Our dedicated and knowledgeable staff are here to help you to bring your ideas to life...

We offer support to fabricators, designers, cabinetmakers, builders, architects, and contractors in selecting stone for their projects with the most popular value stone to rare exotic.

M

att Ozturk, president of The Granite Place, knows Southwest Floridians have impeccable taste. He travels the world — Italy, Brazil, India, Turkey and Spain — in search of the best quality natural stone available. That commitment to quality shines through the moment you walk through the showroom door. With an inventory of more than 200 colors, the showroom is like an art gallery of stones ranging from classic Carrera marble to bold Blue Bahia granite. Each stone is top quality, from basics to truly breathtaking exotics with vivid color patterns and motion. In fact, the Granite Place’s selection is so unique that customers fly in from out of state — even out of country — to select exotics that cannot be found anywhere else! Ozturk believes that a key to success is to personally inspect and hand select the stone he imports. He searches for balanced pattern and movement, popular stones that are “of the moment,” rare finds, and quality. Area fabricators, designers, builders, contractors and cabinet makers rely on The Granite Place to provide the products their own clients demand and expect. To ensure only the highest quality is delivered, the well-trained staff at the Granite Place only utilizes stones that are free of fissures and cracks to avoid problems during fabrication. Since opening its doors in 2005, this small family business has grown every year. The Granite Place now operates in two locations — Sarasota and North Port. Both locations have built their success and reputation on unrivaled customer service and the best selection of stone anywhere in the region. To see all that The Granite Place has to offer, visit the Sarasota showroom at 2328 N Washington Blvd., or view the full inventory online at thegraniteplace.net.

Impressive upon arrival, the home’s entry hints at what is to be revealed inside. Cypress wood is used in protected outdoor areas such as the ceiling of the porte-cochere with Mahogany in the door and interior details. The team worked to source indigenous woods and natural stones, seen on the columns and entryway. Marble cladding is from Oracle Flooring & Design. The coastal contemporary-style home encompasses four bedroom suites, six baths, and a ten-car garage.

Water is the common element distinguishing both the setting and architecture of this peninsular estate on Sarasota’s desirable Siesta Key. The owners, a world-class sport fishing couple, are connected to the water in every room of the expansive island-style sanctuary. “Quite often in Balinese architecture you will find that the water comes right up to the home on all sides. The back of this home which addressees the bay, is all about the connection to the water. u

There are many natural elements incorporated, with linens and softer fabrics in a modern coastal palette of beautiful blues, teals, grays and white. It was necessary for the home to feel appropriate to its location,” says Santayana.

“Through our knowledge of interior spaces and architecture we were able to fine tune key interior elements such as the dual islands in the kitchen and a freestanding fireplace which became the spine of the home. We had a respect for the architecture and worked hard to transform the spatial qualities through the use of proportion, function, and materiality,” explains Alvarez. In addition to the complex interior detailing, builder Saba was presented with executing many outdoor “firsts.” Oswald integrated many ideas from the owners’ travels including a Koi pond along the entire back edge of the home, and a fire pit sunken into the infinity edge pool. Those collaborative ideas inspired creative solutions according to Saba, resulting in a one-of-a-kind idyllic island retreat. “Our niche is the challenging house that has the elements that require orchestration of the team and finding options that can make it better,” Saba explains. “Our motto is ‘there is nothing that is impossible’—instead we work on finding the solutions— that’s the fun part.” n

CLIFFORD M. SCHOLZ ARCHITECTS REFINING THE FIRM

T

he award-winning coastal architectural firm of Clifford M. Scholz Architects is refining its structure with the addition of two new partners. Founder and lead architect Clifford Scholz is this year marking 40 years as a licensed

architect and shows no signs of slowing down. “I looked for how I can perpetuate the ability to do good design work and ultimately keep our clients happy. In my estimation the addition of two handpicked partners is a way for the firm to get even better, and continue doing great design work. Being responsible to the community and to our environment, and keeping our clients very satisfied,” explains Scholz of the firms’ new structure. Colorado architect Rick Oswald, founder of Oz Planning & Design in Sarasota, joins CMSA as partner and senior vice president. Scholz met and admired Oswald a decade ago and has since followed his career. “When Rick began his own design firm I started noticing the projects he was doing and the clients he had and I thought this could be the right person to come in at a senior level and work with me at CMSA. We joint-ventured on several projects and it has exceeded my expectations.” Oswald adds, “When the opportunity arose to talk about putting our talents together it just seemed that there was a lot of synergy there that it makes sense. We are on the same page in our beliefs about architecture and our community and continuing with exceptionally high standards.” In addition, Scholz announced four-year CMSA employee, and recently registered Florida architect Daniel Shaffer is being made partner and vice president, just as Scholz’ mentor did for him 35 years ago. “I feel honored and privileged to work with two of Sarasota’s finest architects,” says Shaffer. “It was always a goal of mine to be a licensed architect before the age of 30, but I never thought I’d be a partner at this age as well. I look forward to growing as a young architect and making a difference in the community.” The CMSA team of design professionals specializes in the areas of luxury residences, private golf and country clubs, corporate properties, and challenging renovations. Founded in 1992, CMSA has since continued setting an everlasting architectural benchmark in Southwest Florida. 44

This stunning Georgian-style estate home is set upon a wide estate lot with a gracious paver motor court. “The directive that I gave to myself was to make the exterior of the house impressive yet draw people into it, explains architect Clifford Scholz. Three arches at the entryway are a symbol of invitation seen in Palladian architecture. A light-filled modified floorplan is revealed upon entering the home.

Sarasota Architectural Woodworking designed deep-gray upper cabinets with a lighter finish on the islands, complemented by the horizontally striped gray and white tile backsplash from Fisher Tile. The wall cabinets feature a concealed valance with low voltage, LED strip lights and mullion glass doors to add architectural interest. Oceanic blue leather is used for contrast against the blonde cerused-wood of the Thomas O’Brien Niles counter stools. A quartet of chandeliers illuminates and defines the space.

Architect Clifford Scholz of Clifford M Scholz Architects and custom home builder Ricky Perrone of Perrone Construction share a 30-year relationship, and had the common vision to design and build a residence with timeless craftsmanship and elegance. “I refer to this home’s particular style as modern classicism,” explains Scholz. It is revisiting forms and shapes and proportions but with a modern approach to integrate our client’s lifestyles, wants, needs, and desires into the classical structure.” Situated on a large estate lot in The Concession in Bradenton, the five-bedroom, nearly 6,800-square-foot home makes extensive use of glass to integrate with the large outdoor living areas—something Scholz notes would not have been part of an old Georgian design. Builder Ricky Perrone says the home was intended to set the standard in the community’s exclusive Parkstone Terrace enclave. u

“Century Furniture is steeped in tradition and they do a wonderful job of adjusting to the industry and the trends. The resulting interior is soft and inviting—it is formal but in a fun way. Both the home’s architectural design and the furnishings accomplish the same goal. They maintain the traditional elements while adapting them to today’s modern families,” explains Sadez. Perrone whole-heartedly agrees, adding, “Century’s team worked hard to create something special. It is a more traditional home design and what the Century creative team did was complement it with transitional interior finishes. The blending of the two is seamless and stunning.” n

WICKED SMART HOMES HIGH TECH PEACE OF MIND

T

he modern home involves sophisticated, and often complex technology to control and manage it. Wicked Smart Homes designs, engineers and installs integrated home technology solutions that allow various systems to work together in harmony to maximize comfort, convenience, and peace of mind. Their primary goals are to provide easy-to-use and reliable solutions to manage all technology within the home from anywhere in the world, with a focus on high quality service from conception through completion and ongoing support. “Our homeowners lead very active lifestyles and require the ability to monitor and control various aspects of their homes wherever they are in the world. We provide a simple and reliable way to monitor their home security and surveillance cameras, provide water detection alerts, and climate control. That’s vitally important when so many live in Florida part-time,” explains company president Mark Bolduc, adding, “We also maintain remote access to our clients’ homes, allowing us to take a proactive approach to service and support. We know if there’s an issue at the home before they do.” Wicked Smart Homes was launched in 2009 when it became clear that the Sarasota/ Bradenton area needed a smart home company that could provide cutting edge home technology solutions with an emphasis on customer service and satisfaction. The company now serves clients from Tampa to Naples, with the opening of its new Naples office. “Our longevity has allowed us to build key relationships with the top technology 60

brands,” Bolduc notes. “This allows Wicked Smart Homes to offer our customers the latest products many of which are available exclusively through our company in the southwest Florida area.” Building relationships is truly the keystone of the Wicked Smart philosophy which is one reason that 90% of their business comes from referrals from valued clients and industry professionals. Wicked Smart Homes regularly works with leading architects, builders and developers as a singular, expert resource for delivering the finest technology solutions to a new project, right from the outset. “We regularly lead projects large and small, overseeing every detail, from planning, through construction and completion. We typically join the process before “shovels hit the ground” to seamlessly integrate our products,” says Bolduc. “We also retrofit older homes and existing condos to bring them up to today’s technology standards. It all starts with a conversation, so we can listen and learn about our client’s lifestyle and technology needs.”

The Campbells’ four-bedroom home on Snell Isle is replete with windows to bring in light from all angles. Builder and designer Richard McGinnis of Modern Tampa Bay Homes says, “The house was not about size. It’s dramatic and at the same time intimate for their family. Modern Tampa Bay Homes prides itself on developing design solutions that inspire and conform to budget parameters and the owners’ objectives.”

The living room borders the pool deck and enjoys a long view of Smacks Bayou, an inlet of Tampa Bay. Two walls of sliding glass doors allow for panoramic views and easy access to the outdoors. Titan porcelain from Grespania Ceramica in Cemento, combined with carpet tiles by Flor, provide ease of cleaning and replacement. For warmth on those few cool Florida nights, a Vermont Castings Aura Linear fireplace is mounted on the wall. A family-friendly sectional and ottoman are paired with swivel chairs which turn easily to enjoy a sunset. Palms in two large dark gray planters add a touch of indoor greenery.

When California transplants Ryan and Amanda Campbell moved cross country to Florida’s Gulf Coast, they quickly felt at home. Ryan has family in Tampa, and Amanda fell in love with St. Petersburg. “It is a mini San Francisco, but more affordable,” Amanda says of her new city. The young couple discovered Modern Tampa Bay Homes, a design-build firm specializing in contemporary homes. Owner Richard McGinnis helped them to locate the perfect waterfront property on Snell Isle on which to build the house of their dreams. “We liked his style,” Ryan explains, “and he felt approachable.” These traits hold equal importance because the home’s clean, streamlined design is the result of a collaborative effort between the Campbells and McGinnis. “They were very involved through every step of the process, so the design effort was seamless,” McGinnis says. “We worked together very well as a team.” u

Below: The entryway, much like the house itself, makes a visual statement and feels welcoming at the same time. Ryan declares it his favorite space in the home because of its grand feel. McGinnis’s firm custom fabricated the ornamental staircase, using steel railings and wood treads. The functional steps create a beautiful night time silhouette when lighted. The two Shell Chairs by Hans J. Wegner complement the metal art prints by Laura Oxendine.

Above: McGinnis explains the thought behind the kitchen’s dual islands, “We wanted the kitchen to be as un-kitchen-like as possible.” The counters are Caesarstone Pure White and quartz Eggshell, and the custom cabinets from Londos Fine Cabinetry features hardware and veneers sourced from Italy and Germany. The effect is a European look without the high price. With the exception of the oven and induction cooktop, most of the Jenn-Air appliances from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery are concealed. Ikea’s Glenn bar stools offer an alternative to the dining room benches. The pull-down spray faucet is part of Delta’s Trinsic Kitchen collection, and the sink is from the Kohler Vault collection, both from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery.

72

The Campbells, who have many ideas and like to be hands-on, agree. “We get joy out of the design process,” Ryan says, adding that they are very opinionated. “I don’t think we could give up control.” The home reflects the couple’s desire for functional minimalism while taking full advantage of the surroundings. “We did everything we could to maximize the view to the water,” says McGinnis. That translates into many strategically placed windows and keeping visual clutter to a minimum. u

Above: The dining area discreetly serves as a convenient place for family meals as well as a game room, thanks to the convertible dining table. The Fusion Table’s removable surface covers a pool table and all its accessories. The benches tuck completely underneath so as not to interfere with players. The creative couple pays homage to their new city by photographing local graffiti, tinting and cropping the pictures in an unusual way.

In the glassed-in shower, the Grespania Mito Blanco wall tile is complemented by Happy Floors interior tile in Dust, which adds a gray tone. The shower head and faucets belong to Moen’s 90 Degree collection. The sink is Mirabelle Myers undermount from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. Right: The master bedroom’s Andes Bed from CB2 maximizes storage space with its builtin, two-shelf nightstands. Ash Studio Design created the art that hangs above the bed. The open closet outfitted by Londos Fine Cabinetry is a dream come true for Ryan, who always wanted a walkaround closet with natural light.

“Throughout the home, the features are not in competition with the views nor the art the client selected,” McGinnis proclaims. This design philosophy especially holds true in the kitchen, where nearly everything, from the refrigerator to the coffeemaker, hides behind doors. “It doesn’t feel like a kitchen,” says Amanda of her favorite room in the home. “It feels like an open living space.” u

75

When it comes to the furnishings, the couple balances the need for storage and their affinity for modernism with the realities of living with a young daughter. They served as their own interior decorators. “It’s almost a hobby for me,” Amanda acknowledges. “I used to move every year so I could design my place.” Luckily, the couple has similar taste. “We really wanted to go with clean lines and we wanted to keep them light colored,” says Amanda. “We also had to be practical. Some design choices were based on having child.” The Campbells primarily use a mix of big-box store furniture with notable exceptions. “Each room has one unique piece we spent time finding,” Ryan says. The combination of custom and store-bought items, much like the collaboration between the homeowners and the builder, produces a final outcome that is better together. n

Above: The fully equipped guest suite has a separate entrance so that it could be rented, but its primary intent is for visiting family. “We want them to feel comfortable staying a long time,” Ryan says. The kitchenette boasts Londos Fine Cabinetry similar to the main kitchen. The dining table is from Room & Board, as are the bedside lamps. West Elm’s Mid-Century Upholstered dining chairs offer space for a quiet meal. The platform bed provides visitors with extra storage space.

76

Above: The den doubles as an office for both Ryan and Amanda, requiring a custom desk. Londos Fine Cabinetry fabricated the desk to their specifications. “They wanted to work where they could enjoy the view,” McGinnis says. Ryan, who works from home, adds, “It had to at least be a comfortable room.” Function meets comfort and style in the Herman Miller Sayl Chairs and the West Elm couch from the Tillary Collection. The coffee table blocks are from CB2. The Campbells collected most of their fun and eclectic artwork during their travels. Two known artists are Erica Sirotich and Scott C.

A decade of memories and three young boys later, the owners of a classic 80’s era home embarked on a major remodel to create more space and amenities to suit the couple and their active growing family. “They favor classic elements but wanted a much more modern feel,” explains interior designer Kristin Raybon of Kristin Raybon Designs. The design goal for the family was simple. “I wanted to create spaces that were meant to be enjoyed as well as designing a beautiful interior that is a true reflection of the family who lives there.” u

The renovation called for taking the interior down to the studs. The square footage was doubled to include a new master suite on the main floor, a three-car garage with a bonus “hang out” above for the boys, a laundry room, mud room, and a large pool and spa. Upstairs, three ensuite bedrooms were created for their sons, and the home was reroofed as well. A spacious rear deck was planned for entertaining family and friends. The updated floor plan centers around an enormous kitchen, “where the family lives,” smiles Raybon. “The goal of this design was to create a home that was timeless, and one that could be enjoyed. The family members are outdoor enthusiasts with a love of water sports, and I used their collections throughout the home.” u

Large hand-carved wooden legs by Finecraft Custom Cabinetry give the piece “furniture appeal.” A glass-fronted display cabinet with crisscross mullions balances the oversized stainless steel SubZero refrigerator and freezer. Dado gray gloss tile surrounds a blend of blue glass mosaic scale tiles set in a backsplash of crackle-glazed tile in Elephant.

The backsplash of 1-by-4-inch glass mosaic tile in a chevron pattern complements the kitchen backsplash. Dark wood newel post caps, bannisters, balustrades, and stair treads contrast with the white risers and newel posts. An openwork metal Hollis chandelier echoes the clean lines. The antique lamp table and chair from Henredon, paired with a modern acrylic and porcelain lamp, add curves and color to the foyer. Wide planked porcelain tile resembling distressed wood runs throughout the main floor of the home. Sherwin-Williams On the Rocks in half strength gives this and the other main floor rooms a quiet backdrop. Glossy white trim punctuates every space, found in the baseboards, crown moulding, window and stairwell trim. The cathedral ceiling in the main living area is a warmly stained cedar, creating a weathered look in the brand new space. Raybon made extensive use of the classic trademark colors of the surrounding coast, breathing a nautical ambiance into the home. “The resulting design is a mix of coastal hues with vibrant tangerine that symbolizes the happy energy of this family,” observes Raybon. n

The stunning roofline and exterior details of this coastal transitional home sitting at the mouth of the Manatee River belies the before picture of its gut renovation; a 1970s style house with a flat roof and a secondfloor apartment above a three story garage. The owners were attracted to the charming and upscale neighborhood of the Manatee River region. Realtor Pam Charron of Berkshire Hathaway assisted their search for a waterfront home with good bones which Dan Gagne, owner of Gagne Construction then renovated to their specifications. u

Right: A carport courtyard with soft gray pavers leads to a three-car garage with a bedroom suite above. Welded rails across decks were added to break up the outdated 1970s structure and hint at the contemporary nautical themes explored inside. The unique cantilevered observation deck adds drama, height, and provides uninterrupted river views. Black bronze rectangular sconces with glass panels by Blu Home and custom pendants stand starkly against the white exterior walls. The front door is custommade from warm mahogany with horizontal glass panels.

The ebony-finished legs of the simple chairs are matched by the black frames of the geometric series of prints lining the walls of the vestibule that leads to the guest suites. Left: Interior designer Holiday created custom chairs with a white-washed oak herringbone detail on the back as the first furniture visible in the home. The Kravet fabric has a hint of blue and is complemented by the Bungalow 5 navy blue end tables with statement mirrored metal-based lamps and a gray linen shade from Pink Pineapple. The custom sectional is in a durable white Sunbrella fabric from International Design Source and sits across from a white-gloss coffee table. The split-faced stone fireplace in white and the frosted mirroredglass tiles are both from Tile Market of Sarasota and provide additional light and texture. The charcoal painted interiors of the custom cabinetry add depth.Â

In the original building, few rooms were geared towards the river, while the new construction prioritizes water. The owner’s suite and two additional suites around the perimeter of the great room offer an unobstructed view of the river from the front door. “We didn’t want the formal dining room to distract from the water views,” says Gagne, “so while the great room is open, we partially walled-off the dining room to keep the sight line towards the river from the moment you enter the house. This way, you’re discovering portions of the home along the way.” Even the enclosed office has glass barn doors to maintain a seamless vista of the water. “The magnificent great room ceiling was the focus of the interior design,” explains interior designer Jessica Holiday, owner of HSH Designs. “We tied in built-in cabinets to the architectural fine points throughout the home.” u

The new floor plan expands the footprint with a 3-foot bump-out for a study and the owner’s bathroom suite, adding curb appeal with plenty of sculptural elements, but ultimately accommodating a new roof configuration and reengineered trusses for the large and impressive vaulted ceiling. A garage apartment is now connected to the house and a new staircase above an added guest suite, creates an observation tower that looks beyond the house to a panorama of the water. “We added porches, columns, decks, louvres, and horizontal railings, and lightened them up in a modern contemporary way,” architect David Wash explains. u

Above: The bathroom mood is inspired by a Visual Comfort chandelier with a slight arch and rectangular lines echoed in the Kohler tub and stunning tile details. The tiled floor pattern consists of white Thassos rectangular tiles framing square-cut Thassos tiles turned on the diamond with a mother-of-pearl hatched tile inlaid band also used on the vanity wall with inset mirror. All of the selections are from Tile Market of Sarasota. Left: Floor to ceiling built-ins and the tongue-and-groove ceiling cocoon the owner’s bedroom. The height of the updated Noir white-washed oak canopy bed balances the height of the cabinetry and is flanked by Bungalow 5 chests. The wall hangings are a resin composite faux-coral, and stone lamps with a metal rimmed base are hand-carved. The Jaipur rug in soft creamy grays with white details brings movement to the room and prevents the lines of the room from feeling boxy.

Left: While the location and shape of the pool remain the same, the rear of the house received significant attention in the renovation. The existing retaining walls were used to create a terrace that wraps around the back, with an outdoor kitchen of NatureKast Outdoor Cabinetry in Silver Birch from Progressive Cabinetry and grill from American Grill & Hearth. Cabled rails disappear so there’s no structure impeding the view, and an expansive staircase frames the landscape. Around the side of the deck is an outdoor shower and enclosed dressing area. The pool was updated, and the owners added a new shell stone travertine deck, stairs, and walkway to the dock.Â

Situated on a generous acre of land in the exclusive Concession gated golf community in Sarasota, Stock Development’s Clairborne II model represents the grand lifestyle of its surroundings. The landscape retains much of the Florida topography, including a majestic oak that frames the architecture, and affords this modern West Indies transitional home an unusual and welcome lived-in setting for its contemporary construction. u

Right: The house already hosts a bonus room with an informal gathering space, so the great room provides a more formal sitting area. Matching Bernhardt sofas in a shimmery textured gray and polished stainless steel base, Bernhardt Wynn chairs with wood arms that wrap around the back, and additional ottomans maximize seating around an upholstered cocktail table with a tufted gray faux suede from Vanguard. A 50-inch-wide 20-light Kelly Wearstler Strada chandelier in a nickel finish from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery was the inspiration for the wood beam and crown moulding ceiling detail. Open rounded walnut end tables in a dove gray finish from Vanguard, and fluted glass lamps with hand-applied silver finish and ivory shades offset the strong rectangular lines in the room.

Meredith Barnes, senior designer at Soco Interiors, was charged with turning this model into a buyer’s dream. Clean lines and functionality, with elements of surprise, were her guiding principles. Barnes elected for a neutral palette of grays and taupe against two-tone white walls with pops of modern glimmer in glass, mirror, and Lucite for a classic, calming, light and sophisticated impression in every room as well as the outdoor spaces. “I wasn’t going for a specific styled look,” describes Barnes, “but a home that would appeal to someone that likes to entertain and enjoys an occasional talking point or piece. The neutrals allow the future buyer to bring their own personal touches.” According to Leger-Wetzel, the fulfillment of every homeowner’s desire in this model home means, “…all you need is your toothbrush and your pots and pans to move in.” n

Above: The bathroom is a study in chrome, glass, and soft neutrals, with elements reflecting each other throughout. His and hers vanities topped with Stellar Gray quartz speckled with flecks of glass line the bathroom that is otherwise fully tiled in Sonoma Sky porcelain in a warm marbleized gray. For this show-stopping six bedroom, five full- and two-half bath home with 8,200 square feet on Tampa Bay, a great deal of thought went into the placement of the array of windows. Architect Stephen Smith’s goal was for all major spaces to have fabulous water views and natural light. One of the home’s unique features, borrowed from an island resort, is the 5-by-10-foot, 900-pound Sapele African Mahogany front door that pivots at the touch of a finger to allow entry. Another is a living wall, fronting the motor court, which has a hidden irrigation system to maintain the plantings.

When a hardworking team of highly creative people put their heads together, the outcome can be brilliant. This gorgeous home in Tampa Bay’s Culbreath Isle community is one such outcome. Builders Mark Jordan and Peter Kieffer were contacted by the extremely well-traveled homeowners who were interested in incorporating things they’d admired on their travels into the home they wished to build. Knowing just where to turn to realize the clients’ dreams, Jordan brought in architect Stephen Smith, with whom he had worked on previous projects. “I have extensive experience in coastal and tropical architecture and Mark thought that would be helpful in this project,” says Smith. u

Left: A two-story glass wall affords views of the black stone-lined reflecting pool, infinity swimming pool, and bay beyond, bringing the element of water into this dramatic living room. The other main focal point is the massive floating fireplace flue, adapted from one seen in a Vegas hotel. The 20-foot high flue is clad in Sapele wood veneer panels and finished in Wagamama marble. Suspended above the 66-inch custom graphite-colored porcelain hearth, the flue shows no outward support for its 6-foot width and 12,000-pound weight, making it a gravitydefying structural engineering miracle. Gray and white leather All Modern seating gets pops of color from the citrine JF Fabric cushions topping the metal stools and Zoffany fabric pillows. The designer, Eric Krause, worked closely with the builder and architect to maximize the spectacular water views from every room, while also creating an atmosphere of calm and balance uniquely suited to the family. “Any qualified designer can design a beautiful home, but I am often told by my clients that my design embodies exactly what the clients had envisioned for themselves; that I translated their ideas perfectly. That is the highest compliment.” n

On the left, steps to the master suite are lit by oversized sconces from Modern Forms by Avec Lighting, and to the right a circular staircase of stainless steel aircraft cable allows ease of passage between the home’s two stories. Right: To avoid grout lines, Krause chose an interwoven 12 –by-24-inch tile by Ceramica D’Imola to surround the three-sided infinity-edge pool. This negative-edge effect works well since the deck was built six feet above the bay. The rectangular pool and infinityedge raised spa are covered in French Grey PebbleTec tile lit by color-changeable LEDs.

Interior designer Dale Blumberg of Dale Blumberg Interiors hails from South Africa, and her global perspective is evident in her vacation home in Sarasota, which she shares with husband Mark. Residents of New York, they purchased the property in 2017 to use as a warm-weather getaway. “We love the openness and the indoor/outdoor living,” says Blumberg. “I think coming from South Africa, it’s a little reminiscent of homes there.” The home’s design also has roots in Florida, taking its cues from the Sarasota School of Architecture. It’s a style that is close to the heart of builder Craig Holliday. “My father was one of the Sarasota School architects,” he says. “It’s neat to create something he had a hand in designing 60 years ago.” Generally characterized by its inspiration’s clean lines and minimalistic design, the Blumbergs’ home has a warm and casual atmosphere. “For me, this house feels beachy,” she states. “Interesting pieces give it texture and depth.” u

Right: Custom built in 2014, the four-bedroom, onestory house recalls the aesthetic of the Sarasota School of Architecture both in its clean lines and its exterior finishes. The environment is also taken into consideration. Builder Craig Holliday notes the long, cantilevered roof panels designed so that the sun rarely directly hits the glass, making the 3,000-square-foot home more energyefficient. The concrete pavers, pebbles, and xeriscaping keep yard maintenance manageable.

The living room’s custom white sofas inspired the rest of the home. Blumberg layered the texture “to make the room feel warm even though there’s very little color.” The La Salle metal-wrapped table from Restoration Hardware sits next to a hand-stamped linen ottoman. Painted South African fertility dolls rest atop a bleached oak table with sculptural legs. Across the room, a floor lamp from French maker Bleu Nature combines found wood and white metal. “I love the organic nature against the cinderblock wall,” Blumberg says. “It’s a very Zen room, but it has nothing to do with Asia.” The woven leather chairs are from Saffron + Poe. Anthony George Home crafted the colorful pillows.

The designer spent about eight months completely redecorating the home and says the process presented her with a unique challenge. “It’s almost easier to design for clients than myself,” Blumberg laughs. “You have to be extremely discerning. It’s very personal for me.” The furnishings and art are an international, eclectic mix of brand-new, custom, vintage, and her personal previously owned pieces. “These are just things that I love,” she says. For instance, in the living room, painted African sculptures share space with a metal-and-wood French lamp and a Turkish rug. In the office, a Florida artist’s painting, a Moroccan rug, and a photograph of Cuba add character to a utilitarian room. u

Below: The open-concept kitchen has a clean and bright look. Caesarstone graces the waterfall island and the back counter, where the cooktop resides. Custom maple Devittori Custom Cabinetry and Woodwork act as storage and house dual ovens and an oversized refrigerator. For a pop of color, Blumberg transported an abstract blue oil on canvas painting from her New York home. “Every white room needs a little bit of dark to balance them out,” Blumberg suggests. The epoxy-painted concrete floors and Organic Modernism metal café stools help to achieve an equilibrium.

170

Above: The dining room mixes cultures, tones, and textures into a delicious setting to enjoy a meal. The custom oxidized maple dining table is surrounded by Bottega side chairs in off-white leather from Design Within Reach. A Brazilian cowhide patchwork rug anchors the dining area. A credenza with a faux horn starburst pattern supports matching Kelly Wearstler Armato table lamps. African bowls from Ethnic Origins, two oil portraits of women by a South African artist, and a photograph of Chinatown lend artistic interest to the room.

www.HomeAndDesign.net

171

In addition to designing with a worldly assortment of items, Blumberg also likes to layer textures to add dimension. The master bedroom is a perfect example, where a shaggy rug lies next to a rustic teak bench and ostrich leather nightstands neighbor an upholstered headboard. The room has a cozy feel despite its neutral color palette. While the Blumbergs furnished the home with their favorite pieces, the couple has retained most of the original owners’ interior fixtures. Outdoors, it is a different story. The couple made over the courtyard to suit their lifestyle. u

Above: The master bathroom is a study in light and dark. The gray epoxy-coated flooring grounds the room, while white floating cabinets by Devittori Custom Cabinetry and Woodwork, Caesarstone and above-counter white sinks, and white walls brighten it. An oversized painting by D-L-Steiner injects color into the stark space. The massive shower features a rainfall shower head; a rectangular window lets in natural light and maintains privacy.

172

www.HomeAndDesign.net

Above: In the master bedroom, comfort is king. Brooklinen bedding in Smoke Stripe covers the custom king-size bed, and Kerri Rosenthal fabric pillows throw a tribal-looking pattern amongst the serene stripes. Blumberg masked the maple partition with a leaflike wallpaper. On either side of the bed, nightstands wrapped in textural ostrich leg leather hold Cleo Table Lamps by Kelly Wearstler. The Huxley wool rug from Serena & Lily is soft under bare feet. Blumberg says the primitive teak bench from Andrianna Shamaris is surprisingly comfortable. Above it hangs a painting by Sarasota artist D-L-Steiner.

www.HomeAndDesign.net

173

Below Left: A moody vibe emanates from the guest bathroom. Blumberg stained the once maple walls in charcoal. Two geometrically carved African shields offer a change in texture and shape against the stark paneling. Not only are the cabinets floating, but the toilet is wall-mounted as well, per the original owners’ request. An antique Turkish rug comforts the feet and is the only color in the room. Another painted African sculpture stands serenely on the counter. A photograph of a Roman statue is reflected in the mirror.

174

www.HomeAndDesign.net

Above: Perhaps the home’s most unusual room, the office doubles as the fourth bedroom. The custom couch, topped with pillows by Little Design Company, converts to a bed. The narrow room’s personality comes from its accessories. The vintage Moroccan rug was the initial impetus, but “every here and there is a little nod to mid-century,” Blumberg says. Two sizes of the Flos Gatto lamp illuminate the Croft House steel desk, which pairs perfectly with the Arne Jacobsen Drop chair. The Pier floor lamps from Rypen combine brushed brass columns with cast concrete bases that echo the walls. Teak root whitewashed side tables contribute an organic element, and the wooly ottoman from Jonathan Adler is the epitome of whimsical texture. D-L-Stein’s carved plaster artwork counterbalances Gregoire Moulin’s photograph titled “Riding with Raphael.” Above Left: The guest bedroom is a calm retreat for visitors. The mostly neutral palette comes courtesy of the king bed upholstered in Holly Hunt fabric, the Brooklinen bedding, ivory leather-and-aluminum Piccola Table Lamps by Pablo Designs, and the Braided Wool Serena & Lily rug. Opposite the bed, the ModShop Cody dresser with gray recycled wood sits below a bright and playful series of prints by mid-century French artist Bernard Buffet. A multicolored throw rests on a wooden ladder in the corner, ready to comfort a tired guest.

www.HomeAndDesign.net

“We created a space where we could be comfortable outside,” she says. The most obvious change is the addition of a heated, saltwater pool in place of the existing bocce ball court, perhaps the only occasion where a touch of international flavor was removed from the home. n

Left: The center courtyard acts as an extension of the home, with most rooms opening to the outdoors. The Blumbergs almost completely remodeled the outdoor space, adding a heated, saltwater pool as the focal point. Shell Crete tiles hem-in existing trees, including a mango. Family and guests can enjoy a meal at the Aegean Aluminum collection table and chairs, or just lounge on the chaises that perch on the patch of artificial grass. “We’re not there all year round so we didn’t want grass that grew,” Blumberg says. www.HomeAndDesign.net

MAGICAL RENOVATION MERGING TWO DATED WATERFRONT CONDOS

T

Twenty-five years of serving the same clients taught interior designer Mark Dalton of Mark Dalton, Inc., what to expect when he was asked to conjure one gulf-front retreat from two adjacent 70’s-era condominium units. Playing to the couple’s past careers as nationallytelevised magicians and entertainment company owners, Dalton knew they would bask in a glamorous décor. “They let me run wild,” exclaims Dalton, “The glitzier, the better!” Dalton magically blended the two mirrored ground floor twobedroom, two-bath units in the Island West condominium on Longboat Key into one mesmerizing two-bedroom, three-anda-half bath home with the assistance of general contractor Jeff Francola. “He is the only contractor I work with; he and I have an excellent relationship. He knows what I expect of him,” says Dalton. The two met about ten years ago, when Dalton hired Francola to perform some work on his personal home. “We just clicked,” continues Dalton. u

The handcrafted iron-frame two-light wall sconce from the John-Richard Collection is embellished with faceted glass droplets suspended in metal settings cut on the bias and topped with black synthetic-silk shades with golden trim and gold-foil lining. “Everything has to be gold, chuckles Dalton. Right: Mirrored on the other end of the room, this seating area was dubbed the Solarium by the homeowners. The twin spaces lined with windows, along with the kitchen, connect the two original footprints. Two Caracole Ice Breaker club chairs flank an unusual golden faux tree trunk. Francola adds, “Our businesses grew together. I appreciate Mark’s reasonableness. He listens to input from a contractor’s standpoint and is willing to make adjustments, if needed.” For this astonishing renovation, the pair had to meet a few challenges such as integrating load-bearing support columns in the two original kitchens and converting the common exterior hallway into interior residential space. At the same time, there was a major benefit of working on ground floor units. “That gave us the flexibility of moving plumbing locations, something you normally can’t configure. In this case, we could cut open the slab and reposition the plumbing,” Francola explains. u

Right: Joining the original kitchens resulted in this 25-foot long gourmet kitchen featuring two islands. The original plumbing and electric is hidden in the soffits. The cabinets were painted with a black lacquered base and hand-detailed in gold. KitchenAid was just releasing its appliances in black as this transformation was taking place. Appliances are from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. Brown Marinace granite counters resemble beach rocks. Dalton calls this the “glam beach look.”

186

www.HomeAndDesign.net

187

Just steps from the beach, the unassuming building was constructed on a little point of land, so there are no other buildings blocking its view of the gulf. “It’s like penthouse living on the ground floor,” muses Dalton. Dalton is a big believer in “no clutter” saying, “I prefer things open.” With the exception of the master bath, all of the travertine flooring in the original unit was ripped up, so the entire space could be floored with the same marble, visually expanding the generous 2,480 square feet of the newly combined units. The new space boasts plenty of windows, but wherever there were no windows, Dalton draped the walls to create the illusion. When fully retracted, the drapery headers disappear into the ceiling. u

Right: A new glass top was cut to fit the koi fish table base, one of two that the owners have treasured for 25 years. A circular rug by Masland Carpets sits under the table. Surrounding the unique piece are four golden leather tufted-back modified wing chairs with nail head trim on distressed wooden legs. The Corbett Lighting Pulse pendant from Bee Ridge Lighting uses hand-folded iron mesh to create a ruffled, floral-inspired motif painted with gold leaf.

The floor-to-ceiling tufted headboard breaks up a wall of mirrors of equally large proportions. “I’m a big believer in mirrors,” avows Dalton. “You just need to use them correctly.” Global Views’ Flower Burst two-drawer cabinets in brass flank the bed. Gold-on-gold Twig Bulb lamps cast a warm glow. A Marge Carson Malibu credenza sits below the TV. 190

“This space is likely the last project for them,” Dalton observes of his long-time clients. “They have worked hard and can enjoy their success. This home is a reflection of a life well-lived.” n

Above: The opulent master bath features 24-karat gold faucets from the Santec Ava Crystal collection. Dune Tile’s gold leaf from Fisher Tile gleams from behind a glass wall. The two original rooms were gutted to create this new space. Sleek surfaces, frameless glass shower doors, and backlit vanity mirrors trick the eye into believing it is a larger space. Antik Onyx tile used continuously on the floor, walls, and shower enclosure adds to the illusion.

A small fountain in the middle of the walkway quietly welcomes visitors, while the front door serves a dual purpose. “You have privacy, yet you can still see who’s at the door through the beveled parts,” says Cook. The ThermaTru door is embedded with Axis decorative glass, a combination of reeded and clear panes.

Darla Cook, owner of Green Life Luxury Homes, always dreamed of creating an urban loft. So, she built one in suburban Sarasota, and it fits right in with its neighbors. The street’s mixture of vintage houses and new construction makes an attractive juxtaposition, much like the house itself—a combination of old-fashioned charm and modern-day design. “We wanted to keep a contemporary feel yet bring in very subtle hints of industrial in an elegant, luxurious way,” Cook explains. She achieves this fusion by strategically using the exterior materials and the interior finishes and furnishings. For example, the home’s façade has some classic elements, such as the brick, which contrasts with the dark bluish-gray trim resembling metal. It is actually painted in Cyberspace by Sherwin-Williams. They also aged the driveway and walkway by sprinkling salt in the concrete before it dried. Inside, nearly everything is dulled down to make it feel older, from the honed granite in the living room to the burnished brass fixtures in the upstairs master bathroom. u

The darker hand knotted wool area rug from Rugs as Art, frames in the seating area, which consists of a comfortable Vanguard Furniture sofa and unusual acrylic and fabric chairs from Thayer Coggin. All furniture in the home is sourced from International Design Source. The throw pillows come from Charlotte’s Grace. Above the electric Dimplex fireplace hangs the painting titled “At Peace” by husband-and-wife team Michelle and Robert Casarietti of Casarietti Studio.

Above: The dining room is separated from the living room by a series of brick knee walls. A storefront window brings in light and adds a New York loft feeling to the space. The flooring here and throughout most of the home is porcelain wood-look tile. Hanging above the Vanguard Furniture dining table is the Sethos Chandelier by Currey & Company. The dining chairs are by Century Furniture and Lexington Home Brands from International Design Source. Right: In the kitchen, matte contrasts with shiny in a subtle way. The granite, hand-selected by European Marble, is book-matched. The poplar Cucine Ricci cabinets have a two-toned concrete and walnut finish, and the backsplash is Crossville’s Sideview Glass tile in Tungsten Polished available at Omicron Granite & Tile. The appliances include KitchenAid’s new black stainless-steel refrigerator from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. Above the stove, Cucine Ricci custom-made twin hoods with a faux finish make an industrial statement, as does the Blanco Silgranit sink in the peninsula. The basin, a combination of resin and quartz, looks like stainlesssteel without the spotting and scratching. Velvety stools with nail-head trim and exposed wood provide seating. Overhead, Currey & Company Moorsgate light fixtures are mounted on wood brackets designed by GreenLife.

and enjoy your space,” Carson says of the little getaway.

Despite its urban loft description that sometimes conjures visions of sleekness over livability, the house is family-friendly and welcoming. Interior designer Meg Carson of EMCY Interior Design contributes to this vibe with the carefully selected furnishings. She calls them “comfy without being frumpy.” Carson’s design choices complement the black ironwork and other industrial features with a neutral palate of creams and grays and soft textures, including feathers and silk. “It’s not typical coastal Sarasota,” Carson says of the décor. u

The stair risers are made of red oak stained walnut, and the railings are powder-coated in Cyberspace, the same paint used on the home’s exterior trim. Cook says it looks like metal even on the wood trim below the railings. The colorful portrait is by Jane Fidalgo. A first-floor powder room just beyond the stairwell boasts a mitered block of Carrera marble as the sink’s pedestal, with LBL Facette pendant lights overhead.

THE HOME TRUST INTERNATIONAL

Budgeting For Interior Design Services An exception to this is the re-location of a primary residence with substantial furnishings and art. Your furnishings fee will decrease in this case. But your design professional’s fee should not.

Photo Courtesy of Gil Walsh Interiors

2. One third of your total Home Trust Interiors Index budget will be allocated for project management and design fees from your interior design firm. Consider this a fixed fee and not a variable. 3. Renovations are an additional variable because they add to the complexity and time an interior designer invests in your home. Their design fee for renovations will be 15% +/- of the construction cost.

You just purchased a new house. Now what? It’s time to consider your interiors to ensure your new house becomes your new home. It shouldn’t be a surprise that this costs money. The amount you budget should be aligned with the value of your new home. In Florida, the general rule of thumb is that any home purchased at $750,000 or more will benefit greatly from engaging a design professional. Hiring an interior designer for a home valued over $1,500,000 is considered de rigueur. Our research indicates that many consumers are surprised by the cost of design services and furnishings for their new home. Hiring a professional and credentialed interior designer is essential for estate homes because planning and furnishing your home is a Herculean task. Mistakes are expensive. To alleviate confusion and frustration, we have created The Home Trust Interiors Index. Professional design does not have to be expensive but it is rarely cheap. Under-budgeting and buying less than appropriate furnishings for your interiors demeans the value and sophistication of your new home.

Professional interior designers are credentialed and learned individuals. A design fee and project management fees are fair compensation for your designer’s expertise. Home Trust interior designers are committed to creating a home which reflects your personal expression and sophistication. The Home Trust Interiors Index has become the industry standard for appropriate budgeting to complete your home. We trust you’ll leverage it as a tool to protect your investment and to ensure you enjoy living in South Florida as much as we do. For more information please visit www.thehometrust.com/interiors-index

There are three elements to The Home Trust Interiors Index: 1. Budget up to 35% of the value of your finished home for interior design services and furnishings. An example, if a finished home is valued at $3,000,000 then you should budget The Home Trust International serves high net worth families as Tasteapproximately $1,000,000 for the furnishings, design fees, and makers, Artisans and Trusted Advisors with products and services for project management costs. Gordon and Mary Jo White’s love affair with coastal living began more than three decades ago, with the 1986 construction of his parents’ Longboat Key retirement residence. The Whites first enjoyed various vacation condos in the Sarasota area, then spent a dozen years in Naples. “We returned to Longboat Key because our sons bought vacation homes in this area,” explains Gordon White, founder and president of the G.A. White Companies. The Ohio-based family-owned residential and commercial construction and development firm includes sons Chad and Shawn. “We came full circle,” adds Mary Jo. “It felt like coming home; many of the places and businesses we had visited years ago are still here.” The couple purchased a 2,820-square-foot second floor Sabal model condo at L’Ambiance on Longboat Key. The luxury two-building Gulf front condominium also offers views of Sarasota Bay across the greens and fairways of Longboat Key Golf Club. The Whites then proceeded to gut the unit, “right down to the concrete,” says Gordon. The goal of their redesign was to bring the outside in. Drawing on Gordon’s building expertise and Mary Jo’s design talents, the Whites created a stunning, open floorplan in which every room has a view of either the Gulf of Mexico or Sarasota Bay. “We wanted a seamless transition from the outside to the inside and drew upon the colors God gave us in nature,” explains Mary Jo. The result is a soothing combination of brilliant whites, soft sands, and sparkling blue accents complementing natural woods and coastal textures. u

Throughout the home, wall-hung shelves, vanities, cabinets, and mirrors free-up floor space and enhance the sensation of floating from one room to another. Decorative accents are kept to a minimum, emphasizing the streamlined design. Inventive use of highly efficient LED lighting eliminates the need for bulky table or floor lamps. From every angle, the eye is drawn to the natural view beyond. u

A striking original oil from Clive Daniel Home adds vibrant color to the space. “It’s fun!” exclaims White. “And it reminds me of my wife!”

The revitalization wasn’t just cosmetic. The Whites basically rebuilt the interior, adding a third bedroom, all new plumbing, new air conditioning and electrical wiring, and new exterior windows and doors. They created visual interest overhead with different ceiling drops and the addition of riftsawn white oak beams in several rooms. “This was a whole new look for the building,” beams

Gordon.

One of just four homes in the micro-gated community of Coffee Pot Estates on Snell Isle, this contemporary began with a vision and design from Latin America. “Before we could break ground on this home, the plans had to be converted to American building standards, explains builder Elisa LaBram Verch whose company was selected by the developer to build four waterfront homes that comprise Coffee Pot Estates. The tiny territory on Coffee Pot Bayou is within walking distance to trendy downtown St. Petersburg. u

232

“This was our first contemporary design and it was exciting!” says Verch. “Most of the homes on Snell Island are Mediterranean or European designs; there are very few contemporaries.” The cool white modern residence with a low-pitched flat tile roof does stand in contrast to its warm-toned neighbors topped with terra-cotta barrel tile. u

Above: “The dining area emphasizes the importance of light in this home,” says Verch. “We worked within the parameters of residential glass to maximize the view.” Polycotton Seatbelt Chairs from the Phillips Collection surround a reclaimed elm plank T-leg table from the Organic Restoration collection at Blue Hand Home. “No two homes we build are exactly alike,” continues Verch. “We are 110% a custom builder. This client had great vision and was a lot of fun to work with. She was integral in the fixture and finish selections, drawing on her experience as an interior designer.” The four bedrooms and four-and-a-half bathrooms are spread out over three levels in the 3,686-square-foot, two-story structure. A mezzanine level houses one of the guest suites. Two more are on the second floor. The master suite, with two sitting areas, is conveniently located on the main floor. All of the bedrooms have access to the outdoors through balconies or terraces. u

Glimpsed beyond the frameless glass shower door, the vanities’ white lacquer finish is a stunning foil for the gleaming chrome fixtures from Lyteworks and full-width mirror. Left: “The home is actually a tri-level,” explains Verch. “This guest room and bath are actually on their own level and landing.” A slender pencil post canopy bed suits the long, narrow, minimalist design of the room. Tone-on-tone bed linens visually expand the space. A simple foot locker at the foot of the bed can serve several purposes in addition to providing storage. Here it holds accessories, functioning much as a coffee table would.
