Dear Fellow Members, Congratulations to our members from New Zealand and our friends at ANZA for winning the long-awaited Rugby World Cup. What a nail-biting final it was! Great to see so many of you at the Club for the occasion.

There seems no letting up in the events calendar.

A couple of weeks early, but nonetheless the highlight of the kids’ calendar, is the arrival of Sinterklaas (Saint Nicolas) on Saturday, 19 November. The man hails from Spain, but was supposedly buried in Italy. He then made a come back, helped by his Moorish assistants to make an appearance in the Low Countries, as well as visiting Singapore. This holiday is a truly cross-border event.

I would encourage all international members to join in and partake in this traditional children’s party. Aptly, the coming two months will be cloaked in Belgian and Spanish themes. Please consult this magazine and our website for information on all upcoming events, including the Quiz Night (it’s back!) and the black tie Hollywood Classics Gala Dinner.

Singapore hosts the 2011 Veterans’ Hockey World Cup and the Hollandse Club is proud to host their Gala Dinner on 4 November. Some 800-plus participants are expected to dine on the tennis courts, especially converted for the occasion.

Our Club has seen many positive changes in recent months and we endeavour to continue improving members’ experiences. In this spirit, the Main Committee is initiating a development plan for buggy and wheelchair access to the Club and its facilities. The renovation of the children’s play area is also part of this development plan.

We are looking into the possibility of offering day care facilities and upgrading alternatives for the all-weather pitch. The Main Committee welcomes your input and ideas.

It is often said that Singapore is a transcient city. Perhaps it is for this very reason that people here are open-minded and welcoming to newcomers. Similarly, those whose time has come to leave may just temporarily lose sight of their friends, but will cherish them always in heart and mind.

After a total of some 15 years in Asia, Michaela, the kids and I have decided to embrace an exciting new challenge. I am confident that my successor and the Main Committee will not tire to ensure the long-term success of the Club and the well being of all members.

GM’S MESSAGE “for those of you who will remain in Singapore to usher in the New Year, do join in the Club’s festivities that we will hold right up to the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve”

Dear Members, The Holiday Season is approaching fast and we are only 60 days short of 2012 and counting! While most of you might be heading home to enjoy the traditional festivities in a more appropriate and cold environment, for those of you who will remain in Singapore to usher in the New Year, do join in the Club’s festivities that we will hold right up to the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve. During the past year, we managed to make some successful improvements to the Club, beginning with the new pool furniture, the revamp of the old Juliana’s into The Lounge, an improving Terrace menu, the hotel room transformation and a new look for the reception area. While these positive changes were ongoing, we also managed to hold several successful sell-out events during the year. A big thank you goes out to the whole team and everyone who volunteered, putting in that extra effort to make things a success.

KIDS IN THE CLUB As we are a family Club we are most encouraging of a ‘lively’ atmosphere and enthusiasm from our young members.

Though most of our Club kids are well behaved, there have been some case and complaints of children getting up to a fair bit of mischief recently. Complaints have reached us of chairs in the pool, littering, Olympic relay running through the Lounge area – fresh out of the pool and plastic-water-bag-fights all over the place! We would like to ask parents to remind their kids to be considerate of other members and the Club rules.

Please keep in mind that there might always be members who just want some ‘quiet and peace’ at our Club.

TOWELS What would my last message of the year be without mentioning our beloved towels? I would like to thank all members for diligently signing out and returning our new pool towels since the new practice has been introduced. I’ll be the first one to admit that the new arrangement is less convenient but we have successfully managed to maintain the number of towels in circulation since and unfortunately we need a place that is permanently manned to uphold that. As from 1 January 2012, we will discontinue the supply of white towels to the Poolside changing room since the majority of our members are aware of the new practice now, and we will only be placing the white towels at the Gym and the Tennis changing rooms.

HOTEL AND SPA Since their launch on the 1st of September, the Club hotel rooms have been operating at full steam and we are glad to announce good occupancy rates since their inception. It’s the ideal spot to book your visiting relatives and friends, or to let all those travelling executives from our corporate memberships enjoy a taste of the Hollandse Club while on business in Singapore for a ‘friendly’ rate. We have also reopened our Garden Spa located opposite the hotel rooms, providing for limited and pre-booked services through the Aspara Spa. To compliment our sport enthusiast members, we have also arranged for physiotherapy and sports massages to be available at the Garden Spa. THE LOUNGE The Lounge has just finished a successful Restaurant Week and looks forward to bringing members some exciting new F&B events like Wine tasting dinners, Chef’s Table, Guest Chef Dinners and a

lot more. Do remember that we provide excellent custom-made dinners with our new approach to ‘Dining by Design’ at the Lounge. If you are looking to hold a function, birthday or a small cozy gather with elements of fine dining then look no further. Our food & beverage department will cater to your specific needs and requests. For more information contact our Food & Beverage Manager, Jan Faizal at 6461 1118. In addition, it gives me pleasure to announce the arrival of another Chef, from Holland this time, as Chef Christian has decided to move on.

SINTERKLAAS CELEBRATIONS In customary and long-established fashion, we will be celebrating the arrival of Sinterklaas (St.Nicholas) again this year at Marina @ Keppel Bay on the 19th of November. Do not forget to register early and come early on the day itself, as the turnout is numbered in the hundreds, just to catch a glimpse of Sinterklaas and his ‘Zwarte Pieten’ at the Marina. The party then comes to the Club as we throw a proper birthday gathering for the ‘Goed Heilig Man’ in the Main Hall. Sinterklaas has promised to bring gifts again for all the well behaved children this year, so be on your best behavior young ones! A big thank you goes out to the Hollandse School, KLM and Marina @ Keppel Bay for making this event and happy children possible!

The Annual Ang Pow Fund

Throughout the year our Club staff have been working hard to bring you top Club service. Rules prohibit any form of tipping so that is why we have created the Annual ‘Ang Pow’ fund. Members are asked to kindly contribute to this fund as a gesture of goodwill and thanks to the staff for all their efforts throughout the year. In line with this programme in other member clubs, married couples December accounts are debited with $60 and singles with $30. The total sum contributed is then distributed equally among staff at Chinese New Year.

Members who wish to give more or do not wish to contribute at all should contact Cynthia Seow at arofficer@hollandseclub.org.sg before the 20th of December 2011. Should no contact be made, it will be assumed that members have consented to contribute towards the fund.

BRAZILIAN FIESTA 16th September was a night of BBQ Churrasco, Feijoada and buffet. Two chefs from Brazil Churrasco, Luciano and Izza brought Brazilian dishes that satisfied everyone’s taste buds.

We are also honoured to welcome the Ambassador of Brazil, Mr Paulo Alberto de Silveira Soares and his wife to join us for the night.

We would also like to thank Brazil Churrasco on Sixth Avenue and Club Street for the preparation of the sumptuous meal.

BBQ AT THE POOLSIDE As the summer holidays ended, we welcomed our members back to Hollandse Club by turning our poolside into a place like Rio de Janeiro for our welcome back party. It was an enjoyable Brazilian BBQ event, with music and live performances from two Samba dancers.

OCTOBER

German MONTH GERMAN OCTOBER NIGHT On the 22nd of October 2011, the Club held a special event in honour of all our German members at the Main Hall in conjunction with our German month of October. The Main Hall was laid out in full Oktoberfest style with a selection of delicious German favorites provided by Suntec City’s new German Imbiss stall as well as a wide selection of beer, beer and more beer!

The highlight of this full house event was live music from ‘The Tropic Oompah Band’. This five piece traditional ensemble played live music to give the Main Hall a real ‘Oktoberfest’ feel. Also, during the night, 3 couples pit their drinking skills against each other to be crowned the ‘Beer Champions of the Night’. The proud winner walked away with a pair of tickets to Universal Studios: Halloween Horror Nights.

The night turned into quite the celebration, with (you guessed it) members themselves taking to the stage and breaking into song. A big thank you goes out to all members, guests and our event partners for making it a fun and eventful evening and hopefully we can look forward to an even larger one next year! Prost!

The Annual Fashion Show at the Hollandse Club

a ladies only affair The Ladies Only Fashion show on 7 October was a sold out night of glitz and glamour at the Hollandse Club. All the 150 elegantly dressed guests were welcomed into a breath taking dining room, decked out in brilliant white with leopard and white tiger prints in honour of the theme of this World Wildlife Fund benefit night.

After a glass of Cava and a chance to admire the other guests’ outfits, the ladies sat down to a delicious 3-course dinner. In between the courses, there were four amazing fashion shows. The ladies were able to admire the clothes, jewellery and shoes, as the models walked around the tables for everyone to see and touch the designs up close. Guests enjoyed a wine tasting of complimentary California Freemark Abbey and Matanzas Creek wines to accompany each delightful course.

Events & Activities Fierce Looks for a Wild Night Sharon Connolly, Image Consultant from the Maximise group, hosted the evening with her usual brand of wit and extensive style knowledge.

She introduced Mrs. Sarah Ong from WWF, who highlighted that the proceeds of the event’s lucky draw would support their work for endangered species and habitats. The generosity of the guests meant an amazing $2,500 was raised for WWF projects. Fabulous prizes were sponsored by many health, beauty and wine companies in Singapore. The main prize was a pampered 2-3 nights stay at the luxurious Karma resort in Bali.

First on the catwalk were fabulous new season looks from Ziegler Shoes, located in Tanglin Mall. All the outfits were shown by real beauty models of all shapes, ages and sizes to highlight that with the right outfit everyone can feel and look great. This Danish designer store showed its versatility, with great clothes that suit Singapore weather. Guests were thrilled with the wonderful necklace, generously provided by Ziegler for the event’s jam packed goody bags.

Amongst the gifts and vouchers in the goody bag, there was a voucher from Change located in Holland Village Mall. This expat favourite boutique filled the stage with their lingerie and beachwear looks. The show was a vision with their collection to make any woman feel sexy. The real life models looked stunning. Mette Holte Jensen, owner of Change highlighted that the right undergarments can improve any outfit.

Dressed to Impress Anna Rainn’s It’s a Wrap dresses were another hit with the audience, as these flattering dresses came by in all lengths and colours. Ladies loved the styles and patterns, as they were able to touch the material as the models came by.

The final show stopper was the evening gowns provided by the Avana boutique on Scotts Road. There were more than a few oohhs and aahhs as the models and dresses came out on stage. Several ladies started planning evenings out just to be able to buy one of the exclusive dresses.

The ever popular best dressed competition was held at the end of the night, with a lady nominated by each table coming up on stage to be judged for a final winner. Veronique Boumann won the best dressed award and a bottle of Champagne for her lovely black frilly dress that suited her shape so well. Many guests partied the night away into the small hours. It was another successful evening of fine dining, fun and fashion.

Interview

Belgian funny man Bert Gabriëls will be appearing for one night only at the Hollandse Club on Wednesday, 30 November. This one man comedy phenomenon, with his own hit show on Belgian TV, took some time out to answer some of our questions and get you ready to laugh at his funny take on life. Bert swapped his high potential future after studying for Master’s degrees in Law, Anthropology and Philosophy for the uncertain lifestyle of a stand up comedian in 2004. He studied directing at the the Academy of Dramatic Arts of Maastricht, but wound up on the other end of the lens when he created the hilarious Belgian hit show Zonde van de Zendtijd or ‘Waste of broadcasting time’ with partner Henk Rijckaert. The show won the 2010 Flemish TV Star award for Best Flemish Comedy program. His theater shows, such as Druk or ‘busy’ have also been awarded many prizes.

Why did you give up everything you studied for to go into entertainment?

Ever since I was a kid and watched legendary Dutch comedian Toon Hermans on TV, I knew that was something I really wanted to do too.

So I took up theatre as a hobby during my studies. By the time I had a ‘real’ job, I figured it might be possible to just try being a professional actor and comedian for a while, and go back to my job if fail. So I didn’t really give up my job, I just took a break. However, that break is now, after 5 years, still going and I’m enjoying every minute of it.

How would you describe your brand of comedy?

It has been called ‘clever comedy’. It isn’t intellectual, but most of the jokes start from some kind of revealing insight (though often absurd) or from a social problem. And I’m not afraid to put some sarcasm in my shows.

Are Belgians generally funny people?

I don’t think Belgians are particularly funny, but we have a lot of good stand-up comedians, with some hilarious politicians as well, I might add. Belgians also have the funny capacity to work very hard for something they actually do not take seriously at all.

Have you been to Singapore before? If so, what did you think of it?

I’ve been there once, about 5 years ago for 3 days, to accompany a Singaporean girl back to her father. At that time, I was working as a tutor for unaccompanied foreign children, and sometimes they had to be brought back to their home country. Though I didn’t really have the time to sight see, I was impressed by the architecture. I’m looking forward to coming back and seeing some more.

What is your Singapore show about? Will you be making fun of expats or Asia?

I didn’t plan to do that, but you might have given me some ideas now. The show will be about the big and small problems of everyday life, the troubles of living in family relationships, and of course a bit about traveling.

We are the Hollandse Club. Will there be a lot of jokes about the Dutch?

I can’t promise I won’t be cheeky. The cultural differences between the Dutch and the Flemish will certainly be discussed!

What’s the funniest thing about the Dutch?

Apart from their accent, their tallness and their names you mean? Definitely their idea of gastronomy: milk at lunch and food out of a wall (Bert is referring to the infamous ‘kroket’, the deep fried, meaty snack sold by various dubious Dutch snack bars out of vending machines of dubious hygienic standards).

Let’s hope Bert enjoys our Hollandse Club kroket a bit more when he visits us this month.

Events & Activities DID YOU KNOW? Sinterklaas is, of course, the patron saint of children, but did you also know he’s the patron saint of sailors. That’s why he always travels by steamboat, even here in Singapore. The steamboat carries all the presents, chocolate letters, coins, marzipan, pepernoten, kruidnoten and speculaas cookies, Sinterklaas, all the Black Peters and the horse to Holland from his house in Spain. When Sint and Piet come to Singapore they fly first and then take the boat from the airport.

Black Peters all go to Sinterklaas’ special school to learn how to read and write, but they also receive climbing lessons to learn to carry all the presents up to the roof and down the chimney. All that soot makes their faces very black, but their clothes stay clean because of the special material the sewing Peters use to make the colourful suits.

Sinterklaas’ horse is called Amerigo. Amerigo has a little foal that is called Pegasus, like the winged horse in old stories. Of course, Amerigo and Pegasus are the only horses who can climb on to roofs of houses.

Does Sinterklaas sleep with his beard under or above the bedspread?

The children’s book ‘Alles wat je wilt weten over Sinterklaas (en nog veel meer!)’ answers more than 130 questions children ask about Sinterklaas. From ‘How does Sinterklaas know that I have moved?’ and ‘Where in Spain does Sinterklaas live?’ to ‘How can I become a Piet’? This playful book is full of surprising questions and creative answers and also explains the historic background of the Sinterklaas tradition. How did the name ‘Sinterklaas’ come about?, why does Piet throw candy around?, Sinterklaas’ ring and much more.

Lieve kindertjes in Singapore!

Jullie weten dat Sinterklaas op dit moment heel druk is met alle voorbereidingen voor zijn grote reis naar Nederland en alle andere landen waar kinderen wonen die mijn verjaardag elk jaar weer willen vieren. Maar tussen het inpakken van de koffers door, wilde ik jullie heel graag eens een mooie brief schrijven. Dat doe ik niet meer met pen en papier tegenwoordig. Sinterklaas gaat wel een beetje met de tijd mee, en ik heb nu ook een computer!

Sinterklaas wordt, zoals jullie weten, ook een dagje ouder. En het kost heel wat tijd om elk jaar naar Singapore te komen. Zo’n lang stuk met het vliegtuig, en dan nog met de boot....Maar ik heb van mijn luisterpieten gehoord, dat de kinderen in Singapore mijn verjaardag wel weer heel graag willen vieren! En dat jullie weer heel erg uitkijken naar mijn komst. Dat vind ik heel fijn om te horen! Daarom kom ik ook dit jaar weer gewoon naar Singapore toe. Op 19 november kom ik aan in de mooie jachthaven Marina@Keppelbay. Daarna is er weer een grote Sinterklaas show op de Hollandse Club. Het wordt weer een prachtig feest. Komen jullie allemaal kijken?

Ik moet het allemaal wel heel goed plannen, deze trip, want ik moet ook nog naar een paar andere landen.

Elke dag reis ik wel weer ergens naar toe! Er zijn natuurlijk overal in de wereld kinderen die Sinterklaas graag willen ontmoeten, en ook graag cadeautjes krijgen. Weten jullie al welke cadeautjes je graag zou willen krijgen?

Schrijf het maar in een mooie brief, of plak er plaatjes van op. Die brief kun je dan naar de Sint toesturen, of in je schoen doen die je straks kan zetten! Er staat een speciale Sinterklaasbrievenbus op de Hollandse Club. Als je er gewoon ‘voor Sinterklaas’ op schrijft, dan komt hij zeker bij mij! En dan weet ik precies welke cadeautjes er bij jullie thuis gebracht moeten worden door mijn goede Zwarte Pieten. Wel eerst even aan je papa of mama laten zien!

Wisten jullie trouwens dat Sinterklaas dit jaar op de Hollandse Club kan logeren? Ik heb gehoord dat er mooie hotelkamers zijn gemaakt. Zou dat speciaal voor mij zijn? Ik denk dat ik daar wel een nachtje gebruik van ga maken. Ik zal eens vragen of mijn mooie paard in de kamer ernaast kan. Natuurlijk breng ik ook een bezoek aan de Hollandse School. Daar kijk ik ook weer erg naar uit. Ik vind het prachtig om al die blije kinderen weer te zien. En mijn Zwarte Pieten hebben dit jaar ook weer heerlijk snoepgoed klaarliggen. En chocoladeletters!

Lieve kinderen, ik ben blij dat jullie elk jaar weer Sinterklaas’ verjaardag vieren.

Schrijven jullie me terug? Nu moet ik echt weer verder mijn koffers inpakken.

The Tuesday Quilting Bee The Hollandse Club extends a warm welcome to the ANZA Quilting group from 10.30am to 3.00pm every Tuesday (usually in the Brabant room). These talented ladies are glad to have a new home, after meeting at members’ homes turned into quite a chore with such a big group. The group has kindly invited Hollandse Club members to join in. Whether you are sewing savvy or a needle novice this is a great way to meet people and get advice from the best, no matter what type of needlework you are doing. Their 20 or so members have extensive quilting and sewing experience. You know that these ladies know how to make a quilt that will last forever.

In Stitches Needlework is enjoying an amazing revival everywhere, perhaps because the recession is forcing everyone to get back to basics.

However, today’s sewing designs are no longer reminiscent of your granny’s curtains, with modern patterns and fabulous fabrics to inspire you. Marianne, one of the ANZA regulars, even dyes her own material to make her fabric artworks.

Once a year, the ladies create a beautiful quilt to auction off for charity. Last year’s quilt raised $1000 and the ladies have also pulled together to raise money for good causes such as Australian flood and New Zealand earthquake relief.

eZoo Music and Art Classes at the Hollandse Club For 8 years, the eZoo School of Music and Art has been one of the best places in Singapore for kids to go and get creative.

Elizabeth Teng is the founder and director of eZoo, which has several different locations around the island, including a popular center behind the Hollandse and GESS schools at 2 Swiss View.

Now, members and their guests can experience the eZoo magic right here at the Club. Elizabeth is really excited about the lessons here, the first at a Singaporean club. She says, “we don’t drill kids to be famous concert pianists or artists, but we do teach them to love the arts in a relaxing environment.” Elizabeth thinks it’s a shame when parents expect her lessons to be about achieving academically. She doesn’t want eZoo to be a classroom outside the classroom. “Often parents come to pick up their child after a lesson and the child doesn’t want to leave because they are in the middle of their creative process. We are all about fun.

When something is fun you can you play or paint from the heart.

Enjoying the arts is an achievement that will last your whole life,” she explains.

This philosophy is what made the Hollandse Club choose eZoo for the art and music classes for children and teens that have just started. At the moment, the lessons are new so the classes can not be divided into many different age groups. The more participants there are, the more classes there will be for different age groups. eZoo has been kind enough to offer 2 free trial lessons. Register at the Club reception. Just leave your telephone number and you will be called back by an eZoo instructor. Experience the lessons and find out what they are all about. The eZoo instructors will also be happy to answer any questions you might have.

If Music be the food of Love… eZoo offers several types of music lessons for young people of all ages. Young children can take part in the music and movement classes from as early as 4 years of age. 6 and 7 year olds will love the fun music and play class.

These classes provide that vital early exposure to music and awaken kids’ joy for listening and playing music.

You can start guitar and keyboard from seven years of age. There are lessons for kids and teens, with more differentiation in age

groups as more students join. eZoo lessons never have more than 6 students per class. Guitar is on Wednesdays. Of course, you will need a guitar, but that is not a problem as they start at about $50, depending on the size you need. eZoo provides instruments of all kinds at very reasonable prices. Their portable keyboards also start at around $50 and are very easy to carry to and from lessons.

Keyboard lessons are on Tuesdays.

It is important to register for the trial lessons, since eZoo has to provide temporary instruments to try out and a class should not be bigger than 6 children. eZoo holds several music concerts to showcase their artists’ talents each year. Elizabeth is extremely proud of all the student’s when they stand up and show what they have learnt, no matter what their level.

Heart for Art The eZoo art classes have already started and the children who are taking part are very enthusiastic. Barbara, the art instructor from eZoo, encourages the kids to use their creativity to develop their own style during the lessons. Barbara was trained as an artist in her native Czech Republic, a nation well known for its lovely arts and crafts traditions. She encourages kids to try different techniques and skills. Students who take part and progress through the classes can use the special eZoo art kits for kids, that contain materials such as oil paints, watercolours and brushes. eZoo teaches skills that reach further than just the art or music classroom. Music performances teach kids that they are part of a group process, like being a productive member of a band. Art and Music lessons build confidence and teach kids about sticking to a long term goal. Hopefully, eZoo lessons will continue to teach these important life skills to members, who are also having fun, at the Hollandse Club for a long time to come.

Long Service Award

Simon Pho, Raymond Heng and Stella Lourdes were all presented with the Long Service Award this year. Both Simon from the Pool Bar and Sous Chef Raymond from the Sub-Kitchen reached the 5 years service milestone, while Stella from Housekeeping reached her 20 years service milestone. In recognition and appreciation of their dedication to the Club, they received the Long Service Award Certificate and cash reward. Staff are presented with $500 for reaching the 5 years milestone and $800 for the 20 years milestone. MEMBERSHIP UPDATE Dear Members With 2 months to go until the end of the year, you can already feel the festive season just around the corner. While many will be traveling over the holidays, members who are staying in Singapore in December can look forward to a spectacular event filled month here at the Club. Among the many events on our calendar, look out for our annual ‘Sinterklaas’ celebrations, undoubtedly the biggest Dutch traditional kids’ event of the year. Of course, our ‘International Rotation Months’ are rolling along successfully with Belgium and Spain in focus in November and December respectively. MEMBERS IN FOCUS Funky Fair Trade Marijke Bohm & Maaike Vaandrager

Shoppers at the Hollandse Club September Fair on 23rd September were wowed by the colourful bags, baskets, flags, toys and cushions two HC members, Marijke Bohm and Maaike Vaandrager, were selling. Imagine everyone’s surprise that a single cushion is made from about 900 recycled plastic bags and one of their stylish handbags recycles over 500 bags that would otherwise be dumped in landfills or clog rivers and drains. Marijke and Maaikes’ Funky Fair Trade products are not only fun, functional and stylish, but buying them means you are helping the environment and workers in some of the poorest communities in Cambodia.

The ladies set up their charitable organization because they want to support social projects in the region that focus on vulnerable people. Their aim is to open the wealthy bubble of the Singapore consumer market for the great products these worthy organizations make.

After a trip to see how their suppliers work and support locals with a decent wage there, Maaike and Marijke were motivated to bring this recycled rubbish with a new lease of life to Singapore.

From Junky to Funky Marijke and Maaike visited a small village in the South of Cambodia which was one of the final strongholds of the Khmer Rouge army and only became peaceful in 1998. Since then, people are focused on improving their standard of living. The legacy of war is still apparent, with many people suffering from PTSD, alcoholism and domestic violence. Many parents are not aware of the value of education and this area has some of the worst national exam results in the country. A group of 24 of the poorest of the poor, because they lack land, livestock and food security, were chosen for training. Thanks to this project these artisans now generate vital income for their families, allowing them to send their children and siblings to school rather then keeping them at home to work in the fields. The group also has the opportunity to learn English at the vocational training centre and be involved in savings schemes and other group activities.

Not turning a Blind Eye The ladies’ interest in supporting developing world communities stems from their own interesting backgrounds. Marijke has lived in several, very different countries (like Norway, Egypt, Iran) and uses her legal background to fight for the rights of refugees and asylum seekers.

In Singapore, she works for HOME at their helpdesk for domestic workers, doing fundraising and on research/advocacy projects. She explains that, ‘for Expats Singapore is a wonderful place to live, but for migrant workers from the surrounding countries life in Singapore is tough and sometimes extremely unfair.’

Maaike spent her childhood in several developing countries, like Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Cameroon. Now she is traveling to popular holiday destinations in Asia with her own 3 children, she refuses to ignore the plight of those living in poverty outside of the gates of her resort.

After having worked at the Dutch Development Bank FMO, she believes everyone can use their, “experience and background to influence the lives of individuals with small initiatives that make families or individuals financially independent. Funky Fairtrade contributes to that vision.”

Plastic (not so) Fantastic The plastic bag is simultaneously the best and worst product in Asia. Western countries have seen a backlash against them and some African countries have even banned this blight on the landscape. Asia’s obsession with the plastic bag seems to have no bounds; not really surprising as they are ideal for this climate. However, with plastic bags fouling up the most naturally beautiful places, there must be more awareness of this problem. Funky Fair Trade aims to raise Asians awareness while literally cleaning up the mess and using the washed and recycled bags to craft something that will be used and loved for far longer than a bag from the store.

For mor information check out the website at www.funkyfairtrade.info Funky Fairtrade also supports the organisation HOME by selling cotton party flags made by women staying in the HOME shelter. HOME provides direct assistance to migrant workers and victims of human trafficking or forced labour in Singapore. It advocates for better legal protection of their human rights.

HOME strives to help, amongst others, domestic workers, who number about 200.000 in Singapore. HOME shelters are a refuge for some domestic workers who have been abused or whose rights have been violated by their employers.

It is a safe house while their cases are being investigated by the police or the MOM. Many domestic workers are repatriated to their home countries after long periods without any money for their families. HOME organises workshops and skills trainings for these women. After attending a sewing workshop some women now make party flags.

If I have to pick one game from the rest, my recommendation would be LittleBIGPlanet. It is nonviolent, has humorous toy-like graphics and its creative gameplay is good for multiplayer team building.

Unfortunately, this game is only playable on the Playstaion 3 console not the Playstation 2.

It would be great if you learn the Dutch language. Although the Club has a few events which will be presented in Dutch, as an International Club it is not compulsory as a majority of the events, classes, notices and advertisements are in English. To be honest, not all the members and staff understands Dutch too.

LittleBIGPlanet has received wide critical acclaim from game reviewers, and won awards for various categories.

If you have a Playstation 3 at home, I would recommend the purchase of a copy.

Elena ter Haar-Battistuzzi has that collector’s eye. Perhaps she developed it during summers at her family’s Italian house or perhaps it was her art history training at Groningen University in Holland. Her love of collecting objet d’art started in South America and this is what makes her house so unique in Singapore. Many expats collect Asian art, but the balance between her Latin treasures and some gems bought during the family’s years in Shanghai is very harmonious. “I am a visual person. If something looks good I feel good. I look for objects with a soul. My house is full of things that have a history. They say something about where they come from or when I found them. Surrounding the family with memories makes us feel at home,” Elena explains.

Black, White and Blue Having just arrived in Singapore this summer, Elena is amazed how different her possessions look in their new environment, a Black and White house in Medway Park. Some walls were already painted blue, but Elena loved the contrast with her treasures and didn’t repaint them. “The blue is very cooling in the heat and it looks great with my turquoise things”, she explains. She has lovely paintings that come to life against the blue, including a work by her husband and another by her father-in-law. A stroke of luck meant that the she never had to trudge around with the real estate agent looking for a place to live like all newly arrived expat women do. Within the company somebody moved on and the Ter Haars were happy to take over the rental contract.

The house, built in the 1950s, is located in a quiet, green and leafy former British military residential area near Dover road. The British army officers left the area in 1963 and since then it’s been a beloved neighbourhood for expats. Elena never even saw the house before making the decision to take it based on some photos taken by her husband. The family was also lucky that the house was liveable. Many of the other homes in the area must be stripped, with even swimming pools coming out and going back in between owners. She says that, “everyone who lives in this house improves something about it.

We repaired the deck around the pool and put in some new plants, turning the area into a nice outside entertaining area.”

Latin Loves Elena’s South American artefacts were lovingly collected during the years she lived in Peru, Nicaragua, Mexico and El Salvador from 1996 to 2009, with a break of six years in between where she lived in Holland and became the mother of two lovely children. Her shady terrace is adorned with naïve statues, gorgeous Guatemalan masks and a Peruvian Nazca line vase.

In South America in the weekends, Ian and Elena would pack a pick-nick and drive to discover new places. On one journey in El Salvador, the couple stopped in the middle of nowhere at a road side store that sold stone statues. Across the road was a dusty, old ‘Anticuario’, which was so decrepit that even the owner only had 3 teeth left.

He explained that some of the beautiful, antique European furniture came from a colonial hacienda that had partly burnt down in the neighbourhood. They bought a heavy old dining table and cupboard which had both been damaged in the fire, but were still obviously worth saving. Elena usually has a restoration project going and she helped to scrape the damaged layer off the heavy old table.

Buried Treasure In China and South America, she enjoyed searching for a great deal in places where you would least expect it. She bought two wooden antique statues of monks with a lot of character in a muddy little village in Yunnan province. These two statues come from Baisha, a village where the family met a famous local doctor, Dr Ho. Their travel guide said you could always ring his bell. Elena tells how they, “spent an amazing hour and a half with the 85 years old Chinese herbalist and physician. Ian came away with all kinds of powders to take. The statues always remind me of that experience. I love it when my life crosses the lives of these special people. That is the reason to leave friends and family behind and live in the big, wide world.”

Elena usually has a project going, like clearing off years of muck from the fabulous Buddha head in her living room. “I found this Buddha head in a wonderfully disgusting back alley store in Shanghai. We tried to touch as little as possible because everything was covered in dirt and dust, but we knew we had entered a real treasure trove. We sifted through mounds of rubbish, and then there it was. I loved it straight away, but acted indifferent while trying to get the price down.”

Elena laments that many things in Singapore seem so ready-to-use, with sky-high prices to match. She says that she loves to stroll around with a mission to find objects that touch her soul and that still need a finishing touch. “I haven’t found great places for those kinds of deals in Singapore yet, but I hope I will,” she says. Suggestions are welcome.

Belgian CartoonS Many people don’t know that a couple of their favourite cartoon characters are as Belgian as French Fries (didn’t know that they were Belgian either- oops!) Here are some of our favourite Belgian fictional characters…

The Smurfs

Tintin

Who doesn’t love those cute blue faces? Half Belgian, half British cartoonist Pierre Culliford or Peyo created this mini blue icon in 1958.

Peyo adopted this pen name when his British cousins couldn’t pronounce Pierre. He applied for two jobs after leaving school: illustrator or dental assistant. Luckily for fans, he got the first.

The classic comic books were written much longer ago than these timeless tales let on. Belgian artist Georges Rémi, also under the nom de plume Hergé, wrote and illustrated the first Tintin story in 1929. The 24 comic books he produced have sold over 350 million copies in over 80 languages. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Tintin, the hero is a young, boyish reporter who travels around the world solving crimes and mysteries with his dog Snowy. With his fondness for whiskey and his fear of spiders, Snowy often shows his sharp wit when we are able to read his thoughts. Other favourite characters include grumpy Captain Haddock and the intelligent, but deaf Professor Calculus.

The first smurf was only a one time secondary characters in another story he wrote. The Smurfs quickly got their own cartoon and then TV show, with Peyo’s life-long writing partner Yvan Delporte creating the stories for his illustrations. There was no looking back. The Smurf phenomenon is truly global, with chart topping success in every form of multimedia from books to films to computer games. How much of that success has to do with the little tune everyone can hum no matter what age or nationality you are? Love it or hate it, the Smurf song, written by Dutchman Vader Abraham in the 1970s, has contributed to Smurf world domination, and still features in the 2011 3D Smurf movie.

Since the 1960s, merchandising of the many Smurf characters has exploded, with German Schleich Smurf figurines their best sellers since the 1970s. No matter who your most beloved Smurf is, Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Brainy, Vanity, Lazy, Jokey and the rest are here to stay.

The drawings and storylines have universal appeal, largely because of their clarity and humour. The range of humour extends from pure slapstick to deeper political and social satire in the later books.

Now mega-directors Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson have produced the largest Tintin project to date, ‘The Adventures of Tintin’ movie, a sure-fire Christmas blockbuster. The movie is based on the 1943 cartoon ‘The Secret of the Unicorn’ and is out on 10 November in Singapore.

The Tintin website (tintin.com) has a wonderful array of Tintin facts, film information, a test-your-knowledge quiz, an interactive movie game, the Tintin blog, and the Tintinologist’s corner with loads of Tintin facts.

Elephant Parade Singapore 2011 After tremendous media and public success in cities such as Amsterdam, London, Copenhagen and Milan, the decorated elephant sculptures that support their flesh and blood counterparts are on their way to their natural habitat; Asia. 11/11/11 is the start date for Asia’s first Elephant Parade. From this day the elephant sculptures will be on display along Orchard Road, Marina Bay, the Singapore Botanic Gardens, Raffles Place Park, VivoCity and the Singapore Zoo for two months.

Supporting their Asian Counterparts The Asian elephant is an endangered species, with their numbers having declined 90% in the last 100 years. The mighty Asian elephant, which could once be found between Syria and China, may be extinct within 30 years at the current rates of decline. Elephant Parade works to raise awareness for the fate of the Asian elephant and funds for The Asian Elephant Foundation. This Dutch foundation raises money with Elephant Parade auctions and retail revenues. Grants from this foundation are used to restore vital elephant land corridors, to support elephant hospitals in Asian countries and for other significant causes. Although Elephant Parade is not a charity, it aims to be the greatest contributor to Asian elephant conservation programs. It’s hard to decide which are cuter, the wild version or the Parade’s decorated elephants. All the artworks are show stoppers. Singapore’s biggest ever open-air international art exhibition will include 160 life-sized baby elephants. The sculptures, made of fiberglass, are painted and decorated by local, international, established or upcoming artists, designers and celebrities. With contributions from Paul Smith, Rupert Grint, John van Hamersveld and Leona Lewis, these art objects are sure to wow Singapore. Dutch artist in Singapore Francis Alleblas has also designed one of the elephants for the show.

A Great Art Investment Once audiences have had a chance to enjoy them, the elephants will be auctioned to museums, art collectors and private admirers by Sotheby’s during a Grand Gala Auction in January 2012. Part of the proceeds will go to The Asian Elephant Foundation and Singapore Wildlife Reserves Conservation Fund. Previous editions of Elephant Parade raised close to S$7 million at auction for the benefit of Asian elephant related projects and organisations. Auction houses are highlighting Elephant Parade’s art sculptures as potentially great art investments for the future.

Hollandse Club member Kim van der Heeden is one of the five team members organizing Elephant Parade Singapore. She was kind enough to answer some questions about this remarkable event.

How did you get involved with Elephant Parade and what attracted you to the project?

I got involved via Marieke de Zeeuw, Project Manager for Elephant Parade Singapore, in August 2010. At that time it was just Marieke and Mike Spits, co-founder of Elephant Parade and managing director of the local Elephant Parade company.

When the decision was made that Elephant Parade Singapore was feasible, I offered my legal expertise for the project. Because we are such a small team aside of legal and regulatory matters I take care of some additional paperwork like sourcing insurance for the company.

The unique concept of Elephant Parade, with its combination of art, business and charity, and Marieke, Marc and Mike, the father and son behind the company, made me decide to join Elephant Parade. It turned out to be the right decision although I never thought I’d be working more hours here than I did when still living in Holland. That can be challenging with a young family and a husband rushing off to work as well.

How will the Singapore Elephant Parade differ from those before?

Each Elephant Parade sculpture is an original piece of art.

In Singapore, I believe we have more artists than celebrities participating compared to previous editions. Also, the route to view all the art elephants will be difficult to cover by foot due to the distance between some of the locations, as well as the tropical climate. Fortunately, you can see all the 160 elephant sculptures together in one location, most probably Singapore Botanic Gardens, during the viewing days from 8 to 11 January 2012.

Which Elephant is your favourite and why?

I find this difficult to answer because there are so many impressive designs; some funny or catchy others simply artistically beautiful.

There is one elephant that’s bound to catch a lot of attention because a 3,37 carat diamond is used in its decoration.

What will happen after the auction in January 2012?

After the sale of the elephant sculptures, Elephant Parade Singapore will come to an end. Of course, directors Marc & Mike Spits are working hard to secure new cities & opportunities for a colorful exhibition of art elephants.

Andy Cunningham’s Caricature exhibition in Tradewinds Bar

Can you describe which celebrity you enjoyed meeting and drawing the most and why?

Princess Diana was my favorite although probably my most frightening experience. She was very young and newly married. Everyone wanted to be near her. She was so kind and very natural, beautiful. She had her bodyguard ask me to caricature her and she tried everything to make me feel at ease. It was a proud moment when later at the charity ball, I saw her leave, clutching her caricature in her hand.

Which celebrity portraits have been the most and least successful and why?

The Hollandse Club Main Committee members and staff never looked quite so good (or so funny, in some cases) as in British artist and cartoonist Andy Cunningham’s caricatures, exhibited in the Tradewinds bar for all to enjoy (and have more than a little snigger at). There’s no need to read the name plates, as Andy’s included all the quirky character traits of her victims… I mean, subjects, making it perfectly obvious who she’s drawn. Even our very own General Manager has finally caught the dreaded HC towel thief in his portrait.

Andy is a well-renowned British artist, who has been in Singapore since 2009. Back in the UK, she has drawn the likes of Pavarotti, British Prime Ministers such as Major, Blair and Brown and other celebrities and royals galore. She has really enjoyed her 2 years in Singapore. “The minute we arrived I knew I would love it here. The work is coming in very fast now and I have never been busier. My clients in Singapore range from corporate seminars i.e. ING Bank, Coutts and JLL, to private leaving parties and charity events,” she says. She did a one year portraiture apprentership ending in a successful show. Time for some questions for our featured artist.

Pavarotti. It was my most challenging on-the-spot caricature at a private party. There were 50 or so celebrities all crammed into an intimate room in an exclusive hotel in London. I could hardly move my arms to draw the caricature. Cameras were flashing as the paparazzi realized Pavarotti was being caricatured. It wasn’t my most successful picture, but I did enjoy holding onto the picture for a few seconds during a little tug of war with the great Pavarotti as he tried to take it out of my hand!

How does your artistic process work when you meet someone for a portrait? How do you make sure you really capture their personality?

When you are working live the artistic process has to come naturally, from your subconscious. But I am glad to say it’s easy to teach and anyone can do it. Your first may not be a Michelangelo, but it will be a Picasso. Remember there are no rules in art. Just have fun. I like to talk to my sitter and this gives me the opportunity to see how their face moves and most importantly I learn who they are. My husband jokes that because I am a woman I can always talk and talk and talk, while drawing at the same time. People fascinate me. We are all so wonderfully different. Our faces give so much away and at the same time an expression can hide everything about you. I get a lot of satisfaction from persuading a serious or insecure face, into a smiling face. A smile is “the plot” that makes up a brilliant story.

Can you explain some of your ideas when you were drawing the staff and committee of the Club?

I love going to the Hollnadse Club and chilling out. The staff and committee members make it all possible for me, my family and friends to have somewhere to relax and have fun. I also have time to learn about how the club “breathes”, and I can observe any changes, particularly the funny ones that stand out. The personalities and what goes on in the club capture my imagination. All I am doing is taking my many thoughts, modifying them, so that we can all see, on one page, in black and white, what makes the Hollandse Club special.

Are the highways safe in the Netherlands?

Remco Muzerie lived in Singapore for 9 years (2000 – 2009) together with his wife Margo and his children Isabelle (15 years) and Olivier (12 years). Reactions can be sent to remcomuzerie@yahoo.nl From the moment we came back to the Netherlands in 2009, we noticed something exciting in the air. There was a buzz; an unusual discussion. The maximum speed limit on our highways was going to change. That in itself is not very peculiar, but this time the speed limit was going to increase instead of going down. Holy cow, its a miracle! Suddenly we are allowed to drive 130 km (it was 120 km/hr) to Germany, where there is still no speed limit on the highways!

Of course, the question is whether this makes Dutch traffic more unsafe or does it not make any difference because other factors than the maximum speed are responsible for accidents, such as acts of God or deer who want to eat the grass on the other side. Please do not think this article will give you any answers or reasons for the mysteries which suddenly occurred on the highways in the Netherlands, and remember do not shoot the messenger! I think it all started with strange objects placed by people on the highway (the A7) at night. It started with objects like a dustbin, a television, and pieces of metal. This is extremely dangerous, of course, whether you are driving 120 km or 130 km/hour. This is no laughing matter at all.

A little later the objects became more Dutch, like a plastic goat, then a bike, and yes, a ceramic cow. Wham, the driver hit the cow at around midnight and was totally unharmed. That is a miracle. The police are still looking for the culprits but cannot find anybody. Then, just as publicity about the incidents began to die down, especially because of the news that this was the wettest summer in 100 years, the impossible happened. A mysterious highway shooter entered the stage. He (Dutch people are fairly certain a woman could not be responsible) or they lay in the forest or even more scarily sat in a car waiting. They would sneak up on you to shoot at your car while you are driving the maximum speed. Or more precisely, they shot at the window of your car, shattered the glass and drivers had no idea what had happened.

At 8 am on 29 August, the weather was unusual because it was NOT raining and some Dutch people would even call it a nice summer day. There was another shot and the glass of a side window of a random car hits the highway with a splash of glass diamonds. The police saw a silver grey coloured Volkswagen Golf speeding away. A helicopter search did not deliver any results. Do you have any idea how many silver grey Golf cars there are in the Netherlands? From now on you got strange looks if you drive a silver grey car. Are you the mysterious shooter? A good friend of mine took this opportunity to exchange his Golf for his dream car, with that famous red colour.

Most of you will know that Dutch people are a little direct (some call it rude) and have a strange sense of humour (some call that black) but it is definitely rather unique and you start to enjoy that part of the Dutch society enormously when you are back. We make silly jokes about almost everything and the above is of course no exception. The rumour is that they found the highway shooter, what a relief!

Spanish Tapas Little Bites of Heaven The Singapore culinary scene may be great for many types of cuisine. However, one European favourite that does suffer here because of price and availability is Spanish tapas. Our very own Lounge is probably the best value place to enjoy these traditional drinking snacks. With tapas available in just about every bar and bodega in Spain and at specialist restaurants all over the world, the joy of these drinking snacks, which can be combined into a full meal, is lost when prices sky rocket here. The problem is Spanish ingredients, with each dish standing or falling because of the authenticity and freshness of the olives, chorizo, cheese, vegetables, meat and fish used.

The origin of Tapas is disputed, with many Spanish regions claiming to be the birth place. With evening meal times starting as late as 11pm or 12am in Spain, these tasty life savers tide over hungry drinkers, who would otherwise fall over after a few drinks on an empty stomach. Many tales describe how tapas became the Spanish staple food. As early as the thirteenth century, a sickly King Alfonso X of Castile drank wine with little snacks until he recovered. Afterwards, he ordered that all drinking in town had to be done in combination with his snacks. Or perhaps it was innkeepers in La Mancha who tried to disguise the taste of bad wine with pungent cheeses and sausages.

The saltiness of the tapas also promotes drinking as the salt stimulates thirst.

Practical as well as Delicious Tapa means lid in Spanish. Many tapas are little breads or meats that were used to cover drinks to stop flies sipping at the sweet Sherries of Southern Spain. The practicality of tapas is obvious when standing at a Spanish bar (always cheaper than sitting) and balancing these little bite size pieces on you glass. Nowadays, the term tapas covers anything from peasant bites to high end culinary creations. Give the Lounge tapas a try or give these simple recipes a whirl. Serve these recipes with these easy tapas in little dishes; olives, bread, calamares (octopus rings), Albondigas (meatballs in tomato sauce), blocks of Manchego cheese and slices of chorizo for an authentic tapas evening.

Saffron Aïoli

The original smooth, creamy garlic sauce to use with bread, meats and fish.

• 2 whole heads garlic • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice • 3/4 cup canola oil • 1 teaspoon salt

• 3 large egg yolks • 1 tablespoon saffron threads • 8 garlic cloves, minced • 3/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

Preparation Aïoli: 1. Preheat oven to 220°C. 2. Wrap each garlic head in foil and roast until soft, about 1 hour. Unwrap and let cool. Peel cloves and set aside.

3. In medium bowl, whisk together egg yolks and lemon. Set aside.

4. Place 2 tablespoons hot water in small bowl. In small, dry frying pan over moderate heat, toast saffron for 30 seconds. Stir into hot water, then fold saffron water into egg mixture.

5. In a blender, combine 4 tablespoons canola oil, raw garlic, roasted garlic, and salt. Blend on high speed until creamy, about 2 minutes. Add egg mixture and blend 1 more minute. With motor running, very slowly add olive oil and remaining canola oil in steady stream, and continue blending until thick, about 2 minutes. Eat with bread or the tortilla.

Empanadas Tortilla Española • 2 small boiling potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces • 1/4 medium onion, finely chopped • 1 large garlic clove, minced • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten Preparation Aïoli: 1. Preheat oven to 200°F 2. In medium pot, combine potatoes and enough water to cover. Bring to boil, lower heat to moderately low, and cook, covered, until potatoes can be pierced with fork, about 5 minutes. Drain and set aside to cool.

3. In small sauté pan, over moderate heat, sauté onions and garlic in vegetable oil until soft, about 5 minutes.

4. In medium bowl, combine eggs, potatoes, onions, and garlic. Heat 10inch nonstick skillet over medium heat and add egg mixture. Cook 4 minutes, then invert tortilla into ovenproof nonstick pan. Cover and bake until just set, about 10 minutes. Serve with saffron aïoli.

These large or small turnovers are filled with meats and vegetables.

Traditionally eaten as street food, empanadas are ideal for snacking on the go.

• 1/2 medium onion, finely chopped • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano • 3/4 pound ground beef chuck • 2 tablespoons raisins • 1 package frozen puff pastry, thawed • About 4 cups vegetable oil • 1 1/2 tablespoons chopped pimiento-stuffed olives • 1 (14-ounce) can whole tomatoes in juice, drained, reserving 2 tablespoons juice, and chopped Preparation Empanadas: 1. Cook the onion in olive oil in a heavy medium skillet over medium heat, stirring frequently, until softened. Add garlic, cumin, and oregano and cook, stirring 1 minute. Stir in beef and cook, breaking up lumps with a fork, until no longer pink, about 4 minutes.

2. Add raisins, olives, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon pepper, and tomatoes with reserved juice, then cook, stirring occasionally, until liquid is reduced but mixture is still moist, about 5 minutes. Spread on a plate to cool.

3. Preheat oven to 100°C with rack in middle.

4. Lay a large sheet of plastic wrap on a dampened work surface (to help keep plastic in place), then cut out an empanada disk on plastic wrap to measure about 6 inches. Place 3 tablespoons meat mixture on disk. Moisten edges of disk with water and fold over to form a semicircle, then crimp with a fork. Make more empanadas in same manner.

5. Heat 3/4 inch vegetable oil in a deep 12-inch skillet over medium heat. Fry empanadas, 2 or 3 at a time, turning once, until crisp and golden, 4 to 6 minutes per batch.

6. Transfer to a shallow baking pan and keep warm in oven. Return oil to high heat in between batches.

ARCHERY CLINIC On a windy Saturday afternoon, a small but focused group of kids were in field in Punggol. All held bows and arrows in their hands, focusing on a target set in the field before them, before letting the arrows loose with a loud ‘twang’! Smiles broke out all round when the arrows found their targets! What was going on?

It was the Archery clinic, where kids had an opportunity to learn and try out what they had only seen in television and movies. They could pretend they were Robin Hood, if only for a day! They learned the basics of handling archery equipment and safety and were taught basic shooting skills before moving on to practice and a mini tournament.

Before long, they were so good at it that they challenged one of the instructors to a shoot out! All in all, it was great fun for all involved and some even expressed interest in taking up a regular class! Look out for it as an Archery class is in the works at the moment!

SCUBA KIDS TRYOUT Scuba diving exposes you to a new wondrous world, a unique aquatic environment so very different from the dry land that we live on.

TENNIS TENNIS What’s on Singapore Women’s Tennis Exhibition: 16 December 2011 - 18 December 2011 World-class Tennis is back in Singapore with 6 of the world’s best WTA players coming to play a 3 day exhibition tournament in December.

Samantha Stosur from Australia (currently ranked 7th) will be there, as well as Agnieszka Radwanska from Poland (ranked 13th), Peng Shuai from China (ranked 15th) and Svetlana Kuznetsova from Russia (ranked 19th). See you in December at Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Friday Junior Tennis Social: 5pm - 7pm - Play and have Fun - Walk-in Friday is the time and place to always find somebody to hit a ball with.

- Find more tennis mates to play with in the future.

- Learn about the game, techniques, physics, fitness, balance, posture, breathing, mental strength, competition and social skills and how to fight (overcome your demons) :) - So get more confidence/balance/techniques/consistency/endurance/power - And if you do not already, learn to LOVE TENNIS :) There are 2 courts to start with. Two groups will be formed, with the first group consisting of players who are growing to competition level and the second with competition level players. The groups will be shuffled once in a while, so players from both groups get the benefits of playing with players of different levels. This is a great way to learn. More advanced players can teach others and challenge themselves when trying to handle all kinds of balls. The starters can test themselves and learn. This mixes it up and adds to the enjoyment for everyone!

If you are 8 and above, able to serve and volley, then come and play!

TENNIS SOCIALS Dear tennis enthusiasts, Please note that everyone is welcome to use Courts 1 and 2 during the Mixed Socials on Wednesday from 7-9pm and Sunday from 4-7pm.

There is no need to sign in or to give any notice; just come down and play! It is also expected that players make sure amongst themselves that everyone gets to play a more or less equal number of games. When people are waiting to play, kindly limit a set to a maximum of 8 games. For more enjoyment, it is also recommended that players of similar levels mix: too large a difference in level is usually no fun for both parties. Any suggestions for improvement are welcome!

The Tennis Committee Marianne Doele has been running on and around the HC tennis courts for years. She is looking forward to organizing events for every one to join and to make the tennis community an even more active (and maybe a bit more competitive) one.

Patrice Plet (M) arrived in Singapore this January (2011). He is married to Conny, who works for Unilever. Patrice has his own small Internet company and works from home. Being able to plan his own working times means he can be found on the tennis courts regularly. He joined the Tennis Committee because he was tricked by the nice TC girls during their hunt for a real man.

‘Boom Boom’ Babs Drenth has been a member of the Hollandse Club since 2002 and is a very active tennis player. You can find Babs on one of the courts 3 times a week, as she loves the game and the social contact with all the players. Beware of her powerful serve and topspin.

Young-Min ‘Steady’ Bouman is addicted to the game and steady is her middle name! The signature look is black. After a year of enjoying lots of social tennis, this season it’s time for the breakthrough in to the competitive scene.

There is a very good chance of spotting her on the tennis courts as the whole family loves the game.

Coaches’ Corner What makes tennis enjoyable? And why do we need a coach?

A good tennis coach often asks more questions than gives answers or tips. If your game improves they often ask, “So what were you thinking or trying “. As a coach they encourage you to try different shots and bring out your best game – tweak your core shots to increase consistency, power, spin. They helping you gain more control and confidence. As a teacher they increase your tennis knowledge and lead you through court etiquette, awareness, tactics and strategies… But ultimately a coach’s main responsibility is to make tennis fun?!

Yes, tennis should be fun!!! Ok, we may play tennis for the fitness, social and competitive elements but ultimately we enjoy tennis and play our best when we are having fun. Let’s consider when we first started playing tennis – Remember when you initially learned tennis, maybe as a child or even as an adult? You would simply go to the court to play tennis. We wouldn’t go to study tennis. You wouldn’t go thinking tennis is serious or work. We would run onto the court trying our best to make that wonderful contact between ball and racquet and feel the enjoyment of watching the ball fly sweetly away; hopefully over the net and into the court. Maybe too quickly we learn the rules and how to score but still we search for that ultimate tennis playing experience. Tennis is simply a game we enjoy playing; like when we play in the pool, or we play on the field or the games we play at home without too many rules or conditions. In the 1980s just when it seemed tennis coaching was a very serious business and biomechanics and stroke analysis were the answers to revolutionizing everyone’s lack of improvement, a “new fun based approach” quietly started. Al Secunda, a gifted artist and radical tennis coach, decided that he would coach from “The Fun Principle – focusing on controlling both hands through the swings and contacts of all the shots”. Al Secunda’s success with his students encouraged him to write a tennis book Ultimate Tennis. In this coach’s humble opinion, this book is still the best tennis instruction guide ever printed. The fact that it has been revised and reprinted so many times and has such enthusiastic reviews suggests it is a classic.

Al’s Secunda’s book Ultimate Tennis challenges students and coaches to improve and enjoy their tennis game following his `pleasure and precision’ principles. The books excellent use of witty diagrams and photos helps you understand and visualize the complicated processes more easily. It makes learning and teaching tennis fun again. Throughout the book there is the theme of `where the fun begins’ and it flows from the way Al describes the mystery of tennis. In his own unique way, Al Secunda makes common sense of complicated tennis biomechanics and elaborate mental imagery. In particular, I find Al’s description of the palm on the forehand and pinky knuckle on the one handed backhand, as essential focal points for smooth stroking, lightening bolt tennis tips. In summary, to increase control and consistency when hitting a forehand -- try visualizing hitting a ball at the point of your forehand palm at the base of your index finger. For the one handed backhand, focus on the pinky knuckle of your hitting hand. By keeping these points smooth through contact you will increase your contact pleasure and ultimately your consistency and control.

So as you go out to play tennis, don’t forget to pause and reflect on if you are going to play or going to work on tennis. Ask yourself “Am I having fun”? Can I focus on simple pleasures in contact rather than on scores. If you can accept that tennis should be playtime and make the fun and focus principle the priority you are taking the first big step to being a better player. By relaxing on court and enjoying a few simple challenges on your game with a coach, you will improve. Your shots will become more consistent and you can start feeling more confident about handling difficult shots, pressure situations and distractions. With a game based approach children learn the fun is in playing. As adults we need to remember don’t get too caught up with score outcomes.

So come and have a hit with the coaches and have some fun in trying to improve your game. If you can pick up a copy of Al Secunda’s Ultimate Tennis. You could also check out Al’s latest book www.the15secondprinciple.com Most of all try and remember your best tennis will ultimately come from the fun and focus principle.

SWIMMING Christmas Holidays Please note there that will be no swimming lessons from Friday, 23 December 2010 up until 2 January 2011. Lessons will resume as normal on Tuesday, 3 January 2011.

Kindly take note that our swimming program has reached its full capacity. If you sign out, do take note there might not be space to re-enter into the program. If you still wish to sign out please take note there is a one month cancellation notice and upon signing in you will be charged the usual registration fee.

4 day swimming event We had 108 swimmers who signed up for the 4 day swimming event. On Monday, 3 October 2011 at 5pm we started off with over 80 swimmers in the pool. It was such a lovely sight. Swimming is so fun!!

The weather was great until there was lighting on Thursday and Friday evening.

Nobody gave up and all the swimmers managed to complete their FULL DISTANCE by the next Monday. Well done to all the swimmers! It was amazing fun, great swimming and lovely family bonding. We had 41 swimmers who swam 10 laps per evening, 42 swimmers who swam 25 laps per evening, 16 swimmers who swam 50 laps per evening and 6 swimmers who swam 100 laps per evening. The total distance covered this year came up to 8260km. Good job guys.

Sports & Recreation Neptune League 2011

This year, rounds 4 and 5 of the Swimming Neptune League were very close together in the months of September and October.

Round 4 of the Neptune League swimming competition was held at the Singapore American School in Woodlands. The parents enjoyed a great view from the stadium seats! Well done to all the swimmers. Thank you for all coming early and swimming the best you can. We managed to gain 11 golden medals, 13 silver and 23 bronze medals. We were literally swimming in medals.

Round 5 took place on 2 October at the HOLLANDSE CLUB, our HOME GROUND. Thank you to everybody involved in this exciting set up and thank you to the volunteers for helping. Without you we would not able to run such a smooth meet. Thank God for the nice weather. This round we managed to gain 14 gold medals, 14 silver medals and 23 bronze medals.

Well done swimmers!! Come to the training hours as often as you can!

SQUASH Goodbye 2011, hello 2012

Perhaps we should review the past year and tell you of our many success and glories on the court and how we have developed as compassionate and loving human being.

But that would be boasting, so let us put that to one side and look forward to what you can expect from us in 2012.

League National Squash League It is our aim to have teams playing in Grades B to F in the NSL – which translates to squash for all levels of ability and confidence.

We have an inclusive style and we encourage players to participate in team, practice and competitions.

You will be welcome and included in a happy, smiley group of players.

The NSL starts late January and ends in May – plenty of matches for you to play.

COSMO Played between country clubs in Singapore – unfortunately, only 1 team per club is allowed and 5 players on any one night – so to compensate we run in tandem the internal league so everyone get to play 1 competitive match per week.

Ladies We started with 2 and now we have 6 ladies committed to squash.

The standard is novice to good and they have their own group and also join in with the men. We are highly confident that they will play league next year and we look forward to the Hollandse Club finally fielding a ladies team.

Eddy (aka Yoda) does a marvelous job every Wednesday in getting the ladies to hone their skills and improve and they are very quick.

Socials

As ever, this is the heart of the squash section and the amber nectar flows freely after every session, as does the conversation and the feeling of togetherness.

As a section, we base our development around après squash and the friendships we make. Here we carry into other areas of our life and dare I say it for life itself!!!

Juniors In 2012, we will have a Junior Development Academy – yes dear members your children will be able to take advantage of the marvelous dedicated recourses we will have set up.

We will introduce Junior League and competition for the kids and there will be structured coaching to encourage development of their skill sets.

Squash is an individual sport and gladiatorial at that. However, in a team Junior’s get the camaraderie of team sports and the valuable life lessons of individual sport. So parents this is the sport for your kids and remember to keep an eye on the notice board for announcements coming into 2012.
