EDITOR’S LETTER Home & Design welcomes 2019 with renewed commitment to shine the spotlight on Naples’ thriving luxury real estate market, where creative

architecture,

the

highest

quality

construction, and innovative interior design are desired and appreciated. Each home in this issue was selected to inspire and allow our readers to explore the possibilities and resources as they build, renovate, or redesign a Florida home. Several of the features focus on residences ideally located—either on the water or in one of the area’s luxury communities—but in need of a current-day reimagining. We showcase the superb ability of our architects, builders, and interior designers to deliver each tremendous transformation. With every turn of a page you will uncover the story behind the distinctive homes that grace the pages of Home & Design. Ultimately, your home should reflect the way you live and share your lives—as such, you’ll find the selections on these pages are as diverse as the people who are fortunate enough to live in this thriving piece of paradise. Enjoy the magazine,

A white exterior with warm gray accents and black Andersen windows sets the tone for this classic blackand-white themed home with a modern twist, located on Bonita Beach. Residential designer Rich Guzman’s coastal-modern architectural design is enhanced by its clean lines, smooth stucco exterior, and expansive use of windows to allow for an abundance of natural light.

Bold and beautiful, this beachfront home with never-ending Gulf views encompasses more than 5,300 square feet of carefully planned and masterfully executed lifestyle space for its future owners. The passion of the tried and true team of residential designer Rich Guzman of R.G. Designs, Potter Homes’ Ryan Potter, and Freestyle Interiors designer Alex Thies, makes this beach house a “favorite to date.” u

Above: A cable wire wine rack adds a playful twist to the bar pass-through while a geometric Phillip Jeffries wallcovering helps to define the added entertaining space. The bar is coupled with the focal staircase to create another visually interesting counterpart to the home’s dramatic views. The stairs’ stainless steel cable and dark-stained oak handrail complements the wine area’s racking. A black and nickel chandelier from Revelation illuminates the entry foyer below.

“This one is unique, it is one of the largest we have built. Rich took the master suite to the edge of the footprint, so looking out, the view is only brilliant blue water—it is breathtaking. On top of that, the interior design is like nothing we’ve ever done,” explains Potter. Residential designer Guzman agrees. With each new beachfront plan, he draws upon what he’s learned and works to envision something different and exciting. “We approach each house as if we are living in it,” explains Guzman. “I’m always inspired by new innovative ideas, the environment, and nature. We wanted to create a home that was forward thinking. I wanted the master to feel as if it was sitting on the water by removing the deck.” u

Left: Deep brown stained floating oak ceiling beams create a bold statement in the living room as do black painted window frames. A custom black and white built-in follows the classic theme. A sectional anchors the room on a floating plinth base surrounded by natural textures of teak, jute and seagrass. “I wanted the house to feel warm and inviting, and not too trendy,” notes Thies.

backgrounds, dark wood beams, and surprising pops of color mix with earthy tones to create a warm captivating design. “I moved away from the grays and the blues which we’ve done so much of and brought back the earthiness in the browns and the warm tones,” notes interior designer Thies. “I feel like it is a newer take on coastal. It is hard to do a house on the beach and not play off of your natural backdrop so there are pops of blue, but there are also other accent colors throughout. We kept the backgrounds true to the neutrals outside the windows—the sand, the seagrass, the driftwood—then added bits of color to make a statement.” u

A hand-beaded Brisbane chandelier by Kichler draws upon the natural elements of the Gulf view. Right: A classic black and white kitchen finds new life with an exotic quartzite countertop and Daltile smoke and black glass backsplash set in sharp contrast to the white cabinetry. The white kitchen hood is strapped with black metal to play on the classic design. Wavy glass pendants from Lighting First and natural twisted rope counter stools juxtapose the clean lines of the cabinetry. The chef’s kitchen is equipped with Thermador appliances from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. 62

Above: Guzman pushed the master bedroom to the edge of the footprint, creating an amazing window-wall of stunning Gulf views and additional living space. A handmade Phillip Jeffries wallcovering sets the scene for the black and white upholstered Vanguard bed and seating group. Designer Thies added bold accents of golden yellow to bring a punch of light in the form of custom Harlequin drapery panels, artwork and bedding. A side door leads to a shared balcony to enjoy a cup of coffee in the warm breeze.

DREAMbig

A HOME OF POSSIBILITIES IN OLD NAPLES 78

www.HomeAndDesign.net

A modernized take on a beach cottage is achieved on the front exterior with a dark metal roof, bronze metal-accented windows, and warmly-hued stucco in lieu of the expected white-on-white. The cedar garage is stained dark for contrast. Unadorned columns have a truss-and-bracket detailing for a subtle nod to coastal elegance. The stormwater management system incorporated into the landscape design provides hidden and functional flood protection, designed by J.R. Evans Engineering. Concrete cement pavers with a darker border add interest to the driveway, and the flanking towering oak trees are grand in scale as well as appearance.

W

With any endeavor, “go big or go home” is often a good rule of thumb. And if you’re fortunate enough to purchase the Waterside Builders’ residence on a lot as deep and wide as this one—a rarity in Old Naples—you can go big and go home at the same time. Set in a quaint and desirable location, the home was conceived by Steven Jallad, director of residential design at MHK Architecture & Planning in collaboration with the firm’s owner/ architect Matthew Kragh. The desired aesthetic was an edgier version of a beach cottage, and with 5,700 square feet in addition to the enormous outdoor living space the ample lot provided, a beach cottage was reimagined as a veritable beach castle. u Below: The great room lives up to its name, with great views of the pool area with fully pocketing Andersen sliders. The ceilings are enhanced with mitered poplar beams, unexpectedly and beautifully stained gray. The Macaubas Quartzite stone surround of the custom fireplace makes it a rich focal point. Bernhardt Wynn chairs, upholstered in a textured ivory fabric by Schumacher, are accentuated by the dovetail-edged waterfall tables, custom-designed by Sonders and finished in cerused charcoal. Pale silver rugs atop the Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring, installed by Naples Flooring Company, ground the airy space. Right: A one-of-a-kind custom Ed Koehler lit branch ceiling detail illuminates the entryway. The ebony-stained mahogany door is used in place of a painted barn door that one might expect to see in a coastal cottage. A floating staircase highlights the scene using a contemporary cable rail system; oak treads are stained to match the Legno Bastone Wide Plank Giuseppina European White Oak flooring used throughout the home. Streamlined columns provide clean architectural detailing, and an assortment of stone urns in shades of gray infuse the room with organic flavor. A Moooi’s Heracleum Endless Suspension fixture illuminates the split bamboo dining table that seats eight.

A sizeable, efficient island is topped with Mont Blanc quartzite. A pair of domed hanging Onn pendants from Arturo Alvarez perpetuates the organic theme. The contemporary lineup of Logan white leather woven counter stools standing on slender polished-nickel legs speak a modern language. The backsplash is treated with textural ceramic from Tilebar, further flattering an already stunning kitchen. The wine room, which Jallad refers to as “eye candy, features natural walnut Millesime racks, while a spherical black fixture from Aerin by Visual Comfort adds a touch of the industrial. www.HomeAndDesign.net

83

Indeed, Jallad did “go big.” The graciously-sized elements include a vast great room, a showplace kitchen, a wine room that could compete with that of a fine restaurant, a huge pool and spa… even a freestanding cabana, which, being completely detached from the primary structure, serves as a mini-house of its own. “One of my favorite things about this home is the massive wall of glass you’re presented with as you enter,” says Jallad. “Looking out onto the pool you get a ‘wow’ and then you turn around and see the beach and get a ‘double wow’.” There’s another big bonus: Gulf views from many rooms in the home. “Steven and Matt really nailed the floor plan. We were able to emphasize the views all over the place,” says Mike Assaad, owner of Waterside Builders, who was an integral part of making Jallad’s plans, and interior designer Linda Sonders’ vision, come to life. u

Above: The master bath is awash in natural light and an abundance of room for handsome features. DXV’s Lyndon freestanding soaking tub, the unique L-shaped vanity configuration fabricated in quarter-sawn white oak, and the shower—tiled with Bianco Venato hexagons, that’s roomy enough for two—create a luxurious space. The Brizo Litze polished-nickel rain shower heads are from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. The shaded lighting is from Visual Comfort, and thoughtful accents such as a charcoal lattice rug and hair-on-hide ottoman complete the look. Right: In keeping with the rest of the house, the master bedroom is sprawling, but still feels cozy thanks to the Sussex four-poster bed from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, and on-trend hotel-style bedding. The voluminous space allows for additional seating—CR Laine’s Hans lounge chair, and Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams’ Bella sofa. Luxe shagreen appears in varying shades seen on the dresser and Century Monroe chest. A vaulted ceiling is treated with nickel gap tongue-and-groove, with a knotted Link pendant from LZF for decorative appeal.

In fact, according to Sonders, early design decisions were made to ensure that it wouldn’t be mistaken for the typical coastal cottage. “My goal was to keep the look very organic but also current,” says Sonders. Bronze-clad windows, a floating staircase, and the absence of crown moulding are just some of the elements that give the home its edge. Sonders benefited from the generosity of space, specifying the precise furnishings she wanted without the rooms looking overcrowded. “We were allowed more breathing room,” she says. Nevertheless, she was careful not to “over-decorate,” staying true to her philosophy that negative space is always okay. n

Above: A wonderful addition to the home, the entirely separate cabana is what Jallad refers to as “its own little haven.” It features an angular cypress roof with tongue-and-groove ceilings that hearken back to the cottage feel, but a quick transition to contemporary times is made with simplistic columns and impact glass doors. The trusses and brackets on the rafters emulate the architecture of the main house. Left: The spacious loft serves as both a retreat and an extra relaxation area that, due to the balcony, is inclusive of the pool area when entertaining. The Maxwell sectional and 1950s Italian swivel chairs are for lounging. Organic elements are seen in the round stone coffee table and Jeffan’s Delphine rattan chandelier. Of course no coastal home would be complete without a hint of seashells, and Arteriors’ Tiffany fixture, hanging above the staircase, pays homage to the ocean.

This translated into the interior furnishings and fixtures as well. “The family wanted nothing formal or too high-maintenance. They wanted a place to relax, and together we had great fun creating just that,” says Forbes. “My philosophy is the foremost issue in any design decision; that this isn’t just a job, a project or only a house—this is someone’s home and it must reflect what they want.” n

DESIGNER DREAMS DELIVERED

Sunset views over Naples’ exciting 5th Avenue can be enjoyed via a Lloyd Flanders outdoor grouping oriented on a terrace balcony which runs the entire length of the condo. Inside the living room, an abstract landscape reminiscent of the cool greens, blues, and sandy neutrals of the nearby Gulf beaches sets the tone found throughout the home. A Vanguard sectional sofa of neutral nubby linen, and painted wood, chrome-legged coffee table flanked by armless taupe leather wing chairs are from International Design Source. A pair of sea mist green upholstered Jessica Charles ottomans adds extra seating and Surya accent lamps atop beechwood-stained tables softly illuminate the space.

You may have visited Naples and, like so many before you, fallen in love with its sugar sand beaches, world-class shopping and fabulous dining. You may have even dreamed you could stay and live forever, close to everything in this true paradise by the Gulf. u

Below: Krümm made a clever use of the stacked space delineating the intimate dining area. To keep the view unobstructed, the designer recommended backless Vanguard benches—in zinc metallic livable leather with Fog Shagreen sharkskin leather detailed inserts—as guest seating at the gray painted wooden table, set against the wood-look porcelain tile flooring by Design Works. Metallic leather tops the Vanguard armchairs, upholstered in champagne fabric and accented with nail-head details, that serve as the host and hostess seating. The Eurofase Londra Collection chrome chandelier from Lighting First is positioned to maximize the view. The entire dining area is flanked by floor-to-ceiling mercury glass mirrors, which reflect the sunset’s hues and further define the space.

Crisp white custom cabinetry accented with lighted glass shelving contrasts nicely with the driftwood gray range hood and island, topped with Calacatta Nuvo Caesarstone in this elegant kitchen. A pair of Eurofase Lighting chrome pendants from Lighting First highlights the low-key glamour afforded by the metallic leather Vanguard stools, clad in a silver geometric cotton-blend fabric.

For one couple, their fondest dreams came true in a more glorious way than they may have imagined, brought magically to life by designer Kira Krümm of Koastal Design Group. The couple had—through Gulf Coast International Properties—purchased their first home in Naples, a brand new three-bedroom plus den, three and a halfbath, 3,283 square foot condominium in the boutique-style Residences at 5th & 5th. The homeowners then went shopping for an interior designer and walked into Krümm’s studio gallery. u Below: The hand-applied Dune LusterStone artistic finish creates a serene ambiance in the master bath. The “Blue Horizon” painting reflecting a storm over the beach brings color to the space. Porcelain sea urchins and hand-blown glass orbs moored above the tub provide a bit of marine-inspired whimsy. Krümm chose freestanding sculptural towel racks to add the final bit of luxury for the bather.

130

www.HomeAndDesign.net

Setting a warmer tone in the master bedroom, KrĂźmm made use of artisans from the company she and her husband own, Studio Artistic Finishes, to hand apply a subtly metallic warm champagne finish to the headboard wall and ceiling tray. The other walls sport a lighter Dune LusterStone artistic finish. The sculptural German silver base of the Bernhardt armchair reflects light from the French doors to the balcony. The Messini champagne wool and silk rug provides soft cushioning underfoot.

Above: Natural grasscloth covering adds texture to the walls of the dual-use den. The linen-clad Jessica Charles queen size sleeper sofa serves as extra sleeping for guests and the Vanguard ottoman with Cliffside Grey wood base and platinum geometric fabric top, is set on casters for ease of furniture rearrangement. A pair of shelving units bookend a textured metalframed Moroccan mirror adjacent to a handmade paper framed art piece. The desk, of burnished silver leaf applied by hand, and Century desk chair in soft gray leather, afford the perfect workspace in this versatile room.

132

www.HomeAndDesign.net

“It was a little like magic,” says Krümm. “We were very simpatico right from the start and the homeowners truly shared my aesthetic. They loved everything in my studio and supported my vision, therefore they trusted my recommendations and the selection process was seamless. I was given the privilege of furnishing their entire new home—from wall coverings to cutlery—and the only real challenge was time.” Choosing an elegant but totally livable design that had luxurious appointments yet a casual feel, wasn’t a problem for Krümm, a 25-year veteran of the design business who has won countless awards for her work; it was the timeline until move-in that made the experience a nail-biting one. “We had only six weeks to select and procure the furnishings,” says Krümm, which meant the designer and her team had to drop nearly everything, concentrate fully on this one project, order readily available furniture and furnishings, and use her design mastery to assure the whole project came together in time. u Above: A Vanguard king size bed, with Neptune Patina bronze synthetic performance leather, studded with nailhead detail commands the masterful king bedroom. The dresser and nightstands, with their warm wood finish and nickel pulls, are from International Design Source. The foot of the bed is bordered by a Lexington bench covered in metallic bronze linen and the bedding, designed by KDG Custom, includes an Ikat-patterned comforter. Accent pillows reflect the tropical green shades found in the room’s “Agave” triptych photo by Michael Berman.

“My team and I managed to pull it off and when the homeowners arrived their table was set for dinner, the kitchen was stocked, and even the towels and beds were laundered and ready for company,” says Krümm. “Everything was ready for them to enjoy, welcoming and attuned perfectly to their tastes. n

Below: Platinum raffia wall covering brings a sense of movement to this dramatic powder bath. Eurofase crystal sconces from Lighting First inset into the tall mirror provide dramatic lighting for the Caesarstone quartz countertop with trough sink. Decorative shell accessories add lightness to the dark driftwood finish cabinetry. Left: Custom designed shades hand-woven in the Philippines frame the doorway, as they do all windows and doors in the home. A Bernhardt bench of tarnished nickel with acrylic legs, upholstered in zinc-colored polished cotton, sits beside the tallboy Vanguard dresser topped with a banded metal mirror and seashell base accent lamps from Wilson Lighting. The custom bedding is organic cotton and accent pillows mimic waves from the nearby Gulf.

RISE and shine

RESURRECTING A BEACHFRONT DREAM

I

It’s a tragic tale with a happy ending. A couple had just put the final touches on their beautiful 5-bedroom home when fire destroyed it. Once the grief and loss subsided, determination took over, and they reenlisted original residential designer Richard Guzman of R.G. Designs, original general contractor William Must, and award-winning interior designers Kim Collins and Alina Dolan of Collins & DuPont Design Group to restore their residence and elevate it to a level surpassing what once stood in its place. Rising like a phoenix from the ashes, the home took on a new life, with a few exciting additions that would enhance the drama of its prior state. “We wanted to erase the negative emotions and effect an outcome that would be truly spectacular,” says Collins. Fortunately, the external structure remained intact, so the first order of business was to eradicate the damage. “We started with a remediation—removing any traces of smoke, water and fire,” says Must. “Then, we had to gut the whole place.” His game plan was to find a superbly-skilled group of subcontractors to perform this feat. “We needed nothing short of a miracle to pull off something this massive,” he says. u

Left: The front exterior, which survived the fire, was simply freshened with new materials like a metal roof and stucco finish. Guzman’s four-story design with an octagonal cupola at the top make for a stunning profile. The curved columns and archway are mimicked by a decorative entry door of the same shape. Artful landscaping complete with plentiful proud palm trees furthers the grandeur.

Above: Fondly referred to as the Leisure Room, this great room is a place you’d never want to leave. A show-stopping ceiling by Christine Adele Arts captures the movement of the Gulf with undulating lines, and features a luminescent glow achieved by a multi-layered faux finish adorned by flaked pieces of natural mica. The sofa by A. Rudin is upholstered in a toffee-colored weave by Pollack & Associates and is backed by a modern ebony console from Donghia and soft poufs from Studio A. The breakfast area includes a Baker glass table atop a pedestal base finished in white gold. Above it, the Hudson Mother steel chain chandelier shimmers, perfectly complementing the custom seed cloud fixture glittering with crystal buds hung at various lengths. The fireplace detail consists of a Glazzio brown shell mosaic and a custom mantel designed by Collins & DuPont.

Above Top: The hallway is a funhouse of custom-beveled mirrored columns. A play of dark and light is achieved by deep wood flooring contrasted with walls painted in a lighter shade. “The original stairs were a closed-up radius that we converted to an open tread and riser, so the daylight comes through,” says Guzman. The dramatic lighting includes LED bounced off the ceiling, and sparkling On the Rocks wall sconces from Boyd Lighting. Above Bottom: The formal living room boasts an upholstered wall of individually-made squares of Donghia lilac suede custom-fabricated in Italy. A luxurious Donghia sofa is wrapped in a spot-patterned Sahco fabric. A pair of lounge chairs by Thomas Pheasant for Baker is upholstered in Romo’s Veta fabric, while the third chair is from Christopher Guy. Marc Phillips’ Satinwood area rug in ivory grounds the lavish space. The shimmer suede iridescent ceiling finish and iridescent wax over micaencrusted custom wall finish are by Christine Adele Arts. www.HomeAndDesign.net

Above: The dining room is appointed with several showpieces including an exciting textural wool and silk rug called Occulation from Tai Ping, a Christine Adele Arts custom mica-encrusted wall finish, and a ceiling decoratively accented by a rectangle of applied plaster with an intricate, lacey trellis effect. Marge Carson’s glossy dining table is flanked with chairs by the same maker, with backs upholstered in Cassaro’s Java faux leather and trimmed with silver nailheads. Donghia Lido drapes fashion the doors and windows, and a Boyd chandelier drips crystal from above for a dazzling, liquid effect.

Above: If you’re going for glamour, why stop at the kitchen? The cabinetry is custom stained rift cut walnut, polished to a high gloss, crafted by Thomas Riley Artisans’ Guild, while the backsplash flaunts glass mosaic tile in mushroom tones. The countertops along the perimeter are fabricated with sleek Lumix Quartzite, but softened at the edges to mirror the curvaceous ceiling niche treated with faux gold and sprinkled with applied mica for extra shine. Truly the brass ring, the Prometheus light fixture was custom-made by Siglo Moderno. Cylindrical columns are treated with mother-of-pearl Aphrodite tiles, and even the Grizzel & Mann counter stools shimmer with Romo’s Zinc fabric. www.HomeAndDesign.net

Guzman strategized the enhancements with intensity and vigor. “The client had an existing plan on the beach, but they needed more space,” he explains. “We did some really cool curved windows, pushing the glass to the absolute edge allowing for uninterrupted sunset views 365 days a year.” He also expanded the great room, opening-up the floor plan for a seamless flow. “Now you can see across the whole house, so it doesn’t feel confining,” adds Guzman. Also, to accommodate an extended family with lots of grandkids, the lanai needed to be larger. “It was broken up and discombobulated, so we made it into something truer.” u

Below: A posh master bath showcases contemporary custom cabinetry of maple with a painted satin sheen, designed by Collins & DuPont. The gleaming countertops and tub surround are made with precious stone from Antolini. The Domus Modena floor tiles are inset with Atlantico mosaic accents. Ritzy shaped cornices feature a smoked quartz animal print by Romo and beaded rope trim from Osborne & Little. A six-arm chandelier with pewter silk shades is from coveted Italian lighting brand Porta Romana. The wall and ceiling are custom finished by Christine Adele Arts in iridescent glazed silver.

The master bedroom is elegant and gilded, from the custom Moneta light fixture—featuring seeded glass diffusers of tobacco, amber, and clear glass—to the topaz waves, courtesy of Fabricut, inset into the window cornices. Pearlized silver foil walls with textured wax overlay by Christine Adele Arts continues the theme of precious metal, as does the Allan Knight chaise swathed in Romo’s reflective Rowell putty-colored fabric. A Colombostile bed is custom-finished and decorated with an assortment of sumptuous pillows as well as a chic fauxfur throw. The artwork, entitled Flow from CHC Art, and Tai Ping’s Hemisphere silk rug, serve to tie the look together.

The remodel of the front elevation consisted of designing and engineering a façade to “fit like a jacket over the front of the home” according to Walter. PBS Contractors removed the precast Tuscan elements and columns. The taller more linear front elevation creates a clean, contemporary exterior to better reflect the home’s interior redesign.

www.HomeAndDesign.net

I

It wasn’t a simple wave of a wand, but rather an extensive remodel of this home in Naples’ Grey Oaks community, that resulted in nothing short of a fairytale ending. After 22 years, the owners were looking for a new forever home. After searching across Naples, they concluded they should remain in their favored location, surrounded by friends and neighbors. They called upon Laurie Walter of Cinnabar Design to do her magic, helping them to visualize the transformation of their dated Mediterranean estate home. u

Above: The show-stopping glass-walled wine room is the star of the remodel. Situated where the kitchen once stood, the clients’ own warrior soldier statue is flanked by Vintage View labelforward wine racks. The opposite side of the solid wall houses the great room TV in the new open concept design. Right: Light, bright contemporary glass-inlayed doors and a modern LED backlit suspendedpanel ceiling design replace the dark and dated foyer, setting an open and welcoming tone upon arrival. American Naturals Tumbleweed porcelain tile in 8-by-48-inch planks is used throughout the first floor. Simple paint and trim create a niche for contemporary art and a sleek Made Goods console.

The updated window-wall by Andersen Windows floods the room with natural light. A quartet of Thayer Coggin club chairs atop a hand knotted area rug creates a perfect conversation space for cocktails with arriving guests.

BEFORE “I believe we checked off every box on their wish list and incorporated things that they never even dreamed of. As interior design professionals that is our job, to interpret the clients’ wishes, their greatest desires that sometimes they don’t even know they have,” explains Walter. Walter walked the original home with PBS Contractors, embarking on a renovation that included a complete demolition and expansion on the first floor and outdoor living area, and renovation of both the first and second floor living spaces. Together, the tested team of PBS Contractors’ dedicated project superintendent Howard Thompson, and Cinnabar Designs’ Walter and design associate Kelly Sereghy, made the magic happen. u

“We look for the clients’ aspiration and a dream. This client communicated well what they were looking for and Cinnabar Design heard what they were saying and beautifully interpreted it; the PBS team was able to execute that collective vision into a home the client is very, very proud of,” says PBS Contractors CEO Russell Budd. u

The 8,000-square-foot, 6-bedroom home on a lovely Naples lake benefitted from cosmetic touches like a color change to a darker espresso stain for the wood components, as well as the addition of new plantation shutters on the Andersen windows, an upper balcony, and the widening of the redone woodclad front porch columns.

CUSTOM DESIGN TRANSFORMS A HOUSE INTO A HOME www.HomeAndDesign.net

The artistry of interior designer Lisa Ficarra and design associate Kealy Stapleton, combined with the creativity of architect Falconer Jones III brought out even more of the stunning beauty of this recently remodeled Naples home. The homeowners, a couple hailing from the cold climes of upstate New York, were interested in enjoying the warm weather as soon as possible and didn’t want to wait to build their residence from scratch. But they were also very interested in transforming any existing house into their own—one that reflects their shared informed and excellent taste in contemporary design. u

Below: Holding pride of place in what was formerly just an entry foyer, is the wood and glass stairway. Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring European White Oak 12-inch wide planks with lengths reaching up to 10 feet were provided and installed by Naples Flooring Company throughout the home, complementing the stair treads. The custom bar features mahogany panels fronting the bar and on the wall behind. Donghia bar stools with cut velvet cushions provide comfortable seating for guests in this new entertaining space. Right: A trio of custom painted abstract landscapes by local artists Eric and Jessica Crabtree of Art 41, who provided most of the major art in the home, sets the soothing color palette for the living room. The Century sofa is upholstered in a Kraft texturized linen. Cut velvet covers the two matching Berman Rosetti chairs and a Kravet armchair provides additional seating. The cunning Wendell Castle lacquer with wood veneer coffee table rests atop a custom rug from Designers’ Rug Center. Blown Murano glass Donghia lamps top the whitewashed oak end tables from the Robert James Collection. The freestanding carved wood sculpture is from The Phillips Collection.

Enter the design team of Ficarra and Stapleton from Ficarra Design Associates, who worked very closely with the couple designing a home that is unique and truly reflects the couples’ dynamic lifestyle. “We went shopping for each piece, even arranging field trips to the east coast,” says Stapleton. “We also designed custom furniture and accessories for them as I always want our clients to have unique furnishings. We never want their home to look like a furniture showroom,” explains Ficarra. “Every piece should have a story,” adds Stapleton. “With these clients, who have wonderful design taste, searching out the perfect furnishings and finishes was exciting and great fun,” says Ficarra. Architect Falconer Jones originally designed the house, built by Anthony Del Duca, but confesses he likes the remodeled version even better. “The bones of this home were gorgeous, but as it was built as a model to be sold, the design was necessarily a bit generic,” says Jones. He was delighted to be able to add more visual interest in this remodel. “By adding shutters, the tone of the woodwork changed. The columns were widened on the bottom floor, which helped balance the wood columns added upstairs. We even used smaller profile Italian tile, clay-fired, to look like shake shingles on the roof,” he explained. “All of these changes were minor, but impactful.” u

Ficarra and Stapleton worked with Jones on the interior as well. “Creating a new design for the stairway, at an entirely different pitch, opened up the entry foyer for entertaining,” Jones says. “And creating a wall of glass at one of the home’s axes brought in even more light to the interior.” Jones continued, “I am delighted I got to know the clients well and personalize the home just for them.” Stapleton and Ficarra agree, adding, “These were one-of-a-kind clients, and we wanted them to have a home that is as unique and special as they are.” n

The freestanding Art Deco-inspired console is by Swaim and artwork is by Art 41. Right: The great room wall is faux finished with millwork and wood paneling added to the adjacent columns to frame a large abstract work from Art 41. Dark stained sliders form a dramatic background for the Theodore Alexander sectional, covered in an oatmeal chenille fabric by Kravet, and the two Baker Furniture bucket chairs with striated patterned upholstery. When you find the perfect community with outstanding amenities and a dynamic lifestyle, you never want to leave. That is the case for the owners of this new two-story estate home at Miromar Lakes Beach & Golf Club. With an expanding family of grown children, new spouses, and new grandchildren coming to visit, the couple felt they had outgrown their original Miromar Lakes’ home. They selected a waterfront homesite a few streets away in the community’s exclusive Sorrento enclave to build a larger family-focused retreat. “The clients requested a comfortable, spacious home that accommodated them seasonally, and allowed family and friends privacy while visiting,” says architect John Cooney of Stofft Cooney Architects, adding, “They assembled a great design team and Gulfshore Homes executed a wonderful, traditional home that they will enjoy for many years.” u

Two nailhead trimmed ivory sofas and a pair of metallic finish whimsical polka dot upholstered chairs sit nearest the fireplace atop an area rug from Designers’ Rug Center. The two spaces are connected by matching Visual Comfort dual-caged polished nickel lantern fixtures from Lighting First suspended from the beamed ceiling. The foyer artwork from a New England gallery is positioned above a custom-designed Century Furniture Bridgeton credenza.

Gulfshore Homes, a preferred builder at Miromar Lakes, wholeheartedly embraced the opportunity to work closely with the owners, strategizing elements of design and lifestyle to deliver a home of quality, comfort, and livability. “This is a family home; it was fun to build. We had to take into consideration the kids, grandkids, what the family growth would be, and how they would live in this house. It was a team effort; we were involved in every aspect of it, sketching things up on the way, taking the owner’s ideas and putting them on paper and turning it into reality,” says Gulfshore Homes director of construction Matt Schull. Interior designer Kristin Lyons also consulted on such things as tile layout, ceiling details, and the overall cohesiveness of the owner’s choices for lighting, interior paint, and tile. “Kristin was great to bounce ideas off of and get confirmation that our choices were all tying together,” says the owner. u

Having her by my side was immeasurable. Working closely with her was a home run!” Gulfshore Homes’ President Steve Watt notes that the company’s personalized commitment and on-site attention is a hallmark of Gulfshore Homes reputation, “Our team’s experience and attention coupled with the trust, cooperation, and great decisions from the owners, made this a very memorable project.” And ultimately transformed the owners’ ideas into a home that truly grants their waterfront wishes. n

The owners toured many homes and models to find an interior look they loved. After identifying several they admired, all coincidentally done by the team of Charlie Hansen and Rebekah Errett-Pikosky of Clive Daniel Home, their decision was made. “Though we work as a team,” says Hansen, “we are able to bring different design aesthetics to the project, so we added the softness, but still with a bit of an edge.” u Above: MTI Baths Elise tub with stand-alone faucet by Rohl, available at Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery, holds pride of place in front of the large master bath widows framing an ancient banyan tree. The redesign of this once dated formal living room creates a modern, functional great room space. Ceiling detail gives the room a sense of place, and delineates the dining area, foyer, and living spaces. The foyer, previously decorated with a faux column and arch configuration, now combines three of Provost’s favorite product tools in its design: wood paneling, interesting lighting, and dimensioned wall applications. “With a strong connection between the walls and the ceiling, it is like entering a futuristic half tunnel that blasts open on one side to the larger environment of the living and dining spaces, says Provost. Lighting on the shaped gypsum panels can be dimmed to suit the occasion.

T

The owners of this once Mediterranean home in Bonita Springs’ Bonita Bay did not see eye-to-eye on the original aesthetic and set out to renovate the space to better please both the owners. They took the first step toward a daring redesign at Home & Design Magazine’s Luxury Home Show where they met exhibitor and award-winning principal designer and CEO Jenny Provos, of K2 Design Group. u

“They liked that we focus on fearless design. Initially they brought me in to look at the kitchen, but you can imagine, if a kitchen is such that the owners want to make a major change then there are likely to be some other issues with the house. Ultimately we left very little untouched,” explains Provost of the reimagining of the home’s entire interior. Provost drew upon her 25 years of experience as an architectural designer to envision a modern environment with clean lines and some surprising elements and design details. “In order to do a proper job on their kitchen, I felt that some surgery was required. The kitchen was an odd shape, so we morphed an underused closet into the kitchen to increase the size and eliminate a formerly 45-degree angled wall and create a modern 90-degree corner,” explains Provost. Unforeseen problems in the existing construction also required Provost to figure out a way to cleverly camouflage issues in the kitchen ceiling. “I thought I would do a lot of different planes and stack them and it would be fun and focal and give dimension to a pretty flat room… and it did!” says Provost. “I think the ceiling detail makes the room.” u Left: The kitchen redesign included reshaping the outer walls to a 90-degree angle. Provost created a stacked-plane ceiling detail to enliven the space and hide structural obstacles. The contemporary pastels of Amy Donaldson’s art inspired the backsplash. “I did a sketch and sent it to the mosaic tile company and they came back with a rendering of what it could look like, and we chose all of the tiles. It is an active process going back and forth to get it just right. These are hand-cut glass tiles with shine and dimension— it is really a work of art.” K2 Kitchens installed perimeter Irpinia white-gloss lacquer cabinets with a Cambria Oakmoor countertop. Keeping the couple’s visiting grandchildren in mind, Provost used an exceedingly durable low pressure laminate wood on the island with low-profile Airnova white leather barstools. A Sonneman linear fixture illuminates the dynamic space.

Provost presented the owners with a focal piece of art by Amy Donaldson for the kitchen space. Taking it one innovative step further, she suggested “painting” the kitchen backsplash with a custom mosaic inspired by the art. “I wanted to do something unique, invented for these clients in the kitchen area. I thought what if I take inspiration from the art and throw it all over the kitchen? So I did’,” laughs Provost. Provost used color and movement in the mosaic cut glass tile to have the painting seemingly overflow into the kitchen. Excited by the progress in the kitchen, the owners started talking about the potential of removing columns in the dining room. “We got the original construction plans and looked inside the walls and found out that we could remove the columns, then of course we couldn’t leave the ceiling there, one thing touches another thing… and so on,” recalls Provost. The result is a cohesive, modern interior space with striking detail that leaves no hint of its former over-the-top faux-painted Mediterranean style, now “picture perfect” to the owners who definitively see eye-to-eye on the daring redesign. n

Right: The built-in in the family room designed and built by K2 is clad in wood panels, highgloss lacquered cabinets, and solid surface non-combustible material around the Napolean gas fireplace. A pair of upholstered chairs by American Leather with a wink back to ’50s and ’60s contemporary styling are a favorite of Provost’s. Two highly-adjustable recliners are also American Leather. Fully-pocketing sliding doors provide a seamless connection to the outdoor living areas.

This gives some rhythm and movement to an otherwise static form,” explains Provost. A metal sculpture by Tyler Stinson modernizes the foyer view. The living area is anchored by an Emma Gardner Design area rug and the contemporary “Rock Around the Universe I” acrylic on canvas by artist Mary Ann Flynn Fouse, exclusively from The Sweet Art Gallery. Situated on the water in Naples’ Venetian Village, this home is a new interpretation of a Mediterranean Villa. Devoid of arches, with modern windows and garage doors, the home has a decidedly more contemporary appeal.

This home was not a case of love at first sight for homeowners Bob and Virginia Forgét. They, like most, had the expectation that a waterfront home in Naples would allow them to spend time enjoying the view of blue water and passing boats. That wasn’t the case. “When we first saw the house, we thought how odd it was we couldn’t see much of the water, even though the property was on Venetian Bay,” explains Bob. “But we knew right away we could remodel the property, open it up to the water, and adapt it to our lifestyle,” adds Virginia. To accomplish that task, the couple hired architect John Cooney of Stofft Cooney Architects and builder Mark Nourse to be their partners in the project. “It turns out that the house was dilapidated and we ended up reducing the existing structure down to just a concrete shell and roof trusses,” says Cooney. In keeping with the overall ambiance of Venetian Village, Cooney designed a home that is a new interpretation of a Mediterranean villa. By adding subtle and dramatic modern elements like louvers, a glass entry and garage door, and a front fountain, Cooney elevated the home to a new level. u

Armed with Cooney’s extremely detailed plans, Nourse used his knowledge of local vendors and contractors, hard-won over 40 years, to put together a crack team to work on the home. “Whenever we ran into a challenge, we found our way through,” says Nourse. “I am old school and often do things myself to get it done right. I live by the motto, ‘Where there’s a will, there’s a way.’” u

Virginia herself handled the interior design of the home. Her creativity shines through to such a degree she has been offered jobs by local design firms, though she calls herself only “a talented amateur.” Her design scheme for the couple’s Naples restaurant, The Warehouse, even won a coveted Sand Dollar Award. “Working with John and Mark was just phenomenal,” she says. “Both of them were very hands-on and in constant contact with us,” adds Bob. Virginia sums it up, “They helped us reveal that this house was really a diamond in the rough.” n

Stock Custom Homes’ two-story row houses on Old Naples’ 6th Street South are each impeccably furnished for spacious, contemporary living in the heart of downtown. Located just a few blocks from the highly desirable 5th Avenue shopping and dining district, and a short stroll to the sandy shores of the Gulf of Mexico, the trio of homes offers nostalgic Naples Cottage charm. “The crispness of the exteriors exudes the cottagey feel, where you are just a hop, skip, and a jump from the beach, yet you are in the elegant part of Naples as well. It is a real coastal home that embraces the elegance of Naples with the proximity to the sea,” says Stock Development Vice President of Sales and Marketing Claudine Leger-Wetzel. The overall design reflects the signature Florida-style of Matt Kragh of MHK Architecture & Planning. The team refers to them as shotgun houses—long and narrow—with each 3,800-square-foot home being just 35 feet wide. The design masterfully incorporates a first floor master suite, living room, and dining room, with an additional two bedrooms, loft, bonus room, and guest cabana on the second floor. The seamless indoor-outdoor connection is completed by landscape architect Christian Andrea’s designs. “Naples is all about outdoor living so we put as much glass as we could in the living, dining, and kitchen areas to bring the outside in; you don’t feel like you’re in a narrow home when you’re in those spaces,” says Steven Jallad, MHK Architecture & Planning director of residential design. “We moved the master suite to the front of the house, allowing those spaces to all open to the pool and outdoor living.” The interiors, each executed by a different design firm, present potential buyers with unique styles, carefully selected details, background finishes, and furnishings. “Our goal was to work with what we consider three of the area’s top design firms and to give them the same blueprints but have a different look and feel in each house. We met with them to make sure there wasn’t duplication of materials or design because we all know each of us lives a little bit differently,” explains Leger-Wetzel. “There is something for every buyer.” The cottages harken back to Old Florida, when Naples was a small town and arriving travelers meandered along a few blocks of shops and sidewalk cafes, soaking in the sun and picturesque way of life. Each of the three is offered for sale, fully furnished, complete with a lifestyle ready to savor and enjoy. n

CINNABAR DESIGN The Hamptons-style design of the southernmost row home was a synergistic collaboration by the entire Cinnabar Design team comprised of President Diana Hall, President, CEO Laurie Walter, and interior designer Elizabeth Manchego. What was Cinnabar Design trying to accomplish with the design? A home that Stock could sell effortlessly & quickly! We want 9 out of 10 people to walk in and say, “I could live here.” What is a favorite part of the project? The overall relaxed feeling you get when entering the home. You are greeted by shiplap walls, a custom railing, and a polished-nickel light fixture. Vintage 1953 black-and-white photos add ambience to the cozy space. Natural elements in the living area, such as the large piece of driftwood high above the sofa, add texture. The juxtaposition of the contemporary Lucite cocktail table with the petrified wood console table also adds interest. How did the location influence the team’s design? Being so close to the beach and a walk to Fifth Avenue, we wanted to create a transitional coastal feeling. Although the home has a “beachy” flair, we wanted to be sure to keep a level of sophistication in line with the price point of the home. What was the inspiration? We were inspired by South Hampton. The coastal design aesthetic flows throughout the entire home incorporating

natural

elements—linens,

cottons,

grasscloth, and rattan. This home would certainly appeal to an affluent resident with a family. Special guests can escape to a private sanctuary, the cabana suite which we completed with a built-in banquette for dining/lounging, and a wet bar.

BAY DESIGN STORE The owners of this charming home in Pelican Bay hired interior designer Jill Kersey of Bay Design Store to bring their vision to life after meeting her during a visit to the store. The family, who also has a beach house on the Jersey Shore, wanted a coastal cottage, bright and inviting yet relaxed. “They envisioned vibrant blues and whites, but wanted to mix in a third accent color which is where the apple green came in,” describes Kersey. “The mixture of blues and greens are so complementary of each other and exude a happy energy.” The entire home was gutted, and the floorplan reimagined, providing an abundance of natural light and a bright and airy base from which to work. Brilliant white Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace paint throughout works well with custom built-in features and shiplap accents. The space is grounded in a balance of textural elements, including wickers, rattans, and grass cloths. Woven wood window shades draped with custom side panels coordinate with the sofa’s accent pillows. “A tasteful infusion of coastal and sea life accents was important to the homeowners,” explains Kersey. This was achieved through the selection of unique design elements and accessories including a coral and glass chandelier in the dining room, a brushed silver blue marlin mounted in the built-in of the family’s great room, and a whimsical palm leaf wallpaper in the master bedroom. Calusa Bay Design gutted the entire unit, first relocating the air conditioners, plumbing, and several walls. The designer selected all new backgrounds including cabinetry, tile, millwork, flooring, and countertops before completely furnishing and accessorizing the home. The end result delivers the clients’ desire for a transitional look with stunning pops of color in an open concept design. Courtesy of Calusa Bay Design, www.calusabaynaples.com

CATHLEEN B. SWIFT This custom interior design project involved a full remodel to update this Naples condominium. The designer selected a shoreline color palette of neutral tones with splashes of aqua and green. The kitchen and bathroom were complete with neutral tones of gray, taupe, beige, and white. A feature shiplap wall creates a distinct focal point in the master retreat. Cathleen Swift oversaw the design and fabrication of custom-made furnishings for the master bedroom to allow for a free-flowing design and a fresh modern look. New furnishings and rugs were used throughout the space to complete the coastal design. Courtesy of Cathleen B. Swift Interior Design, www.cathleenswiftdesign.com 332

BUILDERS GLASS A fresh new look was in order for this Quail Woods estate, and the owners turned to Builders Glass for the custom glass and mirror work. The client’s fearless approach to design and color created a most striking design aesthetic. Upon entering the residence, guests are greeted by the oversized, and over-the-top, antique mirror wall feature in the dining room. The expansive master suite was appointed with an oversized glass barn door, leading into the star of the show—the

DREAMWORKS REMODELING Dreamworks Remodeling created a beautiful redesign of this kitchen located in Grey Oaks. Replacing the outdated brown cabinetry with a stunning frosty-white applied moulding door and a pewter glaze accent adds a subtle elegance to the room. Dreamworks Remodeling eliminated some of the room’s former angles to simplify the lines and center the kitchen. Under cabinet outlets allow the eye to see the full effect of the gorgeous veins running through the Pompeii Quartz countertop into the full-height backsplash. LED under and interior cabinet lighting creates an inviting ambiance that makes one feel right at home. Other custom features include a paneled Sub-Zero built-in refrigerator, paneled dishwasher, paneled beverage chiller, and hidden in-drawer power outlets to charge devices out of sight. Terrazzo countertops with aqua glass are the finishing touch to make this a fun and fabulous entertaining space. Billiards, theatre seating, a sit-down bar for 7-plus, and a game table create four distinct areas in the over-the-top bonus room.
