DRONFIELD POLICE SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM

February crime figures:

Criminal damage: 1, theft: 1, burglary: 1, Total: 3 (–3). Dronfield SNT team continue to attend and plan crime prevention and community engagement events. This is a great opportunity to come and talk to the team get information and crime prevention advice or book a crime prevention assessment of your home. This is where you can get additional information about home security and additional crime prevention information tailored to your home.

Dronfield SNT attended 3rd Holmesfield Cubs and Beavers in early March. They were keen to learn more about the police and also how the police work within the community to keep people safe. The young people were keen to explore the police car and some of the kit and equipment the team use.

There are definitely some budding Police people of the future!

Rural crime prevention – Dronfield SNT are working closely with Derbyshire

Police Rural Crime Team. The main focus of this work is currently around crime prevention. Dronfield SNT are keen to build further links within the rural community if the council know of any rural events we could attend to promote this ongoing work, please get in touch and let us know.

USE OF PUBLIC RIGHTS OF WAY

There have been a number of complaints over the misuse of footpaths in the Parish by cyclists and horse riders. The designation of each right of way is integral to who can use:

• Footpaths: for walking, running, mobility scooters or powered wheelchairs

• Bridleways: for walking, horse riding, bicycles, mobility scooters or powered wheelchairs

• Restricted byways: for any transport without a motor and mobility scooters or powered wheelchairs

• Byways open to all traffic: for any kind of transport, including cars (but they’re mainly used by walkers, cyclists and horse riders).

HATCH A PLAN FOR GROWTH THIS SPRING

My garden at present is an Easter scene. On the one hand a great branch of crab-apple tree lies stricken having been felled by the snow. It awaits me to come, saw it off and dispose of it. Something that once brought great fruitfulness is now dead. This reminds me of the Cross of Christ, the wood and nails of dying; something fallen and wounded – but not without promise... Shoots of new life still spring from this dead tree and all around it. A reminder of the resurrection. We’ve also been blessed by the regular visit of a pair of nuthatches to our nut feeder. I remarked to Sarah, “I wonder if we’re going to get some baby nuthatches soon?” The promise of a new life?

The nuthatches have become regular visitors ever since we moved the other bird feeder, giving the nuthatches space to feed uninterrupted. It made me think, that often we only see new life and new growth when we actually put a bit of work in to create the right conditions for that growth to happen. Many of us would like to see good qualities growing and flourishing in our lives, things like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

This list of qualities comes from the Bible, from St. Paul’s letter to the church in Galatia (part of modern day Turkey) and they are called the ‘fruits of the Holy Spirit’. These things and this Spirit can come to anyone and they are certainly not restricted to church folk. But there are things we can do, postures we can adopt, that make it more likely that these things will grow in our lives. When we put the work in, create the right conditions, till the soil for those things to grow. Why not begin by coming to church this Easter Sunday or by developing a daily pattern of quietly asking for God to send his Spirit upon you when out walking or in a quiet moment at home? And there might also be things we need to move out of our lives (like the bird feeder I moved) in order to see growth in goodness. St. Paul mentions a few such things a little earlier in Galatians chapter five, things like jealousy, anger, quarrels, envy, and er... drunkenness, carousing...

On that note, have a very Happy Easter and may you be blessed with a fruitful Spring!

HOLMESFIELD FLOWER ARRANGING CLUB: ‘SEASONAL FLORAL WREATHS & RINGS’

We will be showing you how to make floral wreaths and rings this month, demonstrating how different types of materials can be used for the framework, from metal rings to natural twigs and vines. How foliage, flowers, fruit and even vegetables can be used in a variety of ways to create different designs.

For those of you who would like to create a wreath or ring after the demo please bring along the following:

Floral metal ring, Oasis foam ring or pliable plant material to create your ring, e.g. silver birch twigs, vine, pussy willow.

Sphagnum Moss (if using metal ring)

Reel Wire

Stub Wire

Some Foliage – Ivy and short stem foliage (enough to cover your base)

Small seasonal bulbs, flowers or both ,(dried or fresh) to decorate your ring. Any additional decorations you may wish to add.

HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION

On 1st March we had a very interesting talk by Trish Khon assisted by her husband Peter using photos of South African flowering plants in the wild with a geography lesson on the various climates in the east, south and west of South Africa linked to the plants growing in each area. We were then transported to the Botanical Gardens in Sheffield where Trish and Peter are prominent friends of the Botanical Gardens. Trish took us through the process of developing the South African garden with close-ups of the flowers planted.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 5th April at 7.30pm in Holmesfield Village Hall where Camilla Anderson will give us an illustrated talk on “Gardens of the Arts and Crafts Movement and Edwardian Gardens with a focus on the gardens of Harold Pete”. Guests are welcome to join us. There will be a charge of £4 for both members and guests towards the cost of our speaker.

Several evening garden visits have been arranged in the local area this summer. The first one is at Horsleygate Hall which is at the very bottom of Horsleygate Lane. Mr. & Mrs. Moor have kindly invited us to visit their lovely garden – light refreshments will be served and the cost is £4. The visit starts at 6.30pm on Wednesday May 3rd.

LADYBOWER RESERVOIR WALK

On Wednesday 26th April at 10.00am, Robin Greetham will lead a walk starting from the Yorkshire Bridge Inn at Bamford (S33 0AZ). We will go in convoy to park near the viaduct then walk around the dam. Coffee (optional) is available at Fairholmes kiosk. Lunch (optional) is at the Yorkshire Bridge. The walk is flat and approximately 5 miles long. There are no stiles and lifts are available to shorten the walk.

GLOW! : HOLMESFIELD YOUTH CLUB

I couldn’t write last month because I was away with some of our young people at YouthFest in Dronfield on a two-night sleepover and crazy shenanigans. A group of youth leaders from across the churches in the area host up to 50 young people for fun and to hear a bit about who Jesus is. Watch this space for details of next year’s event!

The leaders of Glow! are really proud of Chloe who went away to complete the Rotary Young Leaders Award in February. Here she is having given a presentation to Rotary Dronfield members earlier this month. RYLA will be looking to sponsor another young person from our area next year, so do let me know if your young person (aged 15+) is interested. We need newspapers and wool/yarn ends for crafts if you have any you’d like to donate? I’m happy to come and get them from you.

Extreme Wheels will be in the area on 3rd April 6.00-8.00pm in Sindelfingen Park, 6th April in Coal Aston Park, 13th April Coal Aston Park and Sindelfingen Park both 6.008.00pm. All activities are FREE and they’ll have the bigger equipment with them than they had with us indoors.

HOLMESFIELD VILLAGE SOCIETY

I hope this issue of the Parish Magazine finds you well. So the snow finally arrived and lots of you took some stunning photos of our gorgeous village. This of course means that the Holmesfield Village Society ‘Photo Competition’ is now underway. The aim is to find a suitable wintry scene for use as a Christmas card. It doesn’t have to be a snowy scene – however it must be a view of Holmesfield, the surrounding villages, or of our fabulous local wildlife. Just remember that we are looking to find a photograph suitable for a Christmas card. We can accept portrait, landscape or panoramic photos so long as it is high resolution enough to print. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact one of the Holmesfield Village Society team or send an email to holmesfieldvillage@ gmail.com before the closing date of Sunday 16th April. The photos will be put to a ‘peoples vote’ in April to find the winner. Updates and competition terms and conditions will be available on our Facebook page and there will be a prize for the winner. The card will be printed to sell locally for Christmas to raise funds for village events and projects.

Last month we announced our ‘Smiling Sunflower Competition’ for the kids in the village. Our seeds have now arrived which is great news. The Royal Horticultural Society recommends planting sunflowers indoors to give them a head start in early spring and then plant out in April/May. The Village Society are providing the seeds so that everyone will be growing the same variety. To get hold of your sunflower seeds simply email holmesfieldvillage@gmail.com or call Alison Taylor on 07725 705500. Your ‘Smiling Sunflowers’ will be judged later in the year. The biggest flowerhead will be the winner and will receive a prize!

Plans are also in progress for our celebration of the King’s Coronation in May. We are organising a big party for the Coronation in the Village Hall. Remember the fabulous afternoon we spent last year celebrating the Jubilee? Well imagine that but bigger and better! Most of you will know that we have planning permission for a Scout building so that 3rd Holmesfield Scouts can move back into the village. One of our fund raising ideas is a major raffle and we are looking for anyone associated with a company who could donate a larger prize for our BIG RAFFLE which we are holding in the summer, as well as smaller items.

MOBILE LIBRARY

Derbyshire County Council’s mobile library service operates on a 4-weekly cycle. The mobile library will be at 6 Park Rise, Holmesfield between 10.25am and 10.50am on Mondays 17th April and 15th May.

The staff look forward to welcoming you on board to browse the stock and access their services.

The mobile libraries have a lift if you use a wheelchair or have mobility problems.

HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB

As the start of another exciting season approaches, there has been a lot of activity down at the club. The new social area has been erected behind the original club house adding additional space and storage for players and fans. The project team led by Tony Brown have worked tirelessly over the off season completing a long list of jobs before it can be fully opened in May. Whilst net practice @S20 The Boundary has continued throughout winter; the HCC Ladies have had a successful off-season winning the inaugural Derbyshire Indoor Cricket League. Wins against both Eckington and Clowne on the finals day saw the ladies lift the first silverware of 2023 for The Vill. A fantastic success and thank you to all involved.

The coming season

The club is very excited about the coming season with yet further opportunities for all to participate. The club will be running three senior teams again in 2023, with our 1st, 2nd and midweek team competing at various standards. The club will again be entering the Derbyshire Development League which gives a number of opportunities for juniors and seniors who wish to participate in some competitive cricket across the summer.

League games start for the senior teams on Saturday 22rd April with the 1st XI travelling to Marehay and the 2nd XI hosting Stainsby Hall. It’s a 1.00pm start if you wish to come and support us. The following week sees the 1st XI at home against Nutbrook (12.30pm start) whilst the 2nd XI travels to South Wingfield. Sunday 30th April sees the first of the Ladies fixtures with a double header away at Clowne Town. The first match commences at 11.00am vs Clowne Town with the second game against Belper Amateurs at 1.00pm.

Junior Cricket

After the great success of last year, junior cricket will be available this season with both the All Stars Programme for 5 to 8 year-olds and the Dynamos Programme for 8 to 11 year-olds running on Friday evenings.

The programmes will run from 12th May through to 10th June. If you would like your child to attend, then please contact Jimmy Pearson (details below).

In addition to the two programmes we are running the following junior teams this year:

U9s soft ball (School year 4 – Wednesday and Friday nights)

U11s hard ball (School years 5 & 6 – Thursday nights)

U13s

3 x U15s

Please let us know if your child would like to join any of the teams. Coaching will start in April.

100 Club

Following the fantastic support we received last year from everybody we are looking to try and beat the membership total of 182.

FEBRUARY 2023 WEATHER

I mentioned last month that January had been rather windy, with a maximum gust of 48 mph. Well in the middle of February storm Otto passed through and this time a maximum gust of 50mph was recorded in Bradway. You may wonder why I am telling you what the wind was doing in Bradway. The reason for this is that I don’t know what the wind was doing in Holmesfield because I am actually on a cruise ship off the eastern coast of Australia, but I have a friend, Peter, in Bradway who has kindly sent me his weather figures.

In Bradway, February, was almost two degrees warmer than usual with a mean temperature of just over 6°C – the warmest day being the 18th at 12.4°C and the coldest the 6th at -1.3°C.

In addition to being warmer than usual, February was also very dry with 12mm being recorded, only 18% of what usually falls.

The hours of bright sunshine were also rather more than usual. Those of you who drive a car may well have been dazzled by the sun during February. The sun is low in the sky in the winter so that if there is not much cloud the sun can become a real problem. I believe that it was the low sun that caused the Duke of Edinburgh to be involved in an accident near Sandringham a few years ago.

The trusts were formed due to donations specifically meant to benefit village people and are not means tested.

ST. SWITHIN’S CHURCH

All are welcome to come to our Sunday services at 10.30am. The type of services varies each week - those with children might find the fourth Sunday family service suits them best, but everyone is welcome at all services.

HOLMESFIELD BYGONES

This month’s image from the lens of W. “Harry” Hewitt of Dronfield is of the 17th Century Fanshawe Gate Hall, one of the great halls of Holmesfield. The addition of human interest, no doubt intrigued at the large glass plate camera that Hewitt would have lugged from his home off Snape Hill in Dronfield, enhances the rustic charm of the image presented here.

After 700 years of being in the Fanshawe family, Basil Fanshawe died in 1944 and the Hall passed out of the hands of the family. After becoming Grade II Listed in October 1951 it was purchased by John & Cynthia Ramsden in 1959 who restored the house and gardens to great acclaim. After John Ramsden died in 2016 the Hall enjoys life under fresh custodianship.
