The Right Brew Making beer and wine have become more than a business for Bev Stevens.
by Sara Gilbert Frederick When her husband decided to start a small wine and beer brewing business in 2008, Bev Stevens intentionally stayed out of the way. Bev and Gordon Stevens had already spent 30 years running Independent Paint and Flooring sideby-side. When Gordon mentioned that he wanted to diversify during what was a particularly painful time for the home improvement industry, Bev told him to go for it. So he opened Brew-N-Wine Creations next door to Independent Paint and Flooring with his partner, Don Kaiser. “I thought that after all that time, I should just let him have fun with this,” Bev says. “It was Gordon’s passion. I was just going to be the taste tester.” But then both Gordon and Don were diagnosed with cancer in the winter of 2012. When Gordon died that spring, Bev started playing a more active role in the business. “It was all Greek to me,” she admits. “I didn’t think I’d ever learn enough. Don helped out quite a bit—he was a wonderful teacher. There was just so much for me to learn.” Now, Bev is doing the teaching. She runs BrewN-Wine Creations with the help of four part-time employees and speaks fluently about both the wine making and beer brewing processes. She bottles her own wine, both to drink herself and to give as gifts to friends and family. Gordon’s passion, she says, has become her’s as well. “I have learned an awful lot already—more than I thought I was going to when this started,” she says. “It’s a lot of fun.” continued...

One Stop Shop Brew-N-Wine Creations still sits adjacent to Independent Paint and Flooring, although it now occupies a much larger space than it did when it opened in 2008. There’s a spacious retail area, where wine and beer kits—and all of the equipment needed to use them—are available. There’s also room for classes and demonstrations and a designated space for YouBrew sessions, where individuals and groups make wine using provided equipment. “YouBrew is very popular, especially with groups,” Stevens says. “You come in, rent our equipment and start your kit—and then you come back six or eight weeks later and bottle it. We move it along in the meantime, so it’s ready when you come back.” Customers who come for YouBrew appreciate the social experience, the convenience of being able to use the space and equipment, and the end product they’re able to take home. But customers who take classes or come in to purchase equipment come with a different agenda. “They’re very serious about it,” Stevens says. “They want to learn the process, they want to understand how to do it themselves.” The store carries everything for those people as well. The wine kits, for example, include all of the ingredients necessary to make a complete batch. “Everything you need for the wine is in the kit,” Stevens says. “All you need is the equipment, which is a onetime buy, and then bottles and corks. And you can get it all here.” Everything you need to brew beer is there, too, from stainless steel brew pots that will last a lifetime to bottles and growlers to store. Stevens has been surprised by how sophisticated brewers are. “The pot costs $309,” she says. “But they’ll say that it’s
something you’ll put in your will. That’s how seriously they are about beer making.” When Beer-N-Wine Creations first opened in 2008, the focus was more on wine than beer. Although interest in wine has remained constant since then, interest in brewing beer has grown substantially. More than half of the retail space is devoted to ingredients and supplies for beer making. “It surprises me that it’s grown so big,” Stevens says. “There are just a lot of brewers out there; I think more people are making beer than wine right now.” She credits the increasing popularity of craft beers and breweries for some of the growth. It piques people’s interest and gets them excited to try it on their own. Plus, there’s so much to learn, “They love to experiment with the yeast and the hops,” Stevens says. “They try all kinds of things. And then they come in to tell us about it. They come in happy, even when they’re telling us about a batch they had to throw away.”
with something they’ll be able to drink in as little as six months—but that they also work on a kit that has to age a little longer as well. That way they can enjoy something right away and not be tempted to uncork a bottle that isn’t ready yet. “If you open it early, you’re not getting what you paid for,” she says. “It just gets better with time.” So does the business. Over the past three years, Stevens has handed day-to-day control of Independent Paint and Flooring to her daughter, Amanda. Now Brew-N-Wine is her primary concern—besides her granddaughters, that is. She’s arranged her schedule so that she can take care of Amanda’s infant daughter every morning and then work in the afternoon and evening at the shop. It’s been a fun change for her. The work can be physically demanding, she says, but it isn’t stressful. She’s enjoyed meeting the people who come in and become regulars at the store. “Almost everyone who comes in here is happy,” she says. “They like to talk. It makes it so much fun. “I’ll do this until I retire,” she adds. “But this is too Before Brew-N-Wine, Bev Stevens didn’t drink much fun to retire, so that might be hard to do.” wine. “It didn’t agree with me,” she says. “I would choose a beer or a mixed drink instead of wine. Now, it’s my drink of choice.” The change started during her taste-testing days. She remembers being surprised by how much she enjoyed the sips of Gordon’s first few batches. “It was so much better than anything I’d had before—it tasted so good,” she says. “I thought that there must be something different about it.” She’s partial to dry reds, particularly Italian reds— which she makes herself. Her favorites are more complex wines, which require more time to age than others. She generally suggests that beginners start

Winter can be a beautiful time of year, particularly when freshly fallen snow blankets the landscape. However, winter is also a time fraught with potential peril. The same winter weather that makes landscapes so pristine can make roads and walkways — and even being outside — dangerous. The U.S. Department of Transportation says weather-related vehicle crashes killed 6,253 people last year and injure more than 480,000 per year. These accidents most often occur when roadways are wet, snowy or icy. Yet, winter driving is not the only seasonal hazard. Here are some common winter activities and how to avoid getting hurt when engaging in them.
Driving
Roof snow removal Removing snow from a roof can be a dangerous prospect. Always use the appropriate equipment, which includes telescoping poles, rather than climbing on slippery roofs. This may be a job best left for a professional, who will have fallarrest systems and nonslip safety boots.
Dressing for conditions Venturing outdoors for winter fun may be enticing, but never put your health at risk for the sake of fun. The Mayo Clinic says hypothermia is a medical emergency that occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can produce heat, causing a dangerously low body temperature. Wear appropriate clothing to prevent hypothermia, which may not produce any initial symptoms. If shivering stops or confusion and slurred speech set in, severe hypothermia is in effect and a person should be moved indoors and gently warmed. Mild hypothermia is also possible indoors, typically when the elderly spend several hours in poorly heated homes. Winter may be beautiful, but it also can be hazardous. Taking precautions and using common sense help avoid dangerous situations.
Snow removal Shoveling or removing snow by various methods can be strenuous work, taking even those who feel they are in good shape by surprise. A 2011 study conducted by researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital found that an average of 11,500 snowshoveling-related injuries and medical emergencies were treated in U.S. emergency departments each year from 1990 to 2006. Lower back injuries, falls, injuries to the arms and hands and cardiac-related injuries account for many of the incidents sustained while removing snow. There’s also the risk of injury from collisions with pedestrians and snow plows. Plows and bobcat-type devices can cause serious injury. Exercise caution when operating such machines.

Exercise extra caution when driving on roadways during the winter, as they may contain ice or snow. All it takes is a small coating of precipitation on roadways to make driving treacherous. Wet-looking roadways may be wet, or they may be covered by ice, and it’s difficult to tell the difference with the naked eye. Always slow down and assume you are driving on ice. Make every effort to improve visibility. This includes checking windshield washer fluid levels and ensuring windshield blades are in good working order.

Thrill of the Hill Locals may think they know what happens at Mount Kato every winter. Between the ski swap, the chalet, downhill skiing and snow tubing, there are a variety of activities for adolescences to adults. However, did you know there is another addition to this mountain haven? If you haven’t guessed it already, the Mankato Area Adaptive Ski Program (MAASP) has gone above and beyond expectations over the past 17 years. This program started in early 2000 and has been thriving ever since. It provides lifeenriching experiences for individuals with disabilities through skiing and offers an opportunity for individuals to flourish through recreational activities and continuing education. This program has been well received over the years and has roughly 15 students and 30 volunteers. There are a variety of volunteers with diverse talents. Some are professional ski instructors, students from Minnesota State University, Mankato and other members of the Mankato community. All have a passion for supporting the disabled community and skiing. Because of the autonomy between the volunteers and students this program

has influenced many lives and continues today. This would not be a successful program without the generous volunteers and the collaboration of Smiles, Mt. Kato and the Mankato Area Public Schools. On Sunday afternoons during the winter season out at Mt. Kato, you will witness the partnership between the staff and students. From ages six to 30, the skiers get suited up to experience the “Thrill of the Hill.” Some students use the traditional stand-up skiing style while a handful might use the sit-n-ski or a mono ski. The volunteers harness the students for safety while giving instructions on how to get down the hill safely and swiftly. Their motto is three simple concepts: Safety. Fun. Learning. For some this is new experience, for others this is a time to rekindle their love for skiing after an accident but for all it is mostly fun!
Why is this program so beneficial for the Mankato community?
Hayden Maertens, who is in his second year of working with MAASP and studying recreational therapy, explains why this was a perfect fit for him. “The MAASP allows opportunities from a variety of different avenues. It emphasizes virtues such as honesty, responsibility, hard work, kindness and determination,” he says. He goes further about the importance of the volunteers and the Mankato community. “Individuals with disabilities have a recreational opportunity that they would not have if it wasn’t for the partnership of the Mankato community. The volunteers are able to get involved in things they are passionate about such as skiing and supporting people with disabilities. Local businesses such as Mt. Kato are able to host a program like this, while other businesses are able to contribute to the yearly fundraiser.” This program is a beautiful collaboration of what the Mankato community is all about. One thing to highlight is how the younger generation is taking strides as they learn from longtime volunteers. From the voice of the younger generation, there is an invitation for role models to lead the way to bettering the community. The intention to keep the next generation’s attention to being a part of a community like this is essential. That is why it is important for influential leaders to take action to continue to pave the way. Maertens wanted to volunteer. “By volunteering I am able to contribute to the community as well as learn more about what opportunities are available to a new graduate.” The long-term volunteers play a role to instill the importance of being a part of something bigger than them while enjoying the process along the way. This program is growing more and more each year. There is always room for volunteers. If you can ski backwards, donate equipment or cheer others on then you qualify! To volunteer or find more information go to Mankato Area Adaptive Ski Program on Facebook.

Here what’s happening with MAASP and Mt. Kato: • MAASP also works with Gillette’s Children Hospital in St. Paul to provide a ski day at Buck Hill in Burnsville. This is a collaboration with Buck Hill staff as well as volunteers from the Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Center in Golden Valley Minnesota. • MAASP has even extended skiing lessons for local school field trips. This summer MAASP are introducing an additional water ski program that will be much like the winter sports. • If you have a fifth grader then they qualify for 3 FREE lift tickets for skiing or snowboarding at Mt. Kato. Grab the grandkids for this special event! Call for details! • Saturday nights in the Mt. Kato Lift Bar features live entertainement. National Park Lodges
Offer Inexpensive Winter Retreats
HOME MAGAZINE I FEBRUARY 7 - 13, 2017
By Kay and David Scott - CNHI Travel Writers Most of us consider visiting a national park during the summer, when temperatures are warm and children are out of school. This makes summer the season when the parks are most crowded and their lodges full. Although many national park lodges close during the winter, some are open year-round. Travelers in those months are likely to discover a more intimate experience and, occasionally, a better price on a room. Wuksachi Lodge - Photo Courtesy of Kay and David Scott We have selected five national park lodges to consider for a winter visit. We’ve stayed in each on a number of occasions. Yellowstone and Yosemite offer winter Wuksachi Lodge, Sequoia National Park California lodging, as well, but we wanted to choose some that you are likely to overlook. Wuksachi is composed of three virtually identical buildings with guest rooms plus a nearby building with the registration area, gift shop, lobby and dining room. David and Kay Scott are authors of The facility was built in 1999 on a forested hillside, and most guest rooms offer mountain and forest views. The registration building includes a comfortable lounge “Complete Guide to the National Park Lodges” (Globe Pequot). where guests gather to talk and play cards or board games. Visit them at www.valdosta.edu/~dlscott/Scott The restaurant has a wall of windows offering excellent views. Snowshoes and cross-country skis are available for rent in the gift shop. Rooms in January and February can be booked for about $100 per night. For more information visit www.visitsequoia.com/lodging

Chisos Mountains Lodge, Big Bend National Park, Texas Big Bend is an out-of-the-way park with its southern border along the Rio Grande River. It is also one of our favorite parks to visit. Summers can bring brutal temperatures and winters can sometimes be cold, but the landscape is simply breathtaking any time of year. The lodge offers several types of rooms, most in motel-type buildings. A few stone cottages are also available. Most rooms are a relatively short walk from the registration building, which also houses the dining room. Rates during January and February run about $145 per night. For more information visit www.chisosmountainslodge.com

While the South Rim’s famed El Tovar Hotel will be closed for renovations during winter 2017, Bright Angel Lodge remains open for business. Bright Angel is a series of cabins, several with suites, and dorm-style buildings adjacent to an historic main registration building. The least expensive dorm rooms require that guests use a community bathroom, however most rooms at Bright Angel have their own facilities. Most of these units are near the rim and eating facilities. Our favorite units are the Rim Cabins, two of which have a fireplace. Rates range from $97 for lodge rooms without a private bath to $210 for Rim Cabins with a fireplace. For more information visit visit www.grandcanyonlodges.com/lodging/bright-angel
The Blue Ridge Parkway, one of our favorite drives, hosts two national park lodges, only one of which is open during winter, and then only on weekends. Peaks of Otter Lodge is in the northern section of the parkway, about 30 miles northeast of Roanoke. Three, two-story buildings with recently renovated guest rooms sit on a grassy hillside above a small lake. A separate building contains the registration area, gift shop and dining room. The quiet and relaxing atmosphere at Peaks of Otter is a contrast to the oftenhectic stay at lodges in many of our country’s other national parks. Winter rates are just above $100 per night. Zion Lodge, Zion National Park, Utah Several friends who are avid travelers consider Zion the most underrated national park in the country. They may well be correct. Zion is a beautiful park, and fortunately its lodging facility is open year-round. Zion Lodge consists of two attractive motor lodge buildings, 40 cabins and a main lodge that houses a restaurant, lobby, gift shop, and registration area. Cabins were remodeled in 2013-14, have fireplaces and are constructed two to four to a building. All of the guest rooms are within easy walking distance of the dining room. Nightly rates run from $140 to $150. For more information visit www.zionlodge.com

Mankato has had an increasing impact on the culture in southern Minnesota. Among that growth happens to be the film-making community. Believe it or not, Bethany Lutheran College has an outstanding media arts program that has now received recognition in the filming industry. Its Speechless Film Festival has made its mark, attracting filmmakers from as far away as Poland to right here in our own back yard. This festival has been an ongoing event in Mankato for the past four years. What started off to be an event to inspire students to cultivate their creativity has now become a local favorite to the Mankato art community.
What’s this all about? The Speechless Film Festival goes beyond sitting in a seat while eating popcorn. Speechless is an international film festival, presented by Bethany Lutheran College, for students, film professionals and the community. This three-day event is packed full with off-your-seat action and entertainment. There are a variety of film showcases, live entertainment, exclusive VIP parties and so much more. “Without leaving the comfort of southern Minnesota, visitors to The Speechless Film Festival are able to witness films from around the world,” says Denise Woller, the coordinating photographer for the event. “This young festival is a tremendous event where you are able to see films made both locally and abroad.”

The foundation of filmmaking is built on visual content. Over the course of many decades, this art for has been lost in translation as modern films primarily depend on dialogue. This event has re-rooted filming to its original origin. The quality of the films combined with the competitive drive from the filmmakers, produced short clips beyond expectations. The films are often short with little to no dialogue and represent a variety of genres, including documentary, drama, experimental, animation and many others. In short, Speechless celebrates visual story telling. “Speechless provides a unique arts experience and valuable educational opportunity for students to connect with visiting speakers and filmmakers.” Says Program Director Amanda Quist. “As the festival has grown, our film submission process has become more competitive, so the quality of our films have gotten better. This is a red carpet experience right downtown.” Bethany Lutheran College created this event in 2013. The students and faculty in the visual arts program have spent countless hours expanding the boundaries on what this event has become. The support of the Mankato community has helped it grow. A number of venues have participated, including the Front St. Mixed Use Building, Pub 500, Studio Six, ISG, Kato Ballroom, the Mankato Event Center and more than 40 sponsors. The value of what this event brings to Mankato is noted by increasing opportunities. This is a very unique and inviting opportunity that happens to be right at your fingertips! Yes, this event is open to the public with a very affordable admission. Plus, this will be an experience that you cannot find anywhere else.
Want to Attend?
The fifth annual Speechless Film Festival will occur Thursday – Saturday, March 16-18, 2017. The screening venue will be the Verizon Wireless Center at 1 Civic Center Plaza, Mankato. Tickets may be purchased online at www. speechlessfilmfestival.com . Ticket prices range from $12 to $50 for a VIP Festival Pass.
