Public Policy Advocacy Highlights OUR COVID-19 POLICY & LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES 1.
Immediate cash assistance from all levels of government to businesses impacted and or interrupted by the residual effects of the COVID-19 pandemic;
2.
No additional financial obligations on businesses impacted and or interrupted by the residual effects of the COVID-19 pandemic;
3.
An adequate level of funding for public health, healthcare officials, and first responders to contain the COVID-19 pandemic and ensure appropriate treatment and testing.
OUR PRIORITIES IN ACTION
•
Successfully united, informed and advocated for our business community by opposing the Los Angeles City Council’s recently proposed legislation that would have crippled businesses. Our efforts led to: o Mayor Garcetti issued an Emergency Order temporarily replacing and superseding the L.A. City Council’s Supplementary Paid Sick Leave Ordinance. The provision incorporates vital amendments and exemptions that the chamber advocated for, and as the Mayor commented are meant to strike a necessary balance of the interests of both the health and safety of employees, and the economic stability of employers o City Council Postponed Vote on the Recall of Laid Off Workers and Citywide Worker Retention Ordinances and ordered a report on the impact of businesses. Our efforts included: o Chamber conducted individual outreach to City Councilmembers and the Mayor through direct calls and emails by President & CEO to express our concerns. o Mobilized members to send 650 letters through an Action Alert to all City Councilmembers and the Mayor.
•
Actively mobilizing, informing and advocating for our business community by opposing the Right of Recall and Worker Retention provisions in the recently proposed Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors’ “Protecting Workers Rights” motion that if passed would cripple businesses in unincorporated Los Angeles County.
•
Discussed relief and recovery legislation with Representative Adam Schiff and Assembly Member Laura Friedman.
•
Joined forces with Save Small Business Coalition, a collaboration of over 80 chambers of commerce and associations that advocate for businesses throughout the country. Through federal and state intervention, our first call to action is to help resolve the wide-spread issue of the denial of Business Interruption Insurance claims. o By urging the State Legislature to draft emergency legislation requiring insurance companies to pay claims for Business Interruption under the current circumstances. o By urging Congress to draft emergency legislation to create a federally funded backstop to cover business continuity expenses.

A
new decade has arrived and with it a new vision for Hollywood. With film and tech companies flocking to our community, there's never been a more exciting time to live in Tinseltown.
While we champion and celebrate new business and development coming to Hollywood, we also make it a priority at the Chamber to preserve and elevate historic landmarks. Landmarks like the world-renowned Walk of Fame. That's why the Chamber is thrilled to be working with Councilmember Mitch O'Farrell's HEART of Hollywood initiative on an update to the Hollywood Boulevard streetscape. The recently released masterplan, created by design firm Gensler, seeks to preserve the stars on Hollywood Boulevard as well as reactivate the area by lengthening sidewalks and adding outdoor plazas for dining, concerts, and special events. The Chamber is proud to support this plan and reinvigorate the Hollywood experience for locals and tourists alike. But reinvigorating the Hollywood experience also means supporting the numerous non-profit organizations who provide needed advocacy and social service to our community. Each month, the Chamber volunteers with a local non-profit for a Day of Service as a way to engage and give back to Hollywood. Recently, we volunteered with the Assistance League and Project Angel Food. As a fellow supporter and advocate for Hollywood, I hope you'll join the Chamber in supporting these local groups that seek to strengthen our community as we shape Hollywood's future.

and its brand as a unique, one-of-a-kind, world-famous destination. He is working to enhance Hollywood’s reputation as a world-class neighborhood in which to live, do business, and visit. He promotes it as an economic driver for the rest of L.A., as the entertainment capital of the world, and as a worldwide destination for tourists.
Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell shared the latest details on his HEART of Hollywood initiative, updates on housing and programs for those experiencing homelessness, and insights on neighborhood improvements. O’Farrell has built a solid reputation as a councilmember who understands the importance of maintaining a healthy business climate. He led the fight to ensure that the City Council considered business impacts before voting to raise the minimum wage. He was the first councilmember to go on the record opposing Measure S, the Neighborhood Integrity Initiative that would have slapped a building moratorium on Los Angeles. He continues working to create opportunities for more affordable housing, and also championed reforms to help small, neighborhood businesses that drive the local economy. He is also leading the effort to get a new community plan adopted for Hollywood. He understands the importance of Hollywood, its history,

A MODERN SIGN ORDINANCE SUITED FOR HOLLYWOOD!
Los Angeles Skyline from Hollywood. Photo courtesy of The Afriat Consulting Group.
A
hub for the City of Los Angeles, and for the entertainment and advertising industries nationwide, Hollywood’s businesses and residents have their own unique needs and policy priorities. That’s why the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce recently penned a letter of support for Los Angeles’ proposed sign ordinance. While the modernized sign ordinance would not change the Hollywood Sign District, it will update the City’s antiquated sign policy, create a new source of much needed funding for public improvements and community benefits and give communities a say in the future of their neighborhoods. Existing regulations on outdoor advertising and signage do not reflect the needs of businesses in and neighborhoods like Hollywood. The proposed sign ordinance will establish a path for a modernized sign policy to remedy this, by permitting the takedown of antiquated or outdated signs and replacing them with new ones, including the option to put up digital signage. Further, it would require that more signage comes down than goes up, so that there will be a significant decrease in signs. Additionally, any new or enhanced sign would be subject to a thorough public approval process prior to installation or takedown - ensuring we have the tools to improve Hollywood’s, and Los Angeles’, visual landscape and maintain local control every step of the way. Equally important, this ordinance will create a new source of substantial funding for community benefits and city services that is expected to contribute millions of dollars each year. This revenue could fund Hollywood’s and our surrounding communities’ critical priorities including homelessness, infrastructure, parks and recreation and more and would be tailored by and for our specific neighborhoods, so investments go where they are needed most. We must adopt policies that ensure all communities have the option and opportunity to benefit, and an update to our citywide sign ordinance is no different. The proposed ordinance has gone through numerous public hearings bringing businesses, residents, civic leaders and organizations together throughout Los Angeles in support of the modern policy. The Hollywood Chamber is proud to join this coalition to urge the City to move this ordinance forward now. Learn more about a modernized sign ordinance at www.signsofprogressla.com

The Walk of Fame itself is an icon with its many gems stretching from the TCL Chinese Theatre on its west end to the Hollywood Pantages Theatre on its east end. But in between, there are also many treasures of a smaller scale from the Pig ‘N Whistle and Musso & Frank Grill, to the west, to the LACE and WuHo galleries further east. These places come together to form an integrated fabric that defines Hollywood Boulevard. Hollywood is also a diverse and dynamic neighborhood. With new housing and additional residents, there is a growing demand for neighborhood retail and open space that serves families and people of all ages and abilities, in addition to the traditional tourist-serving businesses. SPRING 2020 ADVOCATE
To create a street for everyone, the Hollywood Walk of Fame Concept Plan focuses on pedestrians, and the experience of everyone who uses the sidewalk. The backbone of the pedestrian experience today is the Walk of Fame, which extends along Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street as a linear spine. Enhancing that experience, a new expanded sidewalk allows for new types of experiences and engagement including places to eat, play, watch, perform and rest. Flexible event plazas, located along the Boulevard adjacent to major landmarks and entertainment venues provide space for larger-scale events and activities. Walking down the future Hollywood Boulevard, visitors and residents find spaces which are both compelling and beautiful, and which present the opportunity for active and passive engagement.
COVER STORY
HOLLYWOOD CHAMBER
Expanded Sidewalk Along Hollywood Boulevard between Argyle Avenue and La Brea Avenue, the Concept Plan envisions expanding the existing sidewalk from fifteen up to twenty-five feet. The expanded sidewalk would provide additional space for pedestrians, amenities, street furnishings, and landscaping. Outdoor dining could be provided without interfering with the Walk of Fame. Additional street trees will be planted to provide shade and a natural respite in the urbanized environment of Hollywood. Vendors and street performers may be relocated from directly atop the Walk of Fame and additional, new amenities could be introduced along the Boulevard. Flexible Event Plazas Additional space for people could be provided by the creation of flexible event plazas. Each event plaza would be demarcated with removable bollards, allowing the street to be closed to vehicular traffic during events. The plazas are intended to be flexible spaces that could accommodate various programming opportunities, such as concerts, premieres, broadcasts, street festivals, community events and temporary exhibitions, all of which contribute to an active and lively streetscape. As envisioned in the Concept Plan, the plazas would occur at strategic intervals along the Boulevard, colocated with existing landmarks, historical buildings, and theaters or other activity nodes.

Design Principles for the Walk of Fame Masterplan 1. Create a place that celebrates the unique identity of Hollywood.
4. Catalyze economic development and investment.
2. Establish a forward-looking framework to address present-day challenges and anticipate future needs.
5. Provide spaces and amenities that accommodate a range of activities.
3. Provide an exemplary experience for pedestrians, bicyclists and transit riders, and enhance safety for all.
6. Protect and preserve valuable historic resources.

he dictionary defines harmony as “a combination of musical sounds considered to be pleasing.” The music world could define harmony as “The Lettermen”. For more than 50 years, The Lettermen-- Donovan Tea, Bobby Poynton and Rob Gulack, each of whom are entertainers in their own right—have kept the meaning of harmony alive with their soft, romantic, harmonic blend of music which is as popular with their fans today as it was in 1961 when they recorded their first hit, “The Way You Look Tonight”. L’Antica Pizzeria Da Michele World-renowned Italian Neapolitan pizzeria L’Antica Pizzeria Da Michele arrived in Los Angeles spring 2019. The first U.S. location of the historic pizzeria featured in the film Eat Pray Love, L’Antica Pizzeria Da Michele is located in the space which once held Hollywood’s beloved Café Des Artistes. L’Antica Pizzeria Da Michele serves traditional Neapolitan pizza, using the same recipes and importing the same ingredients used at its origin restaurant. Head Pizzaiolo Michele Rubini, who trained in Napoli, will serve the concept’s two classic pizzas, Marinara and Margherita, with plans to expand the menu with the location’s own unique twist in the future.
The Greek Theatre The historic Greek Theatre, one of the nation’s most beloved and widely recognized outdoor entertainment venues, is among the most cherished public sites in Los Angeles. Owned by the City of Los Angeles, The Greek Theatre is managed, operated and booked by SMG. The Greek’s April-to-October concert calendar attracts over 350,000 guests to 70-plus events annually. Beetle House L.A. The Beetle House is a year round celebration of Halloween with an artistic and thematic atmosphere inspired by horror culture, magic, and the artistic, literary and cinematic works of Tim Burton, Alfred Hitchcock, Bram Stoker, Washington Irving, Edgar Allen Poe and many more. In short, we are kind of like an adult Halloween party with a Burtonesque feel, curated by Alfred Hitchcock, with a 90s goth band on stage and everyone is wearing weird costumes. We are a safe place where every goth, punk, freak, weirdo, artist, and visitor is welcomed and celebrated. Beetle House was created by Zach Neil and opened as a pop up restaurant in New York City in April of 2016. Due to its demand and success after three years, Beetle House become permanent in New York City. Hollywood California opened in May of 2017 and has now celebrated two years and moved from its pop up location to a permanent home at 1714 North Las Palomas Avenue. The New York location is a very small intimate experience suited for up to 45 people. Los Angeles is a large spectacle suited for 500 people. Both locations are very different experiences while folding true to the same concept and offering guests a truly unique and macabre experience.
