Understanding the process of soil formation teaches us that it is not everlasting and that better methods of soil management have to be developed. The type of soil depends on the ambient materials and micro-environmental conditions. Soil materials as well as environmental factors such as drainage, rainfall, difference in altitude, temperature, and vegetation all determine the type of soil and the speed of its formation. The organic material of soil is formed by the accumulation of plant and animal residues at different stages of decomposition. As these materials are being continuously degraded by microorganisms in the soil, which contains billions of bacteria. This

organic matter is transient and should be regularly renewed with the addition of new plants or new animal residues. The percentage of organic matter in soil is low, but it plays an important role in soil properties and plant development. It improves soil structure and assists, among other things, in the granulation of mineral particles. It improves the water retention capacities of the soil and plant production. It is also a source of nutrients, providing mineral elements such as phosphorous, sulphur, and nitrogen. Lastly, it is also the principle source of energy for soil organisms. Soil conditions have to allow for the absorption of these nutrients by root systems. In order to create these conditions, the following basic soil needs have to be met: soil aeration, water, decomposition of residues, and soil fertility.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) today announced new restrictions on the use of the herbicide dicamba in Minnesota for the 2018 growing season. Dicamba is primarily used for controlling post-emergence broadleaf weeds. The new restrictions are in addition to those announced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in October. The affected formulations are XtendiMax by Monsanto, Engenia by BASF, and FeXapan by DuPont. The decision follows the MDA’s ongoing investigation and an informal survey last summer into reports of crop damage from alleged dicamba offtarget movement.

In an effort to prevent dicamba-related complaints in 2018, Minnesota Agriculture Commissioner Dave Frederickson thoroughly reviewed the new EPA label restrictions, the MDA’s survey results, peer reviewed literature, and sought extensive input from the Minnesota Soybean Growers Association Drift Task Force, University of Minnesota Extension weed scientists and the pesticide manufacturers on the underlying causes of damage. Based on the review, the Commissioner set forth these additional protocols for dicamba use for the 2018 growing season: Cutoff date: Do not apply after June 20. Cutoff temperature: Do not apply if the air temperature of the field, at the time of application, is over 85 degrees Fahrenheit or if the National Weather Service’s forecasted high temperature for the nearest available location for the day exceeds 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Research has shown that dicamba volatilization injury increased with an increase in temperatures. “Dicamba is an important tool for soybean growers to manage weeds and I believe these additional restrictions will minimize the off-target movement,” Frederickson said. “I want to thank the University of Minnesota Extension, and in particular Professor Jeff Gunsolus, for his research report on dicamba and the Minnesota Soybean Growers for their input on this important issue. We will be closely monitoring the herbicide’s performance with these restrictions in 2018.”

DON’T JUST THROW YOUR HOME MAG IN THE RECYCLING BIN WHEN YOU ARE DONE WITH IT!

HERE A FEW OTHER IDEAS YOU CAN TRY:

1. Clean windows or glass. Use with water & vinegar for a no streak shine. 2. Burn it up. Tightly rolled newspapers make great fire starters!

3. Make a weed barrier. Lay a thick layer down before your mulch or rocks to help stop weeds from appearing. 4. Wrap some gifts.

5. Pack it up. Instead of plastic bubble wrap, wrap valuables in newspaper for shipping or moving 6. As origami paper.

7. In the fridge. Keep the bottom of the veggie drawer from getting nasty by lining it with newspaper. It will absorb liquid and odors.

8. For ripening fruit. If you’ve picked up some under-ripe peaches, avocados, or other fruit, wrap them in newspaper to ripen them more quickly.

9. Shine on. Give the shine back to your stainless steel sink by gently scrubbing it with wadded up, wet newspaper. 10. Compost it. 11. Papier mache. 12. Line the puppy crate.
