Kate Piekutowski Artist Kate Piekutowski recently completed a Masters of Fine Art and Design at UTAS, majoring in printmaking. Kate’s impressive body of work consists mainly of etching, a historic technique that she says evokes memory and nostalgia. A first-generation child from Polish migrants, her inspiration is drawn from European history and ancestry. Kate uses a monochromatic palette, intersperses of red and melancholic line expression to create pieces that are intriguing and beautiful.

spoon s av v y designed & made by

Angela Lowe Angela Lowe loves spoons. This dangerous affair sees her delving deep into the dusty corners of antique stores and second hand shops mining for these sought after objects. The odd fork is a desired object too. Stainless, silver, enameled or EPNS plate, these relics are carted home to the Spoon Savvy workshop, hammered, filed, bent, buffed and polished into a range of savvy jewellery and home ware designs. Angela’s passion for what is old gives life to something new. She sees her focus on this medium as providing a vessel to explore a world of design through a simple object, the humble spoon.

t h e w h o, the what & t h e w h y. . . the market is a boutique art + design event, showcasing independent Tasmanian designers, makers and producers. It is held six times a year in the intriguing Masonic Temple, Hobart. Since its inception in 2009, it has become widely known for its exciting line up of exclusively local labels, along with its firm focus on authenticity and craftsmanship. With an impressive collection of exhibitors from a wide range of disciplines, visitors to the market can expect to see established fashion illustrators sitting alongside small scale producers of bespoke ceramics. A very particular approach to stallholder selection ensures that while exhibitors are vastly different in almost every way, they all have a common thread; creative talent, a demonstrated integrity in their business ethos and original thought in their design process.

the market is carefully curated by Shannon Robertson & Holly Webber, who are committed in their mission to unearthing and showing off Tasmania’s veritable web of undiscovered talent, world-class products and the intriguing stories and inspiration behind the commercial reality of small scale designers and makers. In addition to their regular market events, the girls have recently hosted pop - up events at the Cancer Council Girls Day Out and at the Sustainable Living Festival. In 2013 they held Show & Tell, a forest-themed night exhibition of their stallholders, as part of the Festival of Voices programme. Alongside co-curating the market, Holly & Shannon both run successful small businesses of their own and bring to the market their skills in graphic design, journalism, advertising, creative writing and marketing. This helps them to provide exhibitors with a platform, valuable exposure and a reach for their products that extends beyond market day.
