A LDERSGATE U NITED M ETHODIST C HURCH
Experience M ARCH 2016 FIVE REASONS WHY WE SHRINK BACK WHEN GOD CALLS US HIGHER 1. Fear of the battle. All who follow Christ are called to active duty. When we step into the fray of spiritual warfare, or if we are wounded in the conflict, we are prone to run away. 2. Resistance to God's Presence. We love to sing about God, but when we get close to Him, we learn that His holiness is uncomfortable. It makes us aware of our own sin, purifies motives and consumes offenses. It won't tolerate secret idols. It is painful to our lower nature, but the best place for us to be is in His presence. 3. Unwillingness to be broken. Those who want to follow Jesus all the way must submit to His deepest dealings. The One who wrestled with Jacob and gave him a permanent limp wants to overpower our pride and selfishness as well. We say we want to know Him fully, but we forget that He schedules us for surgery when necessary. His knife hurts, but it makes us more like Him. 4. Reluctance to face persecution. Those who follow Christ wholeheartedly share in His sufferings. When Paul said he wanted to know Jesus, he knew that he would have to partake in the “fellowship of Christ’s sufferings.” Please don't let the ungodly actions of people stop us from chasing God. 5. Refusal to become a voice for others. Ultimately, God wants to send us to a mission field--whether it is on the other side of the globe or in the office next door. We tend to recoil from such assignments because they are never convenient, and always require boldness and faith. Like Jonah, we run in the opposite direction when God asks us to speak for Him.

STEPHEN MINISTRY WORKSHOP SATURDAY, APRIL 2, 2016 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM ALDERSGATE UMC FAMILY LIFE CENTER STEPHEN MINISTRY INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP Aldersgate UMC will host a half-day Stephen Ministry Introductory workshop on April 2nd from 9 AM to 1 PM in the Family Life Center. Hundreds of churches from across the Triangle Region have been invited to learn about this meaningful caregiving ministry that has blessed our congregation since 2003. This ministry is a key to AUMC’s pastoral care emphasis for it recruits and trains lay caregivers who provide high-quality, one-to-one Christian care to members who are experiencing difficulties in life. Such difficulties might include: the loss of a job, a debilitating illness, divorce, or some other loss that leaves a person hurting and feeling all alone? Any member of AUMC is invited to attend this workshop free . It will provide you with an excellent opportunity to learn more about how Stephen Ministers provide comfort and support to grieving members. At the workshop, you will experience a sample of Stephen Ministry training and learn caregiving skills you can put to use right away. If you want to register to attend this workshop, or if you need more information, please call Jack Snyder at 919-477-0509 Ext. 303, or at Jack@aldersgate.org.

MUSIC NOTES PRAY WITH US FOR A VOLUNTEER LEADER FOR OUR SACRED DANCE PROGRAM! As you know, Aldersgate has a wonderful legacy of beautiful sacred dancers contributing to our worship. We are in need of some women with dance experience or a heart for sacred dance to begin leading these groups. We have one elementary group, Young Dancers, who have been dancing on Sunday afternoons. The youth Sacred Dance group has traditionally practiced on Sunday after Youth group. (These times are not set in stone; we could poll interest and availability based on the leaders schedule!) If you would like to know more about this, please contact Nan (nan@aldersgate.org) . Resource materials/training are available! Let’s not let this legacy die – we have young girls very interested in continuing to serve.
CAPITOL ON THE EDGE BRINGS NICAVANGELISTS TO ALDERSGATE! On April 10-14, a gr oup of 15 youth and leader s fr om NICARAGUA will be coming to Alder sgate! This will be an amazing opportunity to widen our understanding and deepen our love for all of God’s kin-dom! Capital on the Edge, a non-profit organization, utilizes a holistic approach, assisting young Nicaraguans in their life’s journey, encouraging them to grow physically, emotionally and spiritually. This ministry takes in at-risk youths from the streets of Managua into a talentdevelopment-program, “the Nicavangelists.” In this program, they are given food, housing, clothing, an education and the chance to develop skills in performance arts. The Nicavangelists seek to create a bright future for these incredibly gifted youths by giving them opportunities to share their talents and culture with the world. Those who excel in the Nicavangelists program are given the chance to leave our center in Managua and tour abroad, performing a 40 minute long, street theatre production, CREATED. Todate, the Nicavangelists have travelled to and performed in Nicaragua, Panama, El Salvador, Guatemala and the “Created” is the story of hope realized. We are all born into a specific context and it is our M USIC N OTESUSA. BY N AN DE A NDRADE choices that ultimately determine our future happiness. The performance utilizes many different genres of music, from acid jazz, to heavy metal, punk rock, classical, charted hits, and of course, Latino music. Dance genres include Nicaraguan folk dancing, salsa, bachata, tricking (gymnastics) and modern. Connect and learn more about our guests from their Facebook page “The Nicavangelists,” from their website, www.nicavangelists.com or watch them perform and give testimony on youtube: https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=KW6W55SSx9E, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ajm0wt3Ddv0, https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dhkqy34np6Y HELP NEEDED! The Guatemala Sewing Mission began in 1987 in San Juan Ostuncalco. From the purchase of that first Singer sewing machine, a sewing school evolved. Since the formal sewing school began in the year 2000, over 700 students have graduated where they learned skills that they now use to help support their families. Guatemala has the 4th highest rate of chronic malnutrition in the world and 49% of the children under the age of 5 go to bed hungry. On November 22, 2015, a new Sewing School was dedicated in the remote village of Las Barrancas, Guatemala. The local church provided a room in their church while the school was being built, and the local church also donated land for the school to be built. The women of Las Barrancas are so excited and proud of their new Sewing School and are most appreciative to Aldersgate for helping to make this dream a reality. In less than one year, over $16,000 was raised by Aldersgate, other churches, and individuals from Ohio to Mississippi to Florida. During the dedication of the new Sewing School, a beautiful embroidered thank- you note was presented by the Women’s Society of the Mam Presbyterian Church of Jesus of the True Light to Aldersgate United Methodist Church for our support for the new Sewing School. Many of the students in the school are also members of the local church.

Allow the Light of My healing Presence to shine into the deepest recesses of your being—cleansing, healing, refreshing, and renewing you. Trust Me enough to accept the full forgiveness that I offer you continually. This great gift, which cost Me My Life, is yours for all eternity. Forgiveness is at the very core of My abiding Presence. Scripture Text: Joshua 1:5—No one shall be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you. Equip us to take on your easy yoke, and make us gentle and humble in heart. Amen. Scripture Text: Matthew 11:28-30—“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. When you think about AUMC’s finances, more than likely numbers, commas, and decimals come to mind. Some may think of the annual budget. Others may think about monthly giving or the church’s capital debt. While these are important aspects of the church’s finances, they are not our most important numbers. The real story is what your generous and faithful financial support of the church makes possible – creating disciples of Christ. It is the lives touched, needs met, and relationships deepened with our Lord and Savior. Throughout the remainder of the year in addition to being transparent with how the church is operating financially, the finance committee wants to highlight a few of the numbers you make possible each month.
Aldersgate Umc Durham Nc, contributed 1052 units of food to Community Backpack Ministry and Durham Urban Ministries (via Durham Food Pantry Network). What a tremendous outpouring of love and generosity! We pray with and in return Are blessed by the many people that come to Drive Thru Prayer the 1st Tuesday of each month. March 1st we prayed with over fifteen people.
MANY WAYS TO GIVE One convenient way to give is to set up an EFT or electronic funds transfer. You can give a one-time gift or set up weekly, or monthly donations. You can set it up yourself by going to our Aldersgate.org web site and then selecting Mission & Giving and then On-line giving or by contacting our church treasurer. You can make donations to the operating budget, the capital campaign or to special ministries such as the community backpack ministry or urban ministries, or make a special memorial gift. Another way to give is by donating shares of stock. We use the United Methodist Foundation and Morgan Stanley to assist us with gifts of stock. If you are interested in this option just contact Mary Taylor by email at mary@aldersgate.org and she will give you or your stock broker the necessary paperwork to transfer the stock. Thanks for all that you do to support the many missions and ministries of Aldersgate.
