WHAT IS ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE? Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria become immune to the drugs commonly used to kill them. For example, when you take antibiotics to cure a bout of pneumonia, a few bacteria might survive the treatment. Over time, the surviving bacteria could potentially develop into a new kind of pneumonia that typical antibiotics can’t cure. Scenarios like this pose a real threat to humans and animals alike. PREVENTIVE MEASURES To combat the spread of antibiotic resistance, there are a number of precautionary measures that farmers can take. • • • •

Only administer medication to livestock according to a veterinarian’s recommendations. Avoid using antibiotics solely to prevent disease. Regularly vaccinate livestock to reduce the need for antibiotics. Practice and promote healthy practices at every stage of production and transformation of animal and plant products. • Adopt a sustainable system that favours biosecurity. • Prioritize farming conditions that respect the well-being of animals.

Understanding soil formation

Understanding the process of soil formation teaches us that it is not everlasting and that better methods of soil management have to be developed. The type of soil depends on the ambient materials and microenvironmental conditions. Soil materials as well as environmental factors such as drainage, rainfall, difference in altitude, temperature, and vegetation all determine the type of soil and the speed of its formation. The organic material of soil is formed by the accumulation of plant and animal residues at different stages of decomposition. As these materials are being continuously degraded by microorganisms in the soil, which contains billions of bacteria. This organic matter is transient and should be regularly renewed with the addition of new plants or new animal residues. The percentage of organic matter in soil is low, but it plays an important role in soil properties and plant development. It improves soil structure and assists, among other things, in the granulation of mineral particles. It improves the water retention capacities of the soil and plant production. It is also a source of nutrients, providing mineral elements such as phosphorous, sulphur, and nitrogen. Lastly, it is also the principle source of energy for soil organisms. Soil conditions have to allow for the absorption of these nutrients by root systems. In order to create these conditions, the following basic soil needs have to be met: soil aeration, water, decomposition of residues, and soil fertility.
