Since 1998, there has been a 384 percent increase in U.S. wineries. Wine consumption increased steadily in the 1970s and 1980s, but decreased in the 1990s. From 1989 to 1995, per capita consumption dropped from 2.3 gallons to 1.7 gallons. By 2012, U.S. wine consumption was 2.7 gallons per person

When farm women get together, you can learn a lot - such as “a veterinarian is a farmer’s best friend” and the 12th Commandment (“Thou shalt not compare yourself to thy neighbor”). Above all, you learn that women are strong partners in the family farm.

Annie’s Project is named after Annette Fleck, an Illinois woman married to a farmer for 50 years, from 1947 until her death in 1997. Annie spent her lifetime learning how to be an involved business partner with her farm husband. Today Annie’s Project, founded in 2003, educates farm women across 34 states.

This was AgStar’s first Annie’s Project session, which was capped at 20 participants. Amy Durand, AgStar product manager, was enthused by the full class and the wide cross section of demographics and roles on the farm. Of the 19 participants, 11 women were under age 30. “I’m pretty impressed by these young gals who are doing work on the farm; combining, hauling grain,” said Sharon Speck-Edwards, an Annie’s Project participant who lives in Good Thunder, Minn. At the first session, women were quick to introduce themselves and get to know each other. Laughter flowed and friendships formed. For Durand, those connections are the most important aspect of Annie’s Project.
Angela Guentzel, Chelsea Honnette and Jes Rollins, found they had a lot in common as young women on corn and soybean farms. They sat at a table together and settled in to a catered supper, visiting and learning. “It’s good to connect to other women in the area in similar situations,” said Guentzel, who lives and farms north of Mankato.
The young women found information they could take back to their farm. Rollins, of Pemberton, Minn., learned a lot from the session on financial statements, working capital, crop inputs, liabilities and assets.

Milking cows twice a day is the easy part,” said the 31-yearold Appel, who found good information in the marketing and blogging presentation. As a dairy farmer, Appel said she is well aware of the online negativity regarding dairy farming so itís likely that social media will play a role in her operation. “It’s a way to get yourself out there,” she said. For Appel, Annie’s Project is one tool to help her be successful after start-up, and she plans to complete the next two phases in the Annie’s Project curriculum.
