Connecting Knowing Loving Growing
Experience
On Saturday, May 18th, the Administrative Board, Council on Ministries, and Staff of the church met at the Trent Semans Center on the campus of Duke University for a day apart to discuss effective church governance. Gray Southern, the former Durham District Superintendent and current Senior Pastor at Apex UMC was brought in to facilitate discussion. Here’s a brief look at what happened on that day. Gray began our time together by looking at scripture and reminding us of 1 Corinthians 12 which reads that all of us are an important part of the body of Christ. We split into groups of five and were asked to go around our circle and share with each other what aspects of their leadership style and spiritual gifts we really appreciated. This was a great way to start the day, because it certainly put everyone in a good mood to hear compliments from their sisters and brothers in Christ, but, it also helped to build goodwill and trust right at the beginning of our time together. We then spent some time looking at reasons and goals for church governance. Gray ranked in order by priority the following things that churches try to accomplish through their governing structure. They try to meet the following needs, in order: Mission, Coherence, Function, Programmatic, Relational, Assimilation. Gray pointed out that setting and upholding the mission is the number one thing church governance should be trying to accomplish and that brings some

coherence of the many different groups under the mission was the second need for a governing structure. I also took away from our time together that churches often try to relate to one another and even assimilate people into the life of the church through governance, but those purposes weren’t really important functions of governance. Instead, those goals should be met in other ways, like small groups, choirs, youth groups, mission teams, Sunday School classes, etc. Relational goals and assimilation are important aspects of church life, but we shouldn’t ask someone to be on Trustees in an attempt to get them more involved at church. Rather, we should ask them to our small group. I would argue that Aldersgate uses its governance structure to accomplish all of those things, although we are stronger in some areas than others. However, our structure should exist to accomplish the goals associated closest to the top of the list. This is why our Administrative Board should exist, for instance – to set, drive, and carry out the mission of the church. We were then asked to turn once again to our small groups of five. This time we were asked what were the strengths and what were the concerns of our current governing model. Many things were listed in each column. Noteworthy were comments such as having strong lay leadership, a diversity of gifts and experiences in leadership, and having lots of possibilities for leadership and service here at Aldersgate. “And when they had appointed elders for them in every church, with prayer and fasting they committed them to the Lord in whom they had believed .” Acts 14:23 On the other hand, it was noted that there was some redundancy among some committee functions, and it was unclear at times as to which committee should have the authority to make which decisions. Gray closed his time with us talking about the different ways United Methodist Churches have chosen to govern themselves throughout the years. This was an enlightening history lesson as we learned that UMC’s have done things differently in the past and that not all UMC’s utilized the same structure today. However, there are some fundamental Boards and Committees that are required of all churches, and the Discipline requires certain positions to populate some of those Boards and Committees. Beyond that, we have some freedom to structure ourselves in ways we feel are best to carry out the Mission that God has given us. We said good-bye to Gray and took a break for lunch. Following lunch, we gathered to review what we had heard during the morning and think about next steps. We split up into groups, but as each reported back to each other we all said some version of the same thing. “We need to streamline governance and increase accountability.” Some ideas were floated around the group that will be brought back to the table at another combined meeting in mid-summer.
The biggest change on the table right now is the idea to combine our Administrative Board and Council on Ministries into one entity. We agreed that a simple combination of members and functions was not what we wanted. Instead, we wanted a group that would set, drive, and carry out the Mission of the Church, as stated above. What that looks like, we’re not completely sure at this point. That’s where we need your prayers. We expect a “One Board” system to increase trust, communication, and accountability among committees. We know we don’t want the Board to be simply a reporting station of activities; but we do want to continue to celebrate successes and learn from our struggles. You can help us in this process by sharing your hopes and dreams with the Administrative Board, Council on Ministries and Staff members, and also by praying that the Spirit will make the best governing structure for our church’s future. In Christ’s Name,
Doug Lain

KNOWING (Know more about God, each other, and the needs of our world. ) VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL - JUNE 24TH - 28TH EVERYWHERE FUN FAIR
Everywhere Fun Fair Vacation Bible School is June 24th-28th from 6:00-8:00pm, with dinner from 5:00-5:45 pm. Register now by going to www.aldersgate.org and click on the VBS connection. We also need lots of adult and youth volunteers. You can also sign up to volunteer at this same web site. We have a job for YOU!!! Please take a look and see how you can help out!
VBS NEEDS YOUR HELP! VBS promises to be an exciting event for the children in our church and community. In order to make it a great success we need your help. This year there will be a VBS Kitchen Team overseeing all the dinners and snacks. If you are part of group who sponsored a dinner last year we still are in great need of your support. We are asking groups (Circles, Sunday School classes, small study groups, etc) to financially support ONE dinner for the VBS children. Smaller groups can join in with another group and combine your support. (any amount will be appreciated) We are planning for 150 children to attend VBS each night so your help is crucial in providing a meal for them. If you or a small group are willing to help with the cost of one meal or you would like to serve on the VBS Kitchen Team, please contact Jane Brannock at jane@aldersgate.org or Barbara Atkinson at habnc@hotmail.com
We are also looking for donations of the following: cardboard tubes (from paper towels, plastic wrap or aluminum foil) scrap wrapping paper (not Christmas paper) and small pieces of scrap fabric and yarn - scrap pieces. Please place these in the container marked VBS under the table outside the church office.

MOVING ON UP - PROMOTION SUNDAY Traditionally, Aldersgate has held promotion Sunday the end of August for the next school year. However, the rising sixth graders now move up to the youth group at the beginning of June. We also have a number of year-round children in our program. Finally, all the children feel like they have been “promoted” to the next grade when they end their school year. Therefore, the Children’s Christian Formation Team will move the children to the next grade beginning with the summer Sunday school season on June 2nd. We will follow the Durham school policy, which observes the cut-off date of August 31 for grade decisions. Please contact Jane Brannock if you have any questions - Jane@aldersgate.org
SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL BEGINS ON JUNE 2ND. Can you give “Just One Hour!” ? We love all of our Sunday School teachers and would love to give them time off during the summer. They worked so hard throughout the year! Let’s show them how much we appreciate them! If you can teach or assist one or two Sundays this summer, please contact Jane Brannock @ jane@aldersgate.org or Linda Jones @ pjones1138@nc.rr.com
KIDS OWN WORSHIP NEEDS YOU! This is an important ministry to our children, but we cannot do it without enough folks willing to go to another service a couple of times a year and then be with these wonderful children during the 11:00 am service. Two adults are needed for each session. One person leads the time together and the other adult is there to assist. Contact Jane Brannock jane@aldersgate.org or Holly Fishback hfishback@nc.rr.com if you are interested in being a part of our children’s ministry.

LOVING (Love God through worship, and love our neighbor through service.)
NOTES from NAN
MUSIC MINISTRY “RECREATION SEASON"
… Praise with elation, praise every morning, God’s recreation of the new day.” I’ve always liked this wording in “Morning Has Broken” Actually, a hyphenated “re-creation” is probably what was meant in the hymn text, but, hey, God definitely likes to play, too! (If that’s not true, what’s up with armadillos?) Our Music Ministry is in its “recreation season.” Most of our ensembles take a well-deserved summer break (children’s choirs and handbells, and later on, even our Chancel choir and Praise Band.) We hope you miss us! In fact, we hope you miss us so much that you realize that you want to BE us, and come join us in the fall! All are invited and welcome! Meanwhile…
NEED SOME “MI-MI-MI” TIME? Now is a great time for Nan to spend some time with you to help you identify and grow your skills either as a singer or as a music reader! She can listen to your voice, give you some help on how to sound your best, and teach some healthy singing habits. Or, if you always wanted to learn how to read music, you can spend some time learning the basics to get started. Lessons are “free” – it surely will benefit AUMC’s music ministry for you to take some Mi-Mi-Mi time. So contact Nan for some one-on-one time nan@aldersgate.org or 477-0509 x 116
SUMMER REHEARSAL SCHEDULE CHANCEL CHOIR: Wednesday, June 5th, 12th & 19th- 7:30-9:00 pm - (off the 26th for VBS Week) July 3rd & 10th Sunday Morning Review will start a bit earlier to get everyone on board, at 7:55 am and/or 10:35am While our rehearsing will be a bit lighter, we will continue to sit up in the choir loft and offer anthems through the month of July. Join us! PRAISE TEAM: Tuesdays, 6:15-7:30 pm. (Off June 25th for VBS Week.) Singers and instrumentalists very welcome!
Carnegie By The Creek Our singers who recently sang at Carnegie Hall are excited that a morelocal concert of the same anthems, conducted by composers Joseph Martin and Pepper Choplin, will be offered this July at Buies Creek, NC! This will be a concert highlight of Campbell University’s summer “Oasis” Music and Worship conference, featuring the Carnegie concert’s ecumenical assembly of singers from all over the USA, and accompanied by a bluegrass band. (Note: special rehearsal for singers will be held by Pepper Choplin on June 26th, 7:00-8:45 pm at Greystone Baptist in Raleigh.) Everyone is invited to the concert, held on Monday, July 15th at 7:00 pm. If you’d like to hear this “replay” of Carnegie (by the Creek), contact Nan for arrangements regarding carpooling.

A MOMENT OF GRATITUDE BY JOYCE PENDERGRASS
I visited Aldersgate United Methodist Church after visiting and/or attending many other churches. The warm welcome I received on my first visit told me that I had found a home. Members and staff not only make you welcome, but offer so many opportunities. I have taken several Bible studies, small group studies, Alpha, and am now taking Disciple I. This church gives anyone that is interested the opportunity to learn God’s Word through all types of classes.

CONDUIT’s 25th ANNIVERSARY CONDUIT had a royal celebration of its 25th anniversary of working with the residents of Oxford Manor Public Housing Community. Some residents, representatives from the six churches in CONDUIT, and participants from past years gathered at Mt. Level Missionary Baptist Church on Saturday, May 4th at noon. After socializing over a delightful luncheon, Coach Bryan Umstead moderated a brief program. Rev. Bob Wallace gave the history of the beginning of CONDUIT, as he was a part of that. He was complimentary of Lee’s perseverance through these many years. Barbara Cameron of Mt. Level and vice-president of CONDUIT, presented Lee King with a beautiful plaque, honoring her service during those 25 years.
OXFORD MANOR GARDEN
The YMCA has started a community garden at Oxford Manor, just behind the community center. Some raised garden boxes have been planted with vegetables. Maintenance is to take place on Friday afternoons. CONDUIT churches are asked to send volunteers to work alongside the residents and YMCA workers to make a success of this endeavor to improve nutrition and community cooperation. Please let Lee King know if gardening is one of your special interests that you would like to share.

CONDUIT - SCHOOLS OUT FOR SUMMER PARTY! CONDUIT joined with the YMCA to celebrate the end of this year’s tutoring program at the Oxford Manor Community Learning Center. The school children and leaders alike really enjoyed the leftover “Aldersgate Punch” that Peggy Allen had made for the 25th Celebration. It was served in the crystal punch bowl, honoring the kids for coming all school year to get their homework done. Colleen made some wonderful chocolate chip cookies for Aldersgate’s contribution to the light supper. Two “graduates” from the program (who will be going to Middle High School) were honored with a certificate and an olive wood cross on a necklace by Duke’s Chapel UMC. The highlight of the program was David Anderson, telling a delightful story with different voices for different characters. We are so fortunate to have such talented folks in our church family. As the children left the party, they were able to choose 3 or 4 books to take home. These lovely, gently-used books were collected and donated by Holly Fishback’s school, the Sandra E. Lerner Jewish Community Day School on Cornwallis Road. Burton and Lee King were the only Aldersgate tutors this past school year, but we hope that some of you will be able to donate an hour and a half a week next year. The YMCA provides counselors for small groups, but CONDUIT tutors can work one-on-one with an elementary student. It really makes a difference in the lives of those children. Now those children have the opportunity to register for the YMCA’s Summer Day Camp for little or no expense. The Y bus will pick them up every weekday morning, take them to Camp High Hope on the campus of NCCU for camp activities and some refresher school work, and then take them back to Oxford Manor in the evening, for about two months. This is funded by the YMCA “We Build People” annual campaign.

A TECHNICOLOR PROMISE MUSIC AND ARTS CAMP has... DRAMA! There’s a part just for you! DANCE! We sing show-choir style, with lots of movement; and some may also learn special dance parts to some songs! ART! Help create backdrops and set pieces! And, of course, MUSIC! The songs are great, with plenty of solo opportunities too! Rise and Shine! - “A Technicolor Promise” Everyone loves a rainbow! Not only is it a wonder of creation, radiating beauty after a rain, but more importantly as a sign of the covenant, it reminds us of God’s overwhelming love and grace. “A Technicolor Promise,” by Allen Pote and Carole McCann, is a sometimes humorous but still truthful re-telling of the story of Noah and the Ark. WHEN: Monday, July 8 through Friday, July 12th - TIME: 9:00 am - 1:00 pm - COST: $55* FOR ages 6-13 - REGISTRATION for half-day camp is due by June 28th . Registration Brochures are at the Welcome Station or see Nan. (*For children attending AUMC’s Full-day Summer Camp Program, there is no additional fee or need to register separately for Music and Arts Camp week!) What’s the plan? - We plan to audition for some of the larger speaking parts (Noah, Mrs. Noah, and four storytellers) in June so that the week will be fun as well as amazing for all! Mostly, though, we’ll be learning “A Technicolor Promise” together from start to finish in one week! Through an exciting week of rehearsals, games, and activities, we will learn the story (including many other speaking parts and some solos), the songs and choreography, the play itself, and also create the set! It is fun, but pretty intensive - younger children should only come if they’re up for that! Sometimes we work in small groups, sometimes all together, and just the soloists, dancers, or main characters will have special practice times too. On Friday at 3:30 pm, we invite everyone in to see our show! M&A Camp Directors: Heidi Miller and Nan de Andrade Please share a brochure with neighborhood children/friends – we love children! Volunteers are needed! Contact Nan - Nan@aldersgate.org
SHOEBOX MINISTRIES - KICK-OFF JULY 7TH! Our shoebox ministry this year will be dedicated to Armenia in support, coordination and cooperation with the NC Conference. We are partnering with our Armenian Sisters and Brothers in our AGAPE Christmas Box Ministry. For many children in refugee communities located in the Kashatagh District, this is the only Christmas gift they will receive. For some of them, this will be the first toy they have ever received. Though these boxes may seem like a small gift, they will carry the priceless love of Christ . Children who receive these boxes will know that they have been remembered and loved. We hope that you might join us in this beautiful action that proclaims Jesus’s AGAPE. Look for more details coming soon ! For more information contact Sandra Reynolds - (919) 614-2154.

OLDER ADULT GATHERING AT LAKE JUNALUSKA The annual Festival of Wisdom and Grace for Older Adults of the Southeastern Jurisdiction will take place from July 29th – August 1st this summer. The purpose of this year’s conference is to enable and empower older disciples to serve Christ in the face of the fact that the world is at our doorsteps, via the internet, I-pods, Kindles, Facebook and many social media options. Seniors need not be left out nor left behind. We still have much to do and to offer to make real God’s will in our world today. As the folks from Aldersgate who attended last year can attest, it is worth the trip for the scenery, the music of the Junaluska Singers, the fellowship of seniors from all over the southeastern U.S., the workshops, the Bible Study by outstanding leaders, and, of course, the worship services. Offertory Prayer: Gracious God, giver of all good things, as we give our gifts, help us to shift our focus from what we have to what we have to give away. Help us in our giving to focus on the gift of peace that Christ gave to the disciples and that he offers to us. May the gifts we offer bring peace to lives that are in turmoil, hearts that are troubled, and people who live in fear. We pray this in the holy name of Jesus the Christ. Amen.
