With camping season over and done with, it’s time to start preparing your recreational vehicle for storage. Here are a few helpful tips that will ensure your motorhome or boat is ready to go come spring.

• Clean it inside and out. Get rid of any trash or food to prevent unpleasant odours from forming. Next, remove anything that might retain humidity (like curtains or towels) or could get damaged by frost.

• Shore up the exterior. Make sure that all the joints, walls, doors, windows and the roof of your RV are watertight by caulking any exposed seams. Inspect the propellers and submerged equipment of your boat for any wear and tear.

• Drain the plumbing. All pipes and reservoirs, including the hot water tank — don’t forget to turn off the heating element — must be rinsed and emptied.

Once this is done, make sure to close all inlets and to empty your holding tanks.

• Complete protection. Pour nontoxic anti-freeze in the drains and pipes, but be sure to open the bypass valve on your hot water tank to prevent the antifreeze from entering it. Fill up your gas tank, add a fuel stabilizer to the reservoir and coat the engine parts with a rustproofing lubricant. Remove the battery, hook it up to a battery tender to keep it charged during the winter and store it away from the cold.

Finally, make sure to shut off the propane tanks. When in doubt, entrust the winterization of your engine to your dealership. They’ll be able to offer you expert advice every step of the way or even do it all for you.

Remember to check your fluids October is National Fall Car Care Month. It’s a time to prepare your car for peak performance during the harsher winter months. One easy thing you can do to keep your car in good working order is to check and replace the essential fluids of your car. This includes the following:

produces, you need an appropriate amount of coolant. You don’t want your car to overheat and break down in the middle of winter.

• Brake fluid. The brakes of most modern cars are hydraulic. If your brake fluid becomes contaminated with water, it can cause corrosion in your brake system — something that no one wants!

• Transmission fluid. Just as your engine’s oil lubricates its parts, transmission fluid helps make your gear-shifting apparatus move smoothly.

• Windshield wiper fluid. Many people forget their windshield wiper fluid, but you shouldn’t. Although you didn’t necessarily need it in the summer, it becomes indispensible when dealing with flying road salt in the winter.

If you’ve never changed your car’s fluids before, con­sult your car’s manual to find out how to do it safely. Of course, it’s probably easiest to consult a mechanic to go over your car’s readiness for the winter. He or she can do a complete diagnostic and help prevent problems before they occur.

The fatbike

Layering your apparel is an excellent way to stay comfortable outdoors in all circumstances. The ideal outfit for a winter day comprises three layers of clothing that you can take off and put back on as needed:

3. Snowmobiling. Calling all freedom seekers! Have a seat on your snowmobile and set off to explore scenic spots that are otherwise inaccessible.

4. Downhill skiing or snowboarding. Is there anything more exhilarating than gli­ding down the mountainside at full speed?

5. Dog sledding. Enjoy the perfect combination of adorable animals, pristine landscapes and crisp fresh air by taking a ride on a dog sled. Memorable moments guaranteed!

6. Winter hiking. Frozen ponds, frosty branches, snowy spruces and immaculate mountains — there’s nothing like a hike to experience winter in its entire splendor.

7. Ice fishing. Thanks to the cold weather, you’ll finally be able to fish with­out being hassled by mosquitos. What more could you ask for?

These are just a few of the fun things you can do to beat the winter blues. Tobogganing, playing hockey or broomball, camping and cross-country skiing are some other suggestions. With so many ways to embrace the season, there’s no reason to hibernate this winter! Let’s go play outside!
