S-V2-19 Fearlessly Fashionable

B“Bespoke” is the buzzword for this extraordinary waterfront home. Located on Lido Key, the neighborhood of Lido Shores is a special place that conveys the rich history of Sarasota through its variety of architectural styles. The homeowners, who couldn’t settle on just one style, enlisted architect John Potvin to create a home that included several timeless elements customdesigned to suit their liking. Michael Voigt, president of Voigt Brothers Construction is no stranger to building on-of-a-kind homes. “From the elaborate millwork and tile details, to the aquarium and pool area complete with a grotto, the surprises never stop, whether you’re inside or out,” describes Voigt. u

Left: Architect John Potvin’s design, majestically displayed, melds an assortment of styles. The roof lines and plantation shutters denote West Indies island living, the contrast of light and dark is characteristically transitional, lantern lighting references Old World, and the pagoda-style entry calls to mind Asian construct. It’s eclectic, it’s fearless…and most importantly, it works!

Pike designed the living room to stand the test of time, using exquisite pieces to be treasured and passed down as heirlooms to future generations. The Ebanista chair, upholstered in a cut velvet zebra print by Osborne & Little, is finished in weathered stone. The three-part antique mirror and cocktail table are also by Ebanista. A gently curved Schumacher sofa bears petite twisted legs finished with brushed silver leaf and lush, pale gray velvet by Romo. The fireplace boasts a chic Glacier limestone surround. Set just alongside the silver and sapphire bamboo and silk rug from Stark, the gleaming Steinway & Sons grand piano is top of the line.

For this active family that relishes the outdoors, Voigt and his team used their dexterity and resolve to ensure that not a single element was omitted. “We are fortunate enough to build highly customized homes for many great clients,” Voigt says.

Interior designer Gary Pike of Point West Designs felt equally blessed. Pike was able to live out a designer’s dream: carte blanche to design whatever he wanted. Determined to lend a history to the home despite its obvious new-construction status, he incorporated significant pieces to make every room special, and developed a color scheme sure to withstand shifting trends. “I used blues, silvers, and grays—a serene palette with a long shelf life,” Pike explains. “I was very lucky that the clients gave me creative license to design amazing things for them,” he adds. u

Above and Right: The kitchen is a symphony of glinting stainless and matte silver, composed with rich materials and upscale appliances. Acute attention to detail is evident in the kitchen, which includes decorative Art for Everyday crown and columns on the cabinetry from FineCraft Custom Cabinetry, the brushed brass accents on the Thermador refrigerator from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery, and the one-of-a-kind hood designed by Pike. Sleek and shining, the countertops are made using Tahiti Quartzite.

Left: The handsomely appointed study includes several notable elements— among them a partner’s desk customdesigned by Pike with a Cygnus granite top that waterfalls down the sides. Sitting with importance behind it is a swivel desk chair clad in vibrant blue leather and detailed with brass nailheads. At the bar, a glass tile backsplash from Tile Market of Sarasota blends iridescent turquoise and gray. Dark espresso-stained wood beams come to a peak in a stunning ceiling detail that also includes insets of natural grasscloth.

Right: Contrary to your everyday stair landing, this one has much to take in. The stairwell itself features an oak railing and treads stained dark to match the wood floors from Sticks & Stones Flooring. The staggered spindle design is wrought iron finished in flat black. An Uttermost console from International Design Source is shaped by slender steel bars interwoven into a geometric pattern. The Rotunda pendant, designed by E.F. Chapman in white glass with a burnished brass ringed inset, invokes midcentury style, while the iron chandelier is an ode to Cubism.

Above: The master bedroom is pure, unadulterated elegance. Inspiration for the regal furnishings, which begin with a true showpiece: the Prado II bed with four turned and segmented posts topped with decorative finials and custom-finished in antique silver. The Parsons-style table at its foot displays a precious antiqued 12-karat white gold finish. A pair of Villa Lorenzo bedside chests feature intricate silver scrollwork upon their shared finish: a painted, polished, and antiqued dove gray. The channel-tufted Genovese sofa, upholstered in alabaster velvet, sits beneath a spectacular Montovani chandelier featuring rock crystal with smoky quartz accents and clear crystal beading that shimmers below the recessed lights—designed by Pike and Light Up Your Life—in the coffered ceiling.

Above Right: A breathtaking water view calls for a master bath that does justice to it, and this one doesn’t disappoint. An undulant freestanding Penhaglion polished nickel tub from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery mirrors the geometric brass fretwork set within the New Ravenna high-gloss tiled floor from Tile Market of Sarasota. The spacious, glass-enclosed Kohler steam shower features a dynamic Patagonia black and silver granite slab and sophisticated Thassos marble tray ceiling. Pike custom designed the refined chelsea gray cabinetry, fabricated by FineCraft Custom Cabinetry and outfitted with Nest Studios satin brass hardware in varietal shapes. A rock crystal chandelier includes dangling accents of smoky quartz rock crystal.

Below Right: This closet by Contemporary Closet Concepts, thoughtfully designed for the lady of the house, contains her extensive wardrobe behind mirrored and wood-framed doors painted in Benjamin Moore’s Alaskan Skies. A Samad area rug is placed over truffle-finished and wire brushed oak floors by Mount Castle from Sticks & Stones Flooring.

Though the project spanned several years, the team’s creative momentum never waned. Prefabricated simply wasn’t in their vocabulary; all the cabinetry from scratch. The same can be said for the lighting, the ceilings…even the closets (which are sure to make any fashion-lover swoon!). “Looking back, I sometimes don’t know how we did it!” Pike exclaims.

Between the clients’ commitment to customization and the team’s opportunity to let their collective talents shine, this home, bespoke in every way, is truly in a class by itself.

Below: It’s far and away the designer’s creative blend of materials that makes this outdoor kitchen so exciting. The backsplash, which was actually one of the first selections made for the home, showcases a hexagonal Teak Barrel tile in a natural tone. A contrast inset using a mélange of blues is set behind an angular exhaust hood. The cabinetry is from Brown Jordan and includes the unique addition of frosted glass, and the waterfall countertop is fabricated from an intergalactic granite called Black Fantasy.

Above: The pool and grotto offer shameless allure. Stacked stone on the columns and TV wall, outfitted with a big screen by Wicked Smart Homes, create textural interest, as does the custom-blended tile detail that surrounds the pool. Grand Effects fire bowls light the night, and contoured Century chaises raise the luxury factor to a higher level.

Above: The exterior architecture and outdoor living areas of this house are every bit as impressive as the interior. Countless expansive balconies that feature transparent glass railings provide a multitude of opportunities to enjoy the glorious outdoors. At every level, there’s something to explore. And with the inclusion of every bell and whistle one could possibly ask for, this veritable “modern-day castle” leaves nothing to be desired.
