HOLMFIRTH ARTWEEK 2018
CHAIR’S WELCOME TO HOLMFIRTH ARTWEEK 2018
We are very pleased to welcome you to the 2018 Holmfirth Artweek Exhibition. This year has seen some changes in how we are organised behind the scenes. It has in part been due to the changes in General Data Protection Regulations, as well as trying to adhere to stricter protections for the public. We are a constituted group with a Chair, Secretary, etc. although we have always had a Treasurer to look after your money! It has created a certain amount of “paperwork” but at heart, we remain a team of committed volunteers: keen, willing and eager to try to put on a good exhibition and raise some money at the same time, for a cause that helps many, many people, who are often at their lowest ebb - Macmillan Cancer Support. We are trying out a few new things this year, as well as our main show and the Fringe exhibitions in the Holme Valley, we have ventured further afield and we would like to welcome some Fringe venues in the Colne Valley with studios, shops and galleries in Slaithwaite and Marsden joining in. Well worth the short drive over to see them. We are trying to cater to a younger audience too with some workshops for children between 6 and 12 years of age. Budding artists can be left in the capable hands of our associates from the Creative Arts Hub in Mirfield, leaving you to browse the artworks in peace for a couple of hours. There is a choice of artistic fields for them to have a go at (places can be booked on our website). Particular thanks go to Mark Milnes for organising and running these. Last year’s Featured Artist, Sarah Stoker, has been asked to select the Best Newcomer 2018 Prize. Sarah has supported Artweek for many years and did phenomenally well for us last year, selling her well known pottery, as well as paintings that are inspired
4
by her travels around the country. It feels fitting that someone who has built up such a devoted following, and brought us many sales over the years at Artweek, should help us to find potential new talent of the future. We hope to continue this in future years with our Featured Artists. It has been my privilege to be the first Chair(man) of the Artweek committee. There is a lot of work that goes into organising such an event, some of it can be tedious and doing the paperwork can seem like a never ending task, but we try to enjoy it too. So I would like to thank all the artists for supporting Artweek, all the visitors for coming and buying something but mostly I would like to thank my fellow Artweek and Macmillan committee members (and all their friends and family who come to help) without whom there could be no exhibition. Lynne Onyskiw Chair, Holmfirth Artweek Committee
ABOUT ARTWEEK
TREASURER’S WELCOME TO HOLMFIRTH ARTWEEK 2018
Welcome to Artweek 2018. We’ve got high hopes for this year’s event and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that we can maybe beat last years result, which took us all a little by surprise.
use of Holmfirth Upper Market Hall for the duration of Artweek. We’ve got several arts groups, including West Yorkshire Print Workshop, occupying this space and, as it’s just a short walk along the road, we’d highly recommend a visit.
Last year we managed to raise a fantastic £39,000 for Macmillan, which matches the previous highest amount raised in 2012. I don’t think any of us expected this - especially throughout the week of the event when visitor numbers seemed down and sales seemed slow.
This year has seen the introduction of major new legislation governing data protection, which most of you will already be well aware of because it impacts on virtually all aspects of our lives.
We also had a few issues which caused considerable stress for the organising team. The Market cash till finally deciding to pack in - with perfect timing on the evening before Artweek opened - causing us a bit of a headache to say the least! However, we got through it and the amount raised felt like a just reward for the stresses of the week. Last year’s event saw the introduction of the new smaller format free guide, which went down very well indeed and received much positive feedback. The guide is now used to promote Artweek in the weeks leading up to the event and is distributed as widely as possible throughout the region. Things are looking very promising this year and there has been a real buzz in the build up to the event. We’ve already broken one record, with the public artist places selling out within ten days of being opened. This has never happened so quickly before. There are also a high number of newcomers this year, so it will be interesting to see what fresh new talent is on show in the exhibition. There are also some substantial additions to the Fringe venues this year. Thanks to Kirklees Markets, we managed to secure
We’ve also extended the Artweek Fringe into the Colne Valley this year with venues in Marsden and Slaithwaite taking part for the first time. We’d encourage you to spend a day visiting them - all are great venues with plenty to see.
The new legislation has been introduced to offer you more protection and control over how your personal information is used in our ever more complicated world. To comply with this legislation, and to ensure we have your agreement to use your data, it is now essential that all future Artweek applications are conducted via our online process. It’s also now imperative that all exhibition and Fringe applicants, and all members of the Artweek Friends scheme, provide a valid contact email address. The organising team are all volunteers and a hell of a lot of work and time goes into organising Artweek, so please understand that we are very keen to make our tasks easier. Being able to contact you by email helps us immensely. Behind the scenes we’ve got a strong organisational team in place with a wide range of skills and experience and, above all, lots of enthusiasm. The last year or so has seen quite a few positive changes to Artweek and we will continue to make whatever changes we feel are needed to ensure its popularity and success keep moving forward. Enjoy your visit…. and don’t forget to make a purchase! Adrian Burnham, Artweek Treasurer

HOLMFIRTH ARTWEEK 2018
ROYAL ACKNOWLEDGEMENT FOR HOLMFIRTH ARTWEEK AND MACMILLAN COMMITTEE
Holmfirth Artweek and Holmfirth Macmillan Committee: Royal acknowledgement of our wonderful partnership
in recognition of the fantastic contribution that Artweek makes in promoting artists and supporting Macmillan Cancer Support.
Since the idea of a local art exhibition to provide a venue for local artists and students to display their work, and to raise money for the National Society for Cancer Relief (now Holmfirth Macmillan Cancer Support Committee), was first envisaged in 1966 Holmfirth Artweek has become one of the largest charitable art exhibitions in the country and an eagerly anticipated event in the Holmfirth Calendar. To date, Artweek has raised over £900,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support. None of this would be possible without the entirely voluntary efforts of the Artweek Committee and Macmillan Committee members and the volunteers who organize and steward Artweek.
Eric Lee Chair, Holmfirth Macmillan Cancer Support Committee
If you would like to know more about, and get involved with, the work of Holmfirth Macmillan Cancer Support Committee please contact me at: lee534@btinternet.com
In 2017 Holmfirth Macmillan Committee was the winner of the Macmillan National Committee Award. This year two members of the Committee were invited to attend a reception at Buckingham Palace to celebrate the work of Macmillan Cancer Support volunteers. At the reception His Royal Highness Prince Charles paid tribute to the volunteers and showed a particular interest in Holmfirth Artweek. Two of Artweek’s luminaries, the late Trevor Stubley and Darren Baker, have painted portraits of Her Majesty The Queen. I am hopeful that this year’s exhibition will receive further Royal support
OBITUARY TERRY SUMMERS
We were very sad to hear of the death, last October, of Terry Summers. 6
Along with his wife Ann, Terry exhibited his woodturning at Artweek for very many years and, until recently, was a long-term helper during the setup and taking down of the Exhibition. He also helped on the Market where his cheerful banter and humour made everyone smile - he will be very much missed.

HOLMFIRTH ARTWEEK 2018
JOANNE COOKE FEATURED ARTIST 2018
WHAT ARTISTIC TRAINING HAVE YOU HAD? After leaving school I studied BTec Art & Design at Thurrock Tech. in Essex and then went on to do a BA(Hons) Degree in 3D Design (wood, metal, ceramics & glass) at Manchester Met. Uni.
WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN INFLUENCES? Ideas for new work come from all sorts of places seeing a dog in the street, online or in a magazine, most of the time ideas just pop into my head that make me smile and then I have to make them!
10
WHAT KIND OF STUDIO DO YOU HAVE AND CAN YOU DESCRIBE A TYPICAL DAY FOR US? My husband David Cooke and I have just moved to a new workshop which David has fitted out himself with separate workspaces for each of us. He kindly let me have the only area with a window! I have to juggle a lot of family commitments so getting a full work day is a rare and beautiful thing. When it happens, it goes something like this: get the kettle on, have a coffee while checking my making lists, write down any new ideas, unwrap any work I have “on the go”, start any new commissions, have lunch and walk the dog, work on the pieces that are “on the go” and hopefully finish some before it’s time to clear up, wrap up the unfinished work and go home.
ABOUT ARTWEEK WHAT PROCESSES ARE INVOLVED IN THE PRODUCTION OF YOUR WORK AND WHERE DID YOU LEARN THESE? I sculpt everything individually by hand using a combination of slab and coil building techniques and then refine details with an array of hand tools. Work is dried then bisque fired in an electric kiln, painted with glazes and stains then fired again to a stoneware temperature of 1230 degrees. The techniques I use were learnt initially at college and Uni and later more handy tips were picked up from my husband. I have developed my own style over time based on that knowledge along with trial and error!
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE OF YOUR WORK IN THE ARTWEEK EXHIBITION? I plan to have a range of work for the show including my regular dog breed sculptures, more dogs on furniture in a similar style to my prize winning Chest of Paws from last year’s Artweek, and I’m hoping to explore the world of wild animals a little further after taking part in a Zoo themed exhibition last winter which took me out of my comfort zone of the domestic animal!
WHERE ELSE DO YOU SELL YOUR WORK? I predominantly work to commission making sculptures of clients’ pets but also exhibit my work regularly at several excellent galleries around the country including Byard Art in Cambridge and Rostra Gallery in Bath.
DO YOU HAVE ANY UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS/PLANS? Straight after Artweek I am taking part in the Summer Show at Byard Art, Cambridge, after that it will be full steam ahead making for Christmas!

WHAT ARTISTIC TRAINING DID YOU HAVE?
mediums. I also love illustration and old vintage etchings.
I have a Fashion Degree and have worked in interiors and I believe this has played its part in influencing my style.
WHAT KIND OF STUDIO DO YOU HAVE AND CAN YOU DESCRIBE A TYPICAL DAY FOR US?
However, I feel artistic training isn’t always necessary if you have a passion for art and a want to work hard, practice and are willing to learn through your mistakes.
WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN INFLUENCES? I love work with energy and movement. I am usually drawn to either human or animal forms and work that often has a narrative and is slightly abstract or impressionistic but with a figurative content. I am fascinated with use of texture and different
12
My studio is at the bottom of our garden. It is very small and I am growing out of it rapidly. It has got lots of storage, a sink, kettle, heater, radio and most importantly a lock!! It is usually very messy! I am usually short of time so work as quickly as I can. I don’t really have a typical day as every day is different depending on the upcoming exhibition or order or commission. Some days I get up very early and go out into my studio if I’m inspired. Other days I’m packing up work or delivering to galleries or customers.
ABOUT ARTWEEK WHAT PROCESSES ARE INVOLVED IN THE PRODUCTION OF YOUR WORK AND WHERE DID YOU LEARN THESE? I started out initially by going to the West Yorkshire Print Workshop and learnt different print making techniques. I then specifically studied screen printing and started creating my large Wildlife Screen Prints. However going to print elsewhere didn’t fit in with my lifestyle. At the time I was using charcoal to create my images for my silk screens, so I decided to continue with this
process as I was really enjoying this part the most! I am entirely self taught with my drawing. It is something that I have a passion for, it is purely emotional and something innate. I practice as much as I can and I am forever trying to push myself to try different mediums and styles. I embrace mistakes, sometimes they are gifts!
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE OF YOUR WORK IN THE ARTWEEK EXHIBITION? I will have a range of Bespoke Framed Original work in various sizes and different mediums. Mostly British Wildlife but also other animal and possibly human forms. I will also have my limited edition prints in two different sizes and twenty different designs of art cards.
WHERE ELSE DO YOU SELL YOUR WORK? I sell my work through my website www.lindsaynorman-art.co.uk Facebook and Instagram. I also have some fantastic galleries that sell my work The Yorkshire Gallery Halifax, Hope Gallery Redbrick Mill, Jarva Gallery Whaley Bridge, Spotty Dog Gallery Tenbury Wells and Mish Mash Gallery Nottingham.
DO YOU HAVE ANY UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS/PLANS? I am hoping to show my work as part of Globe Arts in their August exhibition and am currently working on some commissions and looking at some Christmas shows. I would also like to extend my studio in the near future too.

AWARDS & PRIZES AT HOLMFIRTH ARTWEEK 2018

The Best Newcomer 2018 is sponsored by Adrian Burnham of BDL Framing and is a £100 voucher to spend in the main Artweek exhibition in the Civic Hall and will be selected by last year’s Featured Artist, Sarah Stoker.
The John and Isabel Shaw Founder’s Prize for a 3D work or display is a £100 voucher to spend in the main Artweek exhibition in the Civic Hall. This prize is sponsored by Sarah Shaw Picture Restoration in memory of her parents who were the joint founders of Holmfirth Artweek.
The Howard Asher Colour Prize is sponsored by Howard Asher for the innovative and exciting use of colour in any medium. The prize is a £100 voucher to spend in the main Artweek exhibition in the Civic Hall.
The Best Picture in Show is sponsored by Janine Day and is a £100 voucher to spend in the main Artweek exhibition in the Civic Hall.
Naylor Industries Ceramic Prize is sponsored by Edward Naylor of Naylor Industries Plc and is a £100 voucher to spend in the main Artweek exhibition in the Civic Hall.
PRIZE WINNERS FROM LAST YEAR’S EXHIBITION BEST PICTURE IN SHOW: ALAN DALGETTY: Winning the Best Picture in Show prize for 2017 was a real surprise! I first heard that I had won when I received a text from Mick Kirkby-Geddes. An almost surreal moment wondering if the text was genuine! Once it sank in that indeed I had won the prize I felt both honoured and thrilled. To be recognised and rewarded for your efforts is a wonderful feeling and the prize of £100 worth of framing will be most useful! I paint for myself and because I have a need to, I can’t imagine myself not painting and drawing. It is a thrill trying new ways in which to express my ideas and my thoughts. The series of paintings that included the prize winner reflects my experimenting more with an abstract/realistic mixture of composition. My wanderings down this avenue I find both exciting and challenging. Sometimes rather frustrating too! The process becomes as important as the destination… My first entry in the Holmfirth Artweek was in the early 70’s, when I was fortunate enough to sell a painting. It went for £30 as I recall and it was a thrill
14
to have sold. Since then I have entered most years. I am now an invited artist. I believe the exhibition to be a great platform for both artist and visitor alike. The variety and breadth of work always makes for an interesting show. There is always something to please everyone, and always something to raise comment too! That is just how it should be. When someone buys a piece of your work it feels good and when that piece receives the ‘best in show’ prize that feels great. It makes the joy, the pain, the frustration and the hours spent creating something worth it. Julian Lennon once reflected that, “when you buy something from an artist you are not buying just one thing. You are buying a piece of a heart, a piece of a soul, a small piece of someone else’s life”. How true!
ABOUT ARTWEEK JOHN & ISOBEL SHAW FOUNDERS’ PRIZE: PAUL SMITH: I was delighted to have been awarded the John and Isabel Shaw Founders Prize at last year’s Holmfirth Art Week for my horse sculpture.
fox print called “Jarvis” by Lindsay Norman, the remainder I donated to Macmillan Cancer Care, a charity I am proud to support and have been supported by whilst beating Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2013. I am now looking forward to dreaming up more fun pieces for the next Art Week!
As a first time exhibitor I didn’t know what to expect, but the show has a great reputation. I entered two sculptures, a horse and a bull (which sold in the exhibition), both limited editions in bronze resin. The horse sculpture is of a Suffolk Punch, a heavy horse. I hope I have depicted the strength and power of the horse moving forward, solidly. My style is bold and semi-abstract, with sweeping curves. I attended the opening night preview at Holmbridge Mill and was immediately struck by David Mayne’s wonderful welded metal sculpture of a dog. I was very tempted to buy it on the night and when I was told that I had a voucher to spend on artwork there was no doubt where it would be spent. Taking part was a very good experience for me, I hope the very worthwhile charity was happy with the level of interest and sales too. The dog has a very good new home.
NEWCOMERS’ PRIZE: ANN TAYLOR It’s fair to say that I was shocked when Mick Kirkby-Geddes phoned me to say that I had won the newcomers’ prize. In fact I was speechless. I have been painting in water colours for a while now but last year I had a dabble into acrylics, which I really enjoyed. A new medium brought new techniques and offered different ways of working. The change of media seemed to free something I had been struggling with. The winning piece was a combination of the two techniques, water colour paint but applied with techniques I learned using acrylics. I love working with water colours. The way that colours can play, or fight, with each other on the paper when water is introduced I find offers a wonderful chance to explore what they are capable of offering. The change of style and technique, plus a use of more vibrant colours, led to a win for me. I thank the committee for having confidence in my work.
JANINE DAY SCULPTURE PRIZE: JOANNE COOKE I was really pleased to have won the Janine Day Sculpture Prize at Artweek 2017. The winning piece called “Chest Of Paws” was an idea I had floating around in my head for about a year so I was glad to finally make it a reality and thrilled by the response to the sculpture – I have had several enquiries for similar pieces featuring clients’ pets since the show! I spent most of my prize money on a beautiful

HOLMFIRTH ARTWEEK 2018
SPONSORSHIP PACKAGES HOLMFIRTH ARTWEEK 2018
Each year, Artweek attracts up to 10,000 visitors to the main exhibition….
We feel that local businesses could benefit from the exposure Artweek could give them, and at the same time help to raise money for a very worthy cause. As far as we can see, that’s a win-win situation!
With such a footfall we’re sure that companies will be interested in teaming up with us.
However, we know that procuring sponsorship in these difficult times is not an easy task and is very time consuming and requires much effort approaching businesses, making calls, etc., etc. As a volunteer organisation we just don’t have the manpower for this, so we intend to look at simpler approaches to procuring sponsorship, with deals starting at just £250.
Artweek is run entirely by volunteers and receives no funding or grants from the government. All the money generated from Artweek is donated to Macmillan Cancer Support and since 1967 a staggering £925,000 has been raised.
If anybody out there would wish to help us on this front, or if you would be interested in being an Artweek sponsor in future, you can contact us at: sponsorship@holmfirthartweek.org.uk

ABOUT ARTWEEK
MACMILLAN IN YOUR COMMUNITY
At the beginning of 2017 the Jayne Garforth Macmillan Information Centre underwent a ÂŁ53,000 transformation, funded by Macmillan. The project has created a new quiet room, where visitors can talk through any concerns they have in private, and away from busy, hospital areas. The project has also provided new furniture, improved IT equipment and a full redecoration. The centre, based at Calderdale Royal Hospital, provides a free, drop-in service for anyone with questions about cancer. In addition to the Halifax site, the service also has a base at The Greenlea Oncology Unit, Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. Both sites are manned by staff and volunteers, and are stocked with a range of cancer information booklets and other resources. Staff and volunteers at both sites provide financial, emotional and practical support often signposting service users to different services and support available within their local Community. This also includes raising awareness of cancer to meet the needs of the general public in the local community. Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust provide care to a population of over 460,000 people within our local community. The Macmillan Cancer Information Service is available to anyone affected by cancer providing support to patients, their carers and their families helping them deal with all aspects of cancer from diagnosis, through treatment and beyond. The Information Service Manager, Dinah Coggon, had previously worked between the two hospitals. This had shown to be inefficient and not conducive to an equitable service for the two areas. Therefore, a bid was put in to Macmillan to fund another member of staff for two years, costing ÂŁ71,000, to enable both hospital sites to be staffed. Towards the end of 2017, Mandy Davies came into post and, along with a recruitment drive for volunteers, the promotion and development of the service has improved. This
is demonstrated by an increase in demand for people accessing the service for support - from 660 service users accessing the service in 2016 to over 1700 in 2017 - and the post has facilitated and enabled further development of cancer information and support services for people living across the Calderdale and Huddersfield footprint.
FOR MORE INFORMATION, OR TO GET ADVICE AND SUPPORT, PLEASE CONTACT: Dinah Coggon or Mandy Davies Macmillan Unit, Calderdale Royal Hospital, Halifax 01422 222709 Greenlea Unit, Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, Huddersfield 01484 343614

OPENING TIMES
This series of work first came from a fascination with Koi Carp - I love their fluidity and bright colours.
The venue is designed to be used for up to 80 people in an informal setting with layout options for meetings, sit down meals or music nights, in fact come to us with an occasion and we can cater for it. With a private outside area, recently upgraded with new furniture and decorative lighting.
Monday - Tuesday...........11:00 - 19:00
Working on black pastel paper gives the feeling of depth in the water, and highlights their amazing colours. Still keeping the theme of Japan, Geishas have always been intriguing with their masked faces and bound clothing. They were trained to be regarded as moving Art! With the theme of International Women’s Day on Friday 8th of March, I felt it was apt to pay tribute to the specific lifestyle and culture of the Geisha.

The Yorkshire Colourists exhibition is based on the four artists’ very distinctive styles, each using colour in very different ways. All have a passion for paint and use it to express drama in their work, be it a landscape, atmospheric and moody skies, still life, animal portrait or abstract. The world is a very colourful place if you know how to look at it, the four agree. They were drawn together in their aim to paint and take inspiration from the dramatic Yorkshire landscape.
The tourist information centre is situated in a central location on the main Huddersfield Road at the junction with Victoria Street. It is opposite the Market Hall where other artists are exhibiting and 100 yards or so from the main Civic Hall exhibition

01484 319154 It’s all about typography and photography for Suzanne - be that traditional analogue or digital creations. Wherever she finds herself in the world, she is always keen to seek out and explore the mundane, functional and often overlooked, recording momentary details of daily life. There’s beauty in a daily commute, the letters on an old shop sign, the turn of a street corner, a vintage postcard, a printed paper bag, ghost lettering on a brick wall - anything in fact, if you care to look closely enough. She uses Instagram (@suzanneault) mostly to showcase her daily photography findings under the #recordingreallife hashtag and combines this with her continued love of type and brush hand lettering practice. suzannelault@gmail.com 07837 092794
MICHAEL BAILEY PAINTING, ACRYLIC mbaileyrufc@gmail.com Katherine’s work is inspired by the British coast and nautical culture. She creates maps of the shipping areas and individual pieces which explore coastal themes of seaside images, nautical tattoos and her love of maps. Katherine’s carved and pared-back work is then washed with colour which generously pools into the surface texture to create luminous pieces designed to bring the coast to mind. kagreenwell@yahoo.co.uk 07816 375299 Atlantic Ceramics Atlantic Ceramics atlanticceramics.co.uk

After graduation, the area of practice that I aim to work within is the area of community arts. In this field, I would like to present my own workshops and I hope to inspire others to create artwork for themselves. These printings have a personal meaning towards them including Castle Hill and Huddersfield Train Station that are popular tourist spots in Huddersfield. Since I lived in Leeds while studying at Leeds Arts University, I’ve not had a great experience due to my mental wellbeing and isolation from friends and family. I have been homesick and Castle Hill brings back a lot of memories from when I lived there

LINDA BULLEYMENT CERAMICS INVITED ARTIST
INVITED ARTIST I’m a picture framer by profession with an extensive technical design background which is perhaps quite evident in my work. I tend to work backwards in the creative process. Despite having never formally studied art, I’ve had a lifelong interest in art and design in general which was given a substantial kick up the arse by my involvement in the punk movement. A great believer in the DIY ethic, I’m now heavily involved in Artweek as the Treasurer.

ALISON CARTHY TEXTILES My practice is based upon engaging with nature by walking. Walking is a way to observe the natural world, a way of listening to the landscape. In my work I use craft methods, techniques once necessary for making and mending articles important to people’s wellbeing. The making is a way of thinking, investigating the possibilities and limitations of the materials a challenge to innovate. It’s a ‘slow’ process, the making may be more important than the finished piece. walkingweaver @alisoncarthy.co.uk

Dip Art & Design, Bath Academy of Art, Wiltshire. My passion is painting our great northen landscapes be it moorland, woodland or our beautiful rugged coast. Anna is a Sheffield based furniture designer-maker with over 20 years self-employment and teaching experience. She uses only temperate hardwoods and sheet materials from sustainable sources in her work. She also teaches part-time at The Sheffield College (in the past she taught furniture design and making at the University of Lancashire). Much of Anna’s time is spent teaching cabinetry to adults, both young and old, but in her free time she enjoys designing and making her own pieces. Anna is interested in making furniture for our everyday lives using simple forms and elegant shapes. At the moment she is using colour in her work by working with Valchromat (a coloured engineered wood-fibre board). In the Autumn of 2016 her “Leaning Shelf Unit” was shown as part of a major exhibition called ‘Made in Sheffield’ at Sheffield’s Millennium Gallery.

At The Guild jewellers we personally carry out the whole development of your piece of Jewellery from initial design and consultation, to finishing and polishing. We begin with your brief and ideas, work with you to develop specifications and handmake the finished piece. We carry out timeless traditions by hand piercing, forging, filing and sanding from sheet and wire, then soldering together the components and finishing your piece by hand. Some of the techniques used integrate modern technology and casting using lost wax methods and hand finish each piece by polishing, ultrasonic cleaning and cold enamelling or kiln firing with glass enamel. Our work includes all remodelling/redesigning and we can even provide a step by step photography of your design as it progresses if you are interested in the manufacturing process.

JOANNE COOKE SCULPTURE INVITED ARTIST
TERENCE CORDERY PAINTING, WATERCOLOUR FIRST TIME EXHIBITOR I grew up in Essex and loved making things from a young age. I studied Art at college and then went to Manchester to do a degree in 3D Design, majoring in ceramics. Once I had graduated, I supported myself by making giftware to sell at fairs and in shops. I briefly returned to Essex but felt drawn to the North again and on a whim chose Yorkshire. I contacted Leeds-based sculptor David Cooke who showed me round, helped me get my first studio and eventually became my husband! I started making dogs just for fun in 2000 after sketching our family dog then sculpting her in clay. I was soon addicted to making canines and took my first batch to a BCTF show where they all sold, giving me the impetus to carry on! I continue to show my work in galleries and regularly take pet commissions for private clients. David and I now live in Holmfirth and have just set up a new work space in Holmbridge. I am really thrilled to be a featured artist at this year’s Artweek alongside Lindsay Norman. joannecookesculpture @gmail.com 07957 228990 JoanneCookeSculpture joannecooke.com

Most of my work is inspired from walking in the Pennines, Peak District and Anglesey. I always carry a sketch book and my paintings are produced when I return. I believe that this keeps the painting fresh and vibrant. I also work quickly as this helps to maintain the “spirit of the place”. Whenever possible I paint plein air and if the weather conditions affect the painting so much the better as I believe that this helps to create a meaningful piece of work . I have always enjoyed working with a variety of media and waiting for the outcome when they dry.

Alex’s work combines found materials (books, magazines, packaging, photographs, postcards and other ephemera) with painted, drawn and printed elements. His work alludes to shared memory - cutting-up and re-assembling images from recent history, to reflect contemporary themes and popular culture. He works using a combination of traditional collage techniques and digital technology, and has recently had work published in Creative Review.

I have exhibited extensively, both with groups and singly. Most recent exhibitions include the White Box Gallery in Blackheath, London, the Haworth Art Gallery in Accrington, Bankfield Museum in Halifax and Heart in Headingley, Leeds. My work is the product of a lifetime of collecting. I have never been a minimalist or a subscriber to the idea that less is more. To me “let’s have lots more” is a guiding principle. My influences are cabinets of curiosity, religious shrines and reliquaries, ancestry worship and - above all myths and mystical creatures.

HOLMFIRTH ARTWEEK 2018 successfully earned a living from making and selling our Contemporary jewellery ranges through quality craft centres and art galleries nationwide, as well as in over 75 Dazzle Contemporary jewellery selling exhibitions. Our Asymmetrical range features a selection of 12 different gemstones, some of which are made to our specifications and are therefore unique to us. The charm of the range is the use of asymmetry, with one earring having a gemstone and the other some brass decoration. More recently we have been experimenting with an ancient Korean technique called Keum Boo where 24ct gold is fused to silver using heat and pressure. We then use punches to stamp marks into the surface in order to depict creatures or to give the impression of found objects from another time or culture.”

Pottery and Woodturning are my full time hobbies and my passion. Most of my work is making practical, usable items, always aiming to achieve the very highest standard of quality and finish. In my busy Huddersfield town centre workshop/studio I produce everything from cooking/tableware in wheel thrown glazed stoneware ceramics to intricate woodturned items such as pepper/salt grinders of a unique design and bespoke pens using exotic hardwoods. Since I retired from my family business some ten years ago I admit to still being a 7 days a week ‘workaholic’ except that I now enjoy living to work instead of working to live. I welcome commission work and just love a challenge to make anything within the scope of my capability. “

HOLMFIRTH ARTWEEK 2018 JANET GOLPHIN PAINTING, WATERCOLOUR INVITED ARTIST
Pam says ‘ I love working with glass. The colours and effects created can be amazing. I have always had an interest in the stories told in old church windows. The sun shining through them creates a sense of spirituality’. Pam studied art at school and was to go on to Degree level. Sadly she was unable to follow her dream but has found that her ‘creative style’ has appeared in other ways, namely through her eye for design and work with glass.
My work as an artist has evolved over many years, colour and composition being key. Having exhibited widely within Yorkshire,Wales, Scotland and London and the Home Counties, my work is currently on show at The Walker Gallery, Harrogate and The Russell Gallery, Putney, London. A member of The Royal Watercolour Society based at The Bankside Gallery in Blackfriars, London since 1996. More recently my creativity has developed into textiles having gained a BA 1st (Hons) Contemporary Surface Design & Textiles at Bradford School of Art & Media where I am currently Artist in Residence. I have supported Holmfirth Artweek for over 20 years originally as an invited artist by the late Trevor Stubley.

Pam has been working with stained glass for the last eleven years. She started by attending a ‘workshop’ at a local college in Sheffield and caught ‘the bug’! Since then Pam has worked in both the copper foiling and leaded techniques. She has successfully designed and made windows for herself and commissions. Pam has also made smaller pieces such as sun catches and 3D work. In 2012 she studied the art of fused glass at Darton College. This has opened up a world of different creative opportunities for her.

Hello, I’m Michelle Gregg, married mum of two teenage boys. By day I am a civil engineer with a challenging yet rewarding career. By night I enjoy expressing myself in a more artistic way through ceramics. I have been attending a ceramics evening class for over a year now. Natural shapes are my inspiration, such as the structure of flowers or the hidden forms to be found under a microscope. It is immensely exciting for me to be exhibiting for the first time and Holmfirth Artweek has provided a superb opportunity as it is both highly regarded and completely inclusive. I am also very pleased the event is raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support and hope this year will be as successful as previous.” shellgregg@yahoo.co.uk 07718 989011
KAREN GUILERAVENSCROFT TEXTILES
I live and work in the beautiful valley of Holmfirth. As a native of Yorkshire, I developed an appreciation for the stunning landscape and dramatic weather the county never failed to offer. After many years through art college and working in the design industry I began to paint professionally in 2011.Since then I have established successful gallery representation and commission work with paintings finding homes as far a field as New Zealand, Asia, South Africa, the Middle East and the USA. I’m a studio painter. I accumulate imagery through location photography, research of weather/cloud consequences, imagined places and simply being surrounded locally by wild beauty. The sky holds the key to my work, controlling light bursts, muted illumination, deep shadow, angry threats of drowning the landscape in rain as well as dense mist banks or delicate sheets of moisture passing through. You could be anywhere. enquiry@clarehaley.com 07985 416526 haleyartist @haleyartist clarehaley.com

ANN HAWORTH PASTEL
I have always held a passion for textiles. At Stafford College of Art in 1968 I studied Fashion Design & Embroidery. During this time I became aware of the then increasing availability of ethnic textiles. Their exciting colours inspirited me to create unique handmade garments. I completed many commissions for bespoke special occasion garments. An understanding of how textiles influence our surroundings led me to interior design. I acted as an informal consultant, executing many schemes. I discovered felt making in 1994 & became a member of The International Felt Makers Association, learning & then teaching. The unstructured nature of felt with its endless potential gives freedom of expression for my imagination in creating textile art. It also offers the opportunity to exploit the many techniques of working with textiles that I gained over the years. My contemporary approach to the ancient method of hand felt making incorporates a variety of natural materials & techniques.
For a number of years I dreamed of owning a craft business as I’ve always enjoyed creating, be it sewing, card making or painting, but I doubt I’d have taken the plunge had I not developed ME in 2014 and needed to give up work. As part of my recuperation I organised a new Christmas Fair here in the Holme Valley (Holmbridge Rural Fairs) and offered my creations to the public for the first time. The positive comments I received gave me the confidence to set up my business Holmemade. Everything I sell is designed and handmade by me, whether it’s a greeting card or gift for a newborn, a picture to brighten a wall, or a quirky cushion for a sofa or child’s bedroom. I source fabulous fabrics and pretty papers and there’s often a good dash of buttons, ric rac or pompom trim involved too. I love co-ordinating different colours and patterns to create something unique and if I can personalise what I create then even better. Everyone deserves something special and my aim is to provide just that. Holmemadewithlove@gmail.com 07803 464951 holmemadewithlove @holmemadelove holmemade.co.uk

As I work I respond to the clay’s ability to reflect and express my physical, tactile and spatial experiences - Experiences of figures in space, of sea and land, rocks and mountains and the whole gutsy feeling of life. Although I have long had a city based studio I have now moved back into the city and the cityscape and the hustle and bustle of people is having an influence on the imagery of my work. My work comprises of a range of hand crafted mirrors & mixed media images. The mirrors are hand sculpted and decorated. My work boasts original concepts and designs blending traditional and contemporary themes, with creative use of textures and colours. Since completing an MA at the Royal College of Art in London in 1996 I have divided my time between teaching, raising a family and continuing to make. I have taught across the UK to adults, degree students, young children and I am currently a visiting lecturer on the MA Ceramics course at UCLan in Preston. I produce one-off ceramic work for exhibitions and galleries from my purpose built studio in the garden. My work is inspired by a love of nature and the outdoors; lines and patterns within the landscape, the texture of grasses against a stormy grey sky, subtle variations in colour of a vast open seascape. Working Intuitively the surface evolves and changes as layers of colour are applied and textures built up, the clay itself becoming an integral part of the piece. Rolled sheets of clay or the face of wheel thrown bowls are developed by printing, impressing, marking and drawing between layers

Although I have no formal qualifications in ceramics and am mostly self taught (I have attended a few courses and adult education classes) I have been working with clay since 1974 when I helped to run informal pottery workshops with children in Liverpool. I have also been teaching adults the joys of clay-work for the past 24 years, currently running weekly classes at The North Light Gallery Art School, Huddersfield. I have spent the last 2 years creating a studio in Barnsley where I focus on agateware. I use red, white and black clay. The clay colours harmonise together and to ‘do the talking’. The red terracotta reminds me of my childhood spent in Africa. The vibrant red of the soil which turns to near black when wet. Nature inspires the agate patterns - striated rocks, variegated leaves, wood grain, the swirling sea and the changing sky with its cloud structures and colours. The shapes of my pots are influenced by nature. My favourite shapes

Bruce was born in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. He studied Fine Art at Newcastle University, where he began to paint on the spot, a practice he still continues. The practical difficulties of this, not least the weather, are less important to him than the chance to react directly to the colour, textures and light of the landscape. Bruce has exhibited in many galleries across the country, such as: Mall Galleries, London; Manchester Academy of Fine Arts; Leeds City Art Gallery and shows work on an ongoing basis in galleries in Hull, Batley and Staithes (where he is one of the Staithes Art School tutors). He visits art groups throughout the year giving demonstrations and workshops as well as running weekly classes near his home. Bruce’s work is in many private collections in the UK as well as in 14 other countries to date.

TANYA PALMER I’ve always been inspired by the open landscapes of mountain, moorland, and sea but I’m equally fascinated by people and city life. Combining what I observe with my interests in science and the history of ideas informs the interpretations and abstractions in my work. The picture shown here is based on a smallholding that I regularly walk past, the title “”You want it darker”” is drawn from Leonard Cohen’s final album and echoes a bleak view of our contemporary world. My work is produced to strict archival standards ensuring that all the materials used in the mounting and framing process are acid free. Owen is a freelance graphic designer, photographer, illustrator and general creative type working out of a lovely old house that overlooks the picturesque Holme Valley. Between everyday bread-and-butter design work over the years, Owen has carved out a niche producing vintage-themed illustrated poster art - taking inspiration from the Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Modernist movements, and reinterpreting modern themes in this unique style. One incredibly popular design celebrated a certain Big French Bike Race, and still sells well four years later. Owen frequently gets commissions for similar poster designs from across the UK and beyond. When not confined to the studio, Owen is often found marching across the local moors, pursuing a second career in landscape photography - where the portability of a small camera kit allows him to get to remote spots and capture lesser-known vistas of the stunning local landscape as it transforms under the changing weather and seasons. hello@owenphillipsdesign.co.uk 07538 430834 @op_creative owenphillipsdesign.co.uk

Neil Pittaway was born in Wakefield and studied at Cheltenham School of Art, Bradford University and the Royal Academy Schools. Neil is a member of the New English Art Club, the Royal Watercolour Society, the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, Leeds Fine Artists and an Associate Member of the Alpine Club. Neil has work in many collections including the V&A, the Ashmolean Museum, the Royal Collection, Fitzwilliam Museum, St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Guild Hall and the Indian Institute of Contemporary Art. Neil’s work reflects ideas from both eastern and western sources and perspectives, from our Anglo-European heritage to Asian landscapes. His work incorporates and explores these identities through direct and indirect observation, creating sometimes complex and seemingly agoraphobic spaces; a labyrinth, which reflects both built and natural environments and echoes the monumental histories that make up our collective international identities and heritage. njpittaway@hotmail.com 01924 274502 Artist1973 @NeilJPittaway njpittaway.co.uk

Born and raised in Mexico in 1990, Diana Raquel chooses colours and shapes to paint dreams, experiences, visions, and ideas. Her vivid imagination is translated into the complex shapes that create stimulating puzzles, interpreted differently by each individual. I am an acrylic and watercolour painter based in the Northeast of England, since July 2016. I have always had a love for art and began painting when I was young. I was encouraged to draw and paint by my sister, who was a great inspiration to me. My other big influences are Frida Kahlo and Salvador Dali. As my style evolved, I started to take an interest in the techniques of ‘free association’ developed by Freud, exploring the unconscious strength. I like to have a clear mind and work with the first thing that comes to me, such as objects and emotions. I then translate these feelings onto a canvas to create my work. I try not to label or think about what is supposed to be, I just paint what I feel and see.

After careers in special education and computing, I completed a degree in Fine Art at Bradford School of Arts and Media in 2009, specialising in printmaking and drawing. My work is concerned in particular with the performance of seemingly “private” rituals in the public sphere, such as using a mobile phone, drugdealing and the appropriation of other people’s space. I am also interested in more general social observation; I have been considering people’s attitude
THE ARTISTS towards cars and car ownership and am making some comments on dog ownership. Most recently I have concentrated on sporting imagery and am experimenting with different ways of representing the human form both in movement and repose. I have exhibited my work several times as part of the Saltaire Arts Trail, at Inprint exhibitions in Leeds, at the Bradford Open Art exhibition, at Gallery 339 in Halifax, at HG4 Gallery in Ripon and, most recently, at The Cooper Gallery, Barnsley. d.russell158@btinternet.com 01422 356947

Roger Simpson has been drawing/ painting since he was around twelve years old, he started to draw seriously when he was around twenty years old. He went to Batley and Dewsbury art colleges but only at night school as it was then, he was accepted into Batley art college full time but left very early as he felt he wasn’t doing what he wanted to do and that was to go outside and paint. He also felt that he could learn all this drawing and painting stuff himself and was never a person who liked exams so he started to study himself. He says I must have read every book in all libraries in a ten mile radius from where I lived, I read them over and over again to get the information in my head, I also practiced a lot at the same time, he even studied and practiced old master techniques like glazing, impasto, sfumato etc. He paints a lot of horse racing paintings which are quite famous and has won lots of awards for them and people buy them from all over the world including Hong Kong jockey club. roger@watercolourportrait.co.uk 01924 522545 roger.simpson.7737

PAINTING, ACRYLIC INVITED ARTIST davidsmall0170@gmail.com 01253 883738 SmallAcrylicCompany@etsy.com I am a printmaker focussing my work through the medium of lino block printing. Originally from Liverpool, where I trained as a graphic designer, I then taught for many years in Leeds.
THE ARTISTS Married to the painter Julia Keates, we are now based in Addingham. Working from my own observations, I use a ‘reduction’ printing process that has employed up to twenty different printing stages but only one block. The medium has a fascination for me. I enjoy the immediacy of the process that, in essence, is little changed from the earliest forms of printmaking. There is the excitement of manipulating the image and the serendipitous nature of the process, through unexpected textures, line, tone or colour balance. My work follows several different themes. My love of birds as inspiration continues, as does my fascination with landscape and water in all its various moods. After a recent trip to the Arctic Circle I’m currently developing a series of Norwegian seascapes.

Using oil paints, a palette knife, and the Pennines as inspiration, I create atmospheric paintings that explore colour and texture to bring the landscape alive. Working in an expressive and intuitive way, I try to capture experiences that are fleeting and that dissolve into the next; landscapes held together by rhyming connections of shape, line and colour. You can see more of my work during Artweek in The Fringe venues at Enjoy Art Gallery and the Sculpture Lounge Studios. kevin@threlfall.co.uk 07866 500184 ThrelfallArt @ThrelfallArt threlfall.co.uk
TORI TIPTON PAINTING, OIL
I am a Sheffield based artist working with the landscape and human form. I exhibit regularly. My main methods of practice are painting, drawing and photographic images. I attempt to be instinctive in my work and use marks and lines, often including text, whether legible or not, as part of the act of drawing and painting. Drawing is an essential part of my practice; charcoal an important medium and life drawing a discipline. Much of my painting work starts with the Humber Estuary. The area intrigues me because of its complex history, and the mix of raw beauty and industrial activity. I have an interest in the historical connections places have, including personal ones, and how they effect what we see. The landscape provides material for exploring facts and suppositions. “How we look at the landscape determines how we internalise it.” 2stephentodd@gmail.com 07980 281737 stephen.todd.777 @artfulstevie stephen-todd.com

INVITED ARTIST
I am an artist and illustrator from West Yorkshire. I recently moved my studio to the Netherlands where I work and live. My work records fleeting moments of everyday life through form, colour and texture. I am interested in the transition of narratives from the places I travel; these take form as layered abstract compositions, often traces of figures, pattern and bold colour. I have worked with clients such as Converse, Virgin Holidays, Universal Works and Small Magazine. I also have taught Illustration at Nottingham Trent University, Amsterdam Fashion Institute and Wilhelm de Kooning Academy of Arts, Rotterdam. kay@kayvanbellen.com +31 6309 77301 kayvanbellen.bigcartel.com instagram.com/kayvanbellen
PETE VAN-ZANDT PAINTING, OTHER
I graduated from MMU with a BA hons in Fine Art Printmaking. I specialised in screenprinting, lino cut, and combining print media with collage. Having taught for 25 years I retired from leading an art department to pursue my own work. My work has two main strands. One aspect is creating a series of mystical hieroglyphics in order to communicate ideas. I have been fascinated by the use of symbols in language and have created my own form of expression which may delight or confuse. The other aspect is an exploration of the contrast between order and chaos. As we pass through life and experience many random events and in our efforts to survive we try to control these happenings to a greater or lesser degree by imposing order. We all attempt to minimize chaos in our own individual ways. Through learned ritual and sequential behaviour patterns we try to create our own acceptable balance. I am available for print workshops and commissions. val_vernon@yahoo.co.uk 07882 368167

CARO WARD PAINTING, ACRYLIC INVITED ARTIST
The equine figure is and has been the subject that I am known for. After many years of studying the form, its gravitational vibrations, light and shadows, differing breeds and personalities, its now time for a change of pace. In my student days I was tasked with different subjects and asked to engage with them and my relationship to the subject of still life. This new interest is dedicated to my mother, who in her late eighties is the guardian of a large authentic Georgian house that has housed many family heirlooms. This has given rise to new artistic introspections. The objects are part of a collection and shows the passage of time through the design and purpose of normal items. I want to explore the feeling towards a moment in time and therefore history, but create a contemporary feel to the art work that follows As an artist who has had the privilege of showing work in many galleries, and recently being part of a show in New
