FEATURED LISTING
HOME MAGAZINE I June 18 - 24, 2013
The very latest in interior decorating, a home and garden that are the envy of the neighborhood, a house that doesn’t show its age… Keeping up with this combination of factors could lead to a considerable increase in the value of your property. The upkeep of a home often just involves small yearly modifications and simple jobs. A neat exterior, well-pruned hedges, materials in a good state of repair, and a clear, unimpeded view of the home all add up to a well-maintained property and a proud homeowner. Where the exterior is concerned, maintaining the siding should be your priority, as this will protect your home from bad weather for years to come. The roof is the other part of your home that should never be neglected. For example, the state of the roof could deteriorate if moss is allowed to cover it. Don’t neglect the concrete surrounding an in-ground pool and always protect garden furniture from the harmful rays of the sun. Did you know that a well-planned yard can increase the value of your property? As they grow, the trees you plant will add to the worth of your home as well as adding to your comfort both outside and inside: trees block the wind in cool weather and provide shade on hot summer days. That can mean a reduction in both air-conditioning and heating costs. So give free rein to your gardening talents by planting trees, creating flower beds, and establishing hedges. Lastly, spread compost to enrich your soil for a beautiful lawn and don’t forget to weed regularly in order to enhance the appearance of your shrubs and flowers.

Summer Wedding Guide 2013

Wedding etiquette never goes out of style Weddings may have changed a great deal over the last few years, but what hasn’t changed is the way guests should behave. Here are a few tips to help you find your way through the maze of tradition, etiquette, and protocol. The first rule of decorum comes into play well before the wedding, upon receipt of the invitation. The paper, the script, and especially the location chosen will give you a good idea of how you should dress for the event. Remember that the later the hour of the ceremony, the more formal the attire usually is. Even for a black-tie and gown reception, leave your long, sequined dresses and plunging necklines at home. It would be in poor taste to upstage the bride. Similarly, women guests should never wear white at any time during the wedding day; this color is reserved for the bride. A general rule for male guests is to wear a suit and tie and avoid the color brown. If the invitation mentions that children are not invited, the wishes of the bride and groom must be respected. Only the people whose names appear on the invitation envelope are counted for the guest list. And if your partner cannot attend, you should never invite a friend to accompany you without consulting with the couple first. Finally, any selfrespecting guest brings a wedding gift. If the bride and groom have organized a wedding registry, you don’t necessarily have to comply with it. You could offer a gift of cash money or any other inspired gesture. It is fine to bring the gift to the reception, but even better is to send it to the bride and groom or to the matron of honor in advance of the wedding.
He has finally proposed? Then your top priority is to do a bit of bragging and tell everyone the good news! Once your initial excitement has calmed down a touch, though, you’ll have to take time to do some serious thinking. There are so many details to plan, a budget to draw up, and deadlines to be met: it seems so overwhelming. If you are finding it hard to get some traction and launch your wedding planning, here are ten tips to give you some direction and help you get moving.
Summer Wedding Guide 2013
The top ten wedding to-do’s
27
1. Establish your budget per guest. In fact, this is the perfect time to draw up your guest list. 2. Order your invitations, being careful to include your names, the date, time, and place of the wedding and reception, as well as the date by which you need to receive replies. Being clear about this will help you save a lot of precious time and money. Be sure to include stamped, addressed envelopes if you can. 3. The reception hall is often one of the biggest expenses, so be sure to reserve one as quickly as possible. If you want to keep

expenses down, think about holding the reception at a family home or in a garden. 4. Creating a good atmosphere is just as important as choosing a caterer, although you don’t want to skimp on food either. To cut costs, consider serving fewer courses, with a focus on excellent quality instead of quantity. 5. Make up or order wedding favors for your guests. These are put with their place setting or offered at the end of the reception. Let your imagination run wild: you could offer small homemade soaps, candles, local produce in mini format, bath pearls, or small boxes of candies. It can also be fun to have a “retro” favor, such as a pack of matches with the bride and groom’s names embossed on the matchbook cover. 6. Give yourself enough time to find a wedding gown that really suits your personality. It is also possible to rent a dress for the occasion, much as your beloved can buy or rent his tuxedo. 7. Book your hair, make-up, esthetician, and manicure appointments several weeks before the wedding. If possible, plan a test run. 8. Put all your heart into writing down the vows that you would like to make during the marriage ceremony. If you plan to make a speech at the reception, be sure to get that down in writing as well. 9. P l a n the reception down to the last detail: create the atmosphere you like with suitable music, entertainment, and a décor that matches your personality. 400 S. 3rd St. St. Peter • Call for appointment 507-931-6174 • Fax 507-931-6195 • Toll Free 888-600-8533 (Don’t forget to

Caring for a freshly sodded lawn Sod, sometimes called turf, can quickly turn a barren landscape into a rich, thick carpet of green. Homeowners hoping to revive their lawns commonly turn to sod as the quickest means to do just that. Agronomy • Energy However, once the sod has been laid down, few homeowners may know how to keep it looking its best. Feed • Grain Sod is real grass that is grown on special farms. It is generally grown locally to avoid long transport times that could dry out the product. Sod is typically sold in squares or rolls of grass that come with the roots and soil already attached. There may be some sort of thin backing material on the sod to keep the grass blades together.

Many homeowners turn to sod when growing lawn from seed becomes problematic or too time-consuming. Seeds can be blown around in the wind or be eaten by birds and other animals before they have a chance to germinate. Sodding a lawn is a major investment, costing as much as $1 per two-foot square. Depending on the size of your lawn, this can be a costly job even before adding the cost of additional supplies, such as soil, fertilizer and tilling equipment. Many homeowners who install sod want to ensure their investment lasts. Here are the main ways to care for and protect sod until it is fully established. * Once the sod has been laid down, the lawn should be thoroughly soaked with water. Most experts recommend soaking it to a depth of 6 inches.

* It is important to establish a watering schedule to keep the sod moist. Water the sod to a depth of one inch every other day for the first three weeks to enable the roots to securely establish themselves in the soil. Farm News/Auctions
* Water the sod every other day unless the weather has been very warm. After four weeks you can generally go up to five days without watering as long as you transition slowly. The sod will change colors if it is not getting enough water. Never let the lawn turn yellow, otherwise you may have to cut out dead spots and re-sod. * Wait two to four weeks before mowing the sod. Keep the lawn height to around two inches to ensure that it won’t scald in the sun. * After two months of established sod growth, aerate the sod to keep the soil from being too compact and to enable oxygen and nutrients to get into the soil. * Keep children and pets off of the sod while it is establishing itself.
