PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

“I am happy to announce the reinstatement of a loyalty program for longstanding members of the Hollandse Club.”

Dear Fellow Members, Welcome back! After the relatively quiet months of July and August, the Club is currently seeing renewed buzz and activities. Also the coming months are filled with many exciting activities. During the summer period, the Club carried out an extensive maintenance program off our facilities, and we made many improvements to our terrace and our tennis courts. The Finance team has also worked hard on the implementation of our new Club Management System. And as you may have experienced by now, we re-introduced the very popular Vietnamese food option by Bun! During the summer we also held two Summer Camps, organized by the Hollandse Club in collaboration with our service providers. Around 30 kids per camp enjoyed the numerous activities that were organized at the Club and overall it was a huge success.

The months of September and October are again filled with Comedy and Movie nights, and we will be celebrating the German Oktoberfest and Kids’ Halloween towards the end of October. More details on all the activities and events can be found in this magazine. Finally, I am happy to announce the reinstatement of a loyalty program for longstanding members of the Hollandse Club. We are in the process of sending out letters to members who have been with the Club for 20 years or more, announcing our Silver (20-24 years) and Gold (25 years or more) membership rewards program. We wish to recognise and thank our loyal members who fall within these two categories by giving a substantial discount on all F&B charges within the Club. They will also be presented with special membership cards which they will receive at our Loyalty Cocktail on 28th September 2012. I look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events. On behalf of the Main Committee,

This is the time of the year that we welcome many new members to the Club. We’re working together with several of our partner associations and international schools to promote the Club to newcomers in Singapore. Our next Open House will be held on 22nd September and we look forward to welcoming many new members to our Club.

Robert Gorter President Hollandse Club

We will be organizing our annual Welcome Back poolside BBQ on 7th September. This time the party will have a Caribbean theme, and it will be a great opportunity to meet your old friends again after the holiday break, as well as meeting new friends in a relaxed atmosphere at our poolside.

GM’S MESSAGE “Welcome back from the holidays. I hope you all had a relaxing time.”

Dear Members, Welcome back from the holidays. I hope you all had a relaxing time. One of my “favourite” topics is back on the agenda … THE TOWELS! After the introduction of the new grey towels and the ‘signing-in’ procedure at the reception last year, no more losses were recorded. We still made a small stock of the white towels available at the tennis pavilion and in the tennis changing rooms for your convenience. However, last month a loss of 120 of these white towels was recorded! Therefore, with immediate effect, a small stock of white towels will only be available at the tennis pavilion bar (with Kiki). They will only be given out to members who sign in. If the towel is not returned, $15 will be charged to your account. When Kiki closes her bar, you can return the towels at the main reception. The signing-in sheet will be transferred to the reception when the tennis bar is closed. At the gym, only the small size white towels will be available and you also need to sign for them. Just to clarify: the grey towels that all members can pick up from the reception after signing for them, can be used ANYWHERE in the Club. This includes the gym, tennis and squash courts, as long as they are used as towels and not for any other purpose. BUN IS BACK We finally managed to secure a work permit for Thui, our Bun Vietnamese chef and she is now back preparing all your favorite Vietnamese dishes again. Her Vietnamese dishes are available in the evening on weekdays and all day on weekends.

4 The Hollandse Club WWw.hollandseclub.org.sg

ICE CREAM SELF SERVICE It has come to our attention that many kids help themselves to the ice creams on the Terrace, without placing them on their tab. Unfortunately, we have had to lock the 2 ice cream cabinets on the Terrace. We ask for your (and your children’s) patience when it comes to obtaining their favorite frozen flavors. CLUB MANAGEMENT SYSTEM With the introduction of the new Club management system next month, overall security will be much tighter and you will be required to have your membership cards with you at all times in order to order food and drinks. TENNIS COURTS The resurfacing of tennis courts 4 and 5 has now been completed. The surrounding areas have also been cleaned up a bit and some of the wild trees have been cut back. PLAYGROUND Last but not least, we will start the construction of our new playground this month. First, we will have to remove the old one. Unfortunately, the whole process will take around 5-6 weeks, during which time the kids won’t have a playground. We regret this inconvenience, but I am sure that the result will be worth waiting for. Yours Sincerely, René Verhulst General Manager

Events & Activities

Summer Camps 2012 This summer saw one of the Club’s most successful summer camp seasons ever. There were 28 kids aged 4 to 12 in the first week at the end of June and 30 kids in the second camp in the first week of August. Some children took part the whole week, while others were there for the morning activities or for only a couple of days.

Tennis Anyone? It was an action packed week, with each different Club sport and activity offering a chance to try a new sport or improve their skills. After the kids baked their own pizzas, it was time to hit the tennis courts. Some kids needed coaching as they had never tried tennis or didn’t want to play on the sunny court. In the end, everyone gave it their best and even the youngest kids loved all the games, tips and pointers that Scott and Paul and their assistants from Savitar Tennis School offered.

Cities of the Future The older children really helped to make the younger ones feel at home and language barriers were soon broken down with older siblings translating for younger ones. All the kids really got into the arts and crafts provided by eZoo, our resident art and music school. Their assignment was to build their own city and make it look as realistic, wacky or futuristic as possible. Many kids spent hours working on their 3D creations or on the large canvas paintings. The girls took their time with details and making their cities and canvas paintings pretty, while the boys showed their high-tech sides with sci-fi creations. All the kids put a lot of thought into the assignment and were able to explain their thinking and designs really well. 10 The Hollandse Club WWw.hollandseclub.org.sg

Events & Activities

Swimming with Nancy That was all just the first day! The second day saw all the kids in the pool with Nancy and the Aquaducks team. After warming-up with music and dance there were plenty of games that had the teams all striving to beat each other. Yet again a huge thanks to the Aquaducks team, who always manage to get everyone involved.

Judo and Taekwondo with the Masters There was also Judo with Gerard and his team, which had a lot of newcomers to the sport a little nervous. Even the youngest kids soon realized that Gerard and the instructors know what they are doing and can make Judo accessible for just about anyone. Some of the more chatty kids also soon learned that you do not mess with the master when you are in his Dojo. Gerard is definitely in charge. The kids also got to try out Taekwondo with Raymond, our resident master, and kids who hadn’t tried it before really got into the lesson too. Thanks to the camp, some kids who would never consider martial arts might just end up practicing them regularly. Thanks to Raymond and Gerard and his team.

Squash with Mr Yeo

What a difference from tennis. “The ball goes so fast”, “the wall always hits back”... Just two of the one-liners heard during the squash fun games on the Hollandse Club squash courts. Mr Yeo and his colleague were great at introducing even the youngest kids to the fun side of squash.

Urban Street Team Football

The all purpose court was a great location for the football workshop on the last day of the second camp. There were training camp style exercises and fun and games designed to improve ball skills. It all ended with an amazing football tricks show. The previous days saw boys and girls playing sports together. Now, the boys had their chance to shine and left the girls a little behind. Next year, we need some more female football stars to show the boys that the girls can play too. Besides all the action packed activities the kids also enjoyed some down time at the bowling alley and by lounging together on lots of pillows while watching a movie in the lounge. What a great way to end an active day at the camp.

Mum and Dad at the Camp

Parents had some enjoyable times during camp week too. There was a family barbeque at the end of the day on Friday. All the camp families enjoyed the food while the kids caught them up on what they had done all day. Before the start of the barbeque, mum and dad were invited to the percussion concert. All the kids had to make music were bamboo poles and sticks. With a little practice with eZoo’s music teachers, everyone was tapping away to the rhythm. Thanks to all the instructors, camp leaders, kids and their parents for making the HC summer camp a great success. Hope to see you all next summer. WWw.hollandseclub.org.sg The Hollandse Club 11

Events & Activities tristan tan / Shutterstock.com

Gardens by the Bay There’s a new place to cool off from the Singapore heat, all in the shadow of Marina Bay Sands. It has only been open for a couple of months, but crowds have flocked to ‘Gardens by the Bay’, where they recently welcomed their millionth visitor. Trip Advisor says it is as if “Star Wars landed at the Botanical Gardens.” Here are some of the highlights.

Work in Progress

The 101 hectares (250 acres) site is on land reclaimed from the sea (in part thanks to Dutch experts in this field) and it is still a ‘work in progress’. The sheer number and diversity of plants from all over the planet will be astounding once everything is fully grown. Entry to the garden is free, but admission fees apply to the two conservatories, the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest, and at the OCBC 128mlong aerial walkway. Why not invest in a one year subscription for $180 for a family of up to 5 or $68 for individuals. It may seem like a lot, but two trips to the paid parts of the gardens will mean you break even. It’s a good excuse to just go by for a quick picnic or check out how the planting is progressing.

Picnics in the Supertree Forest

As well as extensive outside areas and the OCBC walkway, Gardens by the Bay has two cool houses with all your favourite Western blooms, from azaleas and begonias to roses and violets. Unfortunately, you can’t picnic inside the cool area, but why not pick up and fill a picnic basket with gourmet goodies at Café Crema. Other gourmet delights include up market restaurant ‘Pollen’, with stunning waterfront views. Supertree dining is more assessable, with other affordable options already open and more to come.

Inspiration Galore

If you haven’t had the opportunity to visit yet, why not come along with the Hollandse Club excursion to the latest addition to “Let’s make Singapore our Garden.” Photographing plants and flowers, butterflies and birds is the theme for this trip, with HC photographer Evan Quek and professional photographer Joshua Gier on hand to advise and answer all your questions.

Pauline and Bart Welten Here we are: Bart and Pauline Welten. We both grew up in Limburg, but after we finished high school we moved, Bart to Leiden and Pauline to The Hague for our studies. We married 27 years ago and we have two beautiful daughters, Sabine (aged 24) and Isabel (aged 22). Sabine just graduated in Biomedical Sciences and is now doing her thesis at the University of Leiden. Isabel is still studying at the Technical University of Delft. Last but not least, we have a very enthusiastic dog, a boxer, named Wasko, which we had to leave behind in Holland, to our regret. Fortunately, we succeeded in finding a new home for him and he seems very happy. We just moved to Singapore 4 weeks ago. Bart was appointed as CFO of a Joint Venture between Sinochem China and DSM. This JV is active in pharmaceuticals and has operations worldwide. The headquarters of the JV are in Singapore. Pauline will be starting her new job next week, working for SACAC, located at the American Club, and will be working part-time on Wednesdays and Fridays. In the past, we lived in Boston, USA, Amsterdam, The Hague, Milan and Voorburg, Holland but moved back to Limburg 10 years ago. While living in Milan, there was an informal Dutch hockey club, that played field hockey every sunday in Varese. This was a fun opportunity to meet other expats, next to our Italian friends. As our children are no longer joining us, we probably have to invest a little more time in meeting other people. The Hollandse Club appeared to us informal and not too crowded. Pauline likes to play tennis and already joined the Ladies Social on Monday mornings. She used to play hockey and was a hockey coach for the youngest children who were 4 years old. Bart enjoys running, but the heat of Singapore takes some time to get used to. He also likes to play squash and a little tennis. We are looking forward to making new friends.

Colin Ong and Suzan Choi Colin is Singaporean and Suzan is South Korean. We met in the Philippines in 2005, when we both took time out from our work to do some mission work. Suzan was suppose to start 1 month after I was scheduled to leave, but she came a few months earlier to familiarise herself with the language and culture, and the rest is history! We got married 2 years later and went to Melbourne, Australia to pursue post graduation studies. After 2 years, we returned to Singapore where our first child, Isaac Francis was born. Isabel Clare, our second, is now 6 months old. We joined HC because of the location and facilities. We wanted to let our kids start swimming, while we ourselves wanted to learn tennis and start doing gym. It is very child friendly and has a nice and relaxing atmosphere. We also enjoy Japanese food very much, so we like that we can eat at the Japanese association down the road.

Chef Sukimin brings Indonesia to the HC The Lounge was transformed with traditional Indonesian decorations such as delicate Wayang Kulit dolls and colourful Balinese Payung umbrellas. A gong informed the diners that the elaborate buffet was opened, but the delicious aromas had already teased taste buds enough to know it was going to be good. Our very own Javanese born Chef Sukimin from Surabaya welcomed the guests in his traditional Javanese Baju Lurek and Blangkon headdress. The service staff also looked the part in their batik uniforms. The food did not disappoint, with traditional snacks and dishes, as the chilled Prosecco flowed. There were two wonderful performances of Indonesian dancing, with Chef Sukimin’s wife dancing with her traditional dance group Duta Santarina. The dances were all from Bali, with the dancers dressed in traditional Balinese dress for the first dance, the Puja Prasamya. The second set was traditional Balinese Cendrawasih dances, inspired by the colourful bird of that name. The dancers had changed into colourful outfits with elaborate make-up and jewelry. The Club is very grateful to the Duta Santarina dancers for the beautiful entertainment and to Chef Sukimin and his team for the warm atmosphere and fabulous food.

GYM

Powerplate® By Head Fitness Trainer: Youri Kruse

We are proud to announce a new addition to the gym – Powerplate®. From space technology to gym equipment. Acceleration training or vibration training has been gaining popularity in the last 10 years. The technology behind acceleration training dates back from the sixties. The technology was invented because of the space-race. One of the reasons astronauts needed to return to earth was muscle atrophy and bone loss, which occurred because of zero gravity in space. The Russians developed a technology that created gravity in a 3-dimensional way; this enabled their astronauts to stay in space for an average of 400 days before returning home versus their Americans counterparts’ average of 120 days. The technology was transferred to the west after the iron curtain broke down. It’s All about G forces The 3-dimensional spectrum (up/down, left/right, forward/backwards) that the Powerplate® creates can generate from 2 to 6 G forces. By vibrating 25 to 50 times per second during a Powerplate® training session, your muscles will react automatically, which can activate 95% of your muscle-fibers. This is in comparison to a normal training session, which only activates around 20% of your musclesfibers. Use and Benefits Because of the structure of the Powerplate®, almost every exercise will be a whole body vibration workout. This way of training will dramatically reduce the time needed to achieve results. A normal Powerplate® workout will take about 30 minutes and will handle the following components: • Stretch • Balance • Core • Strength • Massage In recent years there has been a lot of study and experimentation with the use of the Powerplate®. Some of its users include Ajax, Serena Williams, Lee Westwood, Lance Armstrong, Shaquille O’Neal, Rafael Nadal, Sarah Hammer, David James, the German National Soccer Team, Chicago Bulls, Glasgow Rangers and many others. These are some of the benefits that have been reported: • Strength • Proprioception • Balance • Flexibility • Circulation • Neurological processes in general There are over 200 published studies that document the benefits of acceration training. Here are some of the benefits: • Improvement in blood circulation • Increased muscle strength and flexibility • Improved range of motion • Reduced pain and soreness and faster recovery after workouts

Youri, our Head Fitness Trainer, is also a certified Powerplate® Trainer. If you would like to book a Powerplate® training session (promotional rate of $30 for 30 minutes), please contact Youri: sports.exec@hollandseclub.org.sg or call 6461 1127.

FOR GYM USERS TO ALL “EARLY BIRDS”

From 6:00am to 7:00am the last gate going down to the Tennis Court will be open instead of The Rooms side gate.

GYM ETIQUETTE & HYGIENE

Please observe proper gym etiquette by placing equipments back into their original position after use and help to take care of the equipment by not dropping the weights or banging the machines. Thank you! 34 The Hollandse Club WWw.hollandseclub.org.sg

Sports & Recreation A new feature in the Gym: The Power Rack

The gym has got a new feature. It looks like an iron cage that holds a barbell, but in reality it is a tool that allows you to perform 30+ exercises with safety and more ease. It is known as a Power Rack. This piece of equipment is used by any serious athlete and should also be incorporated in any one’s training regime, who is experiencing a decent level of health. The exercises that are performed via the Power Rack are great tools for anti-aging and keeping hormone levels at optimal levels. 3D-movement The exercises that are executed in the Power Rack involve use of free weights. The effect of free weight movement on the muscles is completely different than in a fixed setting (machine). The body has to work a lot harder to keep the range of motion of the weights correct during an exercise. This means that performing an exercise with free weight puts a lot more beneficial stress on the muscles. The inter-muscular coordination (different muscle groups working together) is stimulated because the muscles have to work together to keep the weight in the desired projection/course. Training The Big 3 The Big 3 are commonly known as the Squat, Dead Lift and Bench-Press. These 3 movements are regarded as the cornerstone for any training regime. The Squat and Dead-lift are exercises that build strong legs and core, tone muscles and are excellent exercises for reducing fat. The Bench-Press is an overall strength and muscle builder. The Big 3 are difficult to perform without assistance. The Power Rack provides a safety barrier for these and more exercises. Other uses for the Power Rack The Power Rack is optimal for bodyweight exercises. Pull ups, chinning, leg raises and dipping are basic bodyweight exercises that can be performed with the use of a power rack. All the free weight exercises can be performed inside a power rack. An addition to the before mentioned bench-press would be the incline bench-press. Further, the sport of weightlifting can also be safely performed within the power rack. Ready to use the PowerRack? Schedule a Personal Training session with one of our Personal Trainers! Call 6461 1127 or email sports.exec@hollandseclub.org.sg to schedule an appointment.

Group Exercise Courses Want to learn how to properly use the machines and free weights in the gym? The Sports and Recreation department would like to introduce group fitness classes to help our members become more familiar with the correct form of the major exercises. We will offer the following courses, in a group format: • Proper usage of resistance machines • Proper way to perform free weight exercises The courses will outline the correct way to perform exercises, most common mistakes and some tips to maintain correct posture. To provide every participant enough time to properly execute and analyze your performance, the groups will have a maximum of 6 pax. If you are interested in joining a group fitness session, please contact the Sports and Recreation department at 6461 1127 or email sports.exec@hollandseclub.com.sg WWw.hollandseclub.org.sg The Hollandse Club 35

ITN PLAYER TEST: 7.00PM, WEDNESDAY, 26th SEPTEMBER 2012 WHAT IS YOUR NUMBER? The ITN is an international tennis number that represents a player’s general level of play. In time it is hoped that every tennis player worldwide will have an ITN. Under this system players will be rated from ITN 1 – ITN 10. ITN 1 represents a high-level player standard and ITN 10 is a player that is starting to play competitively (can serve and return) on a full court using a normal ball. SO HOW DO I GET AN ITN RATING? We will be offering an assessment on Wednesday, 26 September from 7pm onwards. Players register for a 30-minute session. The cost will be $20.00 per player. Be quick to reserve a spot! WHY SHOULD I GET AN ITN RATING? This assessment and rating allows you to pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses, enabling you to track and chart your own development and improvement. WHAT’S INVOLVED IN THE TEST? Players will be challenged to use a number of grondstrokes, volleys & serves, measuring control, accuracy and power. For more information or to register please contact Scott Johnston tel: 9038 9348 or email scott.johnston@savitargroup.com Registrations for the ITN grading close Friday, 21 September.

SQUASH Dear Squash enthusiasts, Now that the school holiday season is over, squash activities are returning and its full steam ahead. Your new Squash Committee members are very excited to have all of you participate in what appears will be another great year of squash events on the calendar. Here are some of the key highlights of the new season to come in the next few months: • Singapore COSMO league started on August 27th and will go on for 12 weeks. In this league, the HC battles 6 other clubs on Mondays and all our members are invited to come and cheer on our team. • On September 1st, we are hosting the Second annual Orange Bowl which is a 1-day competition against our friends at the Singapore Cricket Club. This event sees the winning team carry home the highly coveted Orange Bowl trophy! • We will also be hosting our Veteran Squash tournament in the months to come. We have yet to finalize the dates for this tournament, as we want to ensure that all of the Singapore Veteran crowd can participate and make this event the best Veteran tournament in the country. • This year, we are bringing back the HC Squash Championship. This tournament has been absent from our schedule for a while. The Squash Committee is very much looking forward to seeing all of our Squash players battle it out for the right to call themselves the HC Squash Champion! This will be either a handicapped or multi-tier tournament in order to give everyone a fighting chance. • Other squash activities filling the weekly schedule, starting in September, include HC Squash boxes, our Junior Squash training program and Monday and Tuesday Squash members training sessions. • The Squash team will be travelling to Jakarta in November for its annual Squash Tour event. • Last, and certainly not least, we will be offering a Squash introduction session to all HC members who would like to know more about the sport and potentially join our activities. These sessions will be held every Saturday morning in October from 11:00am to 12:00pm. If you are interested in participating in these sessions, please contact the Reception at 6464 5225 or email reception@hollandseclub.org.sg As you can see, the HC Squash section has a very busy schedule. We definitely hope that all Squash enthusiasts will take full advantage of these amazing events. Thank you all for your participation and keep on playing squash! HC Squash Committee
