letter from the editor: Grateful, proud, and in awe - I’m humbled everyday by eyes&edge. This past month led us on so many incredible experiences: NYFW, co-production of a top tier fashion show, Milan fashion week, and of course - lots of exciting new content. and while our reach has expanded to the opposite coast and beyond, we’ve stayed rooted in West Coast culture.

As editor of this publication, there’s much to be proud of - but the major message for me right now is growing together. It’s easy to look forward with anticipation, or back with scrutiny. as we embark on this next volume and beyond, all i can do is express my gratitude for what we’re doing presently. Every second is an opportunity to be celebrated let’s revel in this together.

This week in Northern Hollywood, we sat down with MTV sensation and celebrity influencer, Taylor Selfridge. A known model, (with over 364K followers) she’s easily spotted. Her long hair, blue eyes, radiant smile, and beach ready body, are classiCALLY attractive. But sitting down with her offered a healthy reminder to always look beyond. Like many celebrities, Taylor is subject to appearance-based scrutiny. But just like the average bear, Taylor still lives her day-to-day with challenges; ones which she’s even recently opened-up about, to encourage advocacy. Read on to find out what makes this babe as sweet as she looks.

E&E: Where are you from originally? Taylor: Portland, Oregon. E&E: You’re a notable influencer with over 364K followers. How did your rise to fame occur? taylor: My work on MTV’s “Are you the One, (2016),” and “Ex on the Beach (2018).”

E&E: What prompted your move to Los Angeles? Taylor: Work opportunities. I moved to LA after my first show on MTV.

E&E: What were those show experiences like? Taylor: Fun and Really hard. I mean, you have no contact with your family and friends for like a month. It’s definitely challenging, but a once in a lifetime experience.

Having my own personal struggles, while being in the spotlight is definitely a challenge, but also a great opportunity to bring awareness and make a difference.

E&E: What’s your favorite way to unwind and manage anxiety? Taylor: A Glass of wine, me time. You can figure out the rest.

Mindful Livng

20

E&E: What does mindful living mean to you? Marina: To practice mindful living, one must maintain a

21

moment-by-moment awareness of one’s feelings, thoughts, bodily sensations and one’s surrounding environment. A mindful lifestyle seeker strives to have a positive control over their life, to align with their higher purpose, and to refrain from passing judgement about others.

E&E: Why do you feel called towards this path? Why is this an important movement for our world right now?

Marina: My inspiration for being a zero waste vegan lifestylist arose after my life-changing experience at the young age of ten visiting my father’s home country of Pakistan. Here I was exposed to environmental degradation at an alarming rate and extreme poverty. Upon becoming ill and blowing my nose into a tissue one night where I witnessed black mucus from the air pollution, I knew it was my calling to work towards building a more conscious, just, and sustainable world.

“Looking across the world at the present time it is obvious to anybody at all who has even the slightest bit of biological knowledge that human numbers are already out of balance.” - Professor Aubrey Manning, Zoologist Two hundred years ago, there were less than a billion people on Earth. Today, there are 7.6 billion and our population is only growing. According to the United Nations, unless we take action there is likely to be 30% more of us by 2050 and 11 billion people by 2100. While this wouldn’t be a problem if resources on earth were infinite, they are not. Every one of us places demands upon our planet—the very demands that have caused the changes that threaten us and the natural world we depend on.

22

A few examples of how our earth has changed because of humankind that never CEASE to amaze me: -Scientists estimate that 150-200 species of plant, insect, bird, and mammal become extinct every 24 hours. This is nearly 1,000 times the “natural” or “background” rate and, say biologists, is greater than anything the world has experienced since the vanishing of the dinosaurs nearly 65m years ago. -the average American creates 4.5 pounds of waste a day. -The Arctic region may have its first completely ice-free summer by 2040. As individuals and communities, we can and must ease the pressure on our world. Simple actions such as buying less, reusing more, moving towards a plant-based diet and nsuring what we do, use and consume is as sustainable as possible are all actions I seek to empower people to take through my social media presence and recently launched product Zero Waste Kit.

E&E: How do you use social media in a mindful way to promote your work/brand? Marina:Daily posts and weekly videos featuring content that seeks to inspire others to take action in their life for the betterment of their life, the lives of those around them and the world at large.

24 30

E&E: When did you start your endeavor(s)? How did you receive this download? Marina: The start of my activist journey was in my bedroom with a journal. I would write down ideas for how to tackle global issues such as pollution, climate change and global economic inequality. I brought these ideas to life in my local community where I volunteered at Heifer Project InternationaL AND banned styrofoam trays at my middle school, WHILE I ALSO Worked on placing a plastic bag ban in my town.

E&E: For you, where is your dream place to travel? Marina: I dream of traveling the whole world. There are few things more enjoyable for me than meeting new people and learning their cultures and way of life. Places that come to mind first that I would love to visit include India, Morocco, Egypt, Australia, Ireland, Italy and Greece. I would love to live in community (perhaps an eco village) on a farm someday. Working on projects together, growing our own food and cooking together?

26

E&E: How does passion and purpose play a role in your work? Marina: Passion and purpose are the building blocks of my work in this world. With passion, I create and with purpose I stay aligned and inspired. Before I begin any project, I ask myself two questions: is this something I am passionate about pursuing regardless of it’s a huge “success” or not? and is this project aligned with my higher purpose? If both of those are yes’s it’s a no brainer for me.

27

E&E: What are you dreaming up for the future? Marina: If I’ve done what I’ve set out to do, in five years I will see a global shift in consciousness and lifestyle change around our global waste crisis and consumption.

28

Alarming statistics such as the average American creates 4.5 pounds of waste will have decreased; less marine life will be washing ashore with plastic inside of their bodies; and more opportunity will arise for communities around the world to get involved in the low impact lifestyle movement, such as the creation of more bulk stores, educational programs in schools, household shifts and policy change. There is a lot of work that needs to be done, and if my social media presence and recently launched {Zero} Waste Kit can play a role in empowering people with the tools, mindsets and convenience they need to reduce their ecological footprint, I am fulfilled.

E&E: Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Where do you see the world in 10 years?

Marina: In 10 years, I see myself with an even larger global following of change makers who are working together to make the world a better place. The way I have seen the zero waste vegan movement grow on social media in the last few years leaves me feeling very optimistic about our future. In 10 years from now, I imagine the world with more solutions and actions being taken for the 30 betterment of people, planet and profit.
