A TRIBUTE TO TONY BAUER

First, some history. The brutal winters of the late sixties and early 70’s took a toll on the Minnesota deer herd, so much so that in 1971, the DNR closed deer hunting in Minnesota altogether. Many conservationists and deer hunters throughout the state were alarmed at the dramatic reduction of the deer herd and looked for ways to reverse this trend. A small group of concerned citizens in the Grand Rapids area organized and called themselves the ‘SAVE MINNESOTA DEER’ organization, which promptly started to seek attention and assistance of the legislature to save the starving deer herd. The success this organization had prompted the Save Minnesota deer organization to expand in 1980 into a state-wide organization, called the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association. In 1984, Mankato native Tony Bauer, (shown in picture) along with a small group of other dedicated conservationist, hunters and outdoor enthusiast joined MDHA and started a new Chapter called Bend Of The River Chapter, drawing members from Mankato and surrounding cities and counties. Tony was the first President of this fledging MDHA chapter, which grew from only a few members into what it is today, with a membership of over 250. All the original charter members from 1984 played a key role in the chapter’s growth and some are still very active today, but one man in particular, Tony Bauer, has been the back bone of this chapter. Tony has never missed a meeting or event sponsored by the chapter that anyone can remember. When he passed on his terms as President he assumed other leadership positions, chairing money-making events and community service duties. He has not restricted his time to just leadership positions either, as he spends hundreds of hours working events, such as Outdoor Youth Days, researching possible wildlife lands for purchase or selling raffle tickets, (picture at right). In recent years he has Chaired, or Co-chaired the Hides for Habitat program as well as the semi-annual highwaylitter pickup. The hides program collects hundreds of donated deer hides, that are then sold to a buyer. The money we earn from the hides has been instrumental in helping to acquire 8 wildlife management areas over the years, plus send over 200 youths to “forkhorn Camps” for free. Along with his chapter responsibilities, Tony also served MDHA as a Regional Director, requiring him to help and assist other chapters in the region and to bring their concerns and request to the attention of the MDHA governing Board. It has always been important to Tony that each member be heard so when concerns are voiced by individuals or chapters, their concerns are brought to the MDHA Board of Directors. The same is true for our legislative concerns, as Tony and others, have made many trips to the capitol to meet with law-makers and bring our concerns directly to our elected officials.

Along with all his other volunteer duties with our Chapter and MDHA, Tony also wrote a monthly chapter newsletter that he named the “Chapter Chatter”. He started doing this in 1989, and for the next 23 years, he faithfully, sent these newsletters out to all members to keep everyone updated on current news, conservation issues, hunting legislation and up-coming events. He also used the newsletter venue to keep the membership informed on club activities and achievements. The thing is, he never once tooted his own horn claiming any degree of ownership to these accomplishments, yet has always been quick to compliment others who worked alongside of him. Tony, who is an Army vet, was given the moniker ‘Y-Not’ during his service years, (Tony spelled backwards). To this day, many of his friends call him Y-not. I’m sure there is a story here that this writer is unaware of, but think his willingness to volunteer may have played a role. “Need a volunteer Sarge, well, Y-Not Me?” That would be Tony, always willing to step in and get the job done. So Y-not, your chapter friends concluded that your work and dedication have been so outstanding, for so long, with so little fanfare, that we felt it long overdue that we Toot Your Horn for a change. We all owe you a big THANK YOU for all you have done.
