Keep tabs on the temperature If you don’t already have one, purchase and install a programmable thermostat for your furnace or for the rooms that are heated with electric baseboard heaters. Program it, or them, to heat your home to 68° during the day (leave curtains open to allow the sun to heat rooms as well) and 65° at night or when you’re away. And leave the t-shirts ’til summer—put on a sweater! Ditch the drafts If you can’t invest right now in an expert analysis on energy leakages in your home, do your own walkabout and take note of drafty windows, doors, and vents. Repair any old weatherstripping around them or install it new where drafts have appeared. When you’re at home and heating the house to 68°, close the doors and heating vents into rooms and other spaces that you’re not using and that don’t need to be heated. Lose your old lighting habits Whenever one of your old incandescent bulbs burns out, replace it with an energy efficient compact fluorescent bulb (CFL) or LED light. Get into the habit of turning out the lights when you leave a room. A small LED nightlight is a great way to keep hallways and kitchens glowing when you still want a cozy light on elsewhere in the house.

Exterior siding to dress up your home One of the most important renovating decisions a homeowner will make concerns exterior siding. Not only does your home’s siding protect you from the elements but it also determines its appearance. Here are a few recommendations to help you find your way through the maze of different types, qualities, and styles of siding that are available on the market. Vinyl Because of its affordable cost as well as the many choices in format and color, vinyl is gaining ground in the popularity stakes. Scratch and shock resistant, vinyl is easy to install and is designed to last. However, this material can contract or expand depending on temperature variations and can become slightly distorted if not installed properly. Although it is reasonably sturdy, vinyl can be affected by the wind and sun. Aluminum Available in various patterns and colors, aluminum is highly resistant to wind and changing weather conditions and its shape does not vary over the years. However, it is less resistant to shocks, which are liable to damage the siding. Stone and brick Sturdy and durable, stone and brick give homes a rich, warm appearance. It also makes them comfortable to live in and insulates them from exterior noise. Over the last few years, brick has lost some of its popularity, perhaps because of changing fashions or because of the cost of the material and installation. Wood Wood confers warmth, comfort, and beauty to homes. This type of siding is available in a wide range of patterns and finishes, allowing for lots of possibilities. However, wood requires a great deal of upkeep. A protective coat of paint or stain will have to be applied on a regular basis if you want to keep the original look of the wood and preserve it for years to come.
