REBALANCING THE SCALES
The terrible earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria has resulted in horrendous loss of life. As I write it is reported that perhaps 40,000 people have died. We struggle to come to terms with such numbers of people just wiped out so quickly. Many will recall how traumatic it was to see the Twin Towers collapse on 9/11 with thousands killed. That was an act of terrorism whereas this was a natural disaster so perhaps our reactions are different. In some ways the scale of what’s happened doesn’t really register with us fully. My brother-in-law down in Essex has recently been involved in a motorbike accident and is now in hospital badly injured. I know it’s happened, I’m worried about him (and seriously praying for him), but because I’m not there and don’t have all the information about how he’s doing, I can’t really get the scale or seriousness of what has happened, and what trauma he has been through.
Another example is how we hear about people in poverty, struggling to pay their gas bills, or on the other hand, energy companies making £billions of profit - and we can’t really work out the scale of it all unless we ourselves experience the effect of these things.
How do we ‘rebalance the scales’ so that we can effectively measure what’s happening in the world around us? I don’t think there’s an easy answer to this but I do think it comes down to a word: empathy. Empathy is about putting yourself in the other person’s shoes. We may not be naturally empathetic but the first step in nurturing empathy is to take your focus away from the self.
As St. Paul said, “each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Only when we can begin to grasp the scale of trauma, or the reality behind the figures, headlines or pictures, will we be moved to get involved with changing the world for good. The amazing financial response to the earthquake appeal and the way we are standing with Ukraine are just two shoots of green hope among the rubble. We pray for more.

HOLMESFIELD FLOWER ARRANGING CLUB: POT-ET-FLEUR
The literal translation of pot-et-fleur is pot and flowers. When creating this design, we arrange a small collection of plants around the edge of a pot and incorporate a vessel to hold flowers, so that the plants stay the same and the flowers enhance and change the appearance of the arrangement as they are changed.
Plants could be either planted in compost in the bowl or left in their pots to be planted in the garden later.
Suggested plants to use: Create a herb garden for the kitchen!
Primula, spring bulbs or plants of your choice.
Equipment needed: A ceramic pot or a lined basket.
Container for flowers: Jam jar; empty tin; plastic container; oasis; pin holder; chicken wire. All depends on how you want to display your flowers.
Flowers: You only need a few bold flowers to complement the display and also perhaps a few decorative twigs for height and some greenery, pebbles, raffia or moss to cover any ‘mechanics’.
Packing: You may need something to raise the plants or to nestle plant pots into if you’re not planting them in compost, such as screwed up paper; more chicken wire; pebbles or stones.
Meeting on Wednesday 15th March at 7.30pm in Holmesfield Village Hall, Vicarage Close, Holmesfield, Dronfield. S18 7WZ. Visitors Welcome - Pay on the Door £6.00. For further details of the club, please contact Diane Sheldon on 0771 8925514 or email: Diane.sheldon1@btinternet.com

We are delighted to tell you all that following our marketing campaign across the globe, we have found a fantastic new trustee and volunteer to join our small team. We are delighted to welcome Kim Chaplain to the team. Kim will join us as a trustee to the charity and has a wealth of experience in this area having been a trustee for other charities in the Derbyshire region. Welcome Kim!
The Holmesfield Markets have got quite a following now in terms of stall holders and we are happy to tell you that the 15th April market is a complete sell out. We will be introducing some new stall holders as well as bringing back the regulars.
As you all know the market runs from 10am to 2pm so please do come and convene with your neighbours, stock up on craft products, food – delicious gluten free pies from the Angel, Peak District reared beef from Moorland Meat, or scrumptious hot bacon or sausage sandwiches from Moss Valley, not to mention our regulars in the drinks department – Loxley Gin and Woodthorpe Cider to name but a few. Kirsty will be there with the bread stall, and Andrea with her amazing cakes and much much more. Or just pop by for a cuppa as everyone is welcome!
This month we are delighted to tell you that the Holmesfield Local market will be funding another First Aid course which will be FREE to adults from the community. If you attend this course, you will be trained how to use the defibrillator as well as basic first aid. You will receive a certificate and a free first aid manual. HOLMESFIELD VILLAGE SOCIETY
Hi Everyone
I hope this issue of the Parish Magazine finds you all well and surviving the Holmesfield winter! The good news is that we are now half way through winter and there are definite signs of Spring coming!
It’s time for planning the year ahead and that’s exactly what the Holmesfield Village Society committee have been doing at our recent meetings. We have a busy calendar of events in our lovely village for 2023.
The King’s Coronation this coming May is an extra special opportunity for a village event. We hope to add a big celebration party for the Coronation into our usual village calendar. More details will follow, and so for now, please save the date of THE CORONATION BIG LUNCH on Sunday 7th May.
Our annual favourites are already pencilled into the calendar such as Village Week – a full week of family activity in July, The Pumpkin Trail in October, Poppies for Remembrance Sunday in November, and Santa’s Grotto, the Christmas Tree and Carols in December.
Following the great comments and really positive feedback we have had about the ‘Hotel Transylvania’ film afternoon for children in November; we hope to hold more movie events at the Village Hall. Ideally these could take place more regularly, perhaps with different themes throughout the year. We have some ideas and would love to hear your suggestions for the movies that you would like to see, so please give us some feedback! We promised more information about our Photographic Competition which was mentioned in the January newsletter, and is open for entries now. We invite you to send in your best ‘winter photograph of Holmesfield’. The photo judged to be the best will be made into a card for sale for Christmas 2023. We aren’t setting any limitations for the image, as our card can be made to suit the perfect photograph. Whether it be portrait, landscape or panoramic whatever the scene demands; we can accept your entry as long as it is high resolution enough to print. Please send your image to holmesfieldvillage@gmail.com before March 31st 2023. The photos will be put to a ‘peoples vote’ in April to find the winner. Updates and competition terms and conditions will be available on our Facebook page and there will be a prize for the winner as well the card being printed to sell locally for Christmas and raise funds for village events and projects.

HOLMESFIELD VILLAGE SOCIETY
New for this year will be a Smiling Sunflower competition. This competition for children will open in April and The Village Society will provide the seeds so that everyone will be growing the same variety. The objective is to grow the biggest flowerhead and the winner will receive a prize! Watch this space to find out where and when to get your free seeds.
We really hope you will get involved in these competitions and contribute your own ideas for events, competitions and activities – so please let us know!
If you have any requests, or ideas or you’d simply like to be more involved, please let us know either directly or via the email address holmesfieldvillage@gmail.com We look forward to hearing from you.
The Holmesfield Village Society’s goal is to build upon our great community spirit - that’s our aim across everything we do and have some fun and friendship along the way.
In the meantime, keep on looking forward to Spring – it really is just around the corner! Big Love – Helen, Alison, Elaine and Nick from The Holmesfield Village Society.

HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION
The Gardening Association held its Annual General Meeting in February to pass the minutes of last year’s meeting, examine the accounts and plan visits and meetings for the coming year. All the committee members have done an excellent job; the finances were approved as our new treasurer – Chris Blanksby – gave us an excellent and comprehensive report, and for the time being we will continue to pay on the door and continue the raffle with our very own Hazel and Sylvia (who are always grateful for donated raffle prizes). Next year’s events have been planned by our Events and Social Organiser, Hilary Olsen, who has worked hard to achieve a full programme.
The Annual Show unfortunately showed a loss because of a fall in entries – most probably caused by the very hot weather.
Several evening Garden Visits have been organised in the local area this summer, some in the National Open Gardens Scheme and others not. These will be advertised in the Parish Newsletter as usual; one every month until next January as well as evening talks at Holmesfield Village Hall on the remaining Wednesday evenings. Our next evening talk will be on Wednesday 1st March and will be given by friends of Sheffield Botanical Gardens on the subject of ‘South African Plants in the Wild and the New South African plants in the Botanical Gardens’. This will be followed on Wednesday April 5th by a very comprehensive talk by Camilla Anderson on ’Gardens of the Arts and Crafts Movement and Edwardian gardens with a focus on the Gardens of Harold Peto’. Visitors are welcome to join us for the talk on this very important era in British gardening history. A modest charge of £2.00 is made for members and visitors alike.
In May we commence our evening visits to local gardens and the first will be to Horsley Gate Hall with details to be published nearer the date.
The annual coach trip will be to Wollaton Old Hall on Wednesday 21st June. This is a well known garden that has been featured on Gardeners World. The price of the coach is £15.00 and entrance to the Hall is £8.00.
As ever, all enquires should be to our garden visits and social organiser, Hilary Olsen, on 0114 2890927. Frances Webb

January crime figures:
Criminal damage: 1, vehicle crime: 1, violence against the person: 3, burglary: 2, Total: 7.
During January, you have told us about several people trying to sell items door to door across our area. It’s important to consider when visitors/ salespersons attend your property unannounced. It’s advisable to consider the following information;
• If you are not expecting visitors, it’s okay not to answer the door
• Don’t let strangers into your home
• Some bogus callers say they need your help. They may say they need things like:
- To use your phone.
- To wash their hands.
- A drink of water.
- To find a lost ball or pet
• Water company staff don’t need to go inside your home to test water pressure or fix a leak.
• Check their identity carefully before letting them in. They don’t mind waiting.
• They may say that they are from a gas, water, or electric company. When their staff visit you can set up a password. They will say the password, so you know they are real. This doesn’t cost money
• Never let strangers asking for help into your home.
• They may tell you that urgent work needs to be done on your home. Never agree to have any work done by someone who knocks on your door. Further information can be found in a leaflet on Derbyshire County Council’s website: www.derbyshire.gov.uk/site-elements/documents/pdf/social-health/adultcare-and-wellbeing/disability-support/learning-disabilities/keeping-safe/ visitors-to-your-home.pdf
You can also request signage from Derbyshire County Council and Derbyshire Police via Dronfield SNT Team. These signs and other crime prevention items will be available at some of our events.

SPEEDING CHECKS - PENNY ACRES SCHOOL
At the end of January, Dronfield SNT Team were fortunate to spend an afternoon at Holmesfield Penny Acres School with the children who help remind road users about their driving behaviours and checking vehicles’ speeds as they travelled past. Some students spoke to speeding motorists with officers, about how speeding past the school impacts them and their friends. We look forward to repeating the sessions in the near future.
Dronfield SNT are currently supporting and working with other agencies with concerns relating to the speeding traffic outside the school in the following ways; Holmesfield Speedwatch Group run sessions in the location and other places around Holmesfield. If anyone would like to join this group please get in touch with Phil Reaney on 0114 289 1167 to find out more.
The Derbyshire Police enforcement van attends the location issuing fines for people caught speeding.
PC Matthews from Dronfield Safer Neighbourhood Team, along with Road Policing colleagues and other Derbyshire Police Officers attend the location monitoring speed and taking appropriate action.
ENERGY BILL SCAM TEXTS
Action Fraud has received hundreds of crime reports relating to fake text messages purporting to be from the UK government. The texts state that the recipient is “owed” or “eligible” for an energy bill discount as part of the Energy Bill Support Scheme. The links in the emails lead to genuine-looking websites that are designed to steal your personal and financial information.
How to protect yourself: Energy Bill Discount : £400 off energy bills for households in Great Britain from October 2022. You do not need to apply for the scheme and you will not be asked for your bank details.
Spotted a suspicious text message? Forward it to 7726 (it’s free of charge). If you forward a text to 7726, your provider can investigate the origin of the text and arrange to block or ban the sender, if it’s found to be malicious.

THEFTS OF CATALYTIC CONVERTER S
The high prices for precious metals is resulting in increasing thefts of catalytic converters (CATs) which have been fitted in the exhaust of the majority of petrol cars manufactured since 1992 and, by chemical reaction, substantially reduce harmful pollutants from the exhaust.
Thieves simply cut the catalytic converter from the exhaust pipe of a parked car and sell them on to scrap metal dealers.
Taller vehicles such as 4x4s are vulnerable as the converters are more accessible and because they tend to have larger engines, they contain more of the precious metals too.
Reduce The Risk
• Garage your car whenever possible
• Park in well-lit busy areas
• Be aware of people looking under cars
• If the car is high risk consider marking the metal shell of the converter with a unique mark, so that if it is removed by thieves it will be easier to trace back to your vehicle
• Fit a catalytic converter clamp or security cage

JANUARY 2023 WEATHER
In my mind, January is memorable for wind. We had a period of several days of strong wind at the beginning of the month and then a similar period at the end of the month. On the very last day the wind blew all day and reached a maximum on my anemometer of 48 mph. The average for the day was 23 mph and indeed the average for the whole month was 10 mph. All this wind made it feel rather cold even though the temperature was average for January with a mean temperature of 4.1°C. The warmest day was the 10th when the temperature reached 11.2°C and the coldest was the 17th when the temperature fell to -4.2°C. As well as being windy, January was also rather wet with 94mm falling, about 40% more than normal.
Houses also feel the cold when the wind blows and our central heating was struggling at times in January. We are all rather conscious of the cost of our heating this year. If you have a ‘smart meter’ you can see the number of kilowatt hours (kWhs) – and the cost – rising through the day. The ‘W’ in kWhs is the unit of power that is named after James Watt, the Scottish Engineer. Watt started his working life by making astronomical instruments for Glasgow University before starting a business making musical instruments and toys. Subsequently, he became interested in steam engines and he obtained patents on them. He married his cousin Peggy but sadly she died after bearing five children. At about this time, the business that Watt had started to exploit his steam engine patents went bankrupt and Watt sank into depression. However, a wealthy engineer call Matthew Boulton in Birmingham offered to finance his work on the steam engine, if Watt would move down to Birmingham. This partnership continued for most of the rest of Watt’s life. Watt and Boulton became members of the Lunar Society of men with wide interests in science, philosophy, the arts and engineering. The society included men such as Josiah Wedgwood, Joseph Priestly and Erasmus Darwin (the grandfather of Charles Darwin) and as a group it is argued that they began the industrial age that has shaped all of our lives. They were all born around 1730.
I apologise for my diversion into James Watt and the Lunar Men. However, it is true that James Watt was one of the small group who discovered the composition of water in terms of Oxygen, Hydrogen and water vapour. Weather forecasting of course depends upon an understanding of water, whether it be falling as rain, producing clouds or evaporating from the oceans.

FRIENDS OF GILLFIELD WOOD
Practical Conservation Morning. Sunday 12th March, 10.00am.
These are held monthly all year, either at weekends or midweek, with dates advertised on the website. Members can join the mailing list by contacting the Secretary at fogwsecretary@gmail.com.
Sessions are open to anyone who would like to join in. Everyone needs to provide their own gloves along with suitable clothes and footwear. Typical activities are coppicing, fencing and walling, tree and undergrowth management, path repair and drain clearance and all sorts of miscellaneous jobs.
We meet either at the Baslow Road bus terminus, the Scout Hut on Aldam Road, Totley or at the end of Totley Hall Lane. The work mornings are advertised on posters around Totley, in the local press and nearer the date are emailed out. Due to Covid precautions there are no drinks or biscuits provided so we recommend you bring along your own refreshments.
