Mindful Living

Gene

vieve @g e n e . v i . e v e

Genevieve is a multi-media artist, director, and creative director. born to a mountain above the sea in Big Sur, California. she developed her relationship to the arts in writing, film, dance, and photography. She has lived and traveled around the world. She currently resides in Los Angeles and works as a creative consultant and director for various brands, musicians, and resorts.

26

E&E: What are the main projects

I’m working on a million things. Something real adults to choose a career path. Even seasoned creatives hav work will be better if I focus it. Would it be writing, o think that’s the 2018 world I exist in. And friend Fatima Robinson really inspires me – ‘dancer’ ‘choreographer’ ‘creative director’ maintains all of them. She once expressed other, like a living organism. I could started a new endeavor in collaborating hotel/hot spring Two Bunch Palms in really rewarding and unique from my that came out of my upbringing at that sense of fate – like it was bigger synchronistic purpose. 29

E&E: What inspires you to create? Genevieve: Life experience. Most of the videos I write come out of my inner world, or a related world to the artist I am working with. Something that we’ve both experienced or witnessed. Or in the case of Two Bunch palms, the practices I want to learn or integrate into my life. I recently found this artist in Joshua Tree who will start teaching at “Two Bunch” in the winter. She works in painting and sculpture, but the class we are integrating is a comic (graphic novel) writing class in which the participant writes a comic of their life experience. When management did the sample class with her, it was really special to feel how unpressurized and subconscious the experience was. I like learning new ways to connect with my inner self because it’s easy for all of us to find ways to live on the surface and avoid depth. Like scrolling through Instagram, or the internet. I guess finding ways to keep my own personal growth activated is what inspires me the most because it’s how I think I can inspire others to do the same.

keep my personal growth activated.

a lust for travel.

33

E&E: For you, where is your dream place to travel? To live? Genevieve: I’ve had a lust for travel ever since I can remember, but lately I’ve really wanted to slow down and stay in one place. Earlier today, I was speaking with a friend, about places that give you energy and places that drain your energy. We agreed that the Caribbean is an environment that always gives energy. I would love to spend more time exploring the islands, I love island energy. I think it’s familiar because Big Sur is kind of like an island community. You even see it in the vocabulary - like if people are running late, they’re on ‘big sur time’ or ‘island time.’ Or the way that there are these unspoken rules of the land. It’s like this golden thread that holds people together in an inexplicable way. It’s a bond that exists in history and culture. You only become privy to it as you pay attention, observe and integrate. I like places that make you work for a sense of belonging, And once you belong, it’s a part of you and you’re a part of it forever. That’s how I feel about Trinidad. I’d like to spend more time there soon.

34

E&E: How does passion and purpose play a role in your work? Genevieve: I only know how to work from a place of passion and purpose. Otherwise, my work falls flat. It’s both a blessing and a curse that I lack a poker face. In college, it was required that everyone write a thesis their senior year. I was lucky in that I had fallen in love with my thesis. I had this affair with a Trinidadian guy while studying abroad in Europe and thus, decided to take a course

in Berlin on Caribbean short fiction. In the course, I noticed this linguistic nuance that East Indian and Afro-Trinidadians demonstrate to show cultural distinction from one another. I pursued it in a final paper and then embarked on a thesis that required me to go do field work in the country. I became invested in the people I met. I felt like I had unlocked a key to my own soul. I realized I need to fall in love with things to do them well. I’ve utilized this approach to all work ever since. Authenticity and personality is everything in the days of performativity and fleeting memories.

35

unlocked a key to my soul.

36

37

E&E: How do you use social media in a mindful way to promote your work/brand?

Genevieve: I try to keep my social media as authentic and in line with my personality as possible because My ‘brand’ is myself. And my lifestyle is the things I love. I really stand by how I live my life because I am happy, and the older I get, the more I realize that that isn’t true for everyone. Hopefully, my projects and my life, as portrayed on social media, encourage people to live their authentic lives and incorporate human experiences and interactions more in their daily lives. I spend a lot of time in nature and naked. But it’s not sexual and I think it’s important to share that. I hope I’m naked in nature at 80 years old. I take a lot of naked baths with my 70 year old mom and my boyfriend at esalen. We love to tell people about it because I think it’s both shocking and inspiring. I want to break weird stigmas, I want people to be proud of their moms for being their weird selves. So mostly, that’s what I share in social media: my mom, my art and practices, nature, my boyfriend, my amazing friends and their art. It’s the stuff I think should be appreciated and not taken too seriously. 38

E&E: How important is collaboration

Genevieve: Collaboration is essential. I can’t do anythin many people in the world that can better realize my v started my professional artistic career in photograph have always known of someone better. So, as I’ve mov experiences, I’ve tried to include my old classmate, Nic much as she’ll have me. She captures something mystic wanted to take photos myself, I could. But why would part of creating special things is losing your ego and fit for a role. Thus, I collaborate on everything. I have friends whose work speaks to and influences me, so work shapes who I am now too. E&E: What are you dreaming up for the future?

Genevieve: I want to make my first short film this year and c Two Bunch Palms. One of my gifts is bringing people togethe bigger than ourselves, because we are. I want to grow that

e&E: Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Where do you s
