Field verification, testing and archiving was completed and passed by these home entries. The HERS Index Scale helps home owners understand how energy-efficient their home is as compared to others.
Professional Designations
Licensing Requirements On each home listing in this magazine, you will see the builders’ license numbers listed for Minnesota and North Dakota (examples: MN BC003792; ND 369). Builders acquire license numbers for the states in which they work. North Dakota requires a contractor to obtain a license when the cost, value or price per job exceeds $2,000. Minnesota requires contractors to acquire licenses when the annual gross receipts from residential contracting or remodeling activities exceeds $15,000. Professional designations set HBA members apart You may have noticed acronyms trailing behind company names in this magazine. They represent a professional designation from the National Association of Home Builders or North Dakota Association of Builders. They say a lot about a builder, remodeler or building industry associate. Professional designations offer opportunities for Home Builders Association of F-M members to improve skills, advance their careers and be recognized for commitment to professional growth. What do they mean?
Certified Aging-In-Place Specialist (CAPS) Teaches the technical, business management and customer service skills essential to competing in the aging-in-place market. Certified Graduate Builder (CGB) Emphasizes business and project management skills critical to a successful homebuilding operation. Certified Green Professional (CGP) Teaches builders, remodelers and other industry professionals techniques for incorporating green building principles into homes — without driving up construction cost. Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR) emphasizes business management skills as related to a remodeling operation. Certified Graduate Master Remodeler (GMR) Held by a select group of building industry professionals: applicants must have at least 15 years of remodeling experience before they are even eligible to be considered for the designation. 14
Certified Graduate Master Builder (GMB) For experienced veterans only: before beginning the GMB designation process, applicants must have the CGB designation or the CGR designation with five years of building experience, or 10 years of building experience and successful completion of three CGB/CGR courses. Housing Credit Certified Professional (HCCP) A specialized designation for developers, property managers, asset managers and others working in the affordable housing industry through the LowIncome Housing Tax Credit. North Dakota Professional Builders (NDPB) NDAB makes its best efforts to determine a builder’s qualifications for certification as an NDPB. This nationwide trend coupled with complications from the pandemic, has created challenges for those looking to update, build or buy a home. Here are our top three tips to prevail in your quest!

Plan ahead and have patience. Contractors (all sectors) are extremely busy and may be booked out for months. Lead times are often longer than usual for labor and supplies. Supplies including lumber, metals, components like windows and appliances may be delayed due to demand/shipping delays
Adaptability is your friend! Be prepared to have flexibility in choosing options for your home selections. Prepare a prioritized list of must-haves, prefer-to-haves and back-ups within your budget. Work with your contractor and their trades to look at alternatives as needed. Adopting an adaptable mindset from the get-go will save you headaches and heartaches in the long run. Look at it as a great reason to expand your Pinterest board!
Communication is more critical than ever. This tip is nothing new, but now we’re underlining and bolding it. Keep lines of communication open between your builder and lender on closing dates and interest rate locks, pricing fluctuations and home valuations.

Home Builders Care offers springtime opportunities for teens Summer trades camp allows students access to the pros
Students ages 15-21 can work directly with homebuilding industry professionals to gain exposure to the trades during the Herdina Construction Trades Camp weekdays, June 6-17, at Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Moorhead. For details on applying, visit Home Builders Care of Fargo-Moorhead Foundation’s website at hbcfm.com or follow the Herdina Camp on Facebook. A certified instructor supervises all hands-on activities with industry volunteers and students will learn about several trades including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, roofing and siding.
Scholarships available for high school students pursuing trades careers
Home Builders Care of Fargo-Moorhead Foundation offers scholarships to high school junior and senior students each spring. Find details at hbcfm.com on the Scholarships page. The Deadline to apply is generally the end of March each year. Scholarship amounts area awarded at a $500 minimum. Applicants must plan to enroll in residential construction trades or a related field (plumbing, electrical, building construction technology, construction management, hearting/air conditioning, etc.) at Minnesota State Community and Technical College-Moorhead or North Dakota State College of Science-Wahpeton.
