The Evolution of Typography By Holly Nation
Used Modification
My final modification that I decided to go with was round the serifs to give a soft looking approach. I named it Century shores because of the soft edges.
Where the concept came from • Century shores and century schoolbook is an old looking type so I decided to go back to the beginning and make a book about the History of typography. • I picked to use a trade book (15cm x 23cm) using cream uncoated pages.
Steps • I drew out my ideas on scrap paper and also measured out the size of the book. • Looked at ideas on Google and Pintrest
• I noticed most old books the content was present in columns and used patterns. • I looked at old books made modern
• I then picked out a vintage wallpaper pattern to include in the book. • I found an old frame that is commonly used for titles of old old books.
• With the content I put into the InDesign document and tested different layouts for the title, contents, chapter beginning and body copy. • My favorite layout went as the master page.
Reasoning for using the concept for the book • The content was from articles from I Love Typography. • The text is written in a modern way, so I wanted to design it based on modern vintage. • Vintage would include the old that the text is about. • The modern would include how the text is written.
Your Grid structure
Point size of typeface and other technical parts • The Point Size in my book for body copy is 7.5 • Subheadings are in small cap bolt • The drop cart, drops 3 lines
Title
Contents Â
Chapter Beginning • I included roman numerals and the actual chapter number to con4nue the theme of mixing new with old.
Body Copy 1 • Body copy 1 is used for the first two pages after the beginning of the chapter. • The introduction into the chapter is always put first and is half a column bigger than the other content because it is more important. • Has the drop caps
Body Copy 2 • Body Copy 2 is used if there is any remaining content that another page has to be created. • The remaining content is under sub headings. • Each subheading is the beginning of a new column
What I have learnt and what I would change • I have now know to keep you files together when creating an InDesign document. • I would change the layout of the body copy • Make the book more engaging
