Connecting Knowing Loving Growing
Experience
Easter Sunday was March 31st. Throughout the month of April we will look at different people’s reactions to the Easter story in the Bible. Some are quite famous. Thomas takes on the qualifying name “Doubting” to describe his reaction to the story that Jesus was risen. He just couldn’t believe it. Peter, of course, went back to fishing, presumably because he was ashamed of the fact that he had denied his best friend three times on the night Jesus was arrested. The women who came to the tomb on Easter Sunday were startled and upset to find that Jesus’ body was gone from the grave. They were then overwhelmed with comfort and joy when they discovered that indeed Jesus was risen. And the two men who met Jesus on the road to Emmaus ran back to Jerusalem to tell the disciples that they had seen the Lord. What do we do with this news that Jesus is alive? Do we doubt that it is true? Do we believe, but run away from Jesus due to the shame of our past mistakes? Do we find this news troubling and upsetting, or comforting and joyful? Does it make us want to run out and tell someone else? Throughout the month of April let’s consider together the best ways that we can respond to the Good News of Jesus Christ. For He is alive indeed. Alleluia!

In addition to foster care and adoption, its services include family preservation, gang prevention, family drug prevention, early childhood care, multipurpose homes and higher education scholarships. Methodist Home for Children’s mission is to build upon the social, physical, and emotional strengths of children, youth and families and to affirm their worth.
By doing this, they have been able to transform lives of individuals and families. The financial cost of providing these services is huge…but the payoff is immeasurable. Thank you for your support.

LOVING (Love God through worship, and love our

neighbor through service.) DURHAM INTERFAITH HOSPITALITY NETWORK Aldersgate is one of 30+ churches that make up the Durham Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN). Families in the program come to Aldersgate for a week for a hot, nutritious meal and a safe place to play, relax and sleep. Many hands are needed to help make these families feel welcomed and loved.
Evening hosts prepare meals and share in fellowship with the families. Overnight hosts sleep over and are present to respond to the needs of our guests.
My heartfelt thanks to all those people who are already involved in making Our youth transform class- our guests feel the spirit of rooms into bedrooms for Christ’s love. Come and be the families. a part of this wonderful Drivers bring the families team. to the church each evening and return them to the Day House each morning.
Aldersgate UMC will host the IHN families the week of April 7th, and again the week of June 30th. You can learn more about IHN at the website for the Durham Interfaith Hospitality Network www.dihn.org. or contact Susan Gay at susgy@aol.com. Susan Gay
MOVING ON UP - PROMOTION SUNDAY Aldersgate has traditionally held promotion Sunday the end of August for the next year. However, the rising sixth graders now move up to the youth group at the beginning of June. We also have a number of yearround children in our program. Finally, all the children feel like they have been “promoted” to the next grade when they end their school year. Therefore, the Children’s Christian Formation Team will move the children to the next grade beginning with the summer Sunday school season on June 2nd. We will follow the Durham school policy, which observes the cut-off date of August 31 for grade decisions. Please contact Jane Brannock if you have any questions - Jane@aldersgate.org
KIDS OWN WORSHIP NEEDS YOU! This is an important ministry to our children, but we cannot do it without enough folks willing to go to another service a couple of times a year and then be with these wonderful children during the 11:00 am service. Two adults are needed for each session. One person leads the time together and the other adult is there to assist. Contact Jane Brannock jane@aldersgate.orgor Holly Fishback hfishback@nc.rr.com if you are interested in being a part of our children’s ministry.

CHANCEL CHOIR CANTATA Upon This Rock: The Passion, The Question, The Call; a Cantata by Pepper Choplin Presented Sunday, April 14 at 8:15 and 11:00 am From the composer’s forward: “Peter begins with the compelling question, ‘What is your passion?” As we read the Gospels, it is evident that Peter was a passionate person. This cantata leads us through Peter’s experience with Christ: his call, his confession, his denial, his restoration, and his sending out. As we experience the story through Peter’s eyes, we are led to ask, “What is our passion? What is our call? Who do we live for? …. May this cantata inspire you to experience the story with Peter and ultimately embrace the message of Upon This Rock: And so our love, our love for Christ / Will be the cause, the reason why we live our days / To walk in faith,/Faith in the rock, the solid rock.” Please invite your friends and family to join us for this special presentation by our Chancel Choir. Please let Jane Brannock know IN ADVANCE if you need Child care. Jane: Jane@aldersgate.org.

A MOMENT OF GRATITUDE BY GLENN REYNOLDS
Explosion of Gratitude
I am grateful for the faithful members of Aldersgate. Those who: teach and attend Sunday School faithfully; serve in the kitchen & set up events in the gym; run the audio/visual; serve to make our services run smoothly; make communion bread & prepare the elements; run the office; count the offering; take attendance; greet; usher; serve as acolytes, musicians & lay readers; & serve as Pastors. Many who do things I don’t even know about. Each of us has a role to play as part of an active & growing congregation. I'm grateful for all of those who do their part to make our congregation a community of believers.
Prime Timers is a church organization for retired, semi-retired or seasoned folks who enjoy fellowship, good food and stimulating topics and activities. The purpose is to provide opportunities to share and support one another in a Christian environment on a scheduled basis. There may be speakers (outside or staff) trips of interest or times to eat out at favorite restaurants. Everyone is welcomed - church members or community friends, to be a part of this group. Many of the original older adults have “gone home" and a few are unable to attend. Guess What ? Some of you younger faithfully Christians have moved into the older adult world…(we will not mention any names) But, believe us, it is a true blessing to move into the older adult classification, and we would like to suggest and challenge you to join this ministry. The opportunities for the blessings of Christian fellowship and growing and loving our church and reaching out to others is unlimited. Your talents and ideas would be a great blessing. Give Prime Timers a try! Prime Timers meet the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month at 11:45 am in the Wesley Room. Meals are bring your own or bring a covered dish to share. If you have any questions please contact: Susan Gay (919) 471-2352

A TECHNICOLOR PROMISE MUSIC AND ARTS CAMP has... DRAMA! There’s a part just for you! DANCE! We sing show-choir style, with lots of movement; and some may also learn special dance parts to some songs! ART! Help create backdrops and set pieces! And, of course, MUSIC! The songs are great, with plenty of solo opportunities too! Rise and Shine! - “A Technicolor Promise” Everyone loves a rainbow! Not only is it a wonder of creation, radiating beauty after a rain, but more importantly as a sign of the covenant, it reminds us of God’s overwhelming love and grace. “A Technicolor Promise,” by Allen Pote and Carole McCann, is a sometimes humorous but still truthful re-telling of the story of Noah and the Ark. WHEN: Monday, July 8 through Friday, July 12th - TIME: 9:00 am - 1:00 pm - COST: $55* FOR ages 6-13 - REGISTRATION for half-day camp is due by June 28th . Registration Brochures are at the Welcome Station or see Nan. (*For children attending AUMC’s Full-day Summer Camp Program, there is no additional fee or need to register separately for Music and Arts Camp week!) What’s the plan? - We plan to audition for some of the larger speaking parts (Noah, Mrs. Noah, and four storytellers) in June so that the week will be fun as well as amazing for all! Mostly, though, we’ll be learning “A Technicolor Promise” together from start to finish in one week! Through an exciting week of rehearsals, games, and activities, we will learn the story (including many other speaking parts and some solos), the songs and choreography, the play itself, and also create the set! It is fun, but pretty intensive - younger children should only come if they’re up for that! Sometimes we work in small groups, sometimes all together, and just the soloists, dancers, or main characters will have special practice times too. On Friday at 3:30 pm, we invite everyone in to see our show! M&A Camp Directors: Heidi Miller and Nan de Andrade Please share a brochure with neighborhood children/friends – we love children! Volunteers are needed! Contact Nan - Nan@aldersgate.org
