EDITOR’S MESSAGE
To those returning, I hope you have all had a good break. As is usual at this time of year, we are missing some old faces who have returned home or moved on to their next posting, and we are discovering new friends. To those who have recently joined us, welcome. I hope you enjoy living in Singapore and being part of our multicultural Hollandse Club family. The Club has been quiet for those of us who stayed in Singapore, although the National Day celebrations this year were especially exciting. This has been my children’s mid-year ‘winter’ break (rather an anomaly in this tropical heat!), so we limited our excursions to short ones such as a long weekend at Legoland in Johor. If you have been somewhere interesting or done something exciting, please do write in to the Magazine and share it with us. In this issue you can read about our wonderful trip to Chiang Mai (on a previous holiday), written by my son, Nihilan. In the Magazine you can find out about exciting upcoming events at the Club - set a reminder for the September Fair, discover when you can dance with zombies (if you dare) or make a date to laugh with Carolien Borgers. And we have the event reports from the last couple of months; read on to find out who won the Fathers’ Day Clash, why Jitze Elzinga is special, how polite the ladies’ swim group really is and how the squash tournaments went, not to mention what happened during the summer camps as well as much more. This being Singapore, nothing is complete without a little renovation now and then. The Club (as you must have discovered by now) has taken the advantage of the downtime to have her own facelift. There has been surprisingly little disruption apart from the rearranged seating and a few extra games of hide-and-seek when trying to round up the kids. Join us to celebrate the reopening of our grand old lady in September. As a Club we picked one of my favourite colours for the makeover, and I’m looking forward to seeing what it looks like. I’m sure I’ll see you around the Club; maybe I’ll meet you at the Welcome Back Party, or maybe you’ll catch me in the pool for the four-day event swimming, which the kids and I try to do every year. In the meantime, enjoy our magazine! Happy reading! Nina Gunasingham WWW.HOLLANDSECLUB.ORG.SG | HOLLANDSE CLUB 3

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Fellow Members, The year 2015 is moving so quickly; it’s already August, traditionally the time of year to welcome a lot of new families to our Club. We hope that these new members will enjoy our Club as much as we all do. As members we can all help these new members a bit to feel at home: I think we all remember the first time we arrived at the Club: new country, no friends yet, swelteringly hot and some screaming kids … With this in mind, I would like to remind you about our member referral programme: refer a friend and enjoy up to SGD 400 worth of F&B vouchers and have a chance to win tickets for two to Bali. As you all have noticed, the Terrace renovations are almost at their end. In a couple of weeks, the Terrace will be fully open again with nice seating areas for everybody; I am sure it will bring a great new atmosphere to the Club and I really look forward to it. We will organise a Welcome Back BBQ together with the opening of the new Terrace on September 13th. Please mark this date in your diaries - it will be a fun afternoon for everybody. As you all know, the Terrace is not the only part of the Club that needed to be renovated: we discussed this during our last AGM. This has been the Main Committee’s top priority since we started in March 2014 and, as promised, I will soon inform you about our future plans for the Club. We are still looking for volunteers for the various committees, such as organising events; helping the F&B committee; joining our Library team; welcoming new members. Please feel free to contact me, or our General Manager, if you would like to participate. As mentioned many times before, a Club cannot exist without volunteers. I hope to see you all on the 13th of September at the Welcome Back BBQ and opening of the new Terrace. Warm regards, Nienke Nauta-Kuipers President

GM’S MESSAGE
General Manager: Daniel Van Dijk 6461 1103 gm@hollandseclub.org.sg Office Manager & HR Executive: Trecia Pang 6461 1160 hr@hollandseclub.org.sg F&B Manager: Alejandro Puno 6461 1136 fnbmgr@hollandseclub.org.sg
Dear Members, Welcome back! And a warm welcome to our new members! Thank you for joining the Hollandse Club or deciding to renew your membership; I hope you are all enjoying our unique and very active club, and that all members of your family have great new experiences and make new friends. The Hollandse Club is all about being for members by members so we welcome your ideas, suggestions and involvement. During the past two months, we have been busy with various renovation projects at the Club. Not only the Terrace, which will be officially reopened on September 13th but also other areas around the Club have received some much-needed attention. We have done various painting jobs around the Club and will continue to do so in the months to come. The poolside showers have been retrofitted and we installed de-humidifiers in the Club rooms and library to bring down the humidity levels. New beer taps have been installed in the Tradewinds Bar and the Vietnamese kitchen has moved, so from September onwards all Vietnamese dishes will be available from Monday to Sunday for lunch and dinner. We have also made some other changes. The Junior and Puppy Rooms have been rearranged and renamed the Kids’ Rooms. The Kids’ Rooms were renovated, have become more age-appropriate and there’s more space for the bigger age group of 5 to 11-year-olds to play and watch videos. We have also introduced the Kids’ Club on Friday afternoons. Every Friday, except when there’s another event planned, we will organize some activities for children aged 4-11 from 4pm until 6pm. Please check out the schedule further down in the magazine. The dispensing of pool towels has moved from the lobby to the Pool Bar. The Reception will no longer be providing you with towels. Instead, they will focus more on tending to members’ enquiries, Club room guests and ensuring that walk-in guests are welcomed and registered properly and court bookings are duly noted. We have delicious Chef’s Specials lined up for you, and we are now also offering Sunday brunches on the new Terrace. Please tell your friends that the Terrace is open for non-members from Monday to Friday from 8am until 3pm. Every Monday through Thursday from 5pm to 9pm we have happy hour in the Tradewinds Bar, on Fridays we will have themed evenings and the Comedy Club Asia is back every month to stage a Comedy Night at the Hollandse Club. On September 19th Dutch comedian Carolien Borgers will perform at the Hollandse Club, and we are organizing a lot more exciting events like the September Fair and the Dragon Boating Event in the coming weeks, so please check out the calendar and save the dates! With kind regards,

IN MEMORIAM
During the summer holidays, one of our senior Chefs-de -Partie, Mr Lim Eng Hoo, passed away. Mr Lim Eng Hoo worked at the Hollandse Club for almost 15 years. On 28th June, Mr Lim died peacefully after a short illness. Lim Eng Hoo was the Chef who made the Club’s famous bitterballen and poffertjes for many years and was often on the Terrace on Friday evenings to carve the Shawarma. He was a quiet and dedicated man who was much appreciated by his colleagues. He will be missed. Mr Lim Eng Hoo left behind a wife and two teenage children. The Club has been supporting Mr Lim’s family in this difficult time.

BI-ANNUAL EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR: Ms Anna Liza Mendoza
Anna Mendoza, one of our receptionists, was recently selected as Employee of the half year. Anna was rewarded for her excellence in performance and work attitude. Anna has been with the Hollandse Club since 2013 and we look forward to her continued contribution, service and smile.
Anna Liza Mendoza is one of those friendly faces at Reception who always has a cheerful greeting for you as you enter the Club. She was surprised to find that she had been nominated as Bi-Annual Employee of the Year and, in fact, initially thought it was a joke! She has been at the Club for just under three-and-a-half years, where she works six days a week. Her favourite aspect of working here is seeing different people every day, especially children. Anna is from the Philippines and is the youngest of three children. Her parents live in their hometown, which is a three-hour drive from Manila, the capital. Anna stayed with her grandmother and aunt in the capital city, where she pursued her studies. When she is not at the Club, Anna prefers to relax at home, bake, watch movies or go out with friends. She calls home every week to stay in touch with her family, friends and previous colleagues. Anna is always excited when one of them comes over for a holiday, so she meets them at the airport and shows them around; she is planning for her parents to have a vacation here in Singapore. While living in Singapore, Anna has become more independent; she’s learning new things and she’s having fun travelling and meeting new friends. Anna is planning to work at the Club for a long time, and is grateful that it was the first company that gave her a career opportunity.

Monkey Business
In recent months, the Hollandse Club has been receiving almost daily visits by a family of monkeys. Usually, monkeys move from one forested area to another following the fruiting pattern of trees. It appears this family has established themselves in the Camden Park area.
Unfortunately, the staff of the Club can’t do much about the persistent presence of the monkeys except try to chase them away. However, the monkeys have become more bold and aggressive in recent weeks and some have even taken up swimming lessons. The monkeys are protected by law and we have been in contact with the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) about the situation. We have asked AVA for assistance to catch the monkeys and they have placed cages around the Club to trap them but so far all we caught were civet cats, the renowned producers of the prized Kopi Luwak! (See picture) After much discussion with AVA, we have now engaged a wildlife expert who will try to catch the monkeys. We would like to give you some pointers on what to do when you or your children see any monkeys approaching. 1. STAY CALM, DO NOT SCREAM, POINT OR THROW ANYTHING AT THEM 2. DO NOT APPROACH THE MONKEYS 3. AVOID EYE CONTACT 4. MOVE AWAY AND ASK THE STAFF FOR ASSISTANCE 5. DO NOT FEED THE MONKEYS OR LEAVE ANY FOOD BEHIND For further information, please see the AVA advisory flyers on the notice boards around the Club.
Pool Towels Pool towels are now available from the Pool Bar • Please sign in with your membership number and fill in how many towels you take • Please return your towel in the towel baskets at the Pool Bar or the lockers outside the changing rooms • Please do not leave your towels behind on your chair, in the changing rooms or other areas around the Club • Please do not take towels home or to the Club rooms • Please approach any of the staff if pool towels need replenishing

RENOVATION PROJECTS: The New Terrace
Since July, we have been very busy with various renovation and maintenance projects around the Club to improve the facilities. The Terrace received a much-needed revamp and now boasts a new wet-bar, new lighting fixtures, new awnings and fresh coats of paint. The old planters were removed, service stations were re-clad with timber and a new structure was erected at the lower terrace. We also carried out works in other areas such as the kitchen, the passageway outside the Rotterdam Room, hotel rooms 7 to 13, and the pool area. The purpose of all these renovations is to improve the experience of our members and guests, and to ensure that our facilities remain in good condition. During the renovations it was business as usual and it was great to see the staff and members improvise and take all the inconveniences in their stride. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

CAR DECALS Please ensure that your car has the latest (round) car decal. We are phasing out the old decals, which means that from September 1st old decals are no longer considered valid and you will be stopped upon entry to the Club. The reason for this is that there are currently too many different types of old car decals in circulation and we need to determine which cars belong to (active) members of the Club. Please approach the reception or membership (membership@hollandseclub.org.sg) for issuance of a new car decal.
VOLUNTEERS WANTED With the departure of some of our members, we also lose some of our valued and much needed volunteers. Volunteering for the Club is a great way to meet new people and support your Club. Currently there are several committees looking for new volunteers. MY CHIANG MAI HOLIDAY by Nihilan (age 11)
My Chiang Mai holiday was a blast ranging from awesome hotels to tiger parks. When we got to Chiang Mai we went straight to the hotel. I thought it was going to be a boring old hotel, but it turned out to be quite the opposite, with amazing rooms and a miniature village inside the premises. I could have spent the whole holiday in that personal villa but there are so many amazing things to do in the amazing city of Chiang Mai, for example, going to the Tiger Kingdom and just walking around the Dhara Dhevi (the hotel). The first thing we did was we went to the Tiger Kingdom, which is a very interactive park, depending on your age you can actually interact with the tigers. The third day of our lovely stay in Chiang Mai we went high into the mountains to an elephant camp where you get to spend a whole day with the majestic creatures, you get to feed them, ride them and also bathe them; it is indeed a remarkable experience. On the 19th of December (my birthday) my friend Sebby came to the hotel to have dinner and to take me to their house for a sleepover. On the last day of our trip, we enjoyed the amazing hotel and had a good time at the mall. We also had room service and they also have their own movie library. We slept well every night and we are really impressed with the service of the Dhara Dhevi. If you’re there on a short-term holiday like me then you can visit the attraction sites, but if you’re there for a long-term holiday then you can do other interesting things like going to Central Festival mall, which is a very nice and modern mall to hang out in. Our stay in Chiang Mai was exceptional because of the amazing attractions of Chiang Mai and the amazing service of the Dhara Dhevi.
Have you had an exciting holiday experience that you would like to see in the Magazine? Please send your stories to editor@hollandseclub.org.sg
LEGO / KAPLA DONATIONS WELCOME The Kids Rooms cater to children aged 1-11. For the age group 5-11 we are looking for some new toys. We have plenty of Duplo LEGO but no LEGO for older children and we would also like to introduce KAPLA. If your kids have LEGO or KAPLA that they don’t play with anymore, please consider donating it to the Club. Donations big and small are welcome. Please approach our Kids’ Rooms attendants if you have any questions.

Dutch education with an international dimension
IPC
The HSL is a thriving Dutch school with an international dimension. We offer an excellent educational program with a combined Dutch and international curriculum.
IPC is an integral, thematic and creative primary curriculum where children gain an international perspective while learning to work together, to investigate, to make connections and to find solutions. HSL is accredited at mastering level.
SCL Structural Cooperative Learning is an inviting, interactive and effective teaching approach, where students of different aptitude levels work together to achieve the lesson’s objective.
ICT Our program encourages students to manage, discover and create while using the computer and other digital media. This benefits our academic curriculum and helps prepare our students for secondary education.
English The English language curriculum runs concurrent to the Dutch language program and aims to teach children English as a first language.

KIDS’ ROOMS!
The Puppy Room and Junior Room have been re-named the Kids’ Rooms and have received a bit of a makeover. The rooms have been rearranged so that the larger group of 5 to 11-year-olds have a bigger space to play and watch videos, and the entrance has moved to the second door. We have placed the age-relevant toys in each room and are still looking for some new toys for the 5 - 11 age group . If you have any LEGO (not Duplo) or Kapla that your children do not play with any longer, please consider donating it to the Club. Kids’ movie DVDs in English suitable for 5 to 12-year-olds are also welcome! Please give our Kids’ Rooms attendants clear instructions about whether your small child(ren) is/are allowed to exit the Kids’ Rooms by themselves or with a sibling. As a rule small children under five are not allowed to leave the Kids’ Rooms without adult supervision. Also, please leave your membership number and contact details each time you bring your small children to the Kids’ Rooms so, in case of distress, we can contact you. During most hours of the day, there’s only one attendant in the rooms. If children want to be brought to their parent(s) they will have to wait until a replacement can come in. We seek your understanding in this.

FEATURES
IMMUNISATIONS By Dr Judy Schmidt
Immunisations are one of the success stories of modern medicine. Vaccines reduce the risk of infection by working with the body’s natural defences to help it safely develop immunity to disease. It is one of the best ways parents can help protect infants and children from potentially harmful diseases. Although there may be minor differences in the recommended immunisation schedules among developed countries, all are designed to work best with the child’s immune system early in life when they are most vulnerable conferring protection before they are exposed. Recommended Childhood Immunisations: Hepatitis B vaccine prevents this form of hepatitis and the severe liver damage that can occur later on in life. Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis (DTaP/Tdap) vaccine protects from Diphtheria (a serious infection of the throat that can block the airway), Tetanus (a nerve disease caused by bacteria that get into a wound), and Pertussis (Whooping cough, a dangerous disease especially for babies, which can sometimes be fatal). Haemophilus Influenzae type b (HIB) vaccine prevents several life-threatening diseases in young children such as meningitis, epiglottitis, pneumonia, and ear infections. Pneumococcal (PCV) vaccine protects against 13 types of pneumococcal bacteria that cause pneumonia, meningitis, blood stream infections and ear infections. Polio (IPV) vaccine - protects children from this now rare but crippling disease. Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccine protects from a wide range of serious illnesses including pneumonia, seizures, deafness, meningitis, and birth defects. Measles is a highly contagious viral disease and, in recent years, there has been a rise in the number of measles cases. Because outbreaks do occur and our family do travel internationally, it is especially important for children to be immunised against this. There is no scientific basis for any link between MMR and autism. Rotavirus (RV) vaccine prevents the most common cause of infection in the intestines sometimes causing severe diarrhea and dehydration. Recommended for young infants. BCG vaccine against tuberculosis is recommended for all babies born in Singapore. Parents are advised to discuss the indication for BCG for their individual child if they are planning to reside in Asia for prolong period of time. Varicella (chickenpox) vaccine protects against potential serious complications such as pneumonia, brain disease, and even death. Two doses of this vaccine is 98% effective in preventing chickenpox, so if your child gets chickenpox, it is a milder form reducing the chance of missed work and school, medical costs, and getting shingles later in life. Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine prevents cervical cancer and genital warts. Recommended for both girls and boys age 11 or 12 years. Influenza vaccine is recommended for all healthy children age six months to 18 years. Those less than two years old are at greater risk of getting severely ill. Caregivers of young children should also get the influenza vaccine each year. Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccine protects from illnesses due to contaminated food or water. Recommended for children both living and travelling in Asia. Meningococcal vaccine - Meningococcal disease is rare and not prevalent in Singapore. Meningitis C vaccine is recommended for young infants and children who travel regularly to the Northern Hemisphere, especially over the autumn/winter seasons. In the USA, MCV4 is routinely recommended for all 11 to 12-year-olds, teens starting high school or young adults before they move into the dormitory. Vaccines have been shown to be effective and safe. Ensuring that our children are current with their immunisation is one of the best ways of protecting them from serious infections and fostering good health. MEET DUTCH COMEDIAN:
CAROLIEN BORGERS On the 19th of September the famous Dutch comedian, Carolien Borgers, will perform her show “Zeker
Weten” at the Hollandse Club. She is famous for her beautiful songs, never-ending energy, and the ironic way in which she approaches her topics. We interviewed Carolien to find out a little bit more about her. Have you ever been to Singapore (or the region) before? If so, describe your experience? I visited Singapore about 20 years ago. Friends of my parents were living there for five years and were actually members of the Hollandse Club. I remember the clean streets and I was very focused on not throwing my chewing gum in the street; afraid of ending up in prison for the rest of my life, I guess! I also recall the beautiful pool and the club sandwich I had for lunch every day. Haha! How do you imagine the expats who are members of the Hollandse Club? I have often performed for expats, for example, in Qatar. Women over there are only allowed to use their husband’s credit card if he has given written permission. I think that’s the expat life you only imagine in your worst nightmares. When I think about the expats at the Hollandse Club, I imagine a close group of tanned Dutch, who share their passion for the Dutch bitterbal and have fun at the pool. Can you reveal one of the topics you will talk about in your show? My show “Zeker Weten” is about “how much we can affect our own life”. In what way can we give shape to our lives and how do we cope with the fact that sometimes we just can’t do or change anything about it. It’s based on my trip to Los Angeles and China, my own youth and current topics. I have also invited a guitar player, who will give a musical touch to the show.

ARTIST IN FOCUS: ASTRID DAHL
The opening of the exhibition from Astrid Dahl is on 4th September in the Tradewinds Bar.
Astrid Dahl is primarily a contemporary landscape artist but at times straddles the surreal or abstract genres. Her work delves into our connections of texture, heart-felt longings and emotive themes to the land. Therefore, her work is hard to place as she treats each painting as a unique piece … a unique experience. She uses colours of the earth, together with sensual textures, to map the layering of the earth, in both ancient depths and modern growth. Her work is filled with poetry, myth, and perspective dualities. She explores the conceptual thought of ‘man’s’ yearning to be connected to nature and pays homage to its beauty, diversity and abundance. She analyses the many moods and complex spiritual nuances of both land and sea, from the dry desert country of Australia to the lush, steamy forests and seashores of the tropics. She has had many corporate commissions and awards, which recently include being accepted in the prestigious Australian John Leslie Art Award for Landscape ’08. Astrid’s work is represented all over Australia. She has had numerous exhibitions and is part of many private and corporate art collections worldwide, including Spain, New Guinea, New York, Los Angeles, Canada, Nevada (USA), Hong Kong, London and Singapore.
Because an education is all about communication At GESS, we appreciate the importance of learning your mother tongue and understand that it can be especially hard for children living overseas. That’s why our European Section, where English is the language of instruction, offers a comprehensive range of native language courses designed to help students learn their home language despite the distance. So whether you’re from Holland, Denmark or Germany, your children can study their native tongue at school.

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK A trip back in time...
SELETAR AIRPORT
By Nina Gunasingham
When I read in the Straits Times recently that Seletar Airport is to be upgraded, I was saddened to think that yet another slice of a more relaxed way of life is about to fall to the ravages of modernisation (I do have a wide nostalgic streak). I have only been through Seletar once, about eight years ago, when I caught a prop plane (the planes are too small and the propellers too noisy for Changi) to Tioman Island for a weekend escape with my sister, and so I decided to return to pay my respects.
22 HOLLANDSE CLUB | WWW.HOLLANDSECLUB.ORG.SG
FEATURES The road to Seletar Airport used to wend between the quiet gardens of the colonial houses of Seletar Camp, whereas now you have to navigate the newly built roads of the upcoming industrial park to discover the tiny car-park nestled behind new buildings and the odd tree or two that still stand. The passenger section of Seletar is essentially an air-conditioned corridor: a long, narrow building that you can only enter if you are checking in or disembarking a flight. As you walk through the sliding glass doors into Departures, you are immediately faced with the single check-in counter, and so I was not able to explore the building further. There are no fast food restaurants or expensive souvenir shops there, tempting you to spend the last of your foreign (or domestic) currency. If you are seeing off or meeting passengers, you have to wait outside; the glass door at the Arrivals end has a ‘no entry’ sign on it. But the wait is pleasant, if you’re willing to adjust to a less hectic pace of life. Seletar is quiet and peaceful - except for the tall modern buildings sprouting around it that are replacing the former enclave of black-and-white houses. Small airports like this seem to me to have more character than large, impersonal ones, such as Changi with all their hustle and bustle, however efficient the big international airports may be at moving the masses.
“But the wait is
pleasant, if you’re willing to adjust to a less hectic pace of life.”
Although I couldn’t go inside, I could catch glimpses through the windows of the tree-lined walkway to the tarmac (which is not something you would see at Changi, where you trudge to your plane down air-conditioned aerobridges), and it made me nostalgic. I grew up in sub-Saharan Africa in the 1970s, when aerobridges were new and rare and, therefore, exciting; but when you walked out of the airport building onto the tarmac of the apron and climbed that metal staircase - with the engines screaming in your ear - with each footfall that rang out, you knew you were climbing to adventure.

EMPOWERING FOREIGN DOMESTIC WORKERS WITH A FINANCIAL EDUCATION. By Lisa Edmondson
There are currently 222,500 Foreign Domestic Workers employed in Singapore (source: Ministry of Manpower). Since 2006, more than 2,700 of these women have studied at Aidha, a training organisation where domestic workers can study on their Sunday day off and learn practical skills like money management, computer skills, leadership and entrepreneurship. Those who are ambitious can also write their own business plans and eventually start their own business when they return home. We’d like to share a couple of Aidha success stories with you from the Dutch community in Singapore. For the past five years, Merry Engana has been the domestic worker for the Fritschy Bilkes family, where she looks after the household and cares for Sam (7), Yop (5) and Pippa (2) while parents Joost and Barbara both work full-time: Joost at Credit Suisse and Barbara at her interior design company, Make Room. Merry grew up in Ilo Ilo, Philippines, but her family later moved to Mindanao. She came to Singapore to work as a helper after graduating from high school. Almost all of Singapore’s domestic workers send most of their earnings home to their families and Merry is no exception, sending almost all her pay home to support her siblings and her widowed mother. But often, the women don’t save anything for their own futures. Barbara said, “We saw that Merry was always paying for her family to study, so we asked her what she planned on doing after she finished paying for everyone else’s education and her money is gone.” They told her they thought she was pretty smart and she won’t want to be a helper for the rest of her life, so they started looking for a school she could attend as a permit holder. Through a friend at Credit Suisse, they learned about the classes at Aidha and signed her up for the first module of classes, offering to pay the fees. When Merry first started at Aidha she was hesitant, particularly about the computer skills required. She says, “We didn’t have computers in my high school at home, and I didn’t know anything about Excel or Powerpoint.” But she started to make friends and enjoy herself, and after only five classes, she signed up for the second module and started to think about a business plan. Merry’s initial business plan idea was to expand her mom’s canteen back in Mindanao. “But Joost and Barbara challenged me to think about something that I would really be excited to do, and that’s when I decided to plan for a nail-art salon and training school for nail artists,” she explains. While she was writing her business case, she also practiced on the kids and her friends, and started seeing inspiration in menus in Singapore salons, and even designs on bags. Throughout her studies at Aidha, Barbara and Joost encouraged Merry. They say, “Merry is very sweet, and initially she was reluctant to ask for any help, but we made it clear to her that we wanted to support her. Sometimes we had to push her to go to class when she wanted to place our family’s needs above her own. One time, we had our wedding anniversary and we were going to leave the kids with friends, so she offered to stay home instead. But we told her, If you aren’t going to class, we aren’t going away for our anniversary.” When the time came for Merry’s graduation ceremony from Aidha last November, the whole family came to cheer her on. “We are incredibly proud of her. All the girls worked so hard to find the strength to give up that one day off to study at Aidha,” Barbara said. In addition to completing her plan for Dimpz Nail Salon, Merry was chosen as one of the seven finalists out of more than 100 graduating students. And, after presenting her plan to a team of financial services professionals, she gave a public speech in front of 110 Aidha graduates and their families. Since then, Merry has continued to refine her business plan through the Aidha Alumni Development Programme, and was recently selected to receive 12 months of personal mentoring from a marketing executive. 24 HOLLANDSE CLUB | WWW.HOLLANDSECLUB.ORG.SG
FEATURES Some families may worry that if they help their domestic workers to get an education, they will want to leave the family. But Merry plans to stay in Singapore for at least a few more years before returning to Mindanao to start her business. And, in the meantime, she will continue to work with the Bilkes Fritschy family, and plans to volunteer in the Aidha campus office every other Sunday to gain more business experience. When asked why they feel Aidha is important for domestic workers, Joost is unequivocal: “The importance of Aidha cannot be stressed enough! Aidha gives the helpers a future. Nothing more, nothing less, by educating them, giving them confidence, self-respect and guidance with regards to their business plans or educational aspirations. Barbara says, “We were so lucky to have been born in the Netherlands where a good education is a basic right for everyone. And we are so fortunate to have someone we trust so fully to look after our kids. Merry is a part of our family and we are partners.” Led by a small office staff and a team of Aidha alumni who help run the Sunday campus, all Aidha’s classes are led by volunteer mentors from across the Singaporean and international business community. One of those mentors is Dutch businessman, Roald Meijer. Roald says, “The best part of being a mentor is seeing the ladies grow. In the beginning, they sometimes struggle to understand how all the aspects of the curriculum link together, but the moment this clicks in their minds is great to see. Suddenly they start writing their business plans, and they really want to hear your opinion. As a mentor, I find this very interesting and fun, as it gives me a way to transfer my business knowledge to them and see them develop their dreams further. I learned way more than I had anticipated, not just about pig farming, bubble tea shops and such, but also about cultural differences between the Netherlands and the students’ home country. I never thought about the possible impact of a typhoon on a business for instance – so I needed to think about different examples to teach them to which they can relate, this means that I need to understand more about their countries and culture, about their way of living.” At the same time that Aidha’s classes build confidence and self-esteem, they also achieve measurable positive results. About 40% of Aidha students start their own small businesses when they eventually return back to their home countries; 70% invest in productive assets, i.e. livestock, land and buildings; 80% save monthly or every other month; and 99% transfer the knowledge they have learnt to their families and friends, creating a significant multiplier effect. Aidha Venture Club mentor, Niek van Veen, recently moved from Singapore to Phnom Penh, but still stays connected to Aidha and has started to get involved with Impact Hub, which is a global incubator organisation for social enterprises in Cambodia and will soon begin teaching marketing workshops for local entrepreneurs. Niek said, “I always loved the positive energy from the students and mentoring gave a real boost to my weeks.” If you would like to find out more about Aidha because you would be interested in volunteering, enrolling or sponsoring a domestic worker, or making a donation to Aidha, go to www.aidha.org or sign up to attend one of Aidha’s monthly orientation programmes. Aidha is a Singapore-registerd charity and an approved Institution of a Public Character (IPC) and, as such, is authorised to receive tax-deductible donations. Donations received before 31 December 2015 will benefit from a 300% tax rebate. Travel with a personal travel agent with Dutch expat roots When we left the Netherlands for my husband’s job at Unilever in 2009, I stopped working. After 14 years of working in financial services, I thought it was a great opportunity for a change. I love traveling, so after experiencing a lot and studying Tourism Management, I got the idea to use my passion to launch BeenInAsia in 2012. BeenInAsia.com began offering Vietnam as a destination, followed by Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar. Singapore and Thailand are the last to be added soon (since we live in Bangkok now). I want to be a specialist, knowing and feeling what is happening, as changes occur rapidly in this region and I constantly want to find new service providers of good quality. In the course of time expats became my main clientele, often families with children or working couples, and their friends and family, not having the time to organize their trip. I can empathize with their situation, as I travel in the same way myself. Most expats want a decent bed to sleep in and get authentic experiences, which are often a combination of culture, activities and beach. When composing a journey I look closely at the needs, ages and budgets of clients and the program is often a puzzle, sometimes with more than one tour operator, as a result getting the perfect trip for a client. One client wants to walk through the rice fields in northern Vietnam and see the coloured minority markets, sleeping in a cosy bed in a river lodge at an undiscovered village. Another wants to discover Cambodia by an old jeep or - to keep it fun for kids - a temple tour by bicycle. In Myanmar, you can make a varied program for young and old - despite the numerous temples - for example cycling, taking boats or a local ferry. If we ask our children what they found the most special holiday in the region, they undoubtedly say: Myanmar, and in particular the temple plain of Bagan. You could say it’s not really a “kids’ thing” but it can be true! Laos is also a very interesting country. Many people only think of temples and monks, but this country has so much to offer! Cycling, kayaking, caves, jungle, minorities, boating on the Mekong, planting rice with the locals. A perfect destination for a combination of culture, nature and action! I can give you the solution for the most personalized trip that you want. By an expat for expats. This is how – through BeenInAsia – I distinguish myself from other tour operators. NEDERLANDS DANS THEATER 2 An evening of five works
About NDT 2
Photos by Rahi Rezvani
Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) is one of the world’s leading contemporary dance companies. In 1978, NDT founded their junior division, NDT 2, to develop talent and prepare dancers around the world for their further careers. NDT 2 aims to acquaint its dancers with a lexicon of dance languages, and works with young choreographers to offer its dancers the opportunity to work within a range of styles and genres. Their varied repertoire consists of work by established choreographers and upcoming talents. Today, both companies of Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT 1 and NDT 2) are celebrated as two of the world’s most distinctive dance ensembles. “NDT 2 is a distinct phenomenon, and phenomenal.”– The Independent, UK “A night of superlatives...its ranks are filled with prodigiously talented dancers.”– The Straits Times “Every time NDT 2 hits our stages, the usual superlatives fall flat in speechless admiration at 16 dancers, who can handle anything the top-ranking choreographers care to task them with.”– The Herald, UK

Father’s Day Clash:
Daddy & I are the Best! Sunday, 21st June 2015
On 21st of June, the majority of the world celebrated Father’s Day. What a perfect day and occasion to organize a special event for fathers with their kids at the Hollandse Club! Because how cool is it to have fun with your dad? The day’s mission was to collect as many points as possible through playing different games. Seven tough papas had accepted this challenge together with their (in total) fourteen kids. The daddy-andchildren teams threw as many balls as possible into baskets; ran as fast as they could with their legs tied to each other; ran with a balloon between their bellies; dived to the bottom of the swimming pool to gather coins; and tried to fill up buckets with as much water as possible in a short period of time. In the end, father, Kirk, and his daughter, Elena, took off with the trophy, as they had the most points, but the best thing was the fun that the participants had together as families! A big thank you to all daddies and kids for joining, and the mothers for their support!

In cooperation with some excellent companies, the Hollandse Club offers a range of daily summer camps during the summer holidays. The first three have already taken place. It was aquaDucks who provided the first camp: Water Fun Day! The focus was on improving your swimming skills, but, of course, there was also a lot of time for games and splashing fun! On 1st July, twelve kids joined the Active Sports Day from Sport 4 Kids. As the name of the camp suggests, this day was all about trying different sports and playing a variety of cool games. The last camp was Abrakadoodle’s Creative Art Day. It turned out to be a girls-only camp, where they each created three beautiful artworks, all accompanied by the highly qualified trainers. It was great to see all the kids having so much fun during the camps. We hope they had a great time!

The whole idea is to give kids the opportunity to participate in approachable games and (creative) activities during the time that they are at the Club. It’s also a way of getting to know other kids, too, and have fun with each other! And it’s also nice for the parents, as we take good care of their kids for a couple of hours. The previous month, we organised a bingo, where the kids could win cool prices but, of course, it was all about playing an excited game. On another Friday, we watched “Alpha and Omega”, an adventure movie about two wolves from opposite ends of their packs, thrown together into a foreign land and need each other to return home. On 24th July, we played all kinds of games with the kids, and on the last Friday of July, we screened another movie. This time the kids watched Sammy 2. As we had such a positive response, we will run the Kids’ Club again in the upcoming months. Read about which activities we have in mind right here in this magazine!

SWIMMING Dear Members,
We hope everybody had a great summer holiday! The aquaDucks swim team is ready to have a splashing good time with the kids and adults. Our program consists of teaching babies (six months onwards), toddlers, preschoolers, learn-to-swim children, development training, competition training, aqua-aerobics and adult sessions. We teach all ages and levels from six months onwards: beginners to super-advanced! Swimming is a life-saving skill, good exercise and a lot of fun. Our aquaDucks motto is: COME JOIN THE FUN! If you would like to sign up for swimming lessons, kindly fill in the registration form on the Hollandse Club website. We will get back to you to invite you for a trial lesson. As well as welcoming existing members back from the summer holidays, I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome all our new members and hope to see everyone at the poolside for a splashing good time. Jitze Elzinga did his Snorkel 3 Diploma exam on Friday 24th July. He is the first at the Club to get all 15 Dutch diplomas. As well as the ABC Award, he got Zwemvaardigheid 1,2,3 / Survival 1,2,3 / Water Polo 1,2,3 and Snorkel 1,2,3. Great job Jitze! During the last training session before the school break, the ladies’ swim group played a water polo game. Besides the many fouls (pushing each other under water) it was a lot of fun and a nice closer for the ladies. New!!!! Aqua Fit

SQUASH - THE END OF THE SEASON SPELLS OUT CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
The squash season goes from September 1st to August 31st.
As in most clubs around town, the Hollandse Club hosts its Club Championships just before all our expat families escape for the summer holidays in Europe and America. The first of our Championships was the Club Handicap tournament where players are assigned a handicap level and then play a best of five to 15 points, with each player starting at a different score. The strongest player on paper starts with a negative score and the weaker player starts with the same score but on the positive side. This makes for very high-intensity and close matches. This year again some of the best players fell early in the process, which put a lot of smiles on some of the players who normally have a hard time beating them! In the end, the final was disputed between last year’s finalist Daniel Gelinas and newcomer to the Club, John Yates. John was in good form and was able to inflict another loss in the final to Daniel. John came out the winner 3 games to 0 (3-0). The second competition was our coveted Club Championship where all players of the Club, members of the squash section or not, are invited to participate. It was another fun affair with high quality matches in the quarters, semis and final. In the end, logic was respected with the number 1 seed, Ben Nicholson, beating the number 2 seed, Daniel Gelinas, 3-1. The tournament also offered three other categories and allowed the players to play more highly competitive matches. In the Classic Plate, Robson Yeoh was able to overcome John Bird in a 3-1 battle. In the Plate, Colin Bullock beat Jonathan Hadley 3-1, while in the spoon category Alan Naughton was able to beat Eugene Szeleky 3-0.

SPORTS & SOCIAL EVENTS REPORTS
Our final event was a spur-of-the-moment, mini one-day tournament to celebrate the long holiday weekend. We named the tournament the LKY Memorial Handicap One-Day Tournament. Again this was a handicap affair played in a pool format with each player in a pool playing the other one in a single 15-point match. The winner of each pool (two pools total) then met in the final. The inaugural LKY Memorial Tournament was won by our only Tasmanian, Kim Hine, who took the measure of one of our three Canadians, Daniel Cossette, 15-9. This was a fun day and every participant is already looking forward to next year. This almost ends our calendar for the year; the only event left is the Orange Bowl, our annual Club competition against Singapore Cricket Club. Last year this was a happy day for us with an easy win against our arch-rivals. However, the last time we were at their location, we felt the wrath of the Cricket Club gods and lost massively. We are training hard to avoid a repeat of this bad experience.

COACH’S CORNER:
IMPORTANT DATES
I would like to make you aware of something I call your “Speed Limit”. This relates to every single tennis player regardless of standard. Each one of us has our own natural speed limit which is in relation to the speed at which we swing our racquets, how well we move on court and how quickly we “pick up” the ball.
• September 4th 2015 Beginning of Friday Night Savitar Junior Team Tennis (4 Courts) 8 week season 7pm to 9pm
It is noticed very often that we play much better tennis during the warm up or just hitting than when we play a match. Chances are that as soon as the game starts, we slow down our speed limit to an unnatural speed. This happens when we try to be too careful in order to avoid mistakes, and we end up making more mistakes. I’d like to compare this to driving … if you can imagine driving 40 kph in the extreme right lane of the freeway, chances are you will feel very uncomfortable and maybe even have an accident, or at least cause one.
• October 9th 2015 Last day of Junior Tennis programmes (Season 1)
Another version of playing at an unnatural speed limit of course would be if you played too hard, overhitting most of your shots and making a lot of unforced errors. This would be like driving 160 kph along Bukit Timah Road … not much chance of surviving. So what you need to do is go out and recognise your own comfortable speed limit, one at which you can hit effective shots without making too many silly mistakes. You will find that your speed limit will gradually increase through quality practice, thus making your game more powerful and effective. Good luck and let’s have another great season of tennis!
• September 12th 2015 Beginning of KLM Junior Team Tennis League
• October 13th-15th 2015 Savitar Tennis Camp, 9am to 12pm • October 19th 2015 First day of Junior Tennis programmes (Season 2) To book or for any information regarding tennis lessons, junior programmes, or tennis camps please contact Tennis Director, Scott Johnston, on 90389348 or email scott@savitar.sg

KARATE History Zen Do Ka Freestyle Karate classes began at the Hollandse Club in August 2012 and have been at Hollandse School since January 2014. Members’ children between the ages of four and twelve have been getting a kick out of karate: several have won medals and trophies in tournaments and some have been promoted all the way to their Green Belts, with only Brown Belt to go before becoming Black Belt Karate Kidz.
Free Trial Classes We invite you to join in the fun and learn self defense through games, fun competitions, exciting tricky spinning kicks and punches, hitting pads, NOT each other. Come and try it out at our obligation free trial classes. Parents are invited to join the fun. What do kids wear/need? Karate Kidz can wear street clothes for trial classes but must wear a ZDK Karate uniform after they sign up. After demonstrating their commitment and becoming Yellow Belts, participants are required to purchase instructional DVDs for each subsequent belt, which helps them advance through independent learning and homework.
Classes Kidz classes are fun; a typical class starts with warm-up games such as tag, races and soccer before getting to the serious business of Karate.
Gradings: Intermediate and Colour Belt Gradings are held at ZDK headquarters in Aljunied. Grading fees are applicable.
Karate Kidz learn takedowns and breakfalls, so they can fall without being hurt. They also learn to escape grabs and holds, defend against punches and kicks and, perhaps most importantly, that Karate is meant to be used for self-defense, and not to hurt people. Karate Kidz are taught to respond in a proportional way if attacked.
Instructor: The class is conducted by Australian Sensei Peter A. Robertson. He is a Black Belt in Australian Freestyle Karate, 2nd Dan in USSD and 3nd Dan in Karate & Kickboxing.
Zen Do Ka Karate Kidz learn traditional Kata choreographed battles with imaginary foes to promote concentration and the Zendoka’s ongoing quest for perfection. The first Kata (see pics below) is the “Yellow Belt Kata”. It is seven simple moves that teach basic stances, punches and blocks. Where? Hollandse Club’s Rotterdam Room. When? 4.30pm to 5.30pm every Sunday.
How do I sign my chidren up? Contact Sensei Peter A. Robertson on 98378637 or email zendoka@yahoo.com Gradings at ZDK Headquarters in Aljunied. Hollandse Club and Hollandse School Karate Kidz attended gradings on June 13th at ZDK Headquarters alongside Swiss Club, Canadian Schools and other Elite Karate Kidz. Congratulations go to Dutch kids Leon Dal Ben for earning his second stripe, Benjamin Arts and Quentin Kroes who earned their Yellow Belts, Leonardo Remmerswaal who earned his fourth stripe on Yellow, Hana De Geir, and brothers Eijso and Meine de Boer who were all promoted to Orange Belt.
