Tr ansitional Elegance Somewhere between traditional and contemporary lies a design choice that is actually the best of both worlds and one of the most popular with today’s stylesavvy homeowner. It is called ‘Transitional’ and it borrows the shapes, textures, and colors from both the classic and the modern. It is quintessentially ‘right now’. And this 4,389-square-foot home in Moraya Bay is a stunning example of transitional done right. According to the developer, the builder, and the craftsmen on the project, Wendy Berry, President of W Designs, led the creative process with an incredible design vision. She and her talented team masterfully attended to every detail from the clean lines of the custom designed moldings to the multiple, yet complementary, finishes of all the walnut used throughout the home. Berry even orchestrated the grain direction in each panel of wood flooring in the foyer in order to direct one’s eye down the desired path. This attention to detail is what Berry is known for, and she was fortunate to have carte blanche to realize her vision. “I wanted to use texture, not color per se, to create layers of interest and reflection,” explains Berry. “The fabrics and treatments I used throughout the home incorporate linens, grass cloth, ultra suede, natural fibers, and stacked mother of pearl to vary the layers of textures throughout. Although the foundation is white and cream, I used these textures and varying finishes of dark wood to bring it ‘back to the light’. Although we used many textures and shades of darker wood finishes, we kept a white and cream foundation to always bring it back to a light palette,” concludes Berry.
The grand salon is an open plan and incorporates a serene living room grouping adjacent to a custom wine bar and sitting lounge. Sophisticated custom sofas—a contemporary spin on a classic Chesterfield style—feature deep, flat, tufted arm details, a very current trend in upholstered seating. The ‘Architect’ lamps from Ralph Lauren Home are a W Design favorite. Home & Design

Many of Berry’s ideas were realized by the talented craftsmen at Hyland Cabinetry. A Thomas Riley Company, Hyland is responsible for the engineering, fabrication, finish, and installation of all the built-in woodworking on this home. Hyland President Chris Hylemon was keen on providing the highest level of quality throughout. We used the best materials and design treatments, like touch-latch, hardware-free doors on the custom built-in cabinets and pocket pivot doors on the master bathroom tub surround, as well as on paneling, trim details, and moldings,” says Hylemon. “The bleached and open grain, distressed wood finishes really add style to all the millwork. Berry and her team worked very closely with us to perfect every detail right from the design phase through to completion.”

Moraya Bay is truly a luxury lifestyle. It is a perceived idea that in any high-rise the penthouse signifies the premier residence. But at Moraya Bay, the Panorama floor plan creates a “penthouse” with every unit. According to Marketing Director Inga Wilson, “Whether you are on the 3rd floor or the 10th floor, the architectural plan offers stunning panoramic views of the Gulf. With the curved lanai it offers a 180-degree view of the sunrise to sunset, right outside your floor to ceiling windows. With its vast open windows this model has showcased how warm and inviting a large spacious residence can be.” The beachy tones of the serene foyer are established the moment you enter the home via your own private elevator. A neutral Sisal area rug banded in suede frames the latte cream color palette and anchors the room quite skillfully. “I love how these Ralph Lauren lamps punctuate the room,” says Berry. I like rooms that are balanced, not contrived. The architectural details of the moldings, the built-in cabinetry and millwork by Hyland, and the fabrics and colors we chose, all layer together harmoniously,” describes Berry. The lounge is defined by Berry’s custom designed wall panels that are an artful assembly of varying depths and sizes of solid natural walnut blocks. The banquet is covered in a textured linen weave that has the texture and dimension of raffia. A pair of striped club chairs establish a turquoise and teal color accent picked up in the colorful banquet pillows. This blue family of tones is carried into the kitchen as well, with a more muted version of grey-blue custom painted cabinets. The main counter is a waterfall of 2.5” block of granite named Madreaperola that is surprisingly not marble and features a ‘leathered’ finish. The matte finish, mosaic glass backsplash completes this casual organic feel that combines the creams and charcoal with a hint of warm amber.

The master bedroom features stunning, oyster colored, ultra-suede, upholstered walls that envelope the room with soft textured elegance. Behind the 4-poster bed, the padded suede is installed in 2 x 3’ panels that are bordered by brushed nickel nail heads. This contemporary element adds an edgy sophistication and a focal point in the room’s design. Opposite the bed is the custom walnut built-in wall unit featuring antique bronze metallic door pulls for the perfect accent and mixture of metals. The master bathroom is a luxurious suite. It has a continuous floor without any curb and is created with broken pieces of onyx which have the feeling of smooth shells on a beach. This is complimented by the onyx subway tile that climbs ups the feature wall behind the 4” thick granite slab bench. The opposite walls are covered in slabs of granite named Costa Oro granite and is repeated on the vanity counters between the custom, walnut, shadow box mirrors and walnut slab front cabinetry crafted by Hyland. These vanities frame the opening of a luxurious walk-in closet. The two guest bedrooms are quiet chic and resemble the experience of a boutique hotel in Manhattan. The smaller of the two is a white-on-white layered and textured room that is instantly calming when you enter. It showcases a custom upholstered sleigh bed made from a beautiful embroidered linen and an elegant pair of polished nickel lamps perched on white lacquer night tables.

The larger bedroom, or 2nd master, is alive with subtle gray/ lavender walls and an applied molding painted white. Another wall changes textures to a rich grass cloth mimicking the same tone. “Purple is one of my favorite colors but can be overwhelming when used in design. The trick is layering various shades of the color, then grounding it with a soft foundation of creams. In this case, we anchored all of these shades with an aged gold finish on all of the metals and custom finish on the wood bed frame,” describes Berry. The transitional style is one of today’s most popular, and it’s easy to see why at this stunning Moraya Bay residence. These design choices let you know you’re in Southwest Florida, but still provide that bit of continental chic you might find in the finest coastal destinations in the country.
