Spring Means Farmers Share The Roads let the vehicle pass. • Look for the operator’s hand signals and check the left side of the road for gates, driveways or other places a farm vehicle might make a left turn. • Speak with young drivers about safety, too. “Especially if they are new to the road,” Tom says. “Some drivers may not know proper procedure when approaching a farm vehicle.” Vehicle collisions most commonly occur between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. This four-hour stretch often means increased activity on the road, as many make their way home from

work, run errands, attend community activities and shuttle children home from school and extracurricular activities.

“If farmers and drivers work together and safely share the road, we can reduce accidents and ensure that everyone gets a chance to enjoy the warmer days ahead,” says Tom.

Six farm-safety tips to keep in mind this planting season “Just because it has never happened does not mean it couldn’t.”

1. Transport Safely: Be mindful as you transport equipment on public roadways. Petrea recommends providing the traveling public with many signs to warn them you’re moving

your lungs. Not keen on keeping a book? Just snap photos of the label on your phone. 3. Maintain Equipment: Keep every piece of equipment on your farm serviced. Even if you serviced a machine before putting it away last season, that does not mean it will be in perfect condition when you take it to the field this year. 4. Store Fuel Properly: Store fuel away from your machine shed. Petrea says that if any problems arise and a fire erupts, keeping your fuel tank a safe distance away from buildings will offer the best protection.

5. Stay Healthy: Spending long hours in the field does not mean you should skip meals or rest. Without an adequate amount of sleep and proper nutrition, you will be operating at a reduced level in the fields. Petrea says to follow the recommended guidelines for sleep and diet. To stay well rested, the Centers for Diease Control and Prevention suggest between seven and nine hours of sleep

per night for adults. To make sure you’re eating right, use the U.S. Department of Agriculture MyPlate guide. 6. Watch for Children: Large pieces of equipment that make a

lot of noise will attract a child’s attention. Petrea says to avoid carrying your children on your farm equipment. If that’s not possible, make sure your child is secured.

Tom Farms hopes alerting drivers of the increase in farm-vehicle traffic will reduce that number this year. Tom Farms has a few tips to keep in mind this spring, including: • Start slowly applying your brakes early. It takes only five seconds for a vehicle traveling 55 miles per hour to close a 100-yard gap with a tractor moving only 15 miles per hour. • A good rule of thumb when following farm equipment is to stay back at least 50 feet. • Don’t assume that a farm vehicle that pulls to the right side of the road will turn right or

As farmers head to the fields to plant, farm equipment becomes more active on local roads and highways. Local farmers encourage all drivers to exercise caution when approaching tractors and farm implements to ensure their safety and the safety of others. Kip Tom of Tom Farms in Leesburg, says farmers and other drivers must work together to keep rural roads safe. “Planting season is certainly a hectic time for any farmer, but our number one priority will always be safety,” he says. “When operating a farm implement on the road, we’re always extremely alert and aware

espite the ups and downs of the agriculture industry over the last few years, young Americans continue to embrace careers in farming as a way to contribute to the economy and earn an honest living. There is much to attract them: the U.S. Department of Agriculture says that this industry is the second most productive segment of the

national economy and that on average every farmer in this country feeds around 144 people. The Agricultural Council of America sponsors “Ag Day” as a showcase of what’s best about our food and fiber production industries: farm owners and workers make everyday life easier and more delicious by producing food and fibers that are

safe, affordable, and easy to access. This year’s focus on making farming an attractive career includes showing young people that the family farm is not a thing of the past. In fact, 98 percent of American farms are family owned and operated. And according to the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture, the average farmer’s age is 57, which means that a great number of generational handovers is just around the corner. Encouraging the next generation involves coaching those farmers approaching retirement age in succession planning, which allows a farm to be passed on in the family before it can get absorbed into a larger farming

corporation or fall into disuse. Another strategy is seen with the Land Link regional programs which partner retiring farmers with younger ones just getting started. This is a great way to ensure the passing on of business skills and agricultural savvy, which is just what the next generation needs.

think we are far enough into May so I can’t jinx us by saying spring is here. Wow! Didn’t that seem like a long winter? As we enter the outdoor grilling and BBQ season, I thought I would compile a “Top 10 List” of things to get done to optimize this year. Why 10? TV host David Letterman does it and he seems to do fine it, so here goes.

2. Take an objective look at your grilling equipment. Do you use a kitchen fork and a plastic Teflon spatula when you are cooking outdoors? If so, that’s simply disturbing. Commit to some quality grilling utensils made of steel. All you really need is a nice spatula and a good set of tongs.

4. Use charcoal. I know, I know. Tex (my neighbor) gets frustrated that most of my columns deal with real charcoal grilling. I

6. Cut it thick. If you are going to grill pork chops and steaks this year, make a commitment to talk to the butcher and order them properly. Don’t buy the family pack that is so thin you can almost read a newspaper through the cuts of meat. Get the steaks and chops cut to at least one inch thick, and buy them “bone in.” Too thick? Hey, you don’t have to eat the entire steak or chop. Split it with someone. This isn’t rocket science.

10. Simply put, read. Obviously you are reading this column, and by the way, thank you for that. But in addition to this piece, there are great books out there on the topics of grilling, smoking and making fantastic barbecue. It’s great reading material.

3. Commit to trying some different dishes this year. When the average person thinks of grilling, they envision hot dogs, hamburgers, steak and chicken. While those are delicious, try grilling vegetables. Or how about slow smoking a pork butt? Ever tried beer can chicken? Make 2013 your year to stretch your skills.

5. Involve family and friends in the outdoor cooking process. The social side of outdoor cooking is almost as important as the end result. I would ask that you commit to involving your kids or grandkids. Pass on the legacy and art of outdoor grilling and barbecue.
