The General Assembly of the United Nations has declared 2014 as the International Year of Family Farming (IYFF). During the event, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization will aid in the multilateral collaboration of governments, international development institutions, farmers’ organizations, and non-governmental organizations involved in this sector. The goal of the IYFF is to raise the profile of family farming and smallholder farming by focusing the world’s attention on its significant role in alleviating poverty, improving food security, managing natural resources, protecting the environment, and achieving sustainable development. Objectives The 2014 IYFF is an attempt to reposition family farming at the center of agricultural, environmental, and social policies on national agendas. To do this, the organizations involved will be identifying gaps and opportunities to promote a shift toward more equal and balanced development. The 2014 IYFF will promote discussion and cooperation at the national, regional, and global levels. It will also increase public awareness about the challenges faced by smallholders and identify means to support them. Actions The 2014 IYFF will focus on three lines of action to be implemented in the context of national agreements. 1. the promotion of dialogue in policy decision-making processes 2. the identification and dissemination of positive results from existing family farming policies 3. communication, advocacy, and outreach

Biodiversity threatened on family dinner tables Very few foods are competing to be on family dinner tables around the globe. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, only four crops make up over 60 percent of the food on our plates: rice, wheat, corn, and potatoes. Moreover, 95 percent of food energy requirements are met by only about thirty crops across the globe, which isn’t very many. This phenomenon is part of a definite decline in food biodiversity, especially when we consider that more than 7,000 plant species have been used for human consumption since the beginnings of agriculture. Our dependence on these kinds of food crops, far too few in both number and variety, causes a great deal of environmental stress, especially among the poorest populations of the developing world. However, there are some solutions to the challenge of improving the world’s food supplies. Strained by overly intensive growing methods, some crop productions are now being moved to higher ground where they can diversify. That is the case for wheat, beans, rice, oats, vines, orange trees, and rye. Mountainous landscapes are proving to be more favorable to biodiversity, contrary to the uniformity of the plains, which consist of “ecological niches”. There is no doubt that right now, 10,000 years after agriculture first appeared, food biodiversity is in danger. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that 75 percent of crop diversity was lost between 1900 and 2000. New varieties must therefore be made accessible to the world’s farmers in order to effectively fight food insecurity, caused in large part by climate change. The move to higher land is one solution, but others must also be developed in order to counter this global threat.

Have you ever heard of teosinte? Originating in south-west Mexico, teosinte, or “grain of the gods” in the Aztec language, grows in the wild and is a small plant that develops ears similar to corn. Teosinte still grows wild in many mountainous areas of Central America and includes a variety of species. It belongs to the grass family, as does its familiar descendant, corn. Nowadays, most specialists agree that corn is a domesticated version of teosinte. The domestication of teosinte happened over 5,000 years ago. Since then, corn (Zea mays) has definitely developed several agronomic attributes, but it has also lost its ability to survive in the wild. Spreading toward what is now the United States and northeastern North America, more than 300 varieties of corn were already being cultivated by the time the plant was brought to Europe in the fifteenth century.

Today, corn is both the most cultivated plant in the world, feeding a good part of the planet, and is the plant which best symbolizes globalization and genetic manipulation. Currently, the two largest corn producers are the United States and China, producing more than 60 percent of the global crop.

But speculation and trading might not hold on to their allure for the cleverest graduates in the middle-distant future. More than a few economic forecasters are saying that the MBAs of today will be overshadowed by the agricultural degrees of tomorrow.

The world’s food and fuel problems are really only just beginning; with population increases and the accessibility of fuel oil on the decrease, the people who can strategize and grow the right crops are those who will be the most treasured in our economy. In fact, Timothy Burcham, dean of agriculture and technology at Arkansas State University, recently told CNBC News that “the opportunities for a person that has a graduate degree in agriculture are great now, but they are going to be really, really excellent going into the future.” That is no secret to technology companies like Google, whose Google Glass technology is seen to have broad implications for the farmers and agronomists of the future. Growers wearing Glass gear in the combine will be able to refer to insect databanks and crop yield information even as they drive down the rows! It’s just another example of how exciting and full of potential the next years in agriculture are going to be. As well-known investor Jim Rogers told CNBC news, “I’d urge (young people) not to get MBAs, but to get agricultural degrees.” It sure looks like this is where great things are going to be happening soon.

Best known to many as the “Cattle Whisperer”, Temple Grandin is a remarkable woman. Over the last 30 years the researcher, author, and Colorado State University animal science professor has embraced her autism and used her visual-thinking talents to bring humane slaughtering techniques — and more efficiency — to the nation’s abattoirs. She was one of Time’s 100 most influential people in America in 2010 because of the improvements she has brought to animal husbandry and productivity. Some of Grandin’s most widely adapted meat plant improvements are related to the better herding and stunning of animals. Pigs and cattle that are frightened or improperly stunned result in pale, oozing meat; bruises and “dark cutters” (dark meat); blood splash; and bone fractures. From a purely economic standpoint, such compromised meat is undesirable to the consumer and thus affects the entire supply chain. From a humane point of view, poor handling practices mean terrified livestock, which is also undesirable for most consumers — especially as more and more Americans want to know where their food is coming from. Famously, Grandin’s analytical mind prompted her to make her way through meat plant slaughter chutes practically on all fours. Simulating the run of a pig on its way out of a livestock truck and into the plant enabled the researcher to see that the animal’s natural herding behavior can be used to increase productivity. “Put the hot shot away, and stop screaming” is what she advocates. Gentle movements with rustling cloth, quieter commands, and more carefully directed lighting can make all the difference. The key is to use following behavior to get the animal where it has to go, more peacefully.
