it at night. The final cooking time differs depending on your oven. These times are based on those for standard hot-air ovens. Ingredients: Serves 4 – 4 Tenderloin steaks of 180 gram – Pepper and salt – Mustard – Approx. 300 grams of mixed mushrooms

– 1 clove of garlic – ½ onion – 1 dl. cooking cream

– Butter – 4 sheets of puff pastry (15x15 cm) – 1 egg yolk

Preparation: Thinly slice the mushrooms and finely chop the garlic and the onion. Season the tenderloin with pepper and salt and thinly spread them with mustard. In a frying pan, melt the butter until golden brown and fry the tenderloins for 1 ½ minutes on each side. Set aside. Fry the mushrooms until golden brown. Then add the garlic and onion. Fry until golden brown. Add the cooking cream and bring to the boil. At boiling point, turn off the heat. Season with pepper and salt to taste. Allow the mixture to cool. Lay the sheet of puff pastry on a lightly floured surface and divide the cooled mushroom mixture in the middle each of the 4 sheets. Place one tenderloin on each sheet and fold the puff pastry closed. Place the package upside-down on grease-proof paper. Mix the egg yolks with a dash of water and richly coat the pastry (gives a nice golden colour to baked pastry). Now you can place the Wellingtons in the fridge until needed. Preheat your oven to 180˚C. Remove the Wellingtons from the fridge and bake in the oven for 20 minutes. If you cook them straight away after preparing, they usually only need 15 minutes. When the pastry is golden brown remove from the oven. Serve them with salad and baked potatoes.

Posh Fish and Chips with a Dutch twist! One of the most famous fast food dishes in the world must be English fish and chips! This is a more sophisticated version of this snack, but still shouldn’t take you more than 45 minutes to prepare. Ingredients: Serves 4 – 4 white fish fillets of approx. 150 gram. (Cod, Halibut, Pangasius) – 750 grams potatoes – Pepper – White wine vinegar – Salt – Cajun spices For the batter: – 125 grams flour – 1 tbsp olive oil

– 2 dl. Pilsner beer – Salt and pepper

For the Hollandaise Sauce: – 1 dl. white wine vinegar – 1 dl. white wine – 1 dl. water – ½ onion

– 2 egg whites

– 1 clove of garlic – 4 strands of saffron – 1 tsp. dried thyme and rosemary – 1 tsp. salt

– 2 tsp. sugar – 4 egg yolks – ½ pack butter

Preparation: For the Hollandaise sauce: Put all the ingredients in a pan, except the egg yolk and the butter, and boil until 1/3 is left. Remove from the heat and strain through a sieve. Put the butter in a small pan and let it melt, but not discolor. When it’s melted remove from the heat and set aside. Allow the sauce to cool down and add the egg yolk. Replace on a low fire and whisk until fluffy. Keep whisking until you see lines appear in the sauce then remove from the heat. Slowly add the melted butter while stirring continuously. Bring to taste with pepper and salt. The best temperature to keep the Hollandaise is at around 40 degrees. Fish and chips: Preheat a deep fryer to 160˚C. Wash the potatoes with a brush and cut them in to fries. Pre-fry the fries for 5 minutes and allow them to cool. Make the batter by mixing the flour with the pepper and salt and whisking in the beer. Put the batter aside and whisk the egg whites until it forms peaks. Gently fold the egg white through the batter and put aside. Season the fish fillets lightly with the Cajun spices. Bring the deep fryer up to 180˚C. Gently dip the fish through the batter and remove any excess. Carefully place the fish (not more than 2 at a time) in the deep fryer for about 5 minutes or until golden brown. Remove and lay on kitchen towel to get rid of excess fat. Repeat this with the other fish fillets. Then deep fry the fries until golden brown. Drizzle the fries with the vinegar. Serve in newspaper! WWw.hollandseclub.org.sg The Hollandse Club 43

Oliebollen Tournament Friday, February 10th, there was the Oliebollen Tournament. It was very nice and very exiting. I played 4 games but lost 3 of them. For me, it is not so very important to win but it is more important that I have fun. We ate oliebollen and they were delicious. I earned 9 tennis points. When the games were finished, you were able to play with speedserve. That was cool because then you can see how fast your serve is. Afterwards there was lasagne, vegetables and crostinis for everyone and that was good. I had a nice day! Coaches’ Corner Quite often, I am asked how a player can improve their game. By employing some simple tips, you can make measurable improvements to your game. In this article, I have chosen some of the more popular tips you can use to help win your next match. 1. NEVER GIVE UP RUNNING FOR A BALL: Chasing down every shot gives you a better chance of getting the ball back in the court, even if you consider the ball is out of your perceived reach. Generally, more experienced players know the value of this tip, as they have learned over time. Just making your opponent play one extra ball can be the difference in winning or losing a point. A good attitude to take is: keep running for the ball, no matter what, until it has bounced twice. 2. IMPROVE YOUR TECHNIQUE: The quality of your “Swing”, thus good technique, can help you develop your game with improved power, accuracy, consistency, efficiency, spin and variety. Most importantly, good technique instills confidence when you hit the ball. It is important to practice your strokes. Getting some help from a coach will make sure you are practicing the correct technique. 3. GET MENTALLY TOUGH: Tennis is definitely a game won and lost between the ears. There are a couple of good tennis books I can recommend; “Winning Ugly” by Brad Gilbert and “The Inner Game of Tennis” by Timothy Galway. Both books are very insightful and club players all over the world have benefited from these publications. 4. WHEN IN TROUBLE GO CROSSCOURT: During a singles match, it often happens that when players get into a defensive situation, they hit down the line. Unfortunately, this choice means the balls has to go over the highest part of the net and there is less distance available to get the ball in. This choice often ends up with an unforced error or leaving the opponent with an easy cross court winner into the open court. Try going cross court next time, hitting the ball a little higher so it lands deep and benefit from the more friendly court dimensions. You will find yourself with more time to get in position and neutralize the situation. Good Luck in your next game. Scott Johnston Tennis Director Hollandse Club

SQUASH Once upon a time....................... There was a very exciting start to 2012 and we wonder if this year will turn out to be a vintage year. We live in hope. As soon as the second weekend of the year, our players were involved in 2 competitions – The Veterans Tournament at our club and the Singapore Closed at Kallang. Now, as I write this, the National Squash League (NSL) is starting and we are looking forward to this with some excitement.

THE VETERANS’ TOURNAMENT The minimum age to enter is 40, but to judge by the youthful appearance of some participants, notably babyface Belliveau and Prabis l’enfant, there was widespread speculation that there were some underage participants. A good thing about the Veterans’ Tournaments is that there are few complaints, as the people tend to forget what their grievances are and get on with matters at hand. After a day and a half of some scintillating squash, we had a new name to be etched on the Veterans’ Trophy - the one and only and our very own - Daniel Galinas.

“I could have been a contender”

The Veternas Champion Our very own Top Gun Daniel G

This should come as no great surprise, as Daniel has been thereabouts for a while now and is also the current holder of the coveted “Top Gun” award. However, it has been a while since we had a Hollandse Club winner and now here He is!!!!

SINGAPORE CLOSED Talking about winners… yes sir, yes indeed, we are talking about Fred Saarloos. Even though he was not exactly the Winner, he did have a podium finish and came 3rd for the whole of Singapore in the Men’s Veterans Category. This is the same Fred who played Jahangir Kahn in his youth, ran against Seb Coe and for all I know also danced with wolves. While we may joke a little, we do not show a lack of respect for this accomplishment and neither should you. You can see his photo attached here and he is often seen shambling around the club. When you see him next, get his autograph and buy him a drink. After all he did bring home the bacon...

“I am 3rd best in all of Singapore... Where did that carrot come from???” 52 The Hollandse Club WWw.hollandseclub.org.sg

“Wait a minute I talk you through it”

Sports & Recreation NATIONAL SQUASH LEAGUE (NSL) I did say that the National Squash League was starting this very week. As I write this, it strikes me that you actually don’t know when I am writing this. Never mind we can ignore these details. I guess it is enough to know it has started and it will go on until the end of May. This year, we have 4 teams, with some of the ladies joining the mens’ team. This is a historical event and we will record this for future generations. We are waiting for our team shirts to arrive from the factory in Sri Lanka. Once here we will take many photographs which we will publish.

Looking for the right shirt

My name is Stokes.. Ross Stokes.

Champions discussing tactics

SOCIALS We have good attendance and at all levels at the socials. We firmly believe in the motto that it is the taking part that is important. Everyone is welcome and made to feel welcome. Our new squash relaxation area is ideal to catch up with friends after a hard game of squash and over a nice cold beer. These are the little things that make life worth living......
