Jerry was born October 26, 1941, to Thomas and Dorothy (Kleckner) Bambery in Clouquet, MN. On August 17, 1963, Jerry married the love of his life, Marilu Stucki. His job at McDonald’s spanned his entire working career. From starting out as a crew person, he advanced through the ranks of management and supervision. He was considered one of the company’s pioneers as part of growing, developing and expanding the Midwest region of McDonald’s. They began with one restaurant (Hwy 169) and six months later, took ownership of a second restaurant (Madison Avenue). Over the years, they continued to expand operations, and in doing so, continued to make a difference in the lives of their countless employees as well as the communities in which they did business.

Different ways to finance senior living • Line of credit: A loan system called an “Elderlife Line of Credit,” enables multiple family members or friends to share the cost of paying for eldercare. • New location: Finding a community in locations with more manageable cost of living expenses may be the best way to maintain your standard of living without breaking the bank.
HOME MAGAZINE I OCTOBER 2 - 8, 2018
Upon retiring, many seniors downsize to all-inclusive independent living communities. These communities provide all various amenities without asking seniors to negotiate the obstacles of traditional home ownership. Although senior living apartments or condominiums often may great living arrangements, all-inclusive properties tend to cost more money than standard apartments. Interested parties may experience a bit of sticker shock initially before looking for ways to finance their new living arrangements. • Long-term care insurance: Individuals who plan ahead can invest in long-term care insurance. This insurance may be able to cover the costs of some housing facilities, or help finance outside private caregiver assistance. • Life insurance policies: Some insurance policies can be cashed in for a percentage of their face value. This money can then be used to offset the costs of senior housing. • Home sale profit: Many seniors sell their homes and pay for new living situations with the return on those sales. Bridge loans can help as seniors wait for their homes to be sold.

How to avoid ending up on charity mailing lists Giving to charity is a selfless act that is often inspired by donors’ compassion for their fellow man. Helping the less fortunate is its own reward, but after donating, donors may find themselves on charity mailing lists, an unfortunate consequence that oftentimes is preventable. Solicitations from charities are not intended to annoy past or prospective donors. However, such requests can prove to be a nuisance, making donors feel as if they’re being punished for helping their favorite charities. While donors might not be able to guarantee they will avoid ending up on charity mailing lists, the following tips can make such a development less likely. • Properly vet charities before donating. Read the fine print before donating to a particular charity. Many charities promise prospective donors that their personal information will not be shared, sold or traded to other charitable organizations or entities. While reading a charity’s donor privacy policy might seem dull, it’s the only way for donors to ensure they won’t end up on a mailing list. • Opt out of information sharing when making donations. Donors may have to opt out of information sharing during the process of making their donations. Before signing off on a donation, make sure you have opted out. Charities may ask online donors to check a box at checkout, while others may ask donors to notify them of their wishes to opt out via phone, snail mail or email.
• Avoid making small donations to various charities. The charitable giving resource Charity Navigator notes that donors who make many small donations to various charities are almost certain to end up on mailing lists. Charity Navigator recommends donors who want to avoid ending up on mailing lists conduct careful research into charities they like, as doing so might compel them to concentrate their giving to a particular charity, thereby reducing the likelihood that they end up on mailing lists. • Make anonymous donations. Anonymous donations can shield donors from unwanted mailings and solicitations. Donors should still read a charity’s donor privacy policy to make sure that anonymous donations are protected. In addition, prior to donating donors should confirm that anonymous donations are still eligible for potential tax deductions. Unwanted mailings can make donors feel as if they’re being punished for donating to their favorite charities. But there are ways to donate without ending up on mailing lists.

Tips to improve memory the National University of Ireland in Galway, the study following more than 27,000 people in 40 countries for an average of roughly five years. All participants were 55 and older and had diabetes or a history of heart disease, stroke or peripheral artery disease. Those who ate the healthiest diets were 24 percent less likely to experience cognitive decline than people with the least healthy diets. • Break things down. Breaking things down into small chunks also can help improve memory. If tasked with remembering something extensive, such as a speech, focus on a single sentence at a
time, only moving on to the next sentence when you’re confident you have successfully committed the preceding sentence to memory. Periodic memory lapses are often nothing to worry about. But men and women concerned about maintaining their memories can employ various strategies to do just that.
A diet that includes lots of vegetables can help men and women reduce their risk for cognitive decline.

Forgetfulness can affect anyone. For example, few, if any, adults can say they have not experienced moments when they could not find their keys. And once the keys are found, people move on without giving much thought to why they did not immediately remember where they left their keys. Isolated incidents where people cannot recall where they placed their car keys or other minor bouts with forgetfulness do not occur by accident. In fact, the Harvard Medical School notes that they are likely byproducts of age-related changes in thinking skills. When people reach their 50s, chemical and structural changes in the brain may begin to occur, and these changes can affect a person’s ability to process memories. Father Time may be a formidable foe, but people can take steps to give their memories a boost as they get older. • Embrace recognition instead of trusting recall. Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist who specializes in behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, notes that human beings are better at recognition than recall. That means people are more likely to remember something they read, such as a note or a list, than something they’re simply told. • Recognize the value of repetition. The Harvard Medical School notes that people might be more inclined to remember what they hear if they repeat it out loud. Names and addresses might be more easily remembered after they’re repeated out loud because repetition increases the likelihood that the brain will record the information and be capable of retrieving it later. When studying for exams, many students repeat important points to themselves time and again, and that same approach can be applied by adults who are trying to improve their memories. • Eat a healthy diet. A study published in 2015 in the journal Neurology found that people who eat healthy diets with lots of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and fish and little alcohol and red meat may be less likely to experience declines in their memory and thinking skills. Authored by Andrew Smyth of McMaster University in Ontario and

Different generations can learn and benefit from one another In the not-so-distant past, extended families frequently lived in close proximity to one another. Such families shared meals and experiences and essentially grew up together. Nowadays, families separate for various reasons, such as job opportunities and cost of living concerns. While there are advantages to spreading out, there are also some disadvantages, namely that grandparents and grandchildren may not see one another frequently enough. Even though people of different age groups may not entirely have the same interests, the interactions between generations can benefit both young people and their aging relatives.
to age in place in mixed-age communities can extract joy from watching youthful children and young adults growing up, playing and socializing. Being around multiple generations also can spark interesting conversation, and all parties involved can learn something from one another.
Learning new technology
Younger generations can impart knowledge of technological devices to older adults. People with skills are usually happy to share their knowledge. Even if seniors aren’t ready to purchase tablets or smartphones, they may be excited to have their grandchildren teach them about the latest gadgets.
Finding renewed vigor Senior living and active lifestyle communities provide invaluable care and amenities for seniors. While being around like-minded individuals can be handy, it’s also limiting. Seniors who continue

Both seniors and younger generations can realize a greater sense of purpose when interacting with one another. That person may be the reason the other one greets the day with a smile. Visits from grandchildren can reduce the liklihood of isolation and depression in older adults. Practicing interpersonal skills
All the technological savviness in the world cannot compensate for the power of strong interpersonal skills. Being able to address a group of people or speak one-on-one is essential in the workplace and in life. 1. SPEAK TO YOUR AUDIENCE AND NO ONE ELSE. Attempting to connect with everyone will only weaken the message you’re trying to convey.
Contact your Home Magazine sales representative for additional tips on HOW TO MAKE YOUR NEXT AD CAMPAIGN A SUCCESS!
507-387-7953
2. CRAFT A POWERFUL HEADLINE to capture the attention of your target audience. 3. SELECT ONE MAIN IMAGE for your design, and make sure that it ties in with the ad’s overall message. 4. OPTIMIZE YOUR COPY. Choose the right words to clearly communicate why the product or service you’re selling is exactly what your audience needs. 5. EMBRACE WHITE SPACE. Don’t let superfluous clutter distract your audience from the key points in your ad. 6. LIMIT YOUR OFFERS TO TWO. Less is more when it comes to advertising. Including too much information will only confuse your audience. 7. MAKE YOUR AD VISUALLY APPEALING by grouping similar elements together, limiting the number of typefaces you use and choosing colors wisely. 8. STAND OUT WITH COLORS. A full-color ad on an otherwise black-and-white page is sure to draw the eye, and the opposite — monochromatic in a sea of colors — is equally true. 9. ALWAYS INCLUDE A CALL TO ACTION. What do you want people to do after they’ve read your ad? Sign up for your service? Visit your showroom? Let them know! 10. KEEP CONTACT INFORMATION CRYSTAL CLEAR. Potential buyers need to instantly know how and where to reach you.
