EDITOR’S MESSAGE

As you can see, our Club President and General Manager have moved on to new adventures. We wish them and their families the best for the future, and thank Nienke and Daniel for all the great work they have done for the Hollandse Club. I, too, have left the shores of Singapore for the holidays, and am writing to you from sunny Phuket; actually, the weather here is not so different from home. That is one of the great things about living in Singapore - you can hop on a plane, ferry or bus and be at an exotic destination in a short space of time for a day or a week or longer, without suffering from jet lag.

2015 was an eventful year, what with Singapore’s 50th birthday celebrations and the opening of the renovated Terrace, tinged with the passing of LKY. Do read the Sports and Events reports to find out what exciting things have been happening at the Club and what medals and tournaments our talented Members have been winning, across all sports and ages. Oliver, our special reporter, lets us in on the excitement of Sinterklaas’s arrival. If you have any stories for us, please send them in to editor@hollandseclub.org. sg. Now we look forward to the events of 2016 and hope they are all happy ones.

The New Year is a time we use to mark new beginnings and resolutions; whether it is a new country, a new place to

discover in Singapore (Claire was worried that a renovated museum wasn’t far enough ‘Off the Beaten Track’, but I’ve never been to the ACM, for all my years in Singapore) or resolving to become a ‘new you’ by eating more healthily (but, Karien ensures, no less deliciously), doing more exercise or starting your own business (as Inge, the Magazine’s own photographer, has done). I’m resolving - yet again - to follow my own advice to start exercising and be more conscious of what I eat so I can fit into my jeans again after the festive holiday season. Maybe this year, you’ll convince your kids to eat more vegetables; maybe this year, I’ll convince my husband!

Enjoy our Magazine. Whatever you do and wherever you are, I wish all our readers the best for a wonderful 2016!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Fellow Members, You have all been informed about the Club’s financial situation and the way forward for the short term. I would like to thank all members who attended the EGM and all those who shared their opinions, suggestions and ideas for the Club. It really means a lot when members show their involvement and offer their help.

During the past few weeks, the Main Committee has put together various work groups consisting of members to assist us with specific topics such as Real Estate, Loans and Business Strategy. If you would like to contribute with your expertise in any related field, please contact the Main Committee. In recent months, the Main Committee members have committed a huge amount of time and effort to our Club’s current situation. For some of us, this has been on a full-time basis and we cannot do it alone.

At the EGM on the 14th December, we presented several directions for the future of the Club. Please bear in mind that at this stage there is not one solution to solve all problems. Together, we need to further discuss various options and scenarios. In the meantime, we need to focus on short-term financing options.

I would also like to inform you that my family and I are relocating to Dubai at the end of December 2015. Although the timing is not by any means ideal, given the Club’s current issues, I strongly believe that we have a good team on board to secure the future of the Hollandse Club. Together we can beat these difficult times. I will look back very fondly on our 5 ½ beautiful years in Singapore, in which the Hollandse Club played an important role in our daily lives. From swimming to tennis; from hockey to judo; not forgetting all the social activities - it has been great! We will sincerely miss all of this. My duties as president will be taken over by the vice president, Anneloes van Haaren, until the upcoming AGM in March. Please do not hesitate to contact her if you have any questions.

As some of you have already heard, our General Manager, Daniel van Dijk, is relocating to the Netherlands. We would like to thank Daniel for all the effort and work during the past year, and we wish him all the best in future adventures.

We are in the process of hiring a new General Manager. As soon as there’s any news, the Main Committee will inform you.

I would like to thank my fellow committee members for all the effort they have put into the Club over the past few years. It has not been easy at all. We had – and still have - tough times, but I do still believe that together we can achieve a lot. Stay positive, although I know it’s not always easy. A big, big thank-you to all of you!

Last but not least, I would like to thank all Hollandse Club staff for the wonderful years. My family and I enjoyed every moment at the Hollandse Club, partly because of all of you. We will take you and Singapore in our hearts wherever we go.

GM’S MESSAGE Dear Members,

Whilst we are all preparing for a landmark EGM and imminent changes at the Club, I am also writing my last message to you as General Manager. After five wonderful years in Singapore, I will be moving back to Europe. It has been a great experience working for the Hollandse Club and meeting so many of you.

I would like to thank the wonderful staff and service providers who, under all circumstances, keep smiling and remain committed to make your stay at the Club a pleasant one.

As the New Year unfolds, January and February will be all about new beginnings.

This issue of the magazine is dedicated to giving you new ideas and hopefully plenty of inspiration to try something new and different this year. Singapore is all about change, reinventing and improving yourself - so join in! There will be new sports classes, workshops and activities to boost your energy and to give you a head start in the New Year.

You are all invited to the New Year’s Drinks on 17th January – a great opportunity to catch up with old friends and to make some new ones! On 20th February, we will usher in the new Lunar year with a traditional Lion Dance performance. This time around, we actually welcome the Monkey on the terrace! We have delicious specials lined up for you, plus we will offer the traditional Yu Sheng Salad again to help you celebrate the New Year with friends and family.

Last but not least, I would like to thank the members and especially the many volunteers whom I encountered at the Club during my tenure here. You (can) make all the difference. To all the wonderful, cheeky and adventurous kids: be good, stay safe and enjoy yourselves!

Hafiz joined the Front Desk team in December. In addition to tending to all members’ enquiries and room guests, Hafiz will also be assisting the Sports and Events Department. Hafiz just completed his National Service and has a diploma in Sports Management.

Our Guest Rules

DO YOU KNOW?

Members may introduce guests to enjoy the sports facilities with them, provided they are properly registered in the Guest Book at the reception. A guest fee per person of $2.50 (Mon-Fri) or $5.00 (Sat, Sun & PH) applies and will be charged to the member’s account. At present, a maximum of three guests may be introduced per member per day.

Persons who are residents of Singapore (all nationalities) may be introduced only once during each calendar month, for one day only. Non-residents may be introduced for no longer than two weeks. This does not have to be consecutive.

. Members have priority rights to use the facilities over

guests, but only until the booked time has not yet commenced. . Please note that if your guest wishes to use the Gym, he or she will have to be registered and a Gym guest fee of $20 applies.

Children of guests may be introduced to the Kids’ Rooms. A Kids’ Room guest fee of $4 per half hour will be charged to the member’s account.

NEW MAIN COMMITTEE MEMBER My name is Filip Olde Bijvank and, together with my wife and two lovely daughters, we have been calling Singapore our home for almost two years. As the family wanted to get to know as many like-minded people as possible, we were delighted to have found the Hollandse Club and immediately became members in July 2014.

Of course, by working in a Dutch company, it’s an advantage to know fellow professionals working in Singapore.

My family has been actively joining the various sporting activities organised by the Club, which are always fun and amazing. We have also introduced the Hollandse 8 HOLLANDSE CLUB | WWW.HOLLANDSECLUB.ORG.SG

Club to our friends who have just arrived in Singapore.

As I was General Counsel at Vroon Shipping back in Holland, and currently their Managing Director for the Asia Pacific region, it will certainly allow me to share my knowledge with the fellow main committee members.

I have been an enthusiastic hobby cook for many years and, as such, I have a close affinity with the Food & Beverage side of the Club. Lastly, together with the committee members, we strive to contribute and work towards improving the Club!

MEMBERSHIP

MARIANNE VAN OORD-VAN PUTTEN RETURNS TO VISIT THE HOLLANDSE CLUB One of the things that I enjoy about volunteering in the Hollandse Club Library is the people I get to meet.

One day at the end of October, I was pleasantly surprised when Marianne van Oord-van Putten came in. She and her husband are lifetime members of the Hollandse Club and were active in the Club in the mid-1980s, having arrived in Singapore about a year before the MRT first opened. They still have friends in Singapore and in Hong Kong, so when they travel to Asia, she likes to drop in at the Club and have a look around and see what has changed.

We started talking, and I discovered that she, too, had been a Librarian at the Club in the past. She used to open the Library on Saturday afternoons while her three boys swam and played tennis. Otherwise, she points out, she would just have been sitting on the Terrace waiting for them.

Things have changed, and changed again on the Singapore scene since they lived here; she remembers when the Hollandse School moved from Orange Grove Road to near the Swiss Club in 1986, and that they created a booklet with all the children’s drawings to commemorate the move. A lot of pupils left that year, when their families relocated, and more younger couples and single expats came to Singapore instead.

Only about a hundred pupils remained at the school.

I wondered what the Library had been like when Marianne was a librarian. Lots of people would come in to look for Dutch books to read, especially since there were no e-readers then, and it was good for children to borrow books. If people requested books that were not in the Library, they would do their best to bring them in, as we do now. She remembers a big table, similar to the one currently in the Library, and she noted that the entrance is in a different place now. She was as fascinated by the story of how the Club has changed over the years and the various incarnations of the Library as I was about what the Club had been like before. She was intrigued to discover that the Library had moved up to what is now the Chill Out Room and then returned in the intervening years.

Marianne was also a member of what was then the Ladies’ Committee, which organised things like the kids’ events. She was especially involved in putting together tours in Singapore with a guide, such as to a Little India temple, the ‘dragon & chopstick’ tour of Chinatown or a Changi prison tour. In those days, there were no new buildings on the East Coast. She would create posters for the tour using drawings and photos. People would sign in on a list and then suggest ideas for another tour.

Others on the committee would organise the arrival of Sinterklaas from Pulau Bukum, the Shell island.

Sinterklaas would arrive on the island the night before the event and, in the morning, the children would wait at Pasir Panjang for him to sail to the mainland on a boat with flags aflutter. From there, Sinterklaas would travel by bus or rickshaw or school bus (always a different mode of transportation) to the Hollandse School, which was then at Orange Grove Road.

It is always wonderful to meet returning members and hear their stories, and find out what life in Singapore was like in years gone by and what is different or not nowadays. ‘Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose’ as they say.

Inspiration: Wet Stuff

NEW BEGINNINGS

It’s a bright, fresh New Year, filled with possibilities and new beginnings. Maybe you have always wanted to start your own company, and this could be the year to take the plunge! Many members of the Hollandse Club have done just that, and created many new and diverse businesses since coming to Singapore. We talked to four of these inspirational women.

Inge Kuipers: Photography & Fashion You may recognise the first of our ladies: our own Inge Kuipers, who takes the beautiful photographs you see in the Hollandse Club Magazine. She doesn’t stop there, though; she also deals in fashion. But I’ll let her tell her story: My name is Inge and I’m from the Netherlands, the south western province of Zeeland to be exact. I’m here with my husband and our three children aged 11, 8 and 6. We came to Singapore five-and-a-half years ago for my husband’s work. We were supposed to come for just one year but we like living in Singapore so much that we’re still here!

The liveliness of the city and the climate are what attracts us most. There’s always something to do and we much prefer the heat (as sweaty as you may get…) and the outdoor lifestyle to the long Dutch winters. It’s great to go the beach at the weekend and feel like you’re on a mini-holiday when you’re just a 20-minute drive away from your own home.

Then, of course, as cliché as it is, we like the fact that Singapore is clean, green and safe, and that it’s so centrally located for travelling to many exotic countries.

We have seen a lot of Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand already but we never get tired of travelling.

There are still plenty of destinations on our wish list such as Nepal and Bhutan.

We’ve been members of the Club for the past five years. It’s a great place for sports activities, so you’ll often find us there for tennis lessons and swimming.

We also enjoy the special events that are organised regularly, such as pool parties, holiday camps or, recently, Sinterklaas. It’s also nice to just hang out and relax around the pool.

Recently, I started my company INQ Design, which has two business activities: photography services and retail of women’s fashion.

I’ve been an enthusiast amateur photographer for many years and have helped out by taking photos at many events, for instance at sports events, for dog rescue organisations, schools and, of course, the Hollandse Club Magazine. I also enjoy travel photography, though I sometimes drive my family a bit crazy because I want to stop and take photos everywhere (laughs).

I’ve been thinking of doing this professionally for a long time and a few months ago I decided to set up my own company. At the moment I mainly do events photography, as well as taking photos for business websites.

Besides taking photos, I also sell women’s fashion at fairs and pop-up events. I don’t have any experience in this, but fashion is just something that I’m very interested in so I figured I could give it a go. A lot of (expat) women find it difficult to buy flattering clothes here in Singapore, especially when they’ve got curves.

Therefore, I decided to sell clothes that go from size S up to size 3XL US size and at an affordable price.

MEMBERSHIP

Though sometimes it can be busy, when I’m at a lot of fairs, I enjoy both aspects of my business. I can even combine the two by taking my own fashion photos.

This is something I’m new to, so it’s giving me a chance to learn and grow as a photographer. A few of the ladies that work at the Hollandse Club were kind enough to pose for me, so we took photos at the Club. We had a lot of fun and they were happy with their photos. They looked amazing, so I think I’ll ask them again.

The best comment I got was from someone who also modelled some dresses for me. She was very nervous

about it since she actually doesn’t like to pose for photos but was kind enough to help me out. When I showed her the end result she was so pleased with her photos that she said, ‘I look like a model!’

Marianne Doele: Body Shaping From clothes and photographs that make you look good to a body that looks good. Marianne Doele tells us how she created The Body Firm.

Almost 11 years ago, we arrived in Singapore from the Netherlands. My girls were one and three years old. In fact, my youngest daughter turned one on the plane on our way to Singapore. We found a really cosy condo on the East Coast where we set up house. At the weekends, we explored Singapore, played golf in Batam, and swam with the girls. I really like the diversity of the city. You really feel that you live abroad while walking through Little India or China town, but once you feel homesick, you can just go to Ikea and pretend to be back home in Amsterdam.

After a while, I started missing having Dutch people around me: the ease of discussion, the shared humour, hearing other people’s experiences of living abroad.

I visited the Dutch Club and liked it immediately. We signed up and I started to play tennis, my favourite sport. My children had swimming classes and loved the Kids’ Rooms. I joined several social tennis groups and thoroughly enjoyed all the tennis events that I did.

After six months of exploring Singapore, I started to become a bit restless. I have always worked back home in the Netherlands and it was time to start doing something again, but what? I have a marketing background and worked as a freelance marketeer for years, but I wanted to do something else. Then I went

home for a holiday and met up with a friend, who looked really great! She had her body back in shape by going to a salon where she did a muscle toning treatment. I was very curious and, at the same time, very sceptical about it, but another friend also did the treatment and also had great results. It really inspired me! Upon arriving back in Singapore, I started searching for a similar system. I went to all the big slimming salons, but wherever I went, I was greeted in a very cold environment; they would hardly speak English and they always tried to pressure me into buying treatments without telling me what their benefits were. MEMBERSHIP to England to buy the exact same system as the one my friends were using. I hired a room in a nail studio in Holland Village and started The Body Firm. At first I was a bit scared that I would not get any customers.

I told my friends about what I was doing and, of course, built a website and did some marketing; but I had no idea if anyone would show up and imagined myself sitting there reading the newspaper the whole day. Luckily, none of this happened! I was fully booked from the first day, and everyone was so curious.

It was a great time and I met really nice people and had a lot of happy customers.

Soon it was time to move and to expand. After eight years, we have now a really nice salon on Orchard Road and we have a team of five. We have various body-shaping treatments, offer specialised massages, and have added a wide range of facials. The Singapore government always stimulates growth in small businesses, and that gives us huge opportunities to keep exploring

the beauty market, make investments and always improve and offer the best products and services at all times.

It is my job to do the marketing of The Body Firm and to create brand awareness. When we started in 2007 that was mainly through print: advertising and advertorials in magazines. Now, that has almost 100% shifted to online advertising: a trendy, up-todate website with a blog, Google adwords, an active Facebook page, and Instagram strategy to name few.

It has been a wonderful journey, from the good looks of a friend in Holland to a full service spa; and it has been worth all the time and effort. I still enjoy going to the Dutch Club and playing tennis. Last season, I sponsored our tennis team, which was also part of the fun we had as a team and it really created a good team spirit.

Willeke Lankamp: Personal Coaching As well as feeling good on the outside, you should feel good on the inside. Willeke Lankamp tells us her story of how she created BLOOM, a training and coaching company.

My name is Willeke Lankamp and I have been living in Singapore for two and a half years now, together with Rogier and my sons Pepijn (10), and Olivier (8). Before we came to Singapore, I lived in the Netherlands and London.

Palms! Beach! Sunshine! were some words that crossed my mind when I heard we would move to Singapore for Rogier’s job. And indeed I had that holiday feeling for at least 6 months. But then I realised this is not a big holiday: I live here now. Rogier goes to his office, the boys go to school ... and what about me? Of course, I have discovered Singapore! Museums, temples, nature, the beach and interesting neighbourhoods have kept me busy. I even visited the parliament. As making friends takes time and a lot of coffee or, even better, wine, I went for a lot of lunches.

We also made trips to beautiful places around Singapore like Kota Kinabalu, Siem Reap and Australia. But in terms of ‘fulfillment’ I felt something was missing.

We became members of the Hollandse Club as soon as we arrived in Singapore. It was not part of our expat package, but we loved the atmosphere, the very friendly staff, the activities and meeting other members 12 HOLLANDSE CLUB | WWW.HOLLANDSECLUB.ORG.SG

Our boys have swimming lessons, I do Pilates and we all play tennis.

Then there was a vacancy in the Main Committee for Vice President being responsible for HR, which is my background. Being a psychologist and a certified coach by profession, I worked in HR and talent development at Heineken for around 10 years. So I applied for, and got the role. As member of the Main Committee, I organised intercultural training and customer service courses for the staff, was involved in various HR matters and learned a lot about the Club from the inside out.

After a great year, I had to make the decision: staying

And then there was this little voice from the inside (no worries, I am not crazy, I have heard him many times before and I believe many people have this little voice inside). Mine said to me: “Are you doing what you really love most? Are you really happy or just really comfortable?” I decided to listen this time and focus on my real passion: professional development by personal growth. I started as a voluntary trainer at charity organisation, HOME, where I give ‘Dreamclass’ workshops for domestic helpers. I then met Sheila Bouwman- Ottervanger and Zsuzsika Belovics, with whom I walked through the beautiful Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. We talked about our passions, our dreams, our goals and it appeared that we had a lot in common. That’s how BLOOM started!

BLOOM is a training and coaching company. We offer customised training for companies, with focus on strength, creativity and intrinsic motivation. We also offer workshops and training for individuals on different topics that all focus on personal growth. For us, personal growth is about finding out what you really want; how to create more time for the things you love to do. For more in-depth insight and support we offer personal coaching. All sessions have a clear goal to work towards. Training and coaching can either

be in Dutch or English.

Joyce Coenraads: Children’s Furniture We talked to Joyce Coenraads, who set up Deer Industries to sell furniture built for children.

This is always a hard question to answer because where do you begin …

Let’s start with my family. I’m a proud mother of three children – Joshua, Lois and Lola, aged 9, 7, and 5, respectively.

Going back to the beginning of time, I was born and raised in a small town in Brabant where virtually everyone knew each other. After my studies, I escaped to the ‘Wild West’ of the Netherlands to work in corporate real estate at Royal Ahold for 13 years. And this is also where I met my husband. In 2011, we were offered an opportunity here in Singapore, so here we are today.

Being an entrepreneur always appealed to me.

I knew that moving to Singapore would open up new opportunities to fulfil that dream. Upon arriving, I recognized that the market for contemporary and designer kids’ bedroom furnishings was limited in Singapore compared to the vast offering in the Netherlands. And so the idea behind Deer Industries was born – and I ventured into the world of entrepreneurship.

Are you enjoying living in Singapore?

It’s never easy uprooting everything to move halfway

across the world to an entirely new city and culture.

So I took my time to get adjusted, to relax and to enjoy the comfortable life here in Singapore. It is great to see that there’s a strong Dutch community and I am truly grateful for the friends I’ve made since our Asian journey began in 2011. What I really enjoy about Singapore, besides the warmth (not the humidity though), is the accessibility to not only different cities and cultures across Asia Pacific but also the lifestyle of having a city as well as some outdoor activities for the family. We enjoy relaxing on Sentosa, frolicking at the beach and enjoying a casual dinner.

How did you discover the Hollandse Club?

Of course, every Dutchy knows the Club! You get tuned-in pretty quickly through the Dutch community.

I also like being able to eat a ‘broodje kroket’ (with mayo) every now and then, while my kids have tennis or swimming lessons. With the warmth of the sun shining upon us at the Club, it feels like a vacation right away.

Tell us a bit about Deer Industries and why you decided to start your own business.

Deer Industries is a kids’ lifestyle retailer with a wide range of furniture, bedding and accessories designed with a European flair to inspire. When I saw this niche market with a tremendous potential for growth, I knew I had to go for it. This was the time and the place to start my own company.

Coming from a corporate background, I was sound in knowledge of operations and systems but starting a small business comes with a whole set of new challenges – it keeps my day-to-day extremely ‘interesting’ each and every day.

Was it hard to set up your business here?

When I mentioned ‘interesting’ earlier, I really meant that, at the beginning, I had to do and learn everything by myself. Well, with the help and counsel of some really good friends, I learned the little nuances and intricacies of starting a new business venture each step along the way. I’m grateful – most days [laughs] – that I’m afforded the opportunity to take my hobby of design inspiration and turn it into a career. But

best of all, I truly get to interact with so many nice, new people who are all encouraging and want to see Deer Industries become a success.

I RESOLVE...

It’s the New Year, and maybe you have made resolutions to become healthier, especially after the holidays and the celebrations over the festive season. I have usually made similar resolutions for the past few years. I start out with good intentions, but they tend to peter out (long) before the end of the year. So what can I do to make a good start and make it stick? I got advice from some of the many coaches we have at the Hollandse Club.

Ashraf: Personal Training I must confess, going for a workout at the gym is not one of my favourite things to do; I’m never quite sure what I should do to target particular problem areas or if I’m doing it correctly so that I don’t injure myself. Plus (unlike many of my friends at the Club) if I can go anytime, I’m more likely to put it off.

So I find that scheduling a personal training session with Youri or Ashraf, who can both be contacted through the Hollandse Club gym, is more constructive.

I have done sessions with both of them, and I must say I was impressed at the way that they work. They don’t just throw you at the equipment and get on with a standard routine; rather, they consider your goals and limitations to build a workout for each individual, as well as advising you on nutrition and exercise outside the gym. I asked Ashraf and Youri for their advice on becoming fitter in the New Year.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Ashraf. I am married with two children, aged 36 months and 26 months.

Why Singapore and the Hollandse Club?

I have lived in Singapore from the day I was born, 37 years ago.

I have been to most of the Clubs on the island but have yet to come across a club like the Hollandse Club, which is so rich in family bonding as well as having different nationalities working happily alongside each other. It has been a memorable journey all this while meeting with all types of challenges.

So what do you do at the Hollandse Club gym?

It has been a decade exactly from the day I joined the Club as a personal trainer. Ever since then, I have been working alongside physiotherapists as well neurologists as a rehab trainer for Club members. Simply put, my specialty is weight training as well as functional training, which varies from beginner to competitive as well as rehab training.

Nevertheless, my service as a freelance trainer will not stop here but will still be going on strong as long as I am needed by any of the Club members.

What is your advice for starting out the New Year well?

As we embark on this New Year, let us put fitness in as a part of our New Year’s resolution. Most gym users know where to find me, but those who are new and are willing to try using the gym can easily locate me at the Club gym on weekday mornings and Saturdays, or get my contact details from the gym reception or Club receptionist. ... and then keep it going?

Each of us is unique in every way possible, which is why each of us needs a specific workout regime to cater to our goal.

It is really heartbreaking to see most gym users doing their workouts without understanding their bodies’ needs. In recent years, I have encountered lots of requests for rehab training after lots of sports with no proper strengthening workout being done. Despite my being able to help some people, others need to seek medical attention.

MEMBERSHIP I won’t be able to get to the gym every day; what else can I do?

Diet will also vary for each of us according to our goal and body needs.

It is very understandable that most of you need to travel for work and will have not much time to use a gym or even exercise. Nevertheless, I will ensure a workout routine, which only needs a mat and no weights and can be done in any hotel room with no hassle, and is guaranteed to be safe.

What can you do to help us?

What else can we do apart from exercise?

Apart from a workout routine, good nutrition and a well-balanced diet is also required in attaining healthy living. A good diet should consist of good sources of carbohydrates, proteins, fats and fibre.

We trainers will assist individuals with workouts and dietary advice to get the best out of what we are doing.

I give all first-time requests for personal training the first session free of charge. Those who are keen on doing a session together as a couple will be charge at a special rate and will receive a full hour of attention from me.

Youri Kruse: Personal Training Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Youri and I am from Holland. I have been living here with my Singaporean family (wife, twin boys 4 years old) for 5 years now and work as a freelance fitness instructor at the club.

Why Singapore and the Hollandse Club?

My wife is Singaporean and we found Singapore to be a fine place to raise our young children. Singapore has got many things to offer; I personally enjoy the location (easy access into Asia) and actually don’t mind the weather. I think the Club is beautiful with great facilities and location. The relaxed atmosphere makes it a great place for children.

How can you help us?

My work includes training members in the aspects of general fitness, strength and muscle training, weight loss and gain.

What is your advice for starting out the New Year well?

Motivation and planning are the most important factors in long-term goals; clients who are committed are very successful. Exercise must be adjusted to the client, as overtraining is quite common in the early stages of training. If you are tired all day after a session, you have properly overdone it. Start easy and give yourself plenty of time to rest; results will come in time.

... and then keep it going?

Continuity is extremely important; a positive outlook combined with a realistic view yields results. Celebrating your achievements can keep the momentum going.

Exercise is not confined to gyms; you can exercise with your kids at home or run with the dog.

I can’t see myself going to the gym every day; what else can I do?

I think for everybody, from novice to advanced, twice a week is enough. A whole-body training session would be advisable in a gym. One can do 15-minute body weight exercises (adjusted squats, push ups, lunges etc.) at home three times a week. This can be a great start on your path to fitness.

What else can we do apart from exercise?

Nutrition is a big part of any solution, for example, most women (especially when training) are lacking quality protein for optimal health. Stress is another part; when stress hormones (cortisol, estrogen, adrenaline etc.) are dominant (high), any fitness goal will become more difficult.

David Verlinde: Swimming

Swimming, I think, is one of the easier sports as the water buoys your weight, and so it doesn’t feel like you’re doing so much work. And, in hot and humid Singapore, it’s a pleasure to slide into the refreshing water to cool down.

Many of you will be familiar with AquaDucks’ coach, David Verlinde. If he’s not down at the pool coaching, he’s on the Terrace advising parents on how their children can improve their swimming or joking around with the kids themselves; he and my boys have a running argument on the relative merits of the Dutch and English football teams. I asked David if he had any tips on becoming a bit fitter and healthier for the New Year.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am David Verlinde, from Amsterdam, from a family with three brothers. I got married in 2009 to my wife, Elisabeth. I have been in Singapore since 2008.

Why Singapore and the Hollandse Club?

I came to Singapore to get the best job in the world: to teach swimming in a tropical country with monkeys in the trees.

Hmm … I thought my monkeys were in the pool.

So how can you help us improve our fitness?

You can find my colleague, Lulu, and me around the pool, where we offer learn-to-swim classes, swim training and aqua fit classes. We can help you with your goals: losing weight, getting (swim) fit, technique improvement, preparing for triathlon, and so on.

For those who don’t have time...

Solution: make time.

How do we keep up the good work?

Motivation only makes you start. Don’t look for motivation; make it a habit.

Can you suggest some easy routines? (An hour every day in the pool is not going to happen in my week, so is there something else I can do?)

An hour every day is not necessary; twice a week is enough, in general. Start slowly and build it up. The body is not made to do too much in the beginning.

If you cannot do 60 minutes, then do 30, or even 15 minutes to start with, but make it a habit.

What can you do to help us?

Can you give us some advice for starting out the New Year well?

Join swimming training sessions or aqua fit at the Club; during these classes you burn around 750 calories.

Losing weight is, in theory, not that hard: for each 9000 calories you burn more than you eat, you lose 1kg.

BUDDENBROOKS DINNER @ THE HOLLANDSE CLUB

When settling in Singapore, or having established a new life already, it can be challenging to meet people outside your usual community, especially as people are constantly moving in and out of Singapore.

The Buddenbrooks dinner is an initiative I used to organize together with some friends in Delft, The Netherlands. Since our move to Singapore, I thought it might be fun to organize it here, too, either for people who have just moved to Singapore or those who just love to meet new people. It’s an informal way to expand your friends or acquaintances over a nice dinner.

A Buddenbrooks dinner is a gathering where participants have the chance to meet new people, while enjoying a fine meal. The motto is ‘excellent food, nice conversations’.

Every invited couple invites a couple they know, but the rest of the participants do not know their guests.

To start the nice conversations, we have a couple of debating topics or conversation starters.

The Name The book Buddenbrooks by Thomas Mann is set in Lübeck, near the Baltic coast, in nothern Germany; Old Johann Buddenbrook and his French wife, Antoinette, invite family and various friends to regular dinners.

They debate various - sometimes delicate - political, religious and cultural topics. The atmosphere is casual and informal. Guests feel free to speak their minds, and one of the guests may even bring an instrument Launch in Singapore The first Buddenbrooks dinner in Singapore took place on Thursday December 10th at the Hollandse Club in Singapore. It was a fun evening; we had interesting conversations and the food was fab.

EAT YOUR VEG!

It is not that long ago that my (then) five-yearold daughter looked at me, head cocked, stating with a weary voice: Mama, you know I don’t eat vegetables. She did not say it, but I could read the why do you keep serving them in her eyes.

Yet recently, when I asked what she wanted to eat on her birthday, she summed up, without hesitating: green beans, broccoli, pink fish (salmon steak) and rice. In that order. I am still recovering from the shock.

Kids and vegetables: always a tricky combination.

Yet the older they get, the more they grow into them. No longer do I have to hide our vegetables in pasta sauces, puréed soups and fritters. They actually like them now.

Green beans especially have been a firm favourite in our household for a while. We have had fights over who gets the last ones, and those were fierce fights too. The other day we served two large packets of beans, and I had naively assumed that after three of my kids had feasted on those,

enough would be left for my husband and I. No. They ate them all.

I remember how much I hated green beans growing up, especially those served at my grandmother’s house. Memories of green beans boiled to death in the classic Dutch way still make me shudder. We never have those. I have not boiled a vegetable since I-can’t-remember-when. We stir-fry.

Whether you still purée and hide your children’s vegetables, or believe that they will only learn when they know what they eat, the way of preparation and presentation does have a big impact. And it is true: vegetables can be very yummy. We asked some of the Hollandse Club kids about their favourite healthy recipes, which can be seen next page.

Healthy Recipe 1:

Karien’s Courgette Fritters

By Karien

Ingredients: . 1 large courgette . 1 egg . 2 tablespoons flour (any type, wheat, corn, tapioca) . A handful of herbs, to taste . Salt and pepper, to taste . Olive oil, for frying

Methods: Grate the courgette, and mix it with the egg and flour into a thick batter. Add some pepper, salt, and herbs and spices to taste. Heat the oil in a frying pan and scoop in small round little pancakes of the batter.

Fry the fritters for a few minutes on both sides until crisp and brownish. Serve with tomato sauce or, for the more daring, sweet Thai chilli sauce.

With fritters, you can vary them endlessly; the only thing you need to watch out for is that the batter does not get too wet. In that case, add more flour.

Tasty and colourful to add are grated carrots and sweet potatoes. To make the fritters into a full meal, add some shredded fish or a tin of tuna.

One of Frederique’s favourite dishes is Bean Salad. She is always very happy whenever it is on the menu: it a wonderful salad to accompany a BBQ. They often eat it with a grilled sausage or chargrilled fresh tuna.

Healthy Recipe 2:

Did you know that beans are very healthy, full of fibre and low in calories?

Bean Salad

Ingredients: . 1 can of cannellini beans . 1 can of borlotti beans . 1 can of kidney beans . 1 red onion, peeled and finely sliced . 4 anchovy fillets, chopped . 3 handfuls of fresh basil, mint and parsley, roughly chopped . 1-2 fresh red chillies, deseeded and finely sliced.

Optional. (We leave this out for the children and add some ground dry chillies later for the adults.) . Juice of 1 lemon . Extra virgin olive oil . Salt and pepper

Methods: Drain and rinse the beans. Put them in a bowl and add the other ingredients, 8 tablespoons of nice olive oil, the red onion, and anchovies (and chillies). Season with salt and pepper and the lemon juice – for a bit of a twang. Throw the herbs into the dressed beans, mix up and divide between the plates.

Serve it with a grilled tuna steak or a sausage.

My father was the first one who made it, without oyster sauce.

Then my auntie made it better with oyster sauce.

For me, my sisters and my friends, this is our favourite healthy food.

Boontjes met vlees

(stir-fried beef with green beans)

Ingredients:

. 500g stir-fry beef, in thin strips . 2 or 3 (~200g) packets of green beans, cleaned and in 3-5cm pieces . 1 onion, finely chopped . 1-2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped . Kechap Manis (Indonesian sweet soy sauce) For the marinade: . 3-4 tablespoons light soy sauce . 2-3 tablespoons oyster sauce . 1 tablespoon sesame oil . 1 tablespoon corn starch . pepper and salt

Methods: I have given indicative quantities for most of the ingredients because we don’t really do exact measuring in our kitchen, and also because it depends on your personal preference. You can’t really go wrong, and you can always add more soy sauce or oyster sauce later. Mix all the ingredients for the marinade, and add it to the beef. Let it sit for a while, at least half an hour.

Heat a wok with a generous glug of oil and fry the garlic and onion for a few minutes. Add the beans, and stir-fry these for a few minutes as well until they are almost done, before you add the beef. Make sure your wok is hot and you stir well.

When everything is cooked, add a generous glug of kechap manis to taste. Serve with plain rice, and sambal for those who like some added bite.

Sinterklaas Arrival!

We were waiting for Sinterklaas to arrive at Marina Bay. We were singing Sinterklaas songs, one of them was my favorite: Zwartepieten stijl!

It was very hot. Sinterklaas arrived by boat. We could see the Zwartepieten from far as they were waving on the roof.

When they arrived the Zwartepieten were skipping and throwing pepernoten to us at the same time. Then Sinterklaas came off the boat, and the Pieten were giving pepernoten to the children, while we were singing “Zie ginds komt de stoomboot�. Then Sinterklaas and all of us went to the Hollandse Club, and there were other people too. First there was a show. The man juggled sticks on fire and many balls. And then Sinterklaas came in. If you wanted, you could give him a drawing.

The Zwartepieten were dancing and all the children were singing. I went on stage with the Sint, and danced with Zwartepiet. They blindfolded me, and I was dancing with a different Piet than I thought.

Now we can sing a Sinterklaas song when we go to bed and put our shoe, and in the morning we find pepernoten, schuimpjes, kruidnootjes or drawing stuff.

ARTIST INSIGHTS: INEKE HOLLMAN-VAN DE WATER

Ineke grew up in The Netherlands and graduated from the Academy of Arts (“Hogeschool der Kunsten”) in Utrecht with a specialization in fashion and illustration. She then started as a freelance stylist in Amsterdam, working for magazine publishers, television producers, a hotel chain, and a model agency. Due to moving abroad, Ineke picked up her painting ambition again, and she went to the School of Painting (“School voor Beeldende Kunsten Overijse”) in Brussels. It was at this school that she started working with the technique of mixed media, a combination of acrylic paint and different kinds of materials that expresses and visualizes her inspiration. A lot of her work is an illustration of her travels through many countries, during which she gained an endless source of inspiration and a challenge to put her creative ideas on canvas.

When you travel, you meet all kinds of people and experience different cultures. Every country and its people have a story to tell. It is a story about colour, music, family, religions, spirituality and traditions. What is the core of the existence and what is this characterised by? What is its history and how does this become visible? Every nation has its characterisations and is a piece of art in itself.

The specific materials she uses in her mixed media work are well selected and chosen to create and reflect an atmosphere of being a part of the painting. It draws you in, you want to touch it and you don’t feel like an outsider anymore.

Ineke is a practising artist based in Singapore but her work is being sold and exhibited in Europe as well. She makes pieces for exhibitions but also works on commission. Her work can be seen in private exhibitions, galleries and the Affordable Art Fair. Her paintings are currently on display in the Tradewinds Bar.

ARTIST INSIGHTS: SANDRA MARCHEROUX Sandra Macheroux has lived the expat life since she was eight years old. She had a successful career as a veterinarian and she practiced in many corners of the world. However, parenthood made it difficult for her to be fully devoted to her much-loved veterinary career, and she soon discovered a passion for photography.

Three years ago, she completed a Diploma in Photography and within a year she changed her career path from “clinic to camera”. Her photography business grew very organically, not driven by a desire to create more income but by a true love for the art and creative potential of photography.

She is also a mum to two lovely boys and an old Golden Retriever.

She now teaches photography, sells Fine Art Photography on a variety of media, and enjoys travel, event and pet photography.

Most of her prints are of images taken in Singapore where Sandra and her family have been living for the past seven years. She finds great inspiration in the bright colours, and the mix of the old and the new of Singapore streets.

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK AND RESOLUTIONS...

I will start with a disclaimer: I am not one for New Year’s Resolutions. Too many times I vowed that this would be ‘my year’, where I will shed my bad habits, lose weight, be less stressed and so on.

By the time it is February, my burst of motivation has ended. However, in the spirit of this New Year, I want to put forth an assertion: if you do resolve to do something this 30 HOLLANDSE CLUB | WWW.HOLLANDSECLUB.ORG.SG

FEATURES this year, commit to pay a visit with your family or friends to the Asian Civilisations Museum. It is a very manageable goal and perhaps you have been there before. My advice: go again. Let me explain.

The Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) has been named the top museum in Singapore and ranked ninth in Asia by TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards for Museums released in September 2015.

So to call the Asian Civilisations Museum a hidden gem would be truly an understatement.

By invitation of the Association Française de Singapour, I made my way down to the ACM. When I visited, I talked to Mei Yi Wee, the deputy director, in their new restaurant Empress and then toured the then not-quite-finished museum. We talked about the museum, the collection and the role of the museum.

The grand ACM building was opened in 1865 as a courthouse, and has been home to the Registry of Births and Deaths as well as the Singapore Mint. It became the Empress Place Museum in 1989 before housing the ACM in 2003.

The revamp is not just on the exterior but also on the inside. ACM has always shown the connection, the richness and diversity of cultures in Singapore and Asia, and the region’s connections with the world through these cultures. But it now takes a new and fresh approach in showing this: the galleries are organised by themes, rather than geographical regions.

Long-favoured features such as The Tang Shipwreck will be prominently displayed in the new Khoo Teck Puat Gallery. The displays have been crafted in the shape of the way, in order to integrate artwork with artefacts in an innovative way, telling you the fascinating story of the ship and its cargo.

Apart from new galleries, new restaurants and many new objects, there are also two apps launched to “transform the visitor experience”. The first is the ACM app, which provides visitors with information on their mobile devices when they approach a particular object on display. The second app is the ACM VR App, which allows visitors to enjoy a virtual reality experience of the Tang Shipwreck exhibition. It provides “a 360-degree” view of 12 objects in the collection.

Workers have spent over a year on this major renovation that took place while the museum remained open. It was a structural and mechanical intervention, creating a mixture of the old and the new, the colonial and the contemporary.

Although the full renovation has not yet been completed (March 2016 for phase two, and in 2017 for the final phase), ACM was reopened officially on 14th November.

It’s totally changed, renewed, improved and radiant.

Two new wings anchor the renovation, the museum has gained 1,300sqm extra floor space, which translates into the much-needed new galleries. The new entrance on the riverside is just stunning. The whole building is re-oriented towards the Singapore River – in recognition of the long heritage it has. The Singapore River was the artery of trade and the first stop for many people, cultures and religions that have come to Singapore.

The museum has realigned the vision: the ACM wants to reflect the interconnectedness and evolution of Asian cultures. Is that not a perfect resolution for 2016 - connecting with each other?

BLACK & WHITE TOUR 16TH MARCH 2016

E xecutive Homes and the Netherlands Charity Association are excited to invite you to a private viewing of some of Singapore’s unique black-andwhite homes.

The term ‘black-and-white’ refers to a range of housing built during the British colonial period following a look made popular by the Tudor Revival Movement in the late 19th Century. The ‘black’ refers to the timbering on the upper portion of the house, which was usually blackened with a dark brown oil called creosote to help keep insects out and the wood healthy. ‘White’ refers to the brickwork, which was painted with a mixture that sounded very much like a cake recipe, except instead of flour they used crushed seashells!

These beautiful houses are highly desirable and sadly in short supply. Luckily, even if you don’t get to live in one, you can visit a selection of them thanks to an initiative by real estate company, Executive Homes.

Founder Hester Calkhoven has organized a tour of some of the island’s loveliest mansions. Through her extensive contacts, a group of current occupants have generously agreed to open their doors to visitors, giving them a tantalizing glimpse inside these architectural gems. “The tour visits some of the larger houses built in Alexandra Park, Ridley Park, Malcolm Road and Woodleigh Park, and is led by specialist heritage tour guide, Diana Chua, who can explain the architectural features and fascinating stories behind these homes.”

All proceeds from the tours go to the Netherlands Charity Association. NCA raises funds among the Singaporean expat community to donate to smaller, carefully selected local charities. Chairperson of NCA Lisette Davis says: “We are very happy that Executive Homes organizes and sponsors the Black & White tour for the third year. It’s becoming a tradition that we are always looking forward to.” This year’s proceeds will go to victims of domestic abuse.

Unfortunately, that is also an issue in some of the Singaporean homes. So, by attending the tour, you are actually donating for a good cause and helping battered women to get back on their feet.

What is it that makes the black-and-white houses so appealing?

In many cases, it’s their setting. Many of the larger properties are set in large gardens with lawns and centennial trees, often surrounded by jungle, which easily transports you back to the Singapore of the late 19th Century. For some residents, it’s like living 32 HOLLANDSE CLUB | WWW.HOLLANDSECLUB.ORG.SG

in the Garden of Eden. There are fruit trees and flowers, and beautiful birds hopping from tree to tree, not to mention the opportunity to spot the resident monitor lizard waddling across the lawn for a dip in the pool!

As urbanization continues apace and plot sizes diminish, there is quite simply nothing to beat these settings.

In terms of the houses themselves, it’s the uniqueness of the style that attracts, every time. These are not just mock Tudor constructions transplanted from the southern counties of England to South-East Asia; they’re unique homes combining Indian and Malay influences and, most of all, built to suit the Singapore environment.

Today, all black-and-whites are managed by a government agency, the Singapore Land Authority.

Many have been turned into restaurants, shops, clinics or artist’s studios. Others are still residences.

It’s possible to rent one for a two-year term through an open bidding system. Beware though! Rents can end up high; one of the largest properties reached S$45,000 per month!

Tenants are expected to respect the architectural integrity of the property, which means that you are usually required to install your own AC units, water heaters, swimming pool and sometimes upgrade kitchens and bathrooms, and then must remove these items again at the end of the lease. For the chance to live in such a unique property, this is a small price to pay!

However, if you can’t afford to rent one of these unique homes, join the Executive Homes tour at least!

HEALTHY?

TRYING TO MAKE SENSE OF THE CHALLENGES OF HEALTHY EATING

We all try to eat healthily, don’t we? Well, we try, yes. Maybe. But it is not that easy. Learning to say no to all those yummy cakes and cocktails is one thing, but an equally difficult matter is the question: what is healthy these days?

Scanning the internet, we can find millions of conflicting opinions on what ‘experts’ (either scientifically trained or self-appointed) believe is good for us.

Some promote high-fat, others low-fat eating. Some worship meat, others ban it. There is the Eatwell plate (‘schijf van vijf’ in Dutch), 5 a day, Paleo, Atkins, vegan, super-foods, gluten-free, low-fat, low-carb, high-protein, and much more. Can’t see the forest for the trees? You’re not the only one.

In the nineties, we were led to believe that eating too many eggs would raise our blood cholesterol. So we limited our egg intake, or didn’t and felt guilty at every bite. Then, a few decades later, the big news came: the effect of dietary cholesterol, like the one found in egg yolk, on our blood cholesterol is minimal.

Even the heath authorities admitted their mistake.

We can gorge on eggs again.

Then there is meat. Protein is good for you: it makes you strong, gives you energy, so if we stick to lean meat we are good, right? No, the World Health Organisation (WHO) says red meat and particularly processed meat, such as ham and salami, will increase the risk of cancer. A worldwide outcry from meat lovers resulted. Many disagree, especially followers of low-carb, high-meat diets such as Paleo, where you only eat things that were available in the era of cavemen.

Whether cavemen were particularly healthy is unknown and, beside the point, believers claim that the evolution of our digestive system is so slow that it has not yet 34 HOLLANDSE CLUB | WWW.HOLLANDSECLUB.ORG.SG

adapted to ‘modern’ additions like dairy, potato and grain.

Are you still there? Let’s take an easy one now: fruit.

Fruit tastes delicious, and has an amazing reputation.

Fruit is healthy, say five-a-day preachers, as it is full of fibre, vitamins, and minerals. So can we unanimously applaud fruit? No, say some, fruit is full of sugar, and whether sugar comes in the shape of a can of coke or a round red apple, it is still sugar. And sugar is bad: that is the one thing experts seem to agree on. Not only does it increase risks of obvious things, such as diabetes, tooth decay and obesity it has also recently been linked to blood cholesterol, cancer and heart disease.

So do we need to further discuss sugar? Can we just agree that sugar is bad for us? What about the difference between naturally occurring fruit sugars, unrefined raw sugars, honey, maple syrup and highly processed table sugars or worse, the high fructose corn syrups that are so cheap and, therefore, popular in the food industry? Different types of sugars have a different effect on our blood sugar levels yet have the same amount of calories. And yes, they all provide energy but, apart from that, they have mostly negative effects on our bodies. Having said that, naturally occurring sugars are balanced by the fibre, vitamins and enzymes in fruit and vegetables, which help the body deal with the sugars more easily and give added benefits.

Refined sugars, on the other hand, are mainly ‘empty calories’.

Fat then, you ask. What about fat? It is surely bad for you, too? If we can’t rely on simple facts, such as ‘fat will make you fat’ we will completely lose it. For sure, public opinion is still very much anti-fat. Products

FEATURES claiming to be low fat, or even fat-free, fly off the shelves. The fact that the fat is replaced by other ingredients, such as sugar, starch or chemical additives is conveniently hushed up. While most official food authorities still take the anti-fat stance, many others, often backing themselves by scientific studies, will disagree. The thing is that, like with sugars, one fat is not like the other.

Are they right? Who knows, but one thing is clear: there is more to fat than saturation. Highly processed vegetable oils, such as sunflower and rapeseed, contain high amounts of omega 6 fatty acids, which can be harmful in excess. In contrast to the omega 3 fatty acids, which you can’t really get enough of. These beneficial fatty acids are found in flaxseeds, walnuts, (soy) beans, olive oil and fish.

You knew that already: it’s the saturated fat that is bad for you, right? It clogs up your arteries, raises the risk of heart disease, obesity, Alzheimer’s, you name it.

Sure. Following that line of thought: coconut fat, one of the most saturated fats in the world, coming in at a whopping 80%, would be the worst for you. In comparison butter, which contains only 55% saturated fat, should be much healthier.

I could go on for pages about fat, but let’s leave it in limbo for now.

Yet, in recent years, foodies have hailed coconut oil as the best thing since cod liver oil. It is a miracle, and can cure most diseases under the sun. With my degree in chemistry and 10 years of experience in the food industry, I have to scratch my head here.

To brush up on my knowledge on saturated fat, I Googled ‘why is saturated fat ...’ I wanted to add ‘bad for you’ but my eye fell on the first two suggestions Google gave me for my query: ‘why is saturated fat bad for you’ and ‘why is saturated fat important.’

The food industry loves saturated fats. Why? They are stable, solid, and have many other properties that make them easy to use in ready-made food products, such as increasing stability, mouth feel and shelf life. Highly saturated fats are typically solid at room temperature (butte/ghee, cocoa butter, coconut fat), whereas the more unsaturated ones are liquid (olive oil, sunflower oil, canola/rapeseed). Every fat is, in fact, a blend and to really judge a fat you need to look at the entire profile, but I won’t bore you with too much chemical detail. Simply put: highly unsaturated fats are seen as ‘healthy’, and saturated ones as ‘bad’.

Saturated fats are also expensive. That’s why the food industry has found a trick: hydrogenated oils, also called trans-fats. Basically, you chemically trick liquid oil into being solid fat. These artificially saturated fats are especially bad for you. And our coconut fans claim that the naturally occurring saturated fat, like the one in coconut oil and butter, is a whole different story.

What about those additives, you wonder? Health authorities claim they are researched, approved and, therefore, safe to use, but the opposition cries murder. There is often no clear evidence to prove them right but even I, a trained (food) chemist, struggle to believe that all these chemicals can be good for you. So sorry, no univocal answers there either.

Now for the good news: there is one thing everyone seems to agree on: vegetables. Vegetables are good for you. Vegetables are the best. Yeah.

I thought one option at least was safe, until I recently visited a nutritionist. I had to sum up what I liked to eat and, as I am such a vegetable lover, I was sure to get kudos. I smiled smugly when I read out my list.

On spinach, she shook her head. Full of oxalates.

Beetroots? No, root vegetables are full of carbs, better avoid. Tomatoes, I offered, hesitantly, or aubergine, my absolute favourite. The look on her face said it all.

Oh no, nothing in the nightshade family. Apart from sweet peppers. They were the best, she said.

And onion and garlic were super-healthy, too.

The thing is, I hate the taste of sweet peppers, and onion and garlic make me so bloated I look three months pregnant. So at that point, I gave up.

Right now, to me, only one thing is perfectly clear: nutritional science is very complex. If even the experts disagree, how are we supposed to understand what is good for us? I have decided on a different approach: common sense. I feed my family a varied diet, rich in wholesome, natural, unprocessed products. Low on processed carbs, sugars and chemical additives. And high on flavour. I avoid products where my experience has shown they cause adverse reactions in my own body.

And sometimes we cheat. We are, after all, only human.

In a similar way, margarine tricks liquid oil into being a spreadable substance by adding emulsifiers. Originally invented to save costs (butter was dear), margarine was later recommended for health reasons. After all, it is made from liquid, unsaturated fats. And by adding more additives, even less fat is needed to make a spread. Food authorities still promote non-dairy fat spreads, such as margarine, particularly low fat varieties.

He is well known for his strong monologues, fascinating imagination and all-round professionalism in many different angles of art.

van Kooten is a well-known performer in the Netherlands.

Born in 1971 as the son of famous actor and comedian, Kees van Kooten, and actress, Barbara van Kooten, he grew up in the artistic spotlight together with his sister, Kim, who is now a famous comedian and actress, too.

For many years a silent and deeply introspective child, Graeme was forcefully made to attend speech and drama classes at the age of 8 by his unwitting parents. This triggered a chain of unlikely and theatrically-themed events culminating in this eventual venture of story machine and factory manufacture.

Haunted Halloween Spooky Night

Fri, 30th October 2015

Scary creatures, pumpkins, skeletons, bats, spiders … yes, it’s Halloween! This creepy, but fun, festival was celebrated at the Hollandse Club on Friday 30th October. Our Housekeeping department did an awesome job decorating the Indoor and Outdoor Lounge, and F&B came up with a hilarious buffet with food such as witch fingers, vampire bat wings, eyeball pizza and rack of zombie. The dishes sound a bit bizarre, but they tasted yummy!

Most families came to the Club around 6pm and enjoyed the buffet to start off the Halloween event.

At 7pm the kids gathered at the Indoor Lounge, only to be split into groups to dare a tour of the Club that guaranteed being frightened by various scary creatures hidden around the premises. And that’s exactly what happened! A zombie came out of nowhere in the car park, the bloody butcher appeared out of a big bin, the skeleton bone man scared the children with a chainsaw, and a ghost sprayed the kids wet at the Multi-Purpose Court. The kids had a blast!

After returning to the Outdoor Lounge, the youngsters danced at the disco, participated in the ‘Best Dressed’ competition and played all kind of games. All together a spooktacular night at the Hollandse Club!

Free Ballet Trial Fri, 30th October 2015

A group of eight little girls assembled in the Rotterdam Room for the ballet trial on 10th November.

All dressed up as pretty ballerinas in tutus, they were set for the trial conducted by Mayu from M.A. Ballet Singapore. For this specific age group, M.A. Ballet focuses on the fundamentals of ballet, using a lot of music to encourage the sense of rhythm. In addition to teaching the basics of ballet, the programme also aims to cultivate the natural creativity of the kids through fun movements and dancing with their

friends. This helps them discover how to express their personalities through dance.

M.A. Ballet Singapore will conduct a weekly ballet class (for 3 to 5-year-olds) from January 2016 onwards at the Hollandse Club when a minimum number of participants is reached. If you’re interested in joining the class, please register at the reception.

Sinterklaas Arrival Sat, 21st November 2015

The busy time of year for Sinterklaas and his Petes has started again! After arriving in Meppel (Holland) on Saturday 14th November, he stepped on the boat again to sail to Singapore to visit the kids living here. At around 9am, hundreds of excited kids came down to the Marina South Jetty to give Sinterklaas and his Petes a warm welcome. The atmosphere was awesome, the sun was shining, kids were dressed up, and the Sinterklaas Band was playing Sinterklaas songs! At 10am, the bumboat with all the Petes and Sinterklaas arrived. After a warm welcome from the principal of the Hollandse School, Meino Meines, and our president, Nienke Nauta-Kuipers, Sint had the opportunity to greet all the kids, and the Petes gave out pepernoten. Luckily the party wasn’t over yet as the whole delegation came to the Hollandse

Club to continue with the festivities! Once safely arrived, kids enjoyed a spectacular performance

by Jimmy Juggle, and then Sinterklaas and his Petes entered the Main Hall to continue the party, which meant a lot of singing, dancing and fun! After the show, most visitors enjoyed the buffet at the Terrace and just before heading home the kids collected their present and chocolate letter. The Sinterklaas celebration is so important in our Dutch culture, and it was amazing to celebrate it here in Singapore with so many of you!

An Evening with Dutch Comedian

Howard Komproe

Fri, 13th November 2015

On Thursday 12th November, Howard Komproe arrived in Singapore with his soundman Ruud Lanfermeijer.

They were ready for their three performances in Asia; we had also arranged for Howard to perform for the Dutch communities in Hong Kong and Shanghai.

For the comedian, this meant two weeks of exploring Asia and performing! The first performance was at the Hollandse Club on Friday 13th November.

Over 80 people came down to the Club to enjoy Howard’s hilarious stories. He talked about family, his daughters, childhood, and differences between men and women. He also shared stories about his work experiences and the very popular ‘LUL-VERHALEN’ show, which he performed in Holland. It’s a show about guys in general, so tonight women were let off lightly!

Scuba Diving Trials Sun, 22nd November & 13th December 2015

Dive organization, Orca Scuba, came down to the Club on Sunday 22nd November and Sunday 13th December to conduct the ‘Trial Dives’. The activity was an introduction to diving for both kids over 8 years and adults who had never dived before. We received a lot of interest for both days and were soon fully booked. The session started with a safety briefing in the Brabant Room where Orca Scuba informed the participants about the equipment and the theoretical part of diving. After that, we

got into the water and Orca Scuba showed us a few skills. And to round it up, participants went on an exploratory dive in the swimming pool!

Friday Kids’ Club:

Pepernoten Baking & Crafts Fri, 27th November 2015

A group of 12 excited kids gathered in the Brabant Room on Friday 27th November to bake Pepernoten with our own chef Sukimin. Once all the kids had arrived, Sukimin started giving out the dough and asked the kids to put on gloves to get ready to make their own Pepernoten. They had so much fun making balls out of the dough; some made them small, some ended up flat and others created really big

ones. Sukimin explained that if the balls were too big, the dough wouldn’t get cooked properly. Since he’s the chef, the kids followed his advice and made smaller balls. While the dough was in the oven, the kids played around and made some beautiful drawings!

Around 5.30pm, Sukimin came in again with nice smelling, warm Pepernoten and the kids loved them!

Baby Signs Trial

On the morning of Wednesday 9th December, the Brabant Room was filled with mums and dads with babies; they all came down to the Club to participate in the Baby Signs Trial. Baby Signs instructor Crista Sprengers-Voorneveld conducted the session. After a short introduction by all participants, 13 in total, Crista started the class with a song about Beebo, the mascot of Baby Signs Singapore. Beebo is a big, soft teddy bear, so Crista immediately had the attention of all the kids. During the song, she showed some signs and all the mothers, fathers and kids sang and signed with her. The theme was ‘Nature’, so all participants learned signs for a tree, butterfly, grass and so on. They also got to know the signs for mum,

dad, no, yes, hungry and tired. After more signing and reading, at the end of the trial, the coolest part was the bubbles from the bubble blower!

The Hollandse Club would like to start a weekly Baby Signs Playgroup on Wednesday mornings from 10.30am - 11.15am. The class is for mums and dads with their babies aged between 6-18 months.

SWIMMING Happy New Year to all members!

Events in November/December Award Swimming In the 2nd week of December, a lot of kids got their reward for doing such a good job in 2015. There was award swimming for our Duckies (pre-schoolers) and Proficiency (technical strokes). Good job everyone!

Let’s work together to the next level.

On 13th December, there was Diploma swimming for the Dutch children. As well as the ABC, the children got their zwemvaardigheid 1 and 2. Great job everyone!

Neptune League In November we had the Golden League and the Neptune League. There were a lot of medals for our Dutch Dolphins.

On 1st November, the Neptune League was at our own Hollandse Club: a big thank-you to all the volunteers for timekeeping. There were many PBs (Personal Best) - great job everyone!

Events Coming Up Hollandse Club Championships On Sunday 13th March 2016, we will hold the Hollandse Club Championships.

It’s open to all members from 3 to 100 years old. The registration forms will be available at the Club reception.

The closing date is 6th March.

Swim Camp During the CNY school holidays, we will be holding a swim camp to boost up the swimming skills. This will be on 10th, 11th and 12th February from 9am till 12pm for learn-to-swim and competition. The cost is $60 for each morning.

SQUASH COSMO SQUASH CHAMPIONS 2015 Who would have thunk it? Two years after the Hollandse Club did the near impossible and won the Cosmo in 2013, we then managed to prove them doubters wrong and do it all over again. The Cosmo is a league that includes the likes of Tanglin Club, SCC, The American Club, and The British Club to name but a few. Our ragtag army of misfits and misfires takes on the annual challenge of facing up to these clubs, some of whom have a mere 100 players at their disposal against our 30!

Last year, the captaincy baton was handed over to James Spalding who, in his wonderful naivety, made sure everyone got a game regardless of the outcome.

The result was a rather resounding defeat in that we finished mid tier. This year, cunning and guile were fashioned up from deep within his bowels and he played a strategic masterpiece most of the way. We had a little blip when the haze (pollution) threatened to put the kibosh on things, and James threw his toys out of the cot. He threatened to quit, but since no one else wanted the job, he persevered and we finished the season in first place.

The hosts of this year’s event put on a great end of season dinner, at which each team had to each give a little presentation that encapsulated each of our clubs. think it is a case of job well done. Kim ‘Tarantino’ Hine was truly magnificent behind the camera. The way he caught the essence and the complete stupidity of his actors will inspire generations of wannabe film makers for years to come.

Well, apart from the Cosmo victory, we now take a breather before the National Squash League starts early next year. We aim to put two Veterans teams out, a C Team and a D Team. Captain Kim will endeavour to defy the odds and lead the Vets One team to a third National title, whilst I will endeavour to find four people willing to play for the Veterans Two team on a Friday night. It is one of the great tests of character for the team members and a struggle of huge proportions.

Squash or drinking on a Friday night... If the last two years are anything to go by then we will be playing with a severely depleted team once again.

Aside from the above, as always, we are always looking out for new talent, well any talent really. If there are some budding Nick Mathews or Nicol Davids out there who don’t mind playing in conditions that would be considered dangerous for your health in most countries, then come down to the courts on a Saturday afternoon for a sweatathon of squash.

Finally, a big thank-you to captain James for his tireless work and organisation during the Cosmo League this year. His tenacity during some frustrating times was very much appreciated by the team, and I am very happy that it was a Brit that managed to lead us to the title. Can’t have an Australian (sorry, Tasmanian) taking all the glory…

We are always happy to welcome new tennis players, so if you are a new member and interested in playing tennis, please send an email to tenniscommittee@ hollandseclub.org.sg and we will keep you updated on our events.

In addition, you are very welcome to join our tennis socials. We have a ladies’ morning social on Mondays and Fridays, men’s social is every Saturday afternoon, and mixed social on Sunday afternoons. Please send us an email if you are interested.

For ladies who would like to play more competitive weekly competition matches in the WITS (Women International Tennis Singapore) please contact us, too. There are different levels from starters to pros!

The tennis committee will continue to organise events in the coming months: - Tennis Ladder will start in January for men’s singles and ladies’ doubles; - Davis Cup 2015 for adults on 29th & 30th January; - Youth Pizza Tournament, ages 10+ every two months; - Friday evening and Sunday afternoon socials.

Tennis courts can be booked through reception (6464 5225). Please do not forget to cancel the court booking if you have to reschedule or annul your tennis appointment. This way, you allow other members to play.

You only need to challenge a person or team above you on the ladder/pyramid; if you win, you climb the ladder/ pyramid by changing places.

The WITS team, Dutch D-Lites, came in 7th place this season - great effort, ladies. Sadly, we say farewell to two team mates who are leaving Singapore in December - Karen (team captain) and Nienke (Club president). We’ll miss you very much, especially the laughs. We are excited to welcome new team member, Cecile!

As of January 1st 2016, we have a new ladies’ WITS team playing in the D-division - the Dropshot Divas!

Pepernoten Tournament The yummiest tournament of the year - the Pepernoten Tournament - took place on Friday 4th December and Saturday 5th December. The tournament is a friendly youth tennis event for members of the Hollandse Club, aimed at letting children and teenagers gain more match and tournament experience.

On Friday night, the kids aged 10 years and older played in various pools based on age and playing ability. There were plenty of really exciting matches.

Saturday afternoon was planned for the younger ones, but unfortunately we had to cancel it at the last moment due to heavy rain. Luckily two ‘Zwarte Pieten’ came by to cheer up the kids by playing PingPong with them and handing out some pepernoten and tennis balls.

It was still a great and successful tournament, as all

kids had lots of fun. They, and their spectators, really enjoyed the thrilling matches of Friday evening together with the fruit, crudities, pizza and bitterballen.

SPORTS & SOCIAL EVENTS REPORTS Coaches’ Corner: Playing the Points This month, Match Point is to make you, the player, recognize the important points in each game, and to be conscious of the score.

There are many times in Club tennis when, during a game, the score becomes secondary. Note the next time you play your regular doubles or singles how many times someone says, “What’s the score?” or “Is that game already?” To give yourself an edge, be very conscious of the score and recognize the points that are very important.

Team Tennis league. The team entered the Under 14b category this year and have showed great teamwork, effort and determination to finish runner-up.

The team comprised Kane Van de Ven, Sieb Kokke, Luca Van Breugel, Matthijs Bakker, Robin Kokke, Tara van Dort & Antonella Kleemann. Big thanks also to Jorgen Kokke and Mike van Breugel who have managed the team.

Always try to win the first point. If you do, you will have the upper hand from the start. The second point is a good point to play aggressively if you are ahead or behind. If you are ahead on the third point, keep playing aggressively. If you are down Love-30, do anything you can to win the next point, or at least fight it out.

The fourth point is probably the most critical. The score could be 15-30 or 30-15 … if so, the player who is ahead will have game point if he wins the fourth point. If you are up 40-Love … go for it. If you are down Love-40 … hang in there, play safe.

Obviously, game point is always important. If you have game point, play the shots you play best … if your opponent has game point, try to keep the ball in play as long as you can, putting mental pressure on your opponent to have to win it!

If you recognize in your game what is working and what is not, then it is easier to decide what to try on which point.

Always keep track of the score so you know how to adapt your game if necessary.

JTTL (Junior Team Tennis League Update) Congratulations to the Hollandse Hotshots Tennis Team for their 2nd place finish in this season’s Junior

What is JTTL? JTTL is a team tennis competition for junior tennis players of all ages. The age groups currently offered are 10/U, 12/U, 14/U and 17/U. A and B divisions are offered for all age groups. The competition provides players with valuable singles and doubles match play opportunities as well as to be a part of a team.

The Hollandse Club is entering teams for next season starting on February 13th 2016; parents interested in entering their children can enter individually and/or we can place them in a team. The minimum standard is players must be able to serve the ball and have the capability to rally the ball over the net. Registrations close on January 23rd, so please contact Director of Tennis, Scott Johnston at scott@savitar.sg Hollandse Club Under 12 Friday Night Team Tennis Competition Congratulations to the Netsetters (Players: Ethan Mulder, Chloe Lomans and Mike Ottervanger) who won this season’s Under 12 team tennis competition played at the Hollandse Club on Friday nights. The Runners Up were the Topspinners (players: Jan van Diepen, Theo Smith and Adrian Leendertz. The competition in its 3rd season had very close matches throughout the season with the last match deciding the winning team. A big thank-you to all the players who participated in the season – it’s great to see juniors participating in match play and enjoying their tennis.

The next competition starts in January; the weekly competition is a great way for juniors taking the first step into competition. Any parents with children interested in participating in future seasons should contact Tennis Director Scott Johnston at scott@savitar.sg

HOCKEY ZOAT 2015 (BANGKOK, THAILAND) The 43rd annual ZOAT (South East Asia Tournament) took place at the end of November in Bangkok, where Dutchies residing in SEA play field hockey.

The ZOAT is held alternately in Bangkok, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

Traditionally, the weekend begins with a golf tournament on the Friday, which was played this year at the dazzling Alpine Golf Club in Bangkok by approximately 50 players.

Across the street from the hotel is the beautifully situated Dutch Embassy in Bangkok. We were all invited there for a buffet and drinks on Friday night, after which tuk-tuks stood ready to take diehards to the rooftop bar, The Nest.

Saturday and Sunday were match days; matches were played on the nicely trimmed grass pitches of the RBSC Polo Club. In total, 24 teams from eight different cities in SEA participated in the hockey tournament. Singapore was best represented with a total of two ladies’ and three men’s teams. Each year, the so-called ‘Regionalisten’ also participate in the ZOAT: these teams comprise Dutchies who used to live in the region, but have now moved elsewhere.

After a number of round-robin matches, the finals were played on Sunday. The ladies’ tournament was

won by Singapore Can-Lah, beating the Shanghai Dragon Ladies in the final - the third victory in a row for the ladies from Singapore! The Hong Kong Elite won the cup in the men’s tournament, beating the Regionalisten in the final. Singapore C came 4th deservedly: highest ranking of all Singapore men’s teams.

The highlight of the weekend was the party on Saturday night. In the nightclub, Narz, the Dutch band The Corona’s put on a great show in a colourful atmosphere.

The tournament was very well organized by the Bangkok committee, and all who were involved in it deserve a big thank-you for making it such a big success. As next year’s tournament will be held in Jakarta from 7-9 October 2016, fans ‘only’ have to wait another nine months until the next ZOAT. In the meantime, the hockey sections in Singapore will continue to play hockey enthusiastically. Besides the weekly training sessions, the men’s and ladies’ teams will start playing in various competitions again in the coming months. Also the Dutch Youth Hockey will go back to the pitch soon after the New Year has begun.
