Describe your work / studio space. My workspace has slowly crept its way right through our house... from the MDF board covered in hooks on the bathroom ceiling which suspends anywhere up to 30 plants; all of which have a penchant for a dunk in the clawfoot bath below...to the heavy duty hooks in the kitchen ceiling where macramĂŠ magic is made...and the front verandah which has become a succulent nursery.

ell i o t t MY DEAR by Sarah & Hamish Elliott The ever evolving duo Sarah and Hamish Elliott create original artwork prints and accessories that are colourful, detailed and in a rather beautiful way, just a bit melancholy. Using a combination of traditional oil painting on linen, watercolours and drawing, their label Elliott My Dear manages to evoke a lovely nostalgic feeling, and a gentleness which we love.

What does your work / studio space look like? With two homeschool kids and a baby I work when and where I can! We have a lovely old 1800’s dinning table that is huge and beautiful; my work is small so I love it when my young creatives make paintings on there too! I like to live with my paintings for a while and have them around me before they go out into the world...
8-bitt y by Luke Morgan In terms of product design, 2013 will be bold, bright and a little gory for 8-bitty creator Luke Morgan. A local graphic designer and artist, Luke grew up in the 80s and 90s with Stormtroopers, Battlecat, Ninja Turtles, Batman, Indiana Jones, Soundwave, Sub-zero and of course video games. Drawing on these well rounded influences, he designs and produces radical video game clothing which essentially chews up cool stuff from the 80s and 90s and spits them out as giant pixels onto t-shirts.

Tasmania’s best kept secret? The sandstone formations at the northern of the Dennison Beach on the east coast- they have amazed me since I was a kid. Worth the walk. On a completely different note Lou’s amazing merchandising at her Oyster & Pearl shop makes a visit there truly something special. She has created an inspirational space – it’s like a secret world of its own.
B I R DY & ME by Kelly Smith Kelly Smith is the incredible illustrator behind the Birdy & Me label. With a seriously impressive list of clients (Vogue, H&M, L’avion) Kelly focuses on fashion illustration and portraiture and also produces limited edition prints and artworks that are whimsical, beautiful and inspiring all at once.

Her cleverly crafted jewellery designs, sold under the Little Lari label, have a lovely freedom to them, and use a fun and refreshingly unexpected pairing of components. Our favourites are her cute as a button noughts and crosses earrings and dainty silver freeform brooches, they make perfect presents too, we might add.

U N IO by Anne Langman
Anne Langman spent five years immersed in the gemstone filled alleyways of the local markets in Cairo, Egypt. She has poured this experience into her vibrant and bold collection of jewels, which she exhibits under her UNIO label. An unexpected contrasting of various components means that Anne’s designs are always fresh and innovative. Colourful Brazilian Palm nuts, chunky gemstones, pearls and sterling silver all come together in a spot on and extremely distinctive fashion. felucca@ozemail.com.au unio-jewellery.com

L ITT L E SNOR I NG by Edwina Morris Possibly the cutest wares we’ve ever come across, Little Snoring products turn us all into panda loving, simpering sillies. While her homewares and clothing are super fun and gorgeously made, it is her tiny pocket pandas and endearingly snooty little French Poodles that really hit a nerve. Edwina designs all her products with a good dose of whimsy and a fearless approach to colour.

Favourite Tasmanian designer / maker + why? Tasmania has so many fantastic designers and makers; I had to really think about this one. Some of them I respect for the products, some of them I admire for their intentions, and many others are gorgeous, amazing people! I would have to say Pixe Link would be favourite. I have several of her garments in my wardrobe, she is a wonderful lady with bravery and passion to support other makers and designers in Tasmania by opening her own store, Spacebar Gallery, and she is a self taught designer, business woman and general wonder-lady!
MEL * HI L L S WILD ART by Mel Hills Mel Hills is artistic…and scientific. This interesting (and we think complimentary) combo makes for an even more interesting style of work. Mel specialises in watercolour landscapes, wildlife art and scientific illustration. She makes a beautiful range of cards and limited edition prints, depicting native animals and landscapes. Her illustrations are precise (of course!) and her selection of animals/landscapes inspired and free spirited. hills.mel@gmail.com melhillswildart.com.au

O N Ce UPON A TI M E ... by Lili Foster Lili Foster is a crafter based on the North West Coast who started her business “Once upon a time…” after many years spent playing with her great grandmothers felt patterns. These days Lili’s fondness for felt has produced a lovely herd of quirky little woodland softies that each come complete with their own story. As if they’re not adorable enough, softie fanatics can rejoice, Lili has incorporated her felted friends into a collection of necklaces, so they can be worn as well as loved! onceupona.timecraft@gmail.com onceuponatimeforyou.etsy.com

S P OO N S A VV Y by Angela Lowe Angela Lowe is an op shopping, tip foraging, secondhand scouring, radically resourceful, spoon loving lady. Under her Spoon Savvy label she produces an enchanting and hugely popular collection of jewellery and more recently home wares, made from cutlery (spoons in particular!) She delights in the reinvention of the object and its function, we delight in the fact that her jewels are super cool, eco – friendly and resurrected from discarded cutlery! spoonsavvy@hotmail.com spoonsavvy.com
What does your work / studio space look like? My workshop was lost to the fires that swept through Murdunna in January this year. I didn’t realize how much cutlery I had collected over the years until I saw it in piles amongst the remains and the ashes. I am now reinventing my creative space in a big 40 foot shipping container. My vision for this space is chic workshop and design studio with jewelers bench and lots of beautiful old and new tools, surrounded by inspiring objects and treasures. I think the operative word here is ‘big’ – something big has happened, we’re taking that, thinking big and rising up.

What does your work / studio space look like? Honestly? My work space is usually the kitchen bench! True story. I have a table all set up in the spare bedroom but because it's not a room I spend a lot of time and so working in there feels weird... So, I migrated out into the next room–the kitchen! Our kitchen is at the back of the house looking out over our garden so the light is beautiful and perfect for taking and styling images for the online side of things. It's also become a place where I can steal small snippets of time to work when I need to throughout the day without my little helper! (Though I have to say he has become very fond of playing shop, stamping business cards and tagging stock!) At market time I seem to occupy every usable surface between the kitchen and the lounge room... Ask my husband an he'll tell you that I'm like that all year round! But then like magic it all somehow fits into the back of our car!

the who, the what & the why . . the market is a boutique art + design event, showcasing independent Tasmanian designers, makers and producers. It is held six times a year in the intriguing Masonic Temple, Hobart. Since its inception in 2009, it has become widely known for its exciting line up of exclusively local labels, along with its firm focus on authenticity and craftsmanship. With an impressive collection of exhibitors from a wide range of disciplines, visitors to the market can expect to see established fashion illustrators sitting alongside small scale producers of bespoke ceramics. A very particular approach to stallholder selection ensures that while exhibitors are vastly different in almost every way, they all have a common thread; creative talent, a demonstrated integrity in their business ethos and original thought in their design process.
the market is carefully curated by Shannon Robertson & Holly Webber, who are committed in their mission to unearthing and showing off Tasmania’s veritable web of undiscovered talent, world-class products and the intriguing stories and inspiration behind the commercial reality of small scale designers and makers. Alongside co-curating the market, Holly & Shannon both run successful small businesses of their own and bring to the market their skills in graphic design, journalism, advertising, creative writing and marketing. This helps them to provide exhibitors with a platform, valuable exposure and a reach for their products that extends beyond market day.
Shannon Robertson
Shannon Robertson is the whimsical designer behind the fashion accessories label, Whatever Heather. Whatever Heather is created from her attic studio in Battery Point, which is overflowing with all manner of Shannon type inspiration...oversized flowers, swans, chandeliers, battered crowns, and sometimes (if he fancies) her imperious but seriously beloved ginger cat Raspberry can be found perched on her desk, playing muse.
