Advertising Now is not the time to become complacent especially concerning growing your market share. For many, the first reaction is to cut, cut, cut and advertising is one of the first things to go. However, experts caution that companies who slash advertising during a downturn, leave empty space in consumers’ minds for aggressive marketers to make strong inroads and gain market share. Today’s economy provides an unusual opportunity to differentiate your business and stand out from the crowd.

The developmental stages of breast cancer

Together We Stand Up To Breast Cancer!
Once a breast cancer diagnosis has been confirmed, the next step is to determine the stage and grade of the disease. The TNM (tumor, nodes, and metastases) classification system is the most commonly used for breast cancer. The TNM system determines the size of the tumor and if the cancer has spread, or metastasized, to other parts of the body. Generally speaking, there are five recognized stages:
HOME MAGAZINE I OCTOBER 8 - 14, 2013 WWW.HOMEMAGONLINE.COM
She’s been through breast cancer—including a double mastectomy and reconstruction, chemotherapy and radiation. She’s had both hips and one knee replaced. And she’s lost her 56-year-old husband, Doug, to a heart attack. But if you sit across from her at her desk at Adams Auto Sales in Mankato, you won’t hear a woe-is-me story. You won’t see her break down or fight back tears. In fact, even as she was preparing to return to surgery in less than 24 hours—this time to replace one of her new hips, which was recalled by the manufacturer—you won’t catch her feeling even the slightest bit sorry for herself. “What choice do you have?” Adams says.
“I knew right from the start that I’d kick it,” she says. “There was no choice for me. I knew what I had to do, and that was to be strong and survive. Feeling sorry for yourself does nothing.”

COME AND SEE WHAT IS NEW AT DEGROODS!
Adams made her choice on February 1, 2010. She had gone to see her doctor for what she thought was an infection—her breast was red and hot to the touch, which had happened a year earlier and been successfully treated with antibiotics. When she returned to the clinic to get her test results, they didn’t give her a prescription. Instead, her doctor told her the diagnosis and handed her a book: The Guide to Breast Cancer. But even as she walked back to the waiting room, she had already decided that she would survive.
Adams’s sister Shelly had come to the clinic to wait for her. “She just had a feeling,” Adams says. “She just thought she should be there for me.” Shelly called Doug, who was in Texas at the time, while Adams drove home to tell her two daughters, who were in high school. “When I told them, they said they knew when they heard the garage door go up,” Adams says. “They didn’t know why, but they just knew.” The girls—Clancy and Quinn—were the reason that Adams resolved to stay strong. Doug “freaked out,” she says, so she knew that she couldn’t. “They look to you, to see how you respond,” she says. “So you have to respond with strength. As a mom, it’s just what you do. You protect them, no matter what.” Not that Adams didn’t complain a little bit. She wasn’t at all happy that her family’s trip to Jamaica, planned for a week after her diagnosis, had to be cancelled. Her unhappiness over her doctor’s mandate to skip the trip was so apparent that he called her the night before surgery to make sure that she hadn’t gone on vacation anyway. “He had even written a letter to the airlines, so that we could get our money back,” she says. That trip would prove difficult to reschedule. Adams had surgery to remove her left breast and 17 lymph nodes on February 10; chemotherapy started as soon as she had healed, and then radiation. When she finished radiation in September, she scheduled the surgery to remove her other breast and reconstruct both. “I told them that I was never going to go through that again,” Adams says. “So I has the second surgery, with the reconstruction right after.” She doesn’t pretend that all of that was easy. Chemo and radiation were particularly tough, she says. Her hair fell out. Her skin started to peel. And the shots they gave her after chemotherapy made her miserable. But as she lay in bed with body aches and fatigue, she and her girls watched movies together.

Story
Once the developmental stage has been established, the healthcare team then determines the grade, or the rapidity of growth and aggressiveness of the cancer, with a microscopic examination of the biopsy tissues.
Knowing the stage and grade of breast cancer is an important step in the fight against this disease; it is what allows the woman and her healthcare team to choose the most appropriate treatment.

Adams wasn’t laughing when she made an appointment to have the pain in her hips checked out early in 2011. She was told that the chemotherapy had affected her joints and that she would need both hips and one of her knees replaced. As she finished the final stages of the reconstruction process throughout 2011 and 2012, she also dealt with three separate surgeries to replace her weakened joints. By then, both Clancy and Quinn had started college—Clancy at Minnesota State University, Mankato, and Quinn in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Doug and Shawn were staying busy at Adams Auto Sales, the business they had started together on December 15, 1995. The two had met at a dealership in Texas, where Shawn was the assistant new car manager and Doug the used car manager. When they moved to Mankato and started the business together, Doug handled the day-to-day operations while Shawn did the title work so that she could be close to home with the girls. By then, Shawn was also clear of cancer and through the worst of the recovery for her hips and knees. For the first time in two years, things were looking like they might be settling down for the Adams family. “We were ready for the next phase in our lives,” she says.
THE BEST FOODS IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER
“It was just really unfair,” Adams says of Doug’s sudden death that day. “We were empty nesters, I finally had the okay about moving on past the cancer, we had a lot to look forward to. And then you don’t.”
Did you know that some foods are considered to be anti-carcinogenic? According to several researchers, a balanced diet rich in these so called super foods can help to prevent certain cancers.
Doug’s heart attack was much harder on Shawn than her breast cancer had been. But again, she knew that she had to be strong for the sake of her girls. “It was the same thing again—but harder,” she says. “I’m their only parent now, so I had to be strong. If I had fallen apart then the whole deck of cards would have fallen apart.”
Fruits and vegetables
Grief affected each of them differently, Adams says. Clancy was stoic, determined to be strong for her mom. Quinn, however, was more distraught and grieved openly. Shawn did her crying when she was alone in the car. But she also found comfort in talking to others who were also grieving. “Some people have it worse than me,” she says. “I have to quit complaining.”
Numerous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of fruits and vegetables in the fight against cancer. Not only are fruits and vegetables a source of vitamins and minerals but they are also overflowing with phytochemicals and antioxidants, elements that prevent cancer. Cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower), berries (blueberries, strawberries, cranberries), tomatoes, and citrus fruits should all be eaten on a regular basis.
Soy
In the form of fresh or roasted beans, drinks, tofu, or even chips, soy plays a key role in the prevention of several types of cancer, particularly breast cancer.
Garlic
The anti-carcinogenic properties of garlic are such that some researchers say it is the most effective food in preventing this disease. Consuming one clove of garlic—flattened, crushed, or chopped— every day will help to slow down the development of many illnesses. According to studies, drinking three cups of green tea a day inhibits the development of cancerous cells in organs such as the breast, skin, and lungs. Other cancer-fighting foods include olive oil, turmeric, and flax seeds. In addition, specialists commonly agree that it is preferable to limit consumption of red meats and alcohol and, you’ve probably guessed it already, exercise on a daily basis!
Who will do the shopping and the housework? Who will come with me to my treatments? How can I find the time to rest? Many women have difficulty asking for help. Shyness, pride, or the fear of disturbing others prevails. And yet, being given a helping hand can facilitate adaptation to the changes caused by the cancer. When a woman accepts help from others, she is giving herself extra resources in order to fight this disease. These other people will include members of the family, of course, but also friends, coworkers, volunteers, neighbors, or someone who has lived through a similar experience. As well as providing support for the woman living with cancer, this network can give valuable help to her partner and children. Even under the best of circumstances, cancer can put a great deal of stress on family life. Everyone’s roles and responsibilities can change, and children and spouse alike are exposed to feelings of insecurity. On those more difficult days, it is reassuring to be able to count on someone, even if it’s only to walk the dog, prepare a hot meal, or take the children to the movies. A woman living with breast cancer also needs someone to talk to. She needs to be able to talk when she feels the need, or to be quiet without being questioned. Supporters and friends can be a big help with this as well.
Friends and Family
Doug’s death left an empty desk at Adam Auto Sales, which meant that Shawn needed to step back in. That turned out to be a good thing. Not only does the business give her focus and occupy up to 60 hours of her time each week, but it also allows her to spend her days with a staff that is like family to her. “We’ve got a good team here,” she says. “I could have fallen on my but when I came back, but I didn’t. And that’s because of them.” The team includes her brother, Rhett Bradley, who has been with the business since it opened. The other employees— including Denny Touhey and Joe Tachney—have been with the company for years. They’re friends (Touhey brought a lasagna to share while Shawn was going through chemotherapy) and family. “They have been incredible,” Shawn says. “This is an excellent staff.”
When a woman accepts help from others, she is giving herself extra resources for her fight against this disease.
Under her leadership, Adams Auto Sales has continued to do quite well. Sales this year are expected to top the record they set last year. “I’m thankful that even though Doug died, we’re still thriving at Adams,” she says. “I have a purpose here. I have to earn a living, and everyone who works here is on payroll, so I’m responsible for them, too. I don’t have time to feel sorry for myself.” She does, however, have to take the time to recover from her fourth hip replacement surgery, necessitated by a recall on the hips she received the first time around. Getting that news last February was almost more than she could take. “I did cry when my hips were recalled,” Adams admits with a smile. “I read it and thought, ‘Are you serious?’ But now I’m ready to put this behind me too—again.”
“I knew what I had to do, and that was to be strong and survive.”

LOWERING THE RISKS This month is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Various organizations partner at this time of year to remind women of the importance of breast cancer prevention and mammograms. The American Cancer Society, one of the NBCAM partners, reports that after skin cancer, breast cancer is the most pervasive cancer among American women. Improvements in screening and early diagnosis, as well as better public education about prevention, have contributed to a slight decline in breast cancer rates over the last 20 years. The best chances of surviving breast cancer come with early detection through regular screening. Getting annual mammograms after the age of 40 is one of the recommendations made by the ACS. Clinical breast exams and self-breast exams every two to three years are recommended for women in their 20s and 30s. There are some lifestyle related risk factors for breast cancer. These are unlike the unchangeable risk factors that women can do nothing to alter, such as genetic predisposition, dense breast tissue, and having had previous chest radiation treatments. Women can take some steps to improve their chances of staying free from this disease by keeping
a moderate body weight, getting plenty of physical exercise, eating a healthy diet, and giving up tobacco use. Postmenopausal women considering hormone replacement therapy should discuss with their doctors the risks involved with that kind of treatment, as should women using oral contraceptives. Research has also shown a link between alcohol consumption and breast cancer. The ACA reports that women who consume one drink per day have a “very small” increase in risk, while those who consume two to five drinks a day are one-and-a-half times more likely to contract a form of breast cancer.
