Challenges facing farmers today and tomorrow Though farming was once big business in the United States, by 2012 less than 1 percent of Americans were professional farmers. Many challenges face today’s farmers, many of which are largely unknown to the general public. Many people have an outdated view of a farm as a small, family-owned and operated parcel of land where livestock is raised in open pens and crops are hand-harvested when ripe. The reality is that modern-day farms have had to overhaul operations to meet demand and remain competitively priced while adapting to the ever-changing ways technology infiltrates all parts of life. Each of these factors present obstacles for today’s farmers. Technology Rural farming communities are expected to make an effort to integrate modern technology into an industry that has been around for centuries. But such a transition in rural areas, where communications systems may not be as up-to-date as those in urban areas, is not always so easy. According to the Manitoba Rural Adaptation Council, a shift from a resource-based to an information-based economy, compounded by the rapid introduction and expansion of new technology in the workplace, has altered farm operation and the skills in demand. Older workers who have been schooled in one way of agriculture may have a significant impact on labor supply and the vitality of farming as a career. Younger adults who are knowledgeable in technology may no longer seek out agricultural careers. Decrease in farming as an occupation The United States Environmental Protection Agency says that only about 960,000 Americans claim farming as their principal occupation. As that figure has dwindled, the average age of farmers continues to rise, as the Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that roughly 40 percent of the farmers in this country are 55 years old or older. This has led to concerns about the long-term health of family farms throughout the United States. SEE US FOR ALL YOUR

Financial fall-out The ongoing recession of the last half-decade has also affected farmers. In November of 2012, the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics indicated that the unemployment rate within the agriculture, forestry, fishing, and hunting industries was at 13.6 percent, far higher than the national unemployment rate. As a result, many farm families have found themselves stuck between a rock and a hard place, as rising costs for equipment and technology are being coupled with decreasing profits and rising unemployment. Further complicating matters is competition from corporations and international food producers who have made it difficult for family farmers to turn a significant profit. Many family farmers rely on loans and lines of credit to survive, but thanks to changes in the financial sector that saw banks become less willing to extend lines of credit, some farmers are facing bankruptcy. Though it can be easy for those who do not work in the agricultural industry to overlook the struggles facing today’s agricultural professionals, a greater understanding of those struggles and the challenges that lay ahead can benefit the industry and its employees down the road. scrutiny for how farming impacts the environment. A growing emphasis on sustainability and conservation has led many people to protest certain farming practices. Protesters claim that certain practices, such as raising livestock, can pollute water, while the use of fertilizers and chemical pesticides is bad for the environment. Many farmers, however, have altered their methods to be more environmentally friendly and self-sustainable in the process. Climate change is another environmental issue farmers must deal with. Strong storms and severe droughts have made farming even more challenging.

Drought affecting corn crops prompts ethanol debate A drought that plagued most of the United States in the summer of 2012 decimated soybean and corn crops across America’s heartland. According to Reuters, during the drought ratings for corn and soybeans fell to their lowest since the major drought of 1988 and major farm states, such as Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois, Missouri, and Kansas, were not able to produce enough crop necessary to meet food and feed demands. To further exacerbate the shortage, the United States government still mandates that 42 percent of this year’s crop be turned into ethanol as part of the Renewable Fuel Standard adopted in 2005, angering some farmers. Livestock producers who rely on corn for feed are angry that the mandate has not been modified in lieu of the recordbreaking drought and shortages. Corn prices already are at all-time highs, and requiring that 42 percent of the yield be relegated to fuel will considerably drive up the cost of the remaining corn. Not only will livestock farmers be affected but so will those who enjoy corn in everything from breads to cereals. Consumers on limited budgets may find corn is simply too expensive. Ranchers and farmers are not the only ones hurting as a result of the corn shortage. The ethanol plants themselves are also feeling the crunch. A lack of corn means that many plants are remaining idle or not working at capacity. Some plants are not breaking even in terms of operational costs, potentially costing individuals their jobs. However, supporters of the ethanol requirement are concerned that removing the allotted ethanol amounts from fuel will further drive up the cost of filling up at the pump. Drivers have already experienced high gas prices, and many are feeling the effect on their wallets. The result is a catch-22 where no one wins. Despite the talks, some economists say that the ethanol mandate suspension may do little to lower the cost of corn. Agricultural economist Scott Irwin from the University of Illinois says that because of the backlog of demand of corn for fuel, it would be a few months before any price change would reach the market. Plus, the change would be nominal because it would be hard to implement such widespread changes in corn for fuel consumption since the country has come to depend on a set amount. High summertime temperatures combined with historically low rainfall totals this past season devastated many corn crops that would be put to use as animal feed and ethanol fuel. The debate over whether or not ethanol mandates should be temporarily ceased is bound to continue until corn supplies are replenished.

Safety is essential when visiting a farm
The nursery rhyme does not state, “Old MacDonald had a farm and on this farm there was a bunch of dangerous things.” But maybe it should? Farmers perform an essential service, providing food and other products that consumers commonly take for granted. The inner workings of a farm are something to treat with respect. Most of the families who live and work on a farm understand the potential hazards of such an environment. However, individuals visiting a farm may be unaware of these dangers. Understanding farm safety helps keep everyone safe. According to the organization Kids Health, the age groups at greatest risk for injury on farms are children ages 3 to 4 and teenagers ages 13 to 14. Most injuries can be prevented, though, with a little education and precautionary measures.

Machinery There are many different forms of machinery on a farm to help keep it working efficiently. These items can pose serious safety risks. Although tractors are the type of farm equipment that causes the most injuries, some adults still think it is safe to allow children to ride along. Wind as an Energy Option
Spring Farm News
18
As both businesses and private citizens continue to look for alternative sources of energy to help the environment, wind continues to generate a back and forth discussion as to its efficacy as an energy solution. While there are pros and cons to wind, it’s also important to note there are certain myths and misconceptions about wind that can cloud the discussion. Before discussing the advantages and disadvantages of wind, it’s helpful to examine certain elements of the argument that might be more rooted in myth than fact.
Myths About Wind

HOME MAGAZINE I MARCH 26 - APRIL 1, 2013
One of the more commonly cited issues surrounding the use of wind turbines to generate energy is their potentially harmful effects on avian life. In reality, wind turbines are much less harmful to birds than felines. According to HealthLink, a nonprofit organization dedicated to informing individuals about environmental risks to human health, studies have shown that wind turbines may be responsible for 1.5 to 2 deaths per year in most areas. Cats, on the other hand, are responsible for 8 to 10 80 Acres Waseca County bird deaths a year in most areas.

Benefits of Wind Turbines Arguably the greatest benefit of wind turbines is their environmental impact. Once the turbine has been constructed, its environmental impact is minimal. Wind turbines produce zero emissions, meaning there will be no CO2, sulfur, particulates, or nitrogen oxide entering the atmosphere from wind turbines. And because environmental conditions have been linked to a host of medical maladies, it’s safe to say wind turbines could help improve human health. Another benefit of wind turbines is the potential financial benefits to homeowners who agree to lease their land to wind developers. While the amount a homeowner can earn depends on the size of the wind turbine and how productive it is, projects in Minnesota and

and Iowa saw landowners earn between 2 and 4 percent of the turbine’s annual gross revenue. For a turbine that earns $200,000 per year in gross revenue, that’s an annual payment of $2,000 to landowners, a hefty windfall for homeowners, particularly in today’s economy. Reduced energy loss is another potential benefit of wind turbines. Energy is often lost via transfer through energy lines, with some estimates suggesting as much as 50 percent of all total energy is being lost to energy line transfers. Locally produced power, however, is much more efficient. Disadvantages Of Wind Turbines
The cost of wind turbines is commonly considered the greatest disadvantage. This isn’t a great concern for homeowners, as most wind turbines are owned by investors who then lease lands once the turbine has been built. However, the tenuous nature of the economy has led many investors to more closely examine where their money is going, and some investors might question if wind turbines are the best way to invest their money.
To learn more about wind power, visit the Environmental Protection Agency at www. epa.gov. TF113500
www.homemagonline.com
Safety also must be considered when considering the installation of a wind turbine. Large turbines could pose risks in areas with frequent air traffic. That’s a genuine concern in rural areas, where small personal aircrafts are often employed for farming purposes.
HOME MAGAZINE I MARCH 26 - APRIL 1, 2013
One of the more widely cited disadvantages to wind turbines is the noise they create. Large-scale wind turbines, at the peak of their production, can be very noisy. However, today’s turbines are much less noisy than those of yesteryear, often being compared to the noise generated from a modern refrigerator. In fact, the wind generated from today’s turbines often drowns out the noise generated from the turbine itself.

A career in agriculture can prove richly rewarding. While it’s common to envision overalls and tractors when imagining careers in agriculture, the opportunities to work in the agriculture industry stretch beyond the farm and into the corporate world. The following are a few of the paths men and women with a passion for agriculture can pursue.
Spring Farm News
Agricultural career opportunities abound
* Business: Agriculture is big business, and the industry has many opportunities for those who want to pursue a career in business. Farmers and producers of agricultural products need someone to draft contracts for their agreements with the large corporations who distribute those products. In addition, purchasing agents and agricultural financiers are just two of the many career opportunities that enable men and women to work on the business side of agriculture. * Social service: The agricultural industry also has positions of social service. In addition to food inspector, who ensures agricultural products are safe for human consumption, social service positions within the agricultural industry include environmental consultant and conservation officer. Men and women can also work to develop programs that encourage youngsters to pursue careers in the agricultural industry.

Agricultural instructors can train the next generation of agriculture professionals at the university or high school level, ensuring today’s farms are left in good hands tomorrow. TF121708

* Production: Of course, the agricultural industry has a host of careers for those who want to get their hands dirty. Farms need to be plowed, seeds must be planted and fertilized and farms need to be well-maintained to continue operating efficiently and effectively. Though technology has taken the place of many agricultural production positions, there are still many opportunities out there for those who want to work under the sun.

your hands or have lots of reliable contacts. When it comes to renovations, houses can conceal a lot of unpleasant surprises and poor planning can cause people to lose a lot of money. A successful flip has to be done quickly. As the saying goes, time is money! The longer your flip project sits stagnant on the market, the longer you’ll be carrying the mortgage and interest payments, taxes, insurance, heating costs, and electricity. That all adds up to a smaller profit once the deal is done. Lastly, if you’re thinking about turning flipping into a moonlight job, be sure to keep your credit rating high so you can obtain the best possible financing for each of your transactions.
For a successful flip, look around in good neighborhoods for a house that needs a bit of TLC and some minor renovations.

How can you tell when the time is ripe to plant seeds directly in your vegetable patch? When water no longer drips from your hand if you squeeze a fistful of earth together. But before getting down to work, be sure to check the soil temperature: ideally it should be around 10° C. You should also carefully read the information on the seed packet and follow the instructions about the depth and spacing of seeds.
CARROTS
Spring Home & Garden
The art of growing big, beautiful vegetables
You can start planting carrot seeds at the beginning of May if the weather is warm enough. Choose a day when it’s not windy or else the tiny seeds may blow away. Sow the seeds densely, because once they have grown big enough to touch one another you will have to thin them out. These miniature carrots don’t have to go to waste, though, as they are perfect in a salad.
RADISHES Radishes love the cold. You can start seeding them as soon as the soil is no longer muddy, perhaps by the end of April in cooler climates. Your harvest will be finished by June but a second harvest is possible if you re-seed at the end of the summer. This also applies to spinach and lettuce.
BEETS Beets tolerate cold, but gardeners living in more northern areas must wait until the end of May, sometimes even the beginning of June, before seeding. Leave at least 10 cm between the seeds in order to cultivate big specimens, and be especially careful not to forget to water them. Beets need moist soil for healthy growth.
CUCUMBERS
HOME MAGAZINE I MARCH 12 - 18, 2013
Contrary to the preceding vegetables, cucumbers hate the cold. Coolclimate gardeners will sometimes have to wait until June before seeding. Train the plants up a trellis so that the cucumbers don’t rot on the ground.

The ABCs of vegetable gardens A garden doesn’t have to be huge for you to feel the pleasure and pride of growing your own vegetables. In fact, if this is your first attempt, it’s best to start small. A smallish rectangle, measuring 2.5 metres by 1 metre will do the trick. It can even be smaller if necessary. Sun is themost important factor, so be sure to choose a spot that receives at least six hours of sunlight a day. Another essential element is water. Having ready access to water is necessary if you don’t want to wear yourself out carrying watering cans back and forth. Vegetables require frequent watering, especially at the beginning of the season and during dry spells. When preparing ground for a vegetable patch it is important to check the quality of the soil. If it is loose and well-drained you can simply remove any grass and dig 5 centimetres of compost and natural fertilizer into the existing soil. If your soil is heavy and contains clay, however, try the following fail-safe method: place eight to ten layers of newspaper over the entire surface of your patch in order to suffocate any grass or weeds. Next spread 30 to 35 cm of garden soil on top and mix in 5 cm of compost and fertilizer. Lastly, dig a 15 cm channel all around the garden to provide drainage.

YOU’VE GOT SUN, WATER AND EARTH, BUT NOW WHAT ABOUT THE VEGETABLES? First of all, it is important to know that seeding times vary from one region to another because of differing climates. You’re going to have to be patient if there is still snow on the ground. Make the most of this time to choose which vegetables you’d like to grow. A small tip: for your first ever vegetable patch, select easy vegetables: carrots, radishes, lettuce, and beets are good starters. Follow carefully the sowing instructions that are on the back of the seed packets. The soil must be kept moist while seeds are germinating. For seedlings such as tomatoes and peppers, which you may have purchased at a garden centre, do as the farmers do and wait for the last full moon in May before planting them and be wary of the risk of a late frost. To take care of your little vegetable patch, water when the soil becomes dry, install training frames or trellises (especially for tomatoes and peas), check for harmful insects, and remove any weeds regularly. A vegetable garden may take a bit of work, but what pleasure you’ll feel when you bite into your very first radish!

How to repair unsightly bald spots in your lawn Lawn care aficionados know how a single bald spot can make an otherwise luscious lawn look worn down and poorly maintained. A bald spot can stick out like a sore thumb, while several bald spots can compromise a home’s curb appeal. Treating bald spots typically depends on what is causing the bald spot. Bugs, dryness, pet waste and damage from mowers are some of the more common causes of bald spots. The following is a breakdown of these different causes and how best to address each situation so you can restore your lawn to its natural beauty.

Waste from pets can cause bald spots on a yard. This might surprise some homeowners, but pet waste contains a high level of concentrated nitrogen that, when applied to a lawn, can burn the grass and cause bald spots. Urine is most likely to cause bald spots, but fecal matter can as well.
STEVE STARRETT CONSTRUCTION, LLC
When addressing the problem of pet waste on your lawn, make sure no one else’s pets are the cause of the problem. Neighbors out walking their dogs should be discouraged from allowing their dogs to use your lawn as a restroom. If this does not work, then erect a fence or some type of structure that makes it difficult for other people’s pets to access your lawn.

can help their lawn avoid becoming the burned or yellowed turf that often results after extended periods of dryness. Fertilizing the lawn during the spring and summer is a good first step. This helps the lawn grow in healthy and thick. Once you have fertilized, don’t cut the grass too short. When grass is cut too short, the soil struggles to retain moisture, which can eventually lead to bald spots if weather conditions are dry. During especially dry periods in the summer, watering might be necessary. You won’t have to water frequently, but be sure to water deeply so the water can reach the roots of the grass.

significantly reduce the risk of lawn damage by diluting the nitrogen levels. Another way to address the issue is to encourage the animal to use various spots in the yard, rather than continually using the same spot. Flush each area with water immediately after the pet is finished. If the damage is already considerable, remove the damaged grass and reseed the spot. Mower Damage Sometimes Mother Nature and man’s best friend are not the culprit with regard to bald spots on your lawn. Human error can cause bald spots, too. Dull mower blades or grass that is cut too low can cause bald spots. Fortunately, this is easily remedied. To avoid bald spots, make sure mower blades are sharpened at the beginning of each mowing season, as dull blades damage the grass, which is then forced to use valuable nutrients to treat torn grass, weakening the lawn over time. When mowing, make sure you’re not cutting too low so the soil can retain as much moisture as possible. This will necessitate more frequent mowing, but this, too, can prevent bald spots, as it ensures those parts of the grass that contain chlorophyll will not be removed. Bald spots can turn a pristine lawn into an eyesore. But treating bald spots can be easy and, when done effectively, the lawn can be restored quickly. GT134017

Even the cutest pet can contribute to bald spots on your lawn.
Dirty windows are unsightly, and they can prevent beneficial sunlight from entering a home. Cleaning windows need not be done every week, but it shouldn’t be overlooked completely, either. While it certainly may be a chore to clean windows, there are ways to make the task much more tolerable. Curb appeal can be very important when selling a home. Even a home with a perfectly manicured lawn and the newest roofing and siding can seem unappealing if the windows are dirty. Keeping windows clean requires a good deal of work. For the acrophobics, cleaning second-story windows can test the nerves. Having the right tools on hand and a strategy in place will make the job easier to manage.
Spring Home & Garden
How to clean dirty windows
11
Cleaning windows Cleaning windows won’t necessarily be easy, but the following nine-step process can make the task less difficult and time-consuming.
* cleaning solution * cloth, newspaper or squeegee * towel
HOME MAGAZINE I MARCH 26 - APRIL 1, 2013
1. Choose a day when it is overcast so you will not be blinded by the sun while cleaning. This also helps prevent streaking. Begin by gathering what you’ll need to get the task done. Having everything at the ready will enable you to move from one window to the next. Here are the basic supplies you will need:
* spray bottle * extension pole to reach high windows * vacuum * ladder or step stool
2. Take down and clean drapery or blinds when cleaning the windows.

* garden hose

Remove the curtains so you will have an unobstructed surface with which to work. 3. Start with the interior side of the windows, as they are easier to access. Place a towel on the sill to catch any drops so the sill or the floor will stay dry. 4. Spray a lint-free cloth or the window directly with the cleaning solution. The edges and corners of the window tend to accumulate the most grime, so begin by cleaning those areas first. Once they are clean and you will not exchange dirt to the center of the window, work on the middle. Wipe the windows in a horizontal direction to help alleviate dripping.

HOME MAGAZINE I MARCH 26 - APRIL 1, 2013
5. To create a streak-free surface, some people prefer to use a squeegee to drag out any pockets of moisture for more
6. Vacuum the window sill and frame afterward to catch any dust and debris. 7. Repeat the process for all interior windows.

even drying. Be sure to wipe the rubber strip of the squeegee after each pass on the window. You may choose to buff out any other streaks with newspaper.
8. Move outdoors and start off by spraying the window with a garden hose to loosen any of the accumulated grime. Use your cleaning solution to dissolve the rest of the dirt. You may want to let it sit on the window if there is stubborn grime. Repeat the cleaning process used indoors for each window. 9. If exterior second-floor windows are hard to reach, consider using a ladder and extension pole to extend your reach. Upper windows will not be scrutinized as closely as lower windows, so you may have a greater margin for error. If the windows are simply too high up, rely on a professional window cleaner to get the job done rather than risk falls or other injuries.
