BOOTS ON THE GROUND IN VIETNAM a first-person experience Presented By:Larry Korteum, Vietnam Conflict Veteran.
In 1968, there were 535,000 U.S. soldiers in Vietnam, doing hundreds of different jobs. Rather than focusing on blood and death, former Army Specialist Larry Kortuem will discuss the day to day life of an average soldier during the Tet Offensive. He’ll explain the boredom, as well as the danger of being in a combat zone where the friendly and the hostile look the same. He’ll also discuss his PTSD and his positive experiences with the Veterans’ Administration.

The circulation of all MCN members totals over 2.8 million. Some MCN member papers do not run every ad — every week. They may elect to hold the ad until the next week, or if space does not permit, may not run it at all. Our research has found that an estimated 75% of all papers run the MCN ads on any given week. Even at 75% of the circulation, $249 is still an unbeatable price. Each publisher reserves the right to refuse any and all advertising. Tear sheets will not be furnished.

Where do all the nation’s crops go? Most of the crops of the
United States are grown in California and the Midwest. Of those crops, the two most commonly grown are corn and soybeans. Every year, more than 90 million acres of land (roughly the area of Japan) are devoted to corn alone in the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Corn and soybeans are used to make lots of different things, but their primary use is as feed for America’s booming livestock industry. Corn is also used to make other products such as sweeteners, oils and fuel. Corn is so useful and America grows so much of it, in fact, that a lot of what we produce is exported to other countries. According to the USDA, three quarters of all global coarse-grain trade (corn, barley, oats, etc.) is in corn and the U.S. is its largest producer and exporter. The U.S. is also the world’s leading producer of soybeans but only second g l o b a l l y in exports. The USDA estimates that, in 2017, 89 million acres — roughly the area of Germany — of soy were planted in the US. Other countries, such as China, are able to keep their livestock healthy because of corn grown in the United States.

HOME MAGAZINE I SEPTEMBER 11 - 17 , 2018
Each year, the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety sponsors a National Farm Safety and Health Week to educate the public about the dangers of working on farms and promote safe practices in the agricultural industry. Agriculture remains one of the most dangerous industries in America, but many farm-related injuries and deaths can be prevented by making sure that workers receive proper training and equipment undergoes regular maintenance. To commemorate this year’s National Farm Safety and Health Week from September 16 to 22, here are some facts you might not know about agricultural safety. More than 240 agricultural workers are seriously injured on the job each day. In many cases, these accidents occur because workers were not following recommended safety protocols when using certain equipment or methods. Tractor accidents are the most common cause of farm-related deaths. Nearly half of all fatalities in the agriculture industry occur because of accidents involving vehicles, especially tractors. Farmers should make sure tractors have the latest safety features, such as rollover protective structures (ROPs), and operators should be well versed in the safety procedures recommended by the manufacturer. Silos pose serious dangers. Working in silos puts workers in danger of suffocation by grain. Moving grain can become like quicksand and bury a person in seconds. Proper training and protective equipment can help workers stay safe when working with grain in confined spaces. Heat illness can be deadly. In many parts of the country, agricultural workers are at risk of becoming fatally ill from working in hot and humid conditions. During periods of extreme heat, workers should remember to stay hydrated and take breaks to rest in the shade.

Genetically modified crops. Although they can be controversial, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) lead to higher crop yields and help farms to produce enough food to continue to support rapidly growing populations. Furthermore, because genetically modified plants are usually more resistant to pests and disease, farmers don’t need to use as many chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which can be bad for the environment.
Agriculture and the economy Many people rely on the agriculture industry for their foods, but think little of the impact that agriculture has on the larger economy. However, data indicates that agriculture can serve a significant role in the process of solidifying the economy of a country, particularly developing nations. Agriculture also can contribute to the economic prosperity of advanced countries. IPP Media points out that the economic history of many developed countries indicates that agricultural prosperity contributed heavily to their economic advancement. When the basic food supply is strong, the national economy can be strong as well. Particularly in the early days of the United States, farming held a crucial place in establishing the American economy and culture, and still shapes the country today. Many states find that farming and other agricultural pursuits contribute much to the local and national economy. For example, new research from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and University of Wisconsin-Extention show that agriculture is a powerful economic force in Wisconsin. Agricultural businesses help generate more than $83 billion in activity and have created more than 400,000 jobs in that state. The public should not disregard how strong a factor agriculture can be in establishing a strong economic environment. Safeguarding agricultural jobs and the agricultural industry is crucial to economic stability.
HOME MAGAZINE I SEPTEMBER 11 - 17 , 2018
When you think of farming, you probably don’t think of drones and robots. Nevertheless, farmers everywhere are using these technologies to increase the productivity of their farms and the quality of their crops. Here are just a few of the latest types of technological advances that are currently shaping the agricultural industry. Drones. Also known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), drones are one of the most important new technologies in agriculture today. Farmers use them to spray fertilizers and pesticides on crops, thereby reducing the amount of manual labour involved in performing these tasks. Drone technology can also be used to monitor crop fields and livestock, and create aerial maps using GPS technology to help with crop planning and land management. Agricultural robots. Agrobots are increasingly being used to harvest crops and carry out other simple tasks. Unlike human workers, robots are not in danger of hurting themselves when working long hours and performing repetitive tasks, and can be used when there are labour shortages. Air and soil sensors. Sensors are installed on farms to monitor temperature and moisture levels in the air and soil, and generate real-time data about the environmental con ditions affecting crops and livestock.
