Dear Members, Welcome to the May/June issue of the Hollandse Club magazine, when the Easter holidays are a fading memory and we are already looking forward to the summer break (or winter if you’re from Down Under). If you have been anywhere interesting on holiday, whether in Singapore or abroad, and you or your children would like to share your recommendation with other members, please send us your story. We hope you enjoy reading the magazine. In this issue, following on from the AGM, we would like to introduce to you the new Main Committee, who all enjoy spending time at the Hollandse Club and are keen to make it even better.

Speaking of improvements, we have moved the ‘At a Glance’ page to the centre of the magazine. If you’re like me, you may read about an upcoming event at the Club in the magazine, or you see a poster at the Club, but then you forget when it will be held and you don’t sign up in time. So now you can pull out the page with all the upcoming events for the following two months and stick it on your fridge, to help you remember. Claire continues our series ‘Off the Beaten Track’ with a fascinating visit to Kampong Buangkok. I really have to go there! And Karien entertains us with her account of attending a traditional Javanese wedding. For those of you interested in the history and architecture of Singapore, you can read about the NCA Black & White tour. Non-Dutch members, like me, can find out what the Kingsday (Koningsdag) celebrations were all about, and why white asparagus is such a delicacy it is known as ‘white gold’. Look out for upcoming events such as the Mother’s and Father’s Day activities, the May Fair and the White-Out Summer Party! And we announce the winners of the makeover contest for the Hollandse Club’s cow. And don’t forget - if you have any pictures of Singapore as it used to be, please do search them out and send us a copy. The next issue of the magazine will mark Singapore’s 50th National Day, and it would be fascinating to see in pictures how much the country has changed. The pictures don’t have to be very old - Singapore evolves so rapidly that the landscape is constantly changing. Happy reading! Nina Gunasingham

4 HOLLANDSE CLUB | WWW.HOLLANDSECLUB.ORG.SG
Dear Fellow Members, As you all know, our annual AGM took place in March. With quite some members present, it was a vibrant and interesting evening. For the first time in the Club’s history, our Singaporean members had voting rights at our AGM. We informed our members about the results of 2014 and presented our plans for 2015 and beyond. Some minor rule changes were discussed and approved. Another agenda item was the approval for the renovation of our Terrace. Although the plans for the renovation have been approved, we decided, after some discussions at the AGM, to present some additional design options to our members. Keywords for the new Terrace are: black and white theme, contemporary, warm atmosphere and comfortable. Renovation of the Terrace is scheduled to take place during the quiet summer months. At the AGM, we also presented our new loyalty program, which has been extended to memberships of 10 years and above and includes more attractive discounts at our food and beverage outlets. Further down in our magazine you will find more information about the (launch of our) new loyalty program. To generate extra revenue and to attract more potential members to the Club, we have decided to open our Terrace and Tradewinds Bar to non-members during off-peak periods. Non-members are welcome to enjoy our food and beverages on weekdays between 8am and 3pm. We have extended this privilege first to members of expatriate associations; visitors will only be allowed to use our two food and beverage outlets. All our other facilities, including the swimming pool, remain exclusively for members. I am very pleased to present to you the new main committee. As you can see further down in the magazine we have some new people on board as well as previous committee members taking up a new role. I believe we have a great team and I am looking forward to serve the Club together with them. Last but not least, I would like to mention our Summer Party on the 29th of May with special appearances by the Hermes House Band and a club DJ; it promises to be another great evening at the Club. The theme for the evening is “White-Out”. Tickets can be purchased by both members and non-members at the Club reception. I hope to welcome you all at the party! Best regards, Nienke Nauta-Kuipers President
CLUB MANAGEMENT
GM’S MESSAGE Dear Members, Spring is in the air and the Club is bursting with energy. Much-needed renovations are being carried out, we are organising great events, promoting our Club and looking for new ways to generate revenue. Recently, we had a successful AGM where members voiced concerns about some aspects of the Club - one such area was its maintenance. We heard your comments and we will certainly follow up on them as best as we can. As you have probably noticed, we have commenced with some major maintenance projects and, last week, the roof works were finished. We are happy that we now have a new roof over a large area over our ‘head’. Next up is waterproofing certain other areas and repairing various gutters. After this has finished we can continue or commence with other (indoor) repairs and renovations. Unfortunately, some of these works may still cause some noise or other inconveniences but we will try to keep the nuisance down to a minimum. We will also initiate some projects where members can join in and help with the renovations. Meanwhile, we are gearing up for a highlight on our annual events calendar and that is the Summer Party! This year’s theme is White-Out, so start shopping or rummaging through your closets for a glamorous white outfit to wear during the party on May 29th. Please invite your (non-member) friends to join in and have a great time! It is going to be fantastic! Tickets are now on sale at the reception. On the first weekend of June, we will host the inaugural Kids ZOAT. The ZOAT (South East Asian Tournament) is a well-known hockey tournament for adults in the region but the Dutch Youth Hockey has now organised a ZOAT for kids aged 10-14. Teams from Singapore, Hong Kong, Brunei, Shanghai and Kuala Lumpur will compete at the Hollandse Club during a twoday tournament for the Kids ZOAT trophy. Speaking of children…the Club prides itself on having a very relaxed and informal atmosphere, however, in recent months and weeks we have had several incidents involving children of various age groups either misbehaving around the Club or putting themselves in dangerous situations. Parents please keep an eye on your children and make sure they know their boundaries especially when they are old enough to stay at the Club on their own. Parents of young children - please don’t let them wander off alone. Your children should have fun at the Club but if they do not know their boundaries it’s not conducive to a good Club environment. While your children are enjoying themselves, we are also hosting corporate and private functions, we have guests in the Club Rooms and often we conduct Club tours with potential new members. I am positive that we can all enjoy the Club together but let’s be courteous and considerate. Please convey this to your children. Further down in the magazine, we have a short quiz for children to test their knowledge of some basic Club rules. Let’s see how much they and you know! In the coming weeks, we have a lot more exciting events lined up so please check out the events calendar, which has moved to the centre of the magazine. After reading the magazine, you can take it out and stick it on your fridge or noticeboard for your reference. We have also placed an events calendar in the lobby, so please have a look. You can scan the QR code with your phone (after you installed the QR-code app) and then you will automatically be directed to the event information on our website.

On the 23rd of March the founding father of independent Singapore and the world’s longest serving prime minister (1959 - 1990), Lee Kuan Yew (also known as LKY), passed away at the age of 91 after a brief illness. In his book Hard Truths to Keep Singapore Going, he said “I have spent my life, so much of it, building up this country. There’s nothing more that I need to do. At the end of the day, what have I got? A successful Singapore. What have I given up? My life.” Harry Lee Kuan Yew was born into a well-to-do Chinese family in Singapore, then still a British colony. He lived through the Japanese occupation of Singapore, studying at Raffles Institution and Raffles College (which later became NUS), and went on to the UK to read law at Cambridge University. There he earned a double starred first class honours and was then admitted to the bar in London. He married Kwa Geok Choo, herself a Cambridge law scholar and Raffles Institution and Raffles College classmate (and the only one to top his scores), and they later returned to Singapore where they founded the law firm Lee & Lee with his brother, Lee Kim Yew. LKY left them to build the firm as he became more involved in politics. In 1954 Lee had co-founded the People’s Action Party (PAP) and campaigned for independence from Britain, having felt badly let down by her surrender of Singapore during the Second World War. In June 1959, he became the first prime minister of an independent Singapore and set about modernising the infrastructure and introducing reforms in education and industrialisation. In 1963, Singapore joined Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak to form the Federation of Malaysia but in 1965 left the Federation. Lee was then left to carve a place in the world for a Singapore with very few natural resources or defensive capabilities. He initiated this by inviting foreign investment into Singapore, introducing National Service and eliminating corruption. He shepherded the transition of Singapore from a third world nation to a first, with a corresponding rise in living standards and a strong economy. He had his critics, but declared: “Between being loved and being feared, I have always believed Machiavelli was right. If nobody is afraid of me, I’m meaningless.” LKY held firmly to his vision for Singapore and leaves as his legacy a prosperous country with a tiger economy, at the forefront of Asia and the world in fields as diverse as finance, technology and education, with its course well set for the future. Kwa Geok Choo passed away in 2010 after over 60 years of marriage, devastating LKY. His health began to fail, and in February 2015 he was admitted to hospital in his final illness. On the 23rd of March, Singaporeans awoke to the news that Lee Kuan Yew, their guiding hand for so many years, had passed away during the night. LKY and Kwa Geok Choo leave 3 children, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Dr Lee Wei Ling and Brigadier General Lee Hsien Yang, and 7 grandchildren. The Hollandse Club and its members join the nation of Singapore in extending their condolences to Lee Kuan Yew’s family.

MEET THE NEW MEMBERS OF THE MAIN COMMITTEE! Anneloes van Haaren My name is Anneloes van Haaren. I arrived in Singapore in August 2008 together with my husband, Wouter Ankersmit, and our three children. We became members of the Hollandse Club upon our arrival and we love to spend quality time at the Club’s tropical premises. We come to the Club to socialise with friends and to play (a lot of) tennis. We enjoy the friendly and helpful environment. I have joined the Main Committee as Vice President and my focus is Human Resources. In this position, and together with the other Main Committee members, I strive to contribute towards a lively, viable and service-friendly Club. Before joining the Main Committee, I was a member of the Finance Committee and the Tennis Committee at the Hollandse Club. I have previously worked in the financial sector, both in the private and public domain. In addition, I have been self-employed as a personal and executive coach for several years.
Jan-Willem Buist My name is Jan-Willem Buist. I have been living in Singapore with my wife and two daughters for almost three and a half years now. We moved to Singapore in December 2011 and have been members of the Hollandse Club since January 2012. What immediately attracted us, when we first visited the Club, was the relaxed atmosphere, the friendly staff and the nice swimming pool area. You could say this pool area is the centre of the Club, at least, it has been for us for a long time. I have spent many hours there watching the kids attend their swimming classes. But it has also become the place where we meet and catch up with other friends and parents. Coming from a finance background, I joined the Finance Committee last year and when Wietske decided to step down, I volunteered to take up the position of Treasurer. Those of you who attended the AGM are aware of the fact that we have a challenging time ahead of us, with the renovation of the Terrace, the upgrade of our ICT system and developing plans to revitalize the club. In the meantime, we also need to remain aware of costs. I am looking forward to contributing to all this and hope to see you at the Club.
Anne Zwart My name is Anne Zwart and, together with my husband, Jarno Timmerman, and our two daughters, I moved to Singapore 18 months ago. We have also been members of the Hollandse Club for that period of time. At the Club, we really appreciate the opportunity to meet people, play sports and join some of the nice events. In the years before our move to Singapore, I worked as a lawyer in insurance and liability, and later at the District Court of Utrecht, where I specialised in family/inheritance law. I hope to be able to support the Main Committee from a legal point of view, updating the legal framework and helping out with the many contracts that the Club has to deal with. But most of all, I would like to help the Main Committee and the staff to improve and preserve the Club for all members, so we can all keep enjoying our lovely Club. STAFF UPDATE
LONG SERVICE AWARDS
Congratulations!
Mr Rashid, who heads our housekeeping department, received a long service award for working at the Hollandse Club for five years. Congratulations! Mr Foo works in the pantry of the main bar. He received a long service award for 10 years of dedicated service at the Hollandse Club. Congratulations!
NEW STAFF
We welcome Trecia Pang as our new Office Manager and HR executive. Trecia supports the Management Team and is responsible for HR at the Club. A warm welcome to Habeebah Beevi who joins our housekeeping team. Miss Habeebah will be working alongside Miss Hadjrah as Puppy & Juniors’ Room attendant.
FAREWELLS
J ade, one of our receptionists, resigned to join her husband abroad. We wish them a good start in their new home country. Shortly after the AGM, we said goodbye to Regina Sim, our Administrative Assistant. After many years of dedicated service to the Cub she decided to resign and spend more time in Johor Bahru playing her beloved game of golf. A warm thank you to Regina for taking good care of the staff and the Club over the past years and we wish her all the best.
MEET MARILOU GROOT NIBBELINK
Our new Sports & Events Manager!
We welcome Marilou, who has taken over from Marjon as our Sports and Events Manager at the Club. Knowing that her husband was to be relocated to Singapore this year to open an Asian office for his company, and not wanting to be idle after working full-time in the Netherlands, Marilou applied for the position in September last year. She joined the Club on the 2nd February, having landed in Singapore in January. For Marilou, this is her first overseas posting (apart from Germany, which, she says, doesn’t really count) and she is very excited about it. Not surprisingly, these first couple of months she has found it difficult being away from friends and family, but she likes Singapore. She is enjoying new experiences and meeting new people, and appreciates the variety of cultures and food that Singapore offers, as well as the ease of travel through Asia - though she hasn’t had the opportunity to do that, yet. The couple are outgoing and have been exploring various restaurants, bars and festivals here. As Sports and Events Manager for the Hollandse Club, in conjunction with the relevant Committees, Marilou has organised all kinds of activities, such as tournaments for different sports and family events like the Easter brunch and the King’s Day celebrations. She wants to introduce new events to the Club and tries to come up with new ideas, such as workshops, lectures and parties, which target specific groups (for instance children/adults/families/just ladies or just men). However, she feels that people are more cautious about signing up for them than for those they are used to. She believes the Magazine provides a good forum to explain these new events - so keep reading! Marilou is enjoying the opportunity that the Club gives her to work with children, such as at the recent Easter brunch. She finds it refreshing that children can just be themselves. I am sure Marilou will become as familiar a face around the Club as Marjon was, and we look forward to working with her.
We have several job vacancies at the Club at the moment. Please check the notice board for more details and forward the information to your friends. Members are excluded from applying for any of the jobs. 10 HOLLANDSE CLUB | WWW.HOLLANDSECLUB.ORG.SG

QUINTUPLE RECORD BREAKER! By Nina Gunasingham
On the 1st of March, aquaDucks held the annual Club Swimming Championships. My boys persuaded me to enter and swim the family race with them, despite the fact that I haven’t swum since the four-day event six months ago. On the day, a great team spirit pervaded the atmosphere, and everyone did a wonderful job, from the organisers and the Club staff through to the parents who helped with time keeping, and, of course, the swimmers themselves and the audience that cheered them on. It amazed me to see swimmers as young as six tackling the individual medley. Congratulations to all the swimmers on a great effort! The day, however, belonged to Naomi Huth, who broke the Club records in all the events she could have - and did entered; breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle, backstroke and individual medley. Her mum, Jenny, remarked to me halfway through the events, “I told her she had to break at least one record, but I wasn’t expecting three!” Naomi turned 15 in February, and so just qualified for the women’s events by a few weeks. She told me she started swimming at the age of six, initially taking aquaDucks’ parent-child classes with her dad and Coach Nancy (who taught many of the kids who have grown up swimming at the Club, including my two) and continuing on with Coach Nancy and Coach Michelle. Although she changed swimming clubs and became faster (she represented her new club at national level) Naomi returned to swim for the Hollandse Club in the Neptune League, where she finds a good balance of training, team spirit and a welcoming atmosphere. She enjoys it so much that in March she completed a two-week internship with aquaDucks at the Hollandse Club and SICC, teaching children to swim. Coming into the championships this year, she knew she was in good shape and was hoping to break some records, which is nothing new to her as she’s been doing that since she started swimming. However, she was absolutely thrilled to take all five, as well as breaking her own personal bests. And just in case you thought it was safe to go back into the water, Naomi thinks her sister, Noelle, who has just turned 12 and won one silver and four gold medals, could be even faster! As far as I’m concerned, I’ll stick with the mothers’ race; these youngsters can’t qualify for that for a while yet.

BEAUTIFUL BANGKOK By Teun Leenen
Bangkok
is a big city with 12 to 15 million inhabitants, but also clean. There are lots of fun things to do, like a Dutch bicycle tour around Bangkok. You can also go to the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew. In Bangkok they have some beautiful hotels like The Emerald Hotel and also the Chatrium Hotel; this is the hotel where we stayed. In Bangkok they are football crazy! The number one club in Bangkok is Manchester United (that’s the club that I support as well). They play football everywhere - on the streets, at the temples and even on boats (just kidding). In Bangkok they sell everything. They sell food and toys and lots of soap. You can also do a fish spa there. The food is super-good. In every bush or corner there’s something to find. At the airport in Bangkok, they have really good and fast services.

ARTIST IN FOCUS - APRIL: MARIJKE BOHM
My name is Marijke Rombeek-Bohm and I have lived in Singapore with my husband and two children
for six years now. We love Singapore for its climate, proximity to many exciting places and its high quality of life. We are still enjoying living here every single day. I have spent the past 15 years travelling and living in countries throughout Africa, the Middle East and Asia, together with my husband who works in the airline industry. To live in very diverse countries with their own unique colours and cultures is really fascinating for me and I love trying to discover the soul and spirit of each place. I am inspired by exploring different neighbourhoods, wandering through them, discovering small alleys, smelling the different smells, trying different foods and flavours, and meeting many different people. During these 15 years abroad, I have become a fervent photographer and I have never regretted that we grabbed the opportunity of moving overseas. Through my photography, I document my impressions and experiences, trying to capture vibrancy, atmosphere and culture. As I feel that every place has so many different faces and it is hard to capture the spirit of a place in one photo, I started creating collage style art works. Combining photos in collage style or in layers is, for me, the perfect way to achieve what I want to get across. This hobby has proven to be very addictive and a few years ago I decided to make it my work and started MB Art-MemoryBoards. In my current work, I focus on daily life in Singapore: its diversity and differences between the old and new Singapore. Please have a look at a small selection of my work at the Hollandse Club. I hope you will enjoy it. You can find more of my work on my website www.memoryboards.info.
ARTIST IN FOCUS - MAY: JOSÉ SINTNICOLAAS The opening of the exhibition from Jose Sintnicolaas is on 1 May from 4-6pm in the Tradewinds bar.
A few years ago we moved to Shanghai where I started my second career in visual arts as a painter. I just finished the Art Academy in Belgium and could follow my dream just dedicating my time to art. I love to work from intuition and use mixed media in my works. My main subjects are inspired by my love for nature and culture but also my worry about how people behave and destroy the planet. Living in Singapore since last year September gives me another boost of inspiration. 20 HOLLANDSE CLUB | WWW.HOLLANDSECLUB.ORG.SG

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK:
KAMPONG BUANGKOK By Claire Wintraecken
This Off the Beaten Track is a journey into Singapore’s past. I went with my kids to learn about Singapore’s rich, historical heritage by visiting two totally different sights of Singapore. First, we went to the award-winning historical museum on Sentosa (yeah, I know, not exactly off the beaten track). “Images of Singapore” offers a fun and entertaining glimpse into the chronological history of Singapore through Malaysian rule, British colonialism, Japanese occupation and the post-colonialist era under Singapore’s
22 HOLLANDSE CLUB | WWW.HOLLANDSECLUB.ORG.SG
FEATURES first prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew; all of this wrapped up in 45 minutes. The kids really enjoyed the museum and, since it was a rainy part of the day, I thought it was a nice refreshing hour spent. Back in the car I asked my kids, ever wondered what the kampong days felt like, without a time-travel machine? So we embarked on our next little journey; we went to Kampong Buangkok. I had heard about this spot in Singapore through several articles written about this unique place. Built in 1956, the kampong is still a privately owned piece of land. Kampong Lorong Buangkok sits on 1.22 hectares (about the size of three football fields) and was purchased by a traditional Chinese medicine seller in 1956. It was passed down to his daughter, Sng Mui Hong, who is the landlord today. Kampong is the Malay word for village and, at one time, Singapore was dotted with kampongs. When Singapore split from Malaysia in the early 1960s, the government implemented a number of policies to rapidly modernise the newly indecent city-state. One of them was to move all the people from Malaysianstyle kampong villages to the high-rise public housing apartments. Somehow, Kampong Lorong Buangkok was spared from the bulldozer and survived. But for how long? Through the trees, you can glimpse the HDB flats that will represent the future for the people of Kampong Buangkok. Kampong Lorong Buangkok feels like a living museum and is a remnant of what Singapore used to be like. Coming from Sentosa, it definitely felt like we had stepped through a time-machine when we arrived. The stark contrast of modernity and traditional kampong-living is very unique. The place itself is very peaceful and has a culture of its own. A few residents still call it home: 20 Malay families and 10 Chinese families as well as their dogs and cats wandering around. The wooden houses are built in traditional Malay style, with the zinc roofs surrounded by big,
lush gardens. The mess of electric cables suspended overhead is another rare sight. My kids were a bit skeptical about this outing, not knowing what there was to see or do. But it was a good way of getting a conversation going: how Singapore looked in the old days; why these families like the kampong style of living; should the kampong stay like it is or should the land be developed just like the rest of Singapore. Those were the topics of conversation around the dinner table that evening. The land is slated under the Urban Redevelopment Authorithy’s Masterplan to be replaced by housing, schools and roads. Under Singapore law, the government can buy the land at any time. There is no question that Singapore needs the land. The only question is how much longer Kampong Buangkok will be able to resist the encroachment of urban Singapore. It may seem a bit ironic since we are featuring this kampong, but please keep in mind that there are still families living inside the kampong, so please respect their privacy when you visit. How to get to Lorong Buangkok: Kampong Buangkok is located off Gerald Drive, which is located off Yio Chu Kang Road. If coming by car, look out for the handwritten, white sign pointing to the Surau. By public transport, from Serangoon MRT take bus 103 and get down at the bus stop that is in front of the Church of St. Vincent de Paul and walk towards Gerald Drive.
only question “is The how much longer
Kampong Buangkok will be able to resist the encroachment of urban Singapore.”

GUEST OF HONOUR
A Traditional Javanese Village Wedding
By Karien van Ditzhuijzen
Together we bend over the phone, but the map
is not of much help. It shows a muddle of small roads without any names, landmarks, or anything else recognisable. This area does not have names or numbers. In vain we search for any pointers. Finally, we agree on meeting Uncle by the sugar cane factory tomorrow. He will lead the way on his scooter to the village, half an hour away. We are the first ‘white people’ to visit our domestic worker’s village in Central Java, and everyone stares and smiles. Uncle stares into my five-year-old daughter’s eyes and asks what we put in them to make that icy blue colour. Little girls point at my height, all six foot of it, and long legs, giggling that I look like a Barbie doll. The whole family has come together in our helper’s yellow house, and a gaggle of aunties and uncles spoil our kids with boiled soybeans, krupuk, sugary sweets and cuddles. The kids comply and eat their fill. The lunch we are served, our first home-cooked meal in weeks, is the best we have had in Java. My favourite crispy fried tempeh, pecel vegetables with peanut sauce, tapioca leaves in coconut milk, krupuk, and chicken for the kids. That morning one of the 24 HOLLANDSE CLUB | WWW.HOLLANDSECLUB.ORG.SG
aunties tried to catch a kampong chicken roaming around the house for us. It fled into a tree and she had to buy one at the market instead. The music down the road lures us to the main event of the day: a traditional village wedding. One of our helper’s friends is getting married. When she heard we were in the area, she insisted that we come along. The kids are dressed in their best batiks, and I in the best, and cleanest, dress I could muster after our twenty-day road trip across Indonesia. There is a band, a traditional gamelan orchestra, three professional singers, and a sound system that could easily blast across the sea to Singapore. Many guests sit
FEATURES waiting; women in colourful kebaya’s on one side, men in batik shirts and black peci caps on the other. The ceremony has not yet started, and we are whisked into the bride’s neighbour’s house to greet the happy couple, just in time to see the traditional Javanese wedding make-up being applied. Javanese wedding make-up is very elaborate, with intricate black patterns painted across the forehead. The bride’s black make-up crosses over from her forehead to her dark hair and ornate headdress, decorated with golden pins and fragrant garlands of jasmine flowers. The groom looks as impressive as his bride, both dressed in matching turquoise robes, and his makeup is only slightly less pronounced than hers.
Luckily for me, halfway through the formal ceremony, a lady comes over to invite me to come and see the kitchen. Bring your camera, she points and smiles. Behind the scenes are as many people as in front. These are the villagers, as Javanese weddings are a village affair, and everyone helps out. Dozens of ladies cook, scoop and prepare food, which gets served out by lads in matching pink shirts. Everyone smiles from the excitement of me dropping by, and I need to taste all the delicacies. In the corner, more ladies wrap leftover food in djati leafs, which will be handed to leaving guests. Back at the wedding, the official ceremony gets wrapped up by the couple having their pictures taken, and then leaving to get changed into another stunning outfit. Meanwhile, the singers entertain the guests, and food is served. By now I have eaten more than I normally would in a weekend, but it just keeps on coming. The bride and groom return dressed in gold and, while more pictures are taken, some of the guests have a go at the microphone. They coax me to sing a tune as well, but I shake my head, grinning. It would not be pretty.
After this, it is time for the official proceedings to start. At first, I was uncertain whether we would really be welcome, since we don’t know the happy couple, but we are quickly put at ease (and slightly embarrassed) as we are ushered in as guests of honour, with special seats reserved next to the bride’s parents. During the lengthy ceremony, we will be showered with sweet tea, food and snacks. After our amazing lunch, we have to force ourselves to be polite and eat yet another offering of sweets. The bride’s house has been remodelled with intricate wood carvings and wooden thrones, and is decorated with bamboo, fruit and flower ornaments. The bride and groom, their parents and guests of honour (us) sit in the house, the rest of the guests are outside, where they can see the ceremony through the sliding doors, and on a large screen, as a professional-looking cameraman films every single detail. The wedding planner walks around, directing all the guests in their roles, whipping the bride into shape if she slacks from her upright position for just a minute. The kids are getting restless, too; there is a lot to see but after an hour, all the bling to look at and sweets to eat lose their lustre.
When the wedding is over, we press thick red packets into the hands of the bride, happy and thankful for this experience. The bride thanks us, smiling through her make-up. We did not understand much of the official parts of this day, but the sense of community in this village, where everyone pitches in to make the celebration a success, is impressive. On our way out we try, without success, to recline offerings of more food wrapped up in djati leaves and plastic bags from the village women. Later, on our walk around the village, we encounter the groom on his scooter. We struggle to recognise him at first in a simple t-shirt and without his makeup. He grins shyly, and we wave him goodbye. Later, they will go to his village to celebrate again and enjoy a few days together before the bride goes back to her job in Singapore.

KING
By Claire Wintraecken
On 30 April 2013, Willem-Alexander succeeded his mother, Beatrix, to become the first Dutch king for 123 years. He is the youngest monarch in Europe and has pledged to be a ‘21st century king’ and not a so-called ‘protocol fetishists’. The Netherlands celebrated King’s Day for the first time in 2014. In honour of the birth of Queen Wilhelmina on 31 August 1885, the country organised celebrations and the Queen’s Day tradition was born. After Wilhelmina’s daughter, Juliana, succeeded to the throne in 1949, the date was changed to 30 April in accordance with the new queen’s birthday. When she became queen, Princess Beatrix chose to retain the date in honour of her mother but, as of 2014, the name was changed from Queen’s Day to King’s Day. The date also changed from 30 April to 27 April, which is the birthday of King Willem-Alexander. In 2014, the first official King’s Day was held on 26 April 2014 (because 27 April was a Sunday). The name and date may have changed slightly but the festive spirit remains. The royal family will visit a town or municipality in the Netherlands as a part of the celebration, as The King and Queen want to encourage people to show off their city/ region in their own way. On 27 April, Dordrecht will set the tone for a different celebration of King’s Day: it is the first municipality to organise a ‘new look’ King’s Day. The traditional long walking tour will not be included, due to security reasons, and the visit will be shorter than normal. For the first time, Princess Beatrix will not be participating in this year’s King’s Day.
White Gold - the Vegetable of Kings By Claire Wintraecken
To most people, asparagus is a green spear with a violettinged tip. But, for me, asparagus is something quite different: a pale ivory stalk with a refined flavour that has earned nicknames such as “edible ivory” or “vegetable of kings” or simply “white gold”. It is my favorite spring dish! The regal status of asparagus - the green kind - dates back to antiquity. Roman emperors were mad for it, and France’s King Louis XIV even grew it in hothouses so he was able to enjoy the vegetable year-round. However, the history of the white asparagus is shorter and the French claim to have cultivated the white asparagus (as early as the Renaissance) and soon the practice spread to Germany and certain parts of the Netherlands. Other than colour, there is no difference between green and white asparagus; what makes the white asparagus so special is the fact that it is grown in complete sun deprivation. Growers cover spears in mounded dirt or black plastic tunnels so that the asparagus is not exposed to light. This prevents the asparagus turning green and results in a taste that is sweeter and more tender than his green brother. Asparagus grows best in sandy soil. On about 5,000 acres in the provinces of Limburg and Noord Brabant, you will see people picking spears daily during the eight-week harvest period. During the harvest months of May and June, there are even a variety of festivities around the asparagus, and almost every restaurant features the tasty vegetable prominently on their menu.
My favourite spring dish is, without a doubt, cooked white aspargus drizzled with a simple, warm hollandaise sauce. It pairs beautifully with sliced boiled eggs, some ham sprinkled with fresh parsley, and boiled new potatoes served with melted butter. White asparagus is considered a spring delicacy and is only on the menu seasonally in the Netherlands, usually from late April to June. Do not let it come and go before you get a chance to try it this year. White asparagus will be on the menu in June at the Hollandse Club. So enjoy en eet smakelijk! 26 HOLLANDSE CLUB | WWW.HOLLANDSECLUB.ORG.SG
BLACK & WHITE TOUR
By Netherlands Charity Association Photo by Evelyne van Overveld
O n Wednesday 18th March, 30 people gathered at the Hollandse Club, excited about what they were about to participate in: the one and only Black & White Tour, organized by Hester Calkhoven (Executive Homes Real Estate Agency) and the Netherlands Charity Association (NCA). Surely you have seen the black-and-white houses in Singapore. The walls were painted white with a mixture that sounded very much like a cake recipe, except instead of flour they used crushed seashells. The wood was blackened by using creosote, an oily substance that kept the insects out and the wood healthy. We visited five residences all over Singapore and we were welcomed warmly at all of them. It is no small feat to have 30 people trotting through your house, but none of the hostesses seemed to mind. Thanks to Anna, Jiska, Anne, Dorothee and Tara for their hospitality. What became clear during the morning was that there are many different styles of black-and-white houses in Singapore and Diana Chua, our guide, did a fantastic job explaining the differences and the reasons behind them. She also gave us some great stories and gossip from back then, and in those surroundings it was like history coming alive. NCA wants to thank Hester Calkhoven for the great effort of putting this tour together. Apart from organising the tour, Executive Homes sponsored it too, so that all the proceeds could go to NCA. And the best news for all of you who couldn’t join us this time - Hester has offered to sponsor another tour next year!

Lecture by Eowyn Crisfield
‘Raising Bilingual Children’ Tuesday, 24th February 2015 Educational specialist for bilingualism, Eowyn Crisfield has visit the Club to provide a more-than-interesting lecture about raising bilingual kids. A theme that faces many expatriated families! The Brabant Room was completely packed with both members and non-members who appreciated the tips and tricks to promote success of bilingualism, learned the benefits and pitfalls of bilingualism and enjoyed the recognizable experiences Eowyn shared with them. At the end, hopefully they all left with a clear understanding of their role in their children’s bilingual development and with strategies to be successful in helping their kids achieve bilingualism.
3-Days
Photoshop Workshop for beginners 25th - 27th February 2015 On the day, a group of ladies came together for a 3 day beginner Photoshop course with instructor Connie. Step by step some of the endless possibilities of Photoshop were being shown and, more importantly, practised. Besides basic enhancement of photos this included trees disappearing, snowboarders being moved from snowcapped mountains to the desert, fun effects in photos and much more. Often deep sighs or the words “I’m stuck, can you help me out Connie?’ were heard, but in the end everyone was happy to have participated and to have learned so much.
The
Amazing ToyBox Show Sunday, 8th March 2015

The guys from the Amazing Toy Box sure know how to entertain a younger crowd! Cheerful music, silly dances and funny jokes and you have a winning recipe for an hour of kids’ entertainment. The children simply loved Mark De Silva and Reuben Tupaz from the Amazing Toy Box. Within minutes, the children were dancing and singing along with them. It was a pity we didn’t have more children attend the show, but the ones who did certainly had a blast.

Easter
Brunch
Saturday, 28th March 2015 A group of kids gathered on the 28th of March in the Brabant Room to take part in an Easter art workshop provided by Abrakadoodle. Today’s assignment: draw as many eggs as you like on canvas and paint them in the most beautiful colours! And that’s what the kids did! Some chose to design one big egg, others made several eggs in different sizes. As all children used their own creativity, each painting became unique and piece by piece pretty artworks were made!
Sunday, 5th April 2015 Over 100 members celebrated Easter with us and each other on Sunday 5th of April. Around 11am the nicely decorated Indoor and Outdoor Lounge began to fill up and children directly started to create their own Easter Bunny bread. After we put the bunnies in the oven, kids could hunt for the hidden eggs. Each child searched for a big plastic egg which had candy in it and, of course, one boiled egg to paint afterwards! As the kids were occupied with the different activities, parents calmly enjoyed the nicely prepared food and drinks provided at the buffet.
Lecture by
StyleTribute.com
Tuesday, 21st April 2015 All ladies who participated gathered in the Brabant Room to join the lecture given by Stephanie Crespin about setting up a business in Singapore. All ladies who particpated are thinking of starting their own company, so they were very interested in Stephanie’s story and experiences. Tw o y e a r s a g o S t e p h a n i e m o v e d t o Singapore with the dream to start up her own website in second-hand luxury fashion.Since buying second-hand clothes isn’t that well known in Asia, she saw this as a gap in the market which she could fill up. And so StyleTribute.com was founded; an online luxury marketplace for buying and selling authentic second-hand designer fashion. Everyone that has a lot of fashion hanging in their closets, but unfortunately doesn’t wear it anymore, can sell it on the website to women that are really keen on buying designer items for a really good price!
Photos by Inge & Marilou
After all it was a very inspiring, interactive talk whereby Stephanie shared her story and the attendees got tips and tricks to help them start up their own business. Furthermore they got even more excited when they got offered a private shopping session with StyleTribute’s personal shopper! WWW.HOLLANDSECLUB.ORG.SG | HOLLANDSE CLUB 39

SWIMMING
Dear Members,
March was a super-busy month full of tournaments and other activities. Neptune League On the 16th March, we had the Neptune League at the Tanglin Club. The pool is 33 metres so instead of 25 and 50 metres, the races were 33 and 66 metres. A lot of kids moved up in their age group and, with the extra length of the pool, it was tough but the Dolphins did really well and we got 22 1st places. Great job, Dolphins! Club Championships On Sunday 1st March, we had the Club Championships. 145 members were going for gold in their age category or trying to beat the Club record. Many swimmers nearly succeeded in getting the Club record; a couple of times, the swimmers only came in 0.2 of a second too short. But there were six new Club records. Naomi Huth broke all records for the women’s over 15s; let’s see if she can break her own record next year. Good job, Naomi! The last race was the family race, and the results were: 1. Desaulles 2. Bakker 3. Smouter
1:08.09 1:08.64 1:10.71
ABC Swimming Awards On 22nd March, we had the ABC Swimming Awards (Dutch awards). Almost 50 kids came to the pool and showed their best swimming to get their award. Great job, everyone. Snorkelling Camp During the school holidays in March and April, we organised a snorkelling camp. Seven children joined in and got their snorkelling award. Swimmer of the Month The Swimmer of the Month of March is Theo Stevens: he came for training 17 times. Great job, Theo - you have won a Delfina swim bag. Helpers’ Swimming Tuesday 24th March was the last lesson for helpers. Four of them received a safety award; they can do basic strokes and know how to handle an emergency. Great job, girls! The next round will start in September.

SQUASH A mixed bag to report this time ‘round. Our Vets II and E grade team continue to face some challenging times in the National Squash League. The Vets II struggle because the powers that be decided that the matches should be held on a Friday and, of course, this is eating into valuable weekend drinking time, which, of course, makes finding even four willing players rather challenging; finding four willing players able to give a good showing even more so. However, perhaps the worm has turned as we move into the second half of the season with the addition of our Daniel II, another Quebecan, who, like his illustrious namesake, does not like to lose. The E team has found life equally challenging as we face wave after wave of 15-year-olds who quite clearly are slumming it in the Es. We did win our last encounter against Noble and by the time this report comes out we would have introduced our other secret weapon, a Mr John Yates, to the mix. With John playing at one, Manoj at two (if he manages to turn up on time or even the right day), Alan/Jonathan/Wendall at three and Daniel II at four, we should end up the season in a more respectable position. We then move onto our Vets I team and some might say that it is down to some inspirational leadership (well, only one person would say that – Kim Hine), whereas the reality is that we have a very strong team playing in the Vets I section. The squad oozes talent and the strength in depth is a luxury we have not had before. I will not be overly positive because there is still a way to go and I usually have the kiss of death in these matters, but we should see a good season for our elite (ish) players. Currently sitting top of the Vets I division but we have some strong opponents ahead over the next few weeks, which should give us a more accurate look at where we will be at the end of the campaign.

The C team is also putting on a strong performance captained by our Aussie/Brit, James Spalding. A tough section to thrive in and, having won their first three matches, they have recently hit a bit of a bad patch against some very strong competition. Nevertheless, we expect great things of them for the remainder of the season. Aside from the NSL, we will have our rescheduled Veteran’s Open competition sometime in early June and we look forward to a good turnout from both our HC members and the wider Singaporean squash fraternity. The Veteran’s Open is always an excellent opportunity to see that age is but a number and that number is around 30 points before the players systemically crumble and fall. Rather than the best man/woman winning, it’s generally the last man/woman winning. In all seriousness, the Vets Open is an excellent competition with participants from every standard participating, so if you feel in any way inclined to have a go then please remember that we should be holding it on the 5/6/7th June, schedule permitting. On top of this, we have the Hollandse Club handicap tournament, which created some upsets the last time we put this on with Crouching Tiger, Sitting Bull, Colin winning in the final against the Quintessential Quebecan. Hopefully we’ll have some more of the same this time ‘round. Last but not least we will look to stage the Hollandse Club Year End Squash Championship from the 19-21 June. Another stupendous event that will see some truly inspiring athletes at the top of their game show us how the beautiful sport is played. And if you believe that, you’ll believe anything. Rest assured though that there will be participants from across the skills spectrum so sign up for the fun and, of course, the beer and BBQ at the end of it! TENNIS Youth Spring Tournament The Spring Tennis Tournament took place on Saturday, 14th March 2015. We had a full house with 61 participants and 287 scheduled matches. The 6 to 10-year-olds played in the afternoon and the older kids at the beginning of the evening. They all played in pools based on age and playing ability so everybody had great matches! Even when the rain started in the evening, the older kids had a lot of fun on the courts. It was a great and successful event. We could only make this happen with the help of Scott (Savitar), Yurni (HC sports executive) and, of course, our young tennis talents from the Hollandse Club! Many thanks to you all. COACHES CORNER: LEARN TO ANTICIPATE “Triple Vision” Anticipation is a vital part of your tennis game and a key ability of a good tennis player. Anticipation is the ability to predict, with success, where your opponent will hit the ball. In essence, staying one step ahead of your opponent. Naturally, the more you play, the better you’ll learn to anticipate and improve your ability to read your opponent’s next move and thus enable you to react faster. A less experienced player may not read the ball as soon as it has been hit, but only when it reaches the net, thus each shot is somewhat unexpected, resulting in a slower reaction time to the shot and possibly missing or not making the shot. If this happens to you, here are a few anticipation tips to watch for: Your opponent – what type of shots are they hitting, what spin, how hard, size of swing? Do they have an easy or difficult shot? The ball – where will the ball land? Is it spinning, high, low, soft or hard? The more you study the ball flight, the better you anticipate. You are aware of what your opponent has done and what’s going to happen after the bounce. The court – be very conscious of where you are positioned and where your opponent is positioned. This will help you place the ball and also put yourself in a better position. In time, with practice, your “Triple Vision” will develop and you’ll learn to anticipate faster and react faster to win that next Match Point! Good luck!
