Like it or not, the adoption of biotechnology in agriculture is standard practice these days. The cultivation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) now extends to over 432 million acres worldwide. In 2013, 27 countries grew GM crops; that is equal to about 18 million farmers. Topping the list, the United States has 173 million acres of GM crops, followed by Brazil (99 million acres), Argentina (59 million acres), India (27 million acres), and Canada (47 million acres). In Europe, only five countries allow GM crops, including Spain.

Brazil, a golden rice in the Philippines, and a corn in China. With the expansion of GM crops, the opponents of biotechnology are also increasing in number. More and more petitions are being circulated by the general public demanding that big supermarket chains stop selling genetically modified sweet corn—of all the GMOs, corn is the main food to be grown for human consumption.

Extensive public awareness campaigns are also demanding the reporting of genetically modified ingredients. Polls show that nearly 93 percent of Americans would support GMO labeling. Here in the United States, where almost all cotton, soybeans, canola, corn, and beet harvests are genetically modified, 26 states have already proposed legislation to draw this fact to the attention of consumers.

Sweet Relief The bolstering of the 2014 Farm Bill brought a sigh of sweet relief to many farmers this past winter. The U.S. Depart ment of Agriculture announced in April that eligible farmers and ranchers needing disaster assistance could get help for certain types of damage to livestock, fruit trees, and bee farms. Enrolment in disaster assistance programs will enable

these agricultural industries to recover losses that occurred while the Farm Bill was languishing before Congress.

Americans might recall that extreme weather events in 2012 were especially hard on the agricultural industry. The National Climatic Data Center documented 11 climate and weather disaster events in that year, including seven tornado and severe weather occurrences, two tropical cyclone storms, a prolonged drought, and wildfires related to the abnormally dry conditions.

The Livestock Indemnity Program and the Livestock Forage Disaster Program cover eligible ranchers and farmers for weather-related or diseased livestock losses and grazing losses that occurred since 2011. Producers covered by the Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honey-bees, and FarmUSDA Drought Disaster Declarations saw reports from raised Fish Program and the Tree Assistance Program are over 80 percent of the country’s 3,143 counties. Last year, also relieved to see the Farm Bill reinvigorated. American farms saw their way through no fewer than seven

It’s not often thought of as a major player in agriculture, but the honey bee is more than just the purveyor of a delicious slice of toast in the morning. Honey bees play an increasingly important role as the main pollinators of up to one-third of the produce we eat. That includes almonds, apples, avocados, cucumbers, blueberries, certain melons, sunflowers, and more. That is why honey-bee health is becoming a hot topic in agriculture. Today’s large-scale beekeepers manage some 2.4 million colonies across the country. Many of them travel or “migrate” with their hives in order to pollinate commercial fruit trees, a job that native species alone cannot manage. The American Beekeeping Federation reports that California requires one billion bee colonies just for its almond crops.
