KEY CLUB

Letter From Your Editor Dear Key Club Members, For those who have chosen to be in committees, committee sorting is complete! Be sure to check your emails for committee meeting dates and rooms. It is important that you attend and contribute to your committee because that is what you signed up for! In case this hasn’t been noticed, Key Club has a bulletin board! It is located in the center section of the cafeteria. Please stop by to look at it! On the bulletin board we have updates, a calendar, information about Key Club, information about the executive board, and of course, photos. This bulletin board expresses what Key Club is at Brooklyn Tech. Along with our bulletin board, we also have mailboxes! These are located in 7C1, also in the center section of the cafeteria. Want to write a letter or note to a executive board member? Drop it in their respective mailbox! But please be respectful and keep things appropriate. Finally, articles. Thanks to those members who sent me articles voluntarily and willingly and thanks to those I had to chase after for articles! Please remember that articles are important because that is where members can speak out about their thoughts about an event or club, etc. These articles are the members’ voices and I want members to be recognized in the newsletter. Plus, writing an article gets you points! Don’t hesitate to send me articles at holy@thetechkey.com. -Holy Cheong

OCTOBER October 2, 2011— Walk to Cure Diabetes (JDRF) From last year’s JDRF to this year’s JDRF, the outcome is still the same; hundreds of supporters and walkers all ready to take part in the walk to cure diabetes. And each of the members from Brooklyn Tech Key Club knew what this event was for and together we played a part in bringing us one footstep closer to curing diabetes. - Holy Cheong

October 16, 2011— Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Breast Cancer is one of the leading causes of death for women in the world. This was a fact I had already known but it wasn’t until I participated in the Breast Cancer Walk did I realize how many people were affected by this deadly cancer. People of all colors, ages, shapes, and sizes showed up for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Prospect Park on Sunday, October 16th, 2011, proving that this illness is indiscriminate— it can affect anyone. The several mile-long walk was filled with cheerleaders, music, singing, and overall, a radiant positive energy. The amount of support and spirit displayed by everyone touched me and convinced me to continue supporting this worthy cause for as long as it takes to find the cure and beyond. -Joanna Huang “...to continue supporting this worthy cause for as long as it takes to find the cure and beyond”

Brooklyn Tech Key Club members from left to right: Calvin Guo, Dennis Chan, Tyler Zhang, and their fellow friend from Goldstein, Thomas Zhang. On Sunday October 16, 2011 I attended the Breast Cancer Walk in Prospect Park. The moment I arrived I received a pink balloon from some walkers. While waiting for the walk to begin, I made friends with several other fellow walkers in Brooklyn Tech Key Club, all ready to make strides against breast cancer. Although I got lost a few times in the park, I survived to complete the three mile walk, ahead of my key club, and I felt a sense of happiness. Not only did I beat my club, but I played a part in bringing the world one stride closer to fighting against breast cancer. This was the first Key Club event I attended and it was fun. I hope to go to the next Key Club event and help the community! - Nabib Ahmed

October 29, 2011— Fall Rally @ Edward R. Murrow H.S.

Fall Rally was one of the most helpful event in Key Club. At this event, there were workshops where members could attend and learn about the aspects of Key Club and how the club works. Some of the workshops focused on fundraising and some focused on running for a higher position. The district board was there as well and assisted in giving us information about Key Club. But the best part was the pizza for lunch. By the afternoon many of the members were hungry and pizza was the right medicine to our tummies. Not only did we learn about Key Club at the Fall Rally but we had fun meeting other members from other divisions and bonding with our own key club. - Committee leader, Johnny Leung

Kisses for Key Club!

INTERNATIONAL NEWS March of Dimes Foundation & Key Club’s Involvement The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. March of Dimes was founded by our 32nd President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, in the fight against polio. After the discovery of the polio vaccine, March of Dimes focused their efforts to improve the health of babies and has been successful with the help and enthusiasm of many grassroots volunteers. Since 1978, Key Clubs have hosted fundraising and awareness programs to support the March of Dimes, raising over $100,000 through fundraisers in 2010 alone! Key Club members, like you, can support the March of Dimes each semester: in the fall, raise awareness by hosting programs throughout November for Prematurity Awareness Month and in the spring, raise funds by participating in March for Babies, the March of Dimes largest annual fundraiser. November is Prematurity Awareness Month November is when the March of Dimes focuses everyone’s attention on the impact premature birth has on babies and families. Throughout November, Key Club members can support the March of Dimes mission by educating peers on the importance of healthy lifestyles through the use of our teen2teen interactive program. You can also contact your local office to see what volunteer needs the local Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the hospital might have, such as making scrapbook pages or hosting a dinner for parents. Make it a priority to spread awareness the whole month by dedicating your Facebook statuses to facts about the March of Dimes & the serious problem of preterm birth; and you can tweet about it too! And on Global Prematurity Day, November 17, you can do a range of activities to spread awareness about the global problem of preterm birth! Your club can host an event at your school to educate others and you can dedicate a day to wear purple, the March of Dimes color. Look for more ideas coming in fall 2011. March for Babies An excellent way to support the March of Dimes is by participating in our largest annual fundraiser, March for Babies. Sign up at marchforbabies.org/kiwanis to join or start a new Key Club team! Choose “Key Club” as your division, and if you can’t locate your team on that page, simply enter your high school name with “Key Club” included as your team name in the bottom in the “Enter as much as you know” box. You can find the date and location of your March for Babies at that site also! There are tons of fun ways to get involved with March for Babies. Your club can host coin collections, dances, and inschool challenges to raise funds. Then join with your community in March for Babies to walk to give every baby a healthy start.

KEY Clubber of the Month What does it mean to be “Key Clubber of the Month”? We give out this award each month to a particular key club member who has made the most impact on our club for that month. In order to get this award you have to attend events, and participate. We want to see someone who is actively helping and contributing to their community. But we also want to see someone who is representing Brooklyn Tech, and most importantly, key club. This member should be the role model for other members.

THIS COULD BE YOU!
