Helping a loved one adapt to a nursing home Many older men and women find the transition to a nursing home somewhat difficult. Men and women tend to see a move to a nursing home as a step toward surrendering their independence, and this can be a difficult hurdle for seniors and their loved ones to overcome. Adding to the difficulty is the fact that many men and women move into nursing homes because their physical or mental status requires the help of a professional nursing staff, leaving family members with little to no recourse when aging relatives protest the Lasting Imprint invites you to the

move. But there are ways to ease a loved one’s transition into a nursing home. * Keep a positive attitude. The stress of moving an aging relative into a nursing home can be significant for all parties involved. But focusing on the positives of nursing homes, such as around-theclock care and daily activities, can help aging relatives look at nursing homes in a new light. In addition, family members who familiarize themselves with nursing homes will begin to see they are often great places for aging men and women to socialize with others their age while receiving the care and attention they need. When discussing the move to a nursing home, focus on these positives and your relative will be more likely to follow your lead. * Choose a nursing home that’s close to home. One of the more difficult parts of transitioning to a nursing home is the notion that men and women are leaving their lives behind once they move into a home. Choosing a nursing home that’s close to home and makes routine visits from friends and relatives possible enables men and women maintain a connection to their current lifestyle. A home that is miles and miles away from a person’s support system can foster feelings of isolation and loneliness. * Plan trips with your loved one. Just because an aging relative lives in a nursing home does not mean he or she can no longer travel. If a relative is healthy enough to travel, include them on family trips and outings. This includes more routine events like weekly Sunday dinners, kids’ sporting events and other extracurricular activities. The more involved your aging

It is 2 a.m. and that cough and stuffy nose you have been battling is still keeping you up. You reach for the nighttime cold relief medicine only to find it expired a few months ago. If you take a dose to ease your symptoms, will you be putting yourself at risk?
HOME MAGAZINE I May 7 - 13, 2013
This situation is a relatively common occurrence. Many medicine cabinets are stocked with over-the-counter drugs as well as prescription medications that may be past their expiration dates. It is a good idea to routinely discard expired medicines, but if you happen to take a drug that has passed its expiration date, you will most likely suffer no ill effects.
medicine is not the dates when a drug becomes hazardous. Rather, it marks the period of time after which a drug company can no longer guarantee the efficacy of the medication. Since 1979, drug manufacturers selling medications in the United States have been required by the Food and Drug Administration to stamp an expiration date on their products. This is the date until which the manufacturer can still guarantee full potency of the drug. Expiration dates also may be a marketing ploy. It doesn’t make financial sense to a company to have products on the shelves for years. Therefore, most drug manufacturers will not do long-term testing on products to confirm if they will be effective 10 to 15 years after manufacture.
FDA researchers tested more than 100 overthe-counter and prescription drugs. Around 90 percent were proven to still be effective long past the expiration date -- some for more than 10 years. Drugs that are stored in cool, dark places have a better chance of lasting because the fillers used in the product will not separate or start to break down According to the as they might in a warm, humid environHarvard Medical School Family Health ment. 17 Mother’s Day
The most beautiful gift is your presence It’s a no-brainer that to show your mom how much you love her you could shower her with gifts: flowers, chocolates, a gift certificate for a spa, or a new book she’s been waiting to read. But if you really want to touch her heart, don’t forget to give a little of the most precious gift all: your time. All the finest gifts in the world could never replace your presence. You could invite her to have brunch at her favourite restaurant or spend some time with her preparing some home cooked meals to freeze. You could take her for a walk in the park where you used to go together when you were young, which is sure to evoke many happy memories for both of you. Leaf through old photo albums together or ask her to tell you about the happiest times of her life. Laughter and even a few tears will likely accompany the stories.
No matter what your plans are for this May 12, be sure to spend some quality time with the person who raised you. In fact, why not make a resolution to set aside an entire day for your mom every year on Mother’s Day. She deserves it!

“Mommy” A little word filled with so much love “Mommy” is just a small, two-syllable word, and yet it is so important to every one of us. Often the first word spoken by babies, “Mommy” represents the magical heart of the ever-expanding universe of young children. The relationship between a child and its mother or mother figure cannot be compared to any other human relationship. In the best of worlds, “Mommy” evokes gentleness and firmness, kisses and hugs. She is the angel of the night come to rescue us from nightmares. She is the nurse who tends to scraped knees, the caregiver who dons an apron to prepare healthy meals, and the fairy who never forgets to make you a birthday cake. She is the one who feels the pain of your heartache and who will always defend you when you’re attacked.
Your mother is the one who knows you best, the one who helps you overcome obstacles and dreams of a beautiful future for you. She helps you build your confidence and surpass yourself. She shows you the value of wisdom rather than misplaced pride.
Make this Mother’s Day a time of gratitude. Thank your mom for guiding you and helping you become the adult you are today.
Baby birds grow up and leave the nest to lead their own lives. With maturity, a growing child learns discernment and sees parents for the human beings they are, with their strengths and weaknesses. Rather than spoiling their love, this discovery is often the source of a closer relationship for adult children and their mothers. Even if your childhood was less than ideal, the affection that unites you both will only grow as you understand that your mother did the best she could with the resources she had.
Mom, today the hugs are

rolling successfully on a regular basis is a big challenge. It’s not simply a question of casting the line and moving slowly through the water waiting for a fish to strike. Beginners often think it’s that easy, but the following suggestions will help them to reduce the time between bites.
Varying your speed and navigating in an “S” pattern are tricks which make a big difference when trolling. these natural or manmade structures as baitfish often hide there, so fishing in these areas makes it much easier to fool the predators into biting.
Finally, a combination of these two different techniques is the ideal way to improve your success when trolling. You’re going to be surprised by the results...
Changing direction from time to time can also increase your chances of a catch. For example, steering a boat in an “S” pattern allows you to cover more territory and discover favourable underwater structures. Fish have a tendency to stay close to

ishing in lakes, ponds, and streams is common practice but have you ever tried fast flowing rivers? It’s an amazing experience, even though conditions can be difficult. There are two ways to fish in rivers, depending on the strength of the current — fly fishing or fishing in pools. These difficult-to-access areas can be very gratifying to exploit, especially because they are often under-fished. Strong currents cause riverbed erosion, so fast flowing rivers usually have some deep pools where the current slows. Don’t neglect such zones, as
they create whirlpools that lift and mix many microorganisms that attract fish. Fishing with a light rod and using lures with sufficient lead is recommended. The farthest corners of these pools are always worth exploring. Jigging, using lures, or even casting with a simple rig and live bait are all efficient options. Just remember that you should retrieve your lure quickly, as it can easily snag in this type of water. Reduce the risk of snags by keeping your bait off the bottom and plenty of slack in your line. Keep your casts short and frequent, which is just
as efficient as casting far from shore. Even if you’re careful, the chances are your line will snag and break anyway. Be prepared to fix your rig quickly and efficiently.

Remember, the important thing is to keep casting: the more your line is in the water, the more likely you are to land a prize! Happy fishing!

First of all, it’s important to vary the speed of the boat. By accelerating just a touch, the lure tends to rise towards the surface. By slowing down, the opposite occurs, the bait or lure gradually sinking towards the bottom and becoming more vulnerable to all those fish on the lookout for prey. By trolling in this way, as well as stimulating the instincts of predators, the bait or lure will also change depths, giving you more chance of locating fish searching for food.

Don’t forget the shoreline
I
t may be difficult to imagine this, but many big fish hide in only a few feet of water next to a shoreline of no particular interest. Indeed, it is an error to believe that big
fish are inaccessible, always hiding in deep water. Pike and bass, in particular, are known to feed in shallow waters. Here are a few tricks to help you locate and catch them.
To locate a site where predators could be hiding, you must learn to observe and be attentive to the smallest of splashes. Small splashes announce the presence of the forage fish, fry, and frogs that bigger fish feed on, while large splashes reveal the predator’s arrival on
the scene. Angling near from a boat, casting toward submerged objects where the shore while slowly fish may be hiding can also crisscrossing from side to give good side. Making leader lines more durable and much less visible! monofilament leader lines in tackle boxes. Available in all sizes, this kind of line has little elasticity and is invisible in the water. Once your rig is set, all you have to do is attach the leader to the main line with a swivel. This will ensure the durability and subtlety of the rig while speeding up bait changes.
Generally speaking, it is advisable to use a wire leader for species with sharp teeth. The reason for this is to prevent sudden line breakages that can put a premature end to the contest between angler and prey. Sometimes, though, this type of leader can spoil the subtlety of the rig in certain conditions and situations.
This method is also interesting because it allows anglers to use lightweight equipment with a small-diameter low-resistant line while using a personalized rig with a highcaliber fluorocarbon monofilament.
These days, an alternative to wire leaders is available on the market. It is increasingly common to find fluorocarbon
Why go to all the trouble? Because you’re a true sports angler, and this way you can enjoy the challenge of reeling in a big fish with your highly resistant rig! Are you ready to try it?

Naturally, fishing techniques vary according to the species of fish you hope to land. A trout has to be caught with finesse, whereas a pike has to be tricked onto your line. Anglers just have to learn to consider the habits of the target fish before making a final decision on the configuration of their rigs.

But again, it’s a metaphor for life; you have to keep digging in and learning new things. That’s a fact of life in Douglas’s chosen field, and one that made his position unique among his colleagues in the television newsroom.
Talking about the Weather Douglas laughs that sometimes people seem a little scared when they see him coming. He assumes it’s because he’s often been the bearer of bad news, especially when the weekend is coming. “Sometimes I feel like I’m more of a therapist than a scientist,” he jokes. “Especially with June

Even with modern computer models and Doppler radar, forecasts still aren’t perfect. They are certainly more precise that they were in the past; it’s unlikely, Douglas says, that another Armistice Day Blizzard could take Minnesotans by surprise. But there is still so much that isn’t known about how weather works, especially in the changing world we live in, to make guaranteed predictions. “We have made progress,” he says, “but we’ll never be 100 percent accurate.”
Senior Expo 2013
He isn’t at all surprised that people are often eager to talk to him—and to each other—about the weather, especially in Minnesota. For one thing, it’s a topic that always seems to be on our minds in a state that Douglas describes as “the Super Bowl of weather” because it has so many extremes. And unlike politics or religion, it’s a safe, comfortable topic for most people as well.

Learning more helps them understand what might happen when. They study mathematical formulas that describe how the Earth’s atmosphere is supposed to work in a perfect world. They learn the latest technology and work with sophisticated tools to help predict patterns better. But even when armed with all of that knowledge and knowhow, Douglas says that there is still an element of fear associated with storms and severe weather.
“I used to tell Don Shelby at WCCO, ‘Why don’t you go on the air and try to predict what the news is going to be?’” he says. “The same thing with Mark Rosen and sports; what would happen if he went out there and tried to predict what the scores were going to be? Meteorologists are the only ones crazy enough to try to predict the future— and to go public with our predictions. It’s kind of goofy when you think about it.”
Automotive/Recreation
Respecting the Storm Douglas says that many of his colleagues in meteorology share storm stories that are similar to his experience with Agnes. “Most people you see on TV as meteorologists were traumatized by something weather-related as kids,” he says. “That’s when they started tracking the weather and wanting to learn more.”

A Real Ringer
Even at 90, Harold Schrader remains one of the best horseshoe pitchers in the world. By Jean Lundquist
R
ick Wright, the president of the Minnesota Gopher State Horseshoe Pitchers Association, calls Harold Schrader “the shining star of horseshoe pitching in Minnesota.”
HOME MAGAZINE I May 7 - 13, 2013
“I’ve played him several times, and I’ve never won,” Wright says. “I’ve never even come close.” In 2012, the Easton resident took second place in the world championships in his class in Knoxville, Tennessee. To be a horseshoe pitcher of that caliber is to spread awe. But add to the story that Schrader is 90 years old, and it becomes even more awesome. Schrader didn’t even take
up league-style horseshoe pitching until after retiring from a career in farming, a stint in the Army and 20 years with Swift Eckrich. He was living in Mapleton at that time and walked past a court where a horseshoe league was playing. “I thought, ‘Well, I can do that,’” he recalls. He stopped to talk to the guys, and quickly signed up for the league. Although 1983 was the first time he had pitched horseshoes in a league, it was not his first brush with horseshoes. Schrader grew up on a farm just outside of Easton back in the days when all fieldwork was done with horses. “I went into the barn and found some old [horse] shoes, all kinds of sizes and shapes,” Schrader
remembers of his childhood. “Then I pounded a stake into the ground, and started throwing those. It seemed to work pretty good.”
Sweden, Japan and Canada, to name a few… There are enough teams to hold a two-and-a-half week tournament.”
Now Schrader throws regulation size horseshoes, each weighing two and a half pounds.
To even make it to the national tournament, Wright says, a player must “be at 60 percent or better for three years in a row.”
Schrader’s second place in the world championship competition in 2012 was the third time he had place so high. His moment of glory, however, came in 2006. That’s when he won first place in the world in the tournament held in Gillette, Wyoming. Wright puts that win into perspective. “Not every country does horseshoes, of course,” he explains. “But players do come from around the globe. There are players from Norway,

In 2006, Schrader was also inducted into the Minnesota Gopher State Horseshoe Pitchers Association Hall of Fame. “I’m really proud of that,” he says. Wright says a person can be inducted for two reasons: being a talented pitcher, or doing a lot of promotional work for horseshoe pitching. Schrader was inducted because of both. “Harold does both, and does both very well,” Wright says. As much as Schrader loves horseshoes, he has no courts in his Easton yard. “There’s a park about a block and a half from here, so I’ve never needed one,”
After he played in the leagues in Mapleton, he helped start a league in Easton. “That folded up three or four years ago,” he says. “I suppose it’s an old man’s game,” Schrader says, though Wright says Schrader is one of the best ambassadors and mentors of horseshoes to the young. Even without a league in Easton, Schrader has never wanted for people to pitch horseshoes with or against, thanks to his contacts in the horseshoe world. “One of the biggest leagues in Minnesota is in [North} Mankato at Wheeler Park,” he explains. “Those courts are bust at least four evenings a week.” Schrader says he has pitched horseshoes in nearly every horseshoe pit in southern Minnesota. According to Wright, there are 32 leagues in Minnesota, and between 1,500 and 1,800 semi-

serious pitchers in the state. Wright says there is a tournament somewhere in Minnesota every weekend throughout the summer. It might just be a very well kept secret how popular the sport is, he says. As for the question of what makes a good horseshoe pitcher, Wright believes it is a combination of luck, talent and practice. “Harold is very good at it – he’s just got ‘it,’” Wright says. “But there’s no question he puts a lot of time into practice.” Horseshoes pitching is scored in increments of either three points, or one. A “ringer” is achieved when a horseshoe gets around the stake. It doesn’t matter if it touches the stake or not, or whether or not the horseshoe is leaning up against the stake. One point is earned when a shoe lands within six inches of the stake. Six inches is the space between the two ends of a regulation-sized horseshoe. Schrader’s personal best was not when he won the World Championship, he says. It actually occurred in league play. Out of 50 shoes pitched, he had 42 ringers. Schrader sports an inexpensive horseshoe shaped ring on his right hand; he has a table full of awards and trophies in his living room to attest to his passion for the sport. It may be a competitive spirit, or it may be athletic prowess, but Schrader is also more than willing to point out that in 1953, he was on the Delavan baseball team that won the Town Baseball Championship. “Not bad for a farm boy,” he says.
Simple ways to avoid overspending as retirement nears
One way to get a grip on your spending is to keep a financial journal to track your daily and monthly expenses as well as larger purchases like a new television. Write down the monthly expenses you know you have each month, such as a mortgage payment or a car note, and each and every purchase you make, including how much you spend on dining out each month. Do this for at least a couple of months. When you have logged several months’ activity, examine your journal to see if there are any expenses that can be trimmed to save money.
• Take advantage of your “experience.” Though accepting a “senior” discount might be a blow to your pride, it also can be a boon to your bottom line. Many establishments, including gyms, restaurants and movie theaters, offer discounts to men and women age 55 and older. This can help you save a substantial amount of money over time, and no one has to know you’ve started cashing in on your experience.

• Pay with cash whenever possible. Swiping a debit card or credit card is certainly a convenient way to shop, but it can also be dangerous. Many people find it difficult to keep track of their spending when they use debit cards or credit cards to make their purchases. Using cash to make purchases, especially daily purchases like a morning cup of coffee,
• Keep a financial journal. Men and women who must adapt to having newfound disposable income may find it is not much different from younger men and women learning to manage their money when they first start working. Some of those lessons, like saving more than you spend, might need to be relearned.
• Don’t go overboard rewarding yourself. Once your last child has left the nest, the temptation to reward yourself with a luxury item or two might prove overwhelming. After all, raising a family and paying for college tuition has no doubt required substantial sacrifice on your part, so it’s well within reason that you want to reward yourself after all these years. Avoid overdoing it so your finances aren’t stretched too thinly. A vacation with your spouse is reasonable, but buying a villa overseas might be a little over the top. Luxuries can be nice, but they can also drain a budget. Your monthly expenses once the kids have moved out should be lower, so if you find your cost of living has increased now that your nest is empty, you might be forced to determine which of your expenses are luxuries and which are necessities.
HOME MAGAZINE I MAY 7 - 13, 2013
Though it’s understandable for men and women to splurge on a well-deserved getaway once the kids have finally left the house, it’s important for adults to ensure that such splurging does not become routine. The following are a few ways men and women with some newfound disposable income can avoid overspending and putting themselves in financial hot water as they get closer to retirement.
reduces the likelihood of overspending. This can help you get a better idea of how much money you’re spending and if there are any steps you can take to curtail that spending. An effective way to use cash is to withdraw money from the bank once per week and use that as your weekly supply of money. If you find yourself frequently running out of money each week, then you’re likely spending more than you should.

hen the nest is empty and the kids no longer need financial support, many men and women find themselves with some extra money in their budget. Fewer mouths to feed and no more college tuition bills can give parents a sense of financial freedom they may not have had since before starting their family. But that freedom can also lead to overspending, something that can put retirement in jeopardy if people are not careful.

Ten Tips for Better Health
Take April Graff ’s advice to feel better and stay healthier.
By Jean Lundquist
April Graff never knows what her day will be like when she reports to work in the morning. Some days, she gives guided tours through the aisles of the Hy-Vee stores in Mankato. Some days, she advises people with food allergies, diabetes, or those seeking to lose weight. Other days,
she teaches cooking classes and dispenses recipes. Graff is a licensed and registered dietician who has been employed by HyVee in Mankato since 2008 to help people decide how to eat healthier and with flavor. She splits her time between the two locations in Mankato, providing the same services at each.
count—they each offer many of the same nutrients. While fresh is often more visually appealing, it also requires chopping and peeling and results in more waste. With frozen items, it’s possible to prepare only as much as is needed at a single serving.
As a food expert, Graff has lot of tips to help people eat better and stay healthier. But she culled those down to 10 easy ideas that apply to everyone.
1. At every meal, make sure at least half your plate is filled with fruits and vegetables. Fresh, canned or frozen all
3. Move every day. Exercise, and especially weight lifting, is important for good health. But weight

2. Eat protein at every meal. Protein is found not only in meat and fish, but also in nuts, lentils and beans. Graff says that protein becomes more and more important in our diet as we age.
lifting doesn’t mean buying or using dumbbells, she explains. Hoisting a can of soup counts as lifting weight, too, she says. Lifting your own body weight is even better. That can be as simple as sitting down, standing up, and repeating. “When it comes to muscle, use it or lose it,” she says.

4. Drink more water. Graff advocates for six to eight glasses of water every day—even if you don’t feel thirsty. As we age, our thirst mechanism fades. In addition, many people take medications that may hinder the thirst mechanism, or require more water to work. Although many of the foods we eat each day deliver water to our body, pure water is the most efficient way to get the moisture we need. 5. Honor your hunger. Graff is not a member of the “Clean Plate Club,” and neither is her family. “Eat when you’re hungry, and stop when you’re satisfied, not full,” she says. Many times we eat because it’s time, because we’re bored or because we’re in a social setting that seems to demand we eat. “If we eat because we’re hungry, we know when to stop,” she explains. 6. Eat whole grains. But beware that packaging can be deceptive and misleading. “Because a bread wrapper says ’12-grain’ doesn’t mean it’s whole grain,” Graff cautions. She suggests reading the list of ingredients rather than
To taper down to an acceptable level of salt intake and accommodate our taste buds, Graff recommends moving to “low sodium” or ‘reduced sodium” products rather than moving directly to “no sodium added” foods. Salt is an acquired taste, and we need to wean ourselves off of it. 8. Eat breakfast every day. We’ve heard for years that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and Graff says that is true. “Breakfast gets our metabolism going, and fuels our brain and gets us thinking,” she says. 9. Take in calcium and vitamin D every day. Sunlight helps our bodies make vitamin D, but that doesn’t always happen here. “October through May, we aren’t making vitamin D in Minnesota,” Graff says. And the other six months of the year, we

try to protect our skin from the UV rays of the sun. That means we need another way to take in vitamin D. Nuts, egg yolks and supplements are sources of vitamin D, which is important in helping our bodies use the calcium we take in. Calcium helps prevent porous bones and osteoporosis. It’s more effective with exercise and vitamin D.

7. Limit your sodium intake. Sodium, of course, is salt. The recommended daily allowance for salt is one teaspoon each day. Most Americans eat four to five times that much salt every day. “People tell me they never use the salt shaker at the table,” Graff says, “but that doesn’t mean they aren’t eating too much salt.” An average of 70 percent of the salt we eat each day comes from processed foods. As a preservative and a flavor enhancer, salt is a common ingredient in many prepared foods. Again, reading ingredient lists is a good indicator of what foods contain the most salt. “Many cereals have more salt per serving
than a serving of potato chips,” Graff says.

relying on what the packaging says. “The ingredients don’t lie. The first word in the ingredient list should be the word ‘whole,’ and that should be followed by the name of a grain, such as wheat.”

Health Care at Home
Good Samaritan Society is using technology to allow more seniors to stay at home, and to stay safe. By Sara Gilbert Frederick
M
egan Lensing remembers one Good Samaritan client who wasn’t interested in the “video game” they were suggesting for him. Others have considered it too space-agey or worried that it’s a little bit Big-Brotherish. But when they find out what the WellAWARE system is really about—and what it can do for them—they usually aren’t concerned anymore.
HOME MAGAZINE I May 7 - 13, 2013
“Once they see the benefits of the system, that usually outweighs the concerns,” Lensing says.
WellAWARE is a wireless data and communication system that uses a series of sensors in a person’s house to track and monitor their well-being. The various sensors—which look a little like a smoke alarm or carbon monoxide detector—measure motion, impact, heat or humidity; each one feeds information to a centralized date manager, which in turns sends it to authorized caregivers through a private, secure server. The information collected from those sensors—from the number of times the bathroom door was opened overnight to
the temperature level near the oven in the kitchen—is reviewed daily by caregivers and helps informs the level of care provided to each particular client. Even as she describes it though, Lensing, the director of marketing for Good Samaritan Society in St. Peter, knows that it sounds a little bit like something out of Star Wars. And in fact, she believes that WellAWARE is indeed the future of health care. But she also sees it helping older adults stay in their own homes, and stay well, right now.

“It’s there to enhance, not take away from, their quality of life,” Lensing explains. “It’s all designed with a reason, and it’s all individualized based on each person’s home and health needs.” WellAWARE is part of the suite of home-health care products and services that Good Samaritan makes available to clients. In the last five years, home care has become a bigger and more innovative part of the services offered by the organization, which has been providing long-term car fore more than 90 years. Although the business was built on the foundation of providing faith-based care in nursing home settings, it has since grown to offer a continuum of care options that also includes assisted living facilities and home care. “The cost of nursing home care is outrageous,” Lensing says. “Individuals can’t continue to support it, and neither can the government. So our various services and product lines are designed to be solutions to that.”
A Suite of Solutions Home care services are available within a 60-mile radius of Good Samaritan’s home health office in downtown St. Peter. Services range from skilled in-home care by registered nurses to TeleHealth, Personal Emergency Response Sytems (PERS) and WellAWARE. The goal of each, Lensing explains, is to help seniors safely stay in their own homes as long as possible. Skilled care service is designed for patients who are recovering from an injury or an operation and who would otherwise need to move into a long-term care facility. Under a doctor’s orders, nurses come to the home to provide wound care, administer meds and maintain IVs. It can also include visit by physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists. “We will do whatever we can to help you rehab in your own home,” Lensing says. “It’s especially convenient when you live outside of town, and it’s January, and there’s no one who can bring you in for appointments.”
For patients who choose to take part in what Good Samaritan calls its “Living Well @ Home” program, a TeleHealth device is a free service that monitors vital signs on a daily basis. It includes an oximeter to measure oxygen levels, a blood pressure cuff and a scale; it can also measure blood sugar levels and heart rate. Nurses train each patient how to use the equipment. “It’s extremely easy to use,” Lensing says. “You put your arm in the cuff and press start. It’s easier than brushing your teeth.” Clients can also elect to utilize a PERS system, which provides a lifeline or auto alert to caregivers in the event of a fall or other emergency. “It’s designed to help you stay at home longer,” Lensing says. WellAWARE, meanwhile, is “the most special thing we have going on,” Lensing says. In the short time its been available through Good Samaritan, they’ve already heard stories that prove how effective it can be at detecting potential problems and reducing
overall health-care costs.
“This is the future of health care,” Lensing adds. “This will prevent the state and the country from going bankrupt.”

Proving its Worth Such anecdotal evidence is enough to convince Good Samaritan that WellAWARE is worth the financial investment they’ve made in the technology. Medicare, however, needs to see more data before it begins paying for the service. That’s why Good Samaritan began a research project in the summer of 2010, funded by an $8 million dollar grant, to show that the WellAWARE technology is effectively helping people stay at home longer, keeping people safer and reducing the cost of health care. “We need research projects like this so that insurance companies and Mediare will see the data and pick it up,” Lensing explains.
They also see it as a bridge to the care they’ll be providing in the future as well. Ehealth is coming, Lensing says, and it will eventually be the most cost effective way to take care of the aging population. That’s why Good Samaritan has invested so much of its own resources into developing and testing the technology.

“Alzheimer’s is a terrible disease, but it mustn’t claim two victims,” say the authors. Ignoring that fact may lead to Caregiver Burn-Out. Recognize that your feelings are probably going haywire. You may have crushing guilt, anger, or sadness. You might feel lonely, shameful, or de-

our mother scared the daylights out of you last week. She said she was going for a quick walk but when she didn’t return three hours later, you went looking for her. You were frantic, she was confused, you were embarrassed. She has early-stage Alzheimer’s and you’re trying to cope but things are getting worse for her. Things are getting worse for you. You never thought you’d have to be a parent to your parent, but here you are. And in the new book “Dr. Ruth’s Guide for the Alzheimer’s Caregiver” by Dr. Ruth K. Westheimer with Pierre A. Lehu, here’s some help. It’s not the job you grew up wanting but you’ve taken the responsibility anyhow. Being a caregiver for someone with Alzheimer’s may be a burden and there may be joy in it – but however you see it, you’re not alone. Dr. Ruth says there are some fifteen million
people just like you, caring for a parent, partner, spouse, or relative. That amounts to over $183 billion of unpaid care each year. And that can be overwhelming. For starters, the authors say, don’t “draw lines in the sand.” Remain flexible, figure out other ways to do what needs doing, and never turn down offers of help; even delegating the tiniest chores will feel like a relief. And don’t even think about doing housework when you’ve got some precious time to yourself.
pressed. Maybe you’re filed with grief. Don’t repress those feelings; instead, manage them by preparing for or deflecting them. Preparing early for other inevitabilities will help, too. Learn to understand Alzheimer’s and its stages, as well as possible treatments.
Teach children and grandchildren to adapt, and learn how to get siblings to pitch in. Find a good lawyer. Know how to deal with combativeness, frustration, and when it’s time to seek new accommodations. Let’s lay this on the table: “Dr. Ruth’s Guide for the Alzheimer’s Caregiver” includes information on sex. You’d be disappointed if it didn’t, wouldn’t you? The thing is, that’s not the focus in this fine book. With extreme sensitivity, authors Dr. Ruth Westheimer and Pierre Lehu offer comfort and direction for caregivers who want to avoid being overwhelmed by their situations. This book touches on a lot of aspects on both sides: there’s personal and practical info for caregivers, as well as insight on how the patient might be feeling. I liked the individual stories included here, and the authors’ advice seems sound – even when the advice is to ask a professional. Overall, this is one of those books you hope you’ll never need, but you’ll be glad you’ve got it if you do. For Boomers, elders, and caregivers now and in the (possible) future, “Dr. Ruth’s Guide for the Alzheimer’s Caregiver” sheds a lot of light.
Are expired medications still safe?
This situation is a relatively common occurrence. Many medicine cabinets are stocked with over-thecounter drugs as well as prescription medications that may be past their
expiration dates. It is a good idea to routinely discard expired medicines, but if you happen to take a drug that has passed its expiration date, you will most likely suffer no ill effects.
Expiration dates also may be a marketing ploy. Francis Flaherty, a retired FDA pharmacist, has said drug manufacturers put expiration dates on products for marketing purposes rather than scientific reasons. It doesn’t make financial sense to a company to have products on the shelves for years. Therefore, most drug manufacturers will not do long-term testing on products to confirm if they will be effective 10 to 15 years after manufacture. The U.S. military has conducted their own studies with the help of the FDA. FDA researchers
tested more than 100 over-the-counter and prescription drugs. Around 90 percent were proven to still be effective long past the expiration date -- some for more than 10 years. Drugs that are stored in cool, dark places have a better chance of lasting because the fillers used in the product will not separate or start to break down as they might in a warm, humid environment. Storing medicines in the refrigerator can prolong their shelf life.
still want to err on the safe side, routinely clean out medications from cabinets once they expire. However,
if an expired medication is taken by mistake, there’s little need to worry about potentially adverse effects.
Although a pharmacist cannot legally advise consumers to use medication past an expiration date, most overthe-counter pain relievers and drugs in pill form should still be fine. Certain liquid antibiotics and drugs made up of organic materials can expire faster than others. For those who

According to the Harvard Medical School Family Health Guide, the expiration date on a medicine is not the dates when a drug becomes hazardous. Rather, it marks the period of time after which a drug company can no longer guarantee the efficacy of the medication. Since 1979, drug manufacturers selling medications in the United States have been required by the Food and Drug
Administration to stamp an expiration date on their products. This is the date until which the manufacturer can still guarantee full potency of the drug.

Shedding pounds after 50
L
osing some weight is a goal for many people regardless of age. While youngsters and young adults might be able to get away with a few extra pounds without suffering any significant consequences, older adults carrying some extra weight might be putting their overall health at considerable risk.
Shedding weight after the age of 50 is not always easy. As a person ages, muscle mass tends to dwindle while body fat has a tendency to increase. Since fat burns fewer calories than muscle, weight gain as a person ages is bound to happen. But that doesn’t mean such weight gain is inevitable. In fact, men and women willing to make certain changes
with regard to diet and exercise can shed pounds after 50 while preventing future weight gain. Diet Men and women need fewer calories as they age. For example, men and women in their 40s may need as many as 200 calories more per day than they will when they
Muscle-strengthening activities, including yoga, can help men and women over 50 lose weight and keep the weight off. reach their 50s. Counting calories might seem difficult, so men and women
in their 50s and older who don’t think they can count calories can try to eat more low-calorie foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Consuming fewer calories often requires changing dietary habits, not only with regard to what you’re eating but also how you’re eating and even how you shop for food. Men and women used to dining out for lunch every day can start bringing their own lunches so they can gain greater control of their daily caloric intake. For those who find they’re frequently too exhausted to cook each night, they can prepare meals in advance to have healthy, homemade meals waiting instead of always ordering takeout or delivery. When shopping for food, people should avoid doing so on an empty stomach so they’re less inclined to buy unhealthy snacks.
www.homemagonline.com
Exercise Exercise is another essential component to shedding pounds after 50, though men and women over 50 should always consult a physician before they begin a new exercise regimen. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention points out that regular exercise can help older men and women prevent the onset of a host of ailments, including heart disease and diabetes. In addition, the CDC notes that regular physical activity as one
ages helps muscles grow stronger, which increases the chances that an individual will be able to perform necessary daily activities without the assistance of others. Maintaining that independence into older adulthood is a goal for many men and women, and it’s a goal that’s far more realistic for men and women who exercise than it is for those who don’t. When coupled with a healthy, low-calorie diet, routine exercise can help men and women over 50 shed extra weight and keep the weight off once it’s gone. According to the CDC, older adults need at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, such as brisk walking, every week and muscle-strengthening activities on 2 more days a week. These musclestrengthening activities should work all the major muscle groups, including the legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders, and arms. Muscle-strengthening activities include lifting weights, working out with resistance bands, exercise such as push-ups and sit-ups that use body weight for resistance, and yoga. Even gardening that involves digging and shoveling can be considered a muscle-strengthening activity. Weight gain is often an expected side effect of aging. But men and women don’t have to gain weight as they get older. Some simple dietary changes and a commitment to routine exercise is all it takes to shed weight after 50 and keep that weight off once it’s gone.
Reasons to include more dairy in your diet
While the benefits of including fruits and vegetables in your diet are widely known, the medical benefits of dairy are often overlooked. The following are a handful of ways that dairy products like lowfat milk, cottage cheese and yogurt can make a nutritious and beneficial addition to your diet.
• Dairy is a great source of vitamin D. In addition to providing sufficient calcium and protein, dairy also helps men, women and children boost their vitamin D. That’s especially important in the winter months when people tend to get less exposure to the sun. Exposure to the sun is a natural way to boost your vitamin D, but the shorter days and colder weather of winter can make it hard to get sufficient vitamin D during that time of year. Dairy products like low-fat milk can boost your vitamin D, which can improve your bone health and, according to recent research, might help reduce your cancer risk. • Dairy may help lower your blood pressure. Men and women with high blood pressure might benefit from
including more dairy in their diets. In a study of 5,000 adults, Spanish researchers found that those who reported consuming the most low-fat dairy products were more than 50 percent less likely to develop high blood pressure than those who consumed less low-fat dairy. Though researchers are not certain as to the reason behind low-fat dairy products’ impact on blood pressure, some theorize that their calcium and protein content are likely behind the benefit. • Dairy benefits your bones. Dairy has long been known to improve bone density. But it’s not just seniors who benefit from the bonestrengthening impact of dairy. Youngsters who consume dairy can also expect an increase in bone mass, which can make them less susceptible to injuries like broken bones. Seniors who consume dairy to improve their bone density should know that a recent
study from researchers at the Institute for Aging Research found that not all dairy products are equal when it comes to improving bone density. While milk and yogurt were linked to higher bone mineral density, dairy products like cream and ice cream contain less protein, calcium and vitamin D and more fat and sugar than yogurt and milk, and these products may actually be associated with lower bone mineral density.
HOME MAGAZINE I May 7 - 13, 2013
• Dairy packs a proteinand calcium-laden punch. One cup of nonfat yogurt can provide as much as one-third of your daily recommended calcium intake and nearly 20 percent of your daily recommended protein intake. Though dairy products like ice cream don’t pack the same nutritious punch as yogurt, healthier fare
like reduced-fat cheese and skim milk can go a long way toward meeting your daily intake of protein and calcium.
Automotive/Recreation
A healthy diet can improve quality of life and reduce a person’s risk of developing disease or other negative health conditions. For example, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can boost the immune system and promote cardiovascular health, lowering your risk of heart disease in the process.
15
Though there are many ways men and women can improve their overall health, it’s important to consider the nutritional value of dairy when making any alterations to your diet.
These foods may help prevent cancer
C
While screenings are an important part of detecting and treating cancer, those over 50 should know they can take certain measures to possibly prevent the onset of cancer. For example, including certain foods as part of a regular diet may be effective at preventing cancer. Though there’s no way to guarantee a person won’t get cancer, the following foods may help lower the risk.
• Blueberries: Blueberries may help prevent the onset of neck and mouth cancers. That’s because blueberries are rich in antioxidants, which the American Institute for Cancer Research notes can protect cells from being damaged. • Coffee: Though studies about the efficacy of coffee as a potentially preventive agent against cancer are ongoing, some studies have found that both caffeinated
and decaffeinated coffee can lower a person’s risk of developing colon, endometrial and prostate cancer. • Whole grains: Whole grains can help men and women control their weight, as they are lower in calories than more traditional options. But studies have shown that whole grains, which can be found in whole-grain and whole-wheat pastas, can also reduce your
risk of colon cancer. • Tomatoes: Tomatoes are loaded with lycopene, a carotenoid that numerous studies have indicated can reduce incidence of cancer, cardiovascular disease and macular degeneration. These studies have based their findings on tomato consumption and not on the use of lycopene supplements, which may or may not be effective at preventing
cancer. Cooked tomatoes can improve the body’s ability to absorb lycopene, further enhancing its ability to protect the body against cancer. • Fatty fish: Fatty fish, including salmon, that is full of omega-3 fatty acids has been linked to a host medical benefits, including lowering a person’s risk of cancer and heart disease.

ancer is a potentially deadly disease that does not discriminate based on a person’s age, sex, ethnicity, or social status. Though anyone can get cancer, the National Institute on Aging notes that a person’s risk of getting cancer increases with age, even if that person has no family history of cancer. That reality highlights the importance of routine cancer screenings for men and women age 50 and older.
