Experience “SAYING GOOD-BYE” By now many of you know that the church will be going through a transition this summer. Tara and I will be leaving to take appointments in Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach. Rev. Homer Morris has been appointed to be your new senior pastor and our very own Rev. Jack Snyder will become the Minister of Visitation. Meanwhile, we have also hired Andrew Woods to be the new Youth Director to follow Rob Tucker, who is graduating in May and taking an appointment in Florida. That probably feels like a lot of change all at once. The truth is it is. But the people who are joining the Aldersgate staff this summer are excellent at what they do. They will be able to help the church grow while challenging, teaching, nurturing, leading, and comforting you and others along the way. Homer, Jack, and Andrew are deeply committed to Christ and are also deeply committed to ministering in His name. Altogether, they have served local churches professionally for more than 50 years combined. That’s a lot of experience they are bringing to Aldersgate. You are going to be blessed by their leadership. Still, in many ways I can’t believe this is all happening. It probably won’t feel real until several weeks after we’ve actually moved. After six years here I knew the possibility of a move was going to increase each year, but I was

still surprised to receive the call this spring. It was a difficult decision to make. But given the fact that none of the children had started high school yet and given the opportunity to move to the same hometown where Tara’s family still lives we said “yes.” We had truly thought we would be staying at Aldersgate longer; but we also knew this possibility was not going to come around again.

have given us all opportunities to be our best selves and even when we weren’t our best selves you continued to love us anyway. Let’s not hit the pause button over these next two months. We don’t have to stop being in relationship with one another. And, by all means, the church doesn’t have to suddenly stop moving forward either. Change, while sometimes hard, can often lead to extraordinary growth. Let’s all keep our eyes on Jesus. Aldersgate has remained a faithful church for nearly 60 years now. And I feel confident that Aldersgate will remain faithful for generations to come.

Nevertheless, I never would have left Aldersgate if I thought the church was in a bad place. We’re not. Oh sure, there’s plenty of work to be done. There always is. There always will be. But we’ve come so far in six years. We May the Peace of Christ have grown physically, be with you, numerically, emotionally, and most of all, spiritually. This is a great church. I hate to leave. Pastor Doug We have loved Aldersgate. And I think it has become easy to love Aldersgate because you have loved me and my family. Can you believe that Olivia was starting second grade when we arrived? Emily was starting Kindergarten, and Everett was only two. You have nurtured our children. You have taken in our family. I will never be able to repay you all for all the kindness you have shown to me, to my wife, and to my kids. You

JULY 13th - 17th “WHAT’S UP ZAC?” MUSIC AND DRAMA WEEK “What’s Up Zak? A Musical Encounter with Jesus” by Open Heart Musicals. Funny, lively songs introduce a town bustling to prepare for a visit from a V.I.P.: Very Important Prophet. The Mayor of Jericho decides to throw a parade to welcome Jesus. But the people who need love the most, the lowly beggars and the tax collectors, are not invited to the party. The musical explores how special Bartimaeus the Blind Beggar and Zacchaeus the Tax Collector must have felt to learn that Jesus saw them, and loved them just the way they were! It’s a wonderful story for people of all ages. There will be lots of opportunity to shine with lots of fun acting and singing roles!

LISTEN TO THE SUNDAY SERMONS …...ANYTIME ! PODCASTING COMES TO ALDERSGATE! For years audio from weekly worship services has been recorded and made available for listening through our church website, www.aldersgate.org. One of the capabilities of our new website provider is the ability to easily make the sermon audio available not only through our website, but also through a podcast. A podcast is simply another way to listen to the sermon each week. It’s the same audio file that’s published each week to the website, but it’s accessed differently – most commonly through iTunes or smartphones. You can ‘subscribe’ to a particular podcast (like AUMC Durham), and each week when the sermon is uploaded to the website your podcast subscription will be automatically updated! MISSIONS Haiti Mission Ministry, February, 2015 trip. Clinique Sainte d ’Esprit, Croix des Bouquets, Haiti. Once again the Haiti Ministry team would like to thank the church for your financial, emotional and spiritual support of the team going to serve this year. Personally I am thankful for Regina Whitaker, Virginia Crank (Ellis Chapel UMC), Diane Wingo (Pilmoor UMC), Tammy Closs and Pam Boatright for answering the call to go and share their skills and love which comes from their love of Christ with the Haitian people. I wanted to share a glimpse into the week with the church because you are an integral part of this ministry. “Now I can see the mangoes.” That was a statement often heard by those fitting the elderly with glasses at the Kkottangnae Village in Haiti. This is a warm and inviting community sponsored by the Korean Catholic church charged with taking care of ‘the least of these’ in Haiti. Those forgotten are the elderly who can no longer beg and help care for the family and those who are intellectually disabled. The small but powerful group of six women who journeyed from Durham to Haiti was fortunate to have the opportunity to show the love of Christ to those in the community who needed to have eye exams and or physicals. Many of the elders do not read but can do hand work. Not being able to thread a needle can make this task quite difficult and our eye team often helps to remedy this challenge. But the team also learned something new this year. Low powered readers can help one find mangoes. The compound has numerous mango trees and these are wonderful treats (just ask Tammy.) However if one cannot see them, one cannot eat them. That changed for many this year as the team learned from those who explained that they did not read, they did not sew but they liked to eat mangoes. Who knew?

“We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well, because you had become so dear to us.” 1 Thessalonians 2:8. Besides the deep desire to go and spread the Gospel to others and actively demonstrate the love of Christ through providing visual and physical care, this ministry is about relationships. The relationship with have forged with Dr. Romel helps support his work to provide health care to the poor in his community. It is his community and we stand alongside him in service. Our focus on Christ as the center of all that we do has allowed us to have a mutually fulfilling relationship. This is also true with those who interpret for us. We live together, work together, play together, celebrate Valentine’s Day and birthdays together and worship together. We are interdependent and in our unity we hope to show those who we serve together – “that with one heart and mouth you (WE) may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 15:6, despite our differences in race, gender and economic status. We are thirteen.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 Many of us on this year’s trip went to Haiti with heavy hearts. Concern for elderly and ill parents and situations at home were on our hearts and minds. How wonderful it was to enter into a small Christian church in the community of Lillavios that first day and see how the Lord greeted us. These banners were a constant reminder our first two days that we are not alone and he has a place for us to lay our burdens down. How great was that!

Missions Haiti Mission Ministry, February, 2015 trip. (continued) Clinique Sainte d ’Esprit, Croix des Bouquets, Haiti. It was a wonderful, dusty, busy week filled with the smile of Father Mike who had not been able to read his Bible until he got new glasses, children whose ear aches would finally stop, praying without ceasing, sharing the Gospel, roosters who don’t know the meaning of dawn and salsa dancing with sixty of our closest Haitian septuagenarian friends. If you’d like to know more about our church’s ministry effort in Haiti, please contact April Perry, April Twine or me. No experience necessary, just a willingness to stretch oneself and watch God work through you.

The Trustees have been asked to consider having Aldersgate UMC participate in the Adopt-A-Highway Program. Before committing to this program, the Trustees would like to gage the interest of various Aldersgate groups regarding participation.

  

SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS PROGRAM:  There is a 4 year commitment to sign up for the program.  We would be required to make a minimum of 4 pickups per year (more if needed). We would request a 2 mile section of Umstead Road, beginning at Guess Road. Minimum age for participation is 12, youth 12-17 will need adult supervision. NCDOT will provide gloves, safety vests, trash bags and training.

The Adopt-A-Highway Program (AAH) was established in 1988 by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) in response to growing public concern regarding litter along the state's highways. The AAH Program is administered by the NCDOT Office of Beautification, and is a joint effort between community volunteers and the NCDOT. Its purpose is to decrease the amount of litter on North Carolina's roadsides and improve the beauty and quality of the environment. Use this link to find out more Apply to Adopt A Highway Online. There are reporting and record keeping requirements, and there will need to be an overall program manager. Volunteers are welcome. What Trustees are soliciting now is interest of various groups, classes and organizations within the Aldersgate family to participate in a clean-up effort once a year or so. If your small group, class or organization would be interested please contact: Glenn Reynolds - ge.reynolds26@yahoo.com

MUSIC NOTES

(CONTINUED)

SPOTIFY YOUR PRAISE Spotify is a free application for computers or smart phones/pads/pods that plays music from playlists built by members. Each month, Nan creates a playlist of the music which will be sung that month at our 9:30 Contemporary worship service. Search for Nan de Andrade and then choose the month’s playlist (for example, right now AUMC May 2015). You can “tune your heart” all week, and be even more ready to praise God on Sunday mornings! Hope you’ll give it a try – and if you encounter problems, give Nan a call!

KEEP THE BUZZ GOING……. Did you hear something at worship this week that went down deep? Maybe a line of a hymn or anthem, or a quote or point of the sermon; maybe you experienced Christ’s love in a new way, or were touched by the prayer. Why not share it with others? A simple FB post or a Tweet, a conversation around the table or water fountain can be used by the Holy Spirit to invite, encourage, or remind others (and even yourself) of the blessing of gathering in God’s house for worship. So don’t be shy, share the good news - you never know what power might be released for God’s glory!

UNITED METHODIST MEN All men of Aldersgate are invited to attend the Durham Bulls game on Tuesday, June 23, 2015. This is our regular monthly meeting night. Gather up your buddies and invite them to join the AUMC Methodist Men as the Bulls take on the Toledo Mud Hens. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are $11 and available from Jeff Sturkey (919-479-8742 or jeffsturkey1@gmail.com). Reservations (to Jeff) must be received by Monday, June 1st

Worship Wonderings…. a series on worship practices by Nan de Andrade Why do we do what we do in corporate worship? Each act in our service has a purpose and a tradition that carries deep meaning and intention. Many are centuries-old and some have even evolved into new meanings. This series will take a moment to look into some of our practices at Aldersgate so that we can all enjoy a richer experience of worship of God on Sunday mornings. Past articles include: The Shape of Worship, the Offering, the Sacrament of Holy Communion, Standing in Worship, Corporate Worship, An Overview of the Christian Year, Acolytes and Candle, Ecumenical Spirit in Worship, Paschal Mystery, Special flowers, and Theology in Architecture

THEOLOGY IN ARCHITECTURE II After writing on our sanctuary’s architecture last month, Rev. Bob Wallace, who served as Aldersgate’s pastor at the time of the building of our sanctuary, shared with me some more of the interesting aspects of the design. Here’s some of what he shared with me. Think our Sanctuary and Narthex are too small? Though it sometimes seems that way to us now, building the Sanctuary to seat up to 250 people was a brave and ambitious decision for the much-smaller (but faithful) church at the time! The atrium-like Narthex with windows was designed to encourage the sense and practice of community. Wonder why the parking lot did not allow drive-through until our most-recent building project? Also, note that the parking lots are atypically set back and away from the front of the building. The architect wanted people to “experience the space” before entering. Did you notice we have a table for communion, but that flowers and candles are placed at the window? That window “shelf” is called a “re-table” and was installed later; set higher than the table for visibility, though usually the Lord’s Table is to be the highest level in the chancel. It was ordered by the Duke Endowment Committee, which, since they helped with the funding of our church, had some say in the design. One charming little piece of trivia: the mortar for our white-block walls did not appear white, as planned, so it was painted white… with white shoe polish (!), an expedient purchase from the old Jimmy’s Store (at the corner of Guess and Umstead, now closed). Bob Wallace is a treasure-trove of history for Aldersgate. He is working on a detailed history of our first 35 years, and I hope we will encourage him to complete it before our 60th anniversary (2016)! Celebrating our history, and blessing God for all those who dreamed and sacrificed so that Aldersgate could be the “Cornerstone of a Caring Community” which we know, builds up our faith. As Paul’s attests in Hebrews, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us.”

Thank you seems so small to express our gratitude for the outpouring of Christ's Love from our Aldersgate Family. Our family has been so supported by your prayers, cards, visits, amazing food, and in participation in the memorial service for John. Through your acts of kindness we have truly been wrapped in the caring arms of Christ through our journey. In sincere appreciation, All of the Slaters and Stanleys

Dear Aldersgate Church Family: Thank you for your love and support on the death of my father on March 15th. The cards, phone calls, visits and presence at his service meant so much to Peggy and me. Peace and Grace, Carl Allen

Aldersgate UMC has shown its support for the Interfaith Hospitality Network in many ways throughout the years. Our congregation opens its arms and hearts to welcome our IHN families several times a year and helps them through a rough time. That support has taken on a new dimension with recent monetary support from various sources. Several folks are making a regular offering to support IHN. On April 2nd, the offering collected at the Maundy Thursday service was earmarked for IHN. Because of your generosity, our church will be donating $900.00 to the IHN program. Durham IHN receives most of its operating expenses from grants and contributions from individuals and churches here in Durham. There is always a need for funds to help fill the gaps for families arriving at IHN, with money being used to buy school clothes and supplies, groceries, clothes for jobs and job interviews… all those “little” items that can add up to a lot of money. Our generous contribution to IHN will make a big difference in the lives of these families. Thank you so much for your kindness and support. Susan Gay

WHAT ARE OUR NUMBERS? When you think about AUMC’s finances, more than likely numbers, comas, and decimals come to mind. Some may think of the annual budget. Others may think about monthly giving or the church’s capital debt. While these are important aspects of the church’s finances, they are not our most important numbers. The real story is what your generous and faithful financial support of the church makes possible – creating disciples of Christ. It is the lives touched, needs met, and relationships deepened with our Lord and Savior. Throughout the remainder of the year in addition to being transparent with how the church is operating financially, the finance committee wants to highlight a few of the numbers you make possible each month.
