FREE EVENT!

Sunday, October 15

Autumn arrives with cool breezes, awe-inspiring foliage and the hint of holidays on the horizon. Fall is a favorite time of year for many people because the crisp weather motivates people of all ages to enjoy the great outdoors.

Great ways to enjoy autumn

7

Individuals conscious of their carbon footprints can use fall as a time to take inventory of their behaviors and make changes where necessary. The following are some steps to take right now that fit perfectly with the harvest season.

· Bake your own pie.

Take advantage of the many roadside stands that crop up this time of year where you can find bushels of apples, pumpkins, gourds, and late-summer vegetables. After a day of sightseeing, visit a farm stand for warm cider and freshly baked doughnuts. Buying local produce reduces reliance on foreign-shipped foods and other products, while also cutting back on the fuel consumed to get foods from the farm to the table.

After a fun-filled day picking apples at a nearby orchard, head home and use those locally sourced apples to whip up a delicious pie.

· Use nature to decorate. Skip plastic, mass-produced decorations and rely on nature to dress up your home. Fill vases with leaves and berries. Place small pumpkins on mantles, and enrich the landscape of your home with vibrantly hued mums and other cool-weather plants. Corn husks and stalks can add harvest flair to front porches. Twigs nestled and tied together can make interesting table centerpieces.

· Visit a corn maze.

Clothing that is not worthy of donation can be transformed into a festive scarecrow just in time for Halloween hijinks. Fill out the body of the scarecrow with newspaper and then add some pieces of straw around the neck, hands and feet.

· Create a composting pile. Outdoor chores are easier in cool weather than they are when the mercury rises. Set aside a place in the yard for composting. A healthy compost pile should have roughly twothirds carbon (brown) materials and one-third nitrogen (green) materials, says EarthEasy. com. Use those lawn clippings and raked leaves to make compost for spring plantings.

· Host a football party. Watch the game on television or have a pickup game in the yard. Serve finger foods to cut down on the need for plastic or paper plates and flatware. Purchase a keg of beer from a local brewery to eliminate individual beer cans and bottles. Set out a nonalcoholic punch bowl so the kids can enjoy refreshments, too.

www.homemagonline.com

After corn has been harvested, farm owners often use their land for supplemental income. Corn mazes can be simple or complex depending on visitors’ ages. Engage in family bonding outside and turn off electronics in the process.

· Recycle old clothes to dress your scarecrow.

Plan your fall foliage excursion · Get off the highway. To see great fall vistas, take a detour from major thoroughfares and visit small towns and mountain passes. Invest in some maps, as cellular networks may be inaccessible in remote locales.

Autumn means different things to many people. Students may embrace the dawn of a new school year, while others might embrace the crisp weather after a season of heat. One of the more widely enjoyed aspects of autumn is the chance to take in the brilliant foliage.

HOME MAGAZINE I September 26 - October 2 , 2017

· Don’t overlook overcast days. Traveling in the rain may not be fun, but overcast days might be ideal. On such days, the sun won’t be too warm and drown out the colors.

· Avoid tourist-heavy areas. Drivers may prefer less crowded roadways to accompany the great scenery. Such drivers should visit areas that are not tourist meccas. Any area that plays home · Bring along binoculars. Wildlife is often mobile and abundant in the fall, as animals to forests and sprawling landscapes will do. scurry to feed and gather supplies before the winter. As a result, autumn is a great time to spot · Go on foot. To get the best photos, head out at sunrise or sunset. Soft, golden light dappled by wildlife that’s normally hiding in thickets and woodland areas.

The north shore is renowned for its bright, orange, red and yellow panoramas and dazzling displays of foliage as temperatures descend and deciduous trees begin to shed their leaves. To make the most of fall foliage road trips, drivers can keep the following suggestions in mind.

· Plan for stops along the way. Don’t forget to bring some spending money so that you can enjoy the small farm stands and shops that often dot rural landscapes. Pick up farm-fresh produce or choose a plump pumpkin. Yard sales also are abundant this time of year. Small shops may not take credit cards, so if you plan to buy, cash is king. Trees begin shedding their leaves as early as the beginning of September up north. As the days press on, the fall finery will gradually shift southward. For those who can afford to take a weekday off, do so, as weekends might be overcome with fellow nature enthusiasts.

A Guide to Open House Etiquette Fall is starting to be upon us…kids are in school, and it’s time to get the last minute repairs done on the house or maybe it’s just time to look for a new one? Welcome to the “Fall Showcase of Homes” edition of Home Magazine, where you can browse through homes in the Mankato area. If you don’t already have an agent, open houses are easy way to begin a relationship with one. You’ll see how he or she markets the home, and you can ask questions.

HOME MAGAZINE I SEPTEMBER 26 - OCTOBER 2 , 2017

Open houses are your chance to get to know a for-sale home up close and personal, to see the reality behind listing language like “gourmet kitchen” and “giant closet” and let you gauge the market in your area. During most open houses, you’ll be asked to sign in and provide an address and telephone number. This helps the seller’s agent to follow up with you; if you didn’t like the house, the agent may have another listing that fits you better. You don’t have to sign in but it’s polite to at least introduce yourself to the agent so he or she can keep track of who’s walking through the home. Here are some do’s and don’t that will help you make the most of open house visits: Do show up at the house as early as possible, before the crowd. That way, an agent will have time to give you personal attention and answer questions. Don’t wait until the last minute to arrive, when an agent most likely is turning off lights and packing up brochures. If you can’t make the open house with plenty of time to look around, call the agent and arrange a personal showing.

Do ask questions about the home. Have any offers been made? Is the seller motivated? If the price has dropped, why? How long as the property been on the market? How much are utilities? Are there any water problems? Any assessments or extra fees? Don’t monopolize an agent with endless questions during a busy open house. You can always follow up later. And don’t be contentious or challenging; that will only shut doors of communication and make the agent less willing to share information. Do answer questions about what home features you want, price range, number of people who will live in the home, and whether you already own a home already.

Do take a listing sheet. Those handy-dandy sheets containing photos of the house, specs, and the asking price are there for your perusal and enjoyment! Take one and read through it. Ask the listing agent any clarifying questions you have and feel free to take notes. Do dress appropriately in clean, casual wear. No one will throw you out of an open house if you arrive wearing Daisy Dukes and a flip flops but if you don’t look like a responsible buyer, agents are less likely to take you seriously. Bring or wear socks, most Open Houses require you to remove your shoes. Also feel free to photos so you can remember details, (ask permission first) and take measurements to make sure your furniture will fit. Don’t open closed doors without asking the agent first, or open drawers or medicine cabinets. Also, don’t criticize the house in front of the agent; wait until you leave to talk smack about the property. And don’t make use of the bathrooms. Do check for basement dampness, foundation cracks or outdated plumbing and wiring. Walk around the property to see if water pools in any section, which could point to grading problems. Drive around the area to get a feel for the neighborhood. If you have kids, look for other youngsters they might play with. If you are empty nesters who want peace and quiet, keep an eye out for older residents. Don’t buy a house that you think has water problems, which are hard and expensive to cure. And don’t overlook landscaping, which could include old, dead trees that may have to be taken down, which is a costly job. Do discuss the house later that day. If you’re buying a house with someone else, sit down together and have a frank conversation about the houses you visited. Discuss likes, dislikes, prices, neighborhood preferences, and everything else you consider important in your future home. Treating each open house like a case study will build your house buying muscles and transform you into a house buying hulk. There’s no such thing as learning too much! Do have fun! I cannot stress this enough. Researching houses and real estate doesn’t have to be an arduous, painful process. Enjoy waltzing around other people’s homes and relish all the knowledge you’re gaining. Nothing will prepare you to buy your own place like visiting a ton of available homes.

without a home theatre?

Going to the movies can have its fair share of annoyances; exorbitant ticket and snack prices, overly air-conditioned rooms, annoying neighbours and uncomfortable seats are just a few. For genuine movie buffs, the entire experience can rapidly go downhill. The solution? A home theatre. Home theatres are usually set up in the basement of a home. That’s because this area of the house has certain advantages: • The ceilings are low and therefore easier to soundproof. • Low natural light helps recreate the atmosphere of a real movie theatre. • A basement can be decorated with a theme that’s different from the rest of the home. Many movie fans prefer individual seats similar to those found in theaters. Other lovers of the seventh art are fond of modular sofas because of their versatility. For a home theatre with a timeless style, avoid decorations associated with a specific era. Don’t choose boring colours, but don’t go overboard with accessories either. BASIC RULES For viewing that is both optimal and safe, experts recommend that spectators sit at a distance equal to double the diagonal measurement of the screen. In addition, the front speakers should be located at the height of the viewer’s ear when sitting. The screen should be at least 60 cm off the floor, and the subwoofer should be positioned under the screen. There; you’re all set. Enjoy the movie!

A home theatre allows you to avoid the downsides of going out to the movies.

An electric fireplace for a cozy atmosphere Watching the dancing flames while sipping your favourite drink is a great way to relieve your stress after yet another hectic day. Of course, no electrical appliance can truly replace the smell, movement and sound of a natural wood fire. However, an electric fireplace is an economical option that works wonders. Here are its four major advantages. 1) Unlike other types of fireplaces, it’s suitable for all kinds of homes. There’s no need for a chimney or vent with an electric fireplace; that is why it’s the perfect choice for small apartments and condos. 2) There’s no need to call on the services of a professional to have it installed. Just like a heater, an electric fireplace operates from a wall socket. The process is simple: buy it, unpack it, plug it in and enjoy your new purchase without missing a beat.

An alarm system keeps trouble away Anyone who has been the victim of a home robbery knows how unpleasant it is to imagine strangers rummaging through their belongings. Fortunately, there is an effective way to discourage thieves from breaking into your home: install an alarm system. CHOOSE YOUR SYSTEM There’s a lot of choice when it comes time to install an alarm system. In fact, dozens of companies want to protect your home from theft and home invasions. Beware of sellers who put a lot of pressure on you to close a sale quickly. Before making a decision, it’s always best to compare estimates from three different companies.

This DeMars Construction built in 3700 SF home was designed specifically for this unique .61 acre lot. Nestled into the hillside, it has great views of wildlife activity around one of the only Limestone Basket retaining walls in the Mankato area. Located on a 6 lot cul de sac in the Mankato West School district, this property gives you a balance of privacy and city living. Interior features include Black Walnut hardwood floors, whole house audio, granite counter tops, Master Bath in floor heat, two fireplaces and heated garage. Owner is Agent/Broker WWW.HOMEMAGONLINE.COM

OPEN HOUSE SUNDAY Oct. 1, NOON - 1:30 pm

Shawna Wolfe 507-420-1877

Leann Valentine 507-304-2570

THE ADVANTAGES An alarm system connected to a call center allows you to get help quickly in case of difficulty. In addition to giving you peace of mind and being easy to use, it can also substantially reduce the cost of your home insurance. Some companies also offer to connect your alarm system to your smartphone. That way, you’ll know the state of your system and all the comings and goings in your home in real time.

Installing an alarm system is a great way to protect your home.

FALSE ALARMS Make sure that everyone who has access to your property understands how the alarm system operates. False alarms are very common and disruptive to call centers, but with a thorough understanding of the system they can easily be avoided.

Houses built over 100 years ago hold an irresistible attraction for many people. Their structure has stood the test of time and decorative elements from another era give them an aura of mystery. When you visit a century home, do you love imagining the generations of people who lived there with all their joys and sorrows?

The challenges Choosing to buy a century home typically means being confronted with some renovating challenges. Current stan dards for insulation, electricity, plumbing and ventilation are sometimes difficult to implement. Bef ore making any changes to an old house, find out about the different options available and talk to several contractors.

Beautiful and mysterious ancestral homes allow us to travel back in time.

If you’d love to buy an ancestral home, keep in mind that it’ll have its share of challenges and surprises. On the other hand, you’re sure to feel a great deal of pride in your new home.

HOME MAGAZINE I SEPTEMBER 26 - OCTOBER 2 , 2017

The charms Century, old or ancestral; whatever name you give them, old homes are material witnesses to the history of a town. Sought after by history lovers, connoisseurs, collectors and restorers, these houses preserve the heritage of a region and allow us to travel back through time. If carefully maintained, centuryold houses gain in beauty and value. Some buyers turn them into museums or bed-and-breakfast inns; others transform them into beautiful private homes.

BRICK BELONGS INSIDE AS WELL

HOME MAGAZINE I SEPTEMBER 26 - OCTOBER 2 , 2017

In the story of the three little pigs, the most cunning of the brothers built his house out of bricks. That wise decision saved his life. Indeed, brick is very resistant, which makes it a material of choice for the exterior walls of homes. But did you know it also integrates perfectly into your interior decor? THE ADVANTAGES OF BRICK Brick differs from other materials because of its esthetic properties, superior durability, impact resistance and its thermal and acoustic insulation qualities. Another major advantage of brick is undoubtedly the fact that it seldom requires maintenance. CLASSIC BRICK Laid by a masonry professional, classic brick is timeless and gives a distinctive look to any room. It can be quite costly, but you’re not likely to regret such an investment. Indeed, decorators consider it to be a safe bet. DECORATIVE BRICK The craze for decorative brick is undeniable. In response to consumer demand, stores offer an impressive selection of synthetic bricks in a wide range of textures and colours. Lighter and easier to install than conventional brick, they’re a viable option for creating a modern style with little effort. EVERYWHERE IN THE HOUSE You can use bricks to build a fireplace surround or a wine cellar, to enhance a traditional kitchen, to add an urban touch to a bedroom or give a cozy look to a living room. It won’t take long for you to be inspired by the many faces of brick. Elegant and versatile brick is a safe bet for any room in your house.

Software that lets you become your own interior decorator

Interior design and decorating software allows you to visualize all the possibilities and all the different stages of your next project. These professional tools are available on the market at affordable prices. Sometimes you can even download them for free. User-friendly tools You don’t need to be a professional decorator to use this type of software. Some of them are designed for the general public and are fairly simple to use. When you become familiar with how they work, you can spend hours looking at the many design options. You’d like to see the effect a massive chandelier would have in your living room? You’re curious to know if bright red kitchen cabinets will overwhelm the room? With interior decorating software, you can try classical concepts or completely outrageous styles before you invest in any materials. Virtual libraries With the virtual libraries included in interior design and decorating software, you can select and position furniture, appliances and fixtures. Most software allows you to simply click and drag objects onto the floor plan so you can see the results instantaneously. In addition, you can select textures, colours, furnishings and floor coverings at will. Some plans are two dimensional, while others are three dimensional. The latter is the most realistic way of imagining your self in your newly decorated room.

Planning your new decor with the help of user-friendly software is a breeze.

Mankato www.weichert.com 59223 N. Victory Drive, Mankato Located just outside Mankato City limits on the east side of town, you will find this charming cabin style house sitting on a 2.5 acre lot, just imagine another garage or pole shed with all this land to build on. 1) DECOR Interior decorators are unanimous; it’s in the smaller rooms of your home that you can allow yourself to go crazy. Go ahead and choose a theme for your laundry room that inspires you: retro, exotic, antique or romantic. Then go wild with wallpaper murals, vibrant colours and unusual accessories.

2) WASHING A deep sink and an efficient washing machine are essential in a functional laundry room. The perfect sink comes equipped with a long-neck faucet that lets you be able to fill up a bucket. To prevent possible water damage, call in a professional to make sure all water inlets are watertight and that the main drain isn’t clogged. 3) DRYING Set up a removable rod or, if there’s not enough space, a retractable clothesline for drying delicate items. You could also install a fixed rod for hanging up your clothes to dry on hangers.

An attractive laundry room makes doing laundry easy and pleasant.

4) FOLDING A flat, unobstructed surface is essential for folding bedding and clothing. A practical solution is to use the tops of a front load washer and dryer. You could also recycle a kitchen counter or island worktop and install it just above your appliances to keep odd socks from falling into the space between your machines. 5) STORAGE Suspended or full-sized cabinets are great for keeping cleaning products and accessories out of sight. Installing shelves above the doors is another clever way to save space.
