Each February, the Heart and Stroke Foundation coo rdinates Heart Month, a campaign to increase awareness about heart disease and raise funds for life-saving research. Heart disease (the second leading cause of death in the country, behind cancer) and stroke complications currently affect over 1.6 million people. What’s more, an estimated 70,000 heart attacks and 40,000 cardiac arrests occur in each year. In the event of a heart attack or cardiac arrest, acting quickly can save a life.

Signs of a heart attack

Heart attack symptoms are not always severe, can occur gradually and may vary between individuals. However, the following are common warning signs: • Chest discomfort • Discomfort elsewhere in the upper body • Shortness of breath • Nausea • Light-headedness • Sweating If you notice these symptoms in yourself or someone else, call 911 immediately. While you wait for emergency services to arrive, take 325 mg of Aspirin and sit or lie down. Those who take nitroglycerin should take their regular dosage.

Cardiac arrest can affect anyone, even someone who’s young and in good health. It can occur suddenly and without warning. You can recognize cardiac arrest by the following signs: • Sudden collapse • Unresponsiveness to touch or sound • Abnormal or non-existent breathing

In the event of cardiac arrest, call 911 immediately. Do not hesitate to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) if one is available. Administer CPR by pressing hard and fast on the affected person’s chest. Do not stop until the person moves or help arrives.

Mall Walking for Greater Heart Health...

Making the decision to become heart healthy is the hardest part, but taking a daily walk has shown many benefits. Regular walking can help maintain your bone density, improve your sleep quality, and even contribute to clarity of mind and improved mood. You don[t have to run marathons or have any specialized equipment other than a good pair of shoes. The magic number for heart health and protection against certain cancers is 150 minutes of moderately intense physical activity per week, which can be divided up daily in as short as 10-minute segments. Extending your walks into winter months is a great way to harness year-round benefits, but when it’s wet and/or slippery, a popular trend has become known as “mall walking.” According to Madison East Mall manager, Rosie Brunmeier, there has been a steady increase throughout the years of people walking the mall. “We have three groups of walkers...we have the “Morning Breakfast Club” walkers, the “Employee Noon Hour” walkers, and finally the serious “After Work Hours” group of walkers. During the winter months we probably have over 100 people who walk the mall daily.” One of the benefits besides the physical aspect of mall walking is the social aspect. “I have seen a lot of good friendships form with not only the walkers, but also between the walkers and our tenants. They bond with each other. There are people here who have walked this mall for over 30 years,” says Brunmeier. Surprisingly, the walkers can chalk up a few miles very easily when they walk. If they walk all the corridors at Madison East Center Mall, the distance has been measured at ½ of a mile. The sedentary lifestyle (lack of movement) is the latest epidemic...but that is not the case at the Madison East Center Mall. Just remember your walking shoes.

She reflected on the series of events that occurred over the past few months. In the spring of 2010, Tom received the news that he had cancer and after 3 years of his battle, Deb had lost her husband. Shortly after, she had also lost her brother and more recently Deb has now lost her father to illness too. Throughout this emotional roller coaster Deb had also opened the doors on her new business, Lumiere Real Estate in 2016. With the amount of busyness overlapped by the series of life events it was more of a matter WHEN the next SCAD episode would happen unless there was a change. Deb states, “My SCAD attack was due to extreme emotional stress. I was strongly advised to get the stress out of my life. I’ve told many after losing loved ones to take care of their health but didn’t necessarily follow my own advice. Emotional stress does a great deal of damage over time.” After the loss of loved ones and her own wake up call, she decided to close the doors on Lumiere Real Estate and start making strides towards a new journey. Starting this new venture was learning what health really means, what action steps to take to prevent SCAD and creating a balanced lifestyle.

Each person copes with SCAD differently but there are resources, medication, regular follow–ups and being aware of your emotional health that can assist in a relapse or other SCAD events. Deb shares, “Because SCAD is so unknown there is still much research to be done. In the meantime, I go to the Cardiac Rehab Center where my heart is monitored as I do physical activity. This displays the rate of my endurance for physical activity. I have regular follow-ups with the incredible staff at MAYO. I’m also doing a genetics test for my children and wear a medical bracelet in case of any emergency.

When you hear the word heart attack, what comes to mind? You might think of a vivid scene where a person suddenly grabs their chest and drops to the floor. It’s a very serious and even fatal occurrence that happens more often than we realize. Statistics from the Minnesota Department of Health state that more than 18% of all deaths in Minnesota are due to heart disease (7,571 deaths in 2014), making it the 2nd-leading cause of death in the state behind cancer. However, there might be preliminary red flags to this event that we over look or don’t take serious. Local resident Deb Atwood shares her story that is not only changing her life but is impacting, empowering and bringing awareness to her community. Let’s dive into her journey.

Having the honor of sharing Deb’s story carries life and hope. It truly is an intricate and beautiful journey where pain brings a whole new avenue of opportunity. She continues to seek out the things she enjoys including: being outdoors, self-growth, being involved with her community, loving her family and of course her grandkids!

It was the evening of October 4th, 2016 when Deb was in deep slumber and awoke with an unknown pain. Her shoulder blades had discomfort that shot throbbing pain through her arms. Her initial though was indigestion but after hours of continuous discomfort she called her daughter who urged her to go to the ER. Once she was in the Mankato E.R. the doctors were unsure of the diagnosis. After a quick call to Cardiovascular Disease Specialist in Rochester she was diagnosed with Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection or SCAD.

Personal Reflection with Deb Atwood After reflecting on the past few years what has changed and what did you learn? I’ve learned not just from my heart attack but from the deaths of my husband, brother and father that life changes in a heartbeat. We are all on borrowed time. I never would have imagined that I would have lost three of the most precious people in my life in three years and had a heart attack on top of that – I’ve learned that trials make us stronger.

What is SCAD?

What Causes SCAD? Although the cause is not clear it could be a number of factors. Up to 80% of individuals who experience SCAD are women. However it can be found in all ages and gender. Some may link SCAD with Fibro muscular Dysplasia, connective tissue abnormalities, physical exhaustion from extreme activities or from extreme emotional stress.

What’s your message that you would like to share with others? Slow down! Be intentional in all things you do. So, take time to stop and smell the roses. Your wealth is in your health, which is balancing all aspects of body, spirit and soul. If you don’t know, GO! I waited hours until my daughter encouraged me to go to the ER. Hold those near and dear to you, all of them, because you never know when they will be gone. Therefore, I continue my journey and want others to appreciate and take time to treasure the many blessings in life.

What happens is you coronary artery tears and interrupts blood flow from the heart. This leads to abnormal heart rhythms, heart attacks and sudden death. This is a very uncommon condition because most people don’t even know it is happening. For example, imagine putting your arm into your jacket sleeve and your arm gets caught in the jacket’s lining. Now your arm is blocked and has nowhere to go. When the blood pools between the layers it starts to bulge and can block the blood flow to the heart.

What are your next steps for your journey ahead? I have left a career that I loved for 28 years but have no doubt that there is a new chapter out there for me. There is a plan and I trust that. My calendar has gone from being so full that I could barely keep up to almost blank. As a dear friend told me, it’s my blank canvas – to paint a future without all of the stress, taking care of my heart and truly appreciating what life has to give me. I have beautiful children, grandchildren, family and friends that make me smile on a daily basis and for that I am truly grateful.
