W E D N E S D AY NIGHT LIVE ! Wednesday Night Live Returns Jan. 7th - Sanctuary Prayer Time begins at 5:00 in the Sanctuary. The Wednesday Night Fellowship Meal is held in the Family Life Center from 5:30 until 6:15 pm. Immediately following the meal is Table Talk. This will be in the Family Life Center from 6:30-7:30 pm. If you had dinner, you can stay at your table! If not, please come and join us from 6:30 - 7:30 pm

TABLE TALK A few months ago I started talking with Jane Brannock about a thought that had been on my mind for a while. It started when I saw a conflict within many families. I was hoping to get young parents and children to get involved in classes at church; but it wasn’t happening as often as I had hoped. One of the things I kept hearing over and over again was that it took away from family time. Whoa! Wait a minute! Church should enhance families, not make it tougher. Ironically, as much as churches talk about promoting families, it seems rather odd that as soon as a family enters the Family Life Center that we immediately separate them from each other. Little Johnny goes to his class, and Susie to hers, Mom goes to a class she likes and Dad to a class for him. Meanwhile, even the grandparents are in different classes. That’s not all bad, of course. We learn at different rates and have different experiences depending on our ages. We have different interests and needs depending on where we are in life. So, we’ll continue that model, I’m sure. But, what if?...

Experience What if families came together and talked about the same Biblical/Spiritual subjects at the same time, even with each other? Or, if you’re not in church with your extended family (like most of us, actually), wouldn’t it be cool to learn from those younger or older about their perspectives on Biblical topics? Could we do something where the generations co-mingled together and learned from one another? I know I gain so much from the wisdom and experience of those who are older than me, and I’m now finding that I’m gaining incredible insight from younger people who see things in a way that I just never have considered before.

know. But whether you are hearing it for the first time or the one hundredth time, all people at the table should be able to take part in the discussion. We can all learn from each other. So, we will have 9 year olds and 90 - year olds listening and sharing together. I invite you to come and be a part of this unique gathering of food, faith, and fellowship starting on Wednesday, January 7th. The dinner will begin at 5:30 pm. We will shift gears to the Bible Study beginning at 6:30 pm. See you there!

Enter Table Talk… In January and February on Wednesday nights we will gather for a meal like we always do at 5:30 pm. But after the meal we won’t go anywhere. Instead, I’ll Have a Blessed New Year, lead a short Bible study; Pastor Doug and then we’ll talk about it with the people with whom we just ate dinner. The stories are Bible stories that all Christians should

W h a t if ? . . . . . . . Ta b l e Ta l k What if…sharing Bible stories were as easy as sharing a meal? What if…you could really talk with your friends about the Bible? What if…the church had a program you could take home and use around the dinner table? Beginning January 7th, Aldersgate will start an exciting new program. Table Talk is a weekly experience for the whole church family, adults, youth, and children.

Over a six-week period, we will gather for dinner, fellowship, study, and conversation about key stories of the Bible. The stories are basic enough for new Christians, yet have enough unexpected flair to engage the seasoned Bible reader. Sessions include a meal, the telling of the story, Table Talk questions and discussion, and activities for all ages. Here are the Bible stories in Table Talk, Volume 2:

of These, The Great Commission, The Last Supper, Crucifixion and the Resurrection. Elementary-aged children and youth will join tables with activities for them in the gym. Preschool children ages 3-5 will have a special class where they will learn the same stories in ways designed for them. For more information about this special program and how you can participate, please contact Jane Brannock. Jane@aldersgate.org or (919) 477-0509 x 101.

The Beatitudes, The Least

A Letter to All Men at Aldersgate I would like to thank Brandon Mitchell for accepting the vice presidency of UMM at Aldersgate. We need good leaders in this group; and I can already tell we are on the right track by convincing Brandon to step up to the challenge. As you know, we have a solid foundation of men who can be counted on in all situations. These guys have come through for the church time after time and year after year. What we need now is to continue to strengthen this tradition with new members. I believe we need to do this by maintaining our solid foundation of current members while reaching out to

the needs of Aldersgate men who are not active members of UMM. Specifically, we should reach out to men with young families. I would like to spend this year focusing our recruiting efforts on fathers in the congregation, reiterating the importance of men and the role men play in the family and in the church. UMM needs to be there for these men who are on the front lines of raising a family with all the challenges they are facing in our complicated and stressful world. I am confident we will attract many more active members when we offer relevant ideas and

programs that are consistent to the challenges these men face. This, combined with the Christian brotherhood we already have, I am certain will help us to grow our ranks. Peace, David Anderson President, UMM “I would like to spend this year focusing our recruiting efforts on fathers in the congregation, reiterating the importance of men and the roll men play in the family and in the church.” Dave Anderson UMM President

Community Connections Community Christmas Outreach Update This year, 2014, the Aldersgate Share Your Christmas program achieved 100% of its goal! Our congregation sponsored twenty two families, ninety individual family members and nine CONDUIT angels. Because of the generous monetary contributions this year, Aldersgate surpassed the Share Your Christmas food basket goal. This allowed the United Methodist

Men to purchase additional, much-needed food for every family we sponsored. Thank you to everyone that signed up to sponsor a child or adult with Christmas gifts and to those of you who donated funds for food baskets. Thanks to everyone that shopped, the UMM who organized and assembled the food baskets and the teams of folks that transported food from Food Lion

and delivered the presents to the families. The resounding success of “Share Your Christmas” reflects the collaborative efforts of our compassionate, caring church. Together with the Volunteer Center, a total of 1,060 families totaling 3,145 residents have been supported. Thank you for all you do for Durham. Anne Almond and Richard Low

Children’s Music & Arts Ministry Children are invited to develop and share their talents with God through dance, singing, and ringing! Make a New Year’s Resolution to join our ministry! NEW! Afternoon Arts Program – Beginning in February, our children will meet on Thursdays from 4:15-5:30 pm (after school) for singing, ringing, movement and drama! See the article below for details! Young Dancers (Sundays, 3:45-4:45 pm) are led by Anna Van Deventer. Rehearsals resume on Jan. 11th. The current group is finishing up a dance, to be performed on Jan. 25th. In February, a new invitation will be extended to all 2nd 5th graders for an upcoming March 22nd performance. NEW! Children’s Afternoon Arts Program – Please read and consider! This winter, we’re offering a new music and arts program, so that we can include more children in our arts ministry offerings! Here’s the concept – on Thursdays, children will ride the bus to Aldersgate if possible (Easley, Sandy Ridge), and we’ll try to arrange parent pick-ups at other elementary schools (Hillandale, Little River, Voyager). Children will be welcomed and given a snack time as they arrive. Children in the Aldersgate Afterschool program will also be invited to participate. From 4:15- 5:30 pm, we’ll begin a rotation of singing, ringing, drama, and other arts for younger and older elementary groups. The program will run for seven weeks, from Feb. 5th through March 19th. Then, on March 22nd, Children’s Sabbath Sunday, these children will take the lead at the 11:00 am worship service! (At this point, it seems like this will be the conclusion of our semester, since sports seem to dominate schedules in April-May.) Sounds exciting, right? It may be our best way to involve many children without calling for an extra evening out, or invading precious weekend family time.

Volunteers are Needed! We need LOTS of volunteers to make this the best it can be – so if you can help, or have suggestions/concerns, please contact Nan (nan@aldersgate.org) right away! Volunteers are needed: leading a group in singing, ringing, drama, drumming, visual arts, choreography, or to serve as a parent-driver for a school! We’re in our birthing time, so please watch for more details to come. Summary: Thursdays from Feb. 5th - March 19th, 4:15 – 5:30 pm. Performance Sunday, March 22nd at 11:00 am. Volunteers needed!

Worship Wonderings…. a series on worship practices by Nan de Andrade Ecumenical Spirit in Worship You’ll often hear United Methodists saying, “I grew up (Baptist, Catholic, Lutheran….) but when I needed a new church home, I found myself totally comfortable in United Methodist worship style.” This is due to several reasons: United Methodists tend to be “middle of the road” in the theological spectrum, and also have a deliberately open way of approaching differences (Wesley said, “If your heart is as my heart, take my hand.”). As supporters of the catholicuniversal Church, we recognize baptisms from any denomination. United Methodists also are a part of an Ecumenical Movement for Christian Unity which began in the mid1900’s, bringing worship from many Protestant and Catholic denominations closer together. By studying our common roots in early Church practices, many denominations have aligned the shape of their worship to the Word and Table pattern that we follow.

Also, in ecumenical consultation, liturgies such as “The Great Thanksgiving” and “Thanksgiving over the Water” were re-written to better reflect ancient prayers of the Church, while speaking in modern language. So now, when people from other denominations experience United Methodist worship, they often hear familiar words and sense a similar order to worship. This is one way that we are living into Jesus’ prayer “that we all may be one.” When we stand together in worship this week, remember and rejoice that we are standing firmly in the tradition of Christians all over the world, and throughout history!

SPOTIFY Your Praise! Spotify is a free application for computers or smart phones/pads/pods that plays music from playlists built by members. Each month, Nan creates a playlist of the music which will be sung that month at our 9:30 Contemporary worship service. If you search for Nan de Andrade and then choose the month’s playlist (for example, AUMC Dec. 2014), you can “tune your heart” all week, and be even more ready to praise God on Sunday mornings! Another cool feature is that you can select “Radio” from this playlist and it will shuffle in a variety of Contemporary Christian music from the same artists and play all day long! Hope you’ll give it a try – and if you encounter problems, give Nan a call! (919-477-0509 x 116)
