PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE “The Main Committee was very pleased with the overwhelming support we received for our proposals and we look forward to implementing these proposals in the coming months.”

Dear Fellow Members, Many thanks to all of you who joined the 2012 Annual General Meeting, either in person or by handing in your proxy vote. The large number of members who attended the AGM shows that members are increasingly interested in the well being of our Club. The Main Committee was very pleased with the overwhelming support we received for our proposals and we look forward to implementing these proposals in the coming months. As presented during the AGM, the Main Committee will focus on 3 aspects of the Club in 2012. First, we want to upgrade several of our facilities in the coming years, to give our members and guests an even better experience while using the Club. The increase of the monthly subscription fees will help us to achieve that objective. Very soon, you will see the first results of these upgrades.

potential for further growth. We have introduced a Sports Membership, which will target a new audience of individuals who want to play sports in a Club team. We will also continue to focus our member acquisition efforts towards Singaporeans, and towards the different international communities in Singapore. I believe the change in voting rights, as agreed to by the AGM, whereby Associate Members have equal voting rights to Ordinary Members, will help to position the Hollandse Club as a truly international Club. The truly international character of the Hollandse Club will be emphasized during the month of June, when the European Football Championship 2012 kicks off. This promises to be another great football event, and the Hollandse Club will be screening all matches live, in a true European atmosphere. We will have an Open Door policy during these football matches, so please bring all your family, friends and colleagues for a great football party.

Secondly, we are professionalizing our operations. Close collaboration between the Main Committee and the management staff of the Club, has resulted in very clear objectives for this year, tied to a commercial plan for 2012 and beyond. We will also implement a new Club Management System in the summer period. This new integrated system of Member Administration, Facilities, Events, Point of Sales (F&B) and Finance will provide better management information and more efficient processing in our administration teams.

Finally, the kids’ summer camps are back at the Hollandse Club! They are a great way to have your kids enjoy all the different activities that the Club has to offer during the summer holidays. You will find more information about this program in this magazine.

Thirdly, our focus will be on increasing our membership numbers. We already see a positive trend in our membership headcount, and the Main Committee is convinced there is

Robert Gorter President Hollandse Club

See you soon at the Club! On behalf of the Main Committee,

GM’S MESSAGE

“Enjoy your time at your club in the months ahead!.”

Dear Members, We have ‘survived’ the Dutch month of April and the Orange Ball. Now it’s South Africa to carry the flag and be the flavour of this month’s International Rotation program, with India in June. We have lined up some interesting South African dishes and wine for you to try. At the time of writing this message, the Orange Ball has not taken place yet, but I have already witnessed the usual meetings, planning and preparations of the Orange Ball Committee, with the many volunteers and our Events manager, Elmer. Thanks to everyone for your hard work and thanks to KLM, Heineken, Boskalis and Helutrans for sponsoring. This year, I want to place Karrey Quek, our own executive Housekeeper in the spotlight, because she and her team are always working behind the scenes to organise and put up all the decorations for the Ball. It’s not just for the Orange Ball. She and her team do all the decorations for any and every event at the Club. She is incredibly creative. In the process, she makes sure that all the furniture is there at the right time and she keeps the Club clean as well! Those beautiful flower arrangements that you find in the lobby every month are done by her personally. A big thank you to Karrey!!

HELPERS POLICY We have noticed a sudden increase of helpers in the Club and I want to remind all members that their presence should be the exception, not the rule. Helpers are only allowed with prior approval from management and only for a good reason. We only allow helpers to look after your children in your absence. While on the subject of children, I am afraid that some members use the Club as a child care centre. In other words, children are left behind in the Puppy room while the parents are not at the Club. Please remember that children under the age of 10 years are only allowed to enter or to stay on Club premises if accompanied by an adult and/or guardian. How kids behave is solely the responsibility of their parents.

THE VIETNAMESE ‘BUN’ RESTAURANT

JAPANESE ASSOCIATION RECIPROCITY

Signs have kept you informed about issues regarding the Bun Vietnamese restaurant. Unfortunately, they have not been able to secure work permits for their cooks. It is therefore with regret that we have to terminate the contract with them. We are currently looking in to different options to provide some worthy alternatives. Unfortunately, the MOM (Ministry of Manpower) is not extending any type of permits for foreigners at the moment, with the result that other expat staff working at the Club have also being forced to leave.

Some of you may know that our members have access to our neighbouring club, the Japanese Association. You just need to show your Hollandse Club membership card to enter. They have two restaurants with good, authentic Japanese food and they also have a small supermarket with many Japanese specialties.

NEW FACES You may have noticed a few new faces around the Club. We welcome our new F&B manager, Shafiz Iqbal. He will be taking over from Jan Faizal, who has been with us for two years now. Dean Chee, our Sports manager, will also be leaving us soon after 4 years. We would like to thank them both for their hard work and extend our best wishes for the future.

CONTROL OF MEMBERSHIP CARDS With the approval, and later this year, implementation of a new computerized management system at the Club, you are required to show you membership card at any time, but especially when ordering food and drinks. We will also be tightening the controls at the entrance gate and reception, so please make sure you have a valid membership card and a car park sticker on your car.

ANNUAL STAFF OUTING & CLUB CLOSURE On Monday, 28 May 2012, all the staff of the Club will participate in the Annual Staff Day and, therefore, the Club will be closed for the whole day. All classes, including tennis and swimming, will be cancelled and only security will be on duty. For security and liability purposes, we cannot allow anyone to enter the premises and therefore, security will stop you at the main gate. We appreciate your cooperation and apologize for any inconvenience.

TENNIS COURT RENEWAL Tennis courts 1 and 2 were resurfaced last year and, this summer, courts 4 and 5 will be done. We will inform you when the courts will be closed, but we will try to complete this during the summer holiday months to minimise any inconvenience. Next year, court 3 will be done.

EURO 2012 On 8 June, Poland will kick off against Greece for the opening match of the European Football Championship. Although the time difference doesn’t help, we will be broadcasting most of the matches live at the Club. The ‘Big’ matches and finals will be shown in the main hall and, in addition, they will always be shown in the Tradewinds and Serambi Bar. During the Euro Cup, we would like to invite all soccer fans to come and watch their national teams play at the Hollandse Club. Or simply swing by the Club and enjoy the great atmosphere while enjoying a cold beer.

KID’S SUMMER CAMP 2012 This year we are organizing a complete activity filled program for all kids at the Hollandse Club. Pick from a choice of two weeks to fit around your own summer holiday schedule. Book now because the programs are filling up fast! Enjoy your time at your club in the months ahead! Yours Sincerely, René Verhulst General Manager

Events & Activities Top Ten Ranking list for Euro 2012 Cristiano Ronaldo / Rui Alexandre Araujo shutterstock.com

Andrey Arshavin / Mishakov shutterstock.com

Number 10: Russia Russia eliminated England from the 2008 Euro tournament. They have a solid group of skilled players and they should be competitive. They will look for inspiration to experienced Dutch coach Dick Advocaat and star player Andrey Arshavin will need to get back to his best to give Russia a chance.

Number 5: Portugal Drawn in the group of death (with Germany, Netherlands and Denmark), Portugal might not have the strength and depth that some of the other European teams have, but they do boast one of the best players in the world. If Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo is playing at the top of his game, Portugal will be a team to reckon with.

Memut Ozil / Herbert Kratky shutterstock.com

Milan Baros / photoplanet.am shutterstock.com

Number 9: Czech Republic The Czechs will look to Peter Cech to keep things tight defensively and to Tomas Rosicky to create chances in attack. They will also hope former Liverpool striker Milan Baros can turn back the clock and add to his impressive 40 goal international haul.

Number 4: Germany One of the favourites for the tournament, after their impressive run in the World Cup and a qualifying campaign where they won every game. A strong squad will look to better their semifinal performance in the World Cup, with Memut Ozil pulling the strings in midfield. Look forward to an exciting ‘grudge’ match against the Dutch in the group stages.

Wesley Sneijder / Laszlo Szirtesi shutterstock.com

Greece fans / Andrey Yurlov shutterstock.com

Number 8: Greece Greece qualified above Croatia in an unbeaten campaign with their largely domestic based squad. They will need lots of hard work. The luck that they had in Euro 2004 looks to already be on their side after being drawn in one of the weaker groups.

Number 3: Netherlands The Dutch qualified easily for the tournament and reached the final of the World Cup in South Africa. Their squad is peppered with world class talent like Wesley Sneijder and Robin van Persie and a settled group of players should go far in the tournament. Can they finally emulate legends Gullit, Van Basten and Rijkaard, and bring home the silverware?

Steven Gerrard / sportgraphic shutterstock.com Franck Ribery / KENCKOphotography shutterstock.com

Number 7: France France will hope to restore some national pride after a disastrous World Cup in South Africa. Winger Franck Ribery will need to get to the level of retired Zinedine Zidane for them to progress from a tricky group involving hosts Ukraine, as well as England.

Number 2: England England will have a battle on their hands to do well in Poland and Ukraine despite fimally getting a new manager. Despite possessing some top players they have chronically underachieved over the last few tournaments. A top manager is needed to blend players like Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard into a winning unit. With levels of expectation lower than normal, can they emulate Spain and finally fulfill their potential?

Team Italy / katatonia82 shutterstock.com

Number 6: Italy The World Champions in 2006 always seem to manage to be in the mix for the later stages, but lack a world-class star this time around. Difficult opponents Spain and Croatia will provide a tricky initial test for the Azzurri.

David Villa / Natursports shutterstock.com

Number 1: Spain The World Cup Champions, defending European Champions, and the undoubted favourites for the tournament. A settled squad of international superstars like Villa, Iniesta, Xabi, Puyol and many others will take some beating. Can they handle the pressure of being favourites and reigning champions and keep the trophy in Madrid? WWw.hollandseclub.org.sg The Hollandse Club 9

Puur with Kristel Zweers By Cathelijne Botterwiek Dutch comedian Kristel Zweers captivated the audience from beginning to end with her show on Saturday, 25 February. This young and ‘pure’ lady was not very well-known amongst members of the audience, but after the show she definitely was! Kristel was supposed to perform the whole of her brand new show ‘Puur’ (Pure), but unfortunately her décor did not make it through customs. She solved this setback by performing parts of her first and second shows ‘Onschuldig’ (Innocent) and ‘Ruig’ (Tough), followed by some of ‘Puur’. As all three shows are based on experiences from her love life, this improvised format was still amusing, fascinating, and, at times, hilarious! Kristel is not the classic female cabaret artist, who sings emotional songs or does impersonations. She sticks to what she does best; she translates her day-to-day thoughts, irritations and dreams into a sharp monologue. Kristel reveals many aspects of her personal life to the audience. In ‘Onschuldig’, she talked about her boyfriend who cheated on her, about women who lose their innocence, about relationships and sex. In ‘Ruig’, she jokes about being single, her one night stands, and about people who have kids (and why she doesn’t want them…). In ‘Puur’, Kristel discusses her new found love, which brings quite some insecurities. At the same time, she is amazed by many things, and gives her honest and pure outlook on men, woman and the (or her?) world. All of this is done with a touch of self-mockery. Most people, especially the women in the audience, could identify with a lot of her stories and jokes! All in all, the audience loved this strong, pure and tough personality and we will definitely be hearing a lot more of her in the future. After the show, Kristel even took the time to evaluate the show and socialize with the Hollandse Club members and guests. It was great to meet her in person, while enjoying a few drinks in the bar! For more information see Kristel’s website: www.kristelzweers.nl

the Horn Family

Both Kristin and Ervin are from Haugesund, a city on the western coast of Norway, which is also the place they met and got together 15 years ago. Ervin’s mother is Indonesian (she met his father in Singapore in the late 60’s while he was working for a Norwegian company here), but Ervin was born and brought up in Norway. Kristin is a legal professional, whilst Ervin has a financial background. Their sons are Markus, who is 1 year old, and Fredrik who will be 4 this summer. They have been in Singapore since late August 2011. Ervin is on a long-term assignment with his Norwegian employer DNB Bank ASA, working in shipping finance under the corporate banking area of the Singapore Branch. Kristin is currently at home with Markus, whilst Fredrik is in pre-school. The couple lived in Bergen, on the western coast of Norway, for 11 years prior to moving to Singapore. They were on short-term assignment in Singapore for DNB in 2009 as well, when they enjoyed the climate, the food, the international environment and the way of living (particularly with small children), making the decision to come back easy when the opportunity for a long-term stay arose. The Hollandse Club was recommended by Ervin’s employer and other colleagues and friends, who are existing members. Working in Singapore is different from Norway in terms of longer working hours in particular. Therefore, spending quality time with the family is even more important. The Hollandse Club offers dining and a wide variety of facilities and activities the whole family can take part in, which is important to them in terms of spending time and potentially doing activities together. They will probably spend the most time dining and using the swimming pool. Both Kristin and Ervin play a wide range of sports. As they just became members, they haven’t really had the chance to explore the wide range of activities Hollandse Club offers, but they are looking forward to taking part in several activities.

AJ and Jetteke Hesselink We are Arent Jan (AJ) and Jetteke Hesselink. We have been together for literally more than half our lives as we are what you call ‘High School Sweethearts.’ Five years ago, our son Micky was born and two and a half years later our daughter Nora made our family complete. They are a great pair and are really fond of each other! We got married almost three years ago. It was a fantastic day as we didn’t tell our guests we would get married on our roof terrace in Amsterdam. Everybody thought they were coming for a housewarming BBQ. It was a day full of surprises, great food, wine, music, dancing, good friends, family, love and fun. These words represent what we value and what our lives have been about so far. We have been in Singapore for one and a half years now and came here for AJ’s work at Philips. Jet now works as a freelance Executive and Life Coach. Micky and Nora go to the Dutch School, where they are having a blast. All of us were born and raised in Amsterdam and we have been living in different parts of the city since. Travel has always been a big part of our lives, and working and living abroad has attracted us for a long time already. AJ actually spent quite some time travelling and living in Asia before in his past career as a journalist. Friends and family weren’t too surprised when we decided to take the offer and move to Singapore. We went to the Hollandse Club as guests a few times. We like the relaxed atmosphere and the fact that it’s very close to our place. It’s nice that there are always people around to hang out with and most importantly, the kids like it a lot as they meet their friends from school. We are already using the Gym frequently and we are considering swimming lessons for the kids there. We probably will attend some events organized by the club this year. But mostly you will find us hanging around the pool in the weekends and having some lunch or dinner.

the Van Aller Family Maarten van Aller and Eveline van Aller-Flinkerbusch are from Holland. Their children are Laura (11), Jan (9), Timo (6) and Lieselotte (3). They were married in France and recently arrived in Singapore from Woking in Surrey, England last January. Maarten’s works for Petrofac. They choose the Hollandse Club for the activities for their four kids and for themselves. They were members of the Foxhills Country Club in England, which also combined a lot of activities in one club and they liked that very much. It’s hockey, tennis, swimming and taekwondo lessons for the kids and golf for them. They are looking forward to the Orange Ball. 18 The Hollandse Club WWw.hollandseclub.org.sg

Jean-Marc and Imelda Morel We are Jean-Marc, Imelda, Genevieve and Joshua Morel. Genevieve is eight and Joshua is three years old. We are from South Africa, but have lived abroad for some time. We met at University in Johannesburg in 1991, and were married shortly after we graduated. We got married in a small church in my hometown Ficksburg, a small rural town in the eastern Free State in South Africa. It is one of the most picturesque parts of the country, but few international tourists would get to see it. We left South Africa in the late 1990s, as most young South Africans do, to work in London and see the world. We left with a suitcase each, expecting a two year stint; we ended up leaving London eight years later with a 40 foot container, a house, car and a daughter! After London, we spent a wonderful 5 years in Hong Kong, where our son Joshua was born, and had the opportunity to travel throughout Asia for business and pleasure. We recently moved to Singapore (in January of 2012), as I had an opportunity to take on a great role with a new firm. We are thrilled to be here. It is very different from Hong Kong and the space, greenery and pace of life is a refreshing change. We chose the Hollandse Club for three reasons: the family orientation of the club, great facilities and the international flavour of the people. Imelda is a keen Tennis player, the kids love swimming (and recently took a shine to bowling) and Dad loves a cold Heineken whilst watching them do it in the tropical heat. We are looking forward to making new friends and becoming part of an active community through the Club.

MEMBERS IN FOCUS For the Love of Sport STEVE DAWSON Those who regularly meet him around the Club call him a modest and friendly guy. You might not realize that this Hollandse Club member travels the world not only watching, but also commentating on many of the live sports fixtures you love to watch. ESPN’s website profile of Steve describes how he, “brings a unique style of enthusiasm and knowledge to the screen. Steve really is as pleased to be working in Sport as he seems to be.” This self-confessed sports addict has turned his passion into his career. How long have you been in Singapore and a member of the Hollandse Club?

I met my wife at university in London. She’s Singaporean so we visited on holiday a few times before eventually moving here in 1994. In 2006, our daughters started to enjoy swimming and we joined the Club primarily for its family atmosphere and laid-back approach to club life. Tell us about the work you do. I’m a journalist. These days that encompasses quite a lot. I’m very proud to work for ESPN Star Sports as a television presenter / commentator. Predominantly, I present a half-hour daily sports news show called SportsCenter and our live coverage of Formula 1. I also commentate on tennis, boxing and ONE FC’s mixed martial arts events. I write sports features for the Asian press and am just about to have my second book published, How To Be The Greatest Like Muhammad Ali. I’m writing an historical sports novel too but that’s been in progress for four years and could very likely take another four. Is your job as glamorous and exciting as it sounds? Are there any down sides? I occasionally have dinner with Formula 1 drivers, so it’s glamorous; but I usually eat dinner at my desk away from my family, so it’s angleworms. I’ve interviewed Harry Redknapp in the tunnel at Old Trafford, so it’s glamorous; but I spend 6 hours a day editing scripts, so it’s unglamourous. I’ve driven a Formula 1 car around the Hungaroring F1 circuit near Budapest, so it’s glamorous; but I’ve sat about in a warehouse from 10pm to 6am for a promotional film that lasts only 30 seconds, so it’s unglamorous. What is your all time sport’s highlight? What is your sport’s highlight that you were doing the commentary for? I was at Stamford Bridge when Kenny Dalglish’s goal won Liverpool the League in 1988, but on the TV, watching them win the European Cup in 1977 and Sugar Ray Leonard beat Marvin Hagler in 1987 were forging experiences. In terms of working at an event that became a sporting highlight, that was probably when Sebastian Vettel won the F1 championship in Abu Dhabi, but I’m hoping that will be surpassed when we present the London Olympics on ESPN and Star Sports later this year. Which sport do you enjoy covering most? That’s hard to say. Boxing or football. How do you maintain you legendary encyclopedic sport’s knowledge? I hate studying so it’s not from hard work. It’s from hard love I suppose. I am lucky enough to do a job that I’d probably do for nothing, so all the studying I do to keep abreast of news and developments, I’d be doing anyway. It’s sport! What is your own sport’s regime and which sports do you do at the Hollandse Club? I play tennis at the club quite often and use the gym to get the old heart, lungs and muscles (such as they are) pumping. Occasionally I’ll sling a basketball about up on the court. What are your predictions for Euro Cup 2012? England don’t look strong, sadly. Germany will put pay to my lot. Spain to beat the Netherlands in the final (sorry). Will you be coming down to the Club to catch the matches live in the middle of the night during Euro 2012? I certainly will, especially for Netherlands games. Steve Dawson’s latest book is titled: ‘How To Be The Greatest Like Muhammad Ali’ and is published by Marshall Cavendish in hard form and PodTribe in e-form. It will be available in book shops from May. Steve mentioned to the Straits Times about the Terrace grilled salmon as one of his favourite low-carb meals in Singapore.

If you have never been to the Indian sub-continent, a day out in Little India is the next best way to have an experience for all your senses. It may be a relatively sanitized Singapore version of the real thing. However, the atmosphere is great and the huge Indian community really does their shopping, eating and relaxing here. Just don’t make the mistake of going on in the weekend, when thousands of workers are there. An Indian Breakfast Start your day with some breakfast at the hawkers in Tekka Market or the Indian snack shops along Serangoon Road. Enjoy a creamy Mango Lassi yoghurt drink or a fragrant Chai Marsala tea will wake you up with its aromatic Indian spices and herbs. A roti prata with cheese, egg or plain would make a hearty snack or try a Vadai pastry, made from crushed rice and lentil flour or traditional Indian breakfast Idli, which is a healthy steamed bun and sauces, both also enjoyed with tea. 1. Tekka Market In the morning, take your time to walk around the rest of Tekka market. The fish market is considered the best in Singapore by many. There is an enormous variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, many exotic herbs and ingredients from all corners of the world. One stall (#01-117/8) sells all kinds of curry pastes to cook your own curries. Afterwards, check out the dress shops on the second floor. There is every type of sari, from an informal version that would make the ideal beach outfit, to intricately embroidered wedding clothes for both men and women. This is the ideal place to get your Hollandse Club Bollywood party outfit. Bargaining is encouraged. A Sari Guide Colour and decoration are key here. Neither should be subtle! A South Indian sari is silk with borders. These wedding outfits are white with a red border. North Indian outfits include the Punjabi suit or a salwar-kemeez with loose or tight pants. You could try a wedding lengahswhich is a flared skirt with a short top. 2. Tekka Mall or Little India Arcade Still haven’t found your sari? Head off to Tekka Mall for an amazing selection. There are bangles galore and other flashy jewellery. No trip to Little India is complete without a henna session (+/- $5-10). Remember you need to leave the henna on for half an hour. You can also buy the packs of henna and little books of henna patterns: They make great presents for a couple of dollars. Indian Beauty Try one of the many spas for eyebrow threading, an effective, but admittedly painful way to remove facial hair using 2 threads that are twisted over the skin. 24 The Hollandse Club WWw.hollandseclub.org.sg

3. Sri Veeramakaliamman Hindu Temple This temple at 141 Serangoon Road is one of the oldest and most impressive in Singapore. The temple was dedicated to Kali, the powerful dark skinned goddess who destroys evil, in order to comfort Hindi immigrants who are far from home. Statues in the temple depict her in her eight forms and show her avatars destroying evil, such as her many handed form carrying many weapons. It is respectful to wear suitable clothing and fold your hands in the temple. Travel clockwise around the temple, just as worshippers do when praying and receiving blessings from the holy men, who are the only ones allowed in the inner sanctum of the temple. 4. Mustafa’s No trip to Little India would be complete without a trip to 24 hour legendary department store Mustafa. This family owned Singapore icon is huge, hectic, cheap and packed to the ceilings with goods. The Mustafa family started off with a street stall and then a small shop, which was the only place Indians could get their herbs and ingredients. Check out the food section and create a feast at home with ready-made and semi-cooked Indian food. Little India Restaurant Guide Many restaurants have both South and North Indian dishes. South is generally spicier, with richer coconut milk sauces. Go for North Indian if you want less spice. South Indian Many along Racecourse and Serangoon Road: Muthu Curry, 138 Race Course Rd.: try Fish Head curry. Komala Villas, many locations - 76 Serangoon Rd. - Great baked goods like Masala Vadai. Vegetarian Tip! Ananda Bhawan (across from Mustafa’s)- try filled Thosas, Pau Bhaji, Puri with Channa, Chaat Masala and sweet dishes. North Indian Food Less Spicy (Naan, Samosas, Tandoori, Dahl & Paneer) Dehli North India, 195c Serangoon Rd.: More pricey, but excellent. Try Paneer Makhani and Malai Kebabs. Khansama Tandoori,166 Serangoon Rd.: Anything from the Tandoor oven is good. Ask for more or less spice.

Restaurant Review By Catelijne BotTerweck A Family Friendly Place: Rochester the Playhouse! We all love to go out with our kids; to take them somewhere to play or swim. Even having dinner outside of the house is a great way to end the day with family quality time. However, we also know what a hassle it can be entertaining young, tired kids while waiting for the food to arrive. We all experienced the difficulty of keeping them occupied at the table, without annoying the other guests. Most of us know the feeling of embarrassment when they throw a tantrum in the middle of a restaurant. What a perfect solution the Hollandse Club is, with the kids playing either in the playground or in the puppy room. They can relax a little by watching some cartoons, colouring or drawing something for mum or dad, or playing with their friends and the many available toys. The lovely ladies in the puppy room make sure they behave and stay safe, while the parents chat together or with friends, enjoy the food or even a glass of wine. Of course, we all want some variety now and then, and the truth is that there are a few other hidden gems in Singapore! This time I would like to share The Playhouse at Seb’s Bistro in Rochester Park with you. The Playhouse is an indoor and outdoor playground, housed in a colonial bungalow in the beautifully tranquil and tropical surroundings of Rochester Park. There are 2 floors of play area; the ground floor is a great playroom for children aged 7 and younger. This is open to public all times. The second floor consists of 3 rooms and is meant for slightly older kids of about 7-12 years old. The rooms can also be used for kid’s birthdays, private play-groups, structured play sessions, and other events. Outside by the al fresco cafe of Seb’s Bistro is a small play area with a big netted trampoline. Entry to these areas is part of the play fees (which are quite cheap!). It is good to know that the Playhouse is fenced off, and regularly cleaned and disinfected. Parents are allowed but not encouraged to stay in the Playhouse (except for parents with very young children or infants) as the concept is to allow parents some personal time while still being near their children. Seb’s Bistro is a full restaurant open from 9:30 am to late daily. Guests sit outdoors in the shade and protection from rain or sun to enjoy the peace and calm in lush surrounds. Cooling fans keep guests comfortable anywhere in the garden, which also has a nice fish pond. The restaurant serves a French-inspired menu all day and night, and a great weekend brunch too! So why not take your kids to the Playhouse for a lazy Sunday brunch, when they can play inside the playroom full of interesting toys, a ball pool, a small slide, several play kitchens, a swing, skippy animals and even dress up clothes! They can also opt to do a craft project with the ‘Playhouse Pals‘ or join the daily weekday singa-long sessions and story time. In the meantime, parents can sit outside on the beautiful veranda café to enjoy the great food and drinks in a relaxed way. Don’t forget to try the fresh milk shakes, and there is a tasty kid’s menu too! The Playhouse and Seb’s Bistro: 7 Rochester Park, Singapore 139218 Telephone: (65)6773 1312 (Seb’s Bistro) / 6776 6683 (The Playhouse) Website: rochesterhouse.com.sg The Playhouse Opening Hours: Monday to Thursday 10.00am – 7.00pm Friday-Sunday and Public Holiday 9.00am – 9:30pm The Playhouse play rates: weekdays $7 per hour or $12 for 2 hours (with max. of $15), weekend: $7 first hour, then $7 per ½ hour (with max. of $18). Hollandse Club Banqueting Boon’s Tips and Tricks for Entertaining With literally thousands of parties, dinners and business gatherings under his belt, head of Hollandse Club Banqueting, Mr Boon-Phang Tan knows all the tricks of the trade to make your special event a success. In the 42 years he has worked here, he and his team have catered thousands of members and non-members’ parties at home and at all kinds of exotic locations in and around Singapore; even on yachts, in airplane hangers and in ship-building yards. Many of us get quite stressed out when entertaining. Calling Boon and his team to take care of the food, drinks, setting up, flowers, extra tables/chairs, glasses, cutlery and plates and, even, entertainment is a great way to avoid any hassle. With all that experience, Boon has many tips for anyone putting a gathering together. Below are some tricks of the trade for all aspects of entertaining, for preparing, during and at the end of your event. Elements of a Great Event What makes a great party in Boon’s opinion? He believes that every fabulous and memorable party should include all these factors; - Good planning & location - Reliable & courteous catering & service staff - Great food & refreshments that span the duration of the party - Laying out a set up that encourages social interaction - Time for the hosts to enjoy their guests - A wide ranging guest list - Entertainment (if any) that connects with the theme or the personality of guests invited In addition to the above, each guest must be made to feel welcome, comfortable and relaxed. Preparation: 50% Planning & 50% Perspiration Preparation is the most important part of creating a great event. The details of the event, such as the number and type of guests, play a great role in deciding what kind of party you are giving. Is your party formal or casual? Are there children? Deciding on a theme for a party is really important. Usually a casual chat with the host/hostess will give Boon a glimpse into their needs and desires. He can then plan and work out the decor for the desired theme. Boon always liaises with the host/hostess about the type of celebration they are planning. The nature of the occasion has to be taken into consideration, such as a birthday, bon voyage, house warming, wedding or special occasions like Christmas or New Years, etc.

The Host with the Most Boon always remains calm and cool in every situation; something every host aspires to. Staying calm comes from having been in this business for so many decades. He has so much experience with the Dutch and international members’ parties and that has taught him what makes for an enjoyable and memorable event, which will meet their needs and expectations. Boon describes his, “love and passion for what I do and my strict motto that I stick by; that every customer’s needs and satisfaction should always be our banqueting department’s first priority. At all times, courteous and efficient service with a smile is an absolute must. Seeing smiles from guests at the end of a party always keeps me centered and calm, without fail.” The best host is someone who is relaxed, charming, confident and able to invite guests who will help start great conversations with other guests. Guests will usually feel very at home and at ease at parties if the host/ hostess is not uptight & stressed out. A relaxed host/hostess, will go a long way to making all their guests feel relaxed, help them unwind & have a great time. A Gorgeous Table Before a party, Boon changes his tie for a t-shirt and gets involved with his team in all aspects of the set-up, even carrying tables and laying a beautiful table himself. He has a great eye for detail. All glass and silverware must be polished. They use beautiful material or paper runners along the centre of the tables to match the type of food and atmosphere. For example, lovely batik material with the unsown seems folded under make a great runner for an Indonesian Rijsttafel table, with exotic leaves and flowers to match. Or why not place a banana leaf on the plate for Indian or Asian food. Boon’s team uses ribbons to match the country, theme or the colours of the company. They enhance a theme by tying them around napkins, chairs, champagne table skirts or flower arrangements. Everyone can make colourful menu or place cards to jazz up a table. Get creative with one of the many online printable table card websites. Lighting is key to creating the desired atmosphere. Candles are tricky here with fans and AC. Try Boon’s favourite fire proof bags from Ikea, weigh them down with sand, add a candle and keep the flame going for a change. Sophisticated White Boon often creates a clean and sophisticated atmosphere by decorating the party setting with crisp and clean white. Fresh white table clothes, napkins and chair covers can instantly give an elegant simplicity to your table. Add variety to your white accessories with pops of colour from flowers, napkins and other decorations. Brightly coloured petals, flower buds, glass beads or small fruits are casually strewn across the center of the table. Great Guests Boon and his team have had to deal with every type of party guest and has some top tips on how to deal with the less than ideal guest. For example, all of us have experienced that guest who has a little too much to drink. Boon says, “this is really quite simple. It is something all great party-givers must be prepared for. First, try to get the tipsy guest into a quiet room away from other guests; help them to the bathroom if necessary. Ply them with hot coffee or tea. Try to keep them calm and comfortable. Second, make certain they do not drive home in their drunken state. Instead book a taxi or if they have friends at the party, ask them to see the person home.” What about getting rid of persistent night-owl guests at the end of a long night? Boon says it really depends on where the event is being held. If it’s held at the Club, Club operating hours have to be adhered to. If it’s an outdoor event, the host/hostess will have the last say. In most cases, it is done gradually and subtly. Try stopping the flow of drinks, turning off some lights and getting helpers to quietly start clearing glasses and plates. Then resort to putting away tables & chairs. Your guests should then get the hint. Let Boon plan for you Even though you have read all Boon’s tips and tricks, you still might feel stressed out even thinking about planning your next soiree. The top tip is that Hollandse Club banqueting is easy, affordable and always a success. Call Mariah Said @ 6461 1112 or e-mail banquet@hollandseclub.org.sg for information about all the possibilities if Boon and his team plan a party for you at the Club, at home or at a location. Remco’s Recipes

South Africans love barbequing, which they call ‘braais’. They are so passionate about it that you should never mess with a South African and how to do his ‘braai’. Another popular meaty dish is Potjikos (from the Afrikaans for ‘small pot’), which is a delicious slow cooked meat and vegetable stew traditionally cooked in a round, iron pot. It is thought that the ‘Potjie’ came from the Dutch ancestors of the South Africans, who brought the heavy iron cooking pots (mostly with 3 legs) which hung from hooks over the open hearth. Recently, this traditional dish is enjoying a revival in South Africa.

Bobotie Another popular Cape Town dish is Bobotie, which is a curry meat casserole. Ingredients: • 2-3 tbsp oil

• 1 cup milk

• 1 tsp turmeric

• 2 thinly sliced onions

• ¼ cup vinegar or lemon juice

• 750 g ground beef

• ½ cup of raisins

• Salt and pepper - to season

• 2-3 slices of white bread, crusts removed and cut in cubes

• 2 tbsp sugar • 1-2 tbsp curry powder

• 5 bay leaves • 2 beaten eggs

Method: 1. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium flame. Add the onions and sauté until translucent and just starting to brown. Add the ground beef and break it up while sautéing until cooked through and crumbly. Remove from heat, drain of any excess fat and place in a large bowl. 2. Put the bread and milk in a bowl and soak for 5-10 minutes. Remove the bread and squeeze it dry, adding squeezed milk back into the bowl. 3. Preheat oven to 325°F. Add the soaked bread, vinegar or lemon juice, raisins, sugar, curry powder, turmeric, salt and pepper to the bowl with the cooked meat and mix well. Taste and adjust seasonings. The meat should have a pleasantly sweet-sour flavor. 4. Pour the meat mixture into a greased casserole dish and smooth out the top. Lay the bay leaves over the meat in a decorative pattern and press down lightly to make them stick. Bake uncovered for 30 minutes. 5. Beat the eggs with the reserved bread-soaking milk. After the meat has baked for 30 minutes, pour the egg-milk mixture over the top of the meat and bake for another 15-20 minutes, or until the custard is set and lightly browned. 6. Remove from the oven and serve hot with the traditional accompaniments geelrys (turmeric yellow rice with raisins) and mango chutney.

Beef and Beer Potjie Cooking Time: 2 hours Ingredients: Serves 6 • 15ml cake flour

• 250ml beef stock

• Salt and pepper to taste

• 15ml butter

• 4 carrots, peeled and thinly sliced

• 2 tbsp tomato puree

• 1 garlic clove, chopped

• 15ml oil • 1 bay leaf Method: 1. Coat the meat with a mixture of the flour and paprika. 2. Heat the oil and butter in the pot and brown the meat. 3. Remove the meat and brown the onions and sugar until the onions are nice and soft. 4. Add the beans, carrots and garlic, cover with the lid and allow the pot to simmer for about 5 minutes. 5. Replace the meat and stir in the herbs, beer, beef stock, tomato puree and bay leaf. 6. Cover with the lid and allow the pot to simmer for a final hour or until the meat is soft (stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon). 7. Mix the vinegar and cornflour and stir in. 8. WHATS YOUR ITN? The ITN is an international tennis number that represents a player’s general level of play. In time, it is hoped that every tennis player worldwide will have an ITN. Under this system, players will be rated from ITN 1 – ITN 10. ITN 1 represents a high level player standard and ITN 10 is a player that is starting to play competitively (can serve and return) on a full court using a normal ball. SO HOW DO I GET AN ITN RATING? We will be offering an assessment on Wednesday morning 16 May. Players register for a 30 minute session. The costs will be $20 per player. Be quick to make sure you get a spot! WHY SHOULD I GET AN ITN RATING? This assessment and rating allows you to pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses. It enables you to track and chart your own development and improvement. WHAT’S INVOLVED IN THE TEST? Players will be challenged to use a number of ground strokes, volleys & serves that measure control, accuracy and power. Good Luck in your next game! For more information or to register, please contact Scott Johnston 9038 9348 or email scott.johnston@savitargroup.com Registrations for the ITN grading close Friday 11th May.

Mannen van Staal (Ironmen) I have worked in the Maritime Industry for over 10 years and, while having a drink, we love to talk about the old days. In Dutch we have a saying: “Vroeger toen de schepen van hout en de mannen van staal waren, toen…” (Translates: in the old days, when the ships were still made of wood and the men were made of iron, back then…” Of course, none of us is old enough to have lived in those glorious days, but there is still the nagging desire to be like the men back then; the Amstel 1870 men, the real Ironmen. This desire pushes some to go beyond the regular workout and fitness regime. They train to become a modern day Ironman. If you come to the Hollandse Club on Monday nights you will see a group of men and women training with Nancy, Lulu and Michelle to improve their swimming technique, their strokes and their strength. For many of them, this is just part of a weekly training schedule. As well as swim training, at least 90-100 km on the bike and a 10-15 km run each week are needed to achieve the goal of finishing the AVIVA 70.3 Ironman. This consists of a 1.9 km swim in the open sea, followed by a 90 km bike ride and a 21 km (half marathon) run. On Sunday, 18 March, the latest edition of this race was held. On a beautiful calm Sunday morning, 1500 men and women gathered at East Coast Park to compete in an event which would test all of them to their limits. At 7:50am, my age group started with about 300 men all running into the sea at the same time. I tried to remember Nancy’s advice about long strokes and breathing technique, but forget everything immediately. This has little to do with swimming. I felt like a sea lion at feeding time. 300 men swam/ wrestled to the first buoy, pulling each others’ shoulders and legs, while trying to escape the crowd. Luckily, I found a less crowded spot after a while. Then I notice that the current had pushed me away from the main track; I was taking a detour… After 44 minutes, I finished the first part of this challenge. On to the bike! By now, the sun had climbed over the horizon and started to heat up. It’s 3 loops of 30 km on the ECP and along the airport; nice and flat! I saw some familiar faces from the swim training here and there. Everyone was focused on their own race, while battling the elements of wind and sun. The track has a few sharp curves and a few fly-overs to be crossed. I saw some athletes struggling to change their tires, while others had an unpleasant encounter with the asphalt right in front of me. I could barely steer clear. During the last 15 km, I start to feel my hamstrings. I thought, “this is too early!” There was still a half marathon to be run. When I got off the bike it was around 11:30am. I was still on schedule for a finish within 6 hours. However, early into the run, I felt my energy level fading a lot faster than planned. My hamstrings and calves started to act up. I needed to slow down. The heat had become a real spoil sport. 35-36 degrees and no shade made the last 2 hours of the race harder than I expected. Thankfully, there were buckets of ice water, sponges and very enthusiastic supporters to cheer us on. 6 hours and 6 minutes after I started the swim, I crossed the finish line. It’s unlikely that the Dutch will start to build wooden ships again, but after 18 March, we at least have another 5 Ironmen*:

SWIMMING TEAM BUILDING DUTCH DOLPHINS Whooo! Over 60 Dutch Dolphins joined the Team building session at the main hall of the Hollandse Club on Friday evening, 17 February 2012. There was a great atmosphere when the Team started to play the ice breaker games. Ice cream ended up on the Dutch Dolphins faces and smiles were seen everywhere. After the games; the Dutch Dolphins listened to a 40 minute presentation, led by Head Coach Nancy and supported by Senior Coach Michelle, Coaches LuLu and Anna and Assistant Coach Louise. Even the young people helped out in conducting the games. Subjects discussed included the vision, values, golden rules, what to bring for a race and training. Afterwards, we had a delicious dinner consisting of fries, pizza and hot dogs served by the food and beverage team of the Hollandse Club. The last 30 minutes we enjoyed watching videos of world famous swimmers like Michael Phelps and Ian Thorpe in order for the kids to visualize the strokes and improve their strokes by watching. I am looking forward to a year of great team work, improvement in strokes and a super-abundant amount of JOY!

NEPTUNE LEAGUE – 19th February 2012 A big thank you to the Hollandse Club, as we held the first Neptune League of the year hosted by the Southern Cross Dragons at the Hollandse Club. It was a wonderful event. We had swimmers from the Hollandse Club, Swiss Club, British Club, Singapore Island Country Club and the Southern Cross Dragons competing with each other. The Dutch Dolphins did very well. Overall, we managed to win 7 golden medals, 21 silver medals and 17 bronze medals. That’s a total of 45 medals. Well done swimmers and thank you parents and caregivers for supporting your children.

Sports & Recreation AQUADUCKS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Our annual Aquaducks Championships took place on 11 March at the Swiss Club. There were over 50 swimmers representing the Hollandse Club out of a 110 total swimmers. The weather was great, as well as the atmosphere! Thank you all for staying back for the medal presentation, as it is so fun to see those beautiful smiles on the kid’s faces when they are receiving their medal. A special applause for all the 7 year old girls, as that particular age group had over 20 swimmers which made it much harder to win a medal. Thank you parents for; coming early, cheering for your kids and for volunteering as time keepers. You are of great value to the AquaDucks Team. We are looking forward to many more swim meets in 2012. Come to training as often as you can in order to improve your strokes and times.

SQUASH SSRA Half Term Report We have now arrived at the half way point in the league and the Magnificent Oranje Duivels have a 50% record. What does this mean, as you are not a statistical genius? You would like this explained. OK, here it is! Team C (a la Vie) We don’t talk about them much as they seem to be languishing in the relegation zone, after most of their team deserted them during pre-season team bonding. Now their best player is complaining about backaches and the excuses and finger pointing (or maybe just the finger) have started. A crying shame, but there you go. Half-term score: 3/10 - Lost cause. Team D (Generates) They’re fronted by the formidable man whose name has multiple vowels. Fred, due to a ligament problem, continues to hobble around, but inspires his team to every better performances. Half-term score: 5/10 - In contention, perhaps, for the play offs. Team E (Bruno and the Boys) Led by their inspirational captain, Bruno he has made the E-team his own. There is talk that if ever Bruno were to leave Singapore, the Club will do him the honour of retiring any further representation in E grade. This is because no one could do a better job than him. The gossip is that the individuals in this team are highly motivated when they play and afterwards bond as a team around the bar. There are whispers that if a player does not give a 100% they are banished. Only after proving themselves in daily practice are they selected and then only as part of the cheering party. Dear reader, this is the team to be in and this is where it all happens. Half-term score: 9/10 - Definitely in contention for the play offs. Team F(lying F’s) Ahh Ohh… When they are playing you hear the refrain: “They seek him here, they seek him there, ladies choice, Paul Roberts they seek him everywhere” Supported by the master of ceremonies and motivator, the legendary Leslie Choudhry, this team is still attempting to discover its best starting 4. Actually, they have players in the squad who they have never even seen. Paul has an injured wrist, as he is too busy signing autographs for his legions of fans. In the future, the Squash committee have decided that Paul’s picture will be included in every edition of the magazine. Oops - sorry got carried away, but the man is a legend. Yes, he does need some sharpening of his man (not lady) management skills, as the team is not doing too well. I think next time he should include more ladies in his team. Half-term score: 3/10 - We are waiting for the team to play to their potential and they must try harder this half. Winner So, the Man of the Moment and the Captain of the year is young Bruno. Congratulations and your prize of a S$20 dining voucher awaits you. Pick it up from the reception by mentioning the secret password.

“De Vliegenvanger” by Ravelli

“Hersenspinsels” by A. LaPlante

“Koorts” by S. Noort

“Een klein beetje geweldig” by D. French

“De Laatste Man In De Toren” by A. Adiga

“IJsbarbaar” 10+ by R. Ruggenberg

“Verdwijnkind” 10+ by B. van Ede Biko is onopvallend.

“De witte veer” by J. Boyne September 1919.
