EDITOR'S MESSAGE Welcome to Members both old and new, as many of us slowly trickle back from holidays. We have lots of stories from around the world in this month’s issue, including some from our junior reporters, who share their holiday experiences with us. Claire and I visit some of our local and overseas Reciprocal Clubs and Off the Beaten Track reports from the Sports Hub. Dear Members, Welcome back and a warm welcome to our new Members too! We hope you all enjoyed your holidays throughout the world and brought some beautiful memories and souvenirs back home. For those who stayed in Singapore, we hope the rainy days and quieter city center were also refreshing and your children loved our holiday camps. At the Club, in the months of July and August we have been active with different renovation projects. As you will probably notice, we painted several parts in and around the Club, our Wi-Fi and IT systems have been upgraded, we hung new nets at courts 1 and 2 and did a thorough summer cleaning in our office. We ended up throwing away more than 6 containers filled with old documents, dating back to the mid eighties! We are also pleased that on the 1st of August Jacky Stevens has taken over our Food & Beverage facilities and opened Jaxs’ Bistro & Pizzeria. Jacky has opened numerous successful eateries and bars in Singapore. As of this summer she decided to take up the challenge to bring our Food & Beverage facilities to a higher level. From September onwards there will be a wide choice of dishes on the menu varying between Western and Local cuisine. Everything is freshly made in house from scratch and the homemade pizzas are signature! Of course you will still be able to enjoy Dutch bitterballen as well. Feedback is always much appreciated so do share your comments and compliments directly with Jacky or with our Management. Together with our events team and partners we have set-up many exciting events such as live music nights, the popular September fair, comedy nights, and we opened up some new sports classes such as Yoga, Pilates, Contemporary dance and Ballet, Judo, Karate and Mum in Balance classes. We will be running trials during the entire month of September. Behind the scene, we are finalizing our Marketing Strategy, working on further development & upgrading plans and are in the midst of developing an interior design strategy to revamp the pool area, the main lobby, several meeting & changing rooms and the staff’ office. Our aim is to create a refreshing, inspiring, resort style setting that has that warm welcoming feeling everyone is looking for. We would like to consult our Members to get the best makeover for our beloved Club so please keep an eye on the online & live possibilities to share your opinion. The energy at the Club is vibrant and we like it! We hope to see you on Saturday September 10th for our welcome back party. It will be a fun afternoon and evening for the whole family with live music, activities and great food! Marte van der Hoeven Annemiek Kuijsten President General Manager

Long Service Awards at the Hollandse Club By Nina Gunasingham

The Staff of the Hollandse Club, whether on the frontline or behind the scenes, make our Club the family-friendly retreat that it is. Some have been here for many years and are part of the fabric of the Club. Khong Mun Tat Mun Tat comes from Ipoh, Malaysia, where he and Lai Yee were classmates, and he is the fourth child of five. I get the impression that as the only boy, his sisters somewhat spoiled him! He came to Singapore eight years ago for work following two of his sisters. Though three of his sisters are here now, their family is still in Ipoh where they return for holidays and Chinese New Year. Although he has been at the Club for five years, as of the 1st of August, Mun Tat is one of the faces wehad to say goodbye to as he was one of our F&B staff. He is currently Cook One, a position he has held for three years, and started working at the Club as Cook Two. He likes working at the Club; he is very happy here and likes the people he works with as well as the Members. He enjoys cooking, especially making local food, his favourite food of which is laksa. I must say, it’s one of my favourites to eat!

Raymond Heng Raymond, who is Singaporean and another one of the faces behind the scenes, worked at the Club for ten years. He started at the Club as the Assistant Chef and was then promoted to Chef in Charge, a position he has held for about three years.

DID YOU KNOW? This month, the following valued staff member celebrate his birthday! Happy Birthday to: • Cui Gongjie (Ronaldo)

Stella fondly remembers the grand parties in the Main Hall and the Club hosting the ZOAT Hockey Tournament on tennis courts one and two, where five hundred people attended from different countries. She recollects when King Willem-Alexander, then Prince Willem-Alexander, visited and when the Club turned one hundred years old Andrew Bartsheer, Club President, invited Minister Vivien Balakrishnan here.

Stella Lourdes

Nina, our Editor, was aided in her interview with Stella by her son Rohain who was interested in Stella's hobbies.

Stella Lourdes is a familiar face around the Club and one of the first members of Staff I remember meeting when we joined the Hollandse Club almost twelve years ago. She has been at the Club for twenty five years and has seen three generations of some Members' families come through the Club - for example, the Dijkhuizens and their three sons, the eldest of whom is now married and who has brought his two children here on holiday. Stella initially joined the Hollandse Club as a part-time receptionist, having seen the job advertised in the newspaper. She was later promoted to full-time and then to the Senior Receptionist. Later she moved to the Puppy Room, where she worked full-time for three years (this is where I first met her). She continued to work in the Puppy Room casually after she moved to Housekeeping, where she is now the Senior Supervisor. She reminisced about how the Club has changed over the years; for instance, the Amsterdam Room (now part of the Main Hall) was a separate room for fine dining. When she came for her interview, the offices were where the Brabant Room and shop are now and the upper floor was still being built. The Reception was then on the other side of the Lobby, where the porcelain houses are currently displayed while the bar was in a similar position but was smaller and cozy, with two sofas. At that time, the lower section of the Terrace roof went all the way across the Terrace and the pantry was where the Puppy Room is now. The Puppy Room was a more recent addition; she remarks that Martha Jonkers, though not a parent yet herself, initiated the Puppy Room and child-minding service.

Stella was born and grew up in Singapore after independence but before Singapore joined Malaya. In 2014, Temporary Member Ulrika Holms was so impressed with Stella that she invited her to stay with her in Denmark and Sweden for a month, paying her fare and accommodation. Her father, an Indian from Coimbatore near Bangalore, was still working for the British Armed Forces. Her mother was a Portuguese lady from Malacca. Stella has two children, a daughter (whose birthday it was on the day that we did the interview) who teaches at Avondale Grammar School and a son who is a police officer with the Central Narcotics Bureau. She has two grandsons aged sixteen and fourteen. She has previously received three Long Service awards from the Hollandse Club; for five, ten and fifteen years of service. She proudly describes the gold coins she was presented with; ten grams for each five years of service, with a maple leaf on one side and the Hollandse Club logo on the back and inscribed with the number of years of service. Stella's favourite football team is Manchester United and her hobby is travelling. In June she went to Vietnam to complete some charity work. It was a return visit, where she provided girls housekeeping advice; she also visited leprosy homes. She is hoping to make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem next year.

DID YOU KNOW? There will soon be room service in our hotel rooms starting from 7 am every morning!

Meet the new Events & Sports team!

Devina Singh Hi, my name is Devina and I am the new Project Manager for Events and Memberships at the Club. So far, I really enjoy working here. There are a lot of positive changes that are going on, from the new food and beverage catering team to a dedicated team all round.

Muhammad Abdul Hafiz My name is Hafiz and I am 23 years old this year. A bit about myself - after graduating from the Singapore Sport School, I began my studies in Sports and Leisure Management at Republic Polytechnic. After completion, I served two years in the national service, before joining the Hollandse Club.

My role here, essentially, is to put together the Events calendar and take care of any needs that Members may have. We are looking into having a lot of exciting events, mostly focused on family activities. This is still a work in progress but I think Members will be excited when they receive the new calendar.

I began as a Receptionist when I started last December. Annemiek came on board as our General Manager and invited me to become part of the Sport and Events Department. And here I am, now managing all activities relating to sports in the Club and also assisting with events.

I am originally from Singapore. I went to school here and moved to Canada for a couple of years, followed by Switzerland, where I graduated with a degree in Hospitality Management, more specifically in Luxury Management for hotels. I have been very active in the events world, including co-founding the only Innovation and Technology Summit in Europe and holding enterprise events. Needless to say, this is obviously an industry I am really passionate about and believe is essential to bonding between different groups of people.

As a kid I have always loved soccer. I have been heavily involved in soccer and have always dreamt of being a soccer player when I grew up. But as you grow older, your interests change and I started developing my career path, etc. I still play soccer leisurely with my friends. I do like to travel too. I like the idea of going backpacking, moving from one city to another. More trips to come!

I initially decided to study Hospitality because I have an immense passion for food and beverage of every caliber. I am proud of all the amazing food options my country offers and I truly believe we are world leaders in street food! Not to mention that we are coming up very quickly in the fine dining world too. Wine is another one of my interests, thus motivating me to get my second level sommelier degree a couple of years ago. I guess it helps to understand what you are drinking on Friday evenings! I am excited about my new role here, and look forward to meeting all of you soon. Please come and say 'Hello' if you see me around; I promise I am friendly!

Joining the Club is a career stepping stone for me. When I first joined as a Receptionist, I had no intentions of being part of the Sports and Events Department, but when I started to grow in the Club, opportunities were given to me. I took them all as challenges and learned as much as I could. Since receiving my new role, everything is new and I am learning a lot, not only in the Sport and Events Department but also how to serve our Members better.

Dorien Knaap - Claire Wintraecken

Life is a book full off short stories  “Paris Stories” a book by Mavis Gallant struck a chord with me, when writing this article about my interview with Dorien Knaap. Gallant said in the afterwork of the book; "Stories are not chapters of novels. They should not be read one after another, as if they were meant to follow along. Read one. Shut the book. Read something else. Come back later. Stories can wait".    The talk I had with Dorien about her career felt like a storybook full of short stories. Like Gallant’s book, sometimes one's life is like a book full of short stories: You make certain choices and put things aside to pick them up later in life. Dorien's stories are familiar, even identifiable, yet unexpected and fresh. She is a lady who has worn many hats: (and they do seem to fit her perfectly). She has gradually built a resume that is a collection of pieces all coming together.    From Groningen to the tropics  Dorien Knaap was born into an entrepreneurial family in Groningen, in the Netherlands. She studied History at the University of Groningen and, after graduating, worked for several years before getting the opportunity to advance her career as an Assistant in Opleiding (AIO) to pursue a PhD in Economic History at the University of Groningen. In 2000 her husband Otto Jan received the opportunity to move to Singapore for work. Dorien anticipated a few challenges with the move; culture shock, managing the distance between her and her family, the weather and not in the least finishing her PhD. Post-graduate study is a marathon rather than a sprint and definitely not classified as the perfect long distance job. You are left to forge your own support networks and you must be disciplined in order to stay motivated.  14 HOLLANDSE CLUB | WWW.HOLLANDSECLUB.ORG.SG

By Claire Wintraecken Dorien's tenacity was successful and eventually numerous notebooks full of scribbles developed into a thesis, 'Voor geld is altijd wel een plaats te vinden' (There is always a place (to find) for money). In her thesis, Dorien investigated the success of the Dutch industrial pioneer, Willem Albert Scholten. Dorien investigated the way W.A. Scholten (1819-1892) founded a total of 13 potato flour factories outside Holland. By this he created the first Dutch industrial multinational. At the time, this was quite unusual as communication and transportation were far from easy (the telephone was only invented by Bell in 1876).    She completed her PhD just before giving birth to her twin son and daughter. It was 2004 and time for a total career change; kicking old habits and finding herself in the midst of expat life, Dorien became a stay-at-home mum and combined motherhood with setting up and running her own flourishing business called “Paintbox”, with which she sold popular Dutch brands, such as Kitsch Kitchen (oilcloth bags), PiP Studio (crockery) and Kapla (kids building blocks). After working seven years, Dorien made another bold move.     Head of Guide at Asian Civilisation  In 2012, Dorien signed herself up for the Docent Training to become a guide at the Asian Civilisation Museum (ACM) with the Friends of the Museums (FOM). She had been a member of FOM since she first arrived in Singapore, but had not been very active. The six months training brought Dorien back to her first love, doing research, writing and presenting. The course also turned out to be a perfect avenue for Dorien to build new friendships with like-minded people from all over the world. With its nearly 2000 members who come from 52 countries and speak over 30 different languages, the FOM is a very international organisation.    Dorien loves being a docent and this experience has been very enriching for her. “Learning about Singapore and it is place in the history of South East Asia has made me feel more part of this country”, she says. Her dedication to the ACM was recognised; one thing led to another and she found herself Overall Head of Docent Training at FOM. Together with another very experienced FOM Docent, Patricia Welch, she is now responsible for all the Docent Trainings of seven Singapore museums where FOM Docents guide. An entrepreneur by nature, historian by training, and an organiser with a strong business mindset, Dorien combines all these traits along with her effervescent personality, style and sense of humour to continue giving back to the world.

MEMBERSHIP Friends Of The Museums (FOM ) – Volunteer opportunity  If you have a love of contemporary art or history, you will find a natural home at FOM. Becoming a volunteer is an ideal way to make new friends while getting to know the inner workings of the museums in Singapore: to meet Singaporeans, students and global travellers on your tours and become part of a great network of people. FOM will broaden your knowledge of Singapore (and its neighbours) and of course it's great fun!  In September 2016 the Docent Training for the following museums will begin.  * Asian Civilisation Museum  * Singapore Art Museum- Gillman Barracks  * National Museum of Singapore  * The Peranakan Museum

classes on Tuesdays, hear lectures by visiting experts, go on field trips and participate in hands-on workshops. Apart from studying history and culture, you will also learn the art of public speaking. You do not need to be a native English speaker; however, please note that all of the instruction will be in English and most tours are conducted in English. All guides must be proficient English speakers. Many of the guides speak English as a second language and do a fantastic job.   If you would like more information about the docent training at the FOM, please send an email to docenttraining@fom.sg OR contact the FOM office at +65 6337 3685. Of course, you can always chat to Dorien at the Hollandse Club; she is an avid tennis player and can often be found near the tennis courts with her husband Otto Jan van Diepen and her three children.

As a family, and over our many years as Members, we have always enjoyed the gym, the swimming lessons and the tennis courts. Each of my boys have swum for the Dutch Dolphins for their entire time here. In addition, I have played for the WITS Tennis team, Mostly Orange, as a Founding Member. We also have enjoyed many meals and cold drinks on The Terrace!

A little bit about us. We are a family of four, I am Mary, an American and my husband Jeremy, is British by birth. We have two amazing boys, Patrick & Christopher, aged 13 and 11. In addition, to each having three passports, we now call Sydney, Australia home. We have lived in London and Sydney. We have been in Singapore for seven years and our boys attend the Australian International School. We decided to join the Hollandse Club after two of my husband’s work colleagues recommended it when we arrived. We took advantage of a Lifetime Membership offer and the Club was “geographically desirable” to our first home that was in the Goldhill area. We liked the Hollandse Club for the location, the overall ambience and the mix of nationalities when we arrived. We liked the size of the Club, and the fact that it is in a very peaceful setting whilst still very

As we have moved house three times in seven years, the Hollandse Club remains a very central part of our weekly existence here. We have seen a lot of changes, and sadly have seen many awesome staff leave and move on. We are, however, lucky enough to still have great families that we keep up with even when our schedules no longer permit us to meet weekly with the kids. The Fox, Drewer, Chaplin, Gorman, Santangelo and Taylor families never fail to keep in regular touch and as with all great friendships, we can always pick up where we left off! In addition, the Club has always been a great source of making new friendships too! We are very excited to see that the Club and its Members have voted to keep going and to re-invent the Club to keep up with the times and Members’ needs! Thanks! We look forward to many more happy times at the Hollandse Club! But, please, can you promise to keep a Vietnamese offering and bring back the PANCAKES!

Meet the Loiterton Family! By Jennifer Koné it must be a good place to work and that the Club values their staff; this translates in their interactions with the Members. Thank you for talking to us. Is there anything you would like to add? The Club buildings and courts have a lovely old-world charm and in fact, although in need of repair in some areas, it adds to its appeal. I hope as a family we can add value to the Club and encourage more Members to join to bring it back to the legendary Club I hear and see, from the photos, it was a few decades ago.

Hello Karaline and welcome to the Hollandse Club! Please tell us a bit about yourself and your family. I am Karaline Loiterton and I moved to Singapore two years ago with my husband George, son Harry (11), and daughter Lilli (8). What brings you to Singapore? We moved from Sydney, Australia with George’s work. Our children attend the Australian International School (AIS). This is our first International move as a family, although my husband and I have lived overseas previously. Why did you decide to join the Hollandse Club? We chose to become Members of the Hollandse Club a few months ago as I had joined the WITS league (Women’s International Tennis Singapore) and needed courts for my singles matches. We have Dutch neighbours on both sides of our house and have shared many fun times with them so we knew, as Australians, we would be a good fit with the Dutch community. What do you enjoy most about the Club? I also started playing in the Ladies tennis Pyramid and was asked to join the Club’s WITS team. Sadly, as I write, we are short of players due to illness, so may be merging with another group (any Members with mid to high level ability and interested in playing please contact us!) It would be great to have a Hollandse Club A team this season, so we can play on our Club courts. The whole family have hugely enjoyed having tennis lessons with the legendary Mr Wee, a Hollandse Club institution. We were very impressed by the new décor of The Terrace, and the quality of the food. The Vietnamese selection was fantastic and we hope the new F&B provider will offer this again, rather than the usual “pizza and burger” selection found at other clubs. The staff are all friendly and I have enjoyed speaking with some of them, who have been with the Club for a long time. It’s an indication that 16 HOLLANDSE CLUB | WWW.HOLLANDSECLUB.ORG.SG

Kids Holiday Camp Interview By Jennifer Koné

Swimming Camp Theo Marcos, age 7 and Simon Marcos, age 5 Switzerland Hello Theo and Simon! Tell me, why did you choose to join the swim camp? Theo: Hello! Actually I didn’t choose to join the camp, it was my mum who decided to register us, my brother and I. But, initially, I didn’t want to go… Really? Why? Theo: Yes, because I don’t like to play sport. But I was finally glad because it was really fun and I liked it. Finally, you went to the swim camp together, right? So, what activities did you do there? Simon: I swam a little bit but I preferred playing and having fun in the water! I also bomb-dived a lot! Theo: I learnt freestyle, breaststroke, and butterfly. I managed to do backstroke too. We also learned to bomb-dive! I was good at it! It sounds amazing! Would you like both to do it again next year? Simon: Yes, it was really cool! I also went to the tennis camp and I would like to do it again too because I had fun there. Theo: Sure, but I would like to go to the tennis camps next time. My mum registered both of us, but I couldn’t go with Simon because I was sick. By the way, Simon missed me a lot. Ha-ha! Simon: Yes, Theo stayed at home with mum and they redecorated my room before my birthday, so I was glad! Amazing! Thank you boys!

My Visit to Long Chim By Lana McLean, age 8

Long Chim is a Thai restaurant at Marina Bay Sands. I’m writing about it because it is one of my favourite restaurants! The Food Long Chim has a lovely kids menu, with proper Thai food! I ordered the crispy pork and my sister ordered the roasted duck. Both came with rice and delicious dipping sauce. I loved my pork because it was very crispy and that’s what made it good. There were many juices we could choose from and no fizzy drinks, so it was healthy too. For dessert, we had 2 choices – banana roti and sticky rice with mango. The banana roti was scrumptious, warm and crispy with sugar on top! My mom had the sticky rice with mango and said it was very good too.

Everything Else On the kids menu, there was a colouring activity and we were given nice crayons to colour with. The waiters were very friendly and the restaurant is nicely decorated. If you are lucky and get a good table, and you are there at the right time, you will get to see a glorious light show! Overall, I really loved Long Chim. I hope you go there one day and enjoy it as much as I did.

Singapore Grand Prix Weekend By Jens Kuipers, age 11

My dad has been a Formula 1 fan for a long time. When we moved to Singapore in 2010 he took me to the Grand Prix over here and I’ve loved it ever since. We go to the Singapore Grand Prix every year and I’ve also been to the Malaysia Grand Prix with him. I like the Formula 3 and the Porsche races too, that are being held before the Formula 1 race. I’m a big fan of Max Verstappen whom I met in the Pit Lane in Malaysia last year. He stopped to have his photo taken with me.

26 HOLLANDSE CLUB | WWW.HOLLANDSECLUB.ORG.SG

He also signed my T-shirt but unfortunately the autograph has been washed off. Luckily I got a new autograph from him on my cap when he did a meet-and-greet during the Singapore Grand Prix weekend last year. I like the Ferrari team as well but I’ll be cheering mostly for Max Verstappen when he comes to Singapore again for the Grand Prix. I can’t wait!

My Summer Holiday By Viviënne Kuipers, age 7 This summer holiday I was in Holland, my home country. I was very excited to go there as I hadn't been there since last year. It was great to see my family and friends again. We did lots of fun things. and I had many sleepovers with my grandparents and cousins. One time my grandma took me to a traditional day in a small town in the southwest of Holland. We had a look inside a windmill and watched sheep being sheared. There were also many big horses that had to work on the land in the past. There were competitions with these horses where the riders had to use a spear to catch a small ring while cantering. This was exciting to see. I had a great time in Holland but I’m also happy to be back in Singapore where I can go swimming at the Hollandse Club often. In Holland it’s usually too cold to swim outdoors!

My Adventures in London, Paris & York By Rohan Pillai, age 7

My trip started off on Sunday night when we left for London. It took thirteen hours to get there. My dad picked us up from the airport and we went with our favourite taxi driver, Zubir. We went straight to the apartment and unpacked and went to the Chelsea Football Stadium! On Tuesday we went to Oxford Street and bought my mum everything she saw. We went home and then went to see a film at Leicester Square. It was called 'X-Men Apocalypse' and after that we went to the Nickelodeon store. In the morning, I started to colour with a new colouring book called Colour Quest and after that we went to the Natural History Museum; we saw dinosaurs, natural disasters and how the earth was made and then we went to the Museum shop and I bought some precious stones.

Paris Hilton Opera and we saw the Eiffel Tower in the night and we were on it when it lit up. We went on a bus and had a hop-on-hop-off tour that ran for three days. We saw Sacre Coeur, Notre Dame, the Louvre and we also got a drawing of my brother and I, hand sketched. After the third day we saw France versus Iceland live at the stadium and then we caught a train back to London.

The next afternoon we were on a train to Yorkshire. When we got there we rented a car and drove to Middlethorpe Hall, our hotel. We got some high tea and my brother and I raced around in the garden. In the morning we drove to Castle Howard and walked around the gardens and learned about the history of the Castle. That night we went to a very nice pub. The next day we went to Manchester City Football Stadium and we saw the exhibit of Manchester City. In the morning we went to Clifford Tower and saw how they defended York in the past, then we went to the Jorvik Centre but it was closed, so we saw a church and we learned the history of the Vikings and how they survived. After that we went to Whitby Abbey and we drove past Robin Hood Bay and we went to Scarborough and had dinner in the hotel. We took a photo with a statue of a man who was really tall and he was at the bay. After that we went home. The next morning we went on the city wall and had high tea at the Railway Hotel and then we left York.

The next morning we went with our aunt Lakshmi to Covent Garden, where we saw a magician, a street actor and an opera singer and then went home via the Tube. The next day we went to my dad's office and looked around his London work place, which has a beautiful view of the city. After that we went to Colchester and we saw my dad's aunt and uncle and then went back to central London on the train. The next morning we went and had breakfast with my mum's friend and her husband, next I went to my mum's aunt's place and met some of my cousins, aunts and uncles. The next day we had lunch at my dad’s aunt’s place and we met more family.

We arrived that evening, when we got off the train we saw the Harry Potter trolley at Platform 9 and 3/4. On Tuesday we went shopping again. The next day we went on the Eurostar to Paris and we stayed in the

28 HOLLANDSE CLUB | WWW.HOLLANDSECLUB.ORG.SG

When I got back from Paris, I rode the suitcase back to the taxi. Later, we went to the Shard, the tallest building in Europe, for the Roald Dahl high tea, and we even ate the menu and everything. From there we went to the Forbidden Planet and then to the Nike store. After that we walked all the way back to the apartment.

The following day we went to the Science Museum with our aunt Lakshmi and learned about planes, olden day clocks and the World Wars. The next day we saw more family. The last day of my beautiful experience in London we had to stay at home and pack. Just before we left we visited a Reciprocal Club and then walked through Regents Park, where we saw the ducks and squirrels and a swan. I loved my adventures in Paris, York and London....

Tree House Adventure in Thailand Khao Sok National Park By Lara (6) & Joris (4) van der Hoeven

This summer my family and I went to Thailand for a week. My brother and I were very excited, as we were going to sleep in a real tree house, six meters above the ground! After flying to Phuket – luckily not a long flight – we were picked up in a big white car that my brother liked a lot. We drove for two hours and then we were finally there: our jungle tree house! The whole resort is full of jungle and there are a lot of pathways that are really bridges and stairs that are built high above the ground. The treehouses are up in the trees and my mum told me they are from four meters to even twelve meters high! My brother and I tried to walk over all the bridges and discovered the highest terrace of each house, so we could see the view. Our treehouse was called Tarzan and had two rooms and a terrace; so this was our big bird nest. Inside our room a real tree was growing right through the floor and roof, which was very cool. We could hang our clothes and bags on its branches. My mum and dad told me it was the rainy season and they became a bit grumpy because of all the mosquitos, but my brother and I didn’t bother too much. At night, we had a big net over our bed and on most days the sun was shining all day, so we could swim in the little resort pool. We saw many caterpillars with soft hairs, all over the resort and we learned they will all eventually change into real

butterflies! During the week, we went into the National Park and made a long walk with a guide who knew a lot about plants and animals. We saw and played with a plant that closes its leaves upon touching and does the same when it rains because it hates to get wet! The trail went through a mangrove jungle area next to a river where we had to cross small water streams and and when we got very sweaty we went into the river for a swim. That was very nice and the guide prepared pineapple for us. On my mum’s birthday, we went on the back of a big elephant and walked all the way up a river and back. We all thought it was really scary and cool at the same time and afterwards we gave the elephant bananas. And during one of the trips we saw a big tarantula inside a nest made of leaves that my parents thought was really scary. We also went on a boat trip and canoeing and we got flashlights on our heads and visited a cave with a lot of strange forms. My mum told me that was limestone that forms that way over a long long time. If your parents like a bit of adventure, well organised outings and don’t mind a bit ‘rundown’ or ‘basic facilities’ then it is a good idea to go there one day as well as we as kids definitely liked it a lot! Maybe consider not going into the high mosquito season though…

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK GOES SPORTY!

Kallang

By Claire Wintraecken The theme of this month's Magazine is sports and unfortunately, I am not very sporty. So I am concerned, what should I write about in this "Off the Beaten Track" column? We have the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro - should I find inspiration there? This summer’s Olympic Games offer many opportunities for watching sports I have never even heard off; like equestrian jumping or archery. However, instead of finding an “Off the Beaten Track Olympic sport", I have decided to venture off to the Singapore Sports Hub to get some inspiration. I am guessing by now you have probably been to the Hub or have at least seen the National Stadium; as a part of the city state’s skyline. But have you taken advantage of all that the Singapore Sports Hub has 30 HOLLANDSE CLUB | WWW.HOLLANDSECLUB.ORG.SG

to offer? I dress myself for the occasion, namely in my active wear (no- there are no YouTube videos of this... at the moment). I must admit though, I feel like one of those women who star in the loopy low-budget send-up “Activewear”, by the two Australian vloggers, Connor and Christiaan Van Vuuren. If you have not seen it, I recommend it. It is an hilarious parody poking fun at the rising trend of (mostly women) wearing sports clothes while doing everything; the laundry, gulping coffee, doing groceries, getting their nails done or even buying active wear! So, doing as they do (yes, I guess I am one of them), I decide to take the train and alight at the Stadium MRT station.

The Singapore Sports Hub (costs $1.4 billion) opened on the 30th of June 2014 and is located in Kallang. The venue is a fully integrated sports and entertainment hub, able to host football, athletics, rugby and cricket as well as concerts. The centrepiece is the 55,000 capacity, energy-efficient National Stadium. It has localised cooling technology ensuring spectators are always comfortable while being one of only a few carbon-neutral stadiums ever built. It also has the largest free-spanningdomed retractable roof in the world, which opens or closes in 25 minutes. I have been to the Singapore Sports Hub once before, the occasion was the SouthEast Asian Games.

The Hub has some amazing upcoming big events such as, the Women's Tennis Association, International Premier Tennis League, and Katy Perry and Taylor Swift concerts. The Singapore Sports Hub has so much to offer. So no more excuses, get into your active wear and take off to the gym at the Hollandse Club or the Singapore Sports Hub. Both give me a good reason to wear my active wear.

Background

I went to see the Men's diving (10m) and was impressed by the divers as well as the Aquatic Centre. The 10 lane competition pool meets world tournament standards.I take a fully guided 90-minute Hub walking tour and get a lovely volunteer who tells us one can skate, lawn bowl, canoe, climb and even learn about the sporting history of Singapore at the Hub's own Museum. The Museum has a Hall of Fame, where sports heroes such as swimmer Ang Peng Siong get the spotlight. Of course, you can see artefacts like old Malaysia Cup tickets, interactive displays and footage of previous matches; relive the first Singapore Grand Prix, which took place in 1966 at the old Thomson Road circuit or have a closer look at official RIFA World Cup match balls since 1970.

RECIPROCAL CLUBS By Nina Gunasingham

As you know, being a Member of the Hollandse Club entitles you to reciprocal Membership at many other clubs in Singapore, Malaysia and around the world. For clubs outside Singapore, we have the full use of their facilities and amenities. Their Members, of course, enjoy the same benefits at the Hollandse Club. Claire and I dropped into the Japanese Association before the holidays to have a look around and have lunch and I have just returned from my London holiday where I popped in for a few minutes to have a look at the two reciprocal clubs there. The nearest tube station for both those Clubs is Green Park, but they are each a five minute walk from there in opposite directions. St James’s Hotel and Club 7-8 Park Place, St. James’s, London SW1A 1LP http://www.stjameshotelandclub.com

St James’s Club was originally founded in London in 1857 as a gentlemen’s club but closed in 1978. It was revived at its present premises as St James’s Hotel and Club in 2008. The smoke-free hotel has a Michelin starred restaurant called Seven Park Place, which serves French fine dining for lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Saturday, as well as the more casual William’s Bar and Bistro, run by the same chef, which serves modern and classical dishes. Traditional afternoon tea is also available daily and the bar is open daily from midday. The friendly staff at the front desk informed us that, although there isn’t a gym on the premises, guests have complimentary use of one around the corner. Anyone can walk into the hotel for a meal, though they recommend you reserve ahead if you want to eat at Seven Park Place as there are only nine tables. Reciprocal Members are entitled to a discounted room rate at St James’s Hotel and Club (which includes complimentary WiFi), but you do need a letter of introduction from the Hollandse Club. According to Expedia, valet park ing is available and WiFi in public areas is free. Additionally, 24-hour room service, a business centre, and a meeting room are onsite.

FEATURES The Japanese Association 120 Adam Road, Singapore 289899 http://www.jas.org.sg

Everyone must be familiar with the Japanese Association as it is right next to the Hollandse Club. We can use their restaurants and similarly Japanese Association Members can use the Hollandse Club food and beverage outlets; they can also apply for a Day Pass if they want to make use of our sports facilities. Don't forget to take your Hollandse Club membership card when you go over! Claire had a look around the premises and we met for lunch at the Donguri Family Restaurant, the more casual of the options available which serves a variety of Japanese food. I like the availability of the free soft drinks and green tea refills, and there are some kids' meal options for younger children.

DID YOU KNOW? That it would be great if you could take some time to rate the Hollandse Club on Tripadvisor and Google!

Artist Insights: Stephanie D. By Martijn Boersma

Stéphanie D. is a French Artist based in Singapore. After more than 10 years abroad, Stephanie is fascinated by all cultures encountered during her trips around the world. She always studied close to local artists and took a precious inspiration from these various experiences. She’s passionate about mixing colors and textures and specialized in knife painting. "A native of Dunkerque (a town in the North of France), I lived for more than ten years in the South West of France, before starting my life abroad. From a young age, I have always been surrounded by artists in my family. I grew up with Flemish Painting and I learnt a lot from my mother, who practices traditional Flemish peasant painting on wood. Like my family, I am a passionate drawer and consequently studied courses in the area of Fine Arts in Dunkerque. At twenty-four years of age, I started my Fascinated by an Indian painter from Tamil Nadu, I took many courses at the Tamil Nadu Institute. It was there, I discovered other inspirations including American landscapes. After studying in India, I continued my ten year adventure around Asia and visited South Korea, China, Japan and Indonesia. I returned home to France, this time Paris for one year, and was influenced by many visits to historic sites and castles. I was also greatly inspired by local artists who taught me the art of Knife Painting. This was a revelation to me! The knife-like instrument allows me to fully express my inspiration; giving me the ability to create pictures and share my multi-cultural travel memories. My artistic statement is to invite people to travel through my paintings: blue is always present in each of my canvases. This means peace and origin of life."

The Comedy Club Asia By Martijn Boersma

August 13th 2016 A crowd of 80 guests enjoyed another great night of laughs and perfectly placed awkward silences. The line-up of comedians was diverse and on-key with well-placed cultural differences within an internationally aware crowd. The emcee was flown in from KL and at certain moments stole the show with his wittiness and on par audience participation. It was a good reminder that we should laugh more and not take life to seriously! Come join us next time. Comedy Club Asia will be back in October as they will be holding their Kings and Queen of Comedy Asia 7 from the 30th of September until the 1st of October at the Esplanade.

Yin yoga poses apply moderate stress to the connective tissues of the body—the tendons, fascia, and ligaments—with the aim of increasing circulation in the joints and improving flexibility. They are also designed to improve the flow of qi, the subtle energy said in Chinese medicine to run through the meridian pathways of the body. Improved qi flow is hypothesized to improve organ health, immunity, and emotional well-being. Expect a relaxed atmosphere and a meditative practice. KARATE

History: Zen Do Ka Freestyle Karate classes began at Hollandse Club in 2012 and Hollandse School in 2014. Since then, Karate Kidz from 4 to 14 years (and a few parents (ages withheld)) have been getting a kick out of karate, some being promoted all the way to Brown belt, only one belt to go before becoming Black Belts. By popular demand ZDK Karate now has three sessions per week at Hollandse Club. Classes: Apart from having fun in games and light hearted competitions, Karate Kidz (and adults) learn that Karate is meant to be used for Self Defense, not to hurt people. They learn take downs and breakfalls, how to escape grabs and holds, defend against punches and kicks and perhaps most importantly, to respond in a proportional way if attacked. Zen Do Ka Karatekas learn traditional Kata choreographed battles with imaginary foes to promote concentration and the Zendoka’s ongoing quest for perfection. News: Over 50 Hollandse Club, Hollandse School, Swiss and Canadian School Karate Kidz attended gradings on June 5th in the Rotterdam Room. Congratulations go to Hollandse Club Kids: Brent Scheepers, Mahe Le Petit Comarmond, Michael Pearce, & Millie Hobbs who earned stripes on their White Belts. Odin Huve, Seba & Cedric Anslot, Mick van Elst and Derek Esmeijer who earned their Yellow Belts. Leon Dal Ben, Jon Steenslid, Noam & Romi Ron who

! e c i r t a P l l e w e Far e van Breugel

by Jacco Poland and Mik

Last month, the Men’s Social Tennis Group said farewell to Patrice Plet, who had managed the Club’s men’s tennis scene for five years. Patrice and his wife Conny and their two children, Luna and Fleur, have left Singapore to return to the Netherlands. Patrice turned the men’s social tennis scene on Saturdays from a poorly-attended event to a lively social tennis session. For much of those five years, Patrice was not only central to the organisation of men’s tennis but also the many evening tennis events; and was often the heart and soul of social tennis and parties. Frustratingly, Patrice suffered a tennis injury due to the complications of a “frozen” shoulder, and had to learn to play left-handed in order to continue playing. It’s a warning for us all: any signs of a nagging pain in the shoulder of the playing arm should be taken very seriously and medical advice sought. We wish Patrice the very best in his recovery! The tennis crowd organised an evening out and a farewell ceremony to thank Patrice for his outstanding ownership of men’s tennis and to wish him well back in the Netherlands. If you are interested in joining the Men’s Social Tennis Group they meet every Saturday at 2pm and play for 2.5 hours. The minimum standard is to be able to serve overarm and to hit the ball, both forehand and backhand, with reasonable consistency. The participants are allocated to courts based on their ability and the standard ranges from beginner to advanced. 56 HOLLANDSE CLUB | WWW.HOLLANDSECLUB.ORG.SG

We reward ourselves with a few beers and bitterballen afterwards. You do not need to be able to play each week – by Friday you may decide if you can make it and if so, will be allocated a place on a court. The Men’s Social Tennis is available to Hollandse Club Members only. However, if you want to join us for a couple of weeks as part of you decision on whether to join the Club, please let us know and we will include you in the tennis. Please contact us via hcmensocialtennis@gmail. com. Alternatively, feel free to drop by the courts just before 2pm on any Saturday and ask for Mike or Jacco. If you do drop by, we will try our best to accommodate you the same day. There are also many other tennis events and competitions, such as the tennis ladder, tennis lessons and tennis socials for men, women and children of all ages. If you want to be informed about any of these events please contact tenniscommittee@hollanseclub. org.sg. The Hollandse Club also have their own excellent tennis coaches. So, if you have played in the past, or have an interest to start playing, please contact Scott at scott@savitar.sg to find out more about the different opportunities. You are always welcome. And finally again we send our sincere thanks to Patrice for leaving our Men’s Social Tennis in such great shape, and our very best wishes to him and his whole family!

COACHES CORNER By Scott Johnston

Running around the Backhand Which is stronger, your forehand or backhand? If you have a stronger forehand than backhand, it is usually because more forehands are hit than backhands and therefore it becomes the more comfortable shot. The backhand, to be hit well, involves a grip change and superb positioning, which for most Club players is difficult to master. So I suggest you use your stronger shot more often. By this, I mean running around your backhand. If you divide the court lengthwise into four sections, one to four, from the left of the court (for right handers), with the center line dividing sections two and three; you should try to hit forehands in sections two, three and four. To do this, you need to decide early if you will have time to move over into section two, so that you can hit the forehand. Ensure you move as fast as possible with side stepping footwork. Once you are in position, which takes that little extra effort, you should hit your forehand shot back across the court… aiming for your opponent’s sections one or two.

Aymeric Petit Aymeric is from Paris and played at junior level in France. He has over 10 years of coaching experience. He has coached all over the world including China, where he was coaching expatriate community, at a leading tennis club in Sydney, Australia and as the head coach of Milnerton tennis club in Cape Town, South Africa. Aymeric is a master level 3 qualified tennis coach With the Australian tennis professional association and holds a diploma of fitness with the Australian college of Sport and Fitness. IMPORTANT DATES Sep30 - Junior Team Tennis Grand Final Oct 7 - Junior Group Tennis Program Lessons Begin (8 Week Term Ends) Oct 11 - 13 - Savitar Junior Tennis Camp For any more information or to register for any of the above activiites, please contact Scott Johnston on

Do not hit down the line, for this will open up your own court and put you in trouble. Then get back into the center for the next shot. When hitting this “off forehand” you should try to remain in an open stance position with your feet. Run around that weaker backhand and hit away with the stronger forehand to win more match points. Hockey By Martijn Boersma

Hockey with the Hollandse Club: Dutch Youth Hockey Hockey has always been a favourite sport within the Dutch community. In The Netherlands, we start from a young age; learning the skills of this great team sport. It definitely is a sport which helps you grow and improve in coordination, your fitness levels and have fun. Dutch Hockey has always been an integral part of the Hollandse Club community and we are currently focusing on the potential growth and importance of the sport within Singapore. We have around 170 registered Youth players and roughly 100 players with the Ladies and Men’s teams. The program has been successful over the years, and together with the Hockey committees and the Club we are looking to further grow and develop the programs. For the Youth program, we have had a great number of volunteer-parents to coach, organise, assist and be part of our program; this truly fits our Club feel and culture and has been very much appreciated. Having said that, we want to help and alleviate some of these responsibilities from the parents by setting up a stand-alone training program for the youth via a fully certified professional coaching company. This does not imply that the parents cannot be involved as a volunteer coach anymore. We still highly encourage this. It means that when there are moments in the season where a lot of parents are not available, the program still goes on and we can provide trainthe-trainer courses for the parent-coaches! The Hollandse Club has appointed FTO to be our hockey program/coaches provider. They will set up the training schedule and work on the various levels of skills to be taught to our youth. 60 HOLLANDSE CLUB | WWW.HOLLANDSECLUB.ORG.SG

A quick bio on FTO: FTO (www.fto.com.sg) has a team of fully certified hockey coaches to help transform your team’s season with professionally planned sessions. With a wide variety of drills, we make each training session enjoyable and goals achievable. Our coaches are able to offer instructions such that playing time on a field that will enhance eye hand coordination, balance, quickness, agility, stick skills, accuracy, ball possession, timing, overall individual skills and hence self-confidence. Regardless of an inexperienced hockey team or one who has been with the game for years, we are able to provide customized services just for you. Our philosophy in training is to provide a holistic training methodology that focuses both on academic and sporting excellence. We currently provide coaching services to schools such as St Joseph's Institution and Republic Polytechnic and provide trainers to various clubs and Satellite Centres in Singapore. With our vast contacts, we have linked up top international players and coaches in Singapore. We look forward to an amazing season with great trainings sessions, competitive games, and good sportsmanship. SPORTS & SOCIAL EVENTS REPORTS

SQUASH By Paul Roberts

In the last instalment I mentioned that our \various teams in the National Squash League were having varying degrees of success but were plugging away admirably. Well, the season finished with the Vets I and Vets II making it to the playoff finals, with both having to play the league winners on the same evening at Kallang. Both teams fielded admirable line-ups who should have had every chance of success. Alas for the Vets II, our secret weapon Vijoy ‘the Bunny’ Varghese was just getting into his swing when the referee ‘schooled in the Stevie Wonder school of refereeing’ missed a clear double bounce call on a game point, which would have given Vijoy the momentum in the match. This mockery of a call had a somewhat adverse effect on dear Vijoy and the red mist descended, mucking up his game and the whole thing was over before he had time to refocus. The Colonel made a valiant effort and gained an all-important point for the team. I luckily played an extremely magnanimous opponent who kindly tore a calf muscle in the fourth game and had to retire. It meant that dear Manoj had to win 3-1 to give us a chance. Our opponents, however, had different ideas and played a chap who quite clearly was fighting well below his station. He would have given our Vets I guys a good game and suffice to say the game was only going to end one way. So, if it weren’t for some dodgy refereeing and a player who quiet clearly was not playing in the correct division, I might well be writing a different tale today. To the Vets I team. Well, another heroic effort from all players, especially dear Ross in his wonderful spandex pants. Daniel gave us a masterclass in 'never give up' and Fred gave us… a class. The internal competition was held the weekend prior to the Vets finals and once again it gave us some excellent games; most notably Obi One who just seemed to take every challenge in his stride. He refused to give in despite a gruelling path to the final which included a truly spectacular game against John ‘the Smile’ Bird; he won 3-2. This was followed by an even more energetic match against James ‘the Bobby’ Spalding; he somehow managed to win 3-2. So, into the final he went where he was matched up against our Quebecan master who had a somewhat more serene path to the final, beating both John Yates and Kim ‘the Tassi’ Hine 3-0. So what we should have seen was a fresh faced Daniel being able to outrun Woon for an easy win. But no, what we should have seen was a fresh faced Daniel

being able to outrun Woon for an easy win. But no, our Jedi refused to lie down, he did not falter - well he did actually, but he gave it a bloody good go; but ultimately lost the match 3-2. Some excellent squash played, which goes to show how far our little band of ‘squashers’ have come over the past few years. We also had further matches for those who didn’t make it past the earlier rounds and there too we saw some excellent games, most notably in the final where Vijoy and Erik played a thoroughly entertaining match. Vijoy was relentless in his determination to just keep running regardless of how futile some points may have been. Dear Erik struggled to come to terms with Vijoy’s almost magical ability to get from one side of the court to the other in the blink of an eye. Erik managed to eventually get him game-on and won through in the end, but a great match to watch. In the final draw, Alan played Maureen in the final and won the match with some of his trademark eclectic shots that tend to confuse everyone, including himself. A great event and one that we look forward to repeating next year. Well, by the time this blurb goes to print, we will have started the Cosmo League again as holders and hosts for this year’s event. We expect to have another good season with our erstwhile Capitan James guiding us to another strong finish. The Hollandse Club then has the honour of hosting the end of competition ceremony and, from what I hear, Captain James has already managed an outstanding coup by getting a certain well known (in his own mind) DJ to play at the event. Well done James! We will also be holding our annual match with the Cricket Club for the Mukerji Cup. Having won with certain ease last year, this year we expect a tougher challenge from our friends on the Padang. Aside from that, we continue to welcome anyone looking to join our diverse and dangerous group down in the depths of the Hollandse Club. You will find us there every Saturday afternoon, so please feel free to come down and have a hit.

SPORTS & SOCIAL EVENTS REPORTS

Meet the Squash Committee! By Nina Gunasingham

In addition to the Staff at the Hollandse Club, both visible and behind the scenes, the Club (especially the social aspect) is kept running by the efforts of Members who volunteer to help. This is usually by Members joining or forming committees to run different activities. If you would like to participate, please don't hesitate to join one of the committees; they are always looking for new faces to help keep things going. In this issue we focus on the Squash Committee, which is led by Daniel Gallinas and consists of Fred, James, Colin, Ross and Erik. The Squash Committee The Squash Committee takes care of all the squash operations at the Club including the internal league (boxes), National and COSMO (Cosmopolitan) leagues, practice, social events and exchanges with many clubs here and in South East Asia including Manila, Jakarta and Bangkok. They also manage activities outside of squash, such as a racketlon competition against the Club’s tennis players and the yearly pre-season bike ride. Below is a small summary about each of the Committee Members. Daniel Gelinas I am Canadian and a Risk Manager at Standard Chartered Bank. I am the Squash Convenor, as well as the Club First Secretary on the Main Committee. I have been living in Singapore for close to eight years with my wife Sylvie and my daughter Naomi. We have another daughter Vicky, living in Montreal, Canada. Singapore has been a great discovery for the family. Its cosmopolitan cultures, architecture and proximity to other South East Asian treasures have kept us wanting more and more throughout the years. Of course, the squash scene has kept me at the Club and given me lots of enjoyable moments. I discovered the Hollandse Club while doing a tour of the clubs when I moved to Singapore. It was a ‘no brainer’ for us to join due to its resort-like setting within a relaxing atmosphere, as well as the squash courts which attracted me a lot. On top of this, the family uses the pool on a regular basis and Naomi works at the pool on Saturday afternoons helping the teachers. My favourite meal has been, and remains, the salmon dish which seems to be a hidden treasure at the Club. 62 HOLLANDSE CLUB | WWW.HOLLANDSECLUB.ORG.SG

I joined the Squash Committee to help support the squash activities and to bring new Members to the courts. In the five years I have been on the Committee, we have more than tripled the number of active Members and are now competing on the national scene with our teams at all levels. Colin Bullock I moved to Singapore in 2013 from Kuala Lumpur having previously lived in India, Oman, Brunei and Hong Kong. I am married to Sylvia and we have three children, Isabel 14, Thomas 12 and Tessa 8. I initially joined the Hollandse Club as a squash Member but became a full Member due to the standard of squash and tennis, the great social vibe and the ease of access via public transport. I love the food, especially the laksa, but the Vietnamese menu is also very good - not forgetting the famous Dutch specialty of nasi goreng! I joined the Squash Committee to help out. After playing competitive squash for 25 years, the squash at the Hollandse Club is probably the most social, most involved and has the largest number of similar standard players of any club I have ever played at. Fred Saarloos I am Dutch and just turned 59 years old in August. In 1995, I came to Singapore from Luxembourg in order to join Standard Chartered Bank (from Citibank). I immediately joined the Hollandse Club on a corporate deal but eventually converted my Membership to a personal one. I have two children who grew up at the Hollandse Club (twenty and twenty one years old) but they are now living and studying in England. I re-discovered the Club some five or six years ago, as I felt once I had quit corporate life, I had no more excuses for not playing squash. The Club is still the same club as it was twenty years ago; but my priorities have changed from family activities, to a three or four times a week squash habit.

SPORTS & SOCIAL EVENTS REPORTS I joined the Squash Committee because I have the time and like the group of people, who are all active and supportive. The squash section, as small as it is, with perhaps less than twenty five players, is definitely pushing above its weight at a national level, having won numerous inter-club and national titles, which makes it even more fun to be part of.

could do different activities. On our first visit, we really liked the Club with its tropical feel, great swimming lessons and as an added bonus it turned out; a very active squash community for me. So the choice to become Members was easy. In terms of food options, I really enjoy the Vietnamese food, especially the Pho Bo - it is probably my favourite food in Singapore.

My advice to other Members: come and check us out on Saturday afternoons if you have an interest in doing something which is fun and healthy. You will not regret it...

I don’t think I actually really decided to join the Squash Committee, it just seemed to happen naturally! We do not really have fixed roles in the Committee, however, this year I organised the Club Championships, while last year I was Vice-Captain for the COSMO team.

James Spalding I am Australian/British and moved to Singapore from Australia three and a half years ago. I joined the Hollandse Club to become part of the active squash section which is a fun, interactive part of the Club. Singapore has been a wonderful experience; meeting people of different cultural backgrounds from every part of the globe and, of course, located in the perfect place for regional travel.

If you have an interest in playing squash, please join us any Saturday afternoon; we can always use new squash players. You may find a whole new world open up!

The Vietnamese spring rolls are the secret to the Hollandse Club menu (deep fried, of course). The best way to enjoy Singapore and the Hollandse Club? Don't sit back and watch. Get involved! Erik Mul My name is Erik and I’m married to Noelle and we have two children (Sophie & Sven) who attend the Hollandse School. We are from the Netherlands and moved to Singapore in 2013, where I was tasked with setting up the treasury function for Heineken in the Asia Pacific Region. Obviously, I am an enthusiastic squash player and I try to be on court a few times per week, if work allows!

Ross Stokes I'm a Kiwi from Surf City, New Zealand and married with three children. I've been in Singapore for ten years. I love the ease and simplicity of living in Singapore and watching this young nation evolve into a regional and global powerhouse. I appreciate the level of planning across all aspects of development and am especially pleased to see the level of investment that has gone into the arts and sport in the last decade. I played squash against Fred Saarloos in a league match in 2010 and he and Gautam Murkeji persuaded me that Hollandse Club would be better place to play squash and drink red wine. And they were right! My favourite area is the squash courts; chatting with buddies. I joined the Squash Committee to help out wherever I can. Clubs are a great place to meet people and develop friendships through the various activities they offer.

We really enjoy living in Singapore and we feel the lifestyle is pretty relaxed. We also enjoy the opportunities that Singapore offers; the ability to explore this part of the world for holidays. When we came to Singapore we were looking for a club where we as a family could feel at home and where everyone WWW.HOLLANDSECLUB.ORG.SG | HOLLANDSE CLUB 63

Smoothies After a solid workout you need to replenish the energy and water that you lost. Of course you can grab some ready made sugary drink, but why not pick a healthier option: a freshly made smoothie? If you do your workout at the Club, you are in luck; we have a good selection of fresh juices and

smoothies at the bar. But you can make them just as easily at home! All you need is a blender and a wellstocked fruit and vegetable drawer. Just toss, blend, pour and serve immediately.

Jaxs' Bistro Opens at the Terrace

dining scene. Last year, Jacky felt it was time for a change, a new challenge. When the Hollandse Club approached her for an eventual take-over of our Food & Beverage outlets, she decided that the time was right and that the Club was a perfect match for her new project and objectives. Jacky tells me she thinks the Hollandse Club has a beautiful and unique setting and sees a huge potential in both the venue and all the space. With more than twenty years of experience and networking along with the Club’s commitment to rejuvenating the direction of the Club, she hopes to elevate F&B quality and service.

Meet Dutch born-and-raised Jacky (Jaxs) Stevens, whose engaging personality and personable customer relations makes her a welcome addition to the Club. Having arrived in Singapore in 1997 as a fresh graduate from the famous Swiss Hotel Management School, Les Roches, Jacky has never looked back. Jacky has opened numerous successful eateries and bars in Singapore. As of the 1st of August Jacky embarked on her latest project by opening Jaxs' Bistro & Pizzeria right in the heart of our Club. August has been a transition month with the full launch being in September. I thought that an interview would allow you all to get to know Jacky a little more; so in a relaxed atmosphere at the Club’s Terrace we had a conversation, accompanied by Jacky’s favourite drink. When I ask her to tell me a bit more about her background in food and beverage (F&B), she laughs and says she’s not really used to being the centre of attention. In her opinion the perfect example of an F&B manager is one who aims to make her guests happy and provide them with the best experience ever!

When I ask her about her secret touch that made her previous businesses successful, she tells me that anyone can sell a beer or a hamburger but it’s the personal touches that make it special and unique. At Jaxs' Bistro & Pizzeria you will be greeted as a friend, brought to your table as a guest and you will experience the ambiance of your second living room. There will be a wide choice of dishes on the menu, varying between western and local dishes. Chef Kin Juffri, who has worked with Jacky for more than eighteen years, is helming the kitchen team. He builds the cornerstone of their success on offering consistently good food such as their homemade signature pizzas. Everything is freshly made in-house. Regular Members who are addicted to the Dutch dishes on our current menu should not worry! Chef Raymond, our previous Chef, has passed the recipes to Jacky and she will make sure you will still be able to enjoy our delicious bitterballen on a sunny afternoon! Besides the new menu, Jaxs' Bistro & Pizzeria will also offer outside catering, delivery and special events such as a Wednesday pub quiz night. Of course, as always, Members will have priority and you will still enjoy 10% discount on all dishes and service charges will be waived.

She tells me that she moved to Singapore when she was only twenty four years old. Already an adventurer and experienced in hospitality, she sent out her resumé to companies all over the world, but it was Harry’s at Boat Quay who hired her. A few years later Jaxs started her very own bar called Bisous. She later sold the bar and worked at F&B group, Les Amis, and launched their successful Pepperoni concept at Greenwood. Again, it was time for Jacky to strike out on her own, and with her partners she opened Picotin, now a staple of the Bukit Timah

DID YOU KNOW? Jaxs’ pizzas are their signature dish on the menu?

Doors have been painted, we did a big cleaning of the tennis courts and replaced the nets at courts 1, 2, we have tightened the windbreakers and we also did a big spring cleaning at our office and were amazed of the big pile of items we had to throw.
